How to make a beautiful threshold. Types and self-installation of thresholds for the entrance and interior doors

This element of the door block, which many people forget, performs not only a decorative function. Its main role is to increase the level of sound insulation, reduce heat loss and prevent dust from entering from the street. Therefore, the issue of self-arrangement of the threshold in the opening at the entrance to a private house or apartment should be approached consciously and rationally.

general information

There are enough options for making the nut. But the adoption of the optimal decision depends on the result of the analysis of many factors. Since you have to arrange a threshold at the front door, the choice is not so big. What should you pay attention to?

  1. Material. In terms of durability, minimum abrasion, only metal (the best option) or wood are suitable. It is these doors that are installed at the entrance to the dwelling, and therefore a rational combination of the threshold with the frame will be ensured.

  1. threshold height. Standard indicators - 25 ± 5 mm. This provides ease of movement for households. But here, too, there are nuances that dictate the need to deviate from the recommended values.
  • Flooring. If the hallway, for example, is covered with a thick carpet (which is not uncommon in private homes), then when determining a sufficient height, an appropriate amendment must be made.
  • Width. The threshold for the front door must correspond to the foot of a person (size 43 is taken as an average).
  • metal thickness. Door leafs, as a rule, are equipped with crossbars. If the steel threshold is mounted independently, this must be taken into account.
  • Entry design. If not a staircase, then at least a couple of steps usually leads to the door of a private building. For convenience, it is advisable to mount a small platform in front of the opening. It will also be needed if the height of the threshold (standard) of the front door is specially increased. For example, to level the significant difference between the last step (or porch decking) and the flooring in the hallway.

Installation procedure

If a new door threshold is installed to replace the worn one, then the defective element of the opening is dismantled; the working area must be thoroughly cleaned.

The interval between the racks of the frame is measured and the specifics of fastening the threshold to it are determined. For example, for wood, you will have to take into account amendments for the arrangement of the tenon-groove connection. Based on the measurement, the workpiece length is calculated.

Base horizontal control. The threshold should lie strictly parallel to the top of the door block. Otherwise, when opening / closing the sash, problems will arise. Leveling the surface is easy to do with the arrangement of the screed. Wedges will also help to raise the edge of the nut if it is wooden. Regardless of the technique, in the end it should take a horizontal position.

Aperture marking. The recommendation on how to make an entrance door threshold in an apartment is unequivocal - fix it on a concrete floor using anchor bolts or self-tapping screws with dowels. In a private house made of wood, fastening can also be done with nails. The optimal distance between the hardware is 100 mm.

Setting the threshold, aligning its position relative to the horizon and fastening in place. The gaps between it and the floor are sealed (mortar or sealant, depending on the materials of the opening element and the base).

Surface finish. Finishing the threshold of wood consists in installing a covering metal frame. You can take a piece of channel of the appropriate width; sheet iron with which the bar is upholstered. In terms of decoration, painting steel is easy. But given the increased abrasion of this part of the opening, it is advisable to use stainless steel. As you know, white color belongs to the category of neutral ones, and therefore such a threshold finish for a door at the entrance will suit any block structure.

If during the installation process a site was equipped, then it is also subject to registration. With regard to the concrete base, the tile at the front door will come in handy. The assortment of this product is large, and it is not difficult to choose its acceptable shade and texture.

A threshold for a private house can also be built from brick, concrete; strength and durability will be ensured. But in any case, you will have to work with the solution, import materials (for the same formwork). A simpler solution is to buy a ready-made threshold; in furniture stores they are sold in various modifications. But the installation of such an attractive design as a guillotine on the front door is impractical. It is installed in prefabricated canvases, with the help of special tools, and independently, given the complexity, this work cannot be competently performed.

For a private house, the technology described is, in most cases, quite enough. There is a choice of materials and technical solutions. And most importantly, they can be implemented independently.

The threshold is the final element in the formation of the entrance to the room. A large number of options not only for entrance, but also for interior thresholds, implies their different design and installation. In order to correctly select and install the required threshold for doors, you need to study the types of these structures, the materials for their manufacture and the installation technique.

What is it needed for?

Any thresholds are designed to perform the following functions:

  • Separating - the threshold of the front door is designed to separate the room from the street;
  • Protective - prevents the ingress of dust, dirt from the street or another room;
  • Noise-absorbing - contributes to soundproofing in the room. For this, products with rubber inserts are actively used, which will ensure tightness in the best possible way;
  • Decorative - beautiful and original thresholds with a door will create a unique set;
  • Protective - provide additional protection for doors from breaking. For example, there are threshold designs in which a special system of locks is mounted;
  • Retaining - the thresholds can hold the flooring (linoleum, laminate);
  • Decorating - some models are installed in such a way as to hide flaws or defects in the floor;
  • Heat-saving - all thresholds keep heat in the house or apartment.

Types and device

Thresholds are of the following types:

  • Input- installed at the entrance to the house (apartment, building);
  • Interroom- mounted in the opening in the bathroom or shower room. Many do not understand why a threshold is needed inside the apartment at the entrance to the bathroom. Everything is very simple: if there is a breakthrough of water in this room, it will become a boundary that will not let the flow into the rest of the apartment. Some install this limiter in order to isolate the entire apartment from excess moisture coming from the bathroom. In addition, no one forbids installing a threshold in the hallway or near the doorway in the kitchen;
  • To the balcony- is a necessary element, as it retains heat in the apartment and prevents dust from entering inside. In this case, from the outside, the threshold should be, first of all, functional, and from the inside - beautiful and matching in design with the overall design of the room.

Among the types of this design, there are models with an interesting and unusual name - guillotines. They are attached to the end of the door. When the door closes, they move down and completely tear the gap between the floor and the door.

Some doors are already sold complete with a threshold. Which is very convenient, since you do not need to waste time searching for the required instance. In the absence of such an element at the door in finished form, it can be purchased separately and installed independently.

The assortment of building stores is quite diverse. Finding the right product is not difficult. On sale you can see thresholds from both inexpensive materials and quite expensive specimens. Thresholds are made from the following materials:

  • Wood is an inexpensive option. There are both interior and entrance wooden thresholds. Its quality depends on the type of wood. Oak, pine, hornbeam are considered the strongest and most wear-resistant. A feature of wooden models is the need for careful care and annual staining. Plus - the tree is easier to mount.

  • Metal is a durable material. Powders from it are represented by a variety of shapes and types. They are exceptionally durable. The same feature is possessed by products made of steel and brass. An aluminum threshold is used to fix the floor covering.

  • Plastic is a rather brittle material.. Plastic thresholds are subject to deformation during prolonged exposure to the sun. This type of product is best used in conjunction with a plastic door.

  • stone, concrete are used mainly for mounting at the entrance from the street and on the balcony. It is not recommended to install such products inside the room due to the weight of the structure itself and its volume. This type of threshold can be easily finished with laminate and other decorative elements.

  • Cork- it is used when it is necessary to hide the difference between the floor level in different rooms. This material is very flexible and plastic, compared to other options presented.

Installation Features

It is not necessary to contact specialist craftsmen in order to make the threshold in the room. You can do the installation yourself, but be sure to remember that the standard height of this product is 30 mm. There is only a slight deviation from the norm up or down.

In order to start work, you need to make sure that the surface of the future threshold is flat and dry. If this is not the case, it is necessary to correct the defects so that subsequently the finished product does not warp or deform.

Entrance options are best made from the most durable materials. Using brick and concrete, you can make a threshold for the front door. Since concrete is a liquid substance, it is necessary to make a formwork for it (from old or unnecessary boards), which will subsequently be cemented with the composition. With this approach, it will not stand out from the general view of the opening of the room.

When installing a threshold made of wood, the work algorithm is somewhat different.

The procedure for mounting it is as follows:

  • The length and width of the structure is measured;
  • Materials for the threshold are being prepared (they are sawn into pieces);
  • Grooves are cut in the boards (the height of the boards should correspond to the height of the future step);
  • The distance through which the nails will be driven in is calculated (usually it is 10 cm);
  • The level of the surface is checked using the building level. It must be even;
  • The threshold is fixed on nails (screws);
  • The final finishing of the threshold is being carried out.

When constructing the threshold in front of the balcony door, the same materials are used as for the front door. The work is carried out in the same way.

When installing the threshold, the length of the foot of an adult is taken into account so that it is convenient to use the step and the leg fits completely on it. In some cases, the design of thresholds begins with the fact that the threshold is first finished in the room, and then the rest of the step is mounted from the outside.

decorative design

Many owners are thinking about how to finish the threshold upon completion of the mount. If it was made of wood, then it is logical to carry out work on coating the product with varnish, paint or a special solution to protect it from moisture and dirt.

Brick or concrete products are best decorated with tiles, laminate. One of the cheapest ways to date is linoleum trim. It's inexpensive, but not very durable either.

How the threshold of an apartment or room will be finished depends on the preferences and fantasies of the owners of the house. In any case, it is necessary to carry out work on mounting the product with high quality. After all, such things are mastered not for one year.

A properly installed and finished threshold will not only protect the room from the cold, but also give a complete look to the entire room.

When deciding on the design of the threshold, they must take into account the size and material from which the box and the passage door are made. The threshold will fully fulfill its functions when the following indicators are taken into account when designing it:

  • floor level. This indicator is taken into account in the first place, since the very height of the nut depends on it. Too high will prevent free movement around the room, as well as too low. A standard step should not exceed 3 cm in front of the front door. In a private house, it can be higher.
  • Material. Its choice will depend on the expected degree of load and frequency of use of the product. If this is the input threshold, then it is better to choose metal. For interior doors made of PVC, wood or plastic is best suited. To enter the balcony, they purchase tiles, metal and wood.
  • No gaps between all components of the doorway - the threshold must clearly match the size and shape of the opening. The ideal solution to this problem would be to purchase a threshold along with a door.

When the front door opening is already installed, and the door is almost ready to perform its functions, there is very little left - to equip the threshold correctly and efficiently. In addition, thresholds are also installed for interior passages, and in order for all processes to be done by hand, it is necessary to study all the installation features. Today I will tell you how to make doors with a threshold in the apartment and with your own hands.

Threshold for the front door in the apartment

Types and features

Since the threshold is an important element that is constantly subjected to mechanical stress, it should be chosen according to the type of room and its use. The sills are usually installed as needed, but there are places where they must be located. These places are:

  • Entrance doors
  • Balcony
  • Bathroom

Important! Doors with a threshold to the balcony can be installed both with standard crossbars, and with the help of an additional layer of thermal insulation and elevation with brick or concrete.

As a beginner, it was not immediately clear to me why the mandatory installation of thresholds was necessary, and therefore I began to review various sources and, in addition, asked for help from my friend the master, who willingly told me about the functions that the front door threshold can perform. I decided to make a small table about their types and functions:

Kinds Functions
From wood - it is better to use durable wear-resistant species. Oak has these properties. Sound insulation - if a sealing rubber is also installed along with the door threshold
Plastic is the most affordable option. The material is better to choose thick and be UV resistant Thermal insulation - plays the role of an obstacle to the ingress of cold into housing and drafts
Made of metal - they are the strongest and most durable, but do not always fit the overall look Thanks to the design around the perimeter, an attractive appearance of the doorway is created.
Made of stone - can be used as a threshold for entrance and balcony doors Security
Separation of space - most often used for different floor coverings and as a carpet holder

Nuances to consider

Before you make the threshold of the front door, you should not only choose the material from which it will be built, but learn about some of the features. To begin with, I want to say that the standards for the height of the threshold for entry are 30 mm. However, in some cases it may be slightly lower or higher.

Important! It should be borne in mind that a high threshold can create discomfort for residents of the apartment. Therefore, you should think about a suitable height before starting installation.

It also happens that, along with the threshold, a platform is also equipped, this is used to expand the area on which a person will step. Such a site is made by arranging the formwork and pouring concrete. In the future, such a threshold can be finished with tiles and thereby make it more stable and durable. Since thresholds can be made from different materials, I decided to describe each type. Thanks to this, you will have the opportunity to choose the most optimal for your front door. Before you make a threshold, prepare, which consists in dismantling old materials and cleaning up dust and dirt in the places where the new half-horn is arranged.

Do it yourself

If you decide that the threshold of your apartment will be made of wood, then you will need the following tools:

  • Hammer and nails
  • Sander

Since the material is not so wear-resistant, it is necessary to immediately think about the subsequent finishing with the help of impregnations, varnishes and paintwork materials. Follow this plan if you decide to make the threshold for the apartment yourself:

  1. Take the necessary measurements and prepare the boards as needed by sawing them into the desired pieces.
  2. Make grooves using sawing - their height is equal to the height of the new threshold for the apartment
  3. Make markings and leave marks every 10 cm - then drill out the bases for the nails
  4. Use a level to check the levelness of the base
  5. Fix the threshold using screws or nails
  6. Carry out decorative work and cover the wood with varnish or paint of the desired color

Important! If you purchased a ready-made threshold, then you just need to install it using fasteners.

Concrete thresholds require more careful preparation and some skill, because for them it is necessary to equip the formwork into which concrete is later poured. This option is most often used in private houses, not apartments. For this process you will need:

  1. concrete mortar
  2. formwork
  3. Primer
  4. Spatulas
  5. Construction ruler and level

After cleaning the site from dust and dirt, it is necessary to treat the surface with a soil solution. After it dries, formwork should be done. When it is ready, the concrete mixture is diluted and poured to a certain level. Remember that in the end the door must be in full contact with the threshold, so think about finishing the concrete structure in advance.

Threshold-guillotine - what is it?

Such a threshold is a mechanism that, when the door is open, goes down and does not interfere with normal movement. With it, you no longer need to constantly raise your legs when entering the apartment. This is very convenient, because remember how many times you accidentally stumbled, forgetting to raise or raising your leg to a lower height?

The guillotine has several advantages that make it very popular and in demand in the world of rapids:

  • The seal has a very good stroke, allowing you to hide large gaps
  • Acceptable cost
  • Easy installation and replacement
  • Such a threshold has a long service life - 200-250 thousand openings
  • Excellent thermal and sound insulation performance

Decorative decoration of the entrance to the apartment can be varied and is carried out strictly according to your taste preferences. Someone uses tiles, someone likes coloring, and someone who decides to save money uses the usual design with linoleum. In any case, the finish should be of high quality and fit into the overall interior of the room. The functionality of the threshold and its appearance can not only protect the interior from the cold, but also complement the appearance of the room somewhere.

The threshold under the front door prevents cold air and dust from the street from entering the house. This simple design tightly closes the gap to the street under the door leaf, so it becomes a good sound and heat insulator. In addition, it prevents the door from breaking.

The threshold is a bar that is located at the bottom of the door frame.

This design for a private house is made by hand from the following materials:

  • wood;
  • concrete;
  • plastic;
  • metal.
Threshold for the entrance door, made of different materials

Threshold Selection Criteria

If the bar comes with the door frame, then you don’t have to select the design - it is simply installed during the installation of the frame. If the front door kit does not provide for it, then you need to independently choose the material and its design. Installation is carried out after the installation of the box.

When choosing a design type, consider the following parameters:

  • the tightness of the web to the threshold;
  • construction height;
  • the material from which it will be made.

In order for the threshold to fit as tightly as possible to the door, choose the right shape and size of the product. It is better to order it together with the door frame.

Various types of door seals

The height of the product depends on how tightly the canvas will fit to the threshold. However, it cannot be made too high, since it is inconvenient to step through such a detail when entering or leaving the house. Insufficient threshold height will not be able to provide reliable protection for your home. The recommended height is 30 mm. Some seals are equipped with additional locking structures.

Threshold for the entrance door with holes for the crossbars of the lock design

When choosing a material, remember that the threshold is subjected to mechanical stress during operation, and therefore it must be durable. Wood, concrete or metal is suitable for the entrance nut.

If you decide to make a wooden threshold, install a hardwood plank, such as oak. Such a product will require constant care to maintain an aesthetic appearance and increase its service life, painting or varnishing. A wooden structure is the least durable compared to concrete or metal, but it is easier to repair and, if necessary, dismantle it.

Attention! To increase heat and sound insulation, a structure with a rubberized insert is installed.

How to make a wooden threshold in the apartment

Tools and materials for do-it-yourself work

For high-quality installation work, first prepare the tool and materials. You will need:

  • a hammer;
  • hacksaw or grinder;
  • chisel;
  • plumb;
  • broom;
  • tassel;
  • board;
  • wood primer;
  • varnish or paint.

Installation steps

  • Preparing the base for the threshold.

At this stage, the installation site of the bar is cleaned. If there is an old threshold already installed, then it is dismantled. They level the base, remove the influx of concrete, plaster the pits, clean the dirty places, sweep the garbage with a broom.

  • Threshold measurements.

At this step, the distance between the vertical racks of the box is measured and the desired width of the structure is determined. Next, a wooden board with such parameters is purchased.

  • Formation of the bar according to the dimensions.

It is desirable to make the threshold wider than the door frame. Then, if you cut the corners of the vertical posts to the height of the threshold, you can mount it in the box. At the same time, it is better fixed and strengthens the box itself.

  • Installation and adjustment of the nut.

The bar is set in place using the building level. Be sure to check how the door works with the bar installed. It should open and close freely. When closed, the bottom of the door should fit snugly against the ledge on the sill. After checking, the threshold is fixed with self-tapping screws or nails.

  • The design of the nut.

Trim the threshold by painting with oil paint or varnishing.

wooden threshold

So that when fixing the nut, the wooden plank does not crack, holes are first drilled in those places where nails are to be hammered.

How to make a concrete door threshold with your own hands

To build such a structure is a time-consuming task, but the product will last much longer than a wooden one.

Tools and materials for work:

  • a hammer;
  • perforator;
  • level;
  • putty knife;
  • container for mixing the solution;
  • electric drill with mixer nozzle;
  • roulette;
  • screwdriver;
  • broom;
  • cement;
  • sand;
  • water;
  • primer;
  • wooden boards for formwork;
  • self-tapping screws.

Do-it-yourself installation of a concrete threshold

  • Cleaning the surface of the base.

As with the installation of a wooden structure, the old threshold is first dismantled and the base is cleaned for a new one. Cracks and pits are sealed with cement-sand mortar.

  • Surface primer.
  • Installation of formwork for concrete

Formwork is made of wooden boards or planks around the perimeter of the threshold. It must be securely fixed. Installation is carried out by level.

Attention! To create a solid structure, metal bolts are screwed into the base of the nut to the height of the structure (they play the role of reinforcement) or a metal mesh or wire is laid.

  • Mixing concrete mortar.

For mixing concrete mortar, cement and sand are taken in a ratio of 1: 3. It is advisable to add plasticizers to the mixture for the solution, which will give frost resistance to the structure. You can use ready-made mixtures that are sold on the construction market.

  • Pouring concrete solution into the formwork

The solution is poured into the formwork and carefully leveled so that all corners are filled with concrete. Now it remains to wait for the time for the solution to dry. During drying, the surface of the sill is moistened several times with water from above so that the drying takes place evenly and the concrete does not crack.

Using a guillotine nut

It is also called an automatic lifting threshold. This design is installed in the lower part of the door. The insertion is carried out to a depth of 20 cm.

The nut is made of aluminum with a seal made of rubber or rubberized material and a spring.

Threshold guillotine type

From the side of the hinge rack, a bar with a button crashes into the door. When closing, the button is pressed, the threshold spring is activated, and the seal goes down to the floor covering.

The service life of the structure is up to 25 years.

Such a system is easily repaired, and parts that fail can be replaced.

Finishing the threshold of the front door with your own hands

The gaps between the base floor and the threshold are filled with concrete mortar. After drying, it is puttied with silicone putty. The metal nut that comes with the box does not need to be decorated.

metal threshold

In a wooden structure, cracks and chips are sealed with wood putty, the plank is primed and then, at the discretion of the owner, painted or varnished. The junction between the structure and the floor is made using a plinth.

For a concrete structure, staining, tiling or linoleum is used as a finish. The joint can also be hidden with a wooden, plastic or metal plinth.

Floor ceramic tiles for finishing the threshold at the door are matched to the color of the main floor near the front door.

Threshold of ceramic tiles

For tiling, you will need the following tools and materials.

  • building level;
  • plastic cross stitches;
  • tiles for design;
  • tile cutter;
  • rubber mallet;
  • tile adhesive;
  • grout.

Before finishing, the base under the tile is cleaned and leveled.

The adhesive is applied with a notched trowel onto the tile and base. Next, the tile is pressed against the threshold by hand. For a snug fit, it is tapped with a rubber mallet. The correct installation is checked using a level. Near the tile is laid at a distance of 2-10 mm. Plastic crosses are inserted between the elements. Once the tile is laid, you can proceed to the design of the riser. The seams on the sill and on the riser must match.

After the glue has dried, the crosses are removed, and the seams are made using grout.

The element of the door frame, a functional design, which is designed to hide the junction between different floor coverings and differences between unequal floor levels, as well as to improve the interior, is called an interior threshold. This part is usually installed near the front door to an apartment or house, between rooms, at the entrance to the kitchen, bathroom, in the corridor. Some owners put anti-slip profiles on the steps of the stairs. The article will discuss how to install interior thresholds.

Interior thresholds are an interior detail that is most susceptible to stress and mechanical stress, since it protrudes several millimeters above the rest of the floor covering. Therefore, the choice must be taken responsibly.

Advantages and disadvantages of interior thresholds

Advantages of interior thresholds.

  • A massive wooden door absorbs noise, the threshold also copes with this task. To achieve a greater effect, you need to choose a threshold box that is equipped with a rubber seal.
  • Protection against penetration of dust and drafts into the room.
  • With a small flood in the bathroom, the threshold creates an obstacle for the overflow of water; with a significant flood, this design will be useless. So that after the flood the threshold does not become unusable, a stone structure should be used. To prevent the occurrence of high humidity in the bathroom, you can opt for a box without a seal.
  • When cooking, the threshold will protect other rooms from the penetration of burning and smoke from the kitchen.

Threshold disadvantages.

  • Classic thresholds protrude above the floor surface and often cause falls, especially for children who forget to step over them.

  • Some floor coverings, such as, for example, laminate or linoleum, look more harmonious without any thresholds in the opening.

Materials for the manufacture of interior thresholds

Before starting work on installing the structure, it is necessary to decide on the choice of material from which the sills will be made. The choice is huge.

  • Metal interior thresholds. Metal is the most commonly used material for making interior thresholds. They can be brass, aluminum, steel, bronze and even stainless steel. Each material has its own distinctive features, but all of them can be used outdoors, as they are resistant to weathering. These metals are difficult to oxidize, which means they will not rust and collapse underfoot.

  • Steel. Thresholds made of this material are quite durable and resistant to any kind of mechanical stress; there are painted or anodized elements on sale.
  • Stainless steel. Products are rarely used for installation on the floor surface, they are more often used for finishing walls and furniture, because they have a silver color and a glossy or matte finish.
  • Bronze. This is an expensive material, the sills of which are made only for individual orders, they are not on the free market. Aluminum thresholds are made "in bronze", they are available for everyone.
  • Brass. Durable thresholds of golden color are made from this expensive and rather valuable material.
  • Aluminum. From an alloy of various metals, in which aluminum predominates, reliable and lightweight products are made. They have an unlimited service life and an affordable price.

To give color to metal thresholds, they are usually coated with paint, laminated or anodized. The profile of steel and aluminum is coated with a plain paint or imitation of wood is made. In addition, the aluminum profile is laminated, that is, covered with a durable film that copies the appearance of stone, wood and other natural materials. Anodized thresholds come in three colors: silver, gold and bronze. The painting procedure is carried out by passing current through water, in which particles of the coloring matter are diluted and the product itself is located.

  • Wooden interior thresholds. This is the most common option. It is recommended to use oak. Since it is the most durable and wear-resistant type of wood. Oak thresholds are suitable for any type of flooring, but they are quite expensive, require systematic maintenance in the form of painting or varnishing, and are short-lived.

  • Plastic interior thresholds. Plastic products are an average option in terms of durability between metal and wood, they are attracted by a neat appearance, a variety of colors and an affordable cost. But over time, they require replacement, as they can burst as a result of intense mechanical stress.
  • Interroom thresholds from a laminate. Most often they are used in combination with a similar material covering the floor surface. It is able to gradually deform in conditions of high humidity.
  • Concrete interior thresholds. This non-shrinking material is used to make a threshold when exiting a balcony or from a house. Various substances are added to concrete, which make it plastic and durable.

Types of interior thresholds

  • Flat or overhead thresholds are a metal or plastic plate, which can have a variety of shapes, it closes the gap between different types of flooring (tiles and linoleum, carpet and laminate). It is attached from above, which is why the plate is called the consignment note.
  • Multi-level or transition thresholds are designed to hide the transition from one floor covering to another if they are located at different heights (from 3 to 15 mm). Most often, such elements have a rounded shape or a developed angle configuration.
  • Corner thresholds, among which the most reliable is aluminum, trim the outer corners of the steps. The sills come in a variety of lengths, widths and colors, making it easy to choose the right option. Most often, they have a perforated surface, which provides better grip with shoes and does not allow a person to slip on the steps.

  • Flexible thresholds are made from hypoallergenic and safe plastic, which becomes elastic under the influence of high temperatures, and after cooling it hardens, acquiring the desired configuration. This material is quite strong and resistant to mechanical stress, has moisture-proof qualities. Such thresholds cover the joints and mask the differences in flooring. They are used to wrap around columns, pedestals and podiums, to decorate niches in walls and arches, to protect the most vulnerable places from moisture.
  • T-shaped universal thresholds have different widths, colors, good flexibility, which will allow you to create radius transitions between coatings, and concealed installation of profiles, they are completely smooth and almost imperceptible under your feet.
  • Open fasteners are most often made of metal, less often of plastic. They suggest the presence of holes for attaching the profile to the floor surface, which are drilled every 15 cm and have a cone shape so that the screw heads do not protrude above the smooth surface of the threshold and do not cause discomfort to the legs. Even a beginner in repair can handle the installation.
  • Thresholds with hidden fastening are plates or corners without holes for screws, their fastening system is hidden under the threshold itself, it independently adjusts to a possible difference if it does not exceed 15 mm.

  • The latest notion is the anti-threshold, guillotine or "smart threshold", which is an aluminum profile in the shape of the letter P with a spring device and a rubber seal inserted into the end of the door block from below so that it is not visible when the door is open. At this time, he is drowned inside the canvas. When the door is opened, the guillotine automatically falls silently down and closes the gap between the floor and the door. This design provides sound and heat insulation, lack of drafts, self-leveling on uneven floors. In addition, the threshold does not interfere with free movement around the room, its design is safe and convenient to use and install, affordable, and can be used in combination with any doors. The guillotine is not suitable for hollow doors, since it needs to be cut to a depth of at least 20 mm, and additional carpentry for installation is perhaps the only drawback.

Dismantling floor thresholds

  • Before laying a new coating on the floor surface and hiding its joints under the threshold, you should disassemble the old thresholds.
  • For this procedure, you will need to use a crowbar, hammer and hacksaw. First of all, you need to saw off the edges of the threshold and knock out its middle. The work must be done very carefully, otherwise there is a risk of damaging the door leaf - it may squint.
  • The remains of the old threshold are loosened by bringing a crowbar under them. If necessary, scrap is driven deeper with a hammer. Loose pieces of the nut are easily removed from under the door frame.

Do-it-yourself installation of interior thresholds

There are several ways to fasten interior thresholds. But they all start with an accurate measurement of the length of the joint that needs to be covered. After that, the obtained value is marked on the nut and the excess is cut off with a grinder or a hacksaw.

  • Installation of thresholds with open fastening quite simple to implement. For this, profiles with existing holes drilled at the same distance are used. It is necessary to attach the threshold to the floor and mark the places where the screws will be inserted. Drill holes according to the marking of the required size, attach the threshold and fix it with screws. It is important not to make holes too large, otherwise the screws will loosen over time and fall out. If the gap between the coatings is wide, it is closed with a suitable threshold. Self-tapping screws with decorative caps will not stand out too much against the background of the profile.

In the event that the joint of two floor coverings is at different levels (from 3 mm to 2 cm), you can use a wide threshold, which is attached at an angle, or a transitional (multi-level) profile.

  • For aesthetic reasons, consumers are much more likely to choose interior thresholds with a hidden fixing system. These can be strips with internal floating holes for self-tapping screws or a special profile, which consists of two parts: a T-shaped nut and a rail.

  • To attach the plank, you must first drill holes in the floor according to the markings and insert plastic dowels into them. Self-tapping screws for hats are carefully threaded into holes on the bar, after which it is turned over so that the fasteners fall into the dowels. You need to press a little on the bar and fix it by lightly tapping it through a layer of paper with a hammer.
  • To fix the T-shaped nut, the required number of holes are also drilled in the floor, into which dowels are inserted, after which the bar is attached to the floor with self-tapping screws, and the upper decorative profile is glued or snapped on top.

  • Greater attention must be paid to installation thresholds in the bathroom, since most often the floor in this room is tiled. On sale there are special thresholds for such a finishing material, they do not allow moisture to penetrate into neighboring rooms. Also a great option would be to use a guillotine threshold.
  • to install interior door threshold on concrete floor, you will need a puncher to drill holes for the dowels. First, markings are also applied to the floor, after which the final installation of the threshold is performed by tightening with self-tapping screws.

In addition to aesthetic, decorative interior sills also carry a functional load. The installation of interior thresholds not only gives the floor a finished look, but also prevents the accumulation of dirt and moisture butt-to-butt between the coatings, and also protects the edges of linoleum and carpet from bending and fraying.
