Do-it-yourself upholstery of an iron door with dermantine. How to upholster a door with dermantine with your own hands? Upholstery on the outside of a wooden door

Entrance and interior doors lose their attractiveness over time, but it is not always reasonable to purchase a new canvas, in most cases a new leatherette upholstery can save the situation. At the same time, such an event improves the heat / sound insulation properties of the door, which is especially important for residents of multi-storey buildings.

Leatherette (also called leatherette, eco-leather or granitol) as a material was known and popular to our forefathers in the 30-40s of the 20th century. Leatherette was used to upholster not only doors, but also furniture, as well as book bindings and much more. However, at that time the quality of the material was at a mediocre level, and the variety of colors and textures left much to be desired.

Now, thanks to modern developments, leatherette has become a strong, attractive in appearance and durable material with a wide palette of shades and textures. Leatherette is one of the many leather substitutes. During the production process, nitrocellulose, polyurethane or vinyl coatings are applied to the base-fabric on one / two sides, which ensure the external resemblance of the finished material to natural counterparts.

Reasons for the popularity of leatherette

  1. Leatherette endures temperature changes.
  2. The material "breathes", but at the same time it has water-repellent properties.
  3. Leatherette is quite durable, has sufficient tensile strength, the surface is difficult to damage.
  4. Leatherette is easy to care for. With a frequency of several months, the surface should only be covered with impregnation. Pollution is eliminated with soap suds, ammonia or ordinary medical alcohol.
  5. Eco-leather is attractive in appearance and has a very affordable price. Anyone who knows how to hold a hammer in their hands can buy a piece of material and beat the door with their own hands.
  6. Leatherette as upholstery is a good sound and heat insulator, respectively, if you upholster the door with eco-leather, then the room will become much more comfortable.

When choosing a material for door upholstery, pay close attention to the thickness of the base fabric and the quality of the coating. It is advisable to choose a dense material that slightly springs when stretched. High-quality leatherette does not have stains from paint, and if you run a fingernail over the surface, then there are no traces left. Don't forget about the smell. The harsh chemical amber does not fade over time and will be constantly felt in the room.

If the quality of the material suits you, all that remains is to make a purchase by paying for a piece of leatherette, the length and width of which is approximately 10-15% larger than the dimensions of the door.

What will be useful for work?

Leatherette will have to be cut, which means you will need scissors, pencil and meter ruler or tape measure.

To fix a piece of material, it will come in handy construction stapler, hammer, construction and furniture decorative nails(metal or covered in matching color vinyl leather). Nails are not needed for sheathing an iron door. They will be replaced by mounting glue.

Additionally, for decoration, you can prepare decorative wire or cord. If the door is very old, it is recommended to purchase metal corners to further strengthen the structure.

If additional insulation is planned, then it is worth buying foam rubber, felt or batting.

And to prepare the door for sheathing, you need pliers, screwdriver, pliers.

The purpose of the preparation is to get a smooth door leaf, on which leatherette will lie beautifully and evenly. Therefore, it is necessary to remove the peephole, dismantle the door handle, lock, remove the old trim, if any.

It is important to eliminate all protruding and protruding parts. If the door is embossed, then a sheet of thin plywood, cut in accordance with the dimensions of the door and nailed with construction nails along the perimeter, will help to quickly align it.

This option is suitable for interior doors. Work will be much more convenient if the door is removed from its hinges and laid horizontally on a pair of stools of the same height.

Step one. We prepare materials

In addition to the list of materials and tools listed above, you will need frame profiles for fabric tension (one-sided). It is these profiles that we cut so that you can easily place them around the perimeter of the door.

And you will also need furniture buttons, consisting of two parts - a metal base with a thread and a hat covered with leatherette.

Step two. Making markup

In order to evenly and beautifully sheathe the door with leatherette, we make markings, namely:

  • using a square and a tape measure, we divide the door with two perpendicular lines into four equal parts;
  • We mark on the door the places where the buttons will be installed.

Step three. We fasten buttons, insulation and trim

On those places where the buttons will be located, we apply assembly glue. We glue the details of the buttons with threads.

We take the already cut profiles and glue them around the perimeter of the door. We wait until the glue dries (about a day).

In the meantime, the glue dries, in a sheet of insulation (polyurethane foam or foam rubber) we cut holes for buttons. The next day, we spread the insulation on the surface of the door, combine the holes in the material with the button fasteners glued to the door. Trim off the excess around the edges. We do the same with dermatin. It remains only to fasten the buttons, pull on the leatherette and tuck it into the profiles.

Step four. Final

We install the handle and hang the door in place. This completes the work.

Upholstering the door with dermantine with your own hands is easy! Classic variant

The work is quite painstaking, but everyone can do it. It is not necessary to remove the door from the hinges.

We cut out the material. We will need strips of leatherette about 15 cm wide for bordering rollers and a layer of material a little larger than a door.

We take leatherette strips, carnations and a hammer. We place the strip with the wrong side up. With carnations (step - 10 cm) or a stapler, we fasten the edge of the strip to the edge of the door.

Using a stapler or glue, we fix foam rubber on the surface of the door. Cut off the excess with a utility knife. On top of the foam rubber, we attach two layers of batting in the same way. This will extend the life of the short-lived foam rubber and improve the thermal insulation qualities of the door.

Let's start attaching leatherette fabric. We hammer the first decorative carnation at the top of the door, in the middle. The second is from the bottom in the center of the door. This will avoid distortion. For the same purpose, it is worth pulling the material as tightly as possible. Next, we hammer nails around the perimeter of the door, observing a step of about 10 cm.

We return to the edging of the door. We cut the batting into thin strips, turn each into a tube. We put these tubes in the center of the leatherette strips. We wrap the strips inward so that we get a neat roller. We fix the rollers with decorative carnations.

We fix the handle to the updated door. On this work, you can complete or proceed to the decorative finish. To do this, we take a cord, lay out any pattern you like on the door, for example, a zigzag or rhombuses.

Note! If your door opens "from itself", then you will have to mount the rollers not on the door, but on the jambs (box) adjacent to it. On the door itself, the leatherette is simply stretched, the edges are tucked up and fixed around the perimeter with carnations.

Door upholstery with leatherette tile method

The door itself will act as the basis, buttons and foam rubber are also needed. The door must be removed from its hinges.

We make the markup using a square and a meter ruler. We draw the entire door leaf into identical rhombuses, in the corners of which we fasten the base screws for the buttons. We lay out the foam rubber with cut out holes and fix it with a stapler (we insert 3-4 staples around each screw, and also fixing the foam rubber around the chipboard perimeter).

Foam with holes

Cut leatherette into diamonds. Leatherette diamonds should be slightly larger than those marked on the door. Excess material will go to the hem. For leatherette rhombuses, we cut off one corner in advance, so that it is more convenient to make sheathing.

We fasten the first rhombuses along the edges of the door with a stapler, bending. The corners of the rhombuses should be in those places where the fastening for buttons protrudes.

How to fix diamonds in the center of the panel? We lay out the rhombus on the foam rubber according to the markup. The cut corner should be at the top. We fix the lower corner of the rhombus with a bracket. We bend the edges of the material. We fix the right and left corners of the rhombus with brackets, avoiding distortions and wrinkling of leatherette. We fasten the button. We continue until the entire door is hidden behind a neat trim.

Even in ancient times, people came up with a device blocking their homes. Initially, the front door was needed to protect from the cold, rain and wild animals. But over time, the function of the door has expanded a bit, and today a good front door not only performs the function of protection, but also combines with the interior of an apartment or house.

Tidying up the front door with your own hands using dermantin is not such a difficult task, especially since it is a very affordable material.

Peculiarities

Any, even a very old door, can be transformed by upholstered with dermantine. This material has its own characteristics and advantages.

The word "dermantin" has a foreign origin. The literal translation means “material imitating the skin”, since the root of this word is “derma”, which means “skin” in Latin. The letter "n" crept into it by accident, so that the pronunciation was harmonious. But this phonetic distortion does not change its properties at all, and most people know this material in just such a sound.

The basis of dermatin is nitrocellulose coated cotton fabric applied to one or both sides of the material. Leatherette has many features due to which it is most often chosen as an upholstery material.

First of all, it has a fairly long service life. Presentable appearance and properties of this upholstery material remain unchanged for 10 years.

Leatherette is a very moisture resistant material. Due to its composition, it does not absorb moisture at all, therefore, heaters and other waterproofing materials used together with leatherette as upholstery do not change their properties.

Leatherette is not subject to decay processes. Its composition prevents the reproduction of various microorganisms. Also, it does not fade in the sun, as it is resistant to ultraviolet rays. This quality allows upholstery of doors that are not only indoors, but also installed in open areas without fear of changing the appearance.

This material is also resistant to temperature extremes. At sub-zero temperatures, neither its properties nor its appearance change. To clean the surface of this material, no specialized products are required, ordinary soap and water are sufficient. But it is worth noting that it is quite stable when exposed to many cleansers. Do not forget that upholstery of doors with dermantine solves the problems of heat and sound insulation of the room.

Pattern options

On the surface of the door, upholstered with leatherette, various drawings are often made. To do this, use special decorative nails and cords made of the same material as the upholstery itself. To make any drawing, you must first put marks on the surface in the right places, and only then nail the carnations. Due to point punching, contours will appear on the surface of the upholstered door, which form the pattern. In addition to decorative nails, cords are often used, they are clamped with nails and stretched between them, resulting in a textured pattern.

Most often, drawings can be made in the form of rhombuses, which can have different sizes and locations. Diamonds of the same size can be concentrated in the center or distributed over the entire surface of the door. Sometimes the pattern combines rhombuses of different sizes.

On a door upholstered with leatherette, you can apply a pattern not only in the form of rhombuses, but also in the form of other geometric shapes: circles, rectangles, squares.

You can decorate the door without using cords. To do this, carnations are stuffed onto the surface of the canvas in the intended order. There can be a small number or a lot of them, they can be located both around the perimeter of the door and in the center of the structure.

The decoration of the iron door is carried out before the upholstery of the door. Leatherette and insulation are connected with special buttons in the right places. To date, you can purchase a ready-made set of special devices for decorating a door in a store. With it, you can create an unusual and beautiful pattern on the door leaf, however, the cost of such a set is somewhat higher than ordinary nails and a cord from the remnants of the material.

How to sew with your own hands?

In order to properly upholster the door with your own hands, you first need to purchase the necessary material and tools. There are two types of doors - these are either metal or wooden structures. Depending on their type, the right amount of material is selected. In order not to make a mistake with the footage, you need to first measure the length and width of the door leaf and, based on the obtained values, acquire material. Wooden structures are upholstered with a piece of leatherette, not exceeding the area of the door leaf by more than 15 cm on each side. And for metal doors, a margin of 10 cm is enough.

For the upholstery of a wooden door, in addition to covering the main surface, as a rule, additional elements such as rollers are used. They are nailed along the perimeter of the door leaf and serve not only as an additional element of decor, but also cover the gaps between the leaf and the frame. As a rule, these strips are prepared in advance from leatherette and insulating material. The width of leatherette strips varies between 10-15 cm, and the length depends on the size of the door. Strips of insulating material should be slightly smaller in width (8-10 cm).

When choosing a heater, it is necessary to take into account not only the price, but also the service life of the material. The most common material is foam rubber. It is affordable, and its service life varies between 13-15 years. You can also choose batting, which has a slightly higher cost than foam rubber. Its service life does not exceed 30 years, and in addition, it has a significant weight, so it can significantly weight the design of the door leaf.

The most modern insulation is isolon tape. The service life of this material is in the range of 60-75 years. Very often, isolon tape is used together with foam rubber. Thanks to this combination, the front door protects the room even better from the penetration of noise and cold, and when decorating it, a beautiful relief surface is formed.

In addition to materials, you need to prepare and tools. Scissors are needed to cut the material. A sharp knife will be needed to remove excess insulating materials. Screwdrivers and pliers will be needed in the process of dismantling locks and other work.

Nails will be required to attach the material to the wooden structure. Using a stapler, the door is sheathed with insulating material. Glue is required to bond the metal surface with insulation and leatherette. With the help of decorative nails, a pattern will be applied to the surface.

Walkthrough

If you have the necessary materials and tools, you can proceed to the process itself. Regardless of the type of door, some additional measures need to be taken. As a rule, for convenience, the door leaf is removed from the hinges, but if you are an experienced craftsman, then the reconstruction of the door can be carried out without removing it. Then the lock and peephole are dismantled. Next, the door is cleaned of the old coating (if it was present there). Now you can start the reconstruction of the canvas.

Algorithm for lining the inside:

  • First you need to attach prepared strips for rollers to the door leaf. To do this, they are applied face down and fixed on all sides of the canvas with a stapler. If there is an overhead lock in the door, then you need to nail it from its location.
  • If the design provides for a mortise option, then you need to start from the upper corner (from the hinge side). The protrusion of the strips should be no more than 4 cm.

  • Prepared strips of foam rubber are fixed on the surface of the canvas. Now you need to tuck the edges of the leatherette and strengthen it on the surface. The roller should not protrude beyond the edge of the door by more than 3 cm.
  • Then you need to cut out foam rubber or other insulating material. It should lie well between the rollers, indent on each side 1 cm.
  • Now, using a stapler, we attach the insulating material to the front door.

  • We nail the prepared piece of leatherette. To do this, you need to tuck its edges by about 5-6 cm and attach it to the surface of the door. The folded edges should slightly overlap the roller. A decorative nail must be nailed, stepping back from the edge no more than 7 mm. Similarly, we nail the second nail in the other upper corner, after stretching the canvas.
  • Next, we nail the nails in the upper part of the canvas in increments of 10-12 cm, gradually descending along one side. We do the same with the second side and the bottom of the door leaf.
  • After fixing the last nail around the perimeter, you can start decorating the surface.
  • The final step is the installation of locks and handles.

Stages of finishing the outside:

  • First, we tightly cover the door and, depending on the location of the door frame, draw a projection on the door surface. This must be done so that when sheathing the surface, do not go beyond the drawn line.
  • Now you can attach the roller to the bottom of the door leaf. It should fit snugly against the threshold when the door is closed.
  • Then you should make rollers for the left, right and upper parts, but you need to fix them on the door frame. From the side where the hinges are located, it is installed flush with the jamb, and in the opposite and upper part it needs to be extended by a few mm (depending on the slots).
  • Now you can install and fix the main canvases.

Method of upholstery of a metal door:

  • First you need to apply glue to the door leaf.
  • Then it is necessary to attach a piece of insulating material to the prepared surface and press it. We cut off the excess material with a knife, not forgetting to cut holes for the lock, handle and eyelet.
  • Now we apply glue to the foam rubber and glue the leatherette, not forgetting to tuck the edges of the material.

Covering the front door yourself is not such a difficult task, the main thing is to take into account all the nuances associated with the design of the canvas.

What to paint?

Over time, a door sheathed with leatherette may lose its attractive appearance. If the resulting abrasions are local in nature and there are not so many of them, then it does not make sense to change the leatherette, it can be restored using special paints.

Coloring leatherette is a quite inexpensive and affordable way, with which you can put in order the door upholstered with it. The main thing is to choose the right option.

You can paint over damaged areas with acrylic paints. They adhere well to a wide variety of surfaces, including leatherette. You can use special paints for the skin. These paints, due to their composition, stay on the surface for quite a long time, do not fade and do not peel off over time.

In order to more accurately select the color closest to the source material, it is better to purchase a set of paints. Mixing colors will allow you to choose the closest shade.

To properly paint a leatherette door, you must first prepare the surface. To begin with, clean it of dirt and dust, and then treat the place of painting with alcohol. Now we are preparing the desired shade. You can mix shades on a special palette, or you can take a sheet of foil and apply paint on it. To facilitate the work with paints, you need to add a little acetone.

Now you can start coloring. The paint is applied either with a brush or with a foam rubber sponge. After 15-20 minutes after applying the paint, when the first layer is completely dry, you can apply the second one.

How to upholster a door

Despite the fact that stores delight consumers with the widest range of entrance and interior doors, the front design of which is carried out using the most modern technologies, not every owner of an apartment or house is in a hurry to make such a purchase. The high price of many models is not so bad.

The problem is that replacing the box requires at least repairing the slopes, and / or wallpaper on the wall - and this is a completely different expense. In addition, the old door can still be quite strong, and therefore it is a pity to change it. In such a situation, upholstery with leatherette doors is one of the best ways to update, which can be done by hand.

Before talking about how to sheathe doors with dermantin, let's bring some clarity to one question. Since dermantin has been used as an upholstery material in our country for almost 90 years. We used to call soft door upholstery that way, without going into too much detail.

However, there are also fundamentally different materials, which in everyday life are still habitually called dermantine.

In fairness, let's clarify what is the difference between them:

Upholstery type Brief information about the material

Leatherette (nitro-leather), how to upholster

This material is a kind of artificial leather. It is based on cotton fabric or knitwear with a nitrocellulose coating, which is why it received its second name: nitroleather. The coating may be applied on one or both sides.

This is the cheapest finishing material, the price of which starts from 200 rubles per meter. Thus, the entire door upholstery with leatherette, together with fasteners and insulation, will amount to no more than 1,500 rubles.

Since nitro-leather does not have high aesthetic qualities, and wears out rather quickly, more resistant polymers such as PVC and polyacetate began to be used as a coating for the knitted base.

Viniliskin practically does not have the shortcomings of its predecessor, and outwardly often imitates natural leather. So, the leatherette for door upholstery that you looked at in the store is most often not nitro-leather.

Be guided by the price tag: even if “dermantin” is written on it, keep in mind that when the price per meter is 600-800 rubles. and more, then it is vinyl leather.

This option is not artificial leather. It is closer to genuine leather, as it is a composite of leather and latex. This material is made from scraps of leather, crushed into a powder bound by a polymer. In terms of strength, elasticity and appearance, it is very similar to natural leather.

A beautiful texture or embossing can be made on the surface of the composite leather. Shoes are even made from this material. And leatherette upholstery of interior doors, as well as wall panels or upholstered furniture, using recycled leather, which will look simply gorgeous.

This photo shows a variety of artificial leather on a non-woven basis.

Eco-leather has the highest characteristics regarding strength, wear resistance, thermal conductivity, and even frost resistance.

So it can be safely used for upholstery of a street door.

Tools and Consumables

In addition to the decorative material that will go to the upholstery, you will also need a foam pad 10-15 mm thick. It will help to solve two problems at once: to insulate the door and create a beautiful relief on the upholstery.

  • You can, of course, use other leatherette door heaters: batting, felt, synthetic winterizer, but it is foam rubber that allows you to make the upholstery really soft.
  • When sheathing is done on both sides- especially if this is the entrance to an apartment or house, rollers are usually made around the perimeter, which decorate the ends of the canvas, and at the same time prevent cold air from penetrating through the cracks. For this, foam rubber is also used, only round - in the form of a bundle with a diameter of 2-3 cm.
  • From fasteners you will need furniture nails with a wide hat. Imi along the perimeter of the canvas, rollers and upholstery, and decorative nails are attached. They can have a figured metal or plastic cap.

Note! The best way to cover the door with dermantine looks when nails with caps are used. They can be selected in color, or in contrast. And even more convenient is to purchase a ready-made upholstery kit, in which everything that was mentioned above is there. It costs at least 850 rubles. on one side, but it depends on the quality and design of the attached material.

Of the tools, for work you will need a tape measure with a pencil, a hammer, pliers, a chisel, a knife. In the case when fastening along the perimeter is not done with nails, but with staples, a stapler is also needed.

In principle, do-it-yourself door upholstery with dermantine is a simple matter. Not only men, but also housewives can cope with it, since this does not even require removing the canvas from the hinges. Although, it is, of course, more convenient to work on the removed canvas. Next, we will introduce you to the process, and offer a video in this article as a visual aid.

Important Points

The maximum width of the door leaf is 100 cm, and upholstery materials are at least 140 cm. So, the necessary margin is obtained in width on both sides, and there are still strips from which rollers can be formed. Strips 13-15 cm wide are enough for rollers.

So:

  • According to the height of the door, leatherette is also cut with a margin of 10-15 cm on each side. The amount of overlap depends mainly on the thickness of the insulation, but do not forget that it is better to cut off the excess than not enough.
  • As for the insulation, it is cut exactly to the size of the canvas, and nailed to it with small carnations or planted on glue.
  • Given the fact that the door is decorated with an old one, before starting work, it is necessary to eliminate all malfunctions that prevent it from closing normally; if necessary, strengthen the box; sand and paint the hinges.

On request: “upholstery of the door with leatherette video”, you can find many videos that show not only the process of sheathing, but also talk about how to make repairs and other preparatory work. For example, it is very important to beautifully decorate the end of the door, which does not close with a sheathing, and will spoil the whole picture.

And in general: if you do not stint on the purchase of material with an interesting texture and original fasteners, as well as do everything right, your door will look no worse than in the examples presented above as a sample.

As already mentioned, door trim with dermantin can be performed without removing them from the hinges. But if you want to create a beautiful geometric pattern, it is still better if the canvas is conveniently located in a horizontal position.

Drawings can be used as traditional ones, most of which are presented below, or you can come up with something of your own. Just do not improvise in the course of work - it is unlikely that something good will come of it. It is better to think over well and draw a diagram, and already produce skin according to it.

Before trying on the leatherette, all accessories must be dismantled from the canvas: handles, lock. If there is a closer on the door at the top, you can not touch its body, but carefully bypass it by making a corresponding recess in the sheathing material.

Do-it-yourself sheathing, instructions

Sheathing with roller

To form the rollers, either a flat insulation rolled into a tube or a round foam rubber bundle is used. To wrap it, you need strips of upholstery material. As a rule, these are trimmings of the dermantine canvas - it is with them that the work begins.

The strips are applied to the canvas with the front side, and fixed to one side with simple nails or staples like this. Next, cut off the foam rubber band of the desired length, and wrap it in a strip, attaching its second end to the canvas.

Depending on the volume of round foam rubber and the elasticity of the upholstery, rollers with a diameter of 5-6 cm are obtained. However, the procedure for their formation may be different.

If you do this before the main door trim is made with leatherette, the roller fasteners will be hidden under it. What happens as a result, we see in the picture above.

The following example shows a variant in which the bead is formed after the fabric has been sheathed. Then the width of the strip should be such that you can make a hem. In this case, the front fastening is done with decorative nails.

Note that the roller can only be made from the outside of the door - and even then, provided that it opens onto the street or landing. Otherwise, the roller will interfere. On the inner doors, there is no need for it at all, because it is not made for beauty, but to eliminate drafts.

Main cladding

Without a roller, everything is much simpler, and it looks neater. First, the insulation is attached. On the removed door, glue can also be used to fix the foam rubber. When the door leaf is in a vertical position, it is much more convenient to use a stapler for this purpose.

So:

  • Fastenings are made in such a way that the foam rubber is freely bent along the edges - the size of the indentation is 5-6 cm. It is needed so that the ends of the sheathing material can be filled under the insulation before you begin to fasten it with decorative nails.
  • In general, there are different ways to fix the soft lining on the door leaf. If it is not removed from the hinges, then it is better to first fill the dermantin under the foam rubber, and fix the middle with a decorative nail.
  • After that, the sheathing material is well stretched, and is fixed first in the corners and in the area of \u200b\u200bthe castle, and then around the entire perimeter. At the same time, in addition to nails, you can also use moldings matched to them in appearance, imitating a solid mount. This simplifies the work, and gives the skin some originality.

  • This is the simplest version of the skin, which absolutely anyone can do. Complex patterns are performed on the removed canvas, and the procedure largely depends on the pattern. And, by the way, it may not exist at all.
  • When the outer door is upholstered, many craftsmen begin to fasten leatherette from the hinge side. The material is first laid face down and baited along the edge with a stapler, then the insulation is laid, the upholstery is wrapped in the desired position.
  • When one long side is ready, the material is well stretched, and, bending along the edges, the end ones are attached. With this upholstery scheme, the cushion is also formed, but only from the side of the lock. Therefore, a strip of fabric is nailed here in advance, and then, when the main upholstery is already completed, a roller is formed. Its purpose is to hide the edge of the skin, and decorate it beautifully.

When ready-made kits are used, which have decorative nails covered with vinyl leather, which involve making a beautiful pattern, the order of work is somewhat different.

Note! Such nails are not quite common - they are not hammered. They are detachable and consist of two elements: a flat base with a threaded pin, and a decorative cap screwed onto it. Such a fastener design allows you to veneer with leatherette not only a wooden, but also a metal door.

  • To complete the drawing, appropriate markings are applied to the door leaf. For this purpose, it is better to make a pattern from the same leatherette. Holes will be made on it, corresponding in diameter to the size of the nail head. The contours of these holes are also applied to the door.
  • In those places where there should be decorative fasteners, an element with a pin is planted on glue, which is also often present in the kit. Also, in some kits, a special profile is provided, which is glued around the perimeter. In the grooves of which the canvas should be refueled. They cost more, but the upholstery is much more accurate.
  • When the nail pins and profiles are glued, the insulation is spread and cut to size, and upholstery is laid on top of it. The cladding, together with the foam rubber, is placed on the pins of the nails, and then the hats are screwed onto them. Start from the center, and in accordance with the pattern move to the edges.

Lastly, the edges of the upholstery are tucked into the profile. Do this with a round spatula, which is usually used for mounting fabric ceilings. Excess material is cut off after it is tucked into a baguette around the entire perimeter - and the skin is ready.

Finally, we note that when do-it-yourself upholstery of doors with dermantine is done, the video watched before starting work will allow you to better navigate and master the technology.

The final part of the installation

The last step is the installation of accessories. In the new upholstery, it is necessary to make cuts of the hole slightly smaller than the size of the holes in the canvas, this is very simple, since they are well felt through the leatherette and the substrate. Reinstall the handle and lock, peephole, hinges. Then you can proceed with the installation of the canvas in the opening, put it on the hinges and you can enjoy the work done.

Design options

In order to make the final result look a little more interesting, you can not only sheathe the front door from the inside, but add a few curly elements to its surface. To do this, you can use the remaining furniture nails. Carefully mark the places for their installation on the surface of the dermantine, after you hammer in the nails, you can tuck a decorative lace under them. Leatherette and soft lining will change: the contours will be pressed through and a peculiar pattern will appear on the surface of the door. Usually rhombuses are made in this way, but other schemes can be used.

Schemes of decorative upholstery of the door

The easiest way to work with a wooden door, but with a sufficiently thick and dense layer of the substrate, you can make such a decor on an iron door. To do this, you need to fasten the nails or buttons with a strong thread on the reverse side before sheathing the fabric, connecting the foam rubber and dermantin.

Do-it-yourself door sheathing with dermantine is quite simple and interesting, besides, it allows you not only to save on buying a new door, but also gives you a unique opportunity to create your own author's version of the finish. When done correctly, it will look no worse than the industrial version.

Leatherette- a substitute for leather, is one of the most sought-after materials. The material is most widely used in construction and decoration.

The high demand for leatherette is justified by the following characteristics:

  • Frost resistance. The material performs its functions well even at sub-zero temperatures. It also helps keep the heat in the house, so it can be used on front doors;
  • Durability. The material retains properties from 7 to 10 years;
  • Water resistance. The material has moisture-resistant properties, which eliminates damage to the product or insulation;
  • Soundproofing. The material can be used for the front door, since noise will not penetrate the room through the canvas;
  • Ease of maintenance. To keep the look of leatherette, wiping with a damp cloth is enough. You can use a special cream that will give the leatherette a shine;
  • Antiseptic properties. Resistant to bacterial decay, mold and other pests;
  • Resistance to aggressive chemical environment. The material can be washed with any household chemical;
  • Low cost. Sheathe leatherette affordable for the average family;
  • Wide range of textures and colors.

In the process of upholstery of the product, you must adhere to a certain technology. It will allow you to maximize the useful properties of the material, and ensure a long service life. The procedure includes the following steps:

  1. surface preparation;
  2. upholstery with insulation;
  3. leatherette upholstery;
  4. decor accessories.

Each stage has its own nuances, so you need to carefully familiarize yourself with the features of the implementation of the listed points.

Training

If the skin is being replaced, it is necessary to stock up on a knife, pliers and, if necessary, a screwdriver. The procedure is as follows:

  1. Removing from the loops.
  2. Dismantling of accessories.
  3. With the help of pliers, all decorative nails are removed.
  4. Leatherette and insulation are removed. Getting rid of the insulation can take some time if it was attached to a metal door with glue.
  5. The surface is being prepared for cladding.

If the door was not upholstered before, then all the fittings are simply removed. It is necessary to remove all elements that stick out on the surface. A flat surface should go under the leatherette, so you can level the relief with a plywood plate. You can fasten it with ordinary nails. It is important not to forget to treat the wood with special means.

insulation

First you need to decide on the material of the insulation. The most suitable for dermatin are:

  • Foam rubber. Low price, wide range of density and thickness. It has a service life equal to dermatin. Possesses average insulating properties;
  • Batting. Inexpensive material, with a service life of up to 30 years. However, it will shrink over time and may absorb moisture. It is toxic when burned;
  • Izolon (a subspecies of polyethylene foam). The most modern version. It has good insulating properties. The most expensive of all materials, but the final cost will not be too high.

On a wooden surface, the insulation is fixed with a stapler. On the outside, up to 8 cm must be retreated from the edges. Insulation is applied to the entire area, without indentation. Marking is applied for working with a stapler or driving nails. The step between staples or nails should be 10–15 cm. Processing is carried out around the entire perimeter.

For a metal surface, glue is needed, which is also applied around the perimeter, stepping back up to 8 cm from the edges. We must not forget to cut the insulation on the handle, lock and eye.

Preparation of tools, accessories

To rationally use time, before upholstery, you need to acquire a set of necessary tools. The set includes:

  • a hammer;
  • stationery knife and, if necessary, scissors;
  • stapler (if not, a hammer is used);
  • roulette;
  • marker;
  • brushes (for metal surfaces).

The list of tools and materials for wooden and metal doors is slightly different. Therefore, the plating technology for each material has its own. It is also important to acquire all the materials at once:

  • leatherette;
  • insulation;
  • staples for a stapler or nails (wooden surface);
  • glue (metal);
  • decorative nails;
  • braid (in case you need to additionally fix leatherette, and decorate the door).

Reference! Choosing decorative nails by design is not difficult, as the market is overflowing with products of various shapes, sizes and colors.

upholstery technology

Working together will go much faster. The second person will help stretch the fabric for comfort and evenness of the relief. The edges of the canvas are always bent inward, which will make the upholstery field durable and aesthetic. Gates should be a few centimeters. The wooden door is upholstered with carnations with a decorative cap. Step from 10 to 15 cm.

Important! It is necessary to ensure that the insulating rollers do not look out of the gates.

Leatherette should not cover the door to the very edges. A few millimeters need to retreat, which will ensure free movement.

Figured design is often used with decorative nails. Soft insulation allows you to create a relief on the surface, which will completely transform the door. Be sure to mark the places for installing accessories with a marker. Next, carnations are hammered into the intended places, which usually have a removable decorative cap so as not to damage it during installation.

There are a large number of patterns that can be created on the surface: from simple dots to geometric shapes such as rhombuses, squares. On the Internet, you can find many schemes for decorating with furniture nails. Between the nails, you can stretch a decorative thread that will change the pattern and relief.

For a metal door, you need to come up with a drawing at the preparation stage in order to fix the bases of the screw buttons on the glue. In the insulation and leatherette, small holes are made in advance for screw buttons.

Upholstery of a wooden door: video

Upholstery has its own nuances. Wood needs care and protection. Therefore, often wooden doors have an unpresentable appearance. A good restoration option is leatherette upholstery. The tree must be treated with an antiseptic. When working with a wooden canvas, the lining must be fixed with a stapler. Since glue is required for the iron surface, it is much easier to staple the wooden canvas. Furniture studs are used on the edges.

In order to be able to decorate the doors correctly, you must follow the instructions given in the video.

How to sheathe a metal door with leatherette?

A metal door is usually placed at the entrance, so it is extremely it is important to use a quality insulation. Often only the inner side is insulated, however, a range of decorative accessories allows you to decorate the outer side using insulation.

A metal door does not require insulating rollers from the outside. The size of the insulation should be 1–2 cm smaller at the edges of the surface area. Leatherette you need to take a piece 5–6 cm larger at the edges than the door area. This is necessary for the bend. The upholstery process consists of the following steps:

  1. Glue is applied around the perimeter, stepping back up to 2 cm, and in thin strips over the area.
  2. A heater is applied, and pressed for a while. The drying time of the glue is indicated on the package.
  3. Starting from the top, glue is applied to the back of the product at a distance of 5 cm from the edge. Press leatherette for the glue to set.
  4. Similarly, the procedure is carried out on the lateral edges. It is important to stretch the canvas to a uniform relief. Sometimes you have to cut off extra pieces that will prevent you from closing the door.

Lining on the inside

The inside of the front door can be insulated with polystyrene foam. Thus, it will also be possible to simplify the procedure for upholstery with leatherette. The warming process is as follows:

  1. A frame under the foam plastic is fixed along the area of \u200b\u200bthe door. For this, strips having the thickness of expanded polystyrene plates are used. The rails are fixed with the help of metal screws, which are fixed in pre-drilled holes.
  2. All large seams and joints are sealed with mounting foam.
  3. Styrofoam plates are installed in the frame, which are fixed with a special glue. The gaps between the plates and slats are also sealed with mounting foam.
  4. A sheet of plywood, even with the area of the door, is nailed to the rails.
  5. Further, the procedure is similar to the upholstery of wooden products. It is only important to ensure that decorative nails are nailed to the location of the rails.

From the inside, the insulating rollers are attached to the door frame. They should be placed flush with leatherette from the side of the loops. On the reverse side and on top, the protrusion should be up to 5 mm. From below, the roller is located at a height of 1.5–2 cm from the floor.

When choosing a material for upholstery, it is important to remember the disadvantages of leatherette:

  • Low fire safety. A highly flammable material that emits acrid smoke when burned;
  • Not the strongest material, which is easily scratched and cut;
  • In case of mechanical damage, it will not be possible to return the previous appearance.

There are also important points to consider when choosing leatherette:

  • The material must be elastic. The hardness of leatherette indicates a fake;
  • Choose a coarser canvas;
  • A pungent odor indicates a low quality canvas.

When upholstering with leatherette, it is important to maintain the sequence of the process, and take into account the characteristics of the materials used. If the technology is not violated, then such upholstery will last up to 10 years.

The front door not only protects the house from burglary, but also keeps it cozy and warm. Upholstery of the front door will help increase its functionality, and in some cases even avoid replacement (if there are only cosmetic defects).

The modern construction market offers a lot of variations of upholstery materials of different prices: leatherette, vinyl leather, genuine leather, special fabric. The choice depends not only on the budget, but also on the type of door leaf, its quality, and the preferences of the owner.

Benefits of front door upholstery

  1. Increasing the level of sound insulation, moisture resistance.
  2. Improves an esthetic look, does imperceptible defects.
  3. Keeps the heat in the room.
  4. Protects steel sheet from corrosion, and wood from the effects of temperature changes.

But it is also important to take into account that the upholstery is sensitive to sudden changes in temperature and is practically unsuitable for restoration after mechanical damage.

How to upholster a wooden door

Upholstery will extend the life of the wood, prevent it from drying out. In the process of work, materials such as:

  • dermantin;
  • vinyl leather (, beautiful appearance);
  • felt;
  • plastic-foam;
  • bologna fabric

When choosing a material, take into account in which direction. The way of working with sealing rollers and fixing the upholstery boards depends on this:

  • opens outward (the rollers are fixed to the ends of the door frame);
  • opens inwards (rollers are attached to the door frame).

To make the upholstery process quick and convenient, the master needs to prepare in advance: material, insulation (batting, synthetic winterizer, isolon, foam rubber at least 2 cm thick), repair tools (special nails, tape measure, scissors, hammer, screwdriver, stapler). For 1 m² of area, you will need 50 g of construction nails and 75 g of decorative ones.

Upholstery kit soundproofing, but also additionally insulate the room.

Upholstery: work algorithm

  1. Measuring the door leaf, preparing it and segments to mask the edges. Measurements are taken with a tape measure. To create blanks from the material, two strips are cut equal to the width of the door and one equal to the length. The width in both versions is 14 cm. Then the canvas is cut along the perimeter 10 cm larger than the measurements of the door. It must be removed from the hinges and the fittings dismantled.
  2. Removal of old material, surface cleaning (with special washes, spatula).
  3. A heater is placed on the door leaf, the upholstery material is fixed with decorative nails, a special band for the edges. First, the side segments are fixed with nails with an edge (wrong side out). The lower part is nailed no less than 2 cm from the edge so that the material does not rub off too quickly. Each step of the sheathing of the canvas is 10 cm.
  4. In order to provide additional noise and heat insulation, in addition to standard upholstery, it is recommended to install a sealing roller around the perimeter of the box, an additional layer of foam rubber, synthetic winterizer on both sides. Sealing rollers are placed on the side segments of the material, the edges are tightly wrapped inside. On the edge of the fold they come with decorative nails. If the product opens inward, the rollers are attached to the ends of the door frame.
  5. They make holes for locks, eyes, bend the edges and fasten them with nails.
  6. The product is hung on loops.

The upholstery is stretched so that there are no folds or wrinkles. To do this, the material is fixed with a nail, first from above, then from below, carefully straightening, and only then the side part is fixed.

For decorative design, a silk cord, wire is used, special nails are stuffed in the form of a pattern.

If plastic (fabric) is used, then another technology is used. The main tool in the process of upholstery with this material is rectangular profile strips with a special slot. A decorative baguette frame is inserted into it and its coals are sawn off at 45 °. The frame is fixed with nails (indentation 7-10 cm), insulation is placed and covered with plastic, which is fixed with nails at a step of 4 mm.

Metal front door upholstery: process specifics

The upholstery is made using laminated fiberboard (for interior decoration), vinyl leather, leatherette.

For work you will need:

  • upholstery;
  • plywood;
  • stapler, scissors;
  • insulation (the thickness should be 10 cm more than that of the door leaf);
  • plywood;
  • liquid Nails.

Sequence of steps

  1. First you need to remove the fittings, for convenience, the door leaf is placed horizontally on a hard, flat surface.
  2. Plywood blanks are attached to the surface using epoxy glue. Complete drying is expected for at least a day.
  3. To prepare the fasteners for the sealing rollers, first cut blanks (10 cm wide and length according to the door parameters) from the selected material. They are folded in half, fixed with nails or a stapler at a step of 10-15 cm.
  4. To upholster the door and prevent heat loss, foam rubber is placed on the canvas, 2 layers of batting (attached with liquid nails).
  5. The upholstery material is cut with a margin of 3 cm on each side, fixed above the insulation, first from above, and then from below with furniture nails.
  6. Fix the edges of the sealing roller filled with batting.

Upholstery without interior trim requires additional manipulation. The workpiece is cut out from a solid fiberboard, holes are made for the peephole, a lock and placed on the insulation blocks. The panel is attached to the frame with self-tapping screws.

The upholstery is economically beneficial and in terms of the functionality of the door (the material will last a long period of time, save the room from noise and cold, beautifully decorate the canvas).

If the product is one-piece, and the sheets of the inner and outer skin are welded to the frame, then the foam rubber is fixed on the sheet of the inner skin. A frame of slats is attached to it with screws, between which foam rubber or batting is placed, covered with a fiberboard panel. It should be borne in mind that with this upholstery method, the thickness of the fabric will increase significantly.

Dermantin is recommended primarily to those who want to increase the level of heat in the house, to ensure good sound insulation. It is better to use its modern analogue - vinyl leather. It has properties that are useful in terms of functionality and care: it is not afraid of frost, practically does not fade, has an elastic and at the same time strong texture, and high wear resistance. There are many models and colors of this upholstery material on the market. But the owner must also remember about the shortcomings: sensitivity to mechanical damage, temperature changes.

Door upholstery cost

Replacing the upholstery of a metal door costs about 1500 rubles. for one side, wooden - about the same. The material is paid and purchased separately. The cost of working with doors of a non-standard size (not in the format of 200 by 80 cm) must be specified individually. Finishing with laminated panels is estimated at an order of magnitude more expensive - 4500 rubles.

The price largely depends on the materials used, the range of additional work, adjusting the locks, adjusting the doors). For example, the average cost of a standard set: dark-colored leatherette, synthetic winterizer or foam rubber, decorative nails, glue is 1000 rubles, and the departure of the master is 500-800 rubles. On average, he spends 2-4 hours at work. But on sale there are ready-made kits for upholstery of entrance doors with your own hands from 200 rubles. Upholstery of doors with leather will not only decorate them, but also allow you to keep the room warm and quiet.

It is important to remember that upholstery of entrance doors with leatherette, for example, in most firms, provides only for fixing the material itself. And the installation of a sealing, decorative roller, insulation with an additional layer of foam rubber, batting, isolon, vibration isolation must be paid separately (from 200 to 1500 rubles, depending on the type of work, materials used).

In addition, they require a fee for the preliminary departure of the master to measure and select the material, dismantle the old coating, install and remove locks. It is much more profitable to change the upholstery of the front door on your own, especially since this process is not very complicated.

Underwater rocks

  1. When pulling the material, you need to carefully monitor that it is fixed correctly, without wrinkles and folds. If there is no experience in this kind of work, you can spoil the material or carry out this stage of poor quality.
  2. It is not necessary to insulate with materials popular among the people (paper, felt). They do not retain heat well and contribute to the appearance of pests.
  3. Cutouts under the eye, the lock should be smaller than the fittings.
  4. When working with the upholstery of a metal product, it is important to ensure that the material of the inner and outer upholstery does not overlap at the gluing points. Otherwise, the fastener will be of poor quality.
  5. It is better not to use rubber gaskets for sealing joints, this will interfere with the quality closing of the door.

Upholstering the front door is much cheaper and easier than replacing it, and the alternative in the form of installing decorative MFD panels is not cheap (about 3500 without a specialist leaving for measurement). Another plus of this design is warming and positive changes in the interior.

Do-it-yourself upholstery of doors will save money and be sure of the quality of the work performed.
