The right pillow for sleeping: how to choose the best one? How to choose the best pillow for sleeping.

Good evening, ladies. I present to your attention the announcement of the article: how to sleep on a pillow. Let's figure out how to sleep properly and how to choose the right pillow. Of course, the mattress must be chosen with skill, but about him -.
For the most part, people sleep completely wrong and thereby shorten their lives. Take a look at the image. This is what our cervical spine looks like when we are standing:

Red vessels are vertebral arteries that supply our brain with everything necessary for its vital activity.

When we, watching TV or reading a book before going to bed, fall asleep on a high pillow, then our cervical region assumes such a position, as indicated below.

In this position, the head bends forward, both vessels are squeezed and blood flow to the brain is reduced. Why is it dangerous? Over time, this becomes a problem for older people: this position leads to a stroke. The vast majority of ischemic strokes occur in the morning, when a person spent the night in the wrong position.

But we still sleep on our side. Let's see what happens when we lie on our side.

Take a closer look: one of the vessels is transferred. The conclusion suggests itself: in old age, a deplorable state of health and a short old age await you. And the worst thing is that we ourselves, voluntarily, take these postures and disrupt the blood flow. A natural question arises: how to sleep.

What pillow to sleep on

Let's start with the main thing - with the pillow. How many beautifully decorated square pillows we see in stores. They are called European. In our country, such pillows have been used for a long time and are sometimes called merchant pillows. These are large square pillows measuring 70x70.

But over time, our doctors, researching this topic, concluded that these pillows are very harmful to our spine and can lead to dangerous diseases in old age.

How to choose the right pillow

There is a basic rule, a simple rule: the pillow should support the neck: not the head, but the neck. I'll give an example of an image. Pay attention to the shape of the pillow: it is rectangular, i.e. represents half of a regular pillow. And yet, look at how the lower ends of the pillow are located. They are pulled up so that the shoulders do not lie on the pillow. The head is, as it were, in a nest.

The same position of the pillow should be when we sleep on our side.

The shoulders should not lie on the pillow, and the bottom edge of the pillow should be located exactly under the neck. This arrangement keeps the spine straight and does not interfere with the blood supply to the brain.

Many have seen in stores, the so-called orthopedic pillows. Doctors praise them, advise them, but there is one inconsistency in their explanations.

First, look at the pillow itself:

If you look at it from the side, you can see its shape. It consists of two rollers of unequal thickness and a dent between them. Doctors say this about rollers: if you sleep on your back, then you need to put a thinner roller under the back of your head, if you sleep on your side, then you need to put a thicker roller under your neck.

But allow me: at night, during sleep, we all repeatedly turn in bed. If we follow the recommendations of doctors, then with each change of position, we must unfold the pillow with one or the other edge under the spine. Imagine the night of such an obedient patient: in a dream he must remember that he needs to turn the pillow and, before changing his position, he jumps up, turns the pillow upside down and only then “flops” on it.

I bow for sim. Till.

To buy good pillow for sleep, you need to decide on the desired filler. They come in a variety of varieties, both natural and synthetic. A pillow for sleeping a child is most often chosen with stuffing made from natural materials. They are also good for people with allergies.

Pillows with which fillings are better to choose for a comfortable sleep

Among the materials of natural origin, we can mention fillers made of down and feathers, horsehair, sheep and camel wool. Although these materials have numerous advantages, people with asthma and allergies should use them with great care. It is best to purchase such products from manufacturers with a good reputation.

Hypoallergenic products made from natural materials are pillows stuffed with expensive natural silk, with plant materials - bamboo fiber, rice shells and corn fiber, buckwheat husks and herbs. Some of them have excellent massage and aromatherapy properties, are well ventilated, but sometimes short-lived.

  • There are other fillers of natural origin, such as cotton wool, natural latex, eucalyptus fiber, and so on.
  • Synthetic materials for stuffing pillows: holofiber, synthetic winterizer, comforter, silicone and others.

How to decide on the size

In modern stores, there are almost no pillows designed for sleeping in a bed with unusual shapes - the most common are square or rectangular. Rarely, but still there are pillows sized 60x60 cm. More common are products with dimensions 70x70 - square, 50x70 - elongated (oblong), as well as square non-standard - 40x40, 50x50.

Most often, modern manufacturers are guided by the so-called European standard - 50x70 cm, which is most common in Europe, especially in Spain and Italy. A lot of bedding sets are produced based on this size.

What to consider when choosing a pillow

Before searching handy accessory for sleep, try to answer the question - what does not suit you in those that you have used so far.

For example, if you notice that during sleep you now and then have a desire to put under the pillow own hand the product may have too low height for your physical needs. If you experience back pain and partial body numbness in the morning, the height of the accessory or the stiffness of the filler may not be suitable for you.

If you don't know how to choose a pillow for sleeping, try to identify and write down some of the main points.

  1. Measure the width of your shoulders. The height of a pillow for comfortable sleep should be approximately equal to the width of one.
  2. Consider the firmness of your mattress - the softer it is, the lower the product should be under your head.

What position do you prefer to take while sleeping? Those who try to sleep on their side should put something not very hard under their head. For those who like to sleep on their stomach, softer options are suitable. If you sleep on your back, it is better to choose accessories of medium hardness.

If you are going to buy a new pillow, you can study the reviews of the new products that have appeared and make a list of the preferred qualities of the product.

  • Try to test the accessory you like as much as possible. Try to wrinkle the pillow, lie down on it, make sure that the shape and height suit you. Pay attention to the quality of the seams.
  • The pillow cover should be made of high-quality cotton or natural silk. Ideal if it has a zipper. Then the height and rigidity of the product can be independently changed by removing excess filler. In addition, with convenient access to the packing, it can be periodically sanitized.
  • When buying pillows, do not hesitate to smell the product you like. There should be no unpleasant, sharp, repulsive odors. They may be evidence Bad quality raw materials.

Do not be upset if at first you will not be particularly comfortable sleeping on a new pillow. The body must adapt to the new sleep conditions. The first two or three nights you may not be very comfortable on the new bedding, but soon everything will be back to normal.

Sleep is an integral and important part of our life. Sleep problems can be detrimental to your health, so it's important to ensure that you fall asleep comfortably. An important role in this is played by the choice of pillow, because if it turns out to be wrong, complications with the spine may appear. The right choice of pillow, not only allows you to keep your back in order, but also makes it possible to enjoy a sound sleep, gaining strength in a dream.

A high-quality orthopedic pillow has one or more rollers, is made of elastic and safe material and is able to maintain its shape.

Thinking about which pillow is better to buy, you should give preference to one that will serve not only for sleeping, but will also be as useful as possible, that is, the pillow should be orthopedic. What does it mean? This is a pillow that allows you to maintain the neck in the correct condition, which means that it will be possible to avoid the unnatural position of the spine.

From ordinary pillows, the development of such an unpleasant disease as osteochondrosis is easily accelerated, or muscle spasm can occur. Types of pillows can be divided in shape and content. The shape can be in the form of a wave or a familiar rectangle. But the shape of the pillow does not play a big role, the filling of the pillow is much more important, and it can be different: buckwheat, latex, polyester, viscoelastic foam.

Selection criteria should include characteristics. For example, if a person has broad shoulders, then a higher pillow will be needed, as a rule, the width of the shoulders should match the height of the pillow. Also important is the position in which a person is used to sleeping. If you are more accustomed to basking on your side, then you can calculate the parameters of the necessary pillow. How to measure the shoulder length for an orthopedic pillow? To the distance from the beginning of the neck to the end of the shoulders, you need to add a couple of centimeters, the resulting number will become the ideal height of the pillow.

Pay attention to the firmness of the pillow. For the same sleep on the side, a firmer pillow is recommended to keep the neck and head comfortable. If your favorite sleeping position is on your back, then you can pay attention to pillows of medium hardness. Well and soft pillow can be purchased by those who like to rest on their stomach.

There are also memory foam pillows. Such a name, because the pillow correctly repeats the shape of your head and neck, remembers any position of sleep and adjusts. What are these pillows made from? They are made from high quality soft polyurethane foam.

Pillow filler

Pillows are filled with synthetic materials, natural materials of animal origin and natural fillers of plant origin. The choice of fillers is great and the variety confuses the question: "How to choose the right filler?". In the manufacture orthopedic pillows usually use synthetic fillers or combined materials.

The main condition of these fillers is that they must hold their shape with high quality, be durable and not crumble. Pillows made of polyurethane foam perfectly distribute the load on the cervical spine. The shape, degree of rigidity and density of these pillows may be different, but one thing is unshakable - this is their service life, which reaches seven years.

  • Latex pillows are characterized by increased elasticity, in addition, they are elastic and remarkably accept desired shape. The structure of this filler is spongy, due to the pillow is perfectly ventilated. Sleeping on a latex pillow is pleasant, as sleep is deep on it.
  • Pillows made of buckwheat husks have a pronounced orthopedic effect. The natural filler of such a pillow provides an invisible acupressure of the cervical region and this is great for scoliosis, problems with the cervical spine and muscle strain. Thanks to sleep on such a healing pillow, pain and insomnia disappear.
  • Memorix pillows are one of the most popular purchases among buyers. Love for them is due to the amazing material, because memorix is such an unusual polyurethane foam. The structure of the material is porous, has thermal sensitivity and is hypoallergenic. When the head is lowered onto such a pillow, under the influence of weight and heat, the pillow is pressed in, thereby adjusting to the size of the head and neck. The spine, while sleeping on a memory foam pillow, is in a relaxed state and sleep is sound.
  • Bamboo pillows will be a wonderful addition for both men and women and children. Bamboo material provides a comfortable microclimate, ideal humidity and excellent air exchange.
  • The silicone pillow is also in demand among buyers, and that's all, because its characteristics satisfy the needs. This pillow has excellent resilience, suitable for allergy sufferers and durable in quality. Such a pillow can, without any difficulties, be washed in a washing machine.

How to get used to an orthopedic pillow

At first, an orthopedic pillow can cause a feeling of disappointment, and this is absolutely normal, because after years of sleeping on a soft regular pillow habituation occurs, and the transition to a new pillow causes discomfort.

After about a couple of weeks of sleep, and sometimes even after a few days, a new addiction appears and with it, at the same time, a feeling of benefit from its acquisition begins. After it has become comfortable to sleep on an orthopedic pillow, and having noticed positive changes in the state of one's health, a person is unlikely to want to return to the old pillow.

Down pillows are filled exclusively with waterfowl down. Most often these are geese, less often - ducks, swans. Eider down can also be used, but it is very expensive. The reason for this is that eiderdown is hand-picked from nests. Products with such a filler are considered exclusive.

Pillows with natural swan down a rarity. No one kills swans for the production of pillows, and it is impossible to collect fluff from a live bird. Therefore, swan fluff in pillows is a siliconized artificial fiber.

Benefits of natural down filling:

  1. Softness and comfort (pleasant to the touch).
  2. Good thermal insulation (air circulates freely between the fluffs, which ensures coolness in hot weather and warmth in cold weather).
  3. Hygroscopicity (down absorbs moisture well and evaporates it).
  4. Light weight (a pillow measuring 50 * 70 cm weighs an average of 500 g, it is easy to transport).
  5. Relatively long service life - at least 5 years.
  6. No noise.

The disadvantages of such products are:

  1. They cause allergies (fluff filler is a natural material, dust mites start up in it, the waste products of which cause allergic reactions in sensitive people).
  2. Price (products made from natural materials are expensive).
  3. Difficult to care for.
  4. Lack of elasticity, which can provoke pain in the neck.

How to choose

Pillow down goes through 4 to 15 cleaning steps. Then it is additionally treated with steam, dust-free and dried. Complex technology requires expensive equipment. Therefore, a quality down pillow is expensive.

The filler consists not only of fluff. In its composition, a small content of the pen is allowed. If the value of 85/15 is indicated on the label, this means that the down content in the filler is 85%, and the feather content is 15%.

A high-quality down pillow does not rustle and quickly restores its shape when crushed.

When choosing a pillow, you need to feel it and inspect it from all sides. Quality product:

  1. does not rustle;
  2. when crushed, it restores its shape;
  3. does not emit an unpleasant odor.

Chemical substances after processing, they do not settle in viscose, but are completely washed out. The result is a material that is as close to natural as possible.

Bamboo pillows have the following advantages:

  1. Unique hypoallergenic properties (not only do not cause allergies, but also help to reduce existing manifestations).
  2. Good breathability.
  3. Excellent hygroscopicity (quickly absorb moisture and evaporate it).
  4. Elasticity (keep their shape well).
  5. They have an antibacterial effect (dust mites and microbes do not start in them).
  6. They do not absorb odors.
  7. Easy to care for.
  8. Serve for a long time.
  9. Affordable.

Disadvantages:

  1. Crinkling (over time, the fibers lose airiness and elasticity).
  2. Hygroscopicity (good moisture absorption can turn into a disadvantage if the pillow is used in a too humid room).

When choosing a pillow, you need to pay attention to the label. The filler should contain 100% bamboo fiber, the content of synthetics should be minimal. You should also inspect the seams - the stronger they are, the better the product.

Glad to meet you on the blog pages))

I, like most women, really like to buy different goods for the home. And this time we will talk about pillows, which you have to update and buy more often.

I will share information about the pillows that I have already used and know their advantages and disadvantages well, maybe this will help you when deciding which pillows are better to buy, I will give reviews of several types in the article.

It is clear that the basis of the bases of the pillow is the filler, it depends on how comfortable we will sleep. And for a comfortable sleep, you need to solve the main question which pillow is better to choose, what material filler meets the requirements of “useful and convenient”?

I'll start with the most popular pillows of yesteryear, gradually pushed back by bedding filled with new materials.

Before competitors feather pillows it just wasn't. Everyone, regardless of wealth and social status, slept on the same pillows - down and feathers. True, those who lived in the village and had the opportunity to pluck chickens and geese in large quantities they could only afford down pillows, without the admixture of feathers, however, such ones could still be bought for a fairly decent amount.

“Testing” feather pillows for many years, I studied all their advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages

Natural filler, delivers pleasant tactile sensations.

Durable. Previously, they were inherited not only by daughters, but also by granddaughters 😉 With proper care, she will easily serve you for five, six (ten ...)))

Warm, soft and fluffy.

Have high breathability

disadvantages

Allergenic. Moreover, the allergen is not the fluff itself, but the microscopic mites that love to live in it.

According to the manufacturers, even if you are allergic among modern down-feather pillows, you can find an option for yourself - the pillows are filled with decontaminated down, to which is added a cover made of a special fabric through which not only the filler, but also the mites living in it, cannot break through.

It is almost impossible to wash it yourself, so you need to periodically take it to dry cleaning, and you will have to do this quite often (most recommendations come down to a figure - once every six months). Once upon a time I tried to wash the feather on my own, it was, to put it mildly, terrible ...))

If you sweat a lot in your sleep, the feather begins to acquire an unpleasant odor.

Having put on a pillow of not very high quality, you will constantly see downy fluffs flying around the apartment, and prickly tips of feathers will peek through the fabric.

For me personally, the fact that the pillow is not quite “anatomical” is also a disadvantage, if there is a lot of down-feather in it, it becomes springy and too elastic, if part of the filler is removed, by morning it “creeps” from under the head, located in the corners.

Since for me the shortcomings of these pillows clearly prevail, I would not buy it again, perhaps, making an exception only for those who produce their products in accordance with new technologies, with varying degrees support and filler processing.

Such pillows have only one minus - the price, a quality pillow and the cost will be “quality”))

The price of a regular feather pillow is about $15.

My subjective assessment: 4/4.

Pillows filled with synthetic down

Such pillows were bought instead of down and feather pillows, but what about, mites do not live in synthetics;)

I have already bought several types of pillows with synthetic fillers, some of them were not bad, but since now I don’t remember what specific filler was used in them, I’ll write about the one I know well - synthetic down.

Advantages

- Cheap. Therefore, these pillows can be changed frequently.

As I already wrote - there are no harmful microorganisms, hypoallergenic.

Easy to care for, you can wash it yourself at home in a washing machine.

Keep in mind that the temperature during washing of synthetic fibers should not be higher than 40 degrees, they are afraid of high temperatures, losing their springiness from it.

disadvantages

Synthetics, it is synthetics, well, what it is made of ... of course.

Loses shape quickly. If right away it was pleasure - soft and at the same time springy, then after a while the “pleasure” turned into a lot of “slides” and “hills”, especially after several washes ...

It is not hygroscopic, which, again, is a whole problem for those who sweat at night.

Conclusion: I won’t buy home anymore, but where such pillows will definitely be good is in the country. They are light, washable without problems, dry quickly, do not absorb dampness and odors.

Price: about $4.

My subjective assessment: 4/4.

Another option is bamboo pillows.

Here it must be borne in mind that 100% bamboo fiber filler in pillows, unfortunately, does not happen. If artificial filler is not mixed with bamboo, it will not hold its shape.

Most often, bamboo filler is mixed with a highly siliconized fiber called "Swan Down". But despite this mixture, "conditionally" bamboo pillows turned out to be the best I've tried.

Bamboo pillows pros and cons

pros

Hypoallergenic.

They have antimicrobial and antibacterial properties.

Well pass air and absorb moisture.

Can be washed in a washing machine.

They have a long service life.

According to the manufacturer, they contain honey pectin, which has a beneficial effect on the skin.

Minuses

Everything is bad here, or rather, on the contrary, it’s good - there are no cons for bamboo products, well, practically absent) Searching the Internet for the shortcomings of these pillows did not help, by the way, I already wrote about this when I told. The only cons I could find were:

– Pillows should not be used where there is constant high humidity air. High ability bamboo fiber to absorb moisture in this case becomes a disadvantage.

What was the disadvantage for me in bamboo pillows? Perhaps only their increased elasticity, even though they are slightly crumpled over time, still remain quite high. Therefore, if you prefer pillows that you practically "fall through", then it's better not to buy bamboo ones.

Bamboo pillow care

Washable even at 60 degrees. It is better to wash in the "delicate wash" mode and liquid detergent, and it is worth adding it in small quantities, and then rinse well, otherwise the fibers will stick together and clumped.

It does not interfere with fluffing pillows periodically to prevent caking.

What else I would like to say, choose a pillow carefully, the manufacturer is different from the manufacturer, and even one company may have pillows of different quality in the same line.

I bought bamboo pillows twice, and when I bought them for the first time, I was disappointed that these pillows did not give the expected comfort. As part of the filler bamboo and "swan's down", manufacturer Lucy, Russia, Ivanovo.

The filler turned out to be wonderful to the touch - smooth, delicate and soft, after all, from the “swan” :) It seemed to me that the manufacturer packed it in the wrong case, in too hard, not conveying the delicate properties of down.

But after a while, when I saw pillows in the store that I liked in terms of quality, I was surprised to read on the label that they are also bamboo.

These pillows are produced by the Mona Lisa brand, Russia, Kursk, a very famous brand that produces not only bedding, but also.

The first days, lying on this pillow, I felt like a princess and a pea so high and it was not very comfortable, but in just a few days the pillow “crumpled” and began to flawlessly take the desired shape. I've been sleeping on it for quite some time and still love it.

What I didn’t like is that the percentage composition of bamboo and synthetic filler is not indicated on the labels of both pillows, it simply says “Composition of the filler: bamboo fiber, PE” I had to try to guess the amount natural material by experience.

How to determine if there is bamboo in the composition or if the pillow is completely filled with "swan's down". See how the filler will behave when burned. Bamboo fiber burns completely rather than melting, produces a light gray ash, and smells like burnt paper.

I tested all the pillows in the apartment except for the feather pillow, everything is clear with it - a natural product;)

This is what happened as a result - everyone melted)) (pillow filler "Mona Lisa" on the left, Lucy in the middle, sintepukh on the right).

Sintepukh behaved as it should be for artificial material - it melted instantly. The photo shows how it is not elastic and lumpy.

The filler from the Lucy bamboo pillow, which I bought first, also seemed very synthetic both in the way of charring and in the smell.

You can see what a gentle composition of swan fluff.

The filler from my favorite pillow melted somehow differently, and the color was much lighter, and the smell was the most natural - it really smelled like burnt paper.

According to the results of such testing, I again liked the filler in the Mona Lisa pillows the most.

Price: depends on the amount of bamboo filler, on average $10-20.

My subjective assessment: 4/5.

Sweet dreams on comfortable pillows 🙂

Update from 20.02.2016. Changed my assessment of the bamboo pillow from the article. As it turned out pillow pillows strife. Even containing the same filler, they are completely different from each other in terms of appearance, by tactile sensations and in operation. Now I’m trying pillows from Sovinson with different fillers: unusual ones filled with buckwheat husks, again bamboo, but from a different manufacturer, which turned out to be completely different from those described in the article, and with camel wool filler, which I “test” with of particular interest because, as they wrote in the comments to the article about migraine, they help with this type of headache. In my opinion, the quality of the filler, its kind of naturalness and pleasant tactile sensations are felt even through the pillowcase :) In the very near future it will be, do not forget to look at the blog)))
