Ideas and principles for creating unusual indoor gardens: selection of plants and pots. Houseplants

For lovers of indoor plants who are tired of the monotony, there is a variety option. Indoor gardens are a combination of beauty, originality, fantasy. This article reveals the basic principles for the selection of plants, depending on their location. Ideas for creating mini-compositions are described, plant species that grow well in the proposed containers are proposed.

Plant selection principles

Given the basic rules of phytodesign, we can distinguish the following criteria for the selection of plants:

  • The size of indoor plants should match the size of the room. If the room is large, then small flowers will not be noticeable, and in a small room, large flowers and pots will further reduce the visual space.
  • When choosing a pot, you need to know what composition will be placed in it. If the pot does not match the number of plants, then the results will be disastrous. With excessive space, some types of plants may die, while others will spread into ugly forms. But in cramped quarters - a fight for survival will begin, the strongest will win.
  • In the far corner of the container, when forming the composition, you need to put the plants higher, in the foreground - lower, weaving plants or ampelous.
  • When buying plants, you need to inspect them and make sure that they are healthy: no damaged root system, no strange formations and damage on the leaves.
  • When compiling a composition, you need to know the conditions for keeping all plants. You can not combine plants that love the sun, and shade-loving. Also, it is worth considering temperature regime, selected colors, relation to moisture. If this is not taken into account, they will not get along together.
  • When combining plants with a large root system and a small one, it is better to put flowers in a large pot in their respective pots, and cover with a ball of turf, moss or peat on top. And if desired, change one color for another.

miniature gardens

These funny little compositions will dispel sadness and tension just by looking at them. Many options with different small plants have been invented to create indoor mini-gardens:

  • Gardens in cups. These little masterpieces are made according to the general principle of planting. You need to pick up flowers undersized, miniature. Suitable for such compositions: Fittonia, Spathiphyllum Wallis, miniature phalinopsis, asparagus, pressed pilea, saline, confused Mühlenbeckia, legless selaginella.

  • Gardens in stones. Compositions of plants that are planted in stones instead of pots look unusual and original. Suitable for such purposes rocks stones in which there are many pores, they are airy and light. You can take limestone, sandstone. These stones are relatively easy to give desired shape. To plant plants in them, you need to drill or gouge a recess (or several) inside, fill in the substrate and plant the plants. That's all. You can put it on a table, window sill, shelf - wherever you want, if only the plants feel good. That's just the plants must be selected correctly - not everyone will grow in such an unusual pot. If the stone is not large, the recesses are small, then they will do: young, stonecrop, lithops. Small cacti and saxifrage will also work. And if the sizes are a little larger, then you can take cyclamen, kotula, gerbil and the same succulents.

  • Orchards in bottles (glasses). These small compositions in a small glass container are perfect for the kitchen, living room or office. It is not difficult to make such compositions, except that it is inconvenient to place plants in a bottle. For such gardens, flowers are selected that grow slowly, do not require much care, do not need frequent watering and irrigation. Do not forget about the drainage layer - it is required. Such plants are suitable: undersized, dwarf succulents and cacti, miniature violets, mosses, dwarf ferns, fittonia, soleirolia, legless selaginella.

  • Shell gardens. Such small compositions touch with their simplicity and diminutiveness. Looks great on several pieces at once. Shell sizes may vary. Plants are planted with a small root system, slowly growing. You can take curly or ampel, then the compositions can be hung near the window. Such flowers are suitable: stonecrop, saline, young dwarf, mühlenbeckia, legless selaginella.

Shell flower arrangement

In addition to these miniature gardens, you can decorate compositions in an original way by using some natural materials in the form of pots.

For these purposes, suitable coconut shell, without pulp. Make several drainage holes, fill in the necessary soil mixture, plant a flower or composition. This flowerpot looks good both on the windowsill and hanging. You can plant different flowers, guided by the size of the pot and the needs of the flower itself. Orchids feel good in such flowerpots.

Hanging pot from coconut

Making such pots from stumps will take time, because you need to hollow out a decent recess inside, make drainage holes. But the result will be great: by combining the number of flowerpot stumps or the number of plants in one stump, you can get original and environmentally friendly compositions.

Flower arrangement in a stump

Thus, creating flower gardens, you can dispel everyday melancholy and monotony. A large number of proposed options will help to realize original ideas in beautiful compositions.

A flower pot, box or hanging basket for flowers can be made by a FORUMHOUSE forum member from anything, it's just not difficult. The main thing is to create a work of art in this pot later. Now the flower growers of our portal show like-minded people homemade compositions of flowers in pots in photographs and comprehend the experience of the outgoing season: what worked, what didn’t work, which plants fascinated, which ones - on the contrary.

Svetlana Agrostemma all summer she fought for her plants with the "hell heat", and the heat won.

Agrostemma:

- That's it, I'm switching to succulents. At the very least, Echeveria humpbacked flower in a pot is the only plant that has survived our hellish heat without any problems.

The diameter of the planter is 35 cm, and the size of the largest rosette is 18 cm! "Blooming" can hardly be called plentiful, but "roses" are always in one pore.

Some flower growers complain about an unsuccessful acquaintance with Torenia - they were not impressed.

Klever :

- While standing at home, in a box, it bloomed profusely, but by the time of planting it had already grown and bloomed less. I planted her in the ground, and there she quickly died.

ChamomileLuLuRo:
- My Ducheska did not please me very much, I planted it for the first time, I expected more. Painful, no expected hat. I planted three in a flowerpot, some have already flown out.

Sophiko I found for myself a new ideal plant - heliotrope.

- It is something! All summer it blooms non-stop, this heat in Moscow endured elementarily, it is quite reconciled with power outages ... well, in short, I’m not overjoyed.

Campanula met a great love: Tradescantia. Beautiful, unpretentious, grow like crazy, able to decorate garden and indoor flower arrangements.

-In 20 liters, but I won’t say exactly how many pieces there are ... Well, maybe 8-10 pieces, approximately :).

Elenka02 fascinated by nemesia.

Poerty nemesia seeds were purchased (two colors were presented: white and blue. I grew white). Recommended for potted mixes. In this photo, nemesia is adjacent to pelargonium.

Compositions of flowers in pots.

Many incredibly liked Ipomoea sweet potato for its high decorative qualities - a vegetable, strictly speaking, culture, its tubers are eaten in tropical countries. We have this species bred for beauty, it is really very good. winter for her better at home, as part of a composition of indoor plants.

shmiz:

- Nothing special: I bought cuttings in the spring and planted them. Excellent and takes root very quickly in water. Their greenery is very good. I especially like this one - red. I really don’t know how he will winter and whether he will winter, but I will try very hard - a good plant!

But these mixes from different plants Tatusi cause complete admiration in all who see them.

Tatusya:

- I'll show you the pots. In the first photo, the papaya was trimmed literally under a stump, it sat solo before, then I had to transplant it into a larger pot and pick up comrades for it; I blinded her from what was.

Flower arrangement in a pot, photo.

Siberian shmiz also successfully experimented with creating mixes from several different house colors:

shmiz:

- brachycoma + yellow calibrachoa + yellow petunia (Duckling), 30 liters

- Petunia African Sunset + Syrfinia Table Dark Red.

Table Ametist Eye + Table White, 30 liters.

Konstantin liked the warm red African, and he is thinking of creating new mixes with her participation on next year. And the composition with the red Table turned out to be the brightest and most attracting the attention of the guests.

This season, almost all compositions from home flowers were grown by members of the forum in various sachets and baskets. I even managed to successfully use bags of sugar.

Frost:

- This is a bag, or, one might say, a bag, they sell sugar in them. And it is arranged like this: you pour the earth in stages, make a slot in right place, insert a plant into this slot, again pour the earth to the place where the next slot will be, and so on to the very top. It turned out a little different from what was intended, it was necessary to make cuts more often, then during flowering the bag would not be visible. It should be like this.

Chamomile LuLuRo decorates his flower pots burlap:

ChamomileLuLuRo:

- I put a regular jute bag on an ordinary aluminum flask, tied it up hu at the throat with jute twine. It turned out interesting.

Shmiz
this year for the first time I grew flowers in a sachet (volume 6-7 liters, 7-8 bushes planted) - it turned out that it was very cool, in next year he will have more such compositions. You need to water the flowers in a sachet using the immersion method (otherwise, do not spill the earthen ball, the water drains).

Shmiz :

- I completely drown the sachet in the barrel for 30 seconds and hang it back. Sachet volume 6-7 liters, planted 7-8 bushes.

The material from which this "bag" is made does not let water through, so the wall on which it hangs is always dry. Excess water flows down the bottom corners. Violas from the Freefol series (Cream, Golden Yellow and Deep Violet) bloom in the sachet in the photo.

Shmiz :
-Sowed seedlings on March 5th. So far, everything is in bloom and the decorations have not been lost. These violas have a very pleasant subtle smell (sweet aroma).

It seems that viola is in the lead in the rating of our members of the forum - literally everyone grows them. Still: the plant continuously blooms from early spring and is not going to fade yet. As he says f rosik , « inthere are never too many violas in our climate.”

Veronicus:

-I won’t get tired of directly praising the Penny variety, it seems to me that it is simply amazing - fluffy koloboks with flowers.

Viola is also good in flower beds, and so much so that it makes a splash.

Svetlana:

- This year I didn’t manage to plant an ampelous viola in a flower pot. I stuck it in the garden, which I do not regret, it would have withered in a pot, since I don’t often visit a house in the village.

And in the garden she survived the frost, blooms and smells.

Naslund:

- Penny! Amazing bloom! This cold summer, when nothing was blooming, they made a splash in the flower bed! And the Matrixes are blooming gorgeous! All the neighbors are delighted. I really want more different viols, I look forward to new products!

For those who want to sow viola seeds now, in August, consultant Lobelia reminds: a lot depends on what kind of plants will go into the winter: small, from thickened crops, or grown and strong.

Lobelia:

- Usually, the August planting of viols begins to bloom from mid-June and blooms well until August, then the violas begin to grow gradually, without top dressing, the flowers may become smaller.

Lobelia also believes that the viola is not suitable for the role of a flower that lives indoors on the windowsill.

Lobelia:

- My conclusion is that they need a lot of land, an ordinary pot is only suitable for small-flowered varieties, and then a short time because the plants will stretch and the flowers will shrink.

Violas bloom, and do not even think to fade away - and flower growers think that the flowers will last another month. In the meantime, plots, window sills and balconies FORUMHOUSE users decorate garden mixes and compositions of indoor plants, summer continues.

On FORUMHOUSE you can look at any members of the forum and show yours, find everything you wanted to know about, as well as. Ours talks about, and the video about overexposure of freshly bought flowers before planting in the ground.

Houseplants important element interior, although we are not accustomed to perceive them this way, it is true: indoor plants are very eye-catching, and if flowers grow in your house, you can be sure that they will play a role in how your home will be remembered. Your home.

Understanding perfectly well that indoor plants are living beings, which cannot be treated as things, I nevertheless propose today to talk about how to decorate a house with the help of indoor plants, how to make them not just a source of joy and trouble, but also a full-fledged decorative element.

This article is intended for experienced flower growers, who no longer have difficulties with growing indoor plants and have only a question: how now to arrange all this splendor so that it is beautiful?

If you have a lot of indoor plants, you probably wondered how to make a beautiful arrangement of them. And if you are just starting to grow indoor plants, then try asking this question in advance 🙂

So, this article is about how to make beautiful compositions from indoor plants.

There will be a lot of non-professional photos here, because I want to show you not only design work with indoor plants, but also ordinary interiors.

All flower growers want to do something like in the photo on the left. But instead, it often turns out like in the photo below:

Or do you want to do as in this photo:

And it turns out like this:

Therefore, it is important to learn how to distribute indoor plants around the room.

The houseplants in the photo above are well-distributed throughout the room (it's a terrace, but organized like a living room). In this example, you can see almost all the ways to properly arrange indoor plants: 1) decorated corners 2) a beautiful bouquet / flower in a pot in the center of attention (here it is Coffee table ik) 3) decorated window sills 4) shelves with flower pots.

Consider all the ways and start with decorating the corners. Pay attention to how the left corner is decorated in the photo above. In the background is the largest plant, in front of it is smaller, in front of it is even smaller. It turns out a magnificent “ladder”, each element of which is clearly visible. The same is in the lower right corner of the picture.

When indoor plants are placed in a corner, it is best to put them on the principle of “highest in the background, lower closer, lowest in the foreground”.

It is undesirable that indoor plants in the corner vary greatly in height:

Too much small plant next to the big one looks a bit pathetic. It is better when the smaller plant reaches at least the middle of the larger one.

It is desirable that the plants in the foreground be more magnificent and thicker:

Compare the photo above and the photo below:

If you don’t have tall indoor plants, but you want to make a lush corner, use flower stands or whatnots, creating a composition of plants on them:

Indoor plants on racks (or other vertical elements: bedside tables, whatnots, etc.) are best combined according to the principle: “big down, small up.” It is good when the lower plants are so lush that they cover the entire bottom of the flower stand. It is very good when there is a flowering plant at the very top of the flower stand.

It is undesirable when the most magnificent plant is higher and closer than others. In the photo on the right you see an example - the most lush plant loses a beautiful flower bush in the background.

This general principles how to put indoor plants in the corner.

Now, from the corners, let's move on to the focal points of the room. The focal point of a room is the point in the room that is most easily noticed when entering the room and is often looked at while in the room. No, it's not a TV 🙂

The focal point of a room relates directly to the interior and remains so with or without a TV.

Most often, the center of attention of the living room is a sofa with a coffee table or a rack opposite the sofa, the center of attention of the kitchen is the dining table, the center of attention of the hallway is a place opposite the entrance or right at the entrance. Quite often the center of attention various premises is a window.

So, decorating the center of attention with the most beautiful and healthy plant is a great idea.

Houseplant for the center of attention must be chosen correctly. It is best if it is flowering or variegated. At the same time, it is undesirable to put a more lush plant on the same line of sight - in the photo below you see a very eloquent example.

Here on coffee table(a natural center of attention in the living room) they put a beautiful and lush variegated plant, and everything would be fine, but they put an even more beautiful and lush plant on the fireplace. As a result, both objects attract the eye, resulting in unnecessary competition, since the more lush plant is also located higher. Mentally move it to the bedside table next to the fireplace, where the green bust is now standing, and the picture will immediately change for the better.

The foregoing, however, does not mean that the houseplant in the spotlight should be the largest. On a coffee table, on a shelving unit, on a TV stand, on a dining table, an object that is too large is simply out of place:

Note that although there are many houseplants here, the mantelpiece is completely empty - two small pots that are on the coffee table would be there, and it would be nice. A palm tree table, of course, is great. And here good example:

In the photo above, however, not a houseplant in a pot, but a bouquet in a vase, but the principle of dimension is the same - this interior is exactly the size of the plant in the center of attention and is shown, no more, no less. Here is another good example in the photo below:

Bonsai is proportionate dining table and looks neat.

What can not be said about the dining table in the photo on the left. It can be seen that the owners love flowers, and their flowers live well, and in general everything is with a soul. But still, these dinner table plants are obviously great.

In addition, it is very important - if you put a houseplant on a dining or coffee table, the pot should be beautiful, and the ground should not be visible. Well, it's unpleasant to eat when the land is nearby.

Indoor plants in the spotlight should be properly decorated - a beautiful flower pot, a neat pallet, if necessary, and be sure to cover the ground with decorative sand or grass. Otherwise, the table will look sloppy.

A beautifully flowering or variegated plant, lush, but not too tall, or a composition of them in one pot is ideal. When the stems of a plant are crowded in a pot so that the earth is not visible at all, it is much more beautiful.

If you are still afraid to plant several different plants in one pot, but you want to compose a composition, combine plants with different color leaves and different heights, and pick pots of the same color:

In the photo above, you see that the earth in pots is covered with decorative tow.

If the composition of different plants is still too complicated for you, put two or three identical plants in the same pots - this is an absolutely win-win option.

It looks good when the houseplant pot is combined with matching elements in the center of attention. In the photo on the left you see a good primer - a dish with cones and some kind of shell or tree fungus (indiscernible) were added to the brutal gray pot, and a large coral flower in a smaller pot gives the brightness of this whole “earthy” composition.

Such compositions of indoor plants and various accessories in the spotlight are very decorative, very individualizing the interior, just make sure that they do not take up too much space.

On this we will finish with the centers of attention and move on to the window sills.

There are a lot of ways to decorate window sills with indoor plants, and I will devote a separate article to them, but here I will give only some general principles in the context of decorating the entire room with flowers as a whole. What you need to know so that a window sill with flowers harmoniously decorates your interior?

If your window is not the focal point of the room and you don't want to make it one, but just want to decorate it in a way that blends in and doesn't compete with the rest of the plants in the room, put it on your windowsill. small plants in small pots at about the same distance from each other, as in the photo above and the photo on the right.

Mathematical accuracy of symmetry is not necessary - if you like it, put the plants symmetrically and in the same pots; if you don't like it, leave it different plants in different pots, but make sure that the pots are combined with each other (more on this here), and the plants themselves do not differ much in height.

The diametrically opposite case is if your window is the center of attention of the room or you want to make it so. Unlike “natural” focal points like a coffee table or shelving unit, a window sill can be completely lined with flowers without the fear of having nowhere to put a book. (True, the convenience of opening the window is still better to keep.)

Making the window the center of attention, put on it the most beautiful and lush plants so that they form a "foam" of flowers. It is very good if your flowering plants are matched by color. There are several win-win color combinations: 1) pink, burgundy, light lilac 2) red, yellow, white 3) lilac, blue, dark purple, yellow, white 4) orange, yellow, white, maroon. Combining colors is a lot of fun, and I'm sure you'll find a few of your own.

If you don’t have lush flowers, but only small pots, it’s better not to distribute them along the windowsill in one long undersized row, but to put them on a two- or three-story bookcase (or even a fruit bowl), as in the photo on the right. When the little flowers are stacked like this, they look prettier.

No matter how many plants you have, don't overload the window by stacking lots of pots on or against it. Between a window richly decorated with flowers and an overloaded and messy window, the difference is very large, and the line is too thin. There are many examples of overloaded windows, and here I decided to give only the most stupid of them. In the photo on the left you see just an apotheosis. But even without going to such extremes, remember that flowers should not completely block the window if it is alone in the room.

Let's finish this for now with window sills and move on to shelves, racks, chests of drawers and other pieces of furniture on which you can put indoor plants.

The main rule in arranging colors on the shelves is proportionality to each other and the shelf itself. In the photo above, you can see that the plants on the shelf are not chosen very well - one is noticeably larger than the others, and next to it there is not half the size to reduce the contrast with the small ones (although this does not spoil this cute interior). And in the photo on the right, the plants on the shelf (it is also a house for a cat) are matched in proportion to each other and form a pleasant “flower bed”.

In the photo below you see how good it is when plants of the same size are in the same pots, and even under the style of the whole interior, a kind of romantic vintage.

But “proportionality” does not mean “unidimensionality”. Plants on the shelves can be different sizes, it’s just that they should not differ greatly in height and volume (splendor), so that the lush ones do not suppress the small ones. The photo below is a good example.

Here, the houseplants are of different sizes, and differ significantly, but the composition is still good, since they are all quite lush and do not clog each other. The only thing is that it would be better to increase the distance between them so that each of them is clearly visible and that the middle plant is not blocked by the extreme ones.

In addition, plants should be proportionate not only to each other, but also to the actual shelf / piece of furniture on which they stand. Look at the photo below.

The indoor plants in the photo above look sloppy, they are too heaped up, they almost fall off the edge, I am silent about the pots, and most importantly, despite the fact that the ceiling in the room is high, they are still too big for this table.

And here is a good example in the photo on the left. Houseplants on this shelf are proportionate to each other, to the shelf itself, and to the accessories on the shelf - very good, simple and tasteful.

True, I would change their places, since the hard leaves of the lower plant already rest against the shelf, and the upper one still has room to grow, but maybe that's how it should be.

The photos below are also good examples.

Plants can not only be arranged on the shelves, but also hung. There are many ways to hang (there will be a separate article about them), but for now I just want to show you these funny examples - don’t just ask me where the water from the pots drains, I hope the owners have provided for this 🙂

Of course, there are a lot of subtleties in the arrangement of indoor plants (as well as other accessories) in the interior, and you yourself see that it is impossible to tell about everything within the framework of one article. I have outlined here the most basic, the basic level, based on which you can decorate your home with flowers and avoid gross mistakes. And now a few little tricks.

For a composition from flowering plants select plants from different shades foliage. When there is too much of one green tint, monotony occurs:

Plants with different shades of foliage look more dynamic:

It is good when among non-flowering plants there is one magnificently flowering one:

A good way to decorate a room with flowers for a beginner grower is to take two identical plants in identical pots, put one on the windowsill and the other in the center of the room, as in the photo on the left.

It will turn out to be a nice unobtrusive rhyme, and if you have few flowers and want them to play the maximum decorative role, this is a very good way.

The photo below is another trick for those who have few indoor plants and who want to draw maximum attention to them.

Put bright accessories next to your plants (ideally, if they rhyme with the flowers of the plant, as in these photos).

Make sure that the flowers do not form a visual mess. For this choose the right flower pots and saucers (do not use disposable plastic pots from flower shops), arrange them so that each plant individually can be seen. Keep cleanliness - crumbs and clods of earth around the pots, dry leaves, smudges of water from pallets - all this spoils the impression of the most beautiful flower arrangement.

Forget the conventional wisdom that to grow plants you need " light hand". Anyone can grow the most common species and make them attractive. But if you choose a delicate or capricious plant, then a "light hand" will not help you. Try to select plants that need approximately same lighting, watering and temperature control. And now we will talk about the location of indoor plants and compositions.

There are only a few rules for the location of plants. They must match the environment. large plants should be placed in spacious rooms, small on windowsills. spectacular plant can stand alone, but nondescript ones should always be grouped together. Borrow ideas from magazines, from television programs, from the homes of acquaintances, but above all, create compositions that give you pleasure.

Composition from potted plants is a collection of plants in pots placed close together to create the effect of a large patch of greenery (we all have this arrangement in our dressing rooms, you all thought about how to arrange them, tall plants in the back, lower ones in front, color scheme arranged).

indoor garden is a container filled with several plants. The pots in this arrangement are not visible - they can be hidden from view inside the container or the plants can be planted directly in the container, without pots.

Composition in a bowl is one of the simplest types indoor garden, for the creation of which several decorative leaves and one or two flowering plants are taken out of pots and transplanted into peat soil. Traditionally in such a garden vertically - growing plants are planted in the back of the bowl, a few compact bushy plants in the middle, and climbing plant ahead.

miniature garden. special kind indoor garden are landscape compositions reproducing a real garden in miniature. Paths, ponds, various figures, houses are used for decoration. (It is good to make such compositions for children to compose stories and fairy tales in speech development classes).

We talked about what compositions are, suggestions on how to design them, and now look at what containers are suitable for us. We will need two types of containers - a planter and a container, because they have a wide surface diameter.

You can also use completely different types of containers for planting in order to decorate the room.

Use a small knife or small shovel to dig small holes for the roots.

According to the selected or invented scheme, mark where you are going to place your plantings and decorative elements, and then start planting.

Only stones of various sizes and shapes can be used as decorative elements to create a rock garden or a stone miniature. Get creative to liven up and decorate your garden.

Thematic decorative elements

If you want to make a miniature in a certain theme, you need to use decorative elements that will match it.

The implementation of the decor, subject to a particular theme, creates a sense of cohesion, artistic and compositional integrity.

One popular theme is the Fairy Garden theme, which features mini benches, mini rocking chairs, and mini garden gnomes.

Another popular theme is the fairy forest with the castle of the prince and princess. Here you can arrange a castle with windows overlooking a miniature garden.

You can also create the look of a simple forest garden using small tree stump shapes, mini wrought iron fences and small figurines.

Creation of stone paths

You can use small stones or a mixture of stones and marbles, or even pieces of colored glass to create a walkway.
Use a small shovel to mark where the path will go. Then lay out the stones according to the marks.

Tiles/pebbles for the path can be located either close to each other or at a certain distance from each other (the main thing is that the distance between them is the same or obeys some kind of mathematical logic so that the visibility of the path is not lost).

Mini garden care

A few important care items:

  1. Keep your artwork in a place with the best lighting conditions, according to the plants planted in the garden. If you choose a window seat, avoid windows facing north. Usually plants do not get enough light through them.
  2. Water your plants promptly and regularly. You should always check the soil in your mini garden periodically to make sure it is not too dry. Depending on the types of plants, you may need to water some of them more often than others. For example, if your mini garden has any succulents (plants that have special tissues to store water), they may not require as much watering as herbs or other plantings. Make sure you follow the watering guidelines recommended for each individual "inhabitant" of your garden.
  3. Trim plants as needed. As your miniature garden grows and flourishes, the leaves of some plants may start to overflow your pot. To keep them under control, you should trim them using small gardening shears.
