The earth in a flower pot is covered with white bloom: why and what to do? White plaque on the soil of indoor plants.

Sometimes I notice that a white coating forms on the top layer of soil in a pot. There is nothing good in this, since plaque indicates improper care for a houseplant.

In order to understand what it is and how to avoid the occurrence of white plaque, you need to know why it appears. Based on this, you will have to create conditions that prevent its formation.

Waterlogging of the soil

White bloom on the ground indoor plants formed for various reasons.

  • One of the main ones is improper watering. Water, which is supplied to the plant in excess, begins to actively evaporate, forming salts on the surface of the soil.
  • Their accumulation also occurs in case of poor watering. It is only saturated with water upper layer substrate. I water the plants so that the water passes through the entire soil, but does not linger in it. To do this, I create a good drainage layer. It allows excess water to leave after watering and not evaporate on the soil surface.
  • Dry room air also leads to intense water evaporation, and salts are quickly carried to the top layer of soil. It gradually becomes saline, and from this the plants begin to hurt. Now I constantly monitor the humidity of the air and noticed that the crust of salts has ceased to form.

Oversaturation with fertilizers

White plaque on the soil is formed if the houseplant is overfed with fertilizers. Once I bought a substrate in a store and over time I discovered that the earth in a pot began to become covered with a white coating. It turned out that I purchased the soil intended for planting vegetables. Manufacturers usually oversaturate such mixtures with fertilizers.

Improper feeding of the plant can also disrupt the condition of the soil. During the growth period, it is important to accurately calculate the dosage. During dormancy, I don't fertilize houseplants at all.

The cause of plaque can also be too much soil that does not match the size of the plant and its needs. The roots will not fully absorb moisture, and its excess, when it comes to the surface, will begin to form salt deposits. Therefore, I always select a pot according to the size of each particular plant. The soil in the pot is also covered with a white coating from too soft water.

Biological processes

except physical processes that affect the formation of white plaque, biological factors also affect the soil surface. One of them is fungal microflora. It is formed, again, from excessive watering.

It happens that the acquired land already contains mold. For adult indoor flowers, this is not as dangerous as for young seedlings. Sometimes this mold grows throughout the depth of the pot. I get rid of such a substrate as quickly as possible. And don't throw it in the garden! Somewhere further away under the fence.

What to do?

There is different ways fight this raid. The easiest way I find is to remove the top layer and replace it with fresh soil. I add some river sand on top and mix it into the top ball of soil. I had to get rid of the mold only by a complete transplant of the plant and pre-treatment of the pot laundry soap and boiling water.

Well, how to prevent many other problems with indoor flowers, see this video:

Soil color is one of the most important external properties it, the most accessible for observation and widely used in soil science for naming soils (chernozem, red soil, yellow soil, gray soil, etc.).

Soil color is directly related to its chemical composition, conditions of soil formation, humidity.

The color of the horizon depends on the presence in the soil of one or another amount of coloring substances. The upper horizons are stained with humus in dark colors(gray and brown). How large quantity soil contains humus, the darker the horizon is colored. The presence of iron and manganese gives the soil brown, ocher, red tones. Whitish, white tones suggest the presence of podzolization processes (washing out of decomposition products of the mineral part of the soil), salinization, salinization, carbonization, i.e. the presence of silica, kaolin, calcium and magnesium carbonate, gypsum and other salts in the soil.

Soils are rarely painted in any one pure color. Usually the soil color is quite complex and consists of several colors (for example, gray-brown, whitish-gray, reddish-brown, etc.), with the name of the predominant color being placed last.

Thus, to determine the color of the soil horizon, it is necessary:

but) set the dominant color;

b) determine the saturation of this color (dark, light-colored);

in) note the shades of the main color. For example, brownish light gray, brownish brown, light, grayish fawn, etc.).

When describing the soil, it is necessary to indicate the degree of color uniformity. For example, brownish-gray, heterogeneous, against a gray background, brown and rust spots and lubes. Such a description helps to more fully characterize the soil and evaluate it genetically.

When determining the color of the soil in field conditions it is necessary to take into account soil moisture and the degree of illumination of the soil section. Wet soil has a darker color than air-dry soil, so it is very important to indicate the degree of moisture when describing the soil. This facilitates further cameral processing of field data.

Much also depends on the illumination of the soil by the sun. Lighting should be uniform throughout the soil profile, as soil looks darker in the shade and it is easy to make mistakes in determining its color. It is better to determine the color of the soil when the sun is high than in the early morning or evening.

It is advisable to check the color of the soil in samples brought to an air-dry state, i.e., well dried in a dry room or in air (but not in the sun). To achieve uniformity in determining the color of soils, a color scale can be compiled from soil samples common in the study area, and used as a standard in describing the soil profile.

The color depends on the substances that accumulate in the process of soil formation. The most important for soil coloration are 3 groups of compounds:

humus - black,

iron - red and blue,

Si+CaCO3+H4SiO3 - white color.

The most typical color is black. Humus is formed as a result of the sod process (mixed forest, grass (turf)). Pure turf can be formed under oak, hornbeam, ash (sod-burozem process). Humus has the consistency of tar, everything that comes into contact with it turns black. All the upper horizons of our soils are black (6-8%) in color. There are also derivatives of this color: dark gray (5%), light gray (1-3%), gray (4%). Coloring depends on the quantitative content of humus. The white color is due to the podzolic process.

Process flow:

A) Coniferous shady forest;

B) Acid coniferous litter, forest litter;

C) Flushing water regime, predominance of precipitation over evaporation;

D) Mineralization of acidic coniferous litter;

D) release from the dead inorganic matter mineral elements, and from dead organics organic acids (malic, oxalic, formic);

E) Destruction by organic acids of the mineral part of the soil or its solid phase;

G) The removal of mineral elements formed as a result of the destruction of the solid phase of the soil in the underlying horizons. In connection with the removal to the lower horizons, the tops are lightened until they approach white; derivatives: yellow, light yellow, fawn. Lightening occurs in horizon A2. The intensity of the color depends on the course of podzolic processes: the stronger they are, the closer the color is to a whitish color. There are: strong (whitish), medium (yellow), weak (yellow) podzolic processes. Also White color soils can be caused by the carbonate process. Where there is a lot of calcium, there is a carbonate process. (this is great)

Red gives many shades: brown, light, dark orange, chestnut, etc.

Blue color - swamp process. Derivatives: blue, light, dark, just blue, purple. Hue is related to the intensity of the process. Parameters responsible for the process:

1. Constant excess of moisture;

2. As a consequence of the first anaerobic conditions;

3. The activity of anaerobic microorganisms, under their influence, iron (red) is oxidized into blue iron. Horizons with blue tint- gley. The soil is garbage, and peat, as a result, is good. The rapid mineralization of peat leads to the depletion and death of fertile soil.

When growing indoor flowers, various difficulties arise. Plants get sick, they are attacked by pests. Often, mold or white bloom is visible on the surface of the soil in a pot. You can cope with a raid if you know about the cause of its occurrence.

The green organisms of indoor plants are sensitive to the living conditions offered to them. Any changes in care are stressful for flowers. You can notice the irregularities of cultivation by the state of the soil in flower pot. If a white coating appears on top of the soil, then it is necessary to check whether all the rules for caring for the plant are observed.

There are two types of white coating on top of the soil of a flower pot. The first is associated with the deposition of salts. To the touch it is harsh, calcareous. Its appearance is associated with illiterate plant care:

  • Excessive watering leads to the fact that moisture evaporates more actively from the surface of the earth, leaving salts on it.
  • Rare and poor soil moisture leads to the fact that only the top layer of the earth mixture is impregnated. Hence the white coating after the evaporation of the liquid.
  • IN winter time dry air in the room stimulates the drying process of the soil in the tank. Salts in the irrigation water are not removed outside, remaining on the surface. Hence the salinity of the soil. Indoor plants wither from this, develop poorly.
  • Overfeeding the flower with mineral fertilizers leads to the formation of a white coating.
  • The selection of the volume of the flower pot plays an important role for the plants at home. A spacious container will result in the roots not being able to absorb moisture and nutrients. Their excess will appear in the form of salt deposits.
  • If the composition of the soil is heavy, there are a lot of acids in it, and there is no drainage layer in the pot, then a white coating will definitely appear in the pot.
  • In urban apartments, hard water flows from the tap. If she waters indoor flowers, then the appearance of a white coating is inevitable.

A coating, fluffy and wet, on the ground in a pot indicates that the soil is infected with pathogenic fungi. ideal condition for the development and spread of fungal spores is high humidity indoors over 85-90 percent and the temperature is 20-25 degrees Celsius. For the spread of the fungus, stagnant air is needed, the absence of sunlight. For plants, white mold is detrimental. If you do not take action, the plant will die. FROM limescale easier to deal with than mold.

What to do: ways to get rid of white plaque

It is necessary to remove white plaque as soon as it is found on the ground in a pot:

  • You can improve the soil in a pot by loosening the top layer. After that, it is recommended to add fresh soil, into which some river sand is added.
  • Refresh the soil in a pot by removing the top layer and filling it with disinfected soil containing humus.
  • If the pot is elevated, then by removing upper part substrate, pour deoxidizer. It could be chalk dolomite flour, .
  • After replacing the top layer with a white coating with a new one, it is necessary to properly irrigate, fertilize according to the instructions for their use. To soften hard water from the tap, it is poured into containers and settled for a day or two.
  • You can get rid of mold by spraying the plants three times with a break of 10-14 days. Drying the soil will temporarily stop the spread of mold spores. You can sprinkle the soil in a pot and crushed activated carbon. The powder will help stop the growth of the fungus.
  • With a highly developed mold, it is better to transplant the flower into another container. Necessarily during the procedure, the rotting parts of the roots are cut off, treated with a solution of potassium permanganate.

Only competent care of the plant, taking care of it will help to avoid the appearance of a lime layer on the soil:

  1. Water indoor flowers depending on the period of the plant's life. During the growing season, moisten from two to three times a week, well wetting the soil in a pot. If the top layer is still wet, then it is better to postpone watering. Water for irrigation is prepared in advance. She must be room temperature, settled. You can drive it to soften through a layer of peat.
  2. Plants need a constant supply fresh air. When airing the room, make sure that the flower pots are not in a draft. sunbathing necessary for all "green inhabitants" of the house. But their duration is determined for each plant individually.
  3. A plant transplant is organized when it gets sick or the pot has become small for it. The procedure will help improve the growing conditions of the indoor flower.
  4. Disinfection of a new container and soil prepared for a plant is required. After all, this will lead to a stop in the development of pathogenic flora inside the container. The drainage layer will help the removal excess moisture from a pot.

In addition, in the room where your favorite plants "live", you must observe temperature regime, ventilate them as needed.
