Decoupage from fabric on an old door. How to update an old door using decoupage technique

Now there are many ways to decorate and design a variety of furniture, dishes, albums and other things. One of these methods is considered to be decoupage - the technique of cutting out elements from paper and transforming various objects by gluing. Do-it-yourself decoupage of doors is considered very relevant (photo below), which will add originality and brightness to your home. There are a lot of options for such work, a few examples are presented in the photo below.

Necessary materials

  • It is not difficult to transform doors with your own hands, it does not require large financial investments or a lot of time. In order to make decoupage of doors with your own hands, you will need:
  • Decoupage cards with the necessary pattern;
  • Glue;
  • Door paint, preferably acrylic;
  • Scissors;
  • Putty;
  • Paraffin candle;
  • Sandpaper.

Step-by-step instruction

First you need to wipe the door with a damp cloth, and then wipe it dry. Strips of adhesive tape must be glued along the entire width and length of the door so as not to stain the walls with paint.

Paint the wall with dark paint. After drying, with the help of a candle, apply a layer of paraffin.

We cover the entire surface of the door with white paint, it is better to use acrylic, because. It dries faster and doesn't have a strong scent.

Then we take a decoupage card and cut out the necessary decor details. You should lower the card for 5-10 minutes in cold water. After the pattern is wet, you can wet it with a napkin and spread it with glue. Glue the card to the dried door, so that no bubbles and wrinkles form (you can smooth it with a brush).

When the card is completely glued and dried, unnecessary areas of the drawing can be puttied.

On the dried putty, you need to walk with sandpaper. As you can see, doing such work with your own hands is not so difficult. You can decorate the door if you have all the items at hand. You can see an example of a successful door decor in the photo below.

Decoupage of an interior door will change an old and unsightly door beyond recognition. Such beauty can be done independently, without resorting to the help of professionals.

We use photo wallpaper

You can stick photo wallpapers that are designed specifically for doors (as shown in the photo). Of course, this option will not be very cheap, but it will please the eye with landscapes, exotic flowers, wild animals or children's drawings. You can also make a redesign of an interior door in a budget form with napkins or ordinary wallpaper. There are several nuances for decorating with photo wallpapers: the doors must be of a standard size, and after a long operation, the brightness of the wallpaper changes. At home, doors can be decorated with vinyl and paper wallpaper.

Bilateral doors

When decoupage double doors, it is recommended to follow the pattern on the wallpaper. You can put plywood on glass doors and use it as a basis for gluing. The remaining surfaces free from wallpaper can be covered with paint. It is better to observe the contrast of colors for a more effective result.

We decorate the doors with fabric

This technique of decoupage with door fabric is very difficult, because often the glue leaves stains on the fabric. To prevent the edges of the fabric from crumbling, it is better to tuck them. But on the other hand, all the work is not in vain, because it turns out very beautiful, original and simple!

An interesting solution can be obtained by sticking geographical maps, musical notes or your own posters.

Working with fabric

We use three-layer napkins

But nevertheless, three-layer napkins are considered the most popular, which are sold in any store and have bright and unusual patterns. To decorate the door with napkins, you do not need to have special skills and abilities. The element you are interested in is cut out with scissors, glued to the necessary piece of furniture, then varnished.

You can complement the interior using original design techniques: cracks, scuffs, gold and silver lines. You can decorate the door with three-layer napkins in the style of vintage, baroque, modern and others. Read, for example, about Provence and Shabby Chic styles.

Creating beautiful things yourself and completely free of charge is not at all difficult, it just takes a little effort and imagination! And best of all, you can make them yourself!

Often we are forced to change a high-quality thing that has not yet lost its functionality, because over the years it has lost its original appearance or is simply outdated. Particularly sorry to part with expensive items. We usually encounter this when renovations begin and we want to freshen up the interior. With the development of the decoupage technique, the hostess has the opportunity not only to solve these problems and save money, but also to reveal her creative potential, decorate the apartment with unique and inimitable elements.

Initially, small household items were decorated in this way - a box for ladies' little things, an old photo album or the back of a comb. But new decoupage methods allow you to apply drawings even on large objects, without reducing their practicality. Now the decoration of old interior doors has become popular and relevant.

Basic technique techniques

To learn how to make decoupage on a wooden surface with your own hands, you need to get acquainted with the types of application. In the process of decorating, you can combine them, achieving the desired result.

  • Direct drawing. This is the basic way of decorating, it involves even gluing the material to the surface. Great for woodworking.
  • Reverse decoupage. It is used to work with transparent parts. The difference between the technique and the previous one is in the sequence of actions - the picture is attached on the other side of the glass. It will be appropriate to apply this method when decorating glazed doors.
  • The smoky method requires experience and skill. The result of such work will be very reminiscent of artistic painting - the borders of the drawing become so invisible. Here you have to work on halftones, shading and smooth transitions.
  • Decopatch. A feature is the fragmentary application of the pattern: napkins, wallpaper or fabric torn into small pieces are applied to the plane overlapping or end-to-end, which makes the pattern unusual and interesting.
  • 3D decoupage is used to add volume to a drawing. It is more applied than the main way of decor. You will have to work with modeling cream, putty or any other quick-drying materials.

What you need to decoupage an old door with your own hands

The first step to the beginning of creativity is the selection and purchase of all the necessary funds.

What you need:

  • A set of artistic brushes from thin and soft to wide, hard. The first is needed for drawing details and contours, and the second is for applying glue.
  • Sharp scissors for preparing paper drawings. By the way, from French the word "découpage" is translated as "cut". So without this inventory in the work can not do.
  • Sandpaper for preparing the surface and cleaning it from bumps, paint residues.
  • Paints. They can be both professional and ordinary amateur, taken from a backpack from a schoolboy son. If the plans include glass surface decor, acrylic paints will also be needed.
  • Glue. Here, inexpensive PVA proved to be excellent, which is also easy to find in every second household. You can use more expensive analogues: construction glue or a special decoupage varnish, but the first option is more suitable for beginners.
  • To decorate with your own hands with a smoky decoupage method, you will need artistic sponges for shading, which at home can be easily replaced with an ordinary dishwashing sponge.
  • Door paint and varnish on top. You will have to go to these costs if you no longer like the old color and do not fit into the interior. Then you will need to choose a different shade, which will become the background for the picture.
  • The main materials are napkins, wallpaper, pieces of fabric, pre-printed patterns or purchased special decoupage paper.
  • Additionally, you can add any details. The only limit here is the imagination. Stickers, postcards, colored ribbon, 3D modeling mass, various coatings, sparkles, rhinestones and much more.

Step-by-step instructions for beginners: decoupage wallpaper on wood

One of the easiest ways.

Creative ideas for decoupage interior doors

It is good for ease and speed of execution. The main stages of decoration:

  1. The entire door must be thoroughly washed. If the old paint is not suitable for the desired pattern, then remove it and carefully clean the surface with sandpaper. If it is necessary to apply a primer coat before a new painting, we do this. In the event that the old layer does not need to be removed, we simply clean the door of dirt and degrease it. As a result, at the first stage, we should get a ready-made background for work.
  2. If you are using construction adhesive that needs to be diluted beforehand, then you need to do this at this stage of preparation. If you have given your preference to PVA, you do not need to do any additional manipulations with it.
  3. Next, we recall our school years and engage in artistic cutting - the most successful elements stand out from the entire canvas of wallpaper: flowers, geometric shapes, entire compositions. We select the sizes of patterns and outline their location.
  4. Glue is applied to the surface of the door, then a pattern detail is applied. When it is glued evenly and without bubbles, it is necessary to wait until it dries completely.
  5. The final stage is the coating with a transparent varnish. This is done so that wet cleaning can be carried out, the pattern will remain protected.

Decoupage from napkins on wood: step by step instructions for beginners

This algorithm of actions will be a little more complicated, but the pattern is much more elegant and thinner. Here are the main stages of decorating:

  1. Cleaning the surface from contamination.
  2. After the entire door has been thoroughly washed, you need to select the area on which the pattern will be applied and isolate it. You can do this with ordinary cling film and paper tape: the entire remaining surface must be protected from possible drops, stains, glue and paint.
  3. We prepare the open area for work: be sure to prime it (drying will take about five hours), then rub it with beeswax or paraffin.
  4. The dyeing process is also more labor intensive. It is necessary to cover the place of application of the pattern in two layers: first, white acrylic paint, then the shade that will serve as the background of the composition.
  5. Glue is also applied directly to the door, and the paper pattern is applied on top.

    The layers that make up the napkin are separated. When decoupage, only the top layer with the image is used. If you glue a whole napkin, the pattern will be spoiled by emerging bubbles.

  6. Elements of the pattern are cut out and glued to the surface. Make sure there are no gaps or air bubbles. You can smooth the picture with a sponge or brush, directing the tool from the center to the edges. Let the glue dry.
  7. After that, we putty the edges, masking the seams, and lightly clean the surface with fine sandpaper.
  8. If necessary, you can draw the contours with paint, add additional decorative elements.
  9. The last step is varnishing.

How to make decoupage doors with your own hands?

Decoupage and door decor: how to decorate an old interior room, and how to ennoble the front door?

It often happens that some object or element of the interior is still able to perform its functions, but at the same time there is a desire to update it, but at the same time not to spend a lot of money. Entrance and interior doors are no exception. On the one hand, they are an important element of the interior, and on the other hand, if treated with care, they can last for decades. And here the best way out for those who want to update their home is such an option as decorating an old door.

Here, the owners can show their imagination to the fullest, while, of course, one should not forget about taste and sense of proportion, but under certain conditions and combinations, pretentiousness can look quite attractive. There are various ways to decorate an old door. You can limit yourself to repainting to match with new wallpaper, or you can try the fashionable method today - decoupage.

Do-it-yourself author's decor of interior doors: what is decoupage?

However, this design method has become fashionable once again. Literally, decoupage means “cutting out” and consists in applying cut out drawings and applications to various objects and interior elements, followed by fixing them on the surface. In addition to decoupage of interior doors, this decoration method is often used to update furniture, dishes or fabrics.

This simple and at the same time very effective and effective way to decorate a door with your own hands has been known for many centuries. Once upon a time, such decoration imitated expensive inlay on wood, Japanese or Chinese miniatures, etc. This made it possible to inexpensively create high-quality imitations of expensive handicrafts. It is no coincidence that in Italy this method received another name - arte povera or "the art of the poor."

How to do decoupage of doors with your own hands? The door leaf must be cleaned of dust and dirt, as well as degreased. Platbands and walls are pre-covered with masking tape, and a film is laid on the floor. The entire surface is primed and then painted in a tone that matches the background of the application.

The drawing is applied from decoupage cards, which are soaked in water, and then the application is carefully applied to the door. This process is in many ways similar to drawing a picture from children's decals. In this case, it is necessary to ensure that no wrinkles or bubbles form, and if they occur, they must be smoothed out before drying.

When the drawing dries, its edges are fixed with a putty that matches the color of the background. The dried putty is carefully polished with fine-grained sandpaper. If necessary, this finish can be covered with one or more protective layers of clear lacquer.

How to decorate the front door, ennoble it and give it an original look?

But decoupage is not the only way to decorate a door with your own hands, especially when it comes to entering an apartment. Here you can and should use other methods of design. You can start small, for example, update the finish of the fittings. It is enough to repaint the hinges or the door handle, and the front door will look different.

A more complex and time-consuming way to decorate old doors is staining. Despite the obviousness and seeming simplicity, painting the front door leaf can not only create a new image of your home for guests and neighbors, but also largely refresh the interior of the hallway. Of course, this requires a door for painting, but this can be foreseen even at the stage of its acquisition.

This method is especially in demand by fans to regularly update the interior.

A more original way to decorate a door is to imitate a paneled door leaf. To do this, a polyurethane baguette is glued to the door surface, thereby imitating the pattern of the panels. After the glue dries, the entire surface is painted, and the result is a high-quality imitation of panels. The advantage of this finishing option is that this pattern and color can be changed periodically, each time updating the interior of your home.

Decoupage questions and answers

How to update an old door?

If a wooden door is morally obsolete or has lost its presentation (cracked, peeling paint, worn or scratched varnish, there are chips on the glass, etc.), it is not very difficult to give a new life to it. Any person can cope with this, even without skills.

There are several common answers to the question: how to decorate an old door with your own hands. For example, a solid room door is pasted over with wallpaper; the door leaf with a regular glass insert is painted in a different color and a stained glass window is added. Entrance doors are no longer fashionable to upholster with textiles or panels - modern homeowners decorate the inner sash with graphic drawings or original prints.

Do-it-yourself door decoupage

However, how to decorate the door is up to you. Most importantly, do not forget to show imagination!

Decor (restoration) of interior doors

The decor of interior doors can be very different:

  • the easiest way to decorate doors is to trim with molding;
  • traditional - sticking PVC film or wallpaper;
  • the most difficult is art painting.

But any decorative work is carried out after the restoration. First, the wooden surface is cleaned of the old coating (sanded with fine-grained sandpaper), then dust and small debris are removed with a vacuum cleaner or rag. After that, irregularities and cracks are puttied, covered with a special primer on top and, if necessary, with a layer of paint and varnish solution.

How to decorate the front door

Decorating entrance doors is a more difficult task, because the cold of the entrance or street, sometimes even snow and wind, affect the outer surface. Therefore, there is nowhere for fantasy to roam outside. And the most important thing when answering the question of how to ennoble the door from the outside is to protect the surface, and only then, how to give it a pleasant appearance. But on the other hand, the inner sash can become the pride of the owners and the envy of visitors to the house. And here it becomes a testing ground for your ideas!

Perhaps you can’t think of anything better than decorating an old door with prints. A successful plot will transform the hallway and bring new accents to the interior. The photo shows how you can decorate the door to the apartment, although graphic patterns are now in vogue - choose what you like.

How to decorate doors - original solutions

In addition to these design methods, there are others - less popular or more complex. For example, the door to the nursery, which in the coming years may suffer from the hands of a child, is simply covered with a layer of glue and sprinkled with semolina. And on top they paint in a bright color and apply the simplest drawings through a stencil.

How to make do-it-yourself door decoupage

Decoupage of doors is a restoration technique for covering the surface with finished drawings (from napkins, wallpaper, fabric) or using ready-made cards purchased at a specialized store. Although decoupage is often compared to appliqué, the technology is slightly different.

  1. First, the web is prepared (see above).
  2. Cut out the selected drawings, adjust them to their location.
  3. The soaked decoupage card or fragments of napkins get wet and cover with a layer of PVA.
  4. The door is also covered with glue.
  5. Glue the drawing, carefully smooth it.
  6. A thin layer of putty is applied along the edge of the image (selected by color).

Before you start decorating doors with your own hands, we advise you to watch a video plot of work using the decoupage technique.

DIY door decor

Which of the following update methods are available at home? It all depends on the experience of a person, his artistic talents and preparedness. For example, it is almost impossible to paint beautifully or create stained glass without the necessary skills. But pasting even with the most modern wallpaper or applying prints is possible for almost everyone.

And also with your own hands it is quite possible to decorate the door using the decoupage technique. Although initially this technology was applied to canvases of a smaller area - to cabinets, bedside tables, secretaries, today this method of decorating is very popular and is used on a larger scale, it can be an entrance door, a bathroom door, and interior doors. The main thing is to properly prepare the canvas and be patient.

Interior openings after repair remain open or closed with old doors due to the high cost of new ones, however, you can always update the panels by making decoupage of the inner door with glass with your own hands.

What is decoupage and what is the value of this type of decor?

This art of decorating various objects has existed for more than 5 centuries, and it began in Venice. The masters of this city noted the high cost of Chinese household items, decorated with the finest inlay or carving, but since they did not know the technique, a skillful imitation was created. A pattern was applied to dishes or furniture, most often it was a thin fabric with some kind of pattern, and then the surface was covered with several layers of varnish. Sometimes their number reached 30 or more. Actually, in this technique, you can decorate anything, including glass. Varnishing will give it a matte finish, but at the same time the pattern will gain depth, and at the same time will not prevent the penetration of light.

Decoupled chest

Decoupage became widespread due to the fact that the cost of such products was significantly lower than that of Chinese household items. That is why this technique of drawing a picture with subsequent varnishing was at one time called the art of the poor (in Italian - arte povera). Over time, decoupage spread throughout the world, it is even known that even icons were made in this way in Russia. However, subsequently the technique was forgotten, using less and less, and its peak of popularity arose quite recently. Given the variety of modern materials, the use of such decor can have very wide possibilities. It should be especially noted that this art is accessible to everyone, it does not require special training and some complicated devices for doing it yourself.

Learning the basics of glass decoration

First of all, you should remember that you are making decor for yourself, and not for sale, and therefore it is not necessary to follow the path of the Venetian masters and apply dozens of layers of varnish, you can do just one. Sometimes you need to cover the drawing itself with a special transparent decoupage glue, in order to then carefully remove part of the paper base from the back and get the thinnest film with the image. This is required mainly when working with printer printouts on thick paper, which is difficult to apply to glass due to its opacity. Having impregnated with glue or varnish the top layer where the pattern is printed, you will be able to gently soak the paper on the back side.

Glass plate after decoupage

It is noteworthy that, unlike opaque surfaces, door glass decoupage can be either direct or reverse. The first option is standard - applying a napkin or other material with a pattern outwards, both wooden and metal household items are decorated in the same way. Another thing is the reverse application of the image, when the finishing layer is located behind the glass, turned to face it. In this case, the clarity of the pattern will remain even after applying varnish, which will cover the back side of the paper or other base attached to the door glass. However, this option cannot be applied to matte, translucent products.

There are several styles in which the decor is made, these are Victorian, Provence, country, the so-called shabby chic, which has existed since the late 80s, simplicity (using a minimum number of elements) and ethno. Actually, all these styles correspond to those used for interiors in residential premises, because it is necessary that the decorated object fit into the environment. Otherwise, as already mentioned, you won’t need any special tools for work, everything you need to do decoupage on a glass door with your own hands is usually at home for everyone. The main thing is paper scissors, with which you will cut out the images you like. Different-sized brushes, a paper knife, emery, a sponge and a roller will come in handy. And how to apply all this - we will tell further.

How is glass decoupage done?

The simplest option is to use a special napkin or card that is applied to the glass, like a decal. In this case, you only need to prepare the surface by degreasing it with window cleaner and wiping it well with a clean paper towel. Then you should apply a special decoupage glue or any other suitable for glass to the desired area, that is, one that remains transparent after drying. Now we overlay the image, in a direct or reverse way, which we talked about earlier, and then carefully align the thin paper layer with a roller, at the same time squeezing out excess glue. With a cotton swab dipped in alcohol, we remove the glue that has come out, and if there are streaks, then we clean them off with a paper knife. And it remains to cover everything with acrylic varnish.

Decoupage on glass with your own hands

It is somewhat more difficult to work with images cut out from magazines or printed on a printer, since in this case the paper will be very thick. To avoid a pronounced transition from the surface to be decorated to the pattern, which is called a "ledge", you need to prepare a cut piece of paper. To do this, cover the front surface of the sheet with acrylic varnish, wait for it to absorb and dry, cover with a second layer and so on up to 5 times. Now we patiently wait for everything to completely harden, after which the drawing will be firmly stuck with a transparent film, and you can soak the back layer of paper in warm water. Next, carefully peel it off with a thin sandpaper or pumice stone, the pattern will remain on a thin varnish film, which we glue to the glass in the reverse way indicated above.

If the image is not too bright, it is recommended to create a background for it with, be sure to overlay it in 2 layers after gluing the picture (but in no case before). The glue must dry so that during the acrylic coating process the applied paper does not move. In this case, the decoration is carried out only in the opposite way, so that the picture is pressed against the glass, and its back side, along with the other surface, is painted. Use sponge brushes, they will create a beautiful texture, unlike fleecy ones, after which stains in the form of stripes often remain. After coating with acrylic paint, after it dries, apply several layers of acrylic varnish.

To apply several images with your own hands in a certain order, make markings on the opposite side of the glass with a washable felt-tip pen or glue a sheet of paper with risks with masking tape.

A few subtleties when decorating door glass with pictures

If you want to glue a picture from a fashionable glossy magazine, be sure to soak the page in warm water first, otherwise it will go in waves after smearing with glue. The same applies to printouts on thick printer paper. By the way, it is much easier to get high-quality and bright images on the door glass, using often even denser large-format photo paper for an inkjet printer. By covering it with a water-free varnish and drying it thoroughly, you can tear off most of the layers of the sheet in one movement, leaving only a thin face, with a pattern. If delamination is not observed, remove the fibers with pellets, after soaking the sheet with a varnished front surface.

Materials and tools for decoupage

If you use special decoupage cards or napkins, it is not necessary to pre-soak them, you can simply put liquid glue in a puddle, lightly dip it into it and, taking it out with tweezers with rounded or soft tips, put it on the glass. You can also do otherwise - lightly spray a napkin from a spray bottle, and then immediately attach it to the door glass, pre-lubricated with glue. Slightly moistened paper will smooth out well with a roller or brush and will not wrinkle afterwards, after drying. And, finally, one more trick from the masters: before you decoupage the door with a napkin with your own hands, gently smooth it, spray it with hairspray and then smooth it with an iron.

Attention - only water-based varnishes warp and wrinkle napkins and rice paper, so try to use undiluted formulations.

Separately, it is worth mentioning which adhesives are suitable for fixing the pattern on glass. In addition to the special ones, the acrylic varnish already mentioned above (only undiluted), paste, nail polish, regular glue stick, PVA, wallpaper paste (again, undiluted with water) and even egg white will suit you. All of them will give a thin and, most importantly, transparent layer, which is especially important when doing do-it-yourself decoupage using the reverse technique. Of the materials, in addition to those listed, you can also use wallpapers, postcards and photographs, having previously varnished them, you need to process them on the back with a thin sandpaper, carefully removing one layer of paper after another. Floral felt is also suitable for applying to a flat surface, but you need to use a large amount of glue for it.

And now let's talk a little about giving the decor a touch of antiquity, which is suitable for Victorian style, and for country, and especially for shabby chic. It is not difficult to artificially age the image itself; it is enough to briefly immerse it in a decoction of onion peel, tea or freshly brewed strong grain coffee. Another option: fill a wide and flat container with turpentine, stir in it a few drops of burnt sienna oil paint, and then immerse the drawing in the resulting solution for 2 seconds. It will turn out to be a kind of old parchment with an engraving. And, finally, also a fairly simple way - to dissolve a little bitumen in white spirit to get a composition that is pale in color, with which the already glued drawing is covered. An image applied in a direct way can be walked a couple of times with a metal brush, vertically and horizontally, this will give a cracking effect.

In order to transform the interior, bring novelty into it in the cheapest way and at the same time enjoy the result, you can use the universal decoupage technique. Therefore, we will consider how to update interior doors with our own hands using such applications.

What is decoupage?

In simple words, this is a technique for cutting out a pattern from special napkins and sticking it on an object. It has existed for several centuries and is very popular today, because, in fact, it is very simple and affordable. The range of napkins with different patterns is so large that you can easily choose the option to your liking. When decorating interior doors, you should take into account the overall interior design of the room or the entire apartment, if you plan to decorate all the doors.

Do not forget that they should not introduce an imbalance, but, on the contrary, it is beneficial to emphasize the overall style.

It is doubly pleasant when the work done is pleasing to the eye and delivers aesthetic pleasure, especially if it is not possible to replace old doors with new ones. After all, they are one of the most important components of design details. Decoupage of old doors will help to update the interior, give comfort to the space and emphasize the good taste of the owner of the house, apartment. You can decorate not only a wooden surface, but also plastic, veneer, eco-veneer and even glass.

List of materials you may need:

  • decoupage cards;
  • acrylic primer;
  • acrylic paints;
  • craquelure varnish;
  • ordinary varnish;
  • Sander;
  • drill bits;
  • building hair dryer;
  • special tool for removing the old coating;
  • sandpaper of different fractions;
  • putty knife;
  • PVA glue or special glue;
  • brushes;
  • roller;
  • masking tape;
  • ruler;
  • pencil;
  • scissors;
  • construction knife;
  • putty.

Door preparation

First you need to cover the floors with oilcloth, as there will be a lot of dust and debris. Next, you need to get rid of the old paint or varnish. If the paint is very peeling, then it is better to walk with a spatula and clean off everything that is peeled off. After that, sand the surface with coarse sandpaper. It happens that the varnish or paint is strongly ingrained into the wood and it is not possible to remove them by sanding.

In this case, they can help special tools that are sold at any hardware store, or a building hair dryer. There are a number of nozzles for a drill or grinder, but some difficulty with this method of removing the old coating is that the pressure must be uniform, otherwise the surface may become uneven. Plus, this method is inconvenient when processing is carried out in a residential area.

If the door leaf is not removed, then everything will have to be done on weight, and there is more dust. In general, the choice is yours.

After removing the coating in any way, you need to walk on the surface with fine-grained sandpaper. Then clean the entire door of dust by wiping with a rag. In hard-to-reach places, a brush is used. If the surface of the door is paneled, then in the end it is better to walk with a vacuum cleaner without a nozzle. So exactly all the dust will be removed and you can proceed to the next step.

Visually assess the condition of the door: if there are large or small cracks on the wooden sheet, it is necessary cover them with a special putty and let it dry well. Also available at any hardware store. After drying, go over the areas smeared with putty again with fine sandpaper. Everything is then primed. This applies to wooden doors.

As a rule, there are no damages on canvases made of veneer and eco-veneer. Therefore, they can simply be wiped with a cloth to remove dust and dirt and covered with soil using a roller.

In hard-to-reach places, a brush is used. After preparation, you can proceed to the decor.

creative ideas

There are many design options, and it all depends on the imagination. You can pick up a picture that is quite large, which goes from bottom to top or vice versa. Most often, such drawings are independently printed on paper, and then transferred to the subject. Or, with small applications, they are glued to pre-planned places and create a certain composition. Decoupage cards are selected in accordance with the general background of the door. The canvas does not have to be painted in one color, sometimes a combined color looks more interesting.

It is worth considering the end result in advance, but if necessary, make adjustments in the process of work. The drawing should look harmonious and stand out effectively. Depending on the design style, these can be both monochrome pictures and quite contrasting ones. In addition to floral ornaments, birds, animals, fairy-tale and cartoon characters, trees, and geometric shapes are popular.

If it is necessary to select a monochrome drawing in some places, then with the help of drawing it is easy to do, for this you don’t even need drawing skills.

Mark those areas that need to be highlighted, “by eye”, and draw them along the lines with the paint of the desired color. No need to try hard not to go beyond the boundaries of the lines - it's okay if some areas are not ideal, provided that the proportions are still maintained. The result will be an effect as if the whole pattern is hand-drawn, which will give the door a high cost. After all, as you know, manual work is valued higher.

When everything is ready, once again carefully look at your creation: does everything suit you or do you need to add something else. If you like everything, then the completion of the process of decoupage and door decor will be the application of varnish. There are different types to choose from. Glossy, matte, semi-gloss, craquelure. Apply with roller or brush.

To artificially age the surface and make it cracked, craquelure varnish is used.

Cracks can be made of different thicknesses and sizes. The stronger the thermal effect during drying, the thicker the cracks. In any case, they will not be the same, which gives the effect of naturalness. Read the instructions carefully before using - all the nuances are indicated there.

Other accessories can be used in the decor if they are appropriate:

  • sequins;
  • beads;
  • rhinestones;
  • buttons;
  • braid and lace;
  • glass or ceramic mosaic;
  • toppers (words from plywood);
  • stucco;
  • moldings.

And much more, the list is long.

Decoupage doors with wallpaper

Surely everyone on the mezzanine has the remaining pieces of wallpaper after the repair. They can also be used to decorate interior doors. Either as a background, or as a replacement for decoupage cards, provided that the pattern matches the idea and style. In the same way, fix the cut pieces with PVA glue in the intended places. After that, so that the borders of the patterns are not visible, you can use a sponge to tint the necessary areas with background paint and, after drying, slightly level the surface with fine sandpaper.

There is also such an option when a drawing from a decoupage card is glued directly onto the wallpaper if they act as a background. Of course, the wallpaper in this case must be plain and light, otherwise the pattern will be poorly visible. When only wallpapers without decoupage cards are used, they are glued into the parts of the door where there is a panel, or onto protruding parts, or the door is completely pasted over. You can also use wallpaper with a 3d pattern. Here, too, the choice is huge.

Decoupage technique can be used to update interior doors in different styles:

  • Art Nouveau;
  • provence;
  • vintage;
  • shabby chic;
  • country;
  • classic;
  • pop Art;
  • modern.

Turn on your imagination and get creative. A good mood will help you easily implement your plan, and the result will bring pleasure.

Master class on decoupage doors with your own hands, see below.

Doors play an important role in interior design. There are many different models in stores, but high-quality ones cost a lot of money, and you usually don’t want to look at cheap ones. There is a good option - to update the old doors with your own hands. There are many techniques, and not the most complex ones, that allow you to correct the situation for little money.

Training

Whatever method you choose to update the old interior door, you will need to carry out a number of preparatory work. Usually old painted specimens are going to decorate. Painting is usually amateur, so there are more than enough bumps, sagging and other minor defects. All of them need to be aligned.

We remove the door leaf from the hinges, lay it on a flat surface. You can - on the goats or the table. We take putty on wood (even if they are from or) and we cover all holes, chips and cavities with it. After drying, we proceed to the next stage - grinding.

We take sandpaper with a large grain and with a fine one. We process, achieving a flat surface. If you work manually, it takes a lot of time and effort. With a hand sander, work moves faster. If further painting is planned, we try to achieve the most even surface. If you plan to decorate with wallpaper, fabric, self-adhesive film, you can not bring it to the ideal, but it should be exactly the same.

Next, we remove the dust, wash off the remnants with water and diluted dishwashing detergent. We dry. The next steps depend on the selected update method. If you are going to glue fabric or wallpaper of any kind, you can prime the surface (liquid diluted glue or a special primer). After the primer dries, you can glue the selected type of decor or apply paint. By the way, if you are going to paint the doors, you need to select the paint of the same type that was before, otherwise you will have to remove everything to a clean base, and this is very difficult.

Update old doors with wallpaper

The easiest and most affordable way to make old doors look attractive is to use wallpaper. They do not have to be in the tone of the walls, although this option is not excluded. First, we prepare the canvas as described above, and then you can proceed to the finish.

The procedure for pasting doors with wallpaper is as follows:

Wall mural

Modern photo printing allows you to transfer three-dimensional images to paper. They turn out very nice. And you can print any image of your choice. Generally, any. Photo printing is usually done by advertising agencies, sometimes by printing houses. Contact there, explaining what you need (have a flash drive with the selected pattern and the exact dimensions of the canvas on which you want to print the image). Having received the required image, we glue it on the door according to the method. described above.

Wallpaper with moldings

If you stick foam or polyurethane moldings, sockets on plain wallpaper, the style will completely change. This type of door is suitable for classic interiors or rooms; when using a colorful background and a different form of moldings (with roundings), you can decorate in the Provence style.

The work is no different from the sequence prescribed above. We take prepared doors with a leveled surface, spread with glue, glue wallpaper.

Leveling the panels with a rubber roller is not difficult to achieve good results, but some small air bubbles remain. To remove them, they take a special plastic spatula (they are available in any hardware store), and they finally remove the air from the center to the edges. Also, with this spatula, the joint of the wallpaper, if any, is ironed. It is quite possible to achieve that the joint will not be visible.

We cut the edges of the wallpaper with a wallpaper knife. This must be done until the wallpaper is softened from the glue, otherwise then they can “reach out” for the blade and tear. We leave to dry. After 12 hours or a day - depending on the temperature and humidity in the room - you can continue decorating the old door.

Carefully, with a simple pencil, mark up. When everything is drawn, with a tape measure we measure the required length of the molding pieces. Cut off, cut the edges at an angle of 45 °. We take a suitable glue (you can use PVA) and carefully spread the back surface of the cut off elements, glue them according to the markings, leave to dry.

By the same principle, you can update old doors so that the style will be different. Some examples in the photo gallery.

Beautiful tone-on-tone wallpaper is the secret to the appeal of this door decor
Moldings were glued to the painted doors, which were then painted with “golden” paint.

Designer decoration of old doors

If you are interested in designer things, you can try to turn it into an art object. The good news is that you do not need to cook it: bumps and sagging will hide under the design.

The decoration process begins with the manufacture of papier-mâché. Take egg trays, sprinkle with water, knead with your fist, trying to level the surface. In the process, they will tear, this is normal and even good - we need small pieces. These almost flat fragments, on liquid nails or with a glue gun, are glued to the surface in random order.

Lids, rings, a small perfume bottle, a small non-working computer mouse, the remains of a mosaic, everything that comes to hand are used. There will be a lot of trash, you can collect ahead of time.

When most of the surface is “decorated”, we take acrylic silver paint in spray cans (2 pieces are needed) and paint over the decor well. When choosing a paint, it is better to take an expensive one, in particular German, so that it does not crumble later.

Decorating doors using decoupage technique

Romantic or "cheerful" door design can be done using decoupage. For work you will need:

  • napkins with a suitable pattern;
  • PVA glue (about 200 ml);
  • natural bristle brush;
  • acrylic lacquer.

We prepare the canvas, as described earlier. We prime and paint in the appropriate color. After the paint has dried, we start decorating. We take a pack of napkins you like, separate the top layer, which is with a pattern.

Tear napkins with a pattern lengthwise into three strips. We tear, we do not cut. We need a slightly uneven edge. Two strips on one side get a smooth edge, put them aside in one direction. The middle part is torn into squares. The best option is if they are with a side of 3-4 cm.

We take glue, a brush, a small container. In it we mix PVA with water in equal proportions.

Next, we proceed to decorate the door with our own hands. We take a strip with a smooth edge, apply it to the area to be decorated (in this case, this is the center of the door leaf). We dip the brush in glue, we begin to smooth the fragment in different directions. Creases form, but this is just not bad - a more textured finish will turn out, so there is no need to align them especially. Napkins when wet are very delicate and elastic, remember this when working, act carefully.

Gradually we make a frame with one even edge. The second is carelessly torn.

Filling the middle of the "frame"

When the entire surface is filled, we leave it for a day - we wait until the PVA dries. Next, take acrylic varnish and cover our decor with a soft brush. So that it does not smell, we take a water-based varnish. It's a little more expensive, but it doesn't hurt your head.

The beauty of decoupage is that at a meager cost we get beautiful things.

Door decoration with self-adhesive film

Perhaps the easiest way is to update old doors with self-adhesives. All you need:

  • the film itself
  • a spray bottle containing soap and water;
  • plastic spatula or soft cloth;
  • sharp knife (you can wallpaper).

This film is available in different versions - there is a monochromatic matte or glossy, there is a monochromatic one with holographic patterns, under a tree, there are even special doors for pasting with applied photo printing.

Regardless of the type of film, it is glued in the same way. In this case, we decided to update the old doors using the photo printing option. One moment: before gluing, we remove handles, latches and other door fittings.

For the decor to be of high quality, the surface of the door must be clean, even and smooth. If you processed it before this grinder, try gluing a small piece of film. If it sticks well, everything is fine. If it “does not stick”, you will have to prime the doors, and then paint or varnish them to create a smooth surface.

We take a spray bottle and evenly wet the surface of the door.

We shave the film, remove the protective layer from one of the corners, and also spray it. So, wetting, we separate the protective paper from the upper part along the entire width of the film.

You should get a strip 15-20 cm wide. Do not remove any more so that the film does not stick to the canvas. We apply the peeled off part to the upper edge of the door leaf (or the area to be decorated), it quickly sticks. Try to immediately apply evenly, but the situation can be corrected - for this we wetted the surface so that the film could be moved. If you pull it, it moves a little.

After making sure that the canvas lay flat, we take a plastic spatula (for wallpaper) and smooth the surface with it, moving from the center to the edges. The goal is to remove all the air. Since the surface is wet, this is not difficult - water displaces air.

Further, everything is simple. We pull down the protective paper, peeling off the strip, glue it and so on - to the very bottom of the door. If you glued the upper part for a long time, the lower part may dry out, so periodically check if the doors are dry, spray again if necessary.

After the entire film is glued, cut off the excess along the edges with a sharp knife. All that remains after that is to install the fittings.

Door decor with stencils

Old doors can be updated with applied drawings. The only pity is that not everyone has artistic talents. But in this case, the problem is solved with the help of stencils. You can draw them yourself, or you can find the image you like, print it on thick paper, cut out the pattern with a sharp knife, leaving jumpers in places. Here is the finished stencil.

The disadvantage of a paper stencil is that it does not last long. If you need a "long-playing" transfer it must be on a transparent thick film. In more detail, the stencil cutting technology for door decor is shown in the video.

The drawing can be anything. Both geometric and floral, stylized images of animals, birds, cartoon characters are popular.

Do-it-yourself door decoupage

Do-it-yourself door decoupage

Do-it-yourself step-by-step instructions for decoupage doors with a description

Using photo wallpaper for later work for beginners

You can stick a photo wallpaper that is designed specifically for doors (as shown in the photo). Of course, this option will not be very cheap, but it will please the eye with landscapes, exotic flowers, wild animals or children's drawings. You can also make a redesign of an interior door in a budget form with napkins or ordinary wallpaper. There are several nuances for decorating photo wallpapers: doors should be of a standard size, and after a long operation, the brightness of the wallpaper changes. At home, doors can be decorated with vinyl and paper wallpaper.

We decorate double-sided doors with fabric

When decoupage double doors, it is recommended to follow the pattern on the wallpaper. You can put plywood on glass doors and use it as a basis for gluing. The remaining surfaces free from wallpaper can be covered with paint. It is better to observe the contrast of colors for a more effective result.

You can complement the interior using original design techniques.: cracks, scuffs, gold and silver lines.

Do-it-yourself door decoupage from napkins

  • the easiest way to decorate doors is to trim with molding;
  • traditional - sticking PVC film or wallpaper;

Interested in how to decorate the door with your own hands in a more original way? The door of a toilet or a built-in wardrobe can be very unusually finished using decoupage cards.

Do-it-yourself door decoupage - decoupage of old doors with napkins and wallpaper

How sometimes you want to bring something new into the familiar and already sometimes boring atmosphere of your own apartment. So that, on the one hand, it would be unusual, beautiful and elegant, and on the other hand, this change would not require large financial and physical costs.

It seems that it is not yet required to make a full-fledged repair, but it would be nice to update some interior details, for example, an old, plain interior door. Trite to repaint it in a different color? Then she will stand out from the whole ensemble. Make some decorative inserts in it? Too laborious. But the decoupage of the door in this case is perfect. And you can do it quite quickly and pick up such a pattern that you won’t have to re-paste the wallpaper and change the suspended ceilings.

What is decoupage

Decoupage

It should immediately be noted that decoupage is not a repair, although it still carries protective properties for the door. Decoupage of doors is the application of carved drawings, patterns and applications on them, followed by varnishing, which makes the surface of the door more resistant to damage. But the main purpose of this not new technique is to make the selected surface more beautiful.

The flight of your imagination here is completely unlimited. You can make a window into another world out of the door, build a flower bed on it, or amaze friends and acquaintances with an unusual landscape. The main rule is to observe the general interior of the room so that the door does not become a pretentious spot and does not hurt the eye with its inappropriateness.

Decoupage doors with wallpaper

Do-it-yourself door decoupage may differ only in the materials used for this purpose. Otherwise, the technique and sequence of actions are very similar. We will start our master class with the simplest and most accessible way. Surely you still have wallpaper from the last repair. At least half a roll. This is enough to completely change one side of the door. First, the drawing will match. Second, you don't need to buy anything. Is it wallpaper glue, which can be successfully replaced with PVA.

  • The surface of the door must be put in order. Remove peeling paint, wash thoroughly with detergents and degrease.
  • Cut out the drawings you like from the wallpaper and compose a composition from them.
  • Stick these pictures on the door.
  • Can be varnished.

As you can see, there is nothing particularly complicated and cannot be. The main thing is that the patterns are not scattered randomly, but form a kind of symmetrical composition. Although chaos in contemporary art is highly welcome.

Decoupage of doors with napkins

Decoupage of doors with napkins

This method is similar to the previous one, but somewhat more time consuming. This is due to the fact that ordinary colored napkins have a less dense structure. So:

  • The door surface and this time must be thoroughly washed and dried.
  • Close the area around the work area so as not to stain the walls and floor with paint.
  • Prime.
  • Paint the door with white acrylic paint and let dry.
  • Then paint with a color that will successfully harmonize with the pattern of the selected napkins.
  • Pictures cut out of napkins are attached very carefully and smoothed with a brush from the center to the edges.
  • After the surface has dried, the edges of the drawings must be treated with putty and then walked with a fine sandpaper.
  • At the final and fixing stage, the entire surface is covered with a high-quality transparent varnish.

Here, as you can see, you have to tinker a bit and be careful. However, the result will amaze not only your friends, but yourself too.

Decoupage glass on the door

Decoupage glass doors

We have to admit that the statement that decoupage of the door with wallpaper - the easiest - was not true. It is much easier and faster to stick a pattern on the glass parts of the door if they are the right size. Firstly, in the store you can find a special double-sided film designed just for this purpose. But if you don’t want to spend on searching, or a good interesting drawing caught your eye, then there is no doubt.

The main thing is that the picture is on both sides. Just carefully stick it on the glass part of the door and smooth it so that there are no bubbles left. The new decor is ready.

Decoupage of old doors with cloth

Decoupage of doors with cloth

Not a bad option for decoupage old doors with fabric. Moreover, it is possible to cover not the entire surface, but only some part of it, which will look both unusual and exquisite. This is not suitable for every style, but if you decide to resort to this method, you must proceed as follows:

  • Rinse well and dry the surface of the door or that part of it where you are going to stick the selected fabric.
  • Apply a fairly thick layer of glue.
  • Gently apply the fabric and smooth it thoroughly, making sure that there are no bubbles or wrinkles left.
  • Apply two or three more layers of transparent glue on top.
  • The final stage is the same as in almost all the methods described above - applying a special protective varnish.

Once again, it is worth mentioning the most important nuance, which is very relevant just in time for this type of blend of old interior doors. A new door, or that part of it that has undergone processing, should not be an inappropriate spot in the overall style of the interior. So when choosing fabrics, patterns and photo wallpapers that are also suitable for this technique, you should imagine in advance how it will look. And if the dissonance is too obvious, it is worth either abandoning this type of work, or looking for some other drawing.

Decoupage of doors with photo wallpaper

By the way, about photowall-paper. There are special options designed specifically for this purpose. It must be admitted that they are not quite cheap, but the financial costs will more than pay off with the sophistication and unusual appearance of the door, on which real works of art will suddenly appear. The choice is so large that in the store you can get confused. You may want to see a piece of warm summer landscape in your room. Or a dynamic gallop of graceful horses with beautifully fluttering manes. Or maybe a mysterious lunar landscape. Or a collage of children's drawings. The choice is only yours. But we must remember the three nuances of using photo wallpaper for decoupage of doors or some other surfaces.

  • You can use photo wallpaper for decoupage of doors only if you have doors of a standard size.
  • Before buying, you should decide which type of photo wallpaper will be easier for you to use. Paper or vinyl.
  • After some time, the brightness of the photo wallpapers may gradually decrease and they will have to be changed. This is not a problem, but rather a new opportunity.

That, perhaps, is all that can be said on this topical and interesting issue. You will notice some nuances and successfully implement them yourself. Some to be decided together with the acquired experience. We tried to explain as clearly as possible what decoupage of old doors is, how to do it, and what should be taken into account. We hope that we managed not only to tell you how simple it is, but also to push you to real creativity. Indeed, even an old, peeling surface can be turned, if not into a real work of art, then make it such that at one glance at it, joyful notes arise in the soul and the mood rises.

This technique involves drawing a pattern on a decorated surface. It can be paper or fabric based. The following types can be used as decoupage material.

In principle, you can use newspaper for decoupage. But why go to extremes if the modern market for creative materials offers a wide range of quality consumables?

How to decoupage a door with your own hands: a description of the process

The decoupage process itself is not difficult. But still, there are some nuances. We will talk further about how to prepare the surface and apply the drawing, fixing it for reliability with special means.

First of all, I need to say a few words about how to use pictures and arrange them in space.

  • You can decorate the entire surface of the door with napkins, leaving no free space on the door leaf.
  • The second option involves the island arrangement of the decor (peculiar islands on a plain surface).
  • And the third option is possible with a dotted pattern, when you need to mask some kind of flaw (for example, a chip or pothole).

When you have drawn in your imagination the future picture of the decor, you can get to work. Do-it-yourself door decoupage is an interesting and creative process, to which even children can be attached. Let's take a wooden door as a basis for decoupage.

The process of decoupage of doors is quite easy and interesting, with the exception of the preparatory and final stages, which are not very loved by the craftsmen. But these processes are inevitable, and the result of the work depends entirely on them. Another nuance you need to control is gluing the picture. Surely this will cause air bubbles under the picture, they all need to be expelled. To do this, working with a brush, move from the center to the edges of the picture.

Do-it-yourself decoupage of doors with napkins, wallpaper

An important detail of the modern interior of the apartment is interior doors. In order to revive the interior, you can use the decoupage technique. Do-it-yourself decoupage of doors is possible not only for professionals, but also for beginners.

Advantages of decoupage technique

The main advantages of decoupage technique are:

  • The ability to hide door defects.
  • Simplicity of technique and expressiveness of execution.
  • Cheapness.
  • The ability to create original stories.

Description of work

Decoupage technique can be performed using the following elements:

  • Decoupage doors with napkins;
  • Decoupage of the door with various clippings from newspapers, magazines, etc.
  • Decoupage doors wallpaper.

The decoupage technique consists of several successive stages. Let's list them:

  • Door surface finish. The surface of the interior door must be thoroughly cleaned of dirt. You can wash the surface with soapy water. After washing, you must wait until the surface is completely dry.
  • With the help of paper tape, we mark the place where the work will be done. We stick paper tape on the rest of the surface of the door.
  • Primer. For priming the decoupage place, choose a beige primer. Carefully prime the door. Let the primer dry (usually takes about three to four hours).
  • Surface treatment with wax or paraffin. Gently rub the primed surface with beeswax or paraffin.

  • Coloring. In the process of dyeing, acrylic paints are used (aerosol acrylic paints can be used) of two colors: white and background (we select the background color depending on the intended decoupage composition). We cover the surface of the door with white acrylic paint and let it dry completely. Then carefully apply the acrylic paint of the main color. Also let the paint dry. (Figure 2).

  • Do-it-yourself decoupage of interior doors can be done using special decoupage napkins, as well as using other materials (wallpaper, clippings, photographs, etc.). using glue, it is necessary to glue the decoupage motif on the door (Figure 3).

To do this, use a thin paint brush. Air bubbles are expelled with a sponge from under the surface of the decoupage motif in the direction from the center to the edges. Use a foam sponge for this - do not rub the image with your hands. Using an acrylic contour, process the uneven edges of the decoupage image (Figure 4).
