How to drill a hole in a glass jar. How to make a hole in a glass bottle with your own hands

Highly original lamps obtained from figured and colored glass bottles from drinks. Several attempts made at the time to drill the bottles ended in failure. The methods of drilling glass came across some exotic ones and usually ended with a long crack in the glass from the place of drilling. But if you use a special drill on glass, everything worked out. To drill a beautiful rectangular bottle from a good drink, a drill with a carbide insert was purchased (

Features of drilling a glass bottle

1. The drill fixed in the electric drill is directed strictly perpendicular to the point of drilling the bottle and with a little pressure we wait for the first glass crumbs to appear.

Glass drill

2. Drilling at maximum speed is not necessary, the drill is afraid of overheating.

3. Stop drilling every 20-25 seconds and remove glass chips. At the same time, the tip of the drill will cool.

4. When the tip of the drill passes through the thickness of the glass, the sound of drilling will change somewhat and the drill feed (pressure) should be reduced to a minimum.

5. After a through passage with a glass thickness drill, we rinse the bottle in running water.

6. When drilling, it is better to observe safety precautions - work with gloves, goggles and respiratory protection.

In this way, several glass bottles were successfully drilled with their own hands, from which original night lights powered by 220 volts were made.

How to drill a hole in glass bottle when making a lamp. MK

I am often asked HOW to make a hole in the bottle to create the base of the lamp.

Here short master class like I do.

* E14 bulb holder

* electric cord with switch

* Matte ENERGY SAVING light bulb with E14 base, power 7-8W

* Perk for metal

* Drill for glass and ceramics

* Jar of water

I am often asked how to make a hole for a cord in a bottle.

To do this, you need to purchase a special drill for glass and ceramics in a hardware store. For the Hole, I use a #6 or #8 pen drill.

You will also need a drill or screwdriver.

Here are some pictures with the materials you will need.

We take a bottle and wrap the place where the hole will be located with masking tape 2-3 times.

Here's what should happen:

First you make a hole, then you decorate the bottle, then you put everything together.

Now a few words about bulb holders.

Cartridges are of two types "without a skirt" and with a "skirt". We need cartridges with a skirt and a mounting ring.

Now we take a bottle cap (I was not free, so a regular cap is taken as an example).

We bring the cord through the neck of the bottle.

We connect the cord and cartridge.

We pass the cartridge through the hole in the lid. The lower "skirt" of the cartridge will not allow the cover to fall off. For reliability, in a circle of the skirt, we drip from the glue of the gun and fasten the lid to the skirt.

We close the bottle with a cap. All of our cartridge is securely fixed.

With the upper clamping ring, you subsequently attach the lampshade to the cartridge.

Your fantasy of decoration, bottles and lampshades remains in your hands! Be creative and you will definitely succeed!

If you need to make a hole in a glass bottle, then you do not need to buy special equipment. This can be done at home with your own hands. Drilling can be done with both a conventional drill and a screwdriver.

It is preferable to use a screwdriver, as it has less speed (high speed is not needed to drill glass). It is recommended to use a drill with pobedite inserts, but if it is not available, then you can take a regular drill for metal work, for example, in this manual, a drill with a diameter of 8.2 mm from P6M5 steel is used. Do not believe those who say that you need to use only victorious drills and ordinary drills will not work. Now we will verify this.

How to make a hole in a glass bottle, you can find out by watching the video:

So, to drill a hole in the bottle you will need:
- The bottle itself, for example, from wine;
- Stand for the bottle, so that the bottle does not roll when drilling a hole;
- Paper tape;
- conventional drill or screwdriver;
- Ordinary drill;
- Water for cooling;
- Drill
- And a syringe.

It is necessary to fix the bottle from rotation. For this, a stand was made in advance from ordinary wooden bars: two long and two short, fastening them together with nails. If it is not possible to make such a stand, then you can make a small depression in the ground if you drill on the street, or put two bricks or something else on the sides. In general, it already depends on your imagination.

First thing to do- this is to wrap paper tape (several layers) around the bottle approximately where you plan to make a hole. After that, we put a mark on the adhesive tape with a felt-tip pen - the center of the future hole.

The most important thing when drilling a hole is not to press hard on the drill, as the glass may crack and the bottle will be damaged.

Getting Started
We drill in stages, during breaks adding a few drops of water from a syringe into the hole. This is necessary so that both the drill and the glass bottle do not overheat.

To avoid cracks inside bottles, it is necessary to monitor the pressure and not squeeze the drill, especially at the end of the work.
When the drill has passed through, you need to carefully drill the hole, making light rotational movements. This will make the cut hole smoother.

The hole is drilled, remove the tape and look at the result. This hole was made using a standard drill with a diameter of 8.2 mm and a conventional drill. It took 10-15 minutes to complete the job.

When making a homemade shade for a lamp or candle, it may be necessary to drill a central hole in a glass bulb. Perhaps you need to make a hole in the glass for other purposes. You can drill everything, glass jars, bottles or other containers, beads, glass doors.

A diamond drill (drill) is suitable for drilling small diameter holes.

A crown is a special circular drill, unlike a drill, it drills in a circle without touching the central section. Due to this, the crown is suitable for drilling large diameter holes.

We seal the drilling site with adhesive tape crosswise to reduce glass chipping. It is advisable to glue the inner side with tape, so the edges of the hole will be smoother and they will not have to be sanded for a long time.

Mark the center and start drilling. If you use special crowns, then they have a spring-loaded pilot drill in the center.

To use such a tool, you first need to drill the center with a drill, and then continue drilling with a crown.

Other crowns may not have a center. Of course, you can drill, it will only be more difficult to start in right place. It is more convenient to do this on a stationary drilling machine, but in last resort a screwdriver will do.

I mentioned the screwdriver for one reason. When working with glass, water must be added to the drilling point. Otherwise, the glass will crumble a lot and small fragments will create problems for you. Close to the topic, the article is a homemade drilling machine.

In addition, the tool must work at low speed, here haste will not lead to anything good.

Therefore, using a screwdriver is more convenient, and most importantly safer.

Take your time, do not press hard on the drill, you can break the product.

After drilling is completed, the edges are processed with sandpaper.

However, if you used water and sealed the drilling site with adhesive tape, then as a rule the hole is obtained with smooth edges.

To hang a decorative ceiling, a rope is inserted into the hole and a knot is tied inside.

Tools

If it is necessary to drill glass surfaces, many people prefer to entrust this work to professionals, turn to special services, spend money, and most importantly, time. How to drill glass at home and how you can drill glass, we will learn further.

Varieties and features of glass

The formation of glass occurs during supercooling of the melt from several components, while the rate of this process is quite high and the crystallization process does not have time to complete.

Glass is a fragile material that is often used for human needs. Glass is formed at a fairly high temperature from 200 to 2500 degrees. Not all glasses are transparent, this property is not common characteristic of this material.

In relation to the main material that is used during the manufacture of glass, glasses are distinguished:

Depending on the type of application, there are:

  • quartz type glass - made by melting quartzite or rock crystal, given material it happens naturally, it is formed during a lightning strike at the location of quartz deposits;
  • optical type glass is used to make lenses or prisms;
  • high impact resistance chemical substances and temperature fluctuations are characterized by glass of a chemical type;
  • Industrial glass is widely used in the manufacture of a variety of things that people use.

Industrial glass is:

  • potassium-sodium type - characterized by a low melting point, it is easily obtained from it different figures, has a clean and light structure;
  • potassium-calcium type - has a high hardness and is difficult to melt, does not have a pronounced luster;
  • lead type - it is similar to crystal, very fragile and shiny, is more expensive, has a lot of weight, but at the same time is quite soft;
  • borosilicate type - resistant to temperature changes, foreign substances, rather expensive.

In relation to the scope of use, glasses are distinguished:

  • window,
  • tare,
  • radiation resistant,
  • fiberglass,
  • protective,
  • crockery,
  • crystal,
  • thermometric,
  • heat-resistant,
  • medical,
  • heat-resistant,
  • electroflasks,
  • electrovacuum,
  • optical,
  • chemical,
  • quartzoid.

Varieties of drills for drilling glass

The process of drilling glass requires a good, and, most importantly, suitable drill and a material that will instantly cool the glass during the drilling process. Consider the main types of drills that are suitable for glass:

  • a drill in the form of a spear or a feather - made of hard alloys, the diameter of such devices is from 3 to 12 mm, if you have working skills, drilling glass with such a drill is quite possible, but you cannot do without the formation of small chips;
  • drills in the form of a spear with the presence of diamond coating - they are distinguished by softer drilling, there are no chips;
  • tubular drill or round look used to cut circles or rings on glass surfaces, this process is most conveniently carried out using a drilling machine;
  • diamond-coated brass type glass requires mandatory cooling, through the supply of water or turpentine;
  • a tubular diamond-type drill is used to drill a hole in glass, it looks like a crown with a shank, the end of the crown has a diamond coating, it requires cooling.

Preparing glass for drilling

1. Before you start drilling glass, you should prepare the surface for this process.

2. Using alcohol or turpentine, be sure to degrease the surface, and then wipe with a dry cloth.

3. It is not allowed to slip or shrink the glass sheet on the surface.

4. The glass sheet must be placed on the base.

5. It is better to mark the drilling point with construction tape or a marker.

6. In the absence of skills in working with glass drilling, it is better to practice on small fragments so as not to eventually spoil the material.

7. Drilling glass takes a long time, do not press hard on it to speed up the process.

8. Hold the drill at right angles to the glass surface. Don't drill one hole at a time, stop periodically to let the glass cool down.

9. At the end of drilling, when the hole is almost ready, you should turn the glass over and drill a hole from the back side. This procedure will help to avoid chips or cracks and make a hole of the desired shape.

10. To remove small roughness or irregularities on the glass surface, use fine sandpaper.

How to drill glass with a regular drill

To complete this process, you must have:

  • drill, which is used for drilling metal or ceramic surfaces;
  • screwdriver or low-speed drill;
  • plasticine,
  • turpentine,
  • alcohol solution.

The glass must lie on a completely flat surface. Pay attention to the position of the glass, the edges must not overhang and the glass must not wobble.

On a screwdriver or drill, set the minimum rotation speed. Insert the glass and check whether the device breaks the glass, if there is a large runout, it is recommended to replace the drill.

Using cotton wool and alcohol, degrease the glass and make a recess from plasticine in place of the future hole. Pour turpentine into it and start the drilling process. To avoid the appearance of a crack, do not exert great effort during this process. Gently and without pressure, hold the device above the glass.

The minimum revolutions for drilling per minute are 250 and the maximum 1000 cycles.

How to drill glass at home with sand

At a time when there were no screwdrivers and drills used this way glass drilling. In order to drill glass with sand, you will need:

  • sand,
  • gasoline,
  • tin or lead
  • gas burner,
  • a metal vessel, preferably a mug.

Be sure to degrease the surface with gasoline, and pour a hill of wet sand into the place of the proposed drilling. Next, using a sharp object, make a funnel of the same size as the hole.

Pour the previously prepared mixture of tin or lead into this form, after a few minutes, remove the sand and remove the frozen part of the glass, which should easily move away from the surface.

To heat lead or tin, use a metal vessel and a gas burner. If there is no gas burner, replace it with an ordinary stove.

Such a hole is perfectly even and does not require additional processing efforts.

How to drill glass with your own hands using a homemade drill

The drill used in the process consists of a diamond roller, which is placed in the simplest glass cutter and a metal rod.

In the rod, you need to cut a special hole into which the diamond roller is placed. The roller is installed in such a way that it is motionless.

Attach the drill to a drill or screwdriver and start drilling.

This drill is a modification of conventional diamond-coated drills, so if it is not possible to buy such a drill, make it yourself.

Another option for manufacturing a drill involves drilling glass, with a small hole diameter of up to 50 mm. Take any ordinary drill. Turn on gas burner, clamp the drill with pliers and hold it over the jet of flame for several minutes. When the tip of the drill turns white, cool it quickly by lowering it into sealing wax. After it cools, remove the drill and remove drops of sealing wax from the surface, if any. This glass has become tempered, and perfectly cope with the drilling of glass.

1. A little honey or turpentine should be applied to the place where the hole will be drilled in order to prevent cracks and splits.

2. Do not press the drill from above.

3. The interval between drillings is 5-10 seconds. It is advisable to dip the drill into a vessel with water during a break to prevent the glass from melting.

4. Do not swing the drill from one side to the other.

5. If possible, it is better to use a screwdriver, this item is more gentle, as it has low speed.

6. The cost of drilling glass in professional setting is from $ 10, therefore, using these tips, you can save a lot of money.

7. Not only alcohol, but also acetone is perfect for degreasing the surface.

8. While working with a drill, do not forget about safety, wear goggles and gloves

9. The distance between the edge of fragile glass must be at least 1.5 cm, for ordinary glass 2.5 cm.

10. The best surface for working with glass is wood.

Working with glass with a glass cutter

1. To make a hole in the glass large sizes or unusual shape, a glass cutter will do.

2. Using a felt-tip pen or marker, make a markup on which drilling will be carried out.

3. When working with a glass cutter, you should not make sudden movements, the pressure should be smooth and have the same force.

4. Use the handle of the glass cutter to tap on the glass so that the cut part falls out.

5. To remove excess glass, use special tongs.

6. Pay attention to the condition of the tool before starting work. The location of the roller should be central, it should rotate smoothly and evenly.

Unconventional ways to drill glass

1. To drill carbide type glass, coolant must be prepared. To do this, take acetic acid and dissolve aluminum alum in it. In their absence, mix turpentine with camphor in a ratio of one to one. Treat the glass with one of the solutions, and only then start drilling.

2. If the drill is missing, use copper wire to be inserted into the drill. In this case, drilling takes place using a specially prepared solution. One part camphor and two parts turpentine, to this mixture add a coarse-grained type powder from sandpaper. Lay the mixture in the place where you want to drill a hole and start working.

3. There is another way using this solution. Use a metal piece of tubing that should be inserted into the drill. Make a plasticine ring and attach it to the glass surface. The height of the ring is 10 mm and the diameter is 50 mm. In the recess, apply a solution of turpentine, camphor and emery powder.

4. Take a tube made of aluminum, copper or duralumin, the length of which is about 5 cm. Drive a wooden plug into one end, and cut out the teeth with a hexagonal file at the other. Screw the self-tapping screw into the end on which the wooden plug is located, saw off its head. On the inner and outer parts of the glass, attach two circles previously cut out of cardboard, the diameter of which, such as the diameter of the future hole. Lay the glass on the rubber surface and sprinkle abrasive powder on it. The place where the self-tapping screw is attached, with a cut off head, put it in a drill or a screwdriver, treat the reverse side of the so-called drill with turpentine solution. Drill the third part of the hole on one side, and then turn the glass over and finish the job.

How to make a hole in a glass bottle with your own hands

If you need to make a hole in a glass bottle, then you do not need to buy special equipment. This can be done at home with your own hands. Drilling can be done with both a conventional drill and a screwdriver.

- The bottle itself, for example, from wine;

— Stand for the bottle, so that the bottle does not roll when drilling a hole;

- Regular drill or screwdriver;

— Water for cooling;

Getting Started

We drill in stages, during breaks adding a few drops of water from a syringe into the hole. This is necessary so that both the drill and the glass bottle do not overheat.

When the drill has passed through, you need to carefully drill the hole, making light rotational movements. This will make the cut hole smoother.

A glass bottle is a great base for many creative projects. She looks interesting and stylish. But, unlike plastic, cut it without professional tools seems to be not easy at all ... But not for those who are familiar with this incredible way!

You will need:

  • glass bottle
  • soldering iron
  • Marker

Step 1: Prepare to cut

Using a permanent marker, outline the outline of the future hole. If your project allows for a free-form slit, try to place it so that at least one side falls on the fold of the glass. This will make cutting much easier than on a straight surface. Secure the bottle firmly. It is most convenient to do this as shown in the photo.

Step 2: Start cutting

In order to gently split the glass, attach the soldering iron to the beginning of the line along the fold of the bottle and hold for a few seconds. Then move the soldering iron a few millimeters. At this point, the glass should crack. If no cracks form, return the soldering iron back. Slowly move along the line, a crack in the glass should form as you move the soldering iron. If at some point the glass stops cutting, heat the opposite edge of the crack.

Step 3: Rotate the crack

When you reach the corner, carefully flip the soldering iron over so that it follows the line you marked. It is best to form an even angle exactly at the place of the inflection of the glass. In some cases, the glass may crack unevenly, so you need to be prepared for the fact that the hole will have to be made a little wider. Or just have one more bottle in stock. Of course, this cutting method is not suitable for the formation of very small holes.

Step 4: Question with corners

In some cases, when cutting perpendicular segments, the angle is formed independently. Just practice on different bottles, and over time you will gain the necessary skill.

Step 5: Finish cutting

At some point, the crack may stop and not move according to the usual pattern. In some cases, two different cracks may form along the bottom edge of the hole, which do not converge into one. Help with a soldering iron, and if necessary, press on the glass from the inside of the bottle by placing the handle of a knife or screwdriver into it.

Step 6: Take out the excess

Carefully remove the cut off part of the bottle. If you are afraid of cutting yourself on the edge of the glass, use gloves. If everything went according to plan, it will turn out to cut out exactly the part that was originally drawn.

Step 7: Other Holes That Can Be Made With This Method

You will need

  • - drill;
  • - diamond drill on glass;
  • - a copper tube of the required diameter;
  • - sand;
  • - diesel fuel or gasoline.

Instruction

The first way to make a hole in a glass bottle is to use a drill. Take a diamond drill of the diameter it should be. Wear safety goggles and gloves - the smallest fragments can injure your eyes and hands. Secure the bottle in a vise. If they are not at home, ask an assistant to hold the vessel tightly. Don't forget to supply it protective equipment. Lubricate the drill with clean machine oil. Attach the drill to the glass. Press lightly and press the power button. One or two seconds is enough for a hole to appear.

The second way to make a hole in came to us from those times, only rare lucky ones owned drills and punchers. Everyone else made holes in with copper tube filled with sand. Take a metal gut of the desired diameter. Fill it with sand about half way. Moisten the bottle and the end of the tube with water. Have someone help you and hold the vessel firmly while you work with it. Press the copper gut to the surface very tightly. Try not to leave the vessel during everything. Rotate the tube by holding it between your palms until a hole appears. This usually takes three to ten minutes.

The third way to make a hole is to carefully chip off the bottom. It is very important to be safe here and wear thick gloves made of non-combustible material, as you will have to deal with fire. The procedure cannot be carried out indoors, only on outdoors! Prepare a bucket of water. She must be cold. Wrap the vessel with a cloth soaked in gasoline or diesel fuel. Put it on and set it on fire. Wait for the material to burn through. With gloved hands, grab the bottle by the neck and dip into the liquid. The bottom will fall off on its own.

People often wonder how to drill a hole in a bottle. With the skills and the right tools, it's not that hard to do. You will not need as much time as it might seem at first glance. Evaluate your capabilities when choosing one of the methods and get to work.

Instruction

Wrap the bottle you want to make a hole in with masking tape 2-3 times. Please note that there is no seam at the drilling site. Mark the drilling site with a cross. Take a special glass drill and (looks like a triangular arrowhead). Start drilling by dipping the drill in water. Drill at medium speed carefully, without pressure, keeping the drill straight. Moisten the tool with water and drip regularly on the drilling site. To supply water, you can use a tube with a clip or a medical dropper. Instead of water, you can use a mixture of 1 part turpentine with 1 part camphor. Ream the hole after the drill has passed through with gentle twisting movements to make the edges smoother. Finish the cut edge with coarse sandpaper or a file.

Mark the future hole with a felt-tip pen. Make a plasticine rim around the drilling site. Take a diamond core drill (looks like a straw). Start drilling by sharply pressing the trigger of the drill to make the drill easier to hook on the surface of the glass. Pour water into the plasticine rim. Drill at low speed. Cool the cut, keeping it constantly in water so that the glass does not burst. Rinse the groove obtained during operation from glass dust and splinters. The closer to the end of the work, the less pressure on the drill and the lower the speed of rotation of the drill.

Take the steel drill. Heat it up to white heat and harden it in mercury or sealing wax. Sharpen it. Soak the drill in a mixture of camphor and turpentine. Insert the drill into the brace and quickly drill through the bottle.

Take a triangular file and insert it into a drill. Dip it in turpentine and carefully start drilling.

Related videos

For decorative or practical purposes, it is sometimes necessary to make a hole in a glass bottle. This is not as difficult as it might seem, but first practice on unnecessary dishes so as not to ruin a rare collectible bottle.

You will need

  • - air gun;
  • - drill with a diamond or hardened steel drill;
  • - turpentine;
  • - sulphuric acid;
  • - water;
  • - sand or clay;
  • - a template made of wood, foam, glass, metal or other material;
  • - emery powder.

Instruction

Most fast way: take with a well-charged cylinder. Stand at a distance of several meters, carefully aim and shoot at the bottle. The ejected ball will pierce the bottle through and through without breaking it. Please note that there will be two holes, and a rather small diameter.

To drill into bottle hole the desired diameter, first prepare a device for securely fixing the dishes, for example, a box in which they will fit tightly. Take a diamond drill for ceramics and very carefully, without pressing, drill. Be sure to consider the cooling system. It can be constantly flowing water (you will need an assistant here) or a specially prepared cooler. To make it, make a template out of wood, foam, or other material by drilling a hole the desired diameter, and attach it with wax to bottle. Fill the hole with emery powder (you can get it from sandpaper or an abrasive wheel) mixed with turpentine.

To drill hole in glass bottle steel drill, before use, heat it white and soak in sulfuric acid.

To drill hole large diameter, take a tube of non-ferrous metal (aluminum, brass, copper, bronze) 2.5-5 cm long and use it as a drill. Attach a circle of foam, glass, wood, metal or other material of the required diameter to the glass; the tube will rest against it when drilling. Pour emery moistened with water into the open end of the tube and drill slowly, at low speeds. Make sure that the emery paste is always between the edges of the tube and the glass.

If you want to do without drilling, use clay or fine sand. Thoroughly wash the surface of grease and dirt with acetone, alcohol or gasoline. Pour wet sand or clay, mixed to a doughy state, in the form of a hill about 10 mm high. Make a funnel with a stick or other tool, while the diameter of the translucent glass inside the hole should match the diameter of the desired hole. Melt lead, tin or other solder in a metal jar, pour it into the resulting hole. The hole will turn out with smooth edges, but learn that this method is suitable for glass no thicker than 3 mm.
