The roller is rolled several times in a circle, after which 3-4 tangents are made with a conventional glass cutter, which facilitates chipping the glass along the boundaries of the cuts. One part of camphor in powder is dissolved in 2 parts of turpentine and mixed with 4 parts of coarse emery. The resulting paste is applied to the place where it is necessary to drill a hole. A piece of copper wire is clamped into a drill chuck. It is convenient to drill glass through plywood (jig) with guide holes. The glass must rest on a hard and level surface.

3. To drill a hole with a diameter of more than 4 mm in thick glass, a copper tube is used. On the glass around the alleged hole, a plasticine or putty fence is made in the form of a ring with inside diameter 40-50 mm and 8-10 mm high. Corundum powder is poured inside the ring (it is easy to prepare by grinding a piece of an unusable emery wheel). The powder is poured with a small amount of water to make a liquid slurry. Drill holes with a copper tube clamped in a chuck drilling machine. The diameter of the tube should be slightly smaller than the diameter of the selected hole. It is very important that the end of the tube is strictly perpendicular to its axis - this can be easily achieved by cutting the tube on lathe.

4. A hole in the glass can be made with molten solder. On the surface of the glass, previously carefully degreased with acetone, gasoline or alcohol, pour small hill slightly damp river sand. With a sharpened stick, a conical recess is made in it and a platform equal to the future hole is cleaned of sand. Molten solder with a temperature of 250-300 °C is stuck into the resulting sand mold. After the solder has cooled, the sand is removed, and the solder cone is removed along with the glass circle stuck to it.

Non-traditional glass drilling methods.

1. A thin steel drill, heated to white, is hardened in mercury or a piece of sealing wax and honed. Then a saturated solution of camphor is prepared in turpentine, a drill is moistened with it, mounted on a brace, and glass is quickly drilled, which is then wetted at the point of convergence with the named solution. This method can drill through glass 1 cm thick in less than one minute.

2. To drill a hole in glass, we recommend taking a triangular file, lowering it into turpentine and carefully drilling a hole.

3. You can also drill glass on a lathe with a copper rod, lubricating it with oil and sprinkling with emery. Special attention should turn to the hole when the drilling process comes to an end and only the last one remains thin layer as the glass can easily crack.

How to make a hole of any diameter in glass.

Glass is thoroughly degreased with acetone, gasoline or alcohol. Then, a handful of slightly moistened fine river sand is poured into the place where the hole will be.   2. When drilling, take small pauses of 5-10 seconds. At the same time, dip the drill in cool water to enhance the effect, otherwise it may melt.
  3. Do not rock the tool in different directions.
  4. Instead of alcohol, you can use acetone.
  5. When working, do not forget about safety precautions: use safety goggles and gloves.
  6. The hole must be located at least one and a half millimeters from the end of the glass sheet.
  7. It is desirable to work with glass on wood surfaces.

Ordinary glass could well displace from most areas industrial production half of the expensive metals, if not for one of its unfortunate drawbacks - fragility (in other words, extremely low impact resistance). Method number 1: Drill with a hardened steel tip

  1. Lay the sheet of glass on a stable and absolutely flat surface.
  2. We mark the centers of future holes (while keeping in mind that minimum distance holes from the edge should not be less than 12-15 mm. for thin glass, and 20-25 mm. - for thicker).
  3. We choose a drill (it can be either electric or manual) and a hardened drill.
  4. Around the place of drilling from putty or plasticine we make and firmly stick a ring with a diameter of 4-5 cm and a height of 1 cm.
  5. In the resulting "pool" pour a little vinegar or turpentine.
  6. We start the drilling process with a little pressure at low speeds (for an electric drill - no more than 300-330 rpm).
  7. For thick glass, we drill only half of the hole, after which we remove the putty and carefully turn the sheet over.
  8. Further, to obtain a full-fledged through hole, we repeat the process on the other side - fixing desired point center, again pressing the ring against the glass and pouring turpentine or vinegar before drilling.
  9. Choose plastic tube slightly smaller in diameter drilled hole, wrap it with fine-grained emery and clean the inner surface.

Method number 2: Drill with a steel non-hardened tip

Obviously, the drill tip will have to be hardened independently. We clamp the drill with pliers and place the tip in the flame from a gas burner (or an open flame if hardening is not done indoors). After changing the color of the steel of the tip to a white heat, cool the drill - ideally in sealing wax or, in the absence of such, in oil. The cooling process is considered complete when the sealing wax stops melting and the oil stops hissing. We clean the remnants of soot and then perform the sequence of operations described in method No. 1.

Method number 3: Drill with a carbide tip

This method is also similar to the first - but the composition of the liquid poured into the ring should be somewhat different: instead of turpentine, you should use its combination with camphor (in a ratio of 1 to 1), and instead of vinegar, aluminum alum dissolved in it in the same proportion.

In addition, it is desirable to cover the surface on which the glass sheet will be placed with a cloth.

Method number 4: In the absence of a drill - with wire and abrasive paste

It is quite possible that the necessary drill will not be at hand at all. Then it will have to be replaced copper wire(for holes of small diameter), which will “help” turn into a full-fledged drilling tool with an abrasive paste consisting of 2 parts of turpentine, 1 part of camphor and large emery grains. The mixture must be thoroughly mixed and filled with a container formed by a ring of plasticine or putty.

After that, the process should repeat p.p. 6 - 9 from the first method.

Method number 5: In the absence of a drill - with a tube and abrasive paste

If the hole diameter is too large for the wire, it is replaced with a tube of the appropriate section. Otherwise, this method copies the previous one (except that the composition of the paste can be replaced with corundum powder dissolved in water).

For glass, it is best to purchase corundum powder grade KP, fraction 180 microns (F80), white. This powder is sold construction stores in the departments of materials for metalworking.

Method number 6: In the absence of a drill - a tube and a screw

This method is an even more complicated version of the use of a duralumin, copper or aluminum tube, from which something like a homemade drill is made.

For this:

  1. We tightly insert a cork made of wood 2-3 cm long into the hollow hole of one of its ends, into which a screw protruding by about 1.5 cm is screwed.
  2. Saw off the head of a securely seated screw.
  3. We cut out the other end of the tube with a 3-sided file so that several teeth are obtained.
  4. We insert the protruding part of the screw into the drill and fix it.
  5. We cut out 2 cardboard washers, with a section along the diameter of the hole, and glue them to the glass on both sides at the drilling site.
  6. We cover the supporting surface on which the glass will lie with rubber (to create greater elasticity), and sprinkle the drilling site with abrasive powder from emery.
  7. The teeth of the tube (playing the role of the drill head) are carefully soaked in turpentine - after which we immediately begin drilling at low speeds until the passage of 1/4 - 1/3 of the hole.
  8. We turn the glass over and repeat the procedure - after which the coup follows again (1 or 2 times until a through hole is drilled).
  9. At the end, we clean up according to the first method.

Method number 7: In the absence of a drill and a drill

The last method (often used when it is necessary to obtain a hole of a sufficiently large diameter) does not use drilling at all. It is produced as follows:

  1. The place where it is necessary to make a hole is carefully degreased (with a rag soaked in acetone, alcohol or gasoline).
  2. We pour fine wet sand on the surface of the glass - in such a way that the diameter of the "slide" (as high as possible) somewhat exceeds the cross section of the future hole.
  3. With a sharply sharpened tube or stick, we carefully make a vertical funnel-shaped hole in the sand to the surface of the glass sheet (making sure that in the end the glass “bottom” that appears is exactly equal to the diameter of the hole and does not contain a single grain of sand).
  4. Melt lead or tin solder and pour it into the funnel.
  5. After 2-3 minutes (when the metal hardens), we completely sweep away the sand and carefully remove the cone.

Since the glass begins to soften and melt already at a temperature of 300 ° C, the glass circle will “stick” to the metal and be pulled out with it - and the resulting hole from the inside does not even have to be processed.

Thus, even without high-quality diamond glass cutters (or even the necessary drill and even the drill itself), it is not so difficult to drill a hole of the required diameter in sheet glass. Although, of course, pre-training is best done not on finished product- but on a piece of glass, whose further use is not planned.

2. If there is no drill, use copper wire to be inserted into the drill. In this case, drilling takes place using a specially prepared solution. One part camphor and two parts turpentine, to this mixture add a coarse-grained type powder from sandpaper. Lay the mixture in the place where you want to drill a hole and start working.

3. There is another way using this solution. Use a metal piece of tubing that should be inserted into the drill. Make a plasticine ring and attach it to the glass surface. The height of the ring is 10 mm and the diameter is 50 mm. In the recess, apply a solution of turpentine, camphor and emery powder.

4. Take a tube made of aluminum, copper or duralumin, the length of which is about 5 cm. Hammer a wooden plug into one end, and cut out the teeth with a hexagonal file into the other. Screw the self-tapping screw into the end on which the wooden plug is located, saw off its head. On the inner and outer parts of the glass, attach two circles previously cut out of cardboard, the diameter of which, such as the diameter of the future hole. Lay the glass on the rubber surface and sprinkle abrasive powder on it.
