Do-it-yourself snowplow: step by step instructions. Homemade snow blower from a walk-behind tractor engine Homemade snow blower with your own hands

11435 03/26/2019 6 min.

The mechanization of the process of snow removal was invented almost 150 years ago, when a machine for cleaning snow was patented. railway tracks from snow drifts. Special units allow you to remove snow faster and in larger volumes than by hand with a traditional shovel.

Imported mini snowplows are widely represented on the market. But Russian craftsmen easily create their own, quite workable options. After studying them, we will figure out how to make a snowplow with your own hands.

Homemade snowplows for the home have the same operating principle as the factory Husqvarna, forte qi jy 50, cmi 163, snow fox sf16353l. They capture and move snow with the help of a large horizontally fixed screw (auger).

The auger blades are driven through a bearing-rotating axle (drive shaft) that transmits torque from the engine.

When the unit moves forward, a wide bucket, like a funnel, picks up snow masses and directs them through the conveyor screws. The angled propeller blades rotate to break up the snow and push it further towards a mechanically driven pump that pushes the snow out of the discharge hatch.

Necessary materials

In preparation for work, we will need:

  • blueprints;
  • tools: keys, screwdrivers, a file and a hammer, a vice and pliers, a drill, a grinder, welding machine and, perhaps, lathe. In addition, you will need chains, sprockets, bushings, bearings, bolts with nuts.

Also needed materials:

  • Sheet steel or roofing iron.
  • Steel corner 50x50 mm.
  • Plywood, 10 mm thick.
  • Pipes ¾ and ½ inches.
  • 1.5 meters of conveyor belt (if not available, we replace tires with sidewalls).
  • Engine. Motoblock, it is also an internal combustion engine (runs on gasoline), or an electric motor. The electric motor needs a cable designed for use at sub-zero temperatures, and high-quality waterproofing.
  • To avoid a short circuit from the ingress of melted snow, you can cover the electric motor, for example, with a 5-liter plastic bottle cut along.

Device and circuit

Snow blower device quite simple and based on a supporting frame. An engine, a snow-capturing bucket, and handles are mounted on it.

The main working part is the auger, which, while rotating, collects and moves snow to the impeller, where the snow mass is captured by the blades and fed first into the mechanism cavity, and then into the exhaust pipe.

Scheme of a homemade snow blower clearly demonstrates the device of the unit.

The simplest snow blower - single-stage. Capturing and discarding snow from Champion 656, lux 163, Patriot snow blowers is carried out only by a rotating auger. In two-stage designs, the auger is supplemented with a metal plate-blade (rotor), attached in the middle of the drive shaft.

For more information about the rotary snow blower, see the video:

This design is used for cleaning large volumes of snow and ensures its ejection at a distance of up to 12 m.

Engine power determines the type of snow blower:

  • Manual, mechanical. Engine with a capacity of 2.5-5 hp actuates the working parts, and the advancement of the unit is due to the user-applied physical strength. Do-it-yourself mechanical snow blower is the easiest to make.
  • It is curious that a “mechanical snow blower” is also called a plastic shovel with a handle in the form of a metal bracket, equipped with reinforcing ribs on the reverse side, with a rotating auger attached to the front side.
  • If you keep the correct tilt of the shovel so that the auger does not hang in the air, but rather rotates, this version of the “motor shovel” without an engine is very effective for cleaning uncompacted snow (up to 10 cm) in small areas, especially in hard-to-reach places.
  • Self-propelled. A sufficiently powerful engine, from 10 hp, ensures the operation of the equipment and the movement of wheels or tracks.

When loaded in deep snow caterpillar is preferable. A do-it-yourself snow blower on a caterpillar track is easy to make from a caterpillar radio-controlled children's car. A mini tractor on a caterpillar track is also suitable.

Such a design can be equipped with headlights, a webcam and controlled remotely (remote control). Snowplow mini-equipment on caterpillar tracks is considered the most productive.

2. Welded hull made of sheet steel reinforced with spars from the corners, and an additional side. It joins with the base all-terrain vehicle with two carriers welded to the screw bed.

The screw mechanism consists of 2 tapes(oppositely directed Archimedes screws, welded to protruding M6 studs). A motorcycle chain is stretched between the sprockets of the auger and the shaft.

The drive shaft is made using sprockets and bearings removed from agricultural machinery, secured with dowels and pins.

From below, wheels or skids (skis) are attached to the base frame. Suitable wheels can be taken from an old cart, and the skids will serve wooden bars reinforced with plastic box.

5. To the prepared base mount the engine.

6. Bucket, drive shaft, auger:

  • The body of the bucket is made of sheet iron, supplementing it with plywood sidewalls. With a bucket width of more than 50 cm, a larger engine will be needed. At 50 cm, a power of 6.5 hp is quite suitable.
  • The drive shaft is made from a ¾ inch pipe. We fasten the rotor (120 × 270 mm) in the through cut in the middle of the pipe. We weld corners 25 × 25 mm perpendicular to it. (two on both sides) and make a groove for the key under the sprocket on one side of the pipe.
  • The diameter of the pipe, so that it enters the bearings 205, is reduced by two additional cuts.
  • The bearings are taken from a KART car. But you can use any closed ones (so that snow does not get in), for example, a cardan support from a Zhiguli.
  • The transmission belt connects the shaft and the motor.
  • The auger blades are cut out of a conveyor belt (4 rings, each 28 cm in diameter) or sheet steel (4 discs, each cut in half and bent in a spiral).
  • We use a chain or belt as a drive.

7. Main body is manufactured made of sheet iron or 2mm steel.

8. The part for ejection of snow fixed on the auger body is made of plastic parts. sewer pipes with a diameter of 160 mm., dressed one on top of the other and supplemented with a gutter. The width of the rotor blade must necessarily be less than the diameter of the ejection chute.

9. For greater effect paint the finished model.

  1. It is better to place the gas tank on top, and its volume is not recommended to be made more than 2.5 liters.
  2. Walk-behind tractors not intended for winter operation are filled with synthetic oil.
  3. Solid particles thrown together with snow (branches, stones), ricocheting, can injure others. Use safety goggles when working with a snow blower, and do not wear loose clothing, the edges of which can get caught in the moving parts of the machine.
  4. To prevent the engine from jamming due to the ingress of large foreign objects, the screws and the rotor are attached to the drive shaft with shear bolts and bushings. Under excessive loads, these “fuses” will break, and the engine will remain intact.
  5. Do not open the fuel tank, do not refuel the equipment with a hot engine, let it cool down for a couple of minutes. It is recommended to take a break every half an hour to an hour in order to avoid overheating of the engine.

Some people buy factory-made equipment because of the warranty and service provided for it. Others appreciate the physical pleasure of working with a traditional shovel.

And those who like to design equipment on their own and have relevant experience in this field are quite capable build your own snow blower, armed with suitable instructions and expert advice.

With the onset of cold weather, snow removal becomes an urgent problem for many owners of suburban real estate. In the presence of a vast adjacent territory, the shovel does not The best decision and buying snowplows can be a very expensive purchase. A self-made snowplow will help out in this situation. This option is especially suitable for residents of suburban villages and summer cottages. Therefore, try to make a useful unit yourself from old tools. And our review will help you do this.

Snow removal equipment allows you to quickly and without special work clear away large areas adjoining territories

The snow blower is a universal equipment for automatic cleaning of snow embankments over large areas. A snow blower for home saves a lot of time and frees a person from hard work.

Homemade structures are suitable for clearing the surrounding areas of shops and cafes. Also, such equipment is used by public utilities and all kinds of enterprises.

How to make a snow blower auger

An important component of the snow blower is the auger. These are cutting rings-blades attached to the drive shaft. A pipe 80 cm long is suitable as a shaft. In the center, you need to cut a hole where a shovel will be placed to supply snow. Snow leans back, thanks to the rotation of this pipe.

In this case, you will need to make a friction ring for the snow blower with your own hands. In this case, it is worth using ready-made drawings, according to which rings can be cut. The blades are made from sheet steel. In this case, 4 disks are cut out, which are pulled out in the form of coils. Then the finished spirals are welded to the spiral. Metal spacers are fixed along the edges of the pipe. Below are the detailed steps to complete the work.

DIY snow blower from a chainsaw

It is worth noting the advantages of the chainsaw design:

  • low cost of elements;
  • remarkable performance of the equipment;
  • production of the main components from improvised means.

A chainsaw motor is used as a driving element. The engine is detached from the frame. In addition to the engine, you will need an auger body, a shaft and a helical surface of the auger. The body is made from sheet metal. For the shaft, you can take a pipe with a diameter of 20 mm. The helical surface is made of sheet iron.

You can start making the case from the sidewalls. In this case, two circles are cut out of the metal. A sheet of metal bent into a semicircle is welded to the side parts. Holes are made in the side parts where the screw mechanism is inserted. The frame is made by welding to the frame profile pipes. In this case, the power plant must move along the frame, and also be fixed in desired position. A handle with a remote throttle control is fixed to the frame part. Depending on the type of terrain, skids or wheels are attached to the frame.

How to make an electric snow blower from a trimmer with your own hands: video with explanations

You can also make a unit from a trimmer, but not any will do. Do not use a trimmer with a curved bar. More powerful are devices with a straight bar.

To make a unit from a trimmer, you will need a special tool - a grinder, a drill and.

Here is the sequence of work:

  • body is made from metal barrel, which is cut off at a distance of 15 cm from the bottom. A hole is made in the center where the protruding gearbox will be placed;
  • a hole is made on the sides;
  • the hole for the exit of snow should be located in the center of the structure;
  • to make a rotor you need 4 blades. In this case, 4 plates are cut out of a piece of metal, which should be cut in the shape of a blade. They need to be welded to the trimmer disc;
  • snow removal can be done from different parts barrels. To do this, cut a rectangular strip. The blank should be bent and welded on the side parts;
  • from sheet material a blade is made;
  • snow removal is done in the place where there is a hole for ejection of snow. The blade is attached at the bottom. The gearbox is bolted, and the rotor is mounted like a trimmer knife.

Getting Started independent work the following guidelines should be considered:

  • so that foreign objects do not get into the auger, bolts and safety bushings must be used;
  • when arranging a single-stage design, the chute must be placed on the side and top of the body.

How to make a similar design can be seen in the video below:

Also, the main stages of assembling a snow blower are clearly presented in the table below:

Making a rotary snow blower

For self-production of a rotary snow blower, you will need the following elements:

  • fuel tank;
  • throttle cable;
  • muffler motor.

To complete the work you will need. It is necessary to fit all the parts. It is worth considering the main stages of the snowplow device:

  • installation of a screw device;
  • rotor assembly;
  • body installation;
  • frame arrangement.

First, the nodes are made separately, and then assembled into a whole unit. The rotors are made from sheet metal. On the sheets it is necessary to draw circles with a compass. To make the blades, you need to take the part from electric motor. The blades are welded to a steel disk. To assemble the frame, you need to weld segments from a metal corner. All elements of the frame are fixed with bolted connections.

Article

Homemade snowblower has been very popular among summer residents and rural residents for many years. And this is not surprising, because every owner suburban area faces the problem of snow removal in winter.

Of course, this can be done manually, armed with a shovel, but it will take a lot of time and require physical effort.

Another option is to purchase a dedicated snowplow if available. But if there is no place in the plans for an extra purchase, then a do-it-yourself snow blower made with the help of an old tool with an engine that probably stale in every garage can help out. How to do this will be discussed in this article.

Did you know? The first snow blowers were invented in Canada. For the first time such a machine was patented by Robert Harris, a resident of the city of Dalhousie (New Brunswick) in 1870. Harris called his car the "Railway screw snow excavator" and used it to clear snow from railroad tracks.

Auger snow blower - what is it

In order to properly make a homemade snow blower with your own hands, it is necessary, first of all, to understand the design of its main mechanisms. Any snowplow consists of one main working element - this is an auger that is inside a welded metal case. The screw is a rod (shaft), along the longitudinal axis of which there is a continuous spiral surface. The shaft rotates on bearings and thus drives the spiral profile.

The principle of operation of the auger snow blower

According to the method of clearing snow, snowplows are divided into single-stage (screw) and two-stage (screw-rotor).

How a Single Stage Screw Machine Works

The principle of operation of a single-stage, or auger, snow blower is that raking, crushing and dumping snow occurs only due to the rotation of the auger. Moreover, there is a serrated and smooth working edge of the auger: smooth - for cleaning loose snow; notched - for hard, icy snow crust.

Screw machines, as a rule, are lighter than rotary screws and can only be non-self-propelled. These are the so-called shovels on wheels that need to be pushed forward, because of which they rake up the snow and throw it to the side. The snow auger is driven by an electric or gasoline engine (two-stroke or four-stroke). Such machines are good because they are quite easy to operate, compact and inexpensive.

The working principle of a two-stage machine

A two-stage, or auger, snow blower is designed a little differently. The first stage of its design involves raking snow with an auger; the second stage - ejection through the chute is carried out using a special rotor - the discharge impeller.

The auger in such models of rotary snow blowers is arranged according to the standard principle of a screw shaft, with a smooth or serrated edge. Augers can be metal steel or rubber, rubber-plastic, reinforced with steel, depending on whether the snow blower is manual or self-propelled.

The snow blower impeller of two-stage rotary augers has from three to six blades and can also be made of different material, depending on the intensity of the work that she will have to perform. It can be like plastic (for simple models), and metal (for a larger area of work).

DIY snow blower - where to start

To make your own snowplow with your own hands, you must first decide on the type of device, based on specific needs. You can assemble both a single-stage and a two-stage model. If you live in places where heavy snowfalls are rare, then an auger design machine will suffice. For those who live in a region with harsh, "generous" winters, you will need a two-stage auger snow blower.

Engine choice: electric or petrol

According to the type of engine, snow blowers are electric and gasoline. Machines with electric drive designed for work near the house and from outlets. Features of electric snowplows are that they are more economical in operation, but less maneuverable. Gasoline engines on snowblowers are considered more versatile, however, their price and maintenance costs are correspondingly higher. Therefore, the choice will again depend on what specific amount of tasks the snowplow needs to perform.

Important! If you have chosen the option of a homemade electric snow blower, then it is worth considering that a standard household electrical wire at sub-zero temperature air becomes brittle and loses elasticity. Therefore, it is recommended to use PGVKV, KG-KhL, SiHF-J or SiHF-O cords.

Installing the engine or using a walk-behind tractor

You can skip the engine selection stage if you decide to design a snow blower on a walk-behind tractor: the unit itself will play this role.

If the car is with a gasoline engine, then you should use an internal combustion engine, which can be taken from an old walk-behind tractor or lawn mower. A working power of 6.5 l / s will be enough. The design provides for the installation of the engine on a quick-detachable platform in order to facilitate its maintenance and repair if necessary. It is also recommended to manually start the engine, since installing a generator and battery will significantly increase the weight of the machine, which will make it less maneuverable and difficult to manage.

You can design a snowplow on an electric motor. In this case, remember that this option significantly limits the radius of the machine. In addition, electric motors are afraid of moisture, so they must install high-quality waterproofing.

How to make a snow blower with your own hands

The manual snow blower consists of such required elements:wheel frame (a control handle is attached to it), an engine, a fuel tank (if the machine is equipped with an internal combustion engine), a snow-capturing bucket or a shovel with guides (skis) and a snow discharge pipe. It is worth considering that the future snowplow is based on a light and durable platform at the same time.

How to make a snow blower from a walk-behind tractor

In winter, the walk-behind tractor can be used for snow removal. The easiest way to assemble a snow blower is with a special factory snow blower attachment. However, skilled craftsmen advise not to spend too much on a factory nozzle, but to assemble a snowplow for a walk-behind tractor with your own hands from the available materials and spare parts. There are three options for snow plow attachments to the walk-behind tractor.

First option - these are hard rotating brushes, which are well suited for recent snowfall, as well as for those places where there is a possibility of damage decorative coating sites. Such brushes are mounted under a canopy of a rotating auger; the width of their capture reaches 1 m. You can also adjust the angle of capture in three directions: forward, left, right.

The second version of the snow thrower for a walk-behind tractor - this is a hanging shovel with knives, suitable for already stale snow. Such a prefix is \u200b\u200battached to the traction device with a universal hitch. The lower part of the shovel is covered with rubber to avoid damage to the surface and the shovel itself. Such a snowplow works on the principle of a mini-bulldozer: it loosens a layer of snow, grabs it and moves it to a dump. The capture width at a time also reaches 1 m.

However, the most effective snowplow attachment to a walk-behind tractor is rotary snow thrower. The main structural elements of this nozzle are a conventional auger with a paddle wheel. As it rotates, it captures the snow, which is moved upwards with the help of a wheel. Passing through a special bell, the snow is thrown far beyond the site. This is the most productive version of the nozzle, allowing you to capture a mass of snow up to 25 cm thick.

Now consider step by step recommendations how to make snowplow motor blocks with a rotary type attachment with your own hands. The design is metal case with screw shaft inside. You can use a ready-made screw shaft or make it yourself.

So, bearings No. 203 are used to rotate the auger shaft. The auger housings are made of aluminum and are attached to the sides of the snow blower with bolts that must be tightened with nuts. The drum in which the rotor spins can be made from a 20-liter aluminum boiler: it must be attached to the front wall of the housing using rivets with a diameter of 4 mm.

The rotor for the snow blower is set in motion through a system of adapters by means of the rear power take-off shaft of the walk-behind tractor. If the snow blower head was purchased from ready-made, then such adapters are included with it. If the nozzle is made by hand, you need to purchase them additionally.

You also need to make a torque mechanism that would be transmitted from the walk-behind tractor to the snow blower. For this, the A-100 belt and the pulley intended for it are suitable. Thus, with the help of a V-belt connection, the torque is transmitted from the engine to the shaft of the walk-behind tractor connected to the shaft of the snowplow head.

Important! Bearings should be selected only closed ones, it is necessary to exclude snow from getting into them.

Do-it-yourself snowplow: making auger and frame

Let's now consider how to make an auger, a frame, as well as additional accessories necessary for a self-assembled snow blower.

To do this, you need to prepare:

  • sheet metal or iron box for the manufacture of the auger and its body;
  • steel corner 50x50 mm for the frame - 2 pcs.;
  • plywood 10 mm thick for side pieces;
  • metal pipe for snow blower handle (0.5 inch diameter);
  • ¾ inch tube for auger shaft.
To make a screw shaft, the pipe is sawn through. This is necessary to fix a metal shovel 120 by 270 mm, which is needed for throwing snow. Also, the pipe, in addition to the shovel, must be equipped with four rubber rings, 28 cm in diameter, which are cut out of the rubber base with a jigsaw.

Since the auger will rotate in #205 self-aligning bearings, these must also be placed on the pipe. A piece is suitable for discarding snow plastic pipe with a diameter of 160 mm, which is fixed on a pipe of the same diameter and placed directly on the screw body.

To make your own snow blower auger, you need:

  • cut 4 disks from prepared iron;
  • cut the discs in half and bend each into a spiral;
  • weld four disk blanks into a spiral on a pipe, on one side and on the other;
  • put bearings on the ends of the pipe.
The snowplow frame can be made from steel corners 50x50 mm by welding them to each other. A platform for the engine will subsequently be attached to this structure. From the bottom of the snowplow, it is necessary to adapt skis, the basis of which is wooden bars. These bars must be equipped with plastic overlays, which are made from a box from electrical wiring.

The machine is ready for operation.

In order for a self-made snowplow to serve as a reliable assistant in the household for as long as possible, you must adhere to some recommendations:

  • it will not be superfluous to add special safety bolts or bushings to the design of the machine in order to avoid fragments of ice or stones from entering the engine;
  • choose high-quality bearings, as they play an important role in the durability of the snow blower;
  • when choosing a drive, give preference to a belt drive rather than a rigid one, since there is a possibility that constantly moving parts can jam when stones or ice hit;
  • a snowplow from a walk-behind tractor requires storage in a warm place in winter time. This will eliminate the need to spend time warming up the engine;

The second year, winter pleases with an abundance of snow, but there is no strength to clean it. I go to the village on weekends, sometimes in a week it gets so heavy that I can’t even open the gate, and I have to drive a car, albeit a small one, into the yard. I climbed on the Internet, I wanted to buy, but the price of the simplest one with four strong engines is 22t.r. without wheel drive
A more or less normal snow blower from 37t.r. Paying that kind of money all summer, tripping over him in the garage? Of course you can buy heavy walk-behind tractor and a nozzle to it for snow removal will also cost under 50t.r., besides, I have a light walk-behind tractor without a power take-off shaft, but you can’t hang an auger on it.

I looked through the forums, maybe someone did it, I didn’t find simple ones either, so that without turning and complex machine work - from the trash, which the “home-made” ones have in their sheds.
Here's what I got: Shaft - a pipe ¾ in the middle of a through cut, inserted into it metal plate 120X270m.m. perpendicular to the plate to the pipe, closer to the edges, welded four corners 25X25mm. (two on each side). In order for the shaft to enter the bearings 205, he made two cuts and tapped it, thereby reducing the diameter of the shaft, on one side he made a groove for the key, under the sprocket.
I cut off the sidewall from the car tire, it turned out to be an auger.
The body of the snow blower was made of roofing iron, the sidewalls were made of 10mm plywood. Corner frame 50x50mm. garden cart wheels.

In general, everything can be seen from the photographs, in this design I was interested in the principle of whether a snow blower made according to such a scheme would work or not, without an impeller for ejecting snow. Tests showed that it works and throws snow, but it was strong wind, and the snow was dry and in five minutes I turned into a snowman, there was no one to shoot the video, but what I shot myself can be seen here:

From the jambs of the design, we can say that the wheels on the snow blower are not needed, even with a drive they slip, it is necessary to make one wide caterpillar, right behind the auger, it turned out to be not so easy to push it through the snow, let it drive itself. But that's next weekend.
The engine used 6.5l / s., from their snowmobiles

In the summer I chopped wood with it -

you can see here:

thanks to the quick-detachable design of the engine mount, installation and dismantling takes a couple of minutes. So, for Saturday and Sunday, I made such an assistant. Can, who easier did or saw? Tell.
