Installation of door closers. How to install a door closer

A person constantly cares about making his home more comfortable, warm, clean and safe. And one way to achieve this is to install a door closer. In the last decade, closers in Russia have become increasingly popular - they can already be seen literally in any institution or residential building. To install this useful mechanism, you can call a special wizard, or you can install it yourself, having previously armed yourself with some knowledge about the basic requirements and conditions for installation. Our article will help you with this.

What are they needed for?

Installing a door closer has several goals, so this mechanism can be called universal. The door on which the door closer is installed closes smoothly and quietly. In the presence of a door closer, sharp jerks and slamming of the door are excluded, which helps to keep both the door itself and the door slopes intact. Door fittings with closers (hinges, sealing elements, etc.) wear out much more slowly. These devices have firmly entered our lives and have become an integral part of a modern entrance or administrative and office buildings. The closer is mounted on external entrance doors, on thin interior doors, as well as on heavy doors that have a special purpose. By providing a tight and neat closing of the door structure, the door closer helps to retain warm air in the winter months and coolness from the air conditioner in the heat of summer. In addition, it reduces the penetration of street noise and annoying sounds into the room.

The "ancestors" of modern closers existed in antiquity: people closed the doors with a stone hanging on a rope. In the 19th century, a design was invented that allowed doors to be opened both in one direction and in the opposite direction, and closed by means of a spring tension. Also, the springs were on almost every door of the times of the USSR.

Closer types

Upper

At the word “door closer”, it is this variety of them that is usually drawn in the mind. It consists of a working body, which is located at the top of the door, as well as several levers, whose task is to transmit force to the spring.

Upper type door closer

Top closers have a different arrangement of the mechanism that transmits force to the spring. Allocate:

  • with gear drive. The mechanism consists of a gear that causes a toothed piston or pin to move, having teeth and a spring; at the same time, this gear is connected to the lever. This design is simple and reliable in operation, which provides it with the greatest popularity at the moment;
  • having a sliding bar. They consist of an axis that looks like a heart-shaped camshaft that sets the spring in motion, as well as braking and opening pistons. This design is quite compact and more reliable than gear-driven devices, but is currently not widely used.

floor standing

Comfortable, practical, almost invisible. Ideal for situations where door design is particularly important. Most often used in shopping and entertainment centers and other areas with very dense traffic. It was from the floor closers that the idea was taken to create the upper devices with a sliding rod.

However, the floor one, unlike the top one, does not have a lever that would drive the axle; instead, the door is mounted directly on the axle itself. Closers with a similar design can be used if the total weight of the doors does not exceed 300 kg.

Hidden

They are used in cases where the presence of a door closer needs to be made as inconspicuous as possible, but it is not possible to use floor-mounted ones for one reason or another. Hidden devices can be divided into two types:

  • with sliding bar. In fact, these are almost the same mechanisms as the usual top closers, but with more compact dimensions. The entire structure is almost completely located in the door leaf or inside the door frame;

Concealed sliding door closer

  • the loop. This is the smallest and most inconspicuous door closer of all. The whole mechanism is completely hidden in the body of the loop itself. Such closers are very practical and quite promising, since for their installation it is not necessary to additionally drill either doors or door frames with slopes. It is required to make only those holes for the screws into which the hinges themselves will be installed, so that minimal damage is caused to the door leaf. However, they also have certain disadvantages. Closer hinges are not intended for installation on very massive doors; due to their miniature size, they cannot boast of a large working resource. In addition, if it is decided to install hinges, then you should be very careful about installing the door leaf, accurately verifying all the smallest nuances.

Important points to consider when choosing

  • The width and weight of the door leaf. The heavier and more massive the door, the more power the door closer should have. In some cases, the installation of two mechanisms is required. To correctly determine the class of the device, consult the seller or use the table indicating the class of the mechanism, as well as the width and weight of the door.

Door closer class definition table

  • adjustment mechanism. Particular attention should be paid to the force and speed of closing the door. The closer kit must include a brake device.
  • What type of traction mechanism is it. They are of the standard type with a sliding rod or equipped with a latch that holds the door in the open position.
  • The place on the door where the device is attached (top, hidden, hinge or floor-type closer).

Be sure to take into account the difference in temperatures that any closer will inevitably be subjected to, unless it is installed on internal doors in a room. There are specialized door closers that have electro-hydraulic and electromagnetic elements as an addition. Such mechanisms should have certificates corresponding to their quality.

If we are talking about a closer purchased for external doors in contact with the street, you should also pay attention to whether the device has protective measures against unauthorized entry into the building and vandalism. Such closers must have a safety valve, and the body of the product must be made of anti-shock material.

Taking care of the harmonious appearance of the building, it makes sense to choose a door closer in accordance with the desired design and color. Modern devices have a wide range of colors.

Nuances and features of installing closers on different types of doors

Installing a door closer on different types of doors generally follows the same pattern: many requirements are the same for all types of door leafs. For example, before installing a door closer, you need to make sure that all previous work related to finishing or repairing the door block has been completed. The door must be clean, free of damage, contamination that could interfere with the correct installation of this device; also, the door itself must be installed evenly, without distortions, the canvas must fit exactly into the box. After that, you can install the closer.

To install the door closer with your own hands correctly, you need to read the instructions in detail and all the installation schemes for this mechanism available there. Many door closer models have a real size mounting template attached. This template should be guided by when installing the device on the door.

Installation of a closer on an iron, wooden, plastic door is carried out as follows:

  • The template found in the instructions is applied to the inside of the door at the top and secured with tape;
  • Further, in accordance with the location of the marks on the template, the locations of future holes for fastenings on the door are marked, then they are drilled exactly according to the markup. It is also possible to drill holes directly through the template without resorting to pre-marking;
  • After that, the closer body is attached to the door leaf. In this case, the valves that regulate the speed must be turned towards the hinges;
  • The lever mechanism is disassembled into two parts. One part (side "foot") is attached to the closer body already installed on the door;
  • The other part of the lever (main) is attached with a screw and washer to the rest of the mechanism;
  • The side "foot" is placed perpendicular to the door, after which it is connected to the main lever;
  • Further, elasticity, opening angle and opening-closing speed (if the device is equipped with this option) are adjusted using a special hex key;
  • The door is ready for use.

If you decide to install a door closer on a metal door, you need to choose more powerful models so that it is not difficult for them to withstand its weight. Often such a mechanism is equipped with a locking system that allows you to fix the door in the open. As a rule, such devices are most in demand for installation on the entrances of residential buildings or external doors of various enterprises and institutions. The door closer can have several different locking positions, and the locking system can also be manually adjusted.

When choosing a closer with a powerful spring, remember that the more powerful the spring, the more effort will be required when opening the door, but at the same time it will be easier to close.

Installing closers on wooden and plastic doors in general differs little from the manipulations carried out with an iron door. However, of course, wood and plastic are easier to drill than metal, so in this regard, installation will be faster and require less effort. In addition, doors made of wood and plastic are lighter, so they do not need a device with a very powerful spring. You can get by with a medium power closer.

When choosing a closer model, one must keep in mind that devices in a plastic case will look organic and natural on a plastic door, while devices in a metal case are ideal for a metal door. For wood, you can use both of them, so here you should focus on the color scheme, the dimensions of the device in relation to the door leaf, the general view of the room, etc.

If the door is completely glass, then the best (and often the only) option for a closer would be a floor-mounted one. This type of device eliminates the need to drill holes in the glass door leaf, which eliminates possible damage. The floor closer will harmoniously fit into the interior of the room and will match the design of the door. Agree, it looks rather ridiculous when something metallic and bulky is placed on a transparent, seemingly light and airy door.

Installing a door closer on a glass door

An ideal option for installation on interior doors or doors inside offices in organizations is hidden door closers in the form of a hinge. Also, interior and interior doors are usually light, since it makes no sense to put something more massive in their place, and the hinge closer does its job perfectly.

If you intend to install a door closer on the street side of the building, you should choose from thermal and frost-resistant models.

When installing any kind of door closer on any door, you must strictly follow all the manufacturer's recommendations specified in the instructions. Self-activity is inappropriate here.

After the closer is installed, the door requires special handling. So, for example, it is forbidden to apply additional efforts, trying to close such a door faster than the closer does. It cannot be supported by anything, create obstacles for its natural opening and closing, keep it in the open position. The door with a closer opens smoothly, sudden movements can damage the mechanism. You also need to explain to the children that this door is not designed to hang or roll on it.

Setting and adjustment

In order to avoid possible breakdowns, the closer needs to be adjusted from time to time. Most often, adjustment work consists in the fact that the master changes the speed of the door leaf. If the door opens very slowly, it is necessary to adjust the mechanism by compressing the spring, using a special fixing nut for this. It is possible to control the speed of closing the door by turning the head of the first valve clockwise or in the opposite direction, while the number of revolutions in one direction and the other should not exceed two. However, the design of the closer also has another valve, the purpose of which is to promote a tight closing of the door leaf with the door frame in a situation where the door does not fit enough. This function is called "dock". There are also closers with a third valve, which are able to regulate the course of the door structure at an angle of 80 or 90 °. Devices equipped with three valves have a higher price.

Sometimes there are situations when it is necessary to keep the door open. In this case, you need to resort to a tighter tightening of the latch responsible for this function. This manipulation should be performed by opening the door at an angle of about 90 -100 °. If you need to open the door for a long time (for example, you need to bring in or take out a lot of things when moving, including bulky furniture), you should resort to the Hold-open option. Hold-open is a special lever that can fix the door in the open state for the right time. To do this, open the door leaf 90-95 degrees and screw the locking mechanism. The door will now close as usual. And if the door is opened at an angle exceeding 90 degrees, it will automatically remain in this position. To cancel the hold-open mode, you just need to pull the door towards you, and it will close.

However, I must say that not all models are equipped with this necessary function, so keep this in mind when buying.

The duration of the "life" of the closer is affected by such a factor as the viscosity of the oil. The degree of oil viscosity in devices located on external doors, in turn, depends on the ambient temperature. Therefore, it is necessary to regulate such closers twice a year - separately for winter and summer. In addition, a mandatory part of the maintenance of the device is the timely lubrication of all rubbing and rotating elements. A closer whose parts are not treated with oil in time will not last long. If the mechanism fails, it cannot be repaired. Only replacement can help. Signs of a breakdown such as oil smudges and the disappearance of the ability to hold the door indicate a breakdown, and the adjustment does not affect the improvement of working functions.

So, to install a closer on the door, without resorting to the help of a specialist, everyone can quite independently. But for this, you should carefully study the instructions and not rely on the usual "I'll do it my way, maybe it will be better." Remember that with improper installation or operation, even a very high-quality door closer will not last long and will not be able to effectively protect the door from damage. If this device is installed correctly and with attention to all details, you will be provided with long-term and reliable protection against door slams, drafts, and unpleasant squeaks.

1. PERPENDICULAR ARM (STANDARD INSTALLATION)

The classic scheme for mounting the door closer. The body of the device is fixed on the door leaf, and the sole of the lever is fixed on the upper beam of the door frame. Please note: the closer is attached "from the corridor", that is, from the outside of the door. In this case, the door should open towards itself, and when it is closed, the lever is located at an angle of ~ 90 ° to the canvas.

Pros:
+ 100% preservation of rated power. With this fixation, the door closer will work at 100% of its capabilities. This is important if the mass of the door is close to the maximum load of the door closer. The opening angle will be the maximum possible for your model.

Minuses:
- Protruding lever. This spoils the interior and is especially striking in narrow corridors. In addition, the design is open to vandalism: a bully may want to test the strength of the lever by wrapping his arms around it and hanging. Therefore, in schools, hospitals and other public places, it is better to install the door closer using the parallel lever method.

Not for all canvases. The standard installation is not suitable if you have glass or thin doors (aluminum, lightweight "Finnish", etc.). Also, sometimes the upper strapping of the canvas (if any) can interfere.

2. INSTALLATION ON THE DOOR JOB (UPPER INSTALLATION)

Mirror to the previous mounting method. With it, a closer with a lever chaga is fixed from the inside of the room (the hinges are not visible, the door opens from itself). The body is fixed on the horizontal surface of the door jamb (lintel), the sole of the lever is at the top of the canvas.

Pros:
+ Power close to nominal. Loss of efficiency in comparison with the standard installation method - no more than 5-10%. The opening angle of the canvas is almost the same as when fixing the first way.

Suitable for entry doors. The standard method involves mounting the closer from the street, which is not recommended even in warm regions of Russia, and even if the closer is frost-resistant. When installed on the jamb, the door closer remains inside and always stays dry and warm.

Suitable for thin and/or light doors. Since the main load is not carried by the canvas, but by the upper beam of the door frame. The exception is glass sheets, it is better to install a floor closer with them.

Minuses:
- Protruding lever. It still spoils the interior, only not the corridor, but the room itself. It is still easy to break if you hang with your whole body.

Passage requirements. The lintel and/or ceiling must be of sufficient height to secure the door closer body to the jamb.

3. INSTALLATION USING THE PARALLEL ARM BRACKET

This method involves fastening the door closer from inside the room (the door opens away from itself, the hinges are not visible). The body is attached to the canvas, and the sole of the lever - through the bracket (mounting bracket) under the upper beam of the box. When the door is closed, the lever of two bars folds and “lays down” almost parallel to the canvas.

Pros:
+ Neat look. When folded, the lever is not conspicuous and is of little interest to a bully.

More mounting options. The “parallel lever” option is resorted to if it is impossible to fix the closer otherwise: the side wall (with standard fixation) or the ceiling (with fixation on the jamb) interferes.

Suitable for apartments with two entrance doors. Some apartments have two entrance doors: the main metal one and the second wooden one (for thermal insulation). The "parallel lever" method allows you to install the door closer on the main door. The main thing is that the turning radius of the lever should be less than the depth of the opening between the doors.

Minuses:

In this article we will tell you how to install a door closer. This small device helps to smoothly and silently close both metal and plastic, and even glass doors. Need to install a closer on a wooden canvas? This is also not a problem, because the process itself will take some 20-30 minutes, and all the work can be done independently.

It is noteworthy, but closers have been around for a long time. True, not in the form in which we are accustomed to seeing them. The progenitors of modern mechanisms were ordinary springs, which were fixed at one end on the canvas, and at the other - on the box, and ensured automatic closing of the door. It was impossible to adjust such a design, so most often such a door either opened with difficulty or clapped loudly when closed.

Overhead closers - the most common and suitable for any door

Modern mechanisms allow not only to smoothly and silently close the door, but also have a whole range of useful characteristics. They can block an open door in a certain position, promote a snug fit of the canvas to the box, and allow you to ventilate the room. The installation of a door closer has become mandatory when installing entrance doors equipped with intercoms, they are installed everywhere in public buildings, and very often they are also used in private homes.

To date, closers have different design features, so they can be differentiated according to various criteria. According to the method of attachment, they are divided into:

  • overhead. The most common and suitable for any door. Mounted on top and can be mounted on the door leaf or wall.
  • hidden. Sophisticated mechanisms that are immediately built into the door leaf. They are installed by experts.
  • floor. They can be found on glass doors. They are attached at the bottom of the structure, and their second part is built into the floor covering.

Floor closers can be found on glass doors

According to the method of transmitting torque, the structures are divided into slide (the closer is parallel to the canvas and slides, which makes the doors easy to use even for children) and lever (the models are very reliable and are installed on heavy doors).

Most often, closers are mounted on entrance and external doors. As a rule, installation is carried out indoors, but there are also frost-resistant models. They are placed from the side of the street, and they are also great for installation on gates and gates, as they are immune to changes in weather conditions. Their disadvantage is the high price, but this has to be sacrificed for the sake of convenience and if it is impossible to install a door closer indoors.

Most often, door closers are mounted on entrance and external doors.

When choosing a closer, pay attention to such a parameter as the weight of the door and its width. For this, there is a special gradation of mechanisms, where each cash register (and there are 7 of them) is assigned its own index (EN). The higher the class, the greater the loads the structures are able to handle, but, accordingly, their price will be higher. The cost of mechanisms also depends on the functionality. More simple models, the cost of which is low, cannot be adjusted to certain parameters (for example, smoothness of opening). When buying a door closer, do not chase the price - a good and high-quality option cannot be very cheap, however, it will last much longer.

Installing a door closer - a detailed guide

Installing a closer on a plastic, wooden or metal door is not difficult. Of the tools, you only need a drill with the appropriate drill for each type of door, a marker or pencil, a ruler, a screwdriver or a screwdriver. Manufacturers have taken care of those for whom installing a door closer with their own hands is a new thing. They complete the product with a template that conveys the dimensions of the mechanism in full size and all the technological holes. The drawing is applied on both sides of the sheet: one - for opening towards oneself, the other - from oneself.

So, for starters, we combine the red lines drawn on the template. Horizontal corresponds to the upper border of the canvas, and vertical corresponds to the edge with loops. If the door closer is not installed on the side of the hinges, then it is necessary to measure the distance from the edge of the canvas to the middle of the hinges with a ruler, mark this point on the back of the doors and draw a strictly vertical line. With it, and align the line on the template. Next, mark the holes for drilling. We take a drill and drill holes in the door leaf and frame.

If the door opens towards itself, then we put the mechanism on the canvas, and the lever on the box, if from ourselves - the opposite is true.

We separate the body and levers into separate elements by unscrewing the screw. We apply the body to the drilled holes and fasten it to the canvas. We do the same with the closer. Important! In the kit, as a rule, two fasteners are offered: for a closer to a metal door and for a plastic (wooden) structure. We fix the traction to the body with a screw. We connect the lever and the rod, fasten them with another screw, or by snapping the mechanism (you need to apply force).

Adjustment and maintenance - for the correct operation of the system

So, how do we install the closer on the door correctly, we figured it out. Now that everything is installed, we make adjustments to the closing of the doors. To do this, open the canvas and look at the closing speed. If it does not suit you, then with the help of screws we make adjustments until the desired result is achieved. These adjustment screws may be positioned differently on each model, so please refer to the manual for this information. To increase speed, the screws are rotated clockwise, and to slow down and create a smooth ride - counterclockwise. Since the door opens to 180°, the design provides for adjustment of the closing speed in the range from 180 to 15° and from 15° to slam.

The first screw is responsible for the closing range, and the second screw is responsible for the finishing speed. Do not overdo it in unscrewing / tightening the screws. Sometimes a small shift is enough to change the stroke speed. Otherwise, you can not only knock down all the settings, but also disable the door closer. If the model is equipped with additional functions, then separate regulatory bolts are provided for them. For decorative design of closers, special linings are offered, which give the mechanisms an aesthetic appearance and protect the body and adjustment screws from dust and dirt. Since all mechanisms loosen over time under the influence of temperature changes, humidity levels and other factors, we recommend that you check and adjust the smoothness of the movement at least twice a year.

All rubbing parts of the structure should be lubricated as needed. In addition, you can not leave the door open for a long time in order to preserve the closer. An exception can only be a design with a special stroke blocking function. If there is already a need to leave the door open for a long time, then the mechanism of traction and lever should be disconnected. If oil leaks are found, the closer must be replaced, as this indicates a malfunction. As you can see, installing a door closer on any door with your own hands is not a big deal, the main thing is to approach this matter responsibly. Do not forget to carry out regular inspection and maintenance of the mechanism for its smooth operation.

So that the doors do not remain open, they used to use a banal spring, today they put a door closer. Its design is also based on a spring, but it is more powerful, hidden in a metal case and filled with oil - for “braking” when closing. Installing a door closer is a simple task. Self-installation will take 20-30 minutes. Hardly more. So we take a drill and set it with our own hands.

Classification

According to the worldwide EN 1154 standards, door closers are classified according to the closing force they can generate. They are divided into 7 classes, which are designated EN1-EN7. When choosing a class, pay attention to the inertia of the door, that is, to the width of its leaf and weight at the same time. If different door parameters correspond to different classes, a device of a higher class is installed.

Door closer classDoor leaf width, mmDoor leaf weight, kg
EN1up to 750 mmup to 20 kg
EN2
up to 850 mmup to 40 kg
EN3up to 950 mmup to 60 kg
EN4up to 1100 mmup to 80 kg
EN5up to 1250 mmup to 100 kg
EN6up to 1400 mmup to 120 kg
EN7up to 1600 mmup to 160 kg

For example, the width of the door corresponds to the class EN2, and the weight - EN4. They put the 4th class, since a weaker effort will not cope with the load.

There are door closers belonging to the same class. The characteristics then indicate the class with one digit - EN5. They have a small range of force adjustment - within the same class. There are devices whose closing force is regulated within several groups. In this case, the range is marked with a hyphen - EN2-3, for example. The latter are more convenient to use - you can adjust the closing speed depending on the weather. But the cost of such models is higher.

Structures and traction device

The main structural element of the door closer is a spring that pushes the lever. According to the method of transferring force from the spring to the lever, there are two types of devices:

Both of these types consist of two parts: a housing in which the spring is hidden and the force-transmitting mechanism and lever. They are mounted at the top of the door: one part on the canvas, the second - on the box. What-where, depends on the direction of opening. If the doors open “towards themselves”, a case with a mechanism is installed on the door leaf, when opening “from oneself”, a lever is attached. The photo shows a lever type closer, but similar installation rules for models with a sliding channel.

As you understand, they are not suitable for all types of doors - it is problematic to put them on glass ones. For them, there is another design - floor. The case with the mechanism is mounted on the floor, only the holder plate protrudes from above. A similar holder is installed at the top, but the mechanism is far from always there, only for heavy door panels.

By the way, there are floor models for wooden and metal doors. They also have linkage or sliding channel. They are less conspicuous, but in this arrangement they are more likely to be damaged.

Where to put

Basically, closers are placed on external or entrance doors; they can be installed on gates or gates. In the case of doors, they are positioned so that the body is in the room. Although there are frost-resistant models designed for cold exploitation, it is better that the case is protected from the effects of weather conditions. Also, this arrangement guarantees greater safety.

Installing a door closer: instructions with a photo

To mount the closer on the door, you only need a drill, a ruler, a pencil and a screwdriver. A drill is usually required "3" (three), but you need to look at the diameter of the fastener, which usually comes with the kit.

Most of the manufacturers, to facilitate self-installation of the closer on the door, complete the products with installation templates. These templates show the closer parts schematically in full size. They also have mounting holes for each element. In models that can create an effort to open a different class, the holes are drawn in different colors, they are additionally signed - the closer class is placed next to it.

The template is printed on both sides of the sheet. On one side - to open the doors "toward yourself" - from the side of the hinges (pictured above), on the other - "away from you".

The template has two perpendicular red stripes. We combine the horizontal one with the upper edge of the door leaf, the vertical one with the hinge axis line.

Everything is clear with the upper edge of the door leaf, but in order not to make a mistake during installation, the hinge axis line must be drawn. If a closer is installed from the side of the hinges, there is no problem - using a long ruler and a pencil, transfer the line of the middle of the loops up. If the installation will be carried out on the other side, measure the distance from the edge of the canvas to the middle of the loop. Mark this distance on the other side and draw a line.

Holes for pusher

On the template we find marks for holes according to the selected class. With the help of a drill or an awl, we transfer them to the door leaf and to the frame.

Usually, two types of fasteners are included: for metal (metal-plastic) and wood. We select a drill of a suitable size and drill holes in the indicated places with a drill.

Door closers are equipped with two types of fasteners - for metal and wooden doors

Next, the actual installation of the closer on the door begins. Please note that for installation it is necessary that the body and levers are separated. If they are assembled, they are separated (the washer is unscrewed, the screw connecting the levers and the body is removed).

Mounting

We attach the parts to the holes made, install the fasteners. On the diagram we find the class of opening force that we need (in this case EN2) and install the parts as shown in the figure.

To open “toward ourselves”, we put the case on the door leaf, we install a rod on the box.

Now you need to connect the thrust lever to the body. There is a special ledge at the bottom of the case. We put a lever on it, tighten it with a screw.

Now it remains to connect the lever with the thrust. There are two options.

Connect the lever to the rod

The very connection of the lever with the rod is very simple: two parts are combined, pressed down a little with your fingers. With a slight click, they are fixed. The trick is how to position them relative to the door. The rate of movement of the door leaf at the final stage of closing depends on this. The position can be changed due to the fact that the rod consists of two parts and can be adjusted in length - one of the parts of the rod is a long threaded pin. Rotate the pin and shorten or lengthen it.

If you just need smooth fine-tuning, the thrust is set so that it is perpendicular to the door leaf. To do this, slightly reduce its size (in the photo on the left).

If a latch is installed in the door, a solid force is needed to overcome its resistance. For this option, a shoulder is placed perpendicular to the door (the rod is untwisted, making it longer).

Having exposed the parts accordingly, they are combined and connected. Actually everything, the installation of the closer on the door is completed. And you can handle it with your own hands, and without much difficulty. The final stage remains - setting the closing speed. To do this, you need to understand the adjustments of the door closers.

How to put on a gate

Frost-resistant models that can be used outside are suitable for installation on the gate. But not all gates have a top crossbar. But everyone has side racks. In this case, the rod is attached to the side post by turning the mounting plate along the post.

But hydraulic devices (they were discussed in this article) do not feel very good in the cold. The oil that is poured into the body and serves to “brake” the door leaf becomes more viscous, the gate closes more slowly. From this point of view, it is better to choose a pneumatic model for the gate (about selection and installation).

How to install on a metal door

Mounting the closer on metal doors differs only in the type of fasteners used and the size of the drill. Since the canvas is usually heavier, powerful models of at least class 5 are selected (you need to look at the table). Accordingly, the mounting template will need markup for another class.

You may also need a more powerful drill, but these are all details. Otherwise, you need to put the door closer on metal doors in the same way as wooden or metal-plastic ones.

Door closer adjustment

The closers that are installed on the doors have a different design and the adjusting screws are located in different places. Exactly everything is indicated in the passport or installation instructions. But, in general, the technique is the same:

  • turning the screw clockwise increases the speed/force;
  • turning counterclockwise - slow down / reduce force.

When adjusting the door closer, do not turn the screws several turns at once. Often just a quarter of a turn is enough, maybe a little more. Having knocked off the balance by tightening or unscrewing the screws too much, it is very difficult to set everything up again. You can even break the device or make it leak oil from the inside.

Adjustment of speed of opening of a door and "slamming" are on the case. Most often they are either on the front part under a protective cover or on its side surface.

In round or multi-faceted cases, the adjustments are located on the side of the case

A metal door is one of the essential realities of modern urban life. Most apartments in high-rise buildings, not to mention office buildings and house entrances, are equipped with just such doors. Such an influx of fans of metal doors is explained by the increased crime rate, and the need for people to secure their homes. In addition, a metal door looks much more representative and solid than a wooden one, which gives status and a certain respectability to the room from the outside.

But so that the metal door, especially the door leading to the entrance, or leading to public places, does not slam, frightening everyone around, special closers were invented for its soft move. Description of metal door closers

The closer is a modern invention. This device appeared after metal doors quickly rushed to be installed in all entrances of our country. And so the door closer appeared, which solved the existing problem. And now not a single office, entrance, store can do without this incredibly convenient device. The device works on the principle of hydraulics: due to external force pressure on a spring located in the closer.

It is interesting that at the dawn of its appearance, the installation of door closers, due to their exclusivity and lack of mass production, could only be afforded by some reputable companies and entrances of wealthy residential buildings. But with the establishment of conveyor production, the problem of the high cost of door closers has disappeared, and now these products are quite affordable for everyone. In addition, the design of the device is extremely simplified.

Hidden

Many experts consider this type to be the best choice. It is also called "frame", because in this case the main structure of the door closer is located inside the door frame. Mounting a hidden door closer on an already installed door will be quite laborious, since it will be necessary to process the metal sheet with special tools that are not available in every home.

Therefore, usually a specialist is invited to install this device. Due to the complexity of installation, a hidden door closer is already built into some metal doors during production, selling the entire structure as a finished product. This option is the most preferred.

Each device is accompanied by a corresponding template, which allows you to easily and effortlessly install.

markup

This stage is necessary in order to accurately establish where exactly the device will be attached. The exact designation of the attachment point will greatly simplify subsequent work. The markup includes fastening the template attached to the device with adhesive tape to the door. Then, according to this template, all the holes that need to be made in the door are marked with a core. The template should be attached closer to the door hinges at the top of the door block. Keep in mind that the device mechanism is located on the door leaf itself, and the lever is located on the frame.

Drill test

To make sure that the selected drill diameter fits the closer mounts, take an unnecessary sheet of metal and make a few holes on it for testing, then checking it with the device mounts. This measure will allow you not to make a mistake with the choice, especially if there is not much experience in such work.

After the holes are ready, the closer is attached, and its progress is checked. Position the closer housing so that the speed control valves are directed towards the door hinges.

The lever must be divided into two parts, and then screw the foot of the side lever to the door frame. For this we need . On the square shaft, which is available for each closer, put on the main lever, then fix it with a screw and washer. Move the side lever to a perpendicular position and connect it to the main lever. Make sure that the device is level, without distortion: securely and firmly.

Adjustment

After the device is fixed in place, it must be adjusted to ensure a flawless ride. Adjustment is carried out by rotating certain screws. How exactly to rotate, and in which direction, is indicated in the instructions. This work is carried out using a hex key.

Closer adjustment

It should be clarified that a typical closer model has only two adjusting screws. In this case, the first is responsible for the speed of opening and closing the door, and the second for closing at the last stage - the complete reaching (finishing) of the door leaf to its destination. Some more functional devices are equipped with additional adjustment options. So, you can set a forced deceleration, which will not allow you to sharply, jerk open the sash. The product itself does not require special care: no washing, no lubrication, no cleaning. However, especially responsible owners still periodically lubricate the mechanism and remove dirt if they appear. Those closers that are installed on the street side of the doors require seasonal adjustment.

When operating a door equipped with this useful mechanism, remember that you cannot speed it up by force. Trying to close the sash faster, you can disturb the adjustment of the screws of the device.

It is also impossible to insert wedges or other objects so that the door stays open for some time. This sometimes leads to damage to the entire mechanism, in particular, to leakage of oil from it. Sometimes such an oversight leads to the fact that the device has to be changed.
