Hi friends! sometime last year I talked about our bedroom, namely the ones we bought at the flea store here in Cologne. if you look at the photographs of that time, you can see that. these chests of drawers and wardrobes have moved to a new location from the previous rented apartment for which they were purchased. but when we moved in, it became clear that black was completely unsuitable for our new home, and we promised ourselves to repaint all black cabinets and chests of drawers in light color. last week a miracle happened, and there was time for painting. now watch the malm chest of drawers go from jet black to snow white.

we must immediately admit that on the “before” option, we had two chests of drawers together - one wide and the other narrow. in the process of a violent spring desire to get rid of unnecessary things, we realized that we didn’t really need a small narrow chest of drawers, and we sold it on the site of private ads. therefore, the “after” option includes only one chest of drawers.

step 0. preparation

for painting you will need the following materials:

1. varnish two in one (water-soluble, with a primer). we used white lacquer from Alpina (matte)
2. paint tray and roller (selected specifically for the selected varnish, since each varnish needs a specific roller)
3. sandpaper (fine)
4. paper tape for painting windows and lots and lots of patience!

step 1. very often, preparation for work takes more time than the project itself. That's exactly what happened with the painting of the chest of drawers. therefore, before you start painting it, you will have to completely sort out all the drawers, empty them of things and secure the floor from splashes of paint. Sounds easy, but takes a lot of time and effort.

step 2. after that, the chest of drawers must be thoroughly cleaned of dirt, dust and greasy stripes. in order for the varnish to adhere well to the surface, you can even sand it with sandpaper. there are a lot of lessons and examples on the Internet on how to paint ikea furniture. they all (not without reason) say that surface preparation is the most important and time-consuming task. From experience, we have done just that. those places that remain unpainted (for example, inside a chest of drawers) must be carefully pasted over with special paper tape.

step 3. After that, the most interesting thing begins - it's working with paint. in order to achieve a smooth finish, you need to use a very small amount of paint, but apply many layers.

step 4. already after the first coat of paint, even the boxes look much lighter and more interesting. like the frame of a chest of drawers, they were also cleaned of dirt and neatly covered with paper tape.

step 5. if the paint turns out to be thick enough, it can be diluted with water, but it will still have to be painted over large quantity layers.

step 6. after 5-6 coats of paint, our once-black chest of drawers really turned into a snow-white sheet of paper.

chest of drawers ready! even we ourselves did not expect that the white color would bring so much light and expand the room. it remains only to release the piece of furniture from paper tape and put it in its proper place.
