What are the names of horses. How to name a horse: we select a suitable nickname

HORSE NAME

In factories, nicknames for horses are given according to certain rules. This is the official name of the horse, which is recorded in the stud book, passport, and, as a rule, is preserved for life. Common nouns are usually used (Huguenot, Geologist, Mastic, Granite, Ashes), but there are proper names - famous people and characters, as well as adjectives (Sharp, Lucky), place names.

The trouble is that people at stud farms are often simply illiterate and write the name of the horse with errors. In the stable of the CSKA Air Force, for example, there were horses Design, Gepotisa, Retual.

Traditionally, Thoroughbreds and trotters receive nicknames that begin with the same letter as their mother's name and contain at least one letter of their father's name (Groza and Grand Low - Geologist). In everyday life, the horse's name is simpler, at home (Gosha, Bunka).

Often a person's personal attitude towards a foal is manifested in the way he names the newborn. When Analoga gave birth to a foal, he was extremely ugly. And they named it "in honor" of the caustic chemical compound Aniline. A game of fate - the foal grew up and became an outstanding horse, "crowned three times."

A lot of horses are born in private farms. Peasants often do not puzzle over the nickname, but they call it simpler - Mashka, Vaska, Buyan, Gray.

The name of a horse, of course, means a lot in its fate. Yevgeny Matuzov (KTB "Outpost") had a very interesting mare, a beauty. Her name was Midnight. A rare, romantic name. However, the horse seemed to be jinxed. She could not work, and walked only at night, during the day she had to stand in the stall, as she had a terrible allergy to the sun.

As an anecdote, they say that during the competition they announced: “Athlete such and such is performing on a Stick.”

One of my friends bought a horse named Okhlamon (“ohla” - a crowd (Greek). It’s a shame to be Okhlamon in life! No respect. The girl called the horse Monya, but for the rest of his life he acquired some kind of contemptuous nickname, and his fate was not easy.

In the end - the name, of course, is not the main thing in the horse. But it undoubtedly leaves its mark on her life and on the attitude of a person towards her.

(According to the book by E. Rybas "Horse in the country")

TRADITION OF COMING OUT NAMES

To folk origins, the tradition of giving nicknames to horses goes back to ancient times (up to the 20th century, they were called by names). Previously, nicknames were assigned mainly according to some qualities of horses. So, Bucephalus in Alexander the Great is bull-headed, because it was a mighty horse with a wide forehead. The horse of Emperor Caligula, introduced by him into the Senate, had the nickname Incitatus, which means fleet. The ancestor of the purebred horse breed Eclipse ("eclipse") is so named because he was born on the day of a solar eclipse. Horses were called by the name (or surname) of the owner, as well as by breed: the historical Darley Arabian, Godolphin Barb, Beyerley Turk - the founders of the thoroughbred riding breed (and the Arab, Barbary, Turkish breeds themselves). In the first word of their nicknames, they carried the names of the owners.

Nicknames characterizing the qualities of horses were assigned at the Khrenovsky stud farm under Count A.G. Orlov-Chesmensky and manager V.I. Shishkin. Moreover, they were not given immediately at the birth of a foal, but only after tests in Moscow, when the bright feature inherent in the horse stood out in particular. For example, Barbarian, Hot-tempered, Kind, Dashing, Fierce, Cute, Indomitable, Ferocious, Humble, Successful, Cozy, Praised, Grasp, Jasper. By factory nicknames, it is so easy to imagine horses - their height, exterior, character: Ah, Bogatyr, Giant, Eyeball, Golovan, Heavy, Catch up, Beauty, Okay, Light, Lazy, Flyer, Wide, Elegant, Invincible, Sloppy, Huge, Simple , Frisky, Dull.

According to individual characteristics, in the 18th century, nicknames were also assigned to combat horses in Russia. So, the cuirassiers of the Little Russian regiment rode horses, referred to not only by nouns, but also by quality adjectives in their appearance, suit, disposition: Raven, Gorbonos, Kashchei, Dancer, Skorokhod, Ugomon, Gypsy, Shkilet or Vigorous, Faithful Kind, Oblique, Curly , Beloved, Red, Hasty.

Peasants came up with nicknames for their horses most ingenuously: usually - by suit, less often - by the density of the mane and tail. Belonoga, Whiteleg, Buckwheat, Bulanka, Burka, Brown, Voronets, Voronko, Bay, Grivach, Grivun, Asterisk, Brown, Karyuha, Brown, Kutsy, Liska, Coot, Bald, Mukhorty, Pegash, Pied, Savras, Savraska, Sivka, Grey, Serko, Grey, Solovko, Chalka, Roan, Chubarka. There are a lot of nicknames like these now.

In our country, in purebred and trotting horse breeding, it is customary to call a newborn foal so that the word includes the initial letters of the nicknames of the mother and father, and from the mother - at the beginning of the word. For example, Fakir from Regency and Fantasia, Holguin from Low Hanover and Olta. In half-breed horse breeding, it is often the other way around - the initial letter from the father's nickname: Flight from Knife and Epic, Boston from Better Days and Bonds.

(From the book by T.K. Livanova "Horses")

A LITTLE ABOUT NAMES

There are certain rules for assigning nicknames to horses. The name of the foal is given by the breeder, but in case of violation of these rules, the All-Russian Research Institute of Horse Breeding can change it, of course, informing the breeder about this. Thus, it is forbidden to use the nicknames of stallions and queens, personal names of people without their permission, words of an offensive and obscene nature, nicknames from the international list of protection. The nickname should not contain more than 16 (for Oryol trotters) - 27 characters (for thoroughbred riding). For foals of the Trakehner, Arabian, Thoroughbred riding and trotting breeds, the name should begin with the first letter of the mother's name, and it is desirable that in the middle of it there be the initial letter of the father's name.

In the Hanoverian, Holstein, Terek, Budyonnovskaya and Don breeds, on the contrary, nicknames begin with the initial letter of the father's nickname and in the middle have the initial letter of the mother's nickname. Trakens used to have nicknames that began with the first letter of their father's nickname, but now the rules require that the first letter of the nickname is "passed down" from the mother. The nicknames of the foals of the Akhal-Teke breed can begin both with the initial letter of the father's nickname and with the initial letter of the mother's nickname.

In accordance with the international agreement on breeding and racing, in each country there is a list of protective nicknames that should never be repeated in their breed. This list includes horses that have shown outstanding results in racetrack trials or in breeding use.

(According to the Internet)

The choice of a nickname for a horse is often based on its external characteristics and physical data. The name can become the most important factor on which the fate of the animal will depend.

How important is it to choose the right name for a horse?

For a horse, you need to choose the right nickname, because, like a human name, it carries some information, special characteristics and influence on the future. For these reasons, the name of the animal is chosen only consciously. For example, a domestic horse that is useful in the household should be obedient and meek, with a short temper. Accordingly, her name is given an easy pronunciation. You can call such horses Quiet, Smirny.

Another meaning is taken by the names of tribal horses, in which the nickname should characterize the entire pedigree. Usually, the information that is put in the name indicates the reputation of the plant, heredity in the breeding line. In this case, the breeder needs to be aware of the rules provided for such situations.

Rules for choosing a nickname for breeding horses

For breeding horses, the name is chosen to accurately reflect its pedigree. Be sure the initial letter must be the same as the name of the stallion's mother, and in the middle of the name must contain the first letter of the name of the second parent.

For example, if a stallion is born from a mare named Insidious Lady and from a father named Arabesque, then the animal can be called Karagez, where the first letter “K” is on behalf of the mother and the middle letter “A” is on behalf of the father.

For half-blooded horses, names are chosen according to somewhat different, more relaxed rules. In this case, the first letter of the stallion's nickname will be the initial letter of the father's name. The names of horses participating in high-level sporting events may also contain information about the stud where they were born, or about the stable or club where they trained and grew up.

Names for sport horses

If you look inside the stud book of a horse of any sports breed, it becomes clear that earlier the nicknames of animals, although not always, characterized the clear characteristics of the owners. Names were chosen to emphasize the merits and individuality of the horse.

Today, instead of romanticism, pragmatism has come to replace it. Loud and bright names of animals are not so often heard, now it is customary to select them “according to the dictionary”, taking into account the need to introduce suitable letters. This approach is the result of industrial horse breeding, where the name is perceived more as a factory number and stamp, rather than carries an important meaning.

On the territory of Russia, they somehow try to preserve the sonority of nicknames for horses, while abroad animals are called long and awkward names. It is especially fashionable to “attribute” the names of stables or factories, owners, companies to horses. Such a horse nickname can tell little about the animal itself, and it is rarely possible to understand from the nickname who is in front of you: a horse or a horse.

Double nicknames

Usually double nicknames go to breeding animals - it allows you to highlight the characteristics of both parents or the features of the team, if this is an animal of a sports breed. More often, a double nickname is entered exclusively in the animal's passport, but in reality they call it a diminutive name. Such double nicknames are considered very popular today: El Cid, South Wind, Mini River, Mr. Gray.

Usually, the nickname contains up to 16 letters, sometimes it is allowed to call the animal by a name, where there are about 27 letters, more - you can’t!

Name depending on individual characteristics

Usually the nickname for the horse is selected based on its individual characteristics. It is believed that the selection of a name according to this scheme is the easiest. Often based on the appearance, character and main color of the animal.

There are three main colors accepted today: red, black, bay. There can be quite a lot of colors, in fact, as well as various spots, marks on parts of the body. For example, a mare named Asterisk may have a spot on her forehead, the shade of which differs from the color of the main suit.

The mass of the animal is no less important, and the behavior of the horse is of particular importance. If the foal is active and frisky, almost does not sit still, such names as Veterok, Element, Energy, but not Quiet or Quiet, will suit him. If the horse is squat, it can get such a name as the Kid, high - Goliath, Gulliver.

They also pay attention to the color of the coat, they can call horses by such names: Chernysh, Gypsy, Coal, Bay, Redhead, Squirrel, Snowball, Crow.

Most Popular

Especially popular earlier and today are nicknames that are sonorous and easy to pronounce. Often, after any films appear on the screens, such “favorite” names of heroes are assigned to their animals. So there are horses with the names Sirius, Belyanka, Gray, Martha, Karat, Bella, Aramis, Rapunzel, Shrek, Fiona, Bond, Boni, Athos.

Depending on the origin, horses are given such interesting and amazing nicknames:

  • Russians. Berry, Varyag, Dawn, Clear, Burushka, Bogatyr, Dream, Snowstorm, Swallow, Raven, Yakhont, Ashes.
  • Arabic. Sahara, Bombay, Narsil, Vizier, Nuga, Dastan, Leila, Jin, Remira, Zephyr, Osman.

Forbidden names and nicknames of celebrities

If the purchase of a horse is carried out for amateur riding, then in this case only personal preferences, imagination and taste are important. But it’s another matter if the horse was bought to participate in competitions and the horse has a well-known pedigree used for breeding purposes, which is of pedigree value.

You cannot name an animal whose name contains obscene words, as well as well-known names of stallions included in the international protected list.

Most of the horses went down in history together with their owners. Many have become popular due to their sports victories:

  • Incitation. Horse of the Roman Emperor Caligula. The emperor appointed his horse as a senator, due to which he became famous.
  • Bucephalus. Alexander the Great rode on a horse, who managed to tame the animal, reaching 11 years from birth.
  • Hyperion. A stallion born at Lord Derby's famous stud. More than once the animal won in sports competitions.
  • Copenhagen. The horse was carried in the saddle by the Duke of Wellington. Winner of many sports competitions.
  • Weigold. Multiple winner of international competitions. A mare born in Oldenburg.

Today on the Internet, choosing a name for a pet is not a problem. In the search bar, they drive in “horse nickname generator”, and follow the link. A random name can please the owner, and you don’t have to rack your brains to choose a suitable nickname.

Also, when choosing a name, other criteria are followed. For example, horses are named after precious stones, for example, Amethysts, Ambers, Diamonds are found in the stable. Or they call animals, giving them the names of natural phenomena or winds - Typhoon, Sarma, Blizzard, Bora, Samum, Breeze.

Farmers often turn to:

  • stars and constellations (Orion, Sirius, Andromeda, Cassiopeia);
  • famous people (Nelson, Aurora, Yarmak);
  • mythical heroes (Perseus, Artemis, Athena, Zeus).

There are many more ideas and options. The main thing when choosing to include fantasy, thanks to which you will be able to choose a completely unique, unusual nickname for your animal.

Some horse breeders are ready to share their secrets about how they named the horses in the farmstead:

Sergey, 41 years old. I can offer some amazing nicknames for horses. On my farm there is Valencia, which I affectionately call Valya. You may also like such names for horses as Flamingo, Feat, Amazon, Dayana, Gloria, Boni, Pampey, Bryonia. Fedor, 37 years old. My mare's name is Sarabi, and I named my horse Fierce (his character is so restive, the suit is dark, appropriate). He named another smoky horse by the color of the suit - Dymka. I already know what I will name the future stallions - Emerald, Ramses, La Bayadère.

The horse has been a faithful companion of man for more than one thousand years. Horses helped to cultivate the land, transported goods, participated in wars, were a symbol of prosperity and wealth, a source of pride. Animals not only have unique characters, but also names. Choosing a nickname for a newborn foal is not always the easiest thing to do - you need to take into account many nuances, the character and color of the animal.

The right nickname or zoonym for a horse is no less important than a name for a person. An outbred foal or a foal with no further breeding value can be called by any name you like.

However, for sports horses and horses of breeding value, there is a special regulation for the formation of a foal name.

Nickname formations in Russia

In Russia, the names for the following breeds of horses begin with the first letter of the mother's name, and the first letter of the father's name should be in the middle (Malpost - father Present, mother - Miropia). This is the rule for these breeds:

  • Arabian Thoroughbred,
  • Trakenenskaya,
  • English Thoroughbred (English Horse),
  • Oryol, American and Russian trotters.

The name for the foals of the following breeds is selected in the opposite way and begins with the first letter of the father's name, and the first letter of the mother's name should be in the middle (Crimson - father Breter, mother - Hortensia):

  • Budennovskaya,
  • Hanoverian
  • Holstein,
  • Donskaya,
  • Terskaya.

For horses of the Oryol trotter, Don and Budenov breeds, only Russian names are allowed by the state stud book.

In the Akhal-Teke breed, the name of a foal can begin with any letter (Patron - father Paradox, mother Triad, Mangyt - father Gaygysyz, mother - Millet). Most often, Akhal-Teke horses are given Eastern and Turkmen names (Mikhman, Garayusup, Tykma-Serdar, Farukh, Yalkym, Taymaz).

The restriction also applies to the number of letters in the horse's name. For Orlovtsy, a maximum of 16 characters is allowed, and for an English Thoroughbred - no more than 27.

It is not allowed to give insulting and obscene nicknames, as well as repeat the nicknames of famous horses and use the nicknames of stallions and mares that founded lines and families (Aniline, Pion, Square, etc.). Akhal-Teke and Oryol foals are also forbidden to give an already existing nickname.

For a long time in the Oryol breed, nicknames were given to horses at the age of 3-4 years. The breeders carefully observed the development of the horse, its character, peculiarities in work, relations with other horses and people. The nickname was given individually and fully characterized this particular horse. So Polkan was distinguished by courage and strength, indefatigability in work, and Trifle was quite simple, but honest in work.

The rule for the formation of nicknames abroad

In European countries, there is a tradition to name a foal by the first letter of the father's name. This tradition is valid for many breeds, but is not mandatory, however, breeders prefer to adhere to this unspoken rule. The exception is the Trakehner and Dutch half-breeds. Among Trakenens, a foal is called by the first letter of the mother's name, regardless of the country of birth. In the Dutch breed, the foal is named after the year of birth. That is, foals born in 2008 receive nicknames for the letter D and so on. The tribal union of the Holstein breed adheres to the same rule. Nicknames for horses of girls and boys begin with the first letter of the year of birth. Only "X" and "Q" are not included in the alphabet, and "J" and "I" are combined into one group.

In the Hanoverian breed, the names of horses often go back to the names of sires, the founders of the lines. In the Oldenburg breed, there is a distinction for choosing the name of horses intended for sport and breeding. If a sports career is intended, the foal's name begins with the first letter of the mother's name. If fillies are bred for breeding, they get a nickname starting with the first letter of the father's name.

Horses of the Dutch riding breed are given nicknames consisting of a minimum of 21 characters. The nickname must be registered in the tribal union before the first of March following the year of birth of the foal. The owner writes down six proposed names for his horse on a special form and sends it to the Dutch riding breed association, where leading specialists choose one of the proposed nicknames and enter it into the official register.

Nicknames of horses are often supplemented by factory prefixes. So for Russian trotters in Russia, the prefix - Lok (Malvina - Lok), denoting the Lokot stud farm, is registered, the prefix - Shah is registered for Akhal-Teke horses born on the Shah-Teke (Gerkana-Shah) breeding farm, in Europe one of the most famous prefixes is Glocks - (Glocks Undercover), registered for horses owned by the largest breeder Gaston Glocks and his stable Glock Horse Performance Center.

In England and Ireland, there is no clear attachment of the nickname of a foal to the nicknames of the father or mother. Most often, a witty and associative nickname is chosen, which contains a whole story (I’ve Got A Bad Liver - literally “I have a bad liver”).

The Thoroughbred horse breed has the largest number of strange names and the largest number of restrictions, rules and prohibitions for the name of a newborn foal.

Racehorse named "Sit on the ass" (Sit on the ass)

It is forbidden to give an already existing nickname or a nickname consonant with it. More than a quarter of a million words have been included in the banned list, so breeders face a difficult task - how to name a horse and not fall under the ban. This is how horses with nicknames are born - Excuse My French (I apologize for my French), Under the table (Under the table), Egyptian Rose (Egyptian rose).

Often the name of the horse in the tribal and sports passport is different. This happens if the breeder gave the horse a dissonant name. So the eminent Rusty, multiple European and World Champion in dressage, as well as the winner of several Olympic games under the saddle of Willa Salzberg, was listed as Rotor in the tribal documents.

The history of Russian horse names

In Russia, the names of horses changed depending on the period, time, city and circumstances. In the pre-revolutionary years, there was only one prohibition - to call horses by human names.

In the course of a semantic analysis carried out by scientists on the example of the nicknames of the Orlov trotters of the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century, linguists identified several groups of names:

  • Nicknames for the name of birds or animals (ermine, cuckoo, cheetah),
  • Nicknames for the name of natural phenomena (Thunder, Comet, Rain, Fog),
  • Nicknames formed from titles and professions (Lord, Khan, Teacher),
  • Nicknames reflecting physical or moral qualities (Good-natured, Giant),
  • Nicknames that have a mythical, bookish or foreign language origin (Venus, Mamai, Pegasus).
  • Very often, names were supplemented with adjectives (Black Night, Old Dream).

Since the thirties of the century before last, in the nicknames of horses, a connection between parents and offspring began to be traced - the Danube from the Miner and Oak.

Nicknames of village horses

Horse names play a big role not only in the sports arena, but also in everyday life. For centuries, a horse has been both a transport and an assistant (working in the field, harvesting), so horses were often given sincere and simple nicknames, reflecting not only the good attitude of the owner, but also the features of the suit or character:

  • Ryabushka,
  • Henbane,
  • Burushka,
  • Sivushka,
  • Igren,
  • Burko,
  • Chubar,
  • Voronko.

People believed that the nickname subsequently affects the fate of the horse. So that the stallion grew up healthy and fast, he was given the nickname Wind or Bogatyr, and for the good-natured filly they chose the nickname Swallow or Zoryushka.

The funniest nicknames

The rules dictated by studbooks and tribal unions very often push breeders to invent not only unique, but also funny names and the palm in this belongs to trotting horse breeding. So officially registered horses with the following names:

  • Hedgehog Fast,
  • fortified river,
  • Kasatik Azartovich,
  • Let me try
  • Gypsy Gadala,
  • front entrance,
  • Empty head,
  • Golden Horde,
  • Apogee of Love
  • royal retinue,
  • Fly Lihaya,
  • Ukulele,
  • beautiful check in,
  • living memory,
  • Pouring rain.

Names in history

In World history, there are many not only human names, but also the nicknames of horses, and the famous Bucephalus is not the only example of this.

Bucephalus

Bucephalus was the faithful and beloved horse of the great Alexander the Great. Translated from Greek, Bucephalus means "bull-headed". According to historians, the stallion really had a wide and slightly convex forehead. He was skittish and rather wayward, even vicious, and only Alexander the Great managed to pacify and saddle this noble horse.

Incitat

Incitatus was a favorite of another great emperor - Caligula. According to legend, the emperor loved and respected his four-legged pet so much that he first made him an honorary citizen of Rome, and then a Roman senator. Especially for this magnificent and strong stallion, a spacious marble stable with drinking bowls of ivory and gold was built. He even had his own servants.

Hambletonian

A lesser known but no less significant stallion, the Gumbletonian, founded the modern American Trotter breed. During his life he fathered more than a thousand foals! Most of the foals were foals, and the names of the Gambletonian's sons Dictator, Happy Medium, George and Elixionir are still the most popular and frequent in the breed.

Rusk

Seabiscuit is a Thoroughbred stallion who became a symbol of hope for many Americans during the Great Depression. He was born as an unsightly and weak colt, no one expected him to win or any results in the races. However, the correct work of the new horse owner and trainer did the unthinkable - they turned Seabiscuit into an unbeatable racetrack fighter who won record amounts of money and also won the title of "horse of the year".

Absinthe

The legendary black Absinthe has long been a dressage horse with an unbeatable record. Under the saddle of Filatov, he won the personal gold of the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960. A bright and tall representative of the Akhal-Teke breed shone on the international sports arena for many years, although initially no one believed in the ability of this stallion. After his retirement, Absent continued his career as a stud stallion and left numerous offspring not only in the Akhal-Teke, but also in the Russian riding breed.

A horse is an animal that has been helping a person for many years in housekeeping. Some people treat with great trepidation not only the purchase of a foal, but also the choice of a name for it. It may seem that choosing nicknames for horses is quite simple. What is there to think, took, and called Zorka or, perhaps, Glasha. And indeed, for an animal kept in a village economy “for the soul”, this may not be of particular importance. However, nicknames for sports and breeding horses are chosen according to certain rules that must be taken into account.

There is an opinion that the fate of a horse depends on its name, so many seek to get close to their animal with the “right” nickname, which will predetermine its future life. Therefore, boys and girls try to approach the choice of nicknames for horses responsibly, choosing something suitable for the appearance, character of the animal or endowing it with the desired qualities.

Here are a few classifications, based on which you can choose names for horses, stallions and mares:

  • in appearance: Velvet, Shaggy, Beauty, Grace;
  • by character: Buyan, Fighter, Angel, Weasel, Thunderstorm, Ladnaya or Lada;
  • names of birds and other animals: Swallow, Swan, Dove, Eagle, Golden Eagle;
  • gems: Amethyst, Opal, Diamond, Ruby, Turquoise;
  • natural phenomena: Buran, Roll, Sunrise, Blizzard, Thunderstorm;
  • by color: Red, Bay, Crow, Snow White, White Bear, Fifteen;
  • nicknames of horses, consonant with the name of the area: Rio, Paris, Brooklyn, Volga, Yalta.

In addition, a domestic horse living in a village or village can be given a beautiful old Russian name. The horse can be called Zakhar, Lukyan, Miron or Prokhor, and the filly Zlata, Pelageya, Aksinya or Thekla.

When choosing a nickname for homemade mares and stallions, you are only limited by your imagination. However, when registering a breeding animal or a sports champion, you need to choose a name taking into account certain rules. Which ones we will explain in detail below.

Pedigree is an important criterion for choosing a name

For a thoroughbred horse with a pedigree, the name is usually chosen by the breeder. Therefore, you don’t have to think about how to name a foal: you can immediately find out how he was nicknamed by looking at his veterinary passport. The general rules for naming offspring are such that the name of a foal must necessarily include the capital letters of the nicknames of its parents. And most often the letters from the name of the father are at the beginning of the nickname of the stallion. For example, if the horse was called Velvet, and the mare was Yalta, then the newborn stallion may be called Buyan.

There are also some internal rules. For example, the name of the Oryol trotters should not have more than 16 letters, and it is forbidden to use more than 27 letters for thoroughbred horses.

Here are a few more rules that are used to name thoroughbred stud horses:

  • stallions of trotting breeds, as well as thoroughbred riding, Arabian and Trakehn breeds, the first letter in the name should be the capital letter of the mother, and in the middle the first letter of the father's nickname should be used;
  • in the offspring of the Don, Budenov, Terek, Holstein and Hanoverian breeds, on the contrary, the letter of the father's nickname is used first in the name, and only then the mother's;
  • nicknames for stallions and mares of the Traken breed first began with the paternal letter, and then the rules were changed, deciding that the capital letter should be transmitted from the mother;
  • the nicknames of the horses of the Alkhateke breed allow both options.

If you are considering how to name a breeding horse, then you should definitely consider that using the names of stud horses is prohibited by the rules. Names for horses, mares and stallions of an offensive nature and their transcriptions, as well as nicknames included in the international protection list, are also not accepted.

When it comes to naming sport horses, the name of the club or stable to which they belong is often added to their names. Such rules are accepted throughout Europe. Therefore, among horses of foreign origin, names consisting of four or five words are so common.

Tribal and domestic horse: what is the difference in names?

If it concerns this animal, which is not registered with the club and has no value as a breeding animal, then you can think of a name for the horse yourself. The nickname for such a pet can be whatever your heart desires, but, as mentioned above, it is better to choose something that suits its character or appearance.

Sports and thoroughbred horses most often have a certain nickname given to them according to certain rules inherent in the breed even before they are acquired. However, no one forbids coming up with a diminutive form for your horse, which you can call it at home, in your stable.

Video "How to choose the right horse"

Before you buy a foal and choose a name for him, you also need to know how to choose the right one. Participants of the video from the FORUMHOUSE channel will tell about this, as well as what kind of care this animal will need.

Choosing a nickname for a foal or an adult horse is not an easy task, but very pleasant for the owner. It must be remembered that the horse is a very intelligent, understanding animal, and it will be sensitive to the emotional and semantic coloring inherent in its name and in the way people pronounce it.

breed carrier

If we are talking about a thoroughbred animal, it must be taken into account that in breeding horse breeding there are certain principles for choosing a name for a horse - it must be connected with the nickname of the mother and father. The foal's name should begin with the first letter of the mare's name, and in the middle contain the initial letter of the stallion's name (for example, Clover from Beauty and Heather, Grace from Gypsophila and Caesar, Prankster from Pobeda and Karaguz). This rule applies to the nicknames of horses of the Vladimir, Arabian, Trakehner, trotter and thoroughbred riding breeds.

Regarding the horses of the Tersk, Don, Hanoverian, Holstein and Budyonnovsky breeds, the opposite rule applies: the first letter of the father's name gives rise to the nickname of the foal, and in the middle there should be the first letter of the mother's name (Danube from the Miner and Naiad).

For the offspring of the Akhal-Teke breed, a name can be used from the first letter of the nickname of the father or mother, at the discretion of the owner.

When choosing a nickname, do not use:

  1. Names of famous thoroughbred horses and champions (Aniline, Pion, Absinthe), but you can name horses known in history and literature (for example, Goliath, Bolivar).
  2. Names and surnames of people (names of historical characters are allowed, for example, Dobrynya).
  3. Nicknames that use more than 18 letters.
  4. Numbers or initials; unethical and obscene words.

When applying for a passport for a pedigree horse at the Horse Breeding Research Institute, a specialist in the relevant breed will check whether the name chosen by the owner for the foal meets the requirements for breeding records. In case of violation of the rules, the name chosen by the owner of the horse may be changed. This applies not only to foals, but also to adult animals.

pet

For a non-breeding horse, nicknames can be chosen arbitrarily, based on your own preferences. It can be just a word that is pleasant for the owner, or a characteristic of the color, temperament, or even the place of residence of the animal.

There is a science that studies animal names - zoonymy, which classifies horse names into the following categories:

  • a) names of animals, insects (ermine, tiger, bumblebee, panther, leopard, sable, dragonfly).
  • b) the names of birds (Eagle, Falcon, Raven, Snipe, Vulture, Goose, Swallow, Swift, Hawk).
  • c) names of objects or materials (Granite, Ash, Star, Fire, Diamond, Sapphire).
  • d) names of natural phenomena (Breeze, Blizzard, Thunderstorm, Thunder, Coolness, Night, Dawn, Hurricane).
  • e) positions, titles, professions (Bogatyr, Vityaz, Witch Doctor, Cavalier, Sorcerer, Merchant, Worker).
  • f) characteristic or physical characteristics: (Buyan, Giant, Vetrogon, Strongman, Fast).
  • g) the names of ancient or literary heroes (Achilles, Neptune, Ali Baba; Ajax).
  • h) geographical names, ethnonyms (Arab, Bedouin, Cossack, Sebezh, Sydney).
  • i) qualitative adjectives, as a description of appearance or character (Fast, Handsome, Proud, Funny, Bully, Invincible, Stubborn).
  • j) relative adjectives that have passed to determine the color of horses (Bay, Brown, Red, Gray).

In backyard farms, foals are often given names that point to the names of their father or mother. In this case, either single-root words are used (Eagle, Eaglet, Eaglet, Eaglet), or semantic groups (Velvet, Atlas, Coarse calico, Satin - the names of the fabric; Mars, Venus, Saturn - the planets).

Literary hero

In Russian literature, there are many works dedicated to horses, their beauty, endurance, intelligence and sensitivity. The authors came up with a variety of names for them, sometimes comical, sometimes unusual.

In L. N. Tolstoy's story "Kholstomer" the horses Merchant, Vyazopurikha, Swan, Dobrohita, General, Mohammed, Darling are mentioned. In the novel "Anna Karenina" the horses of the main characters were called Gladiator, Arabchik, Karabakh, and readers liked the nickname Frou-Frou so much that it is used to this day, for example, in the names of sweets and shops. In real life, Tolstoy's favorite horse was called Delir.

In the tragic and poignant story of Chingiz Aitmatov, the main character, the pacer's horse, was called "Gulsary". In the works of A.P. Chekhov, there are such names of horses as Count Nulin and the Giant. In The Enchanted Wanderer N.S. Leskov named the horse Dido. In Mikhail Alekseev's story "Karyukha", horses are called Mike, Bulanka, Swallow, Ogonyok.

Danilevsky describes in detail the fate of not only the main historical characters, but also their horses Eclipse, Zorka and Bars. Turgenev I.S. in the "Notes of a Hunter" mentions horses named Ermine, Falcon, Catch up, Peacock, Commendable, Beauty.
