The fan speed has also been reduced, which, coupled with the reduced power consumption of the Sony PS3 Slim component, has resulted in a significant reduction in low- and mid-frequency noise in the console. The only thing the designers can be reproached with is the use of a 120 GB Toshiba hard drive, which emits a fairly well-distinguished high-frequency whistle during operation. Which, however, is practically indistinguishable by ear when the volume of the speakers of the stereo system (or TV) is set to -40 dB and higher.

The changes also affected the functional component of the console. As in the PS3, the Sony PS3 Slim motherboard has two chips - an 8-core Cell (jointly developed by Sony, Toshiba and IBM) and RSX from nVidia. Initially, Cell is able to process graphics, it does it more than well - one of the 8 cores is dedicated specifically for graphic operations, one for the operation of the operating system, another core is responsible for sound, the remaining five are for other operations. Game developers have direct access to these five cores of the Cell processor. In PS3Slim, the Cell graphics core was blocked, and all the burden of graphics processing fell on the nVidia RSX (Reality Synthesizer or "Reality Synthesizer"). The main reason for this GPU in the PS3 and PS3 Slim is the RSX's ability to support resolutions up to 1920 x 1080p (Full HD), while the Cell's graphics core is capable of displaying "standard" NTSC/PAL (480i/575i) interlaced scan modes. Accordingly, due to the presence of two processors on the board (recall that Cell is based on the PPE architecture - PowerPC Power Processing Element), the total amount of PS3 Slim memory (512MB) is divided in half - 256MB of XDR memory is allocated for the needs of Cell, and 256MB of DDR3 memory is allocated for the needs of the nVidia RSX.

As promised in my blog, today I will prepare and publish a photo review of the latest revision of the Sony PlayStation 3, according to NATO classification “super slim”, in the maximum configuration with a 500 gigabyte hard drive.

As usual, in my review there will be a minimum of technical characteristics (which means there won’t be any), which you yourself can read about on the Internet, and a maximum of high-quality photos and descriptions of personal feelings from using the thinnest “bread box”. Also, in this article I will describe the disassembly of the PS3 Slim (more precisely, the procedure for removing the hard drive).

Well then, let's go!

Appearance

Let's start with a top view.

Nice glossy plastic along the edges is slightly spoiled by horizontal guide grooves that reduce solidity.

At the ends of the plastic is more "budget", matte.

Agree, with a vertical installation, the grooves look much prettier.

You and I are already used to the fact that the PS logo has stopped rotating since the days of the regular PS3 slim. By the way, in this perspective, Sonya resembles a futuristic stealth design.

The rear panel has a set of connectors already familiar to the sophisticated user.

On the bottom there is a sticker of the manufacturer,

from which it can be seen that the console received the model number CECH-400 ... and made in China.

Air intake holes are located along the edge of the stand.

They are small because the power consumption and heat dissipation of the console is also small.

And now about the most interesting - about the drive.

It opens like this - we take the console.

We press the mechanical (horror!) button to the left of the logo.

It has been noticed: when installed horizontally, the lid rumbles terribly and moves away sharply, when installed vertically - smoothly and almost silently. Paradox.

… there are two lenses in the drive head! One on DVD and one on Blu-ray. And this means that owners of PS3 super slim can forget about problems with the drive. By the way, replacing a disc on a PS3 is quick and easy.

The lid closes manually until it clicks.

Not very convenient, as well as the fact that the PS3 menu now lacks the “eject disc” function, since the process has become completely mechanized.

The fan noise level is slightly higher than that of the conventional slim, the drive noise level is slightly lower than that of the conventional slim.

Heat dissipation is extremely low. This allows us to hope that the user will never see YLOD .

But what really annoys is the manual change / installation of the disk.

The problem is that even with a fixed stand, this operation has to be carried out extremely carefully and with two hands.

It is especially difficult to adapt after switching from the usual Slim, and even more difficult from the almost silent drive transfer mechanism to FAT. I wouldn’t be surprised if you drop a phrase like “What’s that! Fuck!"

PS3 super slim turned out to be a very good console with a reasonable balance of cost reduction and technical progress, however, not without certain extremes on the part of Sony manufacturers.

Cheap plastic, manual disk change, and controversial design border on two lasers in the drive, a 500GB hard drive, and a cool aluminum vertical stand.

If this is the first time you want to immerse yourself in the amazing world of PlayStation 3, I recommend starting this action with Super Slim. The transition from PS2 slim will be especially smooth, because consoles are similar in some ways.
