Original wooden puzzles from the archives of Scrollsaw Woodworking & Crafts are a stylish and easy-to-make project that will be appreciated by both professional craftsmen and those who are just starting to master. Mosaic puzzles have smooth and uncomplicated cutting lines, without sharp turns, which makes them easy to make not only on a power machine, but also with a manual jigsaw.

For sawing this project, both softwood and hardwood blanks are suitable. Instead of a glued board, it is desirable to use a solid array or trimmings with a single texture pattern. This will preserve the external attractiveness and design conciseness of the project. The optimal thickness of the workpiece is 13-15 mm. The sizes of puzzles can vary depending on individual wishes.

For cutting the workpiece, sawing out the main shapes and creating cuts, it is appropriate to use a #5 or #7 jigsaw. In a good puzzle, all the pieces must fit together perfectly. It is not worth relying on the final grinding of the ends, the quality of the saw cut should initially be as high as possible. To do this, choose files with an increased number of teeth per inch (high TPI value in the marking). When working on the machine, it is also important to correctly select the optimal speed, since an excessively high stroke rate can lead to the formation of burns on the cut.

When cutting a puzzle with a jigsaw, the printed diagram can be glued onto a wooden blank in any convenient way, but the experience of the craftsmen shows that the most practical solution in this case is to use double-sided tape.

In sawn elements with a 1.5-2 mm drill, eyes are made for animal figures. After that, the adhesive tape is peeled off, and the front side of each part is carefully sanded. Sawing out the educational puzzles with a jigsaw is completed by applying a decorative finish chosen at the discretion of the master.

What materials will you need

To make a puzzle, use the Photoshop program, take cardboard, you must have a printer, paper for printing and scissors.

Making a puzzle

Open Photoshop and upload your favorite photo. In the program, we make a copy of the Background, that is, the working layer. Give the file a name. Between the resulting layers, make another layer and also give a name.

Fill the new layer with black, go to the topmost working layer and start drawing the puzzle. Open the Texturizer panel and select the line called Texture. You should have a dialog box open where you will need to load the texture of the working layer by clicking on the "Load Texture" button. Now you need to configure the options. We determine the relief of the puzzle particles and select the desired size.

After setting up the textures, we click on the “OK” button known to everyone and we see that a texture has formed on the photo.

Now we proceed to print the resulting image with a visible texture, paste the printed sheet onto the cardboard. Take the cardboard as tightly as possible so that the parts do not break or bend. Use good quality glue. The image should adhere tightly to the cardboard and not peel off. After you have glued the sheet and firmly fastened it to the cardboard, place an even heavy weight on it, for example, a brick.

When the image is completely dry, check the adhesiveness. If everything is in order, you can start cutting out the details. Scissors take the sharpest and most convenient. The main rule in cutting is accuracy and clarity. You need to cut the details strictly along the lines, otherwise the puzzle will not hold together well. An entertaining game is ready.

Puzzles for kids

If your kid likes to add pictures, then you can please him and make interesting puzzles with your own hands and you won't have to spend a lot of money.

All you need is colored foam rubber sheets and cellulose tissue paper.

We cut out any figures from rubber sheets that can attract the baby and glue them on a napkin. We take scissors and cut the napkin into several parts. Children's puzzles are ready. A variety of figures will attract the attention of the baby, moreover, such game puzzles will help him develop fine motor skills of his hands.

For the smallest players, it is better to cut the puzzles into two parts, while the parts should be rather big. When the kid has mastered the technique of folding two parts, you can complicate his task and make a puzzle with a lot of details.

Such a game is wonderful because in the evenings you can gather with the whole family and have fun. As you can see, it is not at all necessary to spend money on the purchase of puzzles; the game can be made by yourself very quickly and without difficulty.

To make a puzzle based on a drawn picture, you will need:
- scissors;
- paper;
- glue;
- ruler;
- pencils;
- thick cardboard

Draw any picture on a piece of paper. Also, do not forget to make a photocopy - when making a mosaic, you can use it as a hint.

Stick the picture on thick cardboard, then leave it to dry completely. Then turn the image face down.
Using a ruler, draw a grid, which should consist of shapes of various sizes. Use a utility knife or scissors to cut out the puzzle along the lines.

Your puzzle game is ready. Mix and match mosaic pieces and enjoy assembling them.

How to make a photo puzzle

There are more complex ways to make a homemade puzzle, which can serve, for example, as an original gift for a friend. For this you will need:
- color printer, which can be a high-quality photo of A4 format;
- thick cardboard that will fit the size of your printed photo;
- PVA glue;
- scissors;
- pencil.

If you want to make a fairly large puzzle, you should contact special studios that print large-format photos for printing photos.

So, glue the printed photo to the cardboard and wait until your product dries completely. Then cut off the excess cardboard so that the edges of the photo exactly match the edges of the cardboard and have the same shape.

After that, on the reverse side of the cardboard, using a regular pencil, mark out the markings on which you will need to cut out the puzzle pieces. If you are making a puzzle for adults, try to make the details of the mosaic more complex, and not simple geometric shapes. Use not only straight lines, but also semicircles and geometric shapes at various angles. Thus, you will complicate the process of assembling a homemade puzzle as much as possible.

Printing houses have special machines that will allow you to cut your photo in different ways. This option may be useful to you in case you are in a hurry with a gift or you are too lazy to wield scissors, but you still want to give an original gift. When the puzzle pieces are cut, try to assemble them yourself into the original picture. At the same time, make sure that they fit well enough to each other.

How to make a puzzle for a baby

To make a soft puzzle for a small child, you will need:
- several sheets of multi-colored porous rubber;
- scissors;
- household cellulose napkins.

Cut out any figures that are familiar to the child from sheets of rubber and stick them on a cellulose napkin. After that, using scissors, cut the resulting figures into 2-3 parts.

For kids who have not yet fully acquired the skills of folding puzzles, it is best to cut the picture into 2 equal parts. After some time, when the baby begins to fold the picture without difficulty, you can cut each piece of the puzzle game into 2 more parts.

Alternatively, to make a puzzle, you can use a bright page from an old illustrated magazine, stick it on cardboard, and cut it into squares, triangles, or other geometric shapes. Even if there is no cardboard at hand - it does not matter! Use the easiest way to make a puzzle for a child - take an old and elastic postcard with color illustrations and cut it into pieces.

It is recommended that parents put the puzzles in a bag or an envelope so that they do not have to look for them all over the room. In this way, you can create a variety of puzzles for your child, allowing him to develop fine motor skills and thinking.

How to quickly make a simple wooden puzzle? For example, like this:
Let's start with a sketch. I usually draw on paper and then stick the drawing onto a piece of wood or plywood using tape or glue. Suitable universal contact adhesive (Moment, rubber No. 88, BF-6 and others) or an adhesive stick. But not at this time.

I sketched the sketch right on the edge of a birch plank 18mm thick

First - the general outlines, then outlined the mouth, eyes and tail. Next, we divide into pieces. I pay special attention to the fact that there are no too narrow jumpers across the wood fibers to ensure the strength of the parts.

The sketch is ready. It is better to drill the eyes in advance, since the finished parts can be easily split when drilling. Now I'm going to start cutting. As always - Flying Duchman blades FR-UR#5

If you do not plan to make a standing toy, then you can use thin plywood and a manual jigsaw.
An important stage of work is grinding. Every detail is carefully sanded with sandpaper. And here is the result:

It looks like it turned out not at all homemade,

But rather, it is a wild boar, judging by the powerful fangs - a real boar-hook.

Here is my drawing for sawing out a puzzle from plywood or wood. You can freely download and use the puzzle pattern for your work. It will be interesting for me to look at the photos of the boar you got.
