Oriented strand boards, although they have an interesting pressed wood chip pattern, should not be left uncoated. This is especially true of OSB on the facade of the building, where the panels are exposed to all winds, rains and suffer from other surprises of changeable weather.

OSB needs to be protected from:

1. Moisture. Although water-resistant grade 3 or 4 OSB boards are used for facade work, if they are not covered with a protective material on the outside, after a while they will be saturated with moisture from the soil and the atmosphere and begin to swell.

2. Temperature fluctuations and sunlight over time can also damage OSB boards. In addition to darkening the wood filler, the case may result in the destruction of the resinous binder and flaking of the surface. True, such serious damage is more inherent in low-quality panels. Most importantly, oriented strand sheets are classified as highly combustible materials (group G4) and need to be protected from fire from the outside and inside.

Here the choice is the richest: clinker tiles, hinged bricks, wall paneling, siding - the list could go on and on. But why do developers use OSB on the facade? To make construction cheaper. It is with this attitude that you need to approach the selection of finishes.

1. Vinyl or acrylic siding- an economical material that is suitable for any facade. You can pick up panels that look like a block house or brickwork.

The plus is that if the facade of the house is sheathed with OSB, it is not necessary to mount the crate on a flat plane. But what you can’t do without is a windproof waterproof membrane, otherwise the siding “sweating” from the inside will cause the surface of the plates to swell.

Polymer facing products are produced with a thickness of 0.8 to 1.2 mm, but the larger this indicator, the longer they will last. Both types have good strength characteristics, are resistant to chemicals and do not support the spread of fire. Siding easily tolerates heating up to + 85-88 ° C and, subject to the production technology, does not fade in the sun. Acrylic panels behave slightly better than PVC, but they have no serious differences. Price - from 240 to 1210 rubles / m 2.

2. Decorative stone - such a cladding will make it possible to turn an OSB building into a solid brick or stone house, at least in appearance.

The process of finishing the OSB facade is quite complicated and costly, but the durability and ease of repair will pay off these costs in the future. To prepare the plates, you will need frost-resistant silicone-based sealants and antiseptic primers. On top of the panels, you will have to fix polystyrene foam, putty it, and cover it with reinforcing fiberglass on top and glue decorative items.

Artificial stone is made from Portland cement, which provides it with a high strength grade (from 150 and above). In addition, such lining withstands more than 100 freezing cycles, has a water absorption rate of 4-9%, which can be improved with a hydrophobic coating. Price - from 750 to 1450 rubles / m 2.

1. Plaster.

With the right choice of plaster composition, it will extend the life of the particle board for many years and help make its surface more fire resistant from the outside. The consumption of facade plaster on a flat OSB plane will be minimal, but the associated costs will completely “eat up” the money saved.

The panels will need to be isolated from the moisture contained in the mixture (ideally covered with polystyrene foam) and reinforced with a special mesh. Finishing is best done with textured acrylic-based decorative plaster. It is elastic so as not to crack at the joints of the plates. Silicone is more expensive, but it has greater frost resistance, which is quite important in our latitudes, and the highest strength indicators. 2. Varnishes and paints for OSB facades.

Paints and varnishes are the cheapest type of facade finish for OSB. Suitable water-based or oil paints on wood marked "for outdoor use." It is undesirable to use water-soluble coatings for OSB, as they will lead to uneven swelling of the surface layer.

But the OSB staining technology will need to be observed clearly:

  • Fill the interpanel seams with acrylic sealant.
  • Thoroughly clean and prime the surface of the plates.
  • When applying primer and paint, pay special attention to the ends, as they are the most vulnerable point of the sheet material.
  • OSB edges must be painted until all sharp corners are visible.

Oil paint is an ideal option for particle boards on the facade, but here you have to take into account that it needs to be updated every 2-3 years - it will lose its original color so quickly. saturated color. Consumption when covering the base with a primer does not exceed 200 g/m 2 . At a cost of 80 to 540 rubles / kg, finishing the facade in any case will be inexpensive.

Acrylic paint has a high resistance to abrasion - up to 5000 cycles for Ceresit - while it is elastic and does not crack. Consumption is 3-4 m 2 / l, but most of these products can be diluted with water (up to 10% of the total volume). The price varies from 57 to 285 rubles / l.

Acrylic varnishes, with their water resistance, have such valuable property like the ability to "breathe". Before you cover OSB boards varnished, it should be sanded, if it was not done in production, and degreased. The surface of the panel is primed, then varnish is applied. Transparent will emphasize the chip pattern and give the facade a noble shine, but you can also use tinted varnish in the case when the pattern is not so important.

If the OSB plane seems slippery, it means that waxes or paraffin were used to make it. Before finishing, it is covered with a primer paint with the addition of fine quartz dust (sand) - it will provide better adhesion to the next finishing layer. The varnish dries quite quickly - in just a day, forming a sun-protective and frost-resistant film resistant to abrasion. Consumption for a single-layer application is 8-10 m 2 / l, the price is 149-550 rubles / l.

OSB board is a durable and reliable material for facade cladding, but even for its highest quality brands, resistance to atmospheric phenomena is not high enough. It is possible to cover an unprotected facade with a windproof film, but this will not completely solve the problem of preserving OSB. The fact is that the windproof membrane is designed for the impact of individual drops, which are the result of condensation on the roofing. A good slanting rain, downpour, sleet is beyond her power, the windproof membrane will “cry” from the inside. Undoubtedly, the windscreen will reduce the wetting of the OSB, but it will not completely eliminate it.

OSB-3 boards, which, most likely, sheathed the frame of your house, can only be called moisture resistant with a stretch. And then we can talk about their resistance to moisture only in relation to chipboard, fiberboard, OSB-1 and OSB-2, which quickly collapse under the influence of water. OSB-3 is not intended to be used as a wall enclosing material without subsequent finishing, unlike, for example, cement-bonded particle boards (DSP). By the way, in Canada and the USA, from where they came to us frame technologies, for decorating decent houses that should stand for a long time, they use waterproof plywood, chipboard is the lot of the poorest.

Manufacturers give such a characteristic as the degree of swelling of the oriented strand board when it is in water for a day. For OSB-3 it is 15%. This is not so little, contrary to the claims of sellers and manufacturers. Of course, on the walls, the particle boards are in a vertical position and are only exposed to slanting rain on one side. However, let's assume that it rains for a week or two, sleet, wet. The low air temperature and the lack of sun do not allow the walls to dry out.

Unprotected from rain OSB sheets properly soaked and swollen. At the same time, they will increase not only in thickness, but also in length and width, albeit not so significantly. As a result, the chipboard panels, rigidly fixed to the frame, will warp. And it’s not a fact that when they dry, they will take their original shape, residual deformations are very likely. In addition, the attachment points will weaken, delamination of the ends may occur (it has already begun for you), and the bonding strength will decrease. Hardly in one season particle boards critical damage will not be dealt, but their service life will be reduced, the overall stability of the frame will decrease, this is a fact.

OSB is not a completely waterproof material; with prolonged exposure to moisture, it inevitably collapses.

In our opinion, the following options are possible for temporary protection of the unfinished facade from precipitation:

  1. Stretch the Isospan A windproof membrane (18 rubles / m2) along the vertical crate, use a bar 4-5 cm thick. The film is rather weak, it is not a fact that it will successfully survive the winter, it will not be torn by winds.
  2. Use Isospan AM (24 rub/m2) or Isospan AS (35 rub/m2). A three-layer windshield is stronger, less water vapor permeable, but three times more waterproof, which means it will get wet less. Under the finish (blockhouse), it could be stretched without a crate, right along the slabs. But in your case, a ventilated gap and a crate are needed. It is necessary to ensure free air flow, the gap should be at the bottom and at the top, under the roof. Option #2 is preferable.
  3. Stretch any vapor-waterproofing material cheaper along the crate in compliance with ventilation: roofing felt, building reinforced vapor barrier, dense plastic film for greenhouses (enough for one season). When cladding the facade, the waterproofing will have to be removed.

While there is no finish, polyethylene film can be used as a temporary protection, with or without reinforcement.

The right decision would still be to tighten up with finances and finish the exterior decoration by autumn, sheathing the facade with a blockhouse along a vertical crate. It will end up being cheaper, because the OSB boards themselves can serve as wind protection if they are neatly fitted. You don't have to spend money on tape.

In modern construction, oriented strand boards are very widely used. In the English abbreviation, they are designated OSB. Among our masters, they are more commonly called OSB, or, Russifying the original abbreviation, OSB. This does not change the essence - the plates have gained well-deserved popularity due to their technical and operational characteristics, quite affordable price. They are made from large wood chips, which make up at least 90% of the total volume, and binders - formaldehyde resins or polyurethane compounds with paraffin-wax impregnation.

OSB is usually used as structural material. It is generally accepted that they are suitable only for a rough surface that requires subsequent closure with one or another finish. But that's not the case at all. It turns out that OSB surfaces lend themselves perfectly to coloring, and if desired, they can be turned into a real work of design art. OSB boards can be divided according to different criteria. This is the level of moisture resistance and strength, the presence of locking joints, the environmental friendliness of the material, the thickness of the sheets.

According to their physical and technical characteristics, oriented strand boards are divided into four types. Each of them has its own purpose. Therefore, when purchasing building material, it is necessary to take into account the conditions in which they will be used.

  • OSB-1 do not have high strength and moisture resistance. Therefore, they are usually used as an auxiliary material. Their cost is low, and they are often used, for example, to create temporary formwork. After its dismantling, the used parts will not be a pity to dispose of.
  • OSB-2 - characterized by sufficiently high strength, but not outstanding moisture resistance. As a structural material, they can only be used for internal works and only in dry rooms. Suitable, for example, for sheathing light partitions in a room.
  • OSB-3 are products that can be called universal. Plates are applied both in dry rooms, and in the conditions of the increased humidity, including on the street. They sheathe walls, form interfloor ceilings, lay rough and “clean” floors from them under a decorative coating. Often used as a material for continuous lathing under some types of roofing.
  • OSB-4 - products with high moisture resistance and excellent strength. Therefore, they can be used in various areas of construction, including for the creation of self-supporting loaded structures.

Plates are most often produced in the size of 1250×2500 or 1220×2440 mm. Thickness range - from 6 to 25 mm. There may be other dimensions in length and width - this is worth paying attention to. Sometimes custom sizes allow you to choose best option for a specific coverage area. That is, they make it possible to avoid a large amount of waste when cutting the material.

OSB-plates can be ordinary and tongue-and-groove.

  • Ordinary OSB sheets have smooth edges. When sheathing surfaces at the joints with them, it is necessary to observe a technological gap of 3 ÷ 5 mm, which will keep the coating intact during the thermal expansion of the material. Such plates must be rigidly fixed to the base using self-tapping screws screwed in with a step of 350 ÷ 400 mm. It is recommended to fasten large OSB sheets not only around the perimeter, but also additionally along the diagonals.

  • Tongue-and-groove slabs are equipped with a tongue-and-groove joint. This option is more convenient when the slabs are planned to be used as finish coat, including - for further painting. The joints are more accurate, and the gaps between the plates are practically invisible. When fastening OSB sheet piling to a flat base, you do not have to use a lot of self-tapping screws. In addition, the products can be used as a floating cover when mounted on a concrete base.

Another important criterion for choosing OSB boards is the materials used in their manufacture. This parameter is especially important if the plates are purchased for sheathing surfaces inside residential premises.

As a binder for wood chips, formaldehyde resins can be used, which emit in environment toxic fumes. Such materials have formaldehyde emission class E2 and higher, and are unsuitable for internal use.

OSB boards produced according to European standards and labeled "ECO" or "GREEN" are suitable for such an application. The production technology excludes the presence of toxic compounds in the composition of the material. Wood raw materials are pre-treated with paraffin-wax impregnations, and polyurethane resins are used as a binder, after polymerization they become completely harmless to the environment.

The affixed class indicates the level of formaldehyde emission. E1 can be considered acceptable for residential premises, but E0.5 is better. And the best option is the “ECO” sign already mentioned above.

This option is fully suitable for residential premises. And it can be safely used for painting.

But in order to be sure of the "purity" of the material, when choosing it, you must carefully study the markings on the sheets. And this information must be confirmed by a certificate of quality (conformity), presented by the seller at the request of the buyer.

What paint compositions are used for OSB-boards?

Variety of coatings suitable for OSB

For coloring wood and products made on its basis, as a rule, several types of protective and coloring compositions are used:

  • - dispersed, made on the basis of polyacrylates and their copolymers, which act as film formers. When solidified, they form a sufficiently strong polymer layer on the surface of a wooden plate. This type is used for painting both internal and external surfaces. These are environmentally friendly compounds, they protect wood from moisture and have an affordable price.
  • Polyurethane paints also create a protective and decorative layer on the plate. This composition is mainly used on internal construction and finishing works Oh.
  • is highly elastic and resistant to detergents. These compounds are non-toxic and are great for painting interior surfaces.
  • Alkyd coloring compounds produced on the basis of alkyd resins. The film formed on the OSB surface has a higher strength, in contrast to aqueous solutions. Alkyd paints do not contain toxic substances, they are able to effectively protect the material from moisture and ultraviolet rays, are resistant to fading and dry quickly after application. When stained, the paint emits a pungent odor, so ventilation of the room should be provided.
  • Oil paints have a thick consistency, therefore they form on the surface pronouncedly thick layer. They are great for applying to the end sides of the boards, as they are able to protect them from moisture absorption. Paints have a specific smell, which disappears for a long time after they are applied. In addition, oil paint, unlike those mentioned above, requires a longer drying time.

In addition to universal paints for all types of wood, there are compositions specifically designed for coloring OSB. They are commonly referred to as primer paint and have the following features:

  • They are able to create reliable protection of oriented strand boards from external influences of moisture and ultraviolet radiation.
  • The composition has excellent adhesive properties with the surface of such plates.
  • High elasticity and vapor permeability are noted.
  • The density of the layer prevents the natural color of the OSB from showing through.
  • The paint-primer is produced in the basic white color and can be tinted to the desired shade.
  • Primer-paint is an environmentally friendly composition. It is made on a water basis with the addition of a special acrylic resin, mineral fillers and antiseptic additives.

The primer can be used as a base coat, or to prepare the surface for the subsequent application of a decorative layer.

Criteria for choosing paint for interior work

When choosing a composition for painting OSB indoors, it is necessary to take into account some factors:

  • Type of wood chips and type of binders used in the production of oriented strand board.
  • Decorating method, that is, it is planned to preserve the surface structure of the plate, or make it smoother.
  • Scope (floors or wall).
  • Features of the room in which it will be carried out

Paint should be selected based on the following recommendations:

  • Given that OSB boards are made up of 90% wood raw materials, oil paint will be a universal coating for them. Such compositions of the trade marks "Coloray", "Syntilor" and others are of high quality. They have excellent adhesion, minimal absorbency, and the base on which paints are made (linseed oil) significantly reduces material consumption. Oil paint forms a reliable, durable protective layer on the surface, so it is well suited for painting OSB boards laid on floors.

  • Alkyd enamels are well suited for painting both walls and floors. They also create a durable, reliable coating. However, the consumption of this type of coloring composition exceeds that of oil.

  • Water-based paints are not very resistant to moisture. They are well suited for painting walls in dry rooms. These are environmentally friendly compositions, so they are used to decorate the walls of residential premises - children's rooms and bedrooms. The brands Tikkurila, Teknos, Sadolin, etc. are considered to be among the best on the Russian market. By the way, some of the compositions are still given resistance to regular wet cleaning.

  • For OSB surfaces, especially if they are sheathed in rooms with high humidity, polyurethane paint based on organic solvents. Traditionally, such paints of the International Paint, Sterling and Coatings brands are of high quality. When applying polyurethane compounds to OSB, they create, in combination with the resins that are part of the material, high-strength compounds, which makes the coating durable and wear-resistant.

  • If it is planned to preserve the original structural pattern of OSB, as well as to improve the quality of the surface, the walls are covered with water-based transparent varnishes.

  • If OSB is to be installed as a floor finish and a smooth surface is required, an epoxy finish can be used.

The surface can be decorated by giving the composition the desired color or adding certain inclusions to it (sparkles, chips, etc.). Or they retain the natural color and pattern of the plates. And an epoxy composition is applied according to the technology used to create a self-leveling 3D polymer floor.

How to paint OSB

Preparatory work

Before painting the plate must be prepared. This is necessary so that the paint fits well and stays on the surface.

If it is planned to sheathe the walls and ceiling with approximate particle boards, then it is easier to carry out the preparatory work even before the installation of the plates on the crate.

Depending on the chosen painting technique, it may be more profitable to do it in advance, before installing the skin. This is due to the fact that some of the decoration methods involve several stages of cleaning and painting.

  • So, the first step is to clean the entire surface with a manual grinder, on which a sandpaper nozzle is attached.

If it is planned to preserve the textured OSB pattern, then an emery nozzle with a medium-sized grain (approximately P120) is selected for cleaning in order to free the surface from the protective layer of binders. If the slab needs to be leveled to smoothness for continuous painting, then first cleaning is carried out first with coarse (P80), and then fine grain (P200 and above).

After removing the top protective layer, the primer or paint will easily penetrate into the structure of the material.

If OSB-3 or OSB-4 boards are purchased, then their stripping should be carried out most carefully, since they have a more reliable surface varnish coating.

  • The second step in preparing the plates is masking the seams and caps of the screws. Various means are used. This, for example? can be ready-made parquet on an oil-adhesive basis or special elastic. Sealant or special elastic tape is used.

If the joints and holes from the self-tapping screws need to be completely hidden, preserving the natural color or making it a few tones darker, then sawdust should be added to the putty, which will remain when cutting the sheets. In this case, the gaps must be filled very carefully, without going beyond them. And if necessary, after the putty mass has hardened, the seams are cleaned with a grinder with an emery nozzle.

If the surface is to be smooth and uniformly colored, then an elastic tape is used to mask the seams.

  • The next step, under a solid monophonic painting, a primer is applied to the plates, which can be used as a polyurethane-acrylic, acrylic or alkyd varnish. The choice of composition depends on the base of the paint, which will cover the surface. When using a water-based varnish as a primer, it must be diluted 1:10 with water.

Other than these options? for preparatory work adhesive primers are used, for example "Aqua Filler". This type of primer is designed to isolate wood from paintwork. Such compositions are particularly well suited for coating boards made from conifers wood, as the primer will prevent resin from seeping through to their surface.

OSB painting

So, OSB boards can be painted in one color, retaining the texture or leveling the surface to smoothness. Such staining is not difficult to perform - it does not differ much from the usual application of paint to any other base.

The painting process will be quick if the plates are properly prepared. However, there are other techniques that can change the plates beyond recognition, reliably hiding the joints and fasteners.

This is how the plate will look if you simply apply paint to it with a roller or brush. This option is unlikely to be suitable for residential premises. Therefore, some home craftsmen and professional finishers are developing and putting into practice more creative options for coloring OSB boards.

There are several available options available.

The first option for decorating OSB

In this case, the floors are finished using multi-layer staining technology. To achieve this effect will require a lot of time and patience.

To paint the floor, you need to prepare several tones of the same color. The work takes place in the following order.

  • The first thing that is recommended to be done is to draw up a sketch of the future floor design. Moreover, it is desirable to perform it in two versions - in graphic and color. The sketch will clearly show how the finished coating will look like, and will also help in further work.
  • The slab is completely painted with a primer-paint of the base color. The lightest shade of the selected color should serve as the base. To apply paint, you must use an airbrush. Such application will ensure that the paint gets into all the recesses of the textured surface, while maintaining the surface relief.
  • To emphasize the depth of the relief, the floors can be lightly cleaned with a grinder.
  • Now the entire painted surface is divided into fragments in the form of stones or other elements. The markup is carried out with a reference to the drawn up sketch, first with a simple pencil. And then it “rises” with a brush and paint 4 ÷ 5 tones darker than the base color.
  • In the next step, each fragment of the coating is painted with paint of a different tone, which must be prepared in advance.
  • Further, each of the fragments is cleaned. At this stage, it is not necessary to process the entire surface; it is possible to clean one or two sides of the stone, simulating its volume.
  • Then the contours of each of the stones are drawn again.
  • After drying, the surface is varnished, the basis of which is selected depending on the type of paint.

The second option for decorating OSB

If there is no desire to come up with the shape and size of the stones, you can go the other way. Specifically, lay out a coating of small square slabs. Adjacent panels are laid so that the direction of the laid chips is perpendicular to each other.

This option will allow you to create an original textured flooring pattern and well mask the joints between the plates.

If OSB has a color that satisfies the owner of the house, then the coating can simply be coated with several layers of varnish or epoxy, after cleaning the surface. In the case when the shade is not quite satisfied, it can be changed using stain or the technique proposed below.

However, it must be borne in mind that the plates will have to be sawn into separate fragments, the edges of which must be perfectly even. In addition, a similar flooring option will look aesthetically pleasing only on a perfectly flat base.

The third option for decorative painting OSB

This method of staining plates is available to anyone, even an inexperienced master. The main thing in this process is to follow the instructions provided by the professionals.

The photo shows an example of OSB staining, which is used to sheathe the walls inside the house. In this case, two colors of paint were used for decoration. But if desired, more of them can be involved, depending on the desired result.

How the OSB decoration process is carried out in this technique will be presented using the example of small sections of the slab in the instruction table.

To work in this case, the tools used were a "Kremlin HTI" spray gun with a 1.8 mm nozzle, a grinder with emery nozzles with grains of different sizes, and a special sponge with an abrasive surface.

So the first step is to sand the surface.
A grinder is used with an emery nozzle with P180 grit installed on it.
The process is carried out without strong pressure, since only the protective layer needs to be removed from the plate.
Since paraffin or wax, as well as resins are used in the manufacture of OSB, the surface of the board must be covered with a barrier primer. It will delay the appearance of resins and paraffin on the decorated flooring.
In this case, barrier soil FI M 194 is used. The soil consumption will be 50÷60 grams per 1 m².
The primer is applied with a spray gun. The drying time of this layer is one and a half hours.
The next step is to apply pigment primer to the entire surface of the plates, which will become the basis for creating colors finishing material.
In this case, polyurethane primer is used. white color.
The consumption of pigment soil will be 90÷100 grams per 1 m². The time required for the coating to dry under normal conditions is 3÷4 hours.
When the primer is completely dry, the part must be sanded again by setting it on grinder sandpaper with grit size P320.
After grinding, the surface must be well cleaned of dust with a vacuum cleaner.
To create the effect of a delicate sheen, the next step is to apply the composition "Effect of mother-of-pearl" to the surface.
The consumption of the wet applied layer will be 100÷120 grams per 1 m². And then 40 ÷ 60 minutes are given to dry the composition.
On top of the mother-of-pearl layer, also with the help of an airbrush, a patina paint is sprayed, which will give the effect of “noble aging”.
The consumption of this composition is 60-80 grams per 1 m².
After 5÷7 minutes after spraying the patina, its excess must be removed with an emery sponge (bar) with P320 grain.
Then the entire surface must be well cleaned of dust with a vacuum cleaner.

He is already quite capable of becoming the final option. But if you wish, you can continue decorating.
The next step is to spray the slab with tinted acrylic lacquer mixed with stain.
Instead of stain, a different color composition can be used. The main thing to take into account is that the composition of all solutions used for staining organically combined with each other.
