The role is the same in most companies. This position was conceived as the position of "top management representative" for the quality management system (, - ed.) in accordance with ISO 9001 (2008 - ed.). But now, with the advent new edition standard (2015 - ed.), the requirement to introduce a quality representative into the organizational mechanism was removed. Are there any that have a connection with the work of a quality manager? In this article, we will look at what are the requirements of the updated QMS and how should they be implemented?

What in ISO 9001:2015 can be considered as requirements for a company's quality manager?

Let's say right away that there are no direct requirements addressed to specialists in the quality of an enterprise in the standard. But there are many obligatory types activities that fit very well with the traditional functionality of quality managers. If you are reading this material to understand what a quality manager does and check the “done” box, then the following types of work can be included in the job descriptions of the manager himself or team members interacting with him directly:

  • understanding the needs of stakeholders: Clause 4.2 of ISO 9001 requires companies that . Customers, suppliers... Then you need to - according to the standard - to formulate what the requirements of these interested parties are for the results of the enterprise. The implementation of this task and keeping the collected data up to date is already the usual mission of a quality manager;
  • implementation and continuous improvement of QMS processes: if the company has already identified its business processes and their interconnections, implemented QMS processes, in response to 4.4, now it is necessary to map the course of processes in order to track the effect of changes in the system. Support for debugging processes after the implementation of the quality system is a function of many quality managers;
  • customer orientation and product compliance: when we study the requirements in terms of consumer orientation from clause 5.1.2, it becomes necessary to identify and opportunities that can affect the conformity of the product. Management of risks and opportunities in practice can be entrusted to the quality manager. The standard goes further on this point in clause 6.1 of the standard;
  • responsibility and authority in the QMS: Section 5.3 requires that a large number activities, including ensuring compliance with the QMS, processes that guarantee customer orientation, reporting reliable information about the results of the system - all this is in the field. Management for this distributes responsibility and authority. Many of these jobs, in which management must demonstrate leadership, have a quality manager in charge;
  • quality objectives: (6.2), the report of the situation in this aspect is another traditional role of the quality manager. The presence of one specialist to whom similar functions are reduced great idea, as this better guarantees the overall focus of all activities that are related to quality objectives.
  • internal and external communication: feedback with customers (7.4) is easiest to deal with if you have one quality contact. And such a person in the enterprise is often the quality manager. If your situation is described here, then customers always know who to call if a problem occurs. No precious time wasted searching the right person for negotiations. This is also good for the internal "kitchen" of the company, as it will only be beneficial if employees know who to contact specifically for a certain type of questions, in particular, regarding the QMS. - an ideal candidate for the role of a single contact;
  • production and provision of services: subsection ISO 9001 8.6 tells us that we must have preliminary requirements for the results of the work in order to check with them what happened and understand that it turned out exactly what we needed. People who conduct similar activities in organizations, as a rule, report to the quality manager. Thus, he becomes responsible for such operations.
  • management and planning of internal audits: Of all the requirements of the ninth section of ISO 9001, the provisions related to performance evaluation, management requirements are most easily integrated with the responsibilities of a quality manager. Here again the old argument works: if you assign these powers to one person, then resources will be better concentrated and focused;
  • nonconformities and corrective actions: no surprise that quality managers are responsible for requirements 10.2 for processing. With one owner, these processes, which are used throughout the organization, can be more easily managed, uniform procedures will be applied throughout the company, leading to the implementation of best practices in the work.

To learn more useful information about the work of top management quality representatives in the light of the emergence of ISO 9001:2015, you can in our article " What is the fate of the senior quality management representative in connection with the advent of ISO 9001:2015?».

Do you need a quality manager to meet the requirements of ISO 9001:2015?

As we have already said, there are no direct requirements in the standard that you must have a quality manager. However, the tasks listed above are mandatory under ISO 9001. And their implementation fits very well with the traditional responsibilities of quality managers in organizations. Just remember that if you still have a separate quality specialist, this does not mean that all tasks fall on him in general. needs the support of all members of the top management of the enterprise. The presence of a quality manager does not replace the participation of top management in solving quality system problems. It doesn't matter how good a manager you can find.
