Wall stencils are complex and simple. Complex - these are stencils when a drawing is created using paints different colors, and simple stencils, on the contrary, are a drawing made with paint of the same color.

Exist volumetric stencils, which are performed using putty or decorative plaster . In order to make a three-dimensional stencil, you should take a ready-made stencil of flowers and butterflies for cutting, putty (it is better if you use decorative plaster instead of putty) and a spatula.

What you need to know about stencil

A stencil is a sheet of plastic with slots that form a certain pattern. Large cutouts are connected by jumpers that hold the parts together. A professional cliché has a mark for precise alignment of sheets when repeating a pattern (dot, sheet edge cut). You can simply circle the corners of the sheet with a simple pencil.

What questions may arise about the stencil:

  1. What material is it made from?
  2. How to fix the sheet on the wall?
  3. What and how to draw?
  4. Is it possible to make stencils for walls with your own hands?

Which stencil to choose

Classification will help to resolve this issue, depending on which the appropriate option is selected. According to the density of the material, the templates are divided into types:

  1. Standard;
  2. Textured or voluminous;
  3. Adhesive.

Method 1

Standard type is made of mylar (hard material), reusable. Does not sag with paint, but may tear if this paint is vigorously peeled off.

Method 2

Textured or voluminous - this is the same template from Mylar, only 1.5 times thicker. Designed for convex patterns from putty / plaster.

For storage, hard stencils are powdered with talcum powder, straightened between hard sheets, such as plywood.

The general scheme is an instruction for working with a volumetric stencil.

1. Fix volumetric stencil on the wall.

2. Fill with putty cut fragments.

3. Remove stencil, gradually bending it.

Method 3

Glue (in everyday life oracal) is a soft vinyl/PVC adhesive backed film for disposable. Convenient for drawing on difficult surfaces.

It is worth considering if adhesive stencils for wall decor are positioned by sellers as reusable. This is impossible in principle - the material is soft, deforms during removal at the end of work and cannot be reused.

Advantages and disadvantages of a rigid stencil:

  1. Durable, reusable.
  2. Easy to use - attached, fixed, painted over.
  3. But they do not adhere tightly to an uneven surface, so the edges may be smeared, they will have to be painted with a brush.

Advantages and disadvantages of the adhesive template:

  1. Adheres tightly to difficult surfaces.
  2. But disposable, because when removed it can stretch.
  3. Removing the film, you can snip off the monthly freshness of the plaster / paint.
  4. When stored for a long time, they dry out and crack.
  5. Passionate at work.

General scheme-instruction for working with oracal.

1. Glue stencil on the wall.

2. Peel off the backing, lower it down while sticking the stencil film on the wall.

3.Bottom-up roll up stencil. When rolling out the roll, the substrate is separated, and the film is glued to the wall.

4. Take out fragments of the picture. In this case, you can use a clerical knife.

5. Color in the drawing.

6. Remove film holding it parallel to the wall.

Depending on the style and, probably, originality, cliches can be divided into the following types:

  1. Regular/Standard- patterns are openwork "leaky", which is painted over with the main color.
  2. Inverse- the stencil is the opposite, here it is not the drawing that is cut out, but the background. Background cutouts are painted over dark color, and the figures will remain the same color as the wall.

Beautiful stencils for decor can be made independently from the most affordable materials:

  1. x-ray film.
  2. Cardboard. The surface is sealed with ordinary adhesive tape / linseed oil.
  3. piece vinyl wallpaper covered with paint.
  4. Binder covers.

You can draw your fantasy in a graphic editor (Corel Draw) and perform plotter trimming in any advertising agency(price approximately 70 rubles/m2). For self-cutting, a clerical knife is convenient. A dense material is placed under the template so as not to scratch the table.

How to attach the stencil to the wall

Just as a sheet of paper is fixed to the easel, so the template must be fixed to the wall.

Fixing is done in two ways:

  1. Aerosol adhesive(Marabu Fix-it, Idea, KCR01, Cadence).
  2. Masking tape.

Often glued stencils on the walls are duplicated with masking tape, because large sheets "gain weight" due to adhering paint.

Rules for using glue:

  1. Irrigate with glue not the wall, but the wrong side of the stencil;
  2. Observe the setting time of the glue, according to the instructions;
  3. Do not use on rough/textured walls;
  4. The wall must be clean from dust;
  5. For a snug fit, the stencils on the wall can be rolled with a roller through the paper;
  6. Wash off the glue warm water or a special wash.

What is masking tape good for?:

  1. Unlike the usual does not leave sticky residue;
  2. Easily removed by hand.

What paint to choose and how to apply it

You can draw on concrete, wooden, plastered, drywall walls, as well as on wallpaper for painting. Wallpaper absorbs paint better, so it will take more than on a painted surface. Depending on the type of surface, the appropriate paints are selected:

  1. Acrylic on water based - for wood, cardboard, wallpaper, concrete.
  2. Latex- concrete, gypsum concrete, plaster.

Construction shops sell paints mainly in standard packages - 1–3 kg each, so it’s better to look in art stores / on specialized sites.

Painting is done in any convenient way:

  1. Hand brush with short bristles.
  2. Roller.
  3. Sponge.
  4. aeratograph.

Unlike spray paints, which have a wide jet, airbrushes are much more convenient to work with, but they also cost money. No need to think about how to make halftones, and no need to cover large area spray walls.

How to draw

The golden rule for stenciling is that the tool must be semi-dry. Having dipped the brush (roller / sponge) in the paint, it must be squeezed out - rolled over a sheet of paper so that it is semi-dry.

The paint is rolled out with a roller, but with a brush / sponge they paint with tapping movements, as if driving in paint, no up and down movements. Hold the brush perpendicular to the wall. To saturate the color, the driving procedure is repeated.

What can be done with a stencil

Stencil drawings can be complex, but even with a single drawing, you can get a chic picture. Turn on your imagination - by laying out the drawn elements in different ways, you can get original combinations.

What can be drawn with stencils:

  1. Imitation of carpet, wallpaper;
  2. plot picture;

  1. Beat sockets / switches;

  1. A picture in a molding frame.

Drawings can be contrasting or pastel, differing from the color of the wall by 1-2 tones. The impression of perspective will be enhanced by using plain paint in light and dark tones. To do this, in one place the cliche is rolled up in a dark color - this will be the foreground, in another place it will be lighter - the second plan.

When decorating rooms, it is advisable to choose a theme that matches the style and functionality of the room - we draw fish in the bathroom, and still life / dishes in the kitchen.

Anything will fit into the living room: landscape, pattern, portrait, and in the nursery on the walls are appropriate fairy tale characters, numbers, words.

If the child is small, avoid drawing small details/abstractions. AT best case the baby will not “see” the drawing, at worst, it will become irritable.

Between the stencil and the environment there should be something in common, a link, thanks to which the general mood of the room is formed.

Ways to fit a stencil drawing into a design:

  1. Pattern- the drawing on the wall repeats the drawing on moldings, curtains, indoor plants;
  2. use color, which is repeated on decor elements, pillows, bedspreads;
  3. Pattern type- arabesques for the "eastern" room, embossed gilded scrolls for the Empire style.

What are they for?

Many people like ornamental painting or paintings on the walls, but not everyone can boast of the skills of a professional artist. For modern wall decor, you don’t need to be an artist - the main thing is to show patience and accuracy. Stencils are reusable templates made of paper or similar material. They are fixed on the wall and simply paint over the contours. The result is a stylish and interesting drawing without much effort.

If your interior seemed too boring and monotonous to you, you can easily refresh it by making drawings on the walls. Stencils can be used on smooth wallpaper for painting or on the walls themselves, applying paint to them after plastering. In addition, staining with texture, for example, with spraying or with decorative strokes, can look very interesting with stencil drawings.

All of these options are very easy to implement. with my own hands without the involvement of professionals.

Drawings created using stencils can look good in any type of interior: from classic to high-tech. Everything will depend only on the images that you choose. If your room has a free wall, you can choose a complex large-format picture. If the furniture is arranged tightly, it is better to give preference to small decorative drawings and patterns. Such images can help you highlight the semantic center in the interior or visually divide the room into several zones.

An unusual finish with drawings can also hide minor flaws in the rough finish of the walls for painting. If you have a little uneven walls, you should not make them light and smooth - this will make all the flaws obvious. If you pick something interesting color combination and paint with the image using a stencil, the flaws will become almost invisible.

To hide flaws, it is worth choosing mostly abstract ornaments without straight lines or complex paintings.

Kinds

All templates for drawing on the walls are made of thick cardboard, paper, oilcloth or similar materials. If you wish, you can even make them yourself by choosing the picture you like, printing it, and then carefully cutting it out along the contour. All possible stencils can be divided into the following types:

  • Simple stencils involve applying a single-color pattern. Most often these are large or small templates for simple patterns or contours of landscapes, city outlines, which can be depicted in one color. To apply such stencil drawings, a conventional roller is used. One paint is the easiest to work with - you can apply it in wide strokes and not think, because everything that does not cover your stencil should be painted over. You end up with a simple color image on a painted wall or wallpaper.

  • Complex stencils allow multiple colors to be used. For such an unusual coloring of the walls, complex landscapes and bizarre patterns are suitable. Sometimes a list of recommended color shades is attached to the stencil, and sometimes you should choose colors yourself. Even if you have a bright picture, it is extremely important that the colors are in harmony with each other and not be overly catchy. In addition, when working with stencils that involve the use of more than one color, it is better to apply paint with a small brush. It is important to do this very carefully, without going beyond the edges of the outlines.

  • Anti-stencils are used to paint over the wall space, and leave the pattern unpainted. Typically, such stencils are used for large shapes with complex shapes. Working with anti-stencils is no more difficult than with ordinary ones, but you need to decide right away whether you want to paint over the entire wall or just circle the image along the contour. In the second case, you will need to use another stencil that limits the area that you want to paint over.

Design

The design of modern stencils for walls for painting can be very diverse: for almost every interior, you can find unusual images that will help diversify even the most boring design project and add a unique zest to the decor of the room. When choosing a design, it is worth starting from many factors.

First of all, the size of the picture should be compared with the free space in your room: large-scale paintings will be good only if you have a wall free of furniture.

In addition, in small spaces it is better to use the most concise drawings. This applies to both form and color.

Now it is fashionable to apply various ornaments to the walls using stencils. If you choose a shade that slightly differs from the main color of the walls, such ornaments can be placed evenly over the entire surface. If you do bright patterns on their walls, they should occupy a small area, and they should be placed thoughtfully: Often, such ornaments visually divide the room into zones, form frames on the walls or highlight the semantic center of the room.

Very often all kinds of floral and floral ornaments are used, as well as oriental motifs, but now you can also find abstract geometric stencils that are perfect for modern interiors.

Simple monochrome images are also popular. So, silhouettes of characters from fairy tales and cartoons are often drawn in children's rooms, images of butterflies, flowers, fish and trees would be appropriate in the bedroom and bathroom, and images of city houses or abstract wild animals can be perfect for the living room. You can find both fairly standard and typical drawings, as well as very unusual ones - for example, ornamental trees, images of birds, a map of the world and silhouettes of people.

Depending on the color you choose, a monochrome image can look very different: it can be highlighted or, on the contrary, made less noticeable in the interior.

There are stencils that involve the use of several colors. With their help, you can create very realistic pictures. For example, very often such stencils are used to draw the outlines of a night city, a picturesque branch flowering tree or an interesting animal. At the same time, such templates are not used very often.

First of all, this is due to the fact that making such a drawing on your own is quite difficult: you need to clearly follow the instructions, carefully apply the paint exactly along the contours, and sometimes use several stencils that will overlap each other.

In addition, realistic wall painting rarely looks organically in modern types interior, rather, these options are only suitable for rooms with a traditional setting.

Any of the stencils listed above can be used in different ways. Take note of a few relevant design decisions:

  • Very often, with the help of stencils, photographs or mirrors hanging on the wall are emphasized. For example, you can make an image of a house around them, and photos will be instead of windows - this design is perfect for a living room.

  • If you like to display flower pots on the walls, you might like the idea of painting a tree or individual branches on the wall, which will create an organic interior.

  • Sometimes images are placed not only on the walls, but also on mirrors, wooden cabinets and even on the ceiling. This allows you to maintain the design of the entire room in a single style.

  • If you have arches, partitions or beams in your house that delimit space in a spacious room, they can also be easily highlighted with interesting images.

  • In the kitchen, all kinds of simple images cups of coffee, bottles, vegetables and fruits. AT modern kitchens such drawings look very organic, and in studio apartments in this way it will be very easy to separate the kitchen area.

  • Often, with the help of stencils, beautiful life-affirming inscriptions are made on the walls or hieroglyphs are drawn. If you want to write own words, you can make a stencil yourself or order its manufacture. However, it is often possible to choose suitable inscriptions from the proposed assortment in stores.

  • With the help of drawings made according to templates, you can easily decorate a children's room. The process of such drawing is simple, so you can even do joint creativity. In stores you can find big variety stencils for the image of characters of children's cartoons.

Stencils can be made independently or to order, but most often they buy ready-made models in stores. You can buy stencils in almost any home and repair market - if wallpaper, paint and various finishing elements are sold there, stencils should also be there.

Now online stores have become very popular: although you cannot see the goods live, the variety of assortment and low prices compensate for this inconvenience.

To do right choice, even before going to the store, you should decide what image you are looking for. Well, if the wall decoration is already completely ready - this is how you will select a template for a drawing under concrete interior. If you are unsure of the details and conventional stores, and websites have consultants ready to help you. However, It is important to determine not only the form, but also the quality of the product.

Ready templates usually made of thick cardboard or thin plastic. Make sure the material is strong enough. This is especially important if you are going to use the same template over and over again. At the same time, the lightness and flexibility of the material is important so that it is convenient to fix it on the wall.

Pay attention to the size of your stencil - if your wall space is limited, measurements must be taken very precisely to realize your design idea.

In fact, any stencils can be used for walls, ceilings, floors, and furniture. Only paint will matter - for the floor, mirror and wooden surfaces special dyes are required.

If you are working with walls after plaster, with walls already painted in one tone, or with wallpaper for painting, you will need the most ordinary wall paint. Options from different manufacturers may vary in color saturation, possible odor and durability, but they will all work. For the ceiling, you can use the same paint.

If you are going to make drawings also on the floor or on furniture, you should choose a special coloring composition, depending on the materials.

Most often, the paint on the wall with large simple stencils is applied with a roller. This is a fairly simple way to quickly paint over large smooth surfaces. The size of the roller can be selected depending on the image you want to take. The technology of working with a roller is very simple: you need to pour a little paint into a flat container, roll the roller over it so that it evenly acquires the desired color, and then apply the paint according to a stencil previously fixed on the wall.

If you paint on textured wallpaper on a stencil, it can be difficult to work with a roller: individual protrusions on the wallpaper will be painted over, and gaps may form between them. It is best to use a sprayer to apply stencil paint on such wallpapers.- so you can easily evenly cover the entire desired area.

You can make the image textured. To do this, paint can be applied to a smooth surface with a stencil attached to it with large or small splashes, textured strokes or drops. Nozzles for such application can also be purchased at large hypermarkets for repairs. It is no more difficult to distribute paint in this way than with a conventional roller or brush.

Now stencil rollers are popular. They have a prominent convex pattern on their surface, which is imprinted during application. Such stencil rollers are suitable if you want to cover an entire wall with small ornaments.

Finally, if you've chosen a complex stencil that uses multiple colors, a brush is usually the best choice for these types of images. The size of the brush should be chosen depending on how small details are to be drawn according to your stencil.

Don't choose a brush that is too small, which will take much longer to work with, but a brush that is too large can make the drawing messy.

Drawings on the walls were made long before our era. Hundreds of years later, rock carvings make the "interior" of the caves not only attractive, but also unique.

Nothing has changed. Well-chosen, and properly executed, wall painting will help transform the room.

Screen printing on the wall is an easy way to achieve the desired zoning of space. By making small changes, you can hide the flaws of the layout or, conversely, pay attention to the advantages.

The execution of this painting is both very complex and very simple. The difficulty of the work is largely determined by the chosen technique of execution, the size and number of details in the outline. You need to figure out what is right for your home.

How to make the right choice: types of stencils

Determine with what number of shades will work:

  • One tone of paint. Use if you need to apply various inscriptions or graphics. This method is popular when drawing silhouettes or ornaments.
  • Several shades or colors are used at the same time. It makes it possible to create whole pictures. This technique is chosen when they want to apply an auxiliary drawing to the main drawing in order to highlight or hide some part.

Volumetric or embossed. Instead of paint, at the initial stage, putty is used (coating thickness does not exceed 3 mm), which gives the surface a certain silkiness. Then, paint is applied to the pattern. To perform such work, you need to confidently own a spatula. Proper lighting and careful execution allows you to achieve a 3D effect.

reverse stencil, where the paint is applied not inside, but outside the stencil. The main drawing (cut-out - a part that is usually thrown away) is fixed to the surface and painted not inside, but behind it. Dyed or small plot, creating a kind of contour, or the entire surface beyond the boundaries of the clipping.

Decide on stencil quality. Think about how many times you want to use your stencil.

  • Disposable. Apply one or two patterns. The quality of the material is not so important, the main thing is that it can withstand our manipulations.
  • Reusable. When doing large-scale illustrations or when they want to create a wallpaper effect. The stencil is made of durable material resistant to moisture.

You should not rush when choosing, it is better to think carefully and prepare everything.

Making a stencil yourself

Having decided on the pattern, we will select material for the stencil and proceed to its manufacture.

For disposable, small templates can use a simple office paper, cardboard or other dense material. For example, polyethylene film, foil, parchment. If the budget allows you to better choose a self-adhesive film (it is strong enough and able to withstand moisture).

Do the following:

  1. Draw or transfer the drawing you like on the prepared base. In some cases, it can simply print on the printer. In others, it is better to use tracing paper. If this is a transparent film or parchment (fix the layout on them with a needle or tape so that it does not move), carefully circle the image with a marker. Not very dense base (for example, plain paper) can be made more solid by sticking adhesive tape on it over the entire surface.
  2. Lay the workpiece on any surface that you are not afraid to cut. With a clerical knife (if more convenient, use scissors) carefully cut out the inner areas of the contour so that the main pattern is hollow, but at the same time all the details of the image hold well.

Tip: Try to make even cuts, then the template has fewer gaps with the surface. The drawing is clear and beautiful. Pay attention to small details. They must be securely fastened.

For complex or repetitive illustrations, do reusable template. Choose very thick cardboard, acetate film or thin plastic sheets are suitable.

Tip: You can laminate paper, it will acquire the necessary moisture resistance. Thick cardboard will become more rigid if coated with waterproof paint.

Do the same as in the previous case, taking into account some nuances:

  • When making large or complex drawings, you should break them into parts, which will be combined in the process of transferring to the wall. Otherwise, it will be very difficult to keep them when painting.
  • You can fix the overall pattern on the basis with masking tape, adhesive tape, or even glue it (at several points).
  • Cut out contours can be strengthened by gluing them with tape. Having pressed the middle of the adhesive tape to the cut out border, bend its edges along the borders (one edge of the adhesive tape inward, the other outward). You will achieve a snug fit of the material to the surface, the cuts will be smoother.

How to use wall stencils?

Exist a few rules to achieve the desired result:

  1. Correctly placing the stencil on the prepared wall surface will help markup. This is necessary when applying an ornament (a slight distortion will definitely catch your eye). large drawings, which were divided into parts, after marking will be exactly in place.
  2. The stencil needs to be securely to fix on the surface. Using self-adhesive film take off protective layer and stick on the wall. Cardboard, plastic, paper is fixed with masking tape, adhesive tape. AT last resort, press firmly with your hand. Other materials should be fixed special adhesives temporary fix (eg Spiri or Takter). They don't leave visible traces, but securely fasten the stencil.
  3. Choose your paint depending on the surface. Suitable for concrete or brick acrylic paint. Use a small amount of paint on a brush or sponge, otherwise it may fall outside the stencil. Try to distribute the paint evenly.
  4. When choosing a multi-color stencil, think in advance color scheme. Which will be the first, second, etc. Apply subsequent colors after the previous patterns have dried. Performing a three-dimensional drawing with a stencil, the paint is applied after the putty has dried.
  5. Application technique reverse screen pattern requires a preliminary calculation of the density of the application of paint and the width of the halo. An image made of a material impervious to paint is fixed on the wall. Paint (spray) makes a halo of the desired shade. Keep the sprayer at a distance of at least 20 cm from the wall.
  6. The stencil is removed from the wall immediately after applying the paint. If you use it repeatedly, don't forget to wipe it off before using it again. When applying putty, on the contrary, leave the stencil to dry.
