Meadowsweet planting and care in the open field. Watering and loosening the soil

simple looking herbaceous perennial meadowsweet is a highly ornamental garden flower.
Meadowsweet or meadowsweet is a garden crop widely used in landscape design. Valued for extraordinary beautiful view, long flowering, unpretentious disposition. When describing the meadowsweet, special attention is paid to the amazing carved leaf shape, airy, weightless, fragrant inflorescence. This simple plant is in no way inferior and will easily compete with other ornamental garden plantings. It has great importance meadowsweet in folk medicine due to the presence of a large number of active substances. It is widely used in the treatment of various diseases, in addition, the leaves and shoots of the meadowsweet are eaten, and the flowers are used for making tea.

Meadowsweet is a perennial herbaceous plant, a representative of the genus Meadowsweet, subfamily Pink or wild rose, Rosaceae or Rose family. The genus unites more than 15 species, four of which (elm-leaved, six-petal, Kamchatka, palmate) are medicinal herb and are often used in folk medicine. The plant has wide use and forms continuous thickets in the territory of temperate climate zone In the northern hemisphere, the meadowsweet prefers to grow among herbs and bushes in waterlogged places, damp and swampy meadows, along the banks of rivers and lakes. In central Russia, two species are most common - the elm-leaved and common meadowsweet.

The name of the plant comes from the Latin language and is formed from the words "filum" - a thread and "pendulus" - hanging, hanging. This is due to the peculiarity of the rhizome of the plant, in which the root nodules hang on thin roots.

The meadowsweet plant and its other name in Latin, Filipendula, has been found in literature since the 12th century.
The stems of the meadowsweet (meadowsweet) are strong, erect, dense, leafy, growing, forming loose bushes. The height of the meadowsweet varies from 30 cm to 2 m, depending on the species.

The leaves are large (up to 30 cm long), mostly concentrated in the lower basal region of the stem. Large sheet plates pinnate, palmate. Pairs of serrated, palmate-lobed large leaves alternate with small lateral ones. Stem leaves are smaller.

The flowers of the meadowsweet are numerous, small (5-8 mm in diameter), bisexual, collected in apical corymbose-paniculate inflorescences. Petals 4, 5 or 6 pieces, they are small, rounded, white, pink, beige or red, about 20-40 stamens. The flowers of the meadowsweet are fragrant, they are excellent honey plants. Flowering period June-July.

The fruit is a capitate multi-nutlet or multi-leaflet, consisting of 8-15 sickle-shaped, spirally twisted nuts or leaflets, naked or ciliated, ripens in August.

Species and varieties

Perennial has been used in horticulture since the 18th century. In ornamental gardening, 8 species are grown, which have varying degrees of popularity. For medicinal purposes, the leaves, rhizome and flowers of the meadowsweet of only four species are used - elmous, six-petal, Kamchatka and palmate. The most common meadowsweet is variegated or elmous. Many species and varieties of meadowsweet are actively used in the design of garden plots.

elegans

Compact perennial herbaceous plant 50-100 cm high with graceful green deeply palmately incised leaves and paniculate dense inflorescences formed by purple-pink small flowers. The flowering period of the meadowsweet elegans is June-August.

Umbrella

The variety is very beautiful and is not only decorative flowering, but also decorative deciduous. Plant height 70-80 cm, bush diameter 50 cm. Leafy light green plates of the Umbrella meadowsweet variety have a palmate shape with a serrated edge. A distinctive feature of the variety is the dark brown or purple color of the veins and the central part of the leaf. small pink flowers collected in loose tall panicles. Flowering period July-September. The plant is decorative all season.

Pink

Decorative flowering garden form of pink meadowsweet does not belong to a particular species. It is rarely used in culture, most likely of hybrid origin with one of the rosaceous species of meadowsweet. Flowers gently color pink.

Venusta

Red meadowsweet variety. A bush up to 1.7 m high, the flowers of the meadowsweet Venusta are creamy pink or pink-red, collected in dense fluffy inflorescences at the ends of the stems. The rhizome is short, the stems are numerous, hard, the leaves are pinnate, with large serrated lobes. Flowering period July-August, duration up to 6 weeks.

Magnifica

It is a variety of red meadowsweet. Magnifica flowers are dark pink, formed in apical large dense inflorescences. The bush grows up to 1.7 m, the stems are strong, branching, the leaves are green, with large jagged segments. Flowering period July-August, duration up to 45 days.

Vyazolistny variegated

Plant height 1-1.7 m. Forms dense thickets. The leaves are large, pinnately dissected, with a three- or five-lobed share, dark green with yellow spots and strokes, the lower part is lighter, exude a pleasant aroma. The stems are straight, strong, with a red-brown color. Thick (finger-thick), branching, horizontal rhizomes, with numerous buds, from which flower-bearing shoots grow in summer, subsequently forming dense thickets.

The flowers of the variegated meadowsweet are small, white or beige, five-petalled, with long stamens, honey aroma. Flowering time June-July, duration 20-25 days. Inflorescences 15-20 cm long, paniculate, dense, lush. It retains its decorative appearance only during flowering, and during the fruiting period it acquires a dark color. Another name for the elm-leaved meadowsweet is whitehead, white grass, magpie, meadowsweet, meadowsweet, meadowsweet, honeydew, marsh honeydew, wet raspberry.

Kamchatsky

The distribution area in nature is Sakhalin, the Kuril Islands, northern Japan, Kamchatka. One of the tall species of meadowsweet up to 1.2-3m high. The rhizome is powerful, thick. Strong, ribbed, pubescent, reddish, erect stems up to 2.5 cm in diameter. Basal leaves are large, up to 30 cm long and up to 40 cm wide, broadly reniform, pinnate, with shallowly palmate terminal lobes of leaves. Top part leaves are smooth, green, glossy, the lower part is felt-hairy. Stem leaves are smaller, at the top of the stem the leaves are three-lobed or entire.

The flowers are about 0.8 cm in diameter, fragrant, white or cream, red in buds, collected in loose large corymbs. Meadowsweet Kamchatka blooms in July-August. At the end of flowering, panicles of inflorescences acquire a fluffy appearance due to numerous oblong, densely ciliated along the edge, fruits that ripen in August. Another name is a shelomaynik.

Purple

It is a hybrid plant, distributed in Japan, Northeast China, Korea. Recently, it is often used in ornamental horticulture in other countries. Highly ornamental variety. Plant 50-100 cm high, with green leaves, deeply palmately incised into 5-7 ovate-lanceolate sharp segments, with underdeveloped lateral processes. Basal leaves are large, more numerous than small stem leaves. Purple meadowsweet blooms with small purple or dark pink flowers collected in paniculate inflorescences. The fruits, in most cases, are underdeveloped, clearly visible on the petioles, ciliated along the edge.

Garden form of purple meadowsweet - elegans. This is a variety with pale white flowers and bright red stamens. Flowering period from late June to August, for 25-30 days.

Red Venusta

Perennial tall herbaceous plant that forms large groups. The height of the stem reaches 1.5-2.5 m, the leaves are large, green, pinnate. Small pink or light pink flowers form dense large paniculate inflorescences, after flowering beautiful crimson fruits appear. The meadowsweet red Venusta blooms in July-August for 4-6 weeks. Prefers open light areas, grows well under the canopy of tall trees and shrubs. With strong shading, it may stop blooming.

palmate

Highly ornamental variety, cultivated since 1823. Forms continuous single-species thickets. The palm-shaped meadowsweet got its name because of the large palmate leaves, which in their shape resemble the palm of a hand. From below, the leaves are covered with gray dense felt pubescence.

The height of the plant is not more than 1 m. The rhizome, unlike other types of meadowsweet, goes much deeper into the ground. The perennial is distinguished by dense inflorescences up to 25 cm long, filled with many small white or pale pink flowers. When flowering, they turn white. Up to 8 panicles with flowers are formed on one bush. Flowering occurs in June-July for 25-30 days, the flowers have a delicate honey aroma.

Widespread in the natural environment - in the Far East, Eastern Siberia, China, Mongolia, Japan. Grows in forest meadows and shrubs.

six-petalled

Perennial herbaceous plant 30-70 cm high. The shortest type of meadowsweet. Another name for the common meadowsweet. It is most often found in garden plots. Widely distributed in the forest-steppe, fields, along river valleys, on the edges and clearings, among shrubs. The six-petaled meadowsweet is valuable with a thin cord-like rhizome with tuberous dark thickenings of an oval-oblong shape. The stem in the upper part is simple, erect, slightly branched.

At the base of the stem in a basal rosette, the stem is discontinuously pinnate, consisting of numerous elongated, deeply incised, serrated or pinnately dissected leaflets, between which leaflets of smaller sizes are placed. A few more small leaves covering the stem, with semi-serrated stipules.

The flowers of the meadowsweet are six-petalled in diameter up to 1 cm, delicate white-pink or white color, with petals obovate, collected in multi-flowered panicles up to 15 cm long. Flowering period June-July. The fruits consist of 9-12 hairy, tightly pressed seeds that ripen in July-August.

In folk medicine, only rhizomes with tuberous thickenings are used, since they contain gaulterin glycoside, tannins, starch, vitamin C. Raw materials are harvested in autumn (September, October), or in early spring(April), before the start of growth. They dig up the six-petaled meadowsweet with a shovel, cut the tubers and wash them in cold water. The roots are dried in cool, well-ventilated areas on a flat, even surface. Stored in paper bags or linen bags, shelf life is 3 years. The taste of dried raw materials is bitter-tart. Used as a diaphoretic, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, astringent.

Infusion and decoction based on herbs are used to normalize the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract, with inflammation of the kidneys and bladder, and damage to the skin.

Meadowsweet ordinary captivity is one of the garden forms of the six-petaled meadowsweet with fragrant terry white inflorescences. The height of the bush is up to 1.5 m, the stems are bare at the base, which is why the plants are used mainly in the background of the flower garden. Due to large terry panicles, dense thickets during the flowering period take on the appearance of a “snow cap”.

plant care

Decorative meadowsweet is a moisture-loving plant that requires regular watering, the soil around the bush must be kept moist. Because of this feature, the plant is planted in lowlands, around artificial reservoirs, and regular watering is provided. Kamchatka, red, elm-leaved and steppe are very moisture-loving varieties of meadowsweet. With prolonged high air temperature and hot weather in summer, wilting of leaves and bud drop can be observed. This is due to dry soil. The problem is solved by watering, literally after a while the plant comes to life.

As top dressing, organic and mineral fertilizers are used, which are applied to the soil 1-2 times during the vegetative period.

The plant is not demanding on top dressing, their absence will practically not affect the appearance of the bush.

It is not difficult at all to take care of the meadowsweet, maintaining the good condition of the bush consists not only in watering, but also in the periodic destruction of weeds, loosening.

At the end of August and September, after the flowering period, the bush loses its decorative appearance, so it is cut off, leaving 5-10 cm. Shelter for the cold season is not required, meadowsweet is a fairly winter-hardy plant.
After planting the meadowsweet, caring for new plants is to create comfortable conditions for good growth and development. In the early days, wood ash or lime is added, props are installed, otherwise, when growing, the stems may not support the weight of the flowers, break or lie on the ground. Water the plant regularly, the soil around the plant should be constantly wet. An exception to the rule is the common meadowsweet, it is drought-resistant, prefers dry, light soils, and does not need regular watering.

Diseases and pests

From insect pests attacks the plant wireworm and aphids. As a result of the impact on the aphid plant, the leaves are deformed, dry out, the growth of the plant slows down, this is due to the fact that the pest feeds cell sap plants. Due to aphids, the decorative properties of the plant deteriorate, since the flowers, not having time to open, immediately fall off. The common meadowsweet is the only species that can withstand the effects of a pest. A strong soapy solution can help get rid of aphids.

The rhizome can be damaged by wireworms, more precisely, the larvae of the click beetle. Pest control consists in liming the soil.

The fight against insect pests consists in treating the green mass of the bush with insecticides. Suitable: Actellik, Aktara, Fitoverm, Agravertin.

Meadowsweet gets sick only when the conditions of cultivation and maintenance are violated. In most cases, the plant is found powdery mildew and rust. With a rust disease, brown, brown spots appear on the leaves, fungal disease affects mainly basal leaves. As a fight against the disease, spraying the entire bush with a solution of copper sulfate and lime is used. Fungicide preparations are also used: Topaz, Horus, Kuproksat. Repeated spraying is carried out not earlier than after 7-10 days, repeated until the disease is completely eliminated. Most often, the disease manifests itself in the meadowsweet. common view is not subject to it.

In most cases, Korean, Kamchatka and six-petal meadowsweet are vulnerable to powdery mildew. In the middle of summer, plants infected with a fungal infection have a bluish-white loose coating on the leaves. The disease begins at the base of the stem, gradually “moves” upward, affecting the leaves of the stem, apical leaves and inflorescences. As a struggle, the bush is sprayed with a solution of colloidal sulfur or soda ash. Infected parts of the bush are cut and burned.

Planting and reproduction

Even inexperienced gardeners will not have problems with planting and caring for the meadowsweet. The plant prefers open sunny glades, but will also grow actively in partial shade. In more shady indoor areas, the decorative appearance may suffer: flowering will be less lush and bright, or the bush will stop flowering altogether.
Any loose, fertilized, moist soil with a good ability to drain excess water is suitable for growing meadowsweet, since the bush does not like excess moisture in the soil. Slightly acidic and neutral soils are well suited, acidic soil is not suitable for a bush.

Meadowsweet reproduces by dividing the bush and seeds.

Reproduction of the meadowsweet

Vegetative propagation, that is, dividing the bush, is suitable for all types of meadowsweet. It is produced in autumn. For this, an adult healthy bush is chosen, which, after moistening the soil, is dug up and the rhizome is cut into pieces 5-10 cm long. They are planted immediately in the soil, making holes 5-10 cm deep, or stored in the refrigerator, buried in wet sand, sawdust or wrapped in damp cloth.

Common meadowsweet is propagated, in addition to rhizome segments, by root tubers, however, when propagated by tubers in the first year of planting, the plant does not bloom. For division choose bushes not younger than five years of age.

At seed propagation seeds are sown directly in the ground or on seedlings. Most often, when breeding meadowsweet, preference is given to the seed method. In the fall, only well-ripened seeds are harvested, which are easily broken off from the receptacle. Sow seeds in the ground immediately after harvest or you can wait until spring. To preserve the germination of seeds, they are stored in a cool place, but in this case, the percentage of germination of seeds sown in autumn is much higher than with spring planting. It is necessary to plant the seeds of the meadowsweet in the ground 1.5-2 cm deep. Seeds planted in autumn germinate better. Since the seed coat is quite hard, before sowing, they are poured for a day with water or treated with a growth stimulator. Seedlings appear in late April-early May, for better growth and development, young shoots in the second half of May are fed with liquid mineral fertilizers.

Sowing seeds in the spring (end of March) is carried out in seedling containers. Sow seeds in grooves or evenly scatter on the surface of the soil, without sprinkling. Then they cover the boxes with a transparent lid (glass, polyethylene), put in a shaded place. Shoots appear in April, at which point the cover is removed. At the end of June, the grown sprouts are transplanted into moist soil on permanent place in the garden. The first 7-10 days, young plants need daily watering, after moistening the soil, they produce as the soil dries. Care for young shoots consists in timely loosening, weeding and top dressing with complex mineral fertilizers twice (in June and July) in the first year of planting. Subject to simple rules for the care of seedlings, the survival rate of seedlings is 90-100%. With seedling propagation, flowering occurs in the second year after planting. Seeds planted in autumn are covered for the winter, as young plants may die in the cold season.

Application in landscape design

Meadowsweet in the garden is often used in single and group plantings. The use of meadowsweet in combination with other decorative garden plants gives the flower garden the effect of airiness and foggy haze. Highly bright flowers diluted with delicate “cloudy” inflorescences of white and pink meadowsweet.
Tall varieties are used as hedges along the fence or around the perimeter of the house.

Meadowsweet Kamchatka, common, purple, other species and varieties are actively used in landscape design in the design of flower beds, borders, mixborders.

Among garden plantations, the meadowsweet goes well with lilies, ferns, astilbes, hydrangeas, marigolds, Siberian iris, carnations, peonies.

Meadowsweet looks great along the banks of artificial reservoirs. In addition to the beautiful, surprisingly airy appearance, the meadowsweet fills garden plot delicate honey aroma, serves as a valuable addition to the "green" gardener's first aid kit.

A beautiful well-groomed flower garden is the result of the gardener's hard work, as well as the flight of his imagination. After all, as you know, to create interesting compositions not so easy. Here, bright, perennial, unpretentious perennials come to the rescue. These include meadowsweet - a flower that is very popular in landscape design. Lush inflorescences make the surrounding space elegant, create a special mood in the flower garden, make the site bright, pleasing to the eye. In addition, this perennial plant does not cause much trouble to grow, which is especially appreciated by those who do not want to spend a lot of time and effort on gardening.

The meadowsweet grows in the temperate regions of the planet. In the European part of Russia, it is found everywhere in the wild. It prefers to grow on moist soils, therefore it settles mainly near water bodies.

The scientific name of the herb is Filipendula, which comes from the fusion of two words: "filum" - threads, "pendulus" - hanging down, hanging down. This name is due to the structural features of the plant's root system, which resembles hanging threads: small tubers are attached to thin thread-like roots.

What does a perennial meadowsweet look like (with photo)

According to its description, the meadowsweet (Filipendula) is a perennial herbaceous decorative flowering rhizome plant 1.5-2 m high. Its root system is characterized by rapid growth. Annual growth averages about 15 cm. There are specimens with roots reaching several tens of centimeters in length. Thanks to this feature of the roots, meadowsweet easily take root and fill all the free space around.

The stem is thin, hard, straight, on average up to 150 cm in length. In undersized species, it can reach 80 cm, in tall ones - about 2 m. The stem is completely covered with simple, alternately arranged leaves.

The leaf plates of the meadowsweet plant are dark green, palmately or pinnately dissected, collected in a rosette at the roots.

The perennial blooms with small fragrant, bisexual flowers, with 5-6 rounded petals. The flowers are collected in a loose panicle at the end of tall, erect, strong peduncles. Petals cream or pure white, some pink.

The main flowering occurs in July - August. The flowers are fragrant, their smell is favorable for humans, but in some people their pollen causes allergies.

After flowering, in place of the inflorescences, fruits are formed - multi-nutlets or multi-leaflets with a dense shell, consisting of one-seeded nuts. The fruits ripen in August.

The photo below shows how impressive the meadowsweet looks during the flowering period, how bright it looks in the garden and attracts attention:

Plants remain decorative all summer, until late autumn, thanks to their elegant greenery and inflorescences with fruits.

Characteristics of species and varieties of meadowsweet

Meadowsweet ordinary, or six-petal (Filipendula vulgaris).

Grows in meadows and forest clearings, often on crests of river floodplains and limestone outcrops (in the southern regions), along railway embankments.

In its own way botanical characteristics- This is a perennial short-rhizome plant with tuberous thickenings on the roots. The leaves in the basal rosette are numerous, odd-pinnate, intermittently dissected, coarsely dentate, with sparse hairs along the edge of the plate. Stems erect, ending in paniculate inflorescence. Stem leaves are similar to basal leaves, but smaller, with serrated stipules. In this species of meadowsweet, the flowers are six-dimensional and consist of six fused sepals (rarely pubescent on top), six free, white (rarely pale pink) petals, numerous stamens and nine to thirteen unfused, pubescent carpels. The fruit is a polynut. Nuts are hairy, sessile, oblong, Brown. Blooms in June - July. Fruits in July - August. Reproduction is seed and vegetative (with the help of nodules).

Common meadowsweet varieties:

"Grandiflora"- a bush up to 60 cm high. The flowers are large, with a corolla diameter of 1 cm. Cream-colored inflorescences;

"Captivity"- bush up to 50 cm high. Terry flowers, cream color;

"Flore Pleno"- a bush up to 40 cm high. The flowers are white, double.

The following photo shows the appearance of the "ordinary" meadowsweet and its varieties, where you can consider their characteristic features:

Elm-leaved meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria).

This type is one of the most popular among gardeners. In the wild, it grows along the banks of rivers, streams, in damp ravines, lowlands, and in wetlands.

The bushes are loose, sprawling, up to 150 cm high. The plant has beautiful pinnate leaves. The flowers are small, collected in panicles of white or yellow-white color, very fragrant. Flowering occurs in mid-June, lasts for a month. May re-bloom in August.

Varieties of meadowsweet vyazolistny:

"Rosea"- bush with bright pink flowers;

"Flore Pleno"- has snow-white terry inflorescences;

"Aurea"- a variety of meadowsweet up to 50 cm high with variegated leaves covered with spots and thin cream-colored strokes.

Kamchatka meadowsweet (Filipendula camtschatica).

This species is found only in Kamchatka, for which it got its name.

In its natural environment, it grows in large thickets. It is a bush up to 3 m high. The leaf plate reaches 30 cm in length. Inflorescences are white. Flowering from July to August.

Hand-shaped meadowsweet (Filipendula palmata).

Bush up to 2 m high, with long underground rhizomes.

As you can see in the photo above, the meadowsweet is a plant that has basal palm-shaped 3-5-lobed leaves attached to long petioles. The upper side of the leaf plate is smooth, dark green, the lower side is slightly lighter and slightly pubescent. Stem leaves are palmately divided. The inflorescence is a panicle about 25 cm long. The flowers are small, white.

Red meadowsweet (Filipendula rubra).

It's a pretty hardy look. It is a plant up to 2.5 m high, on the site it reaches no more than 1.5 m. The leaves are pinnate, oblong, dark green. Inflorescences are large red or red-pink. Flowering occurs in July and lasts until August. After flowering, raspberry-colored fruits form on the bush, so it gives the impression of continuous flowering of this crop. Due to this feature, this species retains its decorative effect for a long time.

Varieties of red meadowsweet have lush inflorescences of predominantly red, pink, crimson hues and look very expressive in the flower garden.

Varieties of red meadowsweet:

"Venusta"- has large bright red inflorescences;

"Magnifica"- variety with rich pink inflorescences;

"Pygmy" - dwarf variety, no more than 30 cm high, with pink flowers.

Purple meadowsweet (Filipendula purpurea).

A Japanese variety, rarely found in Russian gardens, as it is considered an exotic species, whimsical to the conditions of detention. It has purple inflorescences. Flowering occurs in July, lasts for a month.

Purple meadowsweet varieties:

"Elegance"- a variety with red flowers and peculiar outwardly stamens;

"Nana"- undersized variety with pink inflorescences.

Some varieties of purple meadowsweet are shown in the photo below, by looking at which you can make sure that they transform the garden and add a special charm to it:

Meadowsweet naked, or Korean (Filipendula glaberrima).

Perennial rhizomatous plant 0.5 - 1.5 m high. The flowers in buds are bright pink, when blooming they become snow-white.

The meadowsweet is multi-paired (Filipendula multijuga).

In the wild, the bush reaches up to 80 cm in height, in gardens no more than 50 cm. When describing the plant of the meadowsweet, it is worth noting that the species is distinguished by openwork pinnate cut dark green leaves. Flowers deep pink.

Western meadowsweet (Filipendula occidentalis).

Appearance about 1 m high. It has large, rounded, rugged leaves. The inflorescence is a dense panicle with large, up to 1.5 cm in diameter, white flowers.

Steppe meadowsweet (Filipendula stepposa).

This species is a sprawling bush up to 1 m high. The leaves are sharp-serrated, smooth, shiny from above, covered with white felt from below. Inflorescences dense, creamy. During the flowering period, the plant completely retains the basal rosette of leaves.

The description of the species of the meadowsweet plant is supplemented by a photo selection below, which will help you understand what each of them is:

Conditions for growing meadowsweet in the garden

Below are the conditions successful cultivation meadowsweet in the garden.

Location. The plant is photophilous, tolerates light partial shade. When choosing a site for a meadowsweet shrub, you should give preference to well-lit places on the south side of the garden, where the sun's rays will fall on it throughout the day. Possible slight shading or area with scattered sunlight. It is not recommended to grow a plant in the shade; its decorative effect will be lost from a lack of light. Given the characteristics of the meadowsweet, he will feel good near water bodies or in lowlands.

The soil. The soil prefers loose, light, nutritious, with a neutral reaction. With increased acidity of the soil, before planting the meadowsweet, you will need to add a little slaked lime, dolomite flour, chalk or ash. If the site has heavy clay soil, it should be diluted with river sand.

Watering. As already noted, this plant is moisture-loving, in nature it settles mainly near water bodies. This feature must be taken into account when caring for the meadowsweet, carrying out watering the bush. The soil should always be moist, but not waterlogged. Watering should be at least 1 time per week, and during dry periods 2-3 times a week. If you plant a bush in a lowland or near a reservoir, then the amount of watering will be reduced.

Loosening, mulching and other care. After watering, the soil is loosened, this ensures the supply of oxygen to the roots and improves the absorption of moisture. In addition, this work eliminates weeds. You need to loosen carefully, trying not to damage the thin roots located horizontally.

To make the bush look neat throughout the entire flowering period, faded inflorescences and wilted foliage are removed. This will not only preserve the decorativeness of the garden meadowsweet, but also direct its forces to the formation of new inflorescences.

Top dressing. For successful growth, development and abundant flowering of the plant, you need to regularly fertilize the bush. It is necessary to feed the flower every month from May to August, using organic and mineral fertilizers.

Winter hardiness. This culture is frost-resistant, so it does not require special shelter for the winter. In preparation for wintering, the aerial part of the bush is cut off at the root.

Pests and diseases of the meadowsweet

Most species and varieties of meadowsweet are not susceptible to diseases and pests. Sometimes a plant can infect aphids, as a result of which the leaves are deformed, dry out, and the growth of the plant itself slows down. The buds, not having time to open, fall off. This is due to the fact that harmful insects feed on the cell sap of the flower. You can get rid of aphids with soapy water, charcoal or insecticides.

If the gardener violates the rules for growing meadowsweet, does not properly care for it, the bush can be affected by a disease such as powdery mildew. The disease can be detected with the naked eye. A white coating appears on the plant, which first covers the stem, then the leaves of the plant, moving gradually upwards, reaching the inflorescences. When powdery mildew occurs, the bush is immediately treated with a solution of colloidal sulfur or fungicides. Cut off the affected parts and burn.

In some cases, the bush may be affected by rust. Signs of the disease are red or brown spots on root leaves. To eliminate the disease, the plant is sprayed with a solution of copper sulfate and lime. Fungicides are also effective in this case: "Topaz", "Strobi", "Titan" and others. Repeated spraying is carried out after 1 - 2 weeks. This procedure is repeated until the rust is completely eliminated.

Propagation of meadowsweet shrubs by seeds

Meadowsweet like many others garden perennials propagated by seeds, division of the bush and rhizome and cuttings. Each breeding method has its own advantages. For the successful implementation of this work, it is necessary to take into account the characteristics of the plant, follow all the stages, starting with the correct planting, ending with the care after it.

When growing meadowsweet from seeds, there is no guarantee that the plant will receive maternal and varietal characteristics. It can change the color of the inflorescences and foliage. However, many gardeners propagate the meadowsweet with seeds.

Before sowing, the seeds should be kept in a solution that stimulates the formation of roots, then stratified and dried well.

To stimulate root growth, the seeds are placed in warm water with the addition of Kornevin or another preparation, kept for 7 days, then dried and put back into a freshly prepared solution for a week. After root growth is stimulated, the seeds are stratified by placing them in small containers with peat and storing them in a refrigerator or in snow. Stratification should last until the end of February - beginning of March. After stratification, the seeds are sown immediately in open ground on a previously prepared site. The place for crops is shaded, since young plants are sensitive to the sun's rays. Seeds are buried in the soil by 5 cm, after which they are sprinkled with a small layer of earth. Sprouts appear unevenly, so some seedlings will appear in the same year, and others the next.

After the first pair of leaves appears in the sprouts, they swoop down to a permanent place and grow them, creating all the necessary conditions. The meadowsweet grown from seeds blooms for 3-4 years.

The following selection of photos shows planting meadowsweet seeds and caring for crops, so even a beginner can understand the intricacies of this work:

Growing seedlings of meadowsweet garden

You can grow seedlings of the meadowsweet at home and in the spring plant the grown bushes in open ground. Before planting seeds, they are stratified. Seeds are placed in a plastic bag with wet sand and stored in a cold place for 10-14 days.

Sowing is carried out from late February to early April. For planting, take small containers, for example, peat pots, plastic glasses. The soil should be loose, light and nutritious. Many gardeners for growing seedlings purchase a ready-made soil mixture.

Seeds are buried 1 cm and at a distance of about 6 cm from each other. Crops are sprayed from a spray bottle, covered with a film or glass and cleaned in a well-lit, warm place for germination. When the first shoots appear, the shelter is removed, the seedlings are placed on a window with diffused sunlight. For this, the western and eastern sides are suitable.

After planting the seeds of the meadowsweet, care for the crops should consist in watering, which is carried out as the earthen clod dries. The grown plants dive into separate containers of medium size. Two weeks before planting in open ground, they are hardened, leaving them on the street for several hours, daily increasing the time spent up to a day. Fortified bushes are planted on the site with the onset of warm days.

Reproduction of the meadowsweet by dividing the rhizome

This method of reproduction is simpler than seed and does not require much time. In addition, plants obtained by division get all the signs of the mother bush. The division of the meadowsweet should be carried out no more than 1 time in 5 years. Fulfill this work follows before the onset of flowering in early spring or after it in autumn period.

To divide the meadowsweet, you need to choose a large, healthy bush in the garden without any damage, water it abundantly and carefully dig it out, trying not to damage the roots. After that, carefully remove the earth from the roots by shaking it off or placing the plant in a container of water.

The meadowsweet bush should be divided into 3 - 4 parts with a sharp clean knife. Each division must have at least 2 points of growth. Cut points must be processed charcoal. Delenki immediately transplanted into open ground in previously prepared soil at a distance of 30 cm from each other. After planting the meadowsweet in open ground, care for young plants will be required, which will consist in abundant watering and loosening the soil around the bush.

Planting meadowsweet seedlings in the ground

Having decided to grow a meadowsweet in the garden, the gardener must choose the most suitable variety, adapted to the climate of the region where it will be grown. For breeding this crop in central Russia, it is better to give preference to frost-resistant varieties.

It is worth paying attention to the height of the bush, the shape of the color of its flowers. It is better to think in advance which composition on the site will be created from the meadowsweet. This will help you decide on varieties.

When choosing planting material (dividing) in the store, you need to focus on its appearance. Seedlings should be strong, look healthy, without any damage and breaks. You should look at the photo and read the description of the meadowsweet of a particular variety given on the package:

You can plant plants in the ground in autumn and spring. If the seedlings are purchased in the autumn period, it is necessary to plant them in the chosen place immediately after the purchase, then the delenki will have high frost resistance. If it is impossible to carry out such work, planting can be postponed until spring by storing the plants in a dark, cool place.

Before planting seedlings in the ground, a site in the garden is chosen for them, the soil is prepared: they are dug up and loosened. If necessary, apply fertilizer. Plants are not planted immediately, but 2 weeks after site preparation.

Tall specimens are seated at a distance of 40 - 50 cm from each other, undersized varieties- 30 - 40 cm.

Planting holes should not be too deep. Before planting, it is recommended to add river sand, pebbles, broken bricks or some other type of drainage. The hole is abundantly watered with water, then the plant is placed in it, straightening the roots, then the hole is covered with a layer of soil and the area around the bush is rammed.

After planting a seedling of a meadowsweet flower, regular care is taken to ensure that the plant is well rooted and adapted.

How the meadowsweet flower is used (with photo)

Meadowsweet can be called universal ornamental plant, the range of application of which on the plot is very wide.

As you can see in the photo above, meadowsweet flowers can be planted in the background of mixborders, made into green hedges separating the garden from the rest of the site, and also planted as a whole group on the edge of the lawn or as individual plants under the canopy of trees.

Thanks to the lush inflorescences, this culture will decorate any flower bed. Varieties with calm colors will help to dilute the motley composition, bright forms, on the contrary, will enliven the corners of the garden, where there is not enough diverse palette of colors.

Knowing what the meadowsweet looks like, the gardener can come up with the desired composition for his site in advance and select the appropriate varieties for this.

Tall varieties are used to create beautiful hedges, as well as fencing recreation areas, gazebos, sandboxes.

With the help of a meadowsweet, you can effectively arrange a garden path, existing voids on the site. Vyazolistny type is suitable for the design of artificial reservoirs.

This culture is in harmony with irises, phloxes, peonies, astilbes, carnations, hosts, marigolds, delphinums, lilies, ferns, loosestrife.

The genus Meadowsweet or Meadowsweet belongs to the Pink family. It consists of more than 15 species that grow in the temperate zone. Representatives of the genus are perennial herbs with straight shoots and usually feathery foliage.

The flowers are usually white or pink and form inflorescences. The main feature of this genus is that its representatives love moisture and tolerate frost well.

Meadowsweet species

Or six petal perennial with a straight shoot, growing almost a meter tall. It has pinnate foliage, on small white flowers 6 petals are placed. Sometimes disputes arise whether to attribute the steppe meadowsweet to this species or to classify it as a separate species.

The shoot can reach 2 m in height, densely covered with foliage. The foliage is pinnatipartite, in small teeth. The flowers are soft yellow close to cream in color, form panicle inflorescences. Probably this species is more popular than others, its varieties are grown quite often: Aurea , Rosea and captivity .

Shrub growing up to 150 cm tall. The foliage is lanceolate, rather large. Flowers pink, fluffy.

Perennial, reaching a meter height. The lower foliage is palmate, the upper is covered with a whitish fluff. The flowers are white, form panicles.

North American species, the height of which usually does not exceed 30 cm. The foliage has a yellow tint. The paniculate inflorescence of pink color is quite large, almost does not smell.

Meadowsweet planting and care in the open field

Caring for meadowsweet in open ground is not a particularly problematic task. For planting, you should choose well-lit places where flowering will be stronger. But in general, partial shade will not harm this flower either. If you plant a culture in the shade, then flowering will not be so bright.

There are no special requirements for the composition of the soil, the main thing is that it be loose and have enough moisture, but it is undesirable to allow stagnant water. The reaction of the soil is neutral, slightly acidic, with acidic it dies.

Before planting, it is advisable to add wood ash to the soil so that the plant is better accepted. Also make supports for the shoots, as they will start to fall over later.

During the growing season, organic or mineral fertilization is carried out a couple of times, but in general, meadowsweet can do without this procedure.

This plant is frost-resistant and does not need shelter with the advent of cold weather. In autumn, you just need to cut the shoots up to 6 cm in height.

Calendula is also medicinal plant and can easily complement your pharmacy, it does not require much effort when planting and caring in the open field. You can find recommendations for growing and caring in this article.

Watering Meadowsweet

The most important point in care is watering. Due to its moisture-loving nature, meadowsweet is excellent for planting on the banks of water bodies, as well as in lowlands.

The soil should always be moist, but not so much that water stands in the roots. Of all the species, only Meadowsweet ordinary normally withstands dryness.

Meadowsweet breeding

Meadowsweet can be propagated generatively, that is, by seed, and vegetatively, namely the division of the bush.

The division is resorted to in the fall. To do this, they select a large bush, carefully dig it out and cut it into sections. Each part is planted 5 cm deep, the ground around the division is not trampled. It is not recommended to start the division procedure before the bush is 4-5 years old.

Meadowsweet from seeds

Seeds are sown in the soil in autumn or spring. Autumn sowing is preferred, since in this case the germination rate is higher, since the material undergoes natural stratification. When sown in the spring, the seeds will have to be stratified on their own.

The day before sowing, the material is placed in water so that the dense shell softens. It does not hurt to treat with a growth enhancer. Between the furrows for sowing, 10-20 cm are observed, and after germination, it will be possible to transplant young plants to another place you need. Please note that flowering will begin only next year.

At autumn planting the bed should be covered so that young sprouts do not suffer from the cold.

Diseases and pests

In general, the meadowsweet rarely gets sick. Interestingly, wild-growing plants are quite often subjected to powdery mildew and rust, but cultivated individuals almost do not get sick.

Most often meadowsweet suffering from ramulariasis , which manifests itself as greenish spots, which gradually turn white, and begin to crack in the heat. If a disease is detected, it is recommended to treat the plant with fungicides, for example, Fundazol.

Common among pests aphid and tube-roller , with the appearance of which the bushes are treated with insecticidal preparations.

Landscaping the territory of a personal plot requires some agronomic and botanical knowledge. This is important for the correct selection of plants, taking into account their exactingness in terms of growth and decorative properties. Grass meadowsweet belongs to a species of plants that in vivo grow prefer coastal zones. Accordingly, on its site it is advisable to use it for landscaping the edge or lake. With the help of meadowsweet grass, you can not only hide some of the shortcomings of the existing landscape, but also create excellent conditions for shading flowers that are not demanding on the amount of sunlight.

Description of grass meadowsweet and its photo

So, let's start describing the meadowsweet grass, and the photos will show you all the splendor of adult developed bushes. First of all, let me reassure you, the meadowsweet plant is a perennial crop that can grow in the same place for 5 to 8 years. This greatly simplifies the care of meadowsweet during the growing process. It is not required, at least annually, to dig up the soil and plant seeds or seedlings. The meadowsweet flowers are a magnificent, moisture-loving representative of the rosaceous species. This group also includes wild rose, rose and many other plants known to you. The origin of the name of this herb is interesting. It comes from two Latin roots, which in literal translation mean "hang on threads." If you look at the meadowsweet in the photo, you will understand that the name is far from accidental. Its small tubers seem to hang on long thin threads of the root system.

About 10 simple and hybrid species of meadowsweet grass are used in ornamental horticultural culture. The main place for growing - complex waterlogged soils and the border of ponds and lakes.

Common types

In order for you to be able to choose the right plant for your garden, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the description of some species and varieties of meadowsweet. We will start with the most common meadowsweet, or as it is also called, meadowsweet.

Meadowsweet meadowsweet

Do you want the area around your artificial pond to be fragrant already in mid-May, drowning in a sea of snow-white horn-like flowers with a small bud diameter that is about 1 cm wide? Then pay attention to meadowsweet, or common meadowsweet: the photo shows adult bushy plants. In order to grow such a bush in your area, you will need about 2 years and proper care.
The inflorescence has 6 petals, which are collected neatly near the calyx with amniotic petals. White color. The leaves are concentrated at the base of the bush and have a patterned structure. As the shoot grows, the deciduous mass becomes more rare and gives way to the paniculate connection of inflorescences. After the flowering of the common meadowsweet, the meadowsweet develops edible fruits for 2 months, which resemble a berry with a crowned edge in shape.

Vyazolistny meadowsweet

Do you like the slender high thickets of openwork bushes that shade the shore of the pond from the hot midday sun? Then, especially for you, the elm-leaved meadowsweet variety was bred. This is a mighty tall plant of bush form, which, with proper care, reaches a height of 120 cm. The entire bush is covered with large foliage with feathery forms, dissected in some places.
The first flowers of meadowsweet appear in early June. General period flowering is approximately 2 months. The flowers are small in diameter and creamy white in color.

Red meadowsweet "Venusta"

An excellent decoration of any site is a combination of plants of the same species, but different varieties, which differ from each other not only in shape, but also in the color of the inflorescences. All this can be fully attributed to such a plant as the grass meadowsweet red "Venusta". It goes well in group plantings with meadowsweet and elm.

Look at the photo of the red meadowsweet, and you will see how gracefully on a tall stem, bordered by openwork elastic foliage, paniculate inflorescences are located, consisting of flowers of small diameter with different colors. Red and pink flowers predominate, and they are successfully set off by white cream and yellowish buds. It turns out an elegant and aesthetically attractive picture.

Care for the meadowsweet in the process of growing

In the wild, this plant is widely distributed along natural reservoirs. In this regard, we can say that no special care for the meadowsweet in the process of growing it is required. And this will be a big mistake, since it is worth understanding that the natural habitat is an interconnected chain of processes in which nutrients and loosening of the soil occurs naturally. Yes, and transplantation in wild plants occurs in a timely manner.
How to care for the meadowsweet in your area?
First you need to figure out where to plant it. Best to choose south sides with plenty of sunshine throughout the day. Although the meadowsweet grass also tolerates a slight shading, it also tolerates well. Well-structured loam is the type of soil that is preferred.
In the process of caring for the meadowsweet, the most important point is watering. If the root system has access to liquid from your artificial pond, great. If not, then it is desirable to organize watering in such a way that the soil ball is always wet at a depth of 5 cm.
For the first landing are used seedling method. Sowing seeds in protected ground or, more simply, on your windowsill, you can start in late February or early March. By the beginning of May, the seedlings will already be strong, and dived into separate peat pots. At this time, it is necessary to start hardening the seedlings, taking them out to fresh air every day for about 30 - 45 minutes.
Subsequently, you will be able to propagate meadowsweet grass by dividing its rhizome. Just in autumn, it is enough to dig up a root with a thickness of at least 1 cm and cut it into pieces of 5 cm in such a way that each cutting has 2-3 growth buds.
