How to install a wooden window in a house with your own hands: step by step instructions, video. Installation of wooden windows, video

Of course, plastic windows have long won our hearts. However, for budget way window replacement is suitable for a wooden frame. And if you decide to carry out such repair work in your country house or on the veranda, then you can make wooden windows with your own hands. When I added a veranda to my house, I immediately decided to glaze it and the option with plastic windows did not suit me. Of course, production machines assemble window frames much better and faster, but you always want to do something with your own hands. But if you follow all the rules for processing wooden material and the technology for connecting parts, then it is quite possible to achieve good results. Today we will look at step-by-step instructions for making wooden windows.

Making a wooden box

wooden box

When I decided to make a wooden window with my own hands, I thought about what kind of wood to use. From myself I want to advise you to use pine - it is quite affordable due to its cost. If you, like me, decided to try to make a wooden frame for windows yourself, then give preference to this particular material. Oak can be considered a good alternative, but it is more expensive than pine and I was afraid to use it for the first time.

Important! If you decide to experiment, then you should not immediately purchase expensive materials. It is possible that you will not succeed and the wood elements will be damaged.

stock up necessary tools in advance, although many home craftsmen have all these items in constant use:

  • Drill and screwdriver - a mechanized way of tightening self-tapping screws will speed up the assembly process
  • glass cutter
  • electric planer
  • Chisel and hammer

Before buying, always check the condition of the boards. They should not have cracks or chips, protruding knots or any deformations. They must also be completely dry. Step technology:

  1. For my window, I chose a board measuring 150x50 mm
  2. In all wooden blanks he made a groove resembling the letter "G". The depth of the groove was 15 mm
  3. After that, I connected 4 parts together. For joints, wood glue is used, and the corners should be 90 degrees each. After the box is glued, drill holes in it for a wooden rod, which is 3 cm long. This is an additional fixation and provides 90 degree corners
  4. The box is inserted into the already prepared opening for the window. Everything is simple here: you drill holes into which you insert dowels, and then fix the box with self-tapping screws. I did not perform such actions - my goal was to make a window with my own hands

Important! All cracks must be filled mounting foam. With this fixing, the mobility of the tree with a temperature difference is not taken into account.

Step-by-step instructions for making a frame for windows with your own hands depends on what kind of window you want to make. I made a single-glass profile with 2 grooves:

  • The window frame is made from a wooden bar, the size of which depends on the design of the windows. I used wooden beam 6x4 cm, but you can take larger sizes
  • If window profile will be double-glazed, then the design will have 1 groove more - 2 grooves for glasses and 1 for fixing in a box
  • The profile is made using a milling cutter or an electric planer - I chose 4 mm glass, and 10 mm bead
  • In order to assemble the parts, they need to be cut. To get 90 degrees, cut the edges obliquely, that is, 45 degrees. Self-tapping screws should be used for high-quality fixing and immobility

As a beginner in this business, it was not immediately clear to me how the whole process takes place. Instructions for the manufacture of wooden windows were written for me as if in an incomprehensible language, but having bought everything necessary materials and tools, I started work. Having considered all the drawings and photos that can be found on the Internet without any problems, it turned out that making a wooden window with your own hands is not such a difficult task.

Important! More recently, cashing was used to hide flaws in the installation of wooden windows or their thermal insulation. Now cashing plays not only a practical, but also a decorative role. Cash is suitable for wooden houses and is only used for them. It can be carved or resemble images of animals - it all depends on the imagination of the master.

Only a little remains - we insert glass

We make wooden windows with our own hands

The most important thing in this process is the exact choice of glass dimensions. Thanks to this, cold bridges are not created, and the glasses adhere qualitatively to the wooden window frame. Deviations of 1 mm may already have Negative consequences- but we don't need it.

Important! Remember safety precautions when cutting glass. You should definitely have gloves to protect your hands and goggles - protection from glass chips is a must.

You need to cut glass with a diamond glass cutter, and fine-grained sandpaper is suitable for polishing the edge. The cutting technique is very simple. It is enough to stock up on a ruler that will be longer than glass and lead along it with a glass cutter. Before you smear the edges with sealant, you need to attach a glass for fitting. If everything is successful, then sealant is applied to the grooves, after which the glass is finally inserted into the frame. After that, we use a glazing bead - it should hook both the frame and the glass, and then fix it with thin nails. If the fillers are wider, then fix them with self-tapping screws - choose thin fasteners.

On this, the manufacture of wooden windows with their own hands is completely completed and only one thing remains: the placement of wooden windows in prepared boxes. I did not need this action, but if you still decide to install, then:

  1. We insert the structure into the block and fix it in the grooves
  2. Using self-tapping screws, we fix the frame - the elements must pass through it directly into the wall
  3. All cracks are blown out using mounting foam and waiting for it to dry completely
  4. In the future, you can make slopes with your own hands in the most convenient way for you. But for wooden structures, everyone is used to using plaster, since plastic slopes will not look harmonious

Renovation of an old wooden structure

We restore old windows with our own hands

I would like to raise another important question: how to update old wooden windows with your own hands? Despite all the defects that appear on wooden structures after long years they remain very strong and durable. Therefore, there is not always a desire to change old window structures and spend a lot of money on it.

Usually, do-it-yourself restoration of wooden windows involves installing seals and painting frames, but in some cases a more time-consuming process is required. When gaps appear between wooden frame and the box, seals should be used. You can use rubber, foam rubber or polyvinyl chloride. But if a skew has formed, then closing or opening the sash on the windows becomes a real problem. In order to correct the situation, you can try 2 methods: first, check the loops - maybe they have settled and it’s enough just to find a new place for them or to cut off the excess with a planer. The fact is that wood tends to swell and therefore there may be places that need to be adjusted over time.

Very often, windows do not close due to a corny thick layer of applied paint. To do this, you need to use sandpaper remove excess layers of coatings from wooden structures. However, the most terrible problem may seem to be rot in certain areas. Oddly enough, there is a common solution to this: using a chisel, you need to cut out the damaged area, it would be better if you grab some more usable material. Lubricate the resulting recess with epoxy or wood glue, then insert new material and secure it. When the adhesive solution dries, the entire surface is processed with a grinder. The final decision will be to open the frame with varnish or paint with paintwork materials.

Results

As you can see, there is nothing wrong with making new wooden structures or updating old wooden windows. In order to do all the work yourself, it is enough to study the technology, as well as stock up on the necessary tools and wooden materials. Having chosen the right wood, you will be able to build a window structure yourself and subsequently glaze your summer house or veranda, and possibly a summer kitchen.

Do-it-yourself window installation will save up to 50% of the money that would be spent on installation by a third-party company. But it is very important to do everything right, otherwise the savings will be doubtful. For wooden houses, there are some features that you should be aware of.

Possible problems with incorrect installation of windows

It is advisable to adequately assess your strengths in advance, because some mistakes can become very expensive:

    • lack of casing - a house made of timber during shrinkage “walks” and begins to put pressure on window frames;
    • the use of mounting foam in the shrinkage gap between the top in the casing and the wall of the house - the hardened foam is very hard and will transfer pressure from the upper bars to the window frame, nullifying the functions of the casing;

    • incorrect calculation of the dimensions of the plastic window frame - not taking into account the mounting gap, you will have to expand the window opening;

    • too large a gap between the frame and the wall - with a simple foaming of such a gap, the slopes will always be cold, it is better to insert an additional expansion profile;
    • lack of external protection of the mounting gap - when foaming the distance between the frame and the casing, it is better to close the gap from the outside with PSUL tape, which provides foam protection from ultraviolet radiation, but allows moisture to evaporate;

    • lack of waterproofing from the outside and vapor barrier from the inside - the foam is destroyed when exposed to the atmosphere, which leads to a deterioration in the insulating properties;

    • placing the window in the "cold zone" - is the cause of the freezing of the slopes and the formation of condensate from the inside

If there is the slightest possibility of making one of these mistakes due to inexperience, it is better not to save and order the installation of windows. For an experienced builder, do-it-yourself installation should not be a problem.

Pitfalls that plastic window manufacturers do not talk about

The tightness and high sound insulation of plastic double-glazed windows is presented as an undoubted advantage. But, unfortunately, not everything is so rosy. After all, the humidity in residential premises is constantly increasing, and thanks to leaky wooden frames, a constant inflow of water is ensured. fresh air. Of course, too large gaps can make the house very cold, so euro-windows have long become a very popular product.

How to solve the problem with high humidity? One option is to do forced ventilation. But in the absence of ventilation holes, this can be problematic - you will have to redo a lot.

It was for such cases that window frames were invented. supply valves- special profiles that are installed on plastic windows. What is especially pleasing is the ease of installation. It is enough to replace part of the standard seal with a special one and fasten the valve to the window sash with several self-tapping screws. Unfortunately, the system will not work without an exhaust vent.
Another unpleasant surprise for owners of wooden houses is that companies that install plastic windows often do not guarantee their work, citing the unpredictability of wood behavior. So even with all the installation rules, you can find that after a few years the windows stopped opening. And you won't be able to sharpen the plastic with a file.

Manufacture of casing (pigtails)

The first thing that begins with the installation of windows - with the installation of casing. But is it always needed and how to do it right?

When you can do without pigtails

A new wooden house made of logs or timber will shrink in any case. And no one canceled the seasonal heaving of the soil. In this case, casing is required - it will protect the window from distortions, torsion or bends.

It is important to use only dry and durable material for casing boards - edged board 50 mm thick and edged timber 150x100 mm or 50x50 mm. The width should be equal to the thickness of the wall.

But in frame house you don’t have to make a pigtail - the frame itself is already formed for window and door openings and provides the necessary rigidity. In a log house that has stood for more than 10 years, some builders also do not mount the casing, arguing that it has already undergone shrinkage and is not deformed. But for peace of mind in your home, it is better to do it, this process is not so complicated.

How to do a squash correctly

The last option is the most time-consuming, but also the most reliable. If there are doubts about your own carpentry skills, it is better to make a casing in a mortgage bar. For this:

    • IN window opening, in the middle of the beam, two vertical furrows 5x5 cm in size are selected. This can be done both with a chainsaw and manually circular saw, chisel and axe. The second option is preferable if the hand is not stuffed for precise work with a chainsaw.

    • On top of the mortgage bar is laid edged board and fixed with self-tapping screws flush - two at the top and bottom. To do this, a small recess with a diameter slightly larger than the screw head is pre-drilled.
    • If the “thorn-monolith” casing option is chosen, then the previously sawn T-shaped element is simply driven into the groove and also screwed on with self-tapping screws.
    • Vertical elements should not reach the upper edge of the opening by 8 cm - so that the top laid on them with a thickness of 5 cm is at a distance of at least 3 cm from the wall beam. This will be the shrink gap.
    • The tip should enter the grooves with little effort, and not move freely in a horizontal plane. It is also fixed with self-tapping screws screwed in at an angle.
    • The insulation is laid in the shrinkage gap and closed on the inside with a vapor barrier, and on the outside with a windproof membrane. In no case should the insulation be covered on both sides with vapor-tight films - the accumulated condensate will cause mold to form on the wood adjacent to the insulation.

And this is how the casing is done “in the deck”:

When the pigtail is ready, you can proceed directly to the installation of double-glazed windows.

Do-it-yourself installation of plastic windows

The installation of double-glazed windows is not very complicated, but it requires precise adherence to the technology. Otherwise, the window will almost certainly condense, and the frame will warp.

Checking the delivered double-glazed window

In no case should you neglect this moment! First, the dimensions of the window opening and the double-glazed window are checked. So, if the opening is 184 cm, then the window frame should be 180 cm - the gap between the side posts and the wall cannot exceed 2 cm on each side. The height of the window opening, for example, is 120 cm, then the frame itself should be 116 cm, and at the bottom there is also a support profile (clover) of 3 cm. Thus, the gap on top will turn out to be 1 cm. it needs to be left a place at the window calculation. It is needed so that the window sill can be installed from the inside, and the ebb can be screwed on the outside.

If mosquito nets are planned on the windows, it is also necessary to check the presence of fasteners. Handles are often “lost” as windows are transported without them. But pins - special fasteners, you need to select yourself.

Their length should be such that, when fully screwed in, they reach only to the middle of the casing. And that's with clearance. If the dowel is screwed into the wall wooden house, the window will begin to deform regardless of the presence of a pigtail.

Often they do not pay attention to small elements - decorative overlays, fittings and drainage holes. They also need to be counted. But the window sill and the ebb must be ordered - forgetting to clarify their need, you can find that the windows arrived without them. For installation, you will also need special linings for the glass itself - their presence can only be seen by disassembling the double-glazed window.

They may not be included in the kit, so it is better to order them in advance. Wedges are convenient because, thanks to their different sizes, you can set the frame evenly by simply placing a wedge desired thickness under corners and racks.

Dismantling and preparation of double-glazed windows

The finished double-glazed window is brought assembled. But to install it, you have to disassemble everything to the frame. For this:

    • when closed, the upper pins holding the swinging sash are removed with a special key;
    • the window handle is inserted, the sash opens and is removed from the lower mounts;
    • glazing beads are knocked out from the inside of the window and double-glazed windows are removed - you can use a hammer and a regular knife;
    • you need to remember or designate the right and left glazing beads;
    • from outer side removed protective film- under the influence of the sun, after a few months it will no longer come off;
    • external elements are mounted - mosquito net holders and decorative plugs for drainage holes;
    • holes for pins are drilled - first at a distance of no more than 20 cm from the corners of the frame, and then no more than 60-70 cm from each other;

Once the preliminary preparation is completed, you can proceed directly to the installation.

Installation of the frame and assembly of plastic windows

First, the frame is simply inserted into the window opening and temporarily fixed in it. For example, temporary jibs nailed on the outside. But it is much easier to do everything with an assistant - he just holds the frame until it is leveled and screwed to the casing. Frame installation also requires the correct sequence:

    1. The bottom edge is leveled - laser level more convenient in this regard. Wedges of different thicknesses are placed under each rack so as to achieve a perfectly even position. Even minimal distortion will create problems during operation.
    2. Side braces are inserted to ensure the same distance from the walls. If the width of the window frame is too small and literally "falls out" of the opening, you can use a special expansion profile. This is much better than foaming the resulting huge gap.

    1. The frame is also aligned vertically. Do not forget that you need to install it in a "warm" zone - for wooden walls without external insulation, this is clearly in the middle.
    2. Once the frame is level, you can begin to mount it, starting with the side racks. First, holes are drilled in the tree through those already made in the frame, and then the dowels are baited. First, the upper and lower, with a mandatory check of the vertical, and then between them.
    3. As soon as the frame is fixed, the ebb is attached outside. Of course, this can be done as a last resort, but on the second floor it is not so easy to approach from the outside. The tide is inserted into a special groove under the frame, screwed on with two self-tapping screws along the edges, and under it the gap is filled with mounting foam.

    1. Decorative trims are put on the fasteners of the sash. The lower ones are put on the frame, the upper ones - on the sash. First, the sash is installed on the frame, and only then the handle is attached in the open state.

    1. Double-glazed windows are placed on special gaskets. Without them, the window may simply burst due to the emphasis on the metal parts in the corners of the frame.

    1. The mounting seam around the perimeter is foamed.
    2. The window sill is installed. To do this, a finished window sill is placed on the window sill, wedges are placed under it for leveling. The window sill is removed, its end and delivery profile are smeared with sealant, and the free space between the wedges is foamed. Again, the window sill is placed, pressed tightly against the profile and left until the foam hardens.

  1. In some cases, they do the opposite - first install the window sill, align it in level and screw it with dowels to the casing. And then a double-glazed window is placed on top of it. In this case, it is no longer necessary to align the frame horizontally. The only inconvenience is that the window sill material must withstand the action external environment. Of course, you can fix the ebb outside on top of the window sill and foam everything under it, thus protecting the wooden element.

Once the mounting foam has hardened, you can start finishing the windows.

Slopes for a plastic window in a wooden house

The easiest option that even girls can handle is to close them plastic panels. For this you will need:

  • L-shaped or start profile- it is screwed to the wall close to the window frame;
  • decorative plastic corner- it closes the end of the panel from the side of the room and is also screwed with self-tapping screws;
  • the plastic lining itself for the slopes.

And you don't even need to froth anything. But in order to provide the necessary protection of the installation seam and good insulation, it is necessary to lay insulation between the wall and the slope and cover it with a vapor barrier. From the outside, the seam is closed with a windproof film - waterproofing with good vapor permeability.

And in order for the windows to please with warmth and comfort, it is very important to protect the mounting foam from exposure to ultraviolet radiation, as well as from being taken away by birds. You do not need to restrain your soul's impulses if you want to start doing something with my own hands. And everything will definitely work out!

All modern wooden windows on the market building structures, suggest the possibility of self installation. The quality of workmanship, the availability of all kinds of fittings and components make this process simple and fast. In addition, there are many articles and instructions from manufacturers regarding installation. By following the directions, almost anyone can handle this process. However, we must not forget that only competent performance of work will make it possible to take advantage of all the advantages of wooden windows during their operation.

For the installation of wooden windows you need:

  1. Training window opening(including measurements).
  2. Installation of the structure in the opening.
  3. Attaching the box to the wall.
  4. Insulation device around the perimeter of the box.
  5. Debugging of opening/closing mechanisms.
  6. Finishing.

Through-hole method

Wooden structures are installed, as a rule, by the through-mounting method using dowels. It is especially suitable if you want to install wooden windows for a summer residence. The main advantage of this method is that the box is unable to “move” in the opening and change its position under the influence of external mechanical loads (distortions, bends and displacements are excluded, which cannot be achieved when fastening wooden box anchors). This is due to the fact that the dowel with a hollow sleeve is a natural stopper, and the screw does not have the ability to go deep into the wall.

The advantage of this method is that such an installation requires no special tools and nozzles, the screw head is closed with decorative plastic caps (this contributes to excellent appearance windows, as the plugs hide all the flaws - chips, cracks, etc.). The features include the choice of the place in which it is necessary to drill the dowel hole. The four-stage section of the window frame profile allows this to be done only at one level (relative to the inner surface). In other places, drilling and mounting the dowel is not allowed.

Opening preparation

In order to be able to adjust the windows during installation, the opening must be larger than the dimensions of the box (10-20 millimeters on the sides and top, 50-60 millimeters below). This adjustment is necessary to minimize various factory defects - incorrect frame geometry, misalignment due to dimensional misalignment, etc. Therefore, before installing a wooden window, it is necessary to check the entire structure for the detection of such defects in advance.

Sometimes builders make the mistake of using openings as a formwork structure to make wall lintels. That is, the window is then “walled up” in the opening - this is unacceptable, as it causes the box to be “tightened”, and the absence of gaps in this version provokes a lack of insulation and the impossibility of the window to function in normal mode.

As dictated by the rules for installing wooden windows, the allowable difference between the diagonals of the frame cannot exceed 10 millimeters (this tolerance is approximate, as it depends on the size). They check the correctness of the angle with a goniometer, laser tape measure, or simply measure the size of the diagonals with a centimeter, a rope.

Dew point isotherm

Despite the fact that the technology for installing wooden windows is quite simple, there are several main points that are important to pay attention to. One of such moments during installation is the exact determination of the depth at which it is necessary to “plant” the structure in the opening.

The dew point isotherm must pass inside the window - 10°C. “The dew point is the temperature at which air, having a certain initial temperature and relative humidity, is no longer able to absorb moisture.”

Only if this rule is followed will condensation not form on the inside of the window. If the wall is covered heat-insulating layer (mineral wool or foam), then the dew point isotherm has a limitation in the form thermal insulation material, and installation must be carried out at its level.

Mounting blocks

Installation of wooden windows using a mounting block is probably the most technologically advanced and most convenient way to install. A block (height 50 millimeters) impregnated with an antiseptic is attached to the waterproofing so that it is located horizontally and parallel to the outer edge of the wall.

It is necessary to free up, first of all, the space - the sashes are removed from the window and only the box is installed. After it is planted on the mounting block, the horizon and vertical of all sides are aligned with a level or laser tape measure and the box is fixed with wedges in working order (all distances from the box to the edges of the opening must be strictly the same).

Options for placing mounting blocks are shown in the figure:

Mounting with plates

Manufacturers complete wooden windows with mounting plates (some "craftsmen" make them on their own). Installation in accordance with GOST contributes to a reliable and durable fastening of frames. On both sides, plates are attached to the window frame, in the middle in the plane of thickness, they maintain a distance of 250 millimeters from the corners (this stage of fastening is carried out before the frame is installed in the opening).

If window dimensions exceed 1.5 meters, it is necessary to fix an additional pair of plates (in the middle of each side). Fasten the plates with galvanized mounting plates wooden products- 4 × 40 millimeters. Having finished the pre-installation of the box with wedges, the mounting plates are attached to the wall with dowels, after which the wedges with which the window was held are removed and the horizontal and vertical are checked again.

A correctly and qualitatively made wooden window has an optimal level of resistance to heat transfer, and is isolated (in the factory) from the penetration of cold air from the outside and moisture. In order to fully prevent this, it is necessary to arrange insulation around the entire perimeter of the opening, thus preventing the penetration of moisture and air from the outside through possible gaps between the opening and the frame.

As a rule, when installing wooden windows, ready-made mounting foam is used - this is effective, simple and fast. Polyurethane-based mounting foam tends to expand after application, which guarantees its penetration into all cracks and spaces. The main thing to remember is that the foam layer must be uniform and not interrupted, in order to avoid excess foam, a restrictive spacer is installed from a regular board.

From the outside, after the installation of wooden windows, it is necessary to perform waterproofing. Modern silicone putties have good waterproofing properties, are durable and easy to use. Everything metal elements, according to the instructions, it is necessary to lubricate, check and adjust the sashes. Each wooden window is completed with a manufacturer's manual with recommendations for installation, adjustment and care during operation. This installation manual provides details of this and other necessary data. If you follow all these simple rules, then wooden structures will serve "faithfully" for a long time.

Installing wooden windows is a simple process, but time-consuming, requiring precise calculations and accuracy. Here is a short guide for doing the installation work on your own.

IMPORTANT! Making windows to order is the work of professionals. Before performing any type of work related to the order or installation of a wooden window, expert advice is required!

The first technology involves the removal of sashes and double-glazed windows from the frame for the entire installation period. So you can fix the window in any opening, besides, this way you are guaranteed to transfer loads to the internal metal fittings of the window.

The second method will not leave marks on the end surface of the wood.

Figure 6 - Two methods of installing wooden window units

Installation of wooden window blocks

Working process:

Free the window from double-glazed windows and hinged shutters.

Carefully align the empty frame using spacer blocks along the vertical plumb line, as well as the horizontal level.

Drill holes in the frame itself and the wall around the entire perimeter of the window.

Fix the frame with collet bolts.

Put double-glazed windows and sashes in place.

The joint between the window and the wall is sealed with polyurethane foam.

When performing installation work, consider the following rules:

  • All removable glazing beads must be marked.
  • The window should stand with an emphasis on the lower bearing blocks, which are not removed after installation. Blocks should be located near vertical elements: under vertical partitions in the frame or at the corners of the frame.
  • The window should not "hang" on the dowels!
  • When setting the window vertically, you only need to use a plumb line with a sharp tip and absolute axial symmetry.
  • Do not overtighten the fixing screws. Strong tightening can lead to profile deflection.

IMPORTANT! According to GOST, the mounting gap between the wall and the frame should not exceed 15-20 mm, depending on the dimensions of the window, and all installation work should be produced at a temperature not lower than 15 degrees Celsius.

The seams must be filled with mounting foam. It is preferable to choose a professional pistol foam (for example, GoldGun foam from the PENOSIL series or Soudal foam). Working with regular foam (supply through plastic tube) can be inconvenient ( the best way in this category - Ceresit STD TS 61).

During installation, it is also recommended to use mixtures with a neutral pH, it is forbidden to use mixtures based on quicklime - due to the strong alkaline environment, the mixture can corrode not only the layer of varnish or paint on the surface of the window frame, but also damage the wood itself.

Installation of wooden window sills

Installation of wooden window sills is carried out according to the following rules:

  • The length of the window sill should not exceed 3 m (longer structures should be assembled from several canvases).
  • The length of the window sill is calculated by the formula: the parameters of the installation clearance -4 mm in length for gaps. This value is calculated on both sides of the window for each meter of length.
  • Heating appliances must be at least 8 cm away from the window sill.

Necessary materials:

  1. silicone sealant;
  2. two-component foam;
  3. 1 mounting bracket for every 500 mm length;
  4. combined mortar with metal terminals.

Work progress:

Clean the landing base.

We try on the canvas, adjust it according to the calculated dimensions.

We plant the canvas on a cement screed without fixing on the adhesive composition.

We set the beacons according to the level (remember the obligatory slope of 3 degrees!).

We install the window sill on the lighthouses.

When installing the window sill, a waterproofing substrate is used.

The window sill board must be brought under the base of the window, however, the edges of the window sill should not adjoin the window structure closely.

If installing a wooden window sill with your own hands is more acceptable for you than calling a master, remember the golden rule: "Measure seven times and cut once."

The window installation process is completed by the installation of slopes and fittings.

When buying or ordering a wooden window, make sure that its fittings have a quality certificate, and the fittings manufacturer guarantees at least 10 years of service without breakage (for example, ROTO and MACO fittings have such a guarantee). The cost of good fittings, of course, is higher than ordinary Chinese, however, the guarantee of faithful service window system lies in quality fittings and good installation. So the high price of components fully justifies itself.

Some time ago the appearance plastic windows on the construction market made a real splash. Still, because they overshadowed the wooden ones in almost all respects. People no longer had to paint their window frames every year to keep them looking their best and insulate them for the winter season. Double and triple glazing became a reliable barrier to street noise and drafts, and caring for plastic frames was not difficult.

Wooden windows are making a comeback

But still, not everything is so rosy. Some manufacturers, in order to reduce their own costs and the cost of their products, use low-quality plastic, which emits, although not a large number of toxic substances, but still exerting Negative influence on people, animals and even plants.

That is why the installation of wooden windows is gradually regaining its lost popularity. People, surrounded by many artificially created things that are not always safe for health, are giving more and more preference natural materials. Modern technologies allow you to make wooden windows that practically do not differ in other characteristics from plastic ones. IN wooden frames now double-glazed windows are installed in the same way, reliably protecting the room from cold and noise, modern compositions perfectly protect wood from rotting or getting wet, leading to swelling and deformation of the frame, and painting materials are durable and resistant to climatic changes.

Is it worth it to install wooden windows yourself?

Do not forget that in many ways the excellent quality of a window (and this applies not only to wooden ones, but also to any others) depends on how accurately the technology for installing wooden windows is observed. Even a small deviation from the rules can cause a quick failure or nullify the expected efficiency.

In principle, installing wooden windows with your own hands does not differ in any complexity, therefore, if you need to put ready-made frames in the opening, then with minimal building skills, you can do this work yourself. But it should be borne in mind that in this case, no one, except yourself, guarantees good quality work, and if suddenly something goes wrong, then you will have to correct the flaws only at your own expense.

What is the best way to start...

Of course, it is necessary to start installing wooden windows from the manufacturer with the preparation of the window opening. It should be an even rectangle, without distortions, large potholes, cracks and other defects. If the old window is still installed in the room, we dismantle it and thoroughly clean all surfaces of the opening from construction debris, dirt and dust.

How to get rid of the distortions of the window opening?

The next step should be taken seriously - after all, these are measurements of the window opening. All measurements are taken both inside and outside, and in three places: along the edges and in the middle of opposite sides. If the opening is significantly skewed and it is not possible to straighten it, then it is necessary to increase the dimensions of the window so that they exceed the value of the maximum level of the outer opening by at least 10-20 mm in height and 25-40 mm in width. This can be done by installing additional profiles on the window. Such a measure will avoid the appearance of gaps between the frame and the opening in places of strong skew. There is another way to get rid of this frequent defect - this is an increase in the dimensions of the window frame, but it is better to entrust it to professionals who can do it correctly and accurately.

Ideally, the dimensions of the new window should be 25-30 mm smaller than the internal dimensions of the window opening. Such a reserve is necessary to accommodate insulating materials. In addition, the presence of a window sill should also be taken into account, so it is better to leave 50-60 mm in the lower part of the opening.

Correctly put the window in place

You can insert the finished structure into the opening in three ways, and the cost of installing wooden windows in any case will be approximately the same:

  1. With mounting blocks.
  2. on mounting plates.
  3. "through" way.

The frame should be installed on bars, the height of which is equal to the height of the window sill.

Wooden windows are best installed closer to outside. This will keep most of the opening warm.

We fix the window in a perfectly flat opening

First the way is fine not for every window. The fact is that for fastening with pads, an absolutely even opening is needed, and this is not always possible to achieve. If the opening meets the requirements, then first it is covered with a waterproofing layer, and mounting blocks are already attached to this layer parallel to the window frame. After inserting the box, the vertical and horizontal are aligned to the level using wedges.

We fix the window with mounting plates

In the second case, special mounting plates are attached to the sides and top of the frame, while they should be located at a distance of 250 mm from the edge. First, the plate is installed so that it “looks” into the room, and then, having bent it, it is attached to the inside of the window opening using self-tapping screws, but without tightening them.

If the dimensions of the window exceed one and a half meters, then one or two additional plates will need to be installed.

After installation in this way, the window, in the same way as in the previous case, is adjusted with wedges, leveled and finally fixed with self-tapping screws.

The most reliable way to fix a window frame

In this case, you will have to face the need to remove glass or double-glazed windows. This is done very simply: first, the glazing beads are carefully separated, and then the glass is already removed. On the sides and top internal surfaces frames are marked and holes drilled. Now the frame can be installed in place, but you can drill holes in the walls only after it is completely leveled.

We screw in the screws, but so that they can be easily moved from their place, since you first need to adjust the position of the frame both horizontally and vertically. This is done in the same way as in the previous two cases, that is, with the help of wedges.

A good window should not have gaps.

To prevent the penetration of cold air and moisture into the room, it is necessary to eliminate all the gaps between the window frame and the opening. The most common way to get rid of cracks is foaming with mounting foam. With a lack of experience, it is practically impossible to do this qualitatively. Too much foam can deform the frame and cause the entire window to skew. Of course, you can use wooden spacers to prevent deformation, but it is better not to risk it and purchase any other insulating material.

The window sill and ebbs can also be installed independently

When installing a window sill, it must be brought under the frame a little, but at the same time it should protrude 45-50 mm relative to the wall. After that, it must be leveled and fitted as tightly as possible to the frame. Now we remove the window sill, and we foam the entire space under the frame with mounting foam. After installing the window sill in place, the space under it is filled with foam.

In order not to move the window sill from its place when foaming, it is recommended to put a small load on it, for example, several containers of water.

Drains are even easier to install. First, they are cut to size with a margin of 60 mm (30 mm on each side). Further, the ebb is first screwed with self-tapping screws to the bottom of the frame, and then fixed pointwise on the inside with mounting foam.

Basic installation rules

So, let's repeat the basic rules for installing wooden windows, the observance of which will allow you to independently install a wooden window with high quality and reliability:

  1. High quality surface preparation.
  2. The angles must be equal to 90°, and the difference in the length of the diagonals must not exceed 10 mm.
  3. Gaps are obligatory: from below - 50-60 mm, on the sides - 15-20 mm.
  4. It is better to install the frame in the second quarter of the window, counting from the outside.

And in conclusion, so that the whole process is clear, we bring to your attention short video- installation of wooden windows, in which all the main stages are competently considered.
