Installation of sliding interior doors yourself. Installation of sliding interior doors

An excellent option for any apartment or house would be the installation of sliding interior doors. They can replace conventional swing doors and save space. With their help, you can effectively and beautifully divide the space of a large room by installing them in the right place from wall to wall. Having decided on the design and shape of the doors, it is necessary to purchase all the necessary parts, starting with the door leaf and ending with all the small details of fittings and subsequent finishing. How to install a sliding interior door with your own hands is best considered using the simplest design with one solid door leaf as an example. During the description of each stage, the nuances of installing other possible systems will also be described.

Getting ready to install

Before installing the door, you should tidy up the opening itself and decide on which side of the doorway the sliding doors will be mounted.

View the path of your usual following from the entrance to the apartment and to the farthest rooms. For aesthetic reasons, the sliding door mechanism is best produced from the side of the room you enter. This is especially true for doors that are not hidden in the wall or behind a false panel. However, in view of the fact that the space where the door leaf is retracted cannot be occupied by furniture and things, in the case of a passage from the corridor to the room, it is more logical to mount the entire structure from the side of the corridor. It does not often contain furniture.

Sliding door installation process

1. Installation of guides

The first step is the installation of sliding doors with your own hands by marking the walls to further secure the guides.

If a lower guide is used, it must be deepened into the floor. It is advisable to consider this at the stage of mounting the floor covering in order to fix the guide to the very base of the floor (concrete screed). You can check the horizontality of the guide using a level.

The top guide profile is installed next. The reference line should mark the position of the bottom edge of the guide. The height of its placement is equal to the height of the door leaf and an increase of 15-20 mm for the lower gap to the floor and the upper gap from the leaf to the guide. The last parameter can be determined from the instructions supplied with the fittings. Usually 10-20 mm for access to the adjusting nuts on the door holders.

It is necessary to strictly observe the horizontal installation of the guide, otherwise the door will subsequently begin to spontaneously shift towards the slope. You can check the correctness of its placement using the building or water level.

The length of the guide is twice the width of the door leaf plus 4-5 cm of margin for its normal course. The margin for installing plugs and space for a closer, if any, is also taken into account.

Sliding door delivery example

Usually, brackets are used to secure the top track, however, for massive doors made of solid wood or with glass, it will be necessary to strengthen the structure. To do this, it is better to use a wooden beam measuring 50x50 mm or wider, depending on the width of the guide profile, which will securely attach to the wall, and the guide is narrower to the beam. In the case when the door is mounted on a plasterboard wall, it is necessary to provide an additional profile in the wall frame and fasten the guide to it or in close proximity using drywall anchors. If the wall is monolithic or brickwork, then dowels are used (in the case of brickwork, the holes for the dowels are located in the volume of the brick, and not between them). Additional reinforcement and the use of a base in the form of a bar or profile is even more relevant if a sliding compartment door or multi-section options are installed, which involve the use of a guide with several grooves.

2. Fixing the holders on the door leaf, fittings (handles, locks)

The next step is to fix the brackets on the door leaf, with which it will hold on to the roller carriages. It is necessary to carry out their installation following the instructions, on the sides of the upper end of the door, retreating from the edge of 1 cm. The best option for any type of sliding doors, except when there will be a holder in the form of a clip on the sides of the door leaf. For fully glass doors, special fasteners are used in the form of metal plates with rubber substrates, between which the edge of the glass is clamped. Such tongs allow you to get rid of the need to make holes in the glass.

When an accordion door is being assembled, brackets with a swivel roller are installed on each section. Most often, each section is fixed in the central part, but it can also be fixed along the edges of the sections. In this case, on the first section, the bracket is held by one edge, and on the next, by the opposite. This is how the positions on all the constituent parts alternate.

At the same stage, you can mount the necessary elements in the door leaf, such as handles and locks. It is better to postpone the installation of the mating parts of the lock on the doorway until later, it is still necessary to hang the door on the guide and adjust it. It should be noted that for doors that will completely enter the wall space, handles and all fittings are selected and installed deep into the door leaf and do not protrude beyond its dimensions.

It is better to install brush seals on the lower or side end of the door after the first installation of the door on the rails and their adjustment.

3. Door leaf installation

By fixing the guide and the necessary elements on the door leaf, you can carry out a control installation to adjust the levels and check the steps already completed. For this step, you will need an assistant who will support the canvas while you start the roller carriages into the groove of the guide. If a partition door is installed to separate the space of the room and the guide is fixed from wall to wall, the carriages are brought into the guide in advance, which has a special window for this. Fixing the door leaf in this case comes down to joining the brackets-holders on the door and the anchor extending from the carriage.

4. Installation of limiters, closers

The limiters will prevent the movement of the door leaf along the guides and will not allow the carriages with rollers to fall out of it. It is important to distribute the stops correctly, especially if it is a multi-section or folding door. The limiters will not allow the design of such products to converge too tightly, thereby damaging the connection between the sections. As a limiter, plugs can be used, made in the form of a guide profile or as studs, which are inserted into the guide in the required places. It is advisable to choose limiters with special stops made of soft plastic or rubber. With them, there will be no constant sound of impacts when opening, and the moving parts of the doors will work longer.

5. Fixing platbands and extensions

Platbands close the mechanism of the sliding door to protect them from dust and debris and to give an aesthetic appearance. This is not true for doors built into the wall or behind a bezel. In this case, only corners are installed at the edges of the walls with brush seals to close the gap between them and the door leaf.

Platbands are installed on brackets pre-screwed to the wall or to the rail itself using latches. This option does not leave any visible fasteners on the outside.

A bounding structure is installed, against which the door will abut, in the closed state. This can be either a wooden beam with the necessary finish, or a special profile, which is purchased along with the rest of the fittings. It is installed strictly vertically, using a plumb line for this. In this profile, the counterpart of the locking mechanism of the door lock will be installed. Its installation should be postponed until the door is fully installed on the rails and adjusted.

6. Checking and final adjustment of the door

Since previously the guides for the doors were installed strictly horizontally, which prevents spontaneous opening or closing of the doors, the position of the leaf is adjusted to a greater extent for visually correct perception. The door must fit snugly and evenly against the boundary structure and move parallel to the floor surface. With this setting, you can visually eliminate some irregularities or distortions of the floor or walls by adjusting the average position of the door leaf.

After completing all the installation work, the ease of movement of the door and the operation of the locking fittings are checked. If everything works fine, then the installation was successful.

The tightness of standard city apartments forces their owners to use a variety of devices and structures, the operation of which will help save precious living space. Having made sliding doors on rollers with their own hands and installing them instead of traditional swing doors, the owner will be able to free up space for installing furniture or simply increase the free space of the premises. In addition, sliding structures are often installed in large openings between rooms and become a kind of mobile, allowing, if necessary, to divide them into different rooms or combine them into one large hall.

Having understood the principles of installation of such a design, it is quite possible to assemble and install sliding doors on your own, saving on the involvement of craftsmen, if you have the necessary tools at hand, and the owner himself has stable carpentry and locksmith skills and due care.

Advantages and disadvantages of sliding door structures

The choice of specific models of sliding doors depends on the layout of the apartment, as well as on the design of the rooms. But before purchasing interior sliding systems, you need to learn not only about their positive qualities, but also about their weaknesses.

So, sliding doors have the following positive qualities:

  • They provide significant space savings.
  • Unlike a hinged design, a sliding door will never randomly open and close from drafts.
  • Such doors even help to visually expand the small space of the apartment.
  • The advantage is the absence of thresholds in some types of such structures, which is extremely convenient if the apartment is inhabited by elderly or disabled people, as well as small children.
  • A sliding double door is able to divide the room into separate zones, which helps to optimally use the space of a one-room apartment.
  • With the right approach, the sliding door is not so difficult to install and easy to operate.
  • The sliding design is able to bring individuality into the standard layout of the apartment, to transform it aesthetically.
  • Thanks to modern technology, sliding doors are easy to automate, and this distinctive feature can be called one of the key advantages over hinged structures.

However, it is equally important to know the “cons” of such doors, since, having installed them, it will be necessary to observe some conditions for their operation:

  • The roller system and the guide rail along which the door leaf will move must always be maintained in good condition and clean, otherwise they may fail, and one day the door will jam in one position.
  • Usually, a standard sliding structure, unlike a hinged one, is unable to soundproof the divided rooms with high quality, since at least small gaps will remain between the door frame and the door leaf.
  • The door will not be able to contain the smells from cooking if it is planned to be installed at the entrance to the kitchen room.
  • All design parameters during its installation must be well measured, and its elements must be installed perfectly vertically and horizontally, otherwise the door may wedge. However, this requirement probably applies to any type of door structures.
  • Installing a double-leaf door is a more complicated process than one consisting of a single leaf, since the movable canvases will need to be very accurately adjusted not only to the doorway, but also to each other.
  • The high cost of sliding structures also cannot be attributed to the advantages.

Varieties of sliding doors

There are several types of sliding doors. They differ from each other in design, appearance and installation of the working mechanism.

All types of sliding doors have a common principle of operation, which distinguishes them from hinged structures - they move along a horizontal line, along the door and the wall. But, these systems are divided among themselves into various types and can be:

- traditional sliding;

- cascading;

- folding - "accordion";

- radial sliding.

Any of the existing structures can be single-leaf or multi-leaf. So, from two to four door panels can be included in a multi-leaf system.

If the door has not yet been selected, then it is worth considering the features of each type, and only after that decide on the design.

Traditional sliding doors

Traditional sliding doors are divided into suspended, cassette suspended, and having two guides - upper and lower.

  • Bottom and top rail design

This type of sliding doors is the most common, and most often chosen for installation in apartments, as it is considered the most reliable, of course, when the guides are correctly set and fixed. In this design, one or more leaves move along the upper and lower rails.

It should be noted right away that this type of sliding door is quite difficult for self-assembly, since it is necessary to perfectly fit the upper and lower guides to each other.

Find out a completely doable task from a new article on our portal.

The disadvantage of this system is the fact that the lower rail is mounted on the floor surface, that is, either a threshold will be formed, or a recess will have to be cut. In the guide profile, which is installed in the floor, dust and small debris will definitely collect, which can impede, slow down, and sometimes even block the movement of the door leaf, so you will need to constantly monitor the cleanliness of this assembly very carefully.

  • Hanging sliding doors

Suspended structures are also quite popular, as they do not require the installation of a rail in the floor and do not have a threshold, but move only along the upper rail.

The rail is fixed to the wall above the doorway or to the ceiling, depending on the height of the selected door and room. The guide can be located openly or closed with a masking or decorative casing.

The door leaf in this design option will be in limbo, at a distance of 10 ÷ 15 mm from the wall, so you need to take into account the fact that it will not work to put one of the pieces of furniture against the wall towards which the door will open.

Depending on how the interior will be decorated, the false panel that will cover the upper rail can be fixed only on the segment of the door movement or from wall to wall, and sometimes a similar “border” is placed around the entire perimeter of the room. In the latter case, it will serve as a decorative element of the interior and, in addition, will serve as a disguise for curtain rods. The option of fixing the border along all the walls of the room is possible if the door guide is high enough on the wall.

  • Hanging sliding cassette doors

This version of sliding doors can have a suspended structure or move along two rails. Its main difference from previous varieties is the location of the rails and canvas inside the doorway. That is, when moving the door along the guides, it will go into a niche arranged in a wall special for this purpose.

If a similar design is chosen in a private house, then it is usually provided in advance, when building walls or partitions. Well, in an apartment, such a niche is formed from a plasterboard structure, but in this case, you need to consider that the size of the room will decrease by about 100÷120 mm.

The advantage of this option can be called a tighter fit of the end side of the door when it is closed and the absence of an open gap between the wall and the canvas, which means that the sound insulation of the rooms will be an order of magnitude higher than in any other sliding structure.

In addition, by installing a similar kind of doors, you can free up the wall and the space in front of it, adding aesthetics and comfort to the interior.

However, considering all the alterations that will need to be made when installing cassette sliding doors, it is clear that the total cost of their installation will be quite high, even if all the work is done independently.

Cascade sliding structures

The cascading version of the sliding doors is arranged according to the same principle as the traditional one, with upper and lower guides, but differs in that it consists of several canvases, each of which moves along its own separate rail. Therefore, such a system can be moved apart in the form of a partition, dividing the room into two zones, or be assembled near one of the walls and block the room only by the width of one sheet.

Such systems are usually used as partitions, but they may well become a wall with a door if only one of the panels is moved. Such sliding structures are most often made of natural or polymer glass of different shades, and have a height from ceiling to floor, so the lower guides are built into the floor, and the upper ones are fixed to the ceiling.

Very often, such systems are used to create glazed verandas or terraces - there is always the opportunity to turn the room into an open summer recreation area.

How can you rationally use the veranda or terrace

Modern window and door designs allow you to fully use the premises of the house or outbuildings in the winter, and in the summer, turn them into open cozy recreation areas. An example is, which are described in a special publication of our portal.

Sliding design - "accordion"

The sliding system "accordion" can act as a partition or door. It consists of several canvases interconnected by end loops.

Sliding folding door design - "accordion"

This is a rather complicated design for self-production, and assembly is best done with the invitation of an experienced specialist.

The width of the door panels can be different - it depends on the size of the opening and the free space that can be allocated for the structure when folded.

The "accordion" system can be installed in a standard or wide doorway, as well as a partition that divides the room into zones. When installing it to act as a partition, the rails are mounted on the floor and ceiling.

The characteristic disadvantages of this design include the almost complete lack of sound and heat insulation.

Radius sliding structures

Sliding radius systems give the interior of any room a special charm, but to install them, you will have to create a semicircular plasterboard wall. This type of structure can be used for installation in a doorway or serve as a full-fledged room partition, installed from ceiling to floor.

The radius version is mounted on the upper and lower rails, and can walk along the outer or inner side of the wall, as well as be built into it, that is, the walls empty inside will become a cassette into which the door leafs will hide when they are opened.

A well-made and properly installed structure of this type is capable of creating a sufficiently high sound and heat insulation. However, if there is no experience in installing a radius system of sliding doors and plasterboard structures, but there is a great desire to have such a decorative and functional element in the interior of your apartment, then it is better to entrust its installation to an experienced master - self-installation will be extremely difficult.

Production and installation of a sliding door on rollers

Materials for assembling a suspended door structure

The suspended structure is the easiest option for self-assembly, so it’s worth considering how all the work is carried out and what materials will be needed for them.

  • Depending on the size of the doorway, one or two door leaves will be required. In this case, it is necessary to take into account the massiveness of the canvases, since according to this parameter the fittings elements that should keep them in weight will be selected.

For a suspended structure, the canvas should be larger than the doorway.

  • The upper guide is a rail along which the door leafs will move with the help of roller mechanisms fixed to them. The length of the guide should be equal to twice the width of one or two door leaves.

The top guide is a metal profile. It requires a beam of the same length
  • A wooden beam, equal in length to the rail, and having a cross-sectional size of at least 50 × 50 mm - a guide will be fixed to it.
  • A set of rollers and fasteners, selected according to the weight and thickness of one or two canvases.

  • Quality boards or panels for framing a doorway - making a box.
  • Three platbands - two vertical and one horizontal, for the doorway, and a false panel that will cover the timber and the guide, fixed above the doorway.
  • It can be built into the structure, if desired, it is installed for easier closing of the door leaf.
  • One or two sets of door handles.

  • Anchors for fixing the timber to the wall.
  • Self-tapping screws.
  • Fasteners for installing architraves and false panels.
  • Mounting polyurethane foam to fill the gaps between the door frame and the wall.

If there is no certainty that the door leaf will be made independently with the required quality, then it is better to purchase it ready-made, since doors produced on professional equipment will look much more impressive.

Tools for the job

Now about the tools, without which it will not be possible to make a door system and install it.

The list of the minimum required includes the following items:

  • Electric drill (perforator) with drills for wood and concrete.
  • Circular saw, electric jigsaw and hand saw.
  • Screwdriver.
  • Building level, plumb line, 1000 mm ruler, square, tape measure, folding rule.
  • Electric or conventional planer.
  • Manual milling machine with a set of necessary cutters.
  • Hammer, chisel, pliers.

Door leaf manufacturing

If the door will be made independently, then you need to know what it can be made of, and what models of canvases can be used in this design.

Suspended doors can be solid, paneled or with the use of artificial glass installed in a frame with a different number of lintels. A solid canvas can be made from solid boards, chipboard or well-crafted wooden beams and plywood. It should be noted that all these materials are quite massive, so the finished versions of hanging doors are often made using high-quality plastic or metal, which is used as a frame for installing transparent synthetic glass inserts into it.

In any case, whether the doors are purchased ready-made or made independently, the parameters of the canvas should be selected depending on the size of the doorway. The exact ratios of these dimensions can be found in the tables above.

For example, for a doorway with one leaf measuring 865 × 2175 mm, with a box installed in it, you will need a door with a size of 900 × 2200 mm, and when installing a double-leaf structure in an opening measuring 1765 × 2175 mm, the leaves should have a size of 900 + 900 ×2200 mm.

If a chipboard panel of the right size is purchased as a blank for the door, it can be made lighter by cutting out one or more windows in it, then milling their edges and installing thin plywood or glass in them.

The manufacturing process of a glazed or lightweight chipboard sheet is carried out as follows:

  • The panel is marked up to begin with. In this case, it is necessary to observe the condition that, in any case, at least 150 mm must be retreated from the edges. Thus, the framing of a door leaf made of chipboard should not be narrower than this size.
  • After marking, the inner parts of the panel are cut with an electric jigsaw. In order to carry out this process, a hole is drilled in one of the marking corners, then a jigsaw blade is inserted into it, and the marked parts of the panel are carefully cut out.
  • Next, you need to qualitatively process the inner edges resulting from cutting out the openings, otherwise they will look sloppy. This work can be done in two ways - to process the edges with a milling cutter or to ennoble with a relief glazing bead. The bead is cut to the size of the windows, then glued or nailed around the entire perimeter on one side of the panel.

  • Further, according to the size of the window, glass or an insert from plywood is cut out, and installed in it, pressing against the fixed glazing bead. After that, the inserts on the other side are fixed with a second glazing bead.
  • The end surfaces of the chipboard door leaf can be ennobled with a special decorative thermal tape, which is glued with a conventional iron.
  • If plywood inserts are installed in the cut-out windows, they can be adjusted to the overall color before installation by painting, staining or laminating. Glazing beads should also have a color close to all elements of the door structure.
  • Doors can also be made from timber of different cross-sectional dimensions, but the thickness of the frame frame should not be more than 30 mm.

The beam for the manufacture of such a door leaf must be of high quality and well processed.

The beam from which the internal lintels of the frame will be made must have a smaller or the same thickness as the frame. The size of the glazing bead and the thickness of the panels that will be installed in the formed windows must be thought out in advance, since the first should not protrude outward relative to the surface of the entire door leaf.

It should be noted that the manufacture of a frame door from a bar is a more complicated process, since all elements of the frame are fastened together with extreme accuracy and reliability, otherwise the finished canvas can “lead”, that is, its frame is deformed.

  • There are several methods for joining timber, but the most popular are in the "half-tree" and "in the paw". They are quite simple to cut, keep the structure well from deformation and securely fasten the elements together.

It is better if the bars are fastened together not with metal screws, or even more so with nails, but with special wooden dowels that are driven into holes drilled through the diameter at the nodes of the adhesive joints of the bars. For each of these door frame nodes, it is necessary to use two dowels installed diagonally.

  • In the lower end part of the leaf, over its entire width, a groove is milled for the flag roller or, as it is called in another way, the lower door latch.

Hanging system installation

When the door leaf is ready, it is necessary to fix the fittings on it - these are roller mechanisms, special locks or handles that are different from those installed in the usual swing structures. In any sliding doors, the handles are recessed into the canvas, as they should not interfere with its movement.

  • The first step is to mark the location of the handle on both sides of the door leaf. It should be located at a distance of 35÷50 mm from the vertical edge of the panel.
  • After that, from the marked line, the width of the nest and its height are marked. Further, a distance equal to half the width of the future hole is measured from the upper marking point - this point will be the center of the circle, which is drilled with a crown drill of the desired diameter.

  • The same process is carried out on the underside of the marked socket for the pen. You should get two non-through recesses, having a depth to which the handle will be recessed into the canvas.
  • Then, the wood between the two marked crowns with round recesses is selected using a milling cutter or chisel and a hammer.
  • Handles in sliding structures are fixed in those cut out with glue, for example, “liquid nails”, or snapped into special fasteners, which are pre-screwed into the resulting opening.
  • The next step on the upper end side of the door leaf, you need to mark and fix the roller mechanisms with self-tapping screws. Under them, most likely, you will have to choose curly grooves with a milling cutter (chisel).
  • The rollers must be fixed at a certain distance from the edges of the door leaf. This parameter is indicated in the instructions attached to the set of metal fittings.
  • Now the finished door can be set aside for the time being, and you can start upgrading, of course, if the door frame is not already installed in it.
  • It is much easier to assemble and install a frame for sliding doors than for swing structures, since it consists of three absolutely even elements - two vertical and one horizontal boards (panels), fastened together with long self-tapping screws.

The box can be made of solid board or chipboard - this factor does not play a big role in this case, since no load falls on the mounted structure. Its only purpose is to give the doorway a neat and aesthetic appearance.

  • The fastened frame is installed in the doorway and wedged with wooden spacers, which are driven between its panels and the wall to achieve perfect verticality and horizontality of the walls.

The position of the box panels is controlled using a building level and a plumb line. When the structure is installed perfectly accurately, it is fixed to the walls. This can be done by drilling through holes in the boards of the box or by screwing metal plates to the end sides of the boards and to the wall.

  • Further, on the prepared beam, equal in length to the double width of the door leaf, a metal guide for the rollers is fixed with the help of self-tapping screws.
  • Holes are pre-drilled in the beam through which it will be fixed on the wall.
  • After that, roller mechanisms mounted on the door are inserted into the guide rail.

  • The whole structure is attached to the doorway, leveled, if necessary, temporarily propped up with wooden wedges, and then the beam is “tightly” screwed to the wall.
  • Next, the door moves to one side and the other of the guide to determine the places at the beginning and end of the rail where travel stops or stoppers for the web will be fixed. Stoppers in different models of doors may have a different design.

  • The next step in front of the open door, in its lower end part, in a cut groove, a flag roller is installed and screwed to the floor. It should be perfectly level under the top guide rail.

This lower stop does not allow the door leaf to go to the side, that is, it does not allow its transverse vibrations.

  • Further, the gaps between the wall and the boards of the door frame are filled with mounting foam. After it dries, the protruding surplus is cut off.
  • Then the timber and the guide rail are decorated with a false panel, and the gaps between the door frame and the wall are trimmed.

In the considered case, the installation of the simplest sliding suspended structure, not complicated by unnecessary elements, was presented. Therefore, the installation of such a system seems to be quite affordable for independent implementation by any home master, of course, subject to taking into account all the nuances and following technological recommendations.

Installing sliding interior doors can save space in an apartment and a private house when the owners seek to expand their living space. You can install the structure yourself if the owner of the house has the skills of carpentry and the necessary tools.

There are several types of construction:

  • sliding;
  • cascading;
  • folding;
  • radial sliding.

Making sliding doors with your own hands is easier than other types of partitions. This is due to the simplicity of design, shape, installation of the canvas and installation of fittings. Depending on the width of the opening, the sliding door device provides for 1 or 2 canvases that move along special rails along the wall. Partitions can be independently made of different materials.

Advantages and disadvantages

The interior single-leaf or multi-leaf door has the following advantages:

  1. saves room space;
  2. visually increases the size of the room;
  3. there is no threshold;
  4. you can divide a large room into zones.

The disadvantages include:

  • poor sound insulation;
  • the need to keep the rail clean;
  • easy penetration of odors between rooms;
  • the need for precise adjustment of all structural elements.

Before you learn how to make a sliding door, you need to prepare materials and tools.

Materials and tools

You will need these tools:

  1. tape measure, ruler, square and pencil;
  2. electric jigsaw or circular saw;
  3. screwdriver;
  4. drill;
  5. drills of different diameters for wood and concrete;
  6. self-tapping screws;
  7. roller mechanisms;
  8. construction plumb line and level;
  9. milling machine;
  10. sandpaper or grinder;
  11. chisel and hammer.

Fabrics can be made from the following materials:

  • plain or laminated chipboard;
  • strained glass;
  • solid wood;
  • combination of several materials.

The weight of the structure depends on the material of manufacture. To mount sliding doors with your own hands, you need to select mechanisms based on this indicator. The material for the canvas is selected based on the budget of the owners and the functional purpose of the door.

How to make sliding doors with your own hands?

For the manufacture of glass partitions, skills in working with this material are required. If they are missing, you should contact the professionals. Working with glass requires special tools that are expensive.

It is necessary to consider how to assemble a sliding door made of wood. This material is easy to process, stronger and more reliable, has better sound insulation, frame products weigh less than solid wood, and panels can be made if desired.

Design features

Before starting work, you should draw up a diagram or drawing of the structure and indicate all the parameters. The design of sliding doors can have one or more canvases, depending on the size of the opening. You can make a solid canvas or with panels of various materials. Depending on the weight of the structure, the door can be suspended or on roller mechanisms.

Sometimes a product is installed that slides deep into the wall. To do this, dismantle part of the partition and make a drywall niche.

Preparatory work

Before making a sliding door with your own hands, you should prepare the material. Boards or bars must be processed with a planer and sanded with sandpaper or a grinder. You should also prepare a shield if you plan to have a hollow door inside. In advance, it is worth deciding on the method of fastening the boards. Common connections are:

  1. half a tree;
  2. thorn-groove.

Measurements and markings

When making a door on rollers with your own hands, it must be borne in mind that the canvas should be several centimeters larger than the opening on each side. If the passage does not exceed 80 cm in width, then a single door is made. When the width of the opening exceeds 1 m, 2 canvases are made. All dimensions are transferred to bars or boards.

Manufacturing

To make frame sliding doors with your own hands, you need to make a frame. Pre-prepared bars are cut according to the drawing. If the design includes panels, recesses are made in the inner part of the frame and lintels by a milling machine into which the inserts will be mounted.

The joints of boards or beams are coated with wood glue or PVA. Wood should be treated with an antiseptic to protect the material from decay and the harmful effects of insects. Additionally, the structure is coated with flame retardants, which prevent the wood from quickly igniting.

To make a sliding door mechanism with your own hands, you will need:

  • upper and lower guides along which the canvas will move;
  • a wooden beam to which the upper rail is attached;
  • rollers and fasteners corresponding to the weight of the structure;
  • clamps that prevent the web from coming off the rails.

Paneled

First, a frame is made from solid boards or glued beams. This material is used to make crossbars and a mullion. From the inside, the timber is processed with a milling cutter, making a groove for the panels. If you make a curly cut, you can not use glazing beads. When it is planned to install the latter, the surface near the groove is made even.

Vertical and horizontal elements are interconnected by means of a spike and a groove. The spike is cut out in transverse parts. It should fit into the groove up to half the width of the timber. The recess is adjusted to the dimensions of the spike so that the parts fit snugly into each other.

As panels can act:

  1. glass;
  2. plywood;
  3. thin boards, etc.

Inserts can be flat or have a relief surface. In the second case, plywood or boards are used, which are processed with a milling machine. The edges of the product should be less than the groove in the frame by 1-2 mm. This will allow the panels to move freely. When all the elements are ready, they are treated with antiseptics.

Assemble the entire structure on the table to avoid distortions. The joints are coated with glue. First, all the crossbars and panels are inserted into one longitudinal beam, then the second vertical beam is glued. The glazing beads are installed after the entire structure is assembled and fixed with glue.

Shield

This design can be solid, small-hollow or hollow. The first type consists of a frame and boards that fit between the vertical elements. Hollow and small-hollow contain transverse elements that give the entire structure rigidity.

First, a frame is made according to the size of the canvas. To do this, cut off a bar with a section of 30x120 mm according to the drawing. The elements are interconnected by fastening in half a tree or in a paw. The surfaces are coated with glue and clamped with clamps. Make sure that the inside corners are 90°.

After the glue dries, the joints are additionally fastened with dowels. To do this, holes of 7-9 mm are made and dowels pre-treated with glue are inserted into them. Then one side of the frame should be revetted. Plywood or fiberboard is chosen as the material, which is cut to the size of the frame. The facing material is fixed with glue.

If the structure is solid, then the frame is filled with timber, pieces of MDF or other low-quality wood. All parts are glued together and additionally glued to the facing sheet. In the frame of hollow or small-hollow doors, crossbars are installed, which are fixed with glue to the sidewalls and facing material. The second sheet is installed only after the glue has completely dried.

How to install a sliding door?

Installation of sliding doors may vary depending on the design features. Installation involves the following steps:

  • preparation of the doorway;
  • fastening of guide elements;
  • canvas installation;
  • inset handles.

To properly install, you must follow the installation instructions for sliding doors exactly.

Preparation of the interior opening

First of all, you need to prepare an opening. If the canvas moves along the wall, remove all protruding elements, level the surface, putty the cracks. The canvas must move without obstacles. Since the design does not provide for a pit, the walls are plastered. The opening should be as even and smooth as possible.

If you plan to install a sliding door inside the partition, you should dismantle part of the wall. To do this, increase the opening to the width of the door leaf, and then mount a drywall niche. The partition should go into the wall so that only a small part of the canvas remains, on which the handle is located.

Mounting guides

If the canvas is light, it is hung only on the top rail. If the sash is made of wood and is heavy, it must be fixed in the lower runners. Since a sliding door can be installed on 1 or 2 rails, both options must be considered.

To mount the upper guide, a canvas is placed to the opening. Measure the position of the door in the closed and open state. 7 cm recede upwards from the resulting line and draw a horizontal line. It determines the position of the beam on which the rail is attached.

The length of the beam must correspond to the guide. It is placed in such a way that the middle falls exactly above the upper corner of the opening from the side of the open door. Then carry out the fastening of the guide profile.

The upper runners are fixed with self-tapping screws. Then the carriage with rollers is assembled and inserted into the guides. It is necessary to check whether the mechanism moves freely in the rail. Limiters are installed along the edges of the guides so that the canvas does not jump out of the rut.

The bottom groove is made using a milling machine. It should be 1-2 mm larger than the guide knife, and the depth is 18 mm. If the design does not provide for a lower rail, then a flag guide stopper is installed on the floor. It should go into the groove in the door leaf. Its task is to limit the movement of the canvas and exclude transverse oscillations of the sash from below.

Canvas installation

Installation of sliding doors is carried out after the installation of all guides. First you need to install the mounting brackets. They are fixed with self-tapping screws to the upper end of the door, after making holes with a thin drill. The canvas is hung on the upper rail, and then brought into the lower guide. The carriages with rollers are connected to the brackets so that the nut and washer are on top. Then the fasteners are tightened with a wrench. After checking the movement along the upper guide, the blade can be installed in the lower groove.

Accessories

Installation of sliding interior doors will be incomplete without installing fittings. For such structures, mortise handles are used, as well as special locks. Locking devices are rarely installed, since the level of protection of such mechanisms is low. To make pens, you will need:

  1. Ruler and pencil;
  2. milling machine;
  3. chisel and hammer;
  4. screws and screwdriver.

First, mark the position of the handles. They are placed at the level of the belt at a distance of 4-5 cm from the vertical edge of the canvas. Handles are applied to the door and circled with a pencil. In size, a recess is made to the thickness of the fittings with a milling machine or chisel. You can also use a drill with a drill bit of the required diameter. A hole should be made from the bottom and from the top side of the handle. The tree between the recesses is removed with a chisel or milling cutter.

To install sliding doors with a mortise lock, you need to make a recess in the end of the leaf with a drill. A locking mechanism is mounted in the groove and closed with a special bar. The handle in this case is not used mortise, but a bracket. In the opening, a recess is made for the reciprocal bar. If the lock is padlocked, it is screwed with screws to the door leaf.

To prevent dust from entering the room, special brush seals are attached to the lower end of the canvas. If the design of the partition provides for 2 sashes, special seals are additionally installed at the ends of the adjacent canvases.

Installation of sliding doors should be carried out on high-quality roller carriages. Despite the high cost of mechanisms, they significantly save money in the future. Cheap rollers quickly fail with frequent use, they need to be changed. High-quality carriages will last a long time.

The cheapest way to make a door leaf is from a simple or laminated chipboard, MDF. This material can be decorated to your taste. This can be done with varnish, paint, self-adhesive film, wallpaper, or in any other way.

For wooden doors, you should choose material dried in special cabinets. Otherwise, the structure may be deformed in the first months of operation, then the frame will have to be redone.

Repair

Occasionally, sliding doors may need to be repaired. A common failure is poor blade movement in the guides. To do this, you need to either adjust the roller, or replace it. Sometimes debris gets into the guides, dust and dirt accumulate, which over time does not allow the mechanisms to move freely. To avoid this, you should clean the rails in a timely manner.

Interior doors are one of the key elements in the interior of a house or apartment. Installing door structures allows you to solve several problems at once: isolate a particular room from other rooms, increase its level of comfort by protecting it from noise and drafts. Modern manufacturers offer the consumer door structures in a wide range of types, and one of the most popular solutions is interior sliding doors.

The key difference between sliding doors and other types of products is how they open and close - the slider simply moves apart, moves to the side or diverges. In the article we will talk in detail about the advantages of sliding doors, their features, and also provide step-by-step instructions for self-assembly of structures.

Types, pros and cons of sliding interior doors

The demand for sliding interior doors among buyers is growing and this is due to the fact that their installation in the interior allows rational and ergonomic use of living space, which is especially important for rooms with a small area. Sliders are graded into several separate varieties:

  • structures built into the wall. Their installation involves the installation of rollers on the door leaf and guides on the wall or doorway. Such sliders open and close similarly to compartment doors, that is, when the rollers move along the guide elements, the doorway will open to enter or exit the room.
  • Accordion sliders. Doors of this type are made of small-sized lamellas, which, when folded, open the entrance to the room.

Sliding accordion doors are an interesting option for a modern interior, but it is extremely important to choose a design made of high quality and good materials, otherwise the product will quickly fail and lose its useful functionality.

Before deciding whether you will install interior sliding doors in your home, you should study in detail all the pros and cons of the structures. The advantages of sliders include the following characteristics:

  1. The originality of the solution, allowing you to create an ultra-modern interior;
  2. Space saving;
  3. Safety in operation;
  4. Reliable room insulation.

Cons of interior sliding doors are also available. In particular, it should be borne in mind that their installation is not an easy and rather expensive process, and the design itself and its elements will require regular maintenance.

Features of the functioning mechanism

In order to install interior sliding doors with your own hands with high quality, it would be advisable to study in detail the mechanism of operation of structures in advance, which can be:

  • Hidden type. Movements to open and close the door will take place in the intra-wall space, and therefore the mechanism will need to be installed at the stage of wall construction by installing the door case inside.
  • Open type. Doors with such a mechanism can be easily mounted at any stage of repair and construction, including the finishing stages. Installation of the product will not require adjustments to the wall structure, since the movement of the web will occur along the guide elements located along the wall surface.

Doors with an external functioning mechanism are presented on the market in a wide range, which gives an excellent opportunity to choose the best option for any interior style and room dimensions.

Having decided on the type of door according to the mechanism of operation, it is also important not to lose sight of the moment for the selection of guide elements - profiles along which the door leaf will move during operation. Profiles can be mounted in different areas of the doorway - in its upper or lower part, on both sides at once.

The easiest option is to install the sliding door on the skids placed at the top. Profiles mounted in the upper part of the opening have a fairly long service life, since they are less susceptible to mechanical damage. However, this arrangement of elements is suitable only for door structures of low weight.

Roller for sliding doors

For heavy doors, it is better to use a combined version of the guides, which also give a smoother run of the blade when opening and closing, but the installation of guides at the bottom is rarely used, since the skids mounted in this area are quickly deformed and require constant cleaning.

Step-by-step guide for self-assembly of sliding interior doors

Below we provide detailed instructions for self-installation of doors with an external functioning mechanism. The process of preparing for installation work always begins with the acquisition of material and the collection of tools that may come in handy. It is worth preparing in advance:

  • The door structure itself with all accessories;
  • Door fittings - profiles, locks, handles, rollers;

The number of rollers is determined by the weight of the door - if its indicator exceeds the figure of 30 kg, then it is advisable to use four rollers. It is better to purchase locks and handles of a hidden type in order to avoid damage to the finishing of the walls in the course of work.

  • Bars with a section of 50x30 for fixing the runners;
  • fasteners;

From the tool in the installation work, a level, tape measure, hacksaw, drill and chisel will come in handy.

Training

At this stage of work on the installation of an interior sliding door, it is important to accurately determine the place of its installation and the side of its opening. After measurements and calculations, the old structure (if any) is dismantled from the opening, and the opening itself is cleaned of debris, dust and dirt, after which a box is installed in it.

When installing the box in the opening, do not forget about the need for a technological gap between the door structure and the floor surface. If the floor in your house is completely done, it will be enough to leave a gap of ten millimeters high before the final finishing layer under the gap. If the finishing of the surfaces is yet to be done, it is necessary to add the height of the screed and the thickness of the surface finish to the height of the gap.

Opening work

This stage begins with measurements - you should determine the height and width of the door structure. To obtain accurate indicators, measurements are taken at several points at once - at the top, in the center and at the bottom. The height of the structure is measured in two states at once, closed and open, this approach to measurements will take into account floor irregularities and avoid errors when installing the door.

Next, you need to strengthen the bars. They are installed along a line that is drawn directly above the top edge of the box. The center of the installed timber should be above the side of the box that you choose to open the door. That is, if the door opens to the right side, then the center of the bar should be on the right side of the box.

After fixing the beam in the selected area, the upper guide elements are mounted. They are fixed on the bar with fasteners. A simple test will help you make sure that the guides are fixed correctly: run the roller along the profiles and if it moves freely and easily, you did everything right!

Installation of the lower guides can be carried out in various ways:

  • The institution of rails in part of the subfloor.
  • By installing elements directly on the floor surface, followed by closing it with a threshold. The threshold will protect the skids from mechanical damage.
  • Installing a bag knife that will support the structure and ensure its proper movement.

Another option is a non-threshold system with carriages and roller elements. It is optimal because the door structure will move easily when opening and closing, there is no damage to the floor covering, and there is no need to spend time installing rails.

Assembly and installation phase

To assemble a sliding door, you should first install a roller mechanism on it in the upper end of the structure. At the bottom of the product is done. To properly make a groove, you need to drill holes on both sides, at a distance of about 15 millimeters from the edge. Between the finished holes choose a groove with a depth of ten to eighteen millimeters.

Having finished with the fittings, you just have to install the door into the opening into the guides. Having put the structure in place, be sure to check its progress and, if everything is fine, insert rubber shock absorbers into the profiles, which play the role of limiters that hold the door in place.

They complete the installation of an interior sliding door by masking all noticeable structural elements. For this purpose, decorative platbands are used.

As a conclusion

Interior doors are a beautiful and functional element of residential interiors, which can last for a long time, provided that the structure is properly installed and regularly maintained. There is also nothing complicated in installing the product - you just need to spend time studying some of the features of the work and have basic skills and knowledge in the field of home repair.

We hope the article helped you learn useful details on the process of self-assembly of interior sliding doors, and now you will be able to easily do this work on your own, without involving professional craftsmen.

You feel much more comfortable in an apartment or house if there are interior doors. With their help, you can divide the space and isolate different rooms. Recently, an increasing number of people are leaning towards buying sliding doors, as their design has a lot of advantages, and do-it-yourself installation will also save a decent amount.

What are they for?

Very often, during repair work in any residential area, the owners decide which doors to install: hinged or sliding. But, on reflection, many come to the conclusion that it is better to install sliding structures, since they the benefits are clear on closer inspection.

  • The undoubted advantage of sliding doors is significant space savings absolutely any room. Due to the fact that the leafs of such doors slide parallel to the wall or hide in a special niche, they do not need space for opening and closing. In addition, some interior items can be installed close to these sliding structures; this will not work with swing doors.
  • Unlike hinged structures, a sliding door of any modification unable to open from a gust of draft: The canvas is held at both the top and bottom.
  • This mount in the sliding door does not make creaking sounds unlike a swing door, where hanging a canvas is impossible without the use of creaking hinges.

  • Due to the fact that manufacturers produce many modifications, you can choose not only the size, but also the material at your discretion for future design.
  • The undoubted advantage of sliding structures is their security. Especially for families with small children. In swing structures there is a gap between the door leaf and the jamb, and often their fingers end up there out of curiosity or by accident. The sliding design eliminates this possibility.
  • Thanks to various modifications of sliding doors you can beautifully combine adjacent rooms. Doors to the hall from the kitchen or dining room can be installed based on the overall interior design, choosing the option that is most in harmony with all rooms.
  • No Thresholds in sliding structures is a definite plus for apartments or houses inhabited by people moving in wheelchairs.

Kinds

Interior sliding doors can be classified according to several indicators: the type of movement of the structure, the number of door panels, the material of manufacture, the location of the rollers.

Movement type

According to the type of movement, the door leaf can move and hide when opened inside a special niche or be open.

Hidden

Such a hidden mechanism is equipped, as a rule, even at the stage of repair. The free space required to accommodate the door leaf along with the mechanism is equipped by thickening the wall. A pocket or case for a door is made either from drywall or from a special metal cassette.

Thanks to this placement, the width of the wall will, of course, increase, but this configuration will allow you to install pieces of furniture near the door, hang a picture or place flowers in pots on special pedestals.

Open

The installation of a sliding door can be carried out according to the open type. The external sliding system involves the open movement of the door leaf.

For its device, it is not required to build a hidden pencil case, and therefore this design can be installed at any time, regardless of the time of repair work. The door leaf moves parallel to the wall and therefore it is necessary to leave free space on the side where the door will be located in the open state.

Number of leaves

Depending on the number of door panels, sliding structures are divided into options with one door and types consisting of two wings. Less common are more complex options: three- and four-leaf designs.

The single-leaf design is compact in size and is most often installed in rooms with a small area. When opened, the door leaf moves along either the right or left side of the wall.

Models with two leaves are a suitable option for wider openings.

In addition, this design has several options for movement. Most often, the doors open in different directions when opening the passage. But there are other configurations, when one leaf remains motionless and rests against the doorway, while the other moves from one side of the opening to the other. There are models where the fixed sash rests against the opening, and the second one moves towards the wall. There are also options where both wings can move from one side to the other, while resting against the doorway.

Material

Depending on the materials used, door leafs are made of glass, wood, chipboard. There are also combined options.

  • Glass door leaves visually increase the interior space of the room. As a rule, the sheets are made of impact-resistant glass and therefore do not pose any danger. Doors made of glass panels go well with many styles used to decorate the room.
  • Sliding structures can also be made of precious wood, chipboard, as well as wood lined with MDF.
  • Combined door leafs contain both wood and glass.

Location of guides

Sliding doors vary depending on where the rails are installed. They can be installed at the top or bottom, there is also a combined installation method.

  • top location profiles is more popular. The hinged method is suitable for door panels that are light in weight. Thanks to this method, the doors function for quite a long time and are not as prone to breakage as with the lower location of the guides.
  • bottom location used less often, as it is more prone to deformation. Profiles located on the floor need regular cleaning, and a door that rests only on the bottom profile slides less smoothly.
  • The most successful and reliable way is combined arrangement of guides. It is suitable for heavy doors. The presence of upper and lower rails is often used in wardrobes. Furniture sliding structures are a universal system and are installed not only in the cabinet frame, but between two walls, in a niche, with their help you can decorate any opening.

In order to open or close sliding doors, you need to apply some physical force, but there are models where mechanical action is not required.

These are automatic sliding structures that have a more complex structure compared to conventional models. Doors are driven by an electric drive according to a signal from sensors. Most often, automatic structures are installed at the entrance to rooms with high traffic. It can be office and shopping centers, government and educational institutions, as well as cafes and restaurants.

Installing sliding doors with your own hands is not such a difficult task. It is quite possible to independently install both an open and a closed system.

Any type of this design consists of a door leaf (the number of leaves depends on the configuration), guides, limiters, at least two rollers, an upper patch panel (not available in some designs), platbands, fasteners (bolts, self-tapping screws and other elements).

Before installation, it is necessary to prepare the tools, because without them installation will be impossible. First of all, they prepare a construction tape measure and a special level, you will also need a drill or a puncher (depending on the type of walls). Not superfluous will be: a screwdriver, a plumb bob, a small hammer, a pencil (marker).

Each installation method has its own correct instructions. Depending on the location of the structure, there are: hidden installation, when the door is removed into a special case when opened, and external installation, when the movement of the leaf is not hidden either when opening or closing the door.

For the correct installation of the sliding structure, it is necessary to follow the instructions step by step.

Open sliding design

Before installation, first of all, it is necessary to dismantle the old door, the hinges on which it hung and the trim. It is also better to remove the door frame, as it can interfere with the installation of a sliding structure.

Now you need to tidy up the doorway. We remove all irregularities: putty, plaster and level the edges. The lower part of the opening must be parallel to the floor, an error of no more than 5 mm is allowed. It is worth considering the thickness of the flooring. In its absence, it must be done taking into account the thickness of the coating.

Using a plumb line, the side surfaces are checked, they may have deviations within 3-5 mm. It is better if the walls have a perfectly flat surface, then the door leaf will fit well.

Now you can start installing the door frame. To align it, you will need special wedges that will be located between the box and the wall. By adjusting the location of the wedges and the degree of recession in the opening, you can achieve an even position of the door frame. You can check the correct installation either using a plumb line or using a building level. Having achieved even placement, you can fix the structure with a screwdriver.

Before fixing the upper guides, it is necessary to make sure that the door leaf is suspended evenly. To do this, you need to attach the canvas to the wall next to the door frame and make a mark on the top. Then the canvas is inserted into the opening and a mark is also made.

If both marks match (draw a line), then the floor is flat, and installation can begin.

From the resulting line we measure 5-7 cm in the direction of the ceiling and draw a line. With the help of it, we mark the location of the beam. The length of the beam should be twice the width of the leaf plus 10 cm. If a double-leaf system is attached, then the length of the beam and profile should be 4 times the width of one leaf and plus a few cm. This is necessary so that the door opens the door completely when opened. opening.

The location of the beam depends on the number of wings. If there is only one leaf, then the fastening of the timber depends on the side of the door opening. Its middle can be located both above the right side and above the left. If it is planned to install two wings, then the length of the beam is divided into three parts, where the middle part should be located above the opening.

Pencil case

The width of the pencil case should be twice as large as the door leaf, it should be completely hidden in the pencil case when the wings are opened. The pencil case is installed either in the opening or next to the wall. From the outside, drywall is used to hide the structure, or the frame is decorated with wall panels.

The frame is made of solid wood, it is suitable for doors with a mass not exceeding 80 kg, as well as metal for canvases with a mass of more than 80 kg. The frame is purchased depending on the parameters of the door and the type of sliding system. In the opening, it is first carefully aligned, and then fixed on each side to the wall. The gaps between the pencil case and the wall are sealed with special foam.

When buying a pencil case, you need to find out from the seller what material the design is intended for.

Then you can mount the sliding system. The mounting scheme for any installation method is almost identical. The upper guide is attached either to the timber or to the brackets. Rollers are attached to the upper part of the leaf, their number depends on the width and weight of the door. The canvas with a roller mechanism is inserted into the profile and moves freely there along the entire length. The presence of the bottom rail depends on the design.

Mounting Features

After carrying out all the necessary measures, you can proceed with the installation of the sliding door.

To fix the upper guide, a beam with a section of 50x70 mm is most often used. A profile of identical length is attached to it using self-tapping screws. There must be at least three of them. Now you can install the beam according to the marks on the wall, having previously corrected its position using the level.

If you want to attach the beam to a concrete wall, then you will need to first install the dowels. Marks for their placement are made using a drill, after attaching a beam to the wall for this process. According to the marks obtained, we drill holes with the appropriate diameter and insert dowels into them. Now you can attach the beam to the wall.

Let's start preparing the door leaf. To do this, we install a roller mechanism in the upper part. The fastening of the system begins with platforms, which are most often installed on the sides of the canvas immediately from the corner. We fasten the platforms to the canvas with the help of self-tapping screws and insert plates with pins into them, on which there are special locking covers on the side. Roller platforms need to be screwed onto these pins.

Installing handles. In the finished canvas, as a rule, there are already holes. But if this is an ordinary canvas, then you will have to cut holes for this element with a chisel, after having circled the contour of the mortise handle.

The lower guide is installed if the system provides fastenings for the lower rollers. In order not to destroy the profile, you need to set the threshold, but you can set the guide flush with the floor.
