Crafts from PVA glue: the best application ideas and technology for making the best crafts. Recipe for making pva glue at home

- glue, widely used in various fields, and, without exaggeration, being one of the most popular.

And although you can purchase this product without problems, self-production is also not difficult, which will help out in a situation where you urgently need to glue something, but the funds were not at hand.

Polyvinyl acetate

Polyvinyl acetate, better known as PVA glue, is produced on an industrial scale using special equipment. In the mortar mixer, the polyvinyl acetate dispersion and the filler are mixed.

There are various types of this glue (stationery, wallpaper, universal, etc.) and, accordingly, manufacturing recipes. It is difficult to accurately follow the PVA recipe at home, but it is not at all difficult to make an analogue that will practically not be inferior in its properties and characteristics.

How can you make PVA glue "with your own hands"?

Recipe

There are many recipes self cooking glue. We offer one of the most easily implemented and available recipes, almost all the ingredients of which are sold in a pharmacy (except for photographic gelatin, which must be looked for in a specialized store, as well as flour - if it suddenly does not appear at home, then in the nearest grocery store definitely found).

So, to prepare PVA, you need to take:

  • 1-1.2 liters of distilled water;
  • 20-25 ml of ethyl alcohol;
  • 4-5 g of glycerin;
  • 5-6 g of photographic gelatin;
  • 100-120 g flour.

Cooking process

Gelatin is soaked for a day in ordinary warm tap water according to the instructions, after which it dissolves in a steam bath. Flour and distilled water are added, and the mixture is kept on fire until it acquires the density of sour cream. During boiling, the mixture must be constantly stirred.

When the desired consistency is reached, the mixture is removed from the heat and slightly cooled. After that, you need to add alcohol and glycerin and mix everything thoroughly so that there are no lumps. If the formation of lumps still could not be prevented (they may appear even at the boiling stage), then you can pass the glue through a sieve.

When the mass has completely cooled, it can be used for gluing paper, wood and other parts for which PVA is usually used.

Storage of finished glue

You can store a homemade product for no more than six months. The ideal storage temperature is + 10-15 degrees.

Nothing bad will happen if the glue remains with room temperature, but when the thermometer is minus, the “functionality” of the product drops sharply. It will be usable for no more than one month.

Youtube video about the production of glue

In this video, you can clearly see how PVA is done at home without problems. A very simple recipe, according to which it will not be difficult to make glue even for those who are trying home “glue production” for the first time.

Producers of PVA glue in Russia

In Russia, many companies produce PVA glue and dispersions. For most of them, this product is only part of the range. These enterprises specialize mainly in the production of paint and varnish products. In addition, there are companies that produce exclusively PVA products, such as, for example, Polymer Export, Rikol and others. These are large manufacturers exclusively engaged in the production of PVA glue and vinyl acetate dispersions.

When choosing a product, give preference to reliable manufacturers, especially if you are going to glue large or expensive items.

Areas of application of the adhesive

PVA glue is used in a wide variety of areas, from gluing paper to various types industry. This product is widely used in repair work(wallpaper sticker, primer, addition to cladding solutions, gluing wood elements, fiberboard, etc.)

This adhesive is used in the printing and packaging industry for gluing paper products. It is also widely used in the woodworking and furniture industries, since PVA does not change the color of wood and allows you to save its properties.

IN textile industry they “strengthen” carpets and connect fabrics. It is also used in the manufacture of glass and paint products, household chemicals, shoes, etc.

Do-it-yourself glue or is it better to buy?

Prices for PVA glue vary depending on the type of glue, manufacturer, product weight, etc. For example, 1 kg of universal PVA glue costs, on average, from 40 to 60 rubles, a five-ten-kilogram container will cost a little less.

In general, this product has a very democratic price, and if any complex or responsible work is expected, then it is better to buy glue made in industrial conditions. But if you already have experience in self-manufacturing PVA, or there is no way to purchase it, and something needs to be glued together urgently, then you can do it without any problems on your own.

What can replace PVA glue?

The problem with replacing PVA most often occurs in those who live in foreign countries, as this product is sometimes quite difficult to find there. If suddenly there is a need to find a replacement, then you need to focus on the material of the surfaces that must be connected. For wooden parts you can buy special glue for wood, for wallpapering - “wallpaper”, etc. Paper or cardboard is glued at home using a regular paste (made from flour and / or potato starch. So it’s easy to choose a substitute for PVA, the only negative that such products are often more expensive than this versatile, inexpensive and sought-after adhesive.

Many people often need to glue or glue some object made of plastic, wood, rubber, etc. Today in stores you can find glue for various purposes. But what to do if you don’t have glue at home, and going to the store is not the right time. In this article, we will tell you how to make your own glue and look at popular glue recipes.

You will need:

casein

This glue is designed for gluing wood, paper, cardboard. Therefore, you can safely use it, or.

Its advantage over other types of glue is that it is not afraid of moisture.

Making casein glue at home is easy:

  • To do this, you will need to pour yellowish or white casein powder into a bowl.
  • Then pour water into it in small portions, constantly stirring the contents of the vessel.

  • Pour water until you get a mass of about the same density as sour cream.
  • It takes about 30 minutes to stir the casein glue, as its quality will depend on this.

You can prepare casein from fat-free cottage cheese:

  • To do this, squeeze it well in gauze.
  • Rinse in water with soda, squeeze hard and dry.

  • After complete drying, the cottage cheese is ground into powder and sieved.

Dextrin

This glue will easily help you glue leather, fabric, paper and cardboard.

To make dextrin glue you need:

  • Dextrin 3 tbsp. l
  • Cold water 4-5 tbsp. l

You will need to stir 3 tablespoons of dextrin in 4-5 tablespoons of cold water. In the process of stirring, the water must be heated and continue to stir, and after a while add a spoonful of glycerin.

Glue is used cold and stored in an airtight container.

Waterproof

To make waterproof glue, use freshly curdled milk or cottage cheese and mix it with slaked lime so that a homogeneous thick mass is obtained.

The resulting mass thin layer Apply to the surface to be bonded, squeeze firmly and dry.

It is best to glue wood materials with this glue.

PVA

To make PVA glue, take:

  • Potato/wheat flour 4 tbsp. l
  • Water 0.5 tbsp.

Combine, stir thoroughly, so that there are no lumps. While the starch is being stirred into cold water you need to boil the water. Quickly pour boiling water into the already mixed solution of starch and water and stir the mixture for 10 minutes. It is not recommended to use iron spoons, as they heat up quickly and can be easily burned.

Put the resulting glue on the stove and boil it until a transparent and jelly-like mass is obtained.

Flour is also combined with a glass of water. Heat 1 liter of water, pour in gelatin and flour solutions. Bring to a boil, pour in alcohol and glycerin, mix everything and leave to cool.

    How to make styrofoam glue?

    The process of creating glue is absolutely not complicated: find a container, pour solvent into it, lower the material and wait until it is completely dissolved, apply with a brush to selected areas. When the substance dries, it will resemble glass.

    How to make conductive glue with your own hands?

Before thinking about how to make PVA glue at home, you need to decide - why is such “chemical creativity” necessary at all? Self-manufacturing adhesive compositions is relevant in cases where there are doubts about the quality of purchased analogues or they are not available in retail.

PVA glue - basic characteristics

In addition, home-made glue can be given unique features by changing the recipe, it is permissible to paint it in light colors. At drawing liquid wallpaper or pasting the walls with thin paper rolls, matching the adhesive layer to their color will greatly facilitate the work. Repair Popularity of Polyvinyl Acetate Emulsion on water based(this is how the abbreviation PVA stands for) is associated with its impressive properties:

  • Frost resistance - it is important to understand that we are talking about the resistance to freezing of the already applied adhesive layer. PVA in liquid form does not tolerate frost! If you leave a container with liquid polyvinyl acetate glue for the winter in a “cold” garage or cellar, then in the spring it can be safely thrown away - the thawed liquid will not glue and thin sheets paper;
  • High adhesive power. For a reliable connection of the parts of the adhesive assembly, a relatively small amount of glue is needed; after a tight pairing of the parts, it is difficult to break them (more often the gap occurs along the base material, and not along the adhesive edge). According to the current standards for industrial PVA, the rupture force of glued joints is from 400 to 550 N/m. Glue home cooking it will be no less durable if you follow the technology of its manufacture (see below);
  • Safety in manufacturing, storage and operation. PVA has no toxic components, does not ignite and does not emit harmful compounds. It does not harm the skin of the hands, except that the eyes should be protected from adhesive splashes - but even such a nuisance is easy to deal with, it is enough to rinse with water, and the organs of vision will not be affected at all;
  • Good solubility in ordinary water and compatibility with organic solvents- benzene, methanol, acetone, etc. If PVA is diluted with toxic solvents, then their negative properties for humans are transferred to the entire emulsion;
  • Due to the high strength of the applied thin layer, this adhesive is indispensable for the small thickness of the surfaces to be glued;
  • When drying, polyvinyl acetate is not characterized by shrinkage, it does not form cavities. Excess glue is easily removed from the outer surface with an ordinary sponge and does not harm the most delicate coating (wallpaper sequins, thin paper, etc.);
  • The dried adhesive mass is quite strong, it can fill thin mounting gaps (up to 2 mm). This useful property in demand when decorating walls with wallpaper, especially when painting non-woven wallpaper- this way you can "smooth out" minor flaws such as joints of various thicknesses.

How to make glue for different occasions of repair life

The collective name "PVA glue" applies to a wide range of adhesive compositions, whose formulation and purpose are very different from each other. Their purpose can already be judged by the letter marking - the scope must be clearly indicated on the packaging and in the technical documentation:

  • PVA-K - ordinary composition office purposes. Flowing liquid of white (shades of yellow are allowed) color, without lumps, a film on the surface of the tube is possible. PVA-K does not tolerate water at all, the glued surfaces delaminate even with a slight frost. Due to the savings on plasticizers, this variety is cheap, but it is limited precisely by the clerical scope - gluing sheets of paper and thin cardboard up to A4;
  • PVA-B or PVA-O - household glue (wallpaper), an improved modification of stationery. The impact of moisture endures well, the surfaces pasted over with it can be repeatedly defrosted and frozen to temperatures of - 35 ˚C ... - 40 ˚C. It is used for pasting concrete, wood, putty and plastered surfaces with wallpaper sheets with a paper "backing", with the exception of heavy rolls - for such it is better to use liquid nails or special formulations from the manufacturer;
  • PVA-MB is a universal adhesive formulation compatible with both paper products and fabric, leather, wood, metal and glass. Thick liquid without lumps, frost-resistant after application up to -20 ˚C;
  • PVA-M - improved universal glue (super-PVA). Frost-resistant up to -40 ˚C, strength and moisture resistance make it possible to glue on PVA-M not only any wallpaper, but also facing tiles and linoleum (with the exception of rooms with constantly high humidity);
  • PVA dispersion is a low water base for any polyvinyl acetate emulsion. It consists of polymeric and colloidal components, from which PVA glue of other varieties is made by adding water. Differs in high-speed pasting, fingers at test stick to each other practically instantly. It is used very widely - as an additive in solutions for plaster, in the printing industry, in the shoe and leather industries, in the production of textiles, etc.

In its pure form, any PVA glue must be used at positive air temperatures - as part of the same mortars the use of dispersion has no climatic limits.

How to make PVA glue at home - miniature chemical industry

To learn how to make PVA glue at home, you need to purchase minimum set adhesive ingredients. For 1 liter of aqueous solution you will need:

  • Wheat flour, white, well sifted - 100 grams;
  • Ethyl alcohol, technical can be - 20-30 grams;
  • Finely dispersed gelatin, it is also called "photographic" - 5-10 grams;
  • Glycerin ordinary - 5-10 grams;
  • Coloring pigment organic, light colors - as needed.

Preliminary preparation is needed for the preparation of an aqueous solution of gelatin - it is diluted from a ratio of 10 grams of water per 1 gram of dry gelatin and left to “soak” for a day. If the jelly is too thick (the quality of gelatin may vary), it can be diluted hot water and mix thoroughly. Further chemical manipulations will be carried out the next day.

We will need two enameled dishes, and one should be structurally combined with the other. The fact is that home-made PVA must be boiled in a water bath. Pour gelatin solution and water into a smaller container, set in a bowl with water big size and put on a strong fire.

It is required to bring the gelatin-water mixture to a boil and only then gradually add flour. The process is similar to making semolina porridge - if you want this dish to turn out without lumps, you need to stir constantly. Only now the semolina is cooked quickly, and it will take at least an hour to completely dissolve the flour in water with gelatin (and our glue brew must be stirred all the time wooden spoon, how would you like it?).

When the necessary consistency of thick sour cream is reached, it's time to add alcohol, glycerin and dye. After adding these components, homemade PVA must still be kept in a water bath for 30 minutes, without stopping stirring thoroughly. Then it remains to cool the resulting composition and make sure of its adhesive qualities in the repair business. Properly prepared glue has a shelf life of at least 6 months in liquid form, if you remember to carefully seal the neck and do not expose the container to frost.

What to do if the craving for creativity took you by surprise at night, and the glue ran out inopportunely? It’s dark outside, the shops are closed, and it’s absolutely necessary to continue your favorite pastime. Making glue with your own hands is actually the simplest procedure that does not require special chemical knowledge and specific ingredients. All the ingredients are likely to be in your kitchen. Knowing how to make glue at home with your own hands, you do not need to run to the store for a new tube. Here are some recipes.

Making glue at home (three simple recipes)

Ingredients:

  • Wheat flour;
  • water.

Pour some flour into a bowl and add a little water. Start mixing the flour, adding water (if necessary) until a homogeneous mass without lumps is obtained. Place the bowl over low heat and, stirring constantly, bring the mixture to a boil. Leave to cool naturally at room temperature.

Flour paste is not stored. It spoils quickly and is suitable for quick use.

Wheat glue for paper

Ingredients:

  • white wheat flour - 1.5 cups;
  • boiled water - 2 cups;
  • cold water - 1 glass;
  • sugar - 0.5 cups;
  • alum - 1 tablespoon.

Mix flour and sugar, slowly adding cold water. Beat the mixture until there are no lumps and a paste is formed. Put on fire and boil the pasta until it becomes a little stiff. Remove from heat and add alum. Let cool naturally at room temperature.

In a tightly sealed plastic container, it is stored somewhat longer than flour paste. The hardened mixture can be soaked by adding a little boiling water.

milk soda

Ingredients:

  • dry milk - 2 tablespoons;
  • hot water - a quarter of a cup;
  • vinegar - 1 tablespoon;
  • soda - half a teaspoon.

Mix the milk powder well with some hot water and add the vinegar. Due to the reaction with vinegar in hot water the milk should separate into lumps of flakes and liquid whey. Continue stirring until the milk is completely separated.

Separate the resulting "yogurt" from the liquid whey by gently straining it. This is best done with a paper towel.

Collect all the "yogurt" in a separate smaller container and beat until smooth. Add a teaspoon of boiling water and a quarter teaspoon of baking soda. Foaming of the mass may occur (chemical reaction of soda with vinegar). Stir the mixture until smooth. Add water if the mixture is too thick, and if the mixture is lumpy, add a little more baking soda.

Keeps for a short time. If the smell of spoiled milk appears, the mixture should be discarded.

Types of glue

Surely, almost every one of us used, but rarely thought about its ingredients and methods of industrial production. Glue - a substance, mainly made from natural or synthetic substances.

Natural adhesives

Produced from vegetable (resin) or biological sources (bones, skin). Invented in ancient times, when smart people realized that from the bones, skins, skin and connective tissues of animals, collagen protein with sticky properties can be extracted by special processing. Today, most adhesive compositions are made on the basis of biological substances, and the process of obtaining a cool mass differs little from prehistoric. Most often, the sticky mass is produced by dehydrating the skins. The skins are first soaked in water and then treated with lime. Lime is neutralized with a weak acid solution. Further, the skins are kept in water at 70 degrees, in connection with which a substance is released from the tissues, which is scraped off and used for its intended purpose.

The source of the sticky substance is also casein, milk, ambulin obtained from cow blood serum, fish heads, bones, skin, scales, air bubbles of some fish, from which a white, odorless substance called "ichthyokol" is obtained.

Vegetable glue is obtained from starch, which is found in vegetables and grains, gum, agar and algin from algae, and gum arabic, the milky sap of some trees.

Synthetic adhesives

Cyanoacrylate is the main ingredient in a synthetic adhesive, also known as "superglue", discovered by Harry Coover (1942) in the research laboratories of Kodak, an optically transparent plastic company. In 1958, cyanoacrylate was already sold in stores under the brand name "Superglue".

Epoxy resins are of industrial importance. two-component adhesives: epoxy resin and various modifications of additives that improve elasticity and impart certain physical and mechanical properties to the product.

The most famous and frequently used adhesives in artistic creative practice are, of course, polyvinyl acetate (PVA) and carpentry. Slightly less used, the so-called "office" based on liquid glass.

Despite the fact that the choice of adhesive mixtures in stores is impressive, many builders prefer to make their own compositions from improvised materials. For different types surfaces prepare their solutions. Let's consider in detail how you can do it yourself.

Homemade flour glue

This is the most common composition used in wallpapering. In terms of its properties, it is not inferior to many store counterparts, but at the same time it is environmentally friendly and safe to use.

To prepare the glue we need:

  • 6 art. l. flour
  • 1 liter of water.
  • container for mixing components.

1 liter of this mixture is enough for sticking 2-3 rolls of wallpaper.

How to make glue from flour? Heat ¾ volume of water to a boil. In the remaining ¼ cold water, stir the flour so that no lumps remain. Then pour the mixture of flour and water into boiling water in a stream, stirring constantly. After boiling, the glue is set aside to cool.

Starch can be used instead of flour. The resulting solution will have similar properties.

Homemade PVA glue

Today it is one of the most sought after compositions. In everyday life, it is something universal. How to make PVA glue?

For this you will need:

  • 1 liter of water (preferably distilled)
  • 5 g photographic gelatin
  • 150 grams of flour
  • 4 g pharmacy glycerin
  • 20 ml ethyl alcohol

Gelatin should be soaked for a day in 1 glass of water. Then you can start preparing PVA glue. We place distilled water in a water bath and add gelatin and flour mixed in cold water to it. Mix everything thoroughly, preventing the formation of lumps. The resulting mixture should reach the consistency of sour cream and gain White color. The next step is the addition of glycerin and alcohol. The residence time of the mixture in the water bath should be approximately 10 minutes. In this case, the composition should be constantly stirred. Next, you should cool the glue and you can start using it.

How to prepare wood glue?

This solution is used for wooden surfaces paper, cardboard, plastic. However, he has weak spots– glue has a sharp bad smell, not intended for long-term storage in liquid form.

You can solve the problem if you make a gelatinous mass, after boiling the wood glue. At the right time, you can cut off a piece and heat it over low heat.

Cooking options:

  • We take wood glue, grind it in water and wait for it to swell completely. We place it in a canning tank (glue) and put it in a water bath. As soon as the composition has become liquid, we dilute it with vodka (based on 720 grams of wood glue - 950 grams of vodka) and add alum (12 g of powdered alum per 100 grams of the mixture). The resulting wood glue will have a high degree of adhesion and moisture resistance.
  • In an oilcloth, mix water and carpentry mixture in a ratio of 1: 1. After boiling and thickening, pour the composition into a ceramic mortar and grind until a homogeneous gelatinous mass is formed. Then put the glue on the board and cut into pieces.
  • In a water bath, we heat the mixture based on 1 liter of water, 1 kg of wood glue, 1 liter-9% percentage table vinegar. While stirring the solution, gradually pour in 1 liter of vodka, cool and use.
  • We dilute wood glue with water 1: 1 and heat it in a water bath until it thickens completely, then add glycerin in a volume equal to the volume of glue. Cook the mixture over low heat until the water has completely evaporated. Pour into molds and refrigerate.

Glue based on linoleum and acetone

To prepare the composition in home environment, take the old linoleum and cut it into small pieces, then place it in a container and fill it with acetone in a ratio of 1: 2 (1 part of linoleum to 2 parts of acetone). Close the container tightly and place in a dark place for 12 hours. After this period, the mixture can be used.

How to make universal moisture resistant glue?

To prepare a universal moisture-resistant composition, it is enough to take the carpentry mixture and soak it in water until it swells completely. Next, the solution should be brought to a gelatinous state, heating over low heat and periodically pouring linseed oil at the rate of 1:4 (1 part oil to 4 parts glue).
