The technology of creating semi-antique furniture with your own hands, as well as diagrams and drawings. Elegant, antique furniture with your own hands The advantages of hand-made furniture products

Do you want to create a unique interior without extra costs?

Old furniture will help you with this, a photo of the alteration of which you can find with us. There are many ways to transform old, familiar items for you.

The choice of method depends on the purpose of the furniture and the type of coating, as well as its condition at the time of repair.

You can find a step-by-step photo-master class for making furniture with your own hands from old interior items on our website. The process of updating furniture includes two main stages:

  • repair;
  • decoration.

Let's take a closer look at what you should focus on.

Table repair

Tables are distinguished by their functionality into writing, dining, kitchen and coffee tables. Depending on their purpose, their structure also differs, and, consequently, the restoration process. As a rule, dining tables consist of 4 legs, a bow and a tabletop. They can be solid or folding. When altering such furniture, special attention should be paid to the condition of all elements, as well as their fastening. The legs should be the same, without damage. If necessary, they can be replaced.

The tabletop, in turn, is the main part of the table. Its surface should be smooth, free of grooves, cracks and corrosion. If necessary, wood putty can be used to achieve the desired effect. With its help, you can easily and quickly eliminate all surface imperfections. If necessary, it can also be used in the repair of legs. The same scheme is used in the repair of coffee tables.

Kitchen tables have their own characteristics. Before proceeding with the repair, it is necessary to conduct a complete inspection of this piece of furniture. An important role is played by the strength of the countertop. It must withstand heavy loads and physical impact. In this regard, the foundation on which it is installed must also be strong.

An example of using putty on wood, which will help fix all the bumps in the old countertop

Note! Kitchen tables are not only a place to work, but also used to store kitchen utensils. To do this, they have built-in drawers, shelves and doors. They should be given special attention.

If the table is equipped with shelves, then you should pay attention to their fasteners. If necessary, in a furniture store you can purchase special caps made of wood or plastic, and a thin, durable metal corner can also be used as a shelf mount. Pay attention to the condition of the canopies with which the door is attached. It is best to replace them with new ones, since with frequent use this part lends itself to the greatest wear.

The freshness of natural wood is given by special polishing agents that can be found in any hardware or furniture store.

If the table is equipped with drawers, then check how firmly their walls and bottom are connected. To facilitate their use, you can replace the fittings with which the drawers are pulled out. You can buy it at a furniture store. You can also purchase various types of comfortable handles.

Advice! When replacing canopies, choose those that are designed for furniture. They will provide more convenient and reliable operation of the doors.

When repairing a desk, you should pay attention to all of the above. After watching a detailed master class on reworking old furniture with your own hands, you can repeat it yourself.

Repair of cabinets and bedside tables

Each house has furniture that is designed for storage. As a rule, these are different types and sizes of cabinets and cabinets. They can be different in height, depth, spaciousness. Moreover, each of them can become a real decoration of your apartment. To do this, see how to restore old furniture with your own hands further.

A rather extravagant and extraordinary element of the interior - a bedside table from an old suitcase

First of all, it is worth inspecting all the fastenings of the shelves and, if necessary, replace them with new ones. You can also replace the drawer mounts with more functional and modern ones.

Depending on the size, the methods of fastening the doors may vary. Sheds are used at cabinets and small cabinets. They wear out quickly, so when carrying out repairs, it is best to replace them with new ones.

If you are remodeling a large wardrobe and it has movable doors, then over time its fittings may also wear out. In a furniture store, you can find special fasteners for sliding wardrobe doors.

How impressive the restored old furniture looks in this case, see the photo below.

Chair repair

It is hard to imagine any home without chairs. Today it is so commonplace that few people pay attention to it. This can happen in two cases - either with the proper design of the chair as an interior item, or if it breaks. We will consider how to come from the second option to the first.

The option of restoring old chairs with vintage-style covers

The chair consists of three main elements:

  • legs;
  • seats;
  • backs.

All of them can fail sooner or later. If the legs are the cause of the breakage, then they must be firmly fixed, otherwise the use of the chair becomes dangerous. If the seat is broken, then it can be replaced by cutting out the appropriate piece from plywood or fiberboard. The same can be done with the back. Also, if desired, the chair can be made soft. To do this, soft foam-based upholstery must be attached to the seat and backrest.

Advice! If you decide to install or replace the upholstery on a chair, it is best to use fabric stitched to the foam. You can find one in a textile store, and it is worth fixing it with a construction stapler.

Old furniture: photo design options using painting

As you know, any piece of furniture should be not only functional, but also attractive. Therefore, when old furniture is updated, the photo of which you can see below, it is necessary to break the work into several stages. The first step is surface preparation.

It is necessary to clean the furniture from traces of old paint, varnish, as well as dirt. After that, it is necessary to putty the cracks, if any, and then apply a primer. Next, you can apply the foundation. To do this, you need to choose the paint of the appropriate color.

New life of the frame of an old bed made of natural wood - painting in delicate turquoise

Advice! It is best to use water-based acrylic paint. It does not contain toxic substances, does not emit a strong odor and dries quickly. This gives the surface a glossy finish. But if you are good at using an aerosol can, then it will do.

decoration

Restoration of old furniture, photos of which are presented below, includes decor. You can use different techniques and combine them. The most common is decoupage. For this you will need the following:

  • the desired image printed on paper;
  • PVA glue;
  • brush for glue;
  • varnish, preferably water-based acrylic;
  • brush for applying varnish.

Decoupage is a fascinating activity, and furniture made using this technique looks very gentle and unusual.

Advice! It is best to use large colored napkins with appropriate motifs as an image.

Lubricate the surface with glue, gently attach and smooth the picture. Let everything dry a little, then open it with varnish. It is worth noting that there is no doubt about the effectiveness of using this method during the restoration of old furniture with your own hands.

Another no less interesting method of decorating is applying patterns using lace. For this you will need:

  • lace;
  • paint of the corresponding color;
  • scotch.

Take a piece of lace and attach it to the place you plan to decorate. Secure the ends with tape. It is advisable to cover the rest of the area with paper or film. Apply paint with a brush or use aerosol cans. Let the product dry. Remove tape, paper and lace.

Advice! If you want to decorate a large area, then it is best to use a piece of guipure of the appropriate size.

Both of the above methods are quite effective. Instead of lace and guipure, you can use paper templates. As a rule, often when decoupage and restoration of old furniture, wallpaper left after repair is used.

Padding of upholstered furniture

Over time, the upholstery of sofas and armchairs not only loses its attractive appearance, but can also sag a lot, become not as soft as before. But if you don’t want to throw away your favorite piece of furniture or don’t have the money to buy a new one, you can do the upholstery at home.

Refurbished shabby chic dining room

A detailed master class on how to remake furniture with your own hands, and photo examples are presented on our website. You need to purchase the appropriate fabric from which the new upholstery will be made. It could be:

  • barakan;
  • velours;
  • leatherette;
  • crepe;
  • alcantara;
  • leather, etc.

The choice of material for upholstery depends on your financial capabilities. You can buy it both in a textile and in a specialized furniture store. You will also need a construction stapler and staples for it.

It is best to get rid of old upholstery. It can be fixed with glue. In this case, you will need a construction knife or (if stapler brackets are attached) you will need to use a flathead screwdriver. After removing the old cover, begin to install a new one.

A small master class on replacing the upholstery of an old pouffe

Cut off the necessary piece of upholstery, attach it so that the edges go to the place where the old one ends, and attach with a stapler. You can carry out such manipulations both with the soft part, and with the back and the former.

If upholstered furniture has lost its volume and softness, they can be returned by replacing the foam rubber. It is necessary to fix it with the help of special small carnations. If you are afraid that such manipulations are beyond your power, then you can stick foam rubber over the old upholstery and fit it with a new one. But it should be borne in mind that the furniture should not lose its functionality.

We give new volume to the seat of an old chair

You can give any volume to your product. To do this, you need to choose foam rubber of the appropriate thickness. If there is a folding mechanism, then after the constriction it should function as before.

Advice! If you need to replace the upholstery and renew its volume, it is advisable to use fabric stitched to the foam. You can purchase it at a specialized store or stitch both materials yourself.

Upholstered furniture upholstery decoration

If you change both layers of upholstery, you can apply different types of decoration options that will give your furniture a more aesthetic look. There are many ways to do this. We will look at the two most common:

  1. The fabric used for the upholstery can be sewn on with patterned seams. This will create a special decorative effect.
  2. Purchase buttons or textile clips and use them to tighten the fabric and foam rubber, connecting them together.

Renovation of upholstered furniture with a cover

A more economical and easier way to hide stains is to sew covers. To do this, you can choose any fabric you like. It is important that it is durable. The most commonly used for this purpose are:

  • barakan;
  • velours;
  • velvet;
  • jeans
  • coarse calico;
  • other.

After taking measurements according to the size of the sofa, you can sew a cover that will cover the back, seat and, if necessary, the former of your sofa.

A small master class on sewing a removable cover for a pouffe

When making a cover, you can use various decor techniques. You can place embroidery in a certain place. If desired, you can sew an application. To do this, fragments of the pattern are cut out of pieces of fabric and sewn to the base, forming a single picture.

You can also use the currently popular patchwork - the art of making products from patchwork. In this case, you can use pieces of old unnecessary things to make a cover.

We update the past with plywood

Scuffs, stains and even broken upholstery on the former can be hidden with a special lining. To make it you will need:

  • plywood;
  • small metal corners;
  • the smallest furniture screws.

You can cut plywood yourself or seek help from specialists where you will purchase it. You will need 5 pieces according to the size of your bull. The overlay should cover its outer, inner, back, front and top parts. After taking measurements, simply make 5 corresponding rectangles and fasten them from the inside of the structure using corners and self-tapping screws.

Further, it is enough just to put the design on the former. It can not only serve as a decor, but also be quite functional. You can use the overlay as a mini table. If necessary, apply paint or decorate it in any way convenient for you.

Advice! After making the plywood lining, sand it on both sides with sandpaper.

Vintage interiors are filled with life and atmosphere of the past. We have already told you what finishes and colors will help prepare the basis for vintage in the first part of the article:. However, the main elements in vintage style will be furniture and decor.

Vintage broadcasts an entire era, looking into neighboring ones, which is why it is so multifaceted and rarely exists in its pure form. There is a vintage that is very close to the classics, there is a modernist style, there are also simpler interpretations in a rustic style. As a result, furniture can be from completely different styles of past eras. It is impossible to name clear characteristics of such furniture: vintage is more a feeling of cozy, slightly shabby, but high-quality antiquity than a specific style.

Now it is fashionable to set a vintage mood for an industrial interior, it turns out something like an old loft. This style is characterized by furniture of simple shapes made of pipes, metal in combination with wood. Metal or wooden chairs with straight legs, a minimum of decorative elements, plain and coarse upholstery on upholstered furniture made of linen or leather. A decorative accent in vintage lofts is often lamps in the form of movie spotlights.

Furniture

The perfect furniture for a vintage interior - bought from antique shops, found at auctions, lofts and flea markets, real pieces from the 1880s-1980s and older items as accents. This pleasure is extremely expensive. If you are not a true collector, then it is better to buy stylizations or make old furniture with your own hands.

Furniture rarely comes from one set, this creates eclecticism. When choosing furnishings for rooms, be guided primarily by the uniqueness and appearance of each individual item, and secondarily, assemble them into a single whole in the mood you aspire to. The most characteristic vintage items are pot-bellied chests of drawers and dressing tables, chests, armchairs with long wooden legs, heavy leather armchairs and sofas, and wrought-iron beds.

Materials that perfectly convey the mood: wrinkled brown leather, a combination of black or copper metal with wood, gray or beige natural fabrics, burgundy velvet. The wood is mostly dark, but you can use light or mix shades of wood within the same interior.

Decor

There are really a lot of accessories in vintage interiors. They can hang all the walls and make all the shelves, but this will not seem redundant. Every item has a story to tell, so it's good to buy knick-knacks at flea markets or attic sales.

Black and white photographs or graphic illustrations, maps, mechanical clocks and mirrors in a variety of interesting frames are well suited to decorate the walls. Frames should be old and worn, but it is not necessary to match each other in color or shape.

All sorts of figurines, dishes, porcelain dolls, globes, candlesticks, vases and caskets will find their place on the shelves. Choose items according to the dictates of the soul, the main thing is that they look not new. Books in shabby covers play a very important role in vintage interiors. A good solution would be to create a false fireplace in the interior and use it as a shelf.

As a floor decoration, you can choose a floor lamp with a voluminous lampshade, a full-length mirror or a mannequin from a tailor's workshop. Stacked old suitcases can replace nightstands. More ideas on this topic: .

A characteristic image associated with vintage style will be a birdcage. It can serve its intended purpose or be a candlestick, a mirror or an interior object. How else can you adapt a birdcage, read.

Decorate the interior and fabrics: lace or knitted for an elegant style, tapestries, velvet and leather for a heavily aristocratic style, cotton and linen for a simplified one.

We analyze the differences between the two styles of the last century that have returned to fashion.

The basic principles of the embodiment of vintage style in a modern interior.

The owner of this apartment on the top floor of a small house in Madrid, Maria Lopez Montero, writes a blog about interior design. In the house where she lives with her husband and their two children, she tried to collect everything that attracts her in this area. The interior is modern, but full of treasures from yesteryear.

If you add sleight of hand and a little imagination to nostalgia for childhood, you get an elegant element of decor.

The original way to update the interior will be semi-antique furniture with your own hands, drawings and diagrams will help with this. Handmade is a very popular trend of recent years; unique technologies for creating vintage items have not bypassed the furniture industry. The future design needs to be carefully considered - whether it will be collapsible, what elements are to be decorated, since it depends on what tools will need to be used.

The second life of old furniture can change the overall perception of a boring interior. And you no longer need to think about what to do with old furniture. Many home craftsmen prefer to change antique furniture with their own hands, and drawings and diagrams will help measure all the necessary parameters and avoid mistakes in such an interesting business.

To start the process, you need to familiarize yourself with the tools that will be used in the work, as well as consider how to make the process as easy as possible. As a rule, tools are selected in order to solve a specific problem - how to age furniture. If you plan to create a whole interior on your own or decorate old furniture, then you should go to the store after preparing a list. The necessary equipment with which the repair of old furniture is carried out is presented in the table.

Beginner craftsmen most often have difficulty choosing an electric tool with which to aging furniture. In order not to waste money in vain, it is better to consult with a sales assistant.

Aging methods

Before you paint antique furniture at home, you need to familiarize yourself with all the available methods and techniques for how to age furniture with your own hands. It is worth noting that the process of working with modern furniture is no different from the methods of creating semi-antique furniture with your own hands. The main differences lie in the final result, namely the appearance, reminiscent of old, cracked objects. Before artificially aging furniture, you should carefully prepare. The most popular and popular methods are:

  1. Chemical surface treatment;
  2. Thermal impact;
  3. Mechanical restoration.

Chemical surface treatment

If pine is planned to be used as the main material, then chemical treatment with the help of special reagents will be the best choice. As a result of the reaction of the chemical and wood, the material cracks and the long-awaited effect of antiquity is obtained. However, aging furniture with your own hands at home is quite dangerous, because during work you have to come into contact with chemical reagents, measure them, and mix them. It is important to note that the substances necessary for work corrode the material, so it is important to protect the skin of the hands as much as possible.

thermal effect

As for heat treatment, when repairing old furniture with your own hands, you will not have to use reagents, but another danger appears - working with an open source of fire. To achieve the best result, a high temperature flame must be directed at the material. The most optimal tool will be a soldering iron or a special lamp. It is important to control the process so that the lamp burns out the layers of wood unevenly. Only in this way will an antique-decorated item be obtained. Soft layers take much less time as they burn out first. The hard surface remains slightly affected and the texture is uneven. Without fail, after the firing method, sandpaper is used to make the surface smooth. At the end, it is covered with a special varnish. As for transparency, you can choose the medium according to your own preferences.

Mechanical restoration

Thanks to mechanical processing, it is possible to simplify the manufacture of semi-antique furniture. If this is the first experience for the performer, then decorating old furniture with your own hands from the photo will be easier. Using a brush with metal bristles, you need to walk along the entire surface along the fibers. Thus, a soft layer of wood is removed to obtain an uneven texture. Further, as in the first case, emery and varnish are used to preserve the new look as long as possible.

Another popular technique for aging furniture at home, which is used quite often by craftsmen of various levels, is brushing. With it, you can do the aging of furniture in the Provence style with your own hands. The technology is used not only to transform furniture, but also to decorate the flooring, decorative beams and even the ceiling. It is worth paying attention to design projects in the old style. This furniture aging technique looks great in combination with indoor plants, so it is often used to transform country houses and open terraces.

Brushing is the removal of soft layers of wood with the help of special metal brushes, followed by painting the furniture in a dark shade of brown. The final treatment (especially if antique furniture is being restored) requires varnishing of wooden furniture, which provides protection against mechanical damage, moisture and other natural phenomena. This method can be used regardless of the dimensions of the furniture. Ideal for pine, larch, ash. It is important to note that the brushing method cannot be used on fruit woods such as pear or cherry because their wood does not have a pronounced texture.

Using this method, you can decorate old furniture with your own hands: chests of drawers, cabinets, beds and other attributes without severe damage to the structure of the material, since the impact involves the destruction of only the top layer of wood. If you plan to use brushing for large objects (Provence style furniture), then it is best to prepare a grinder or chisel to save time. To achieve a deeper effect, it is recommended to use several processing methods at once. So, brushing can be supplemented by the chemical action of special reagents or heat treatment.

It is easy to do the semi-antique dressing room with your own hands. You can add a twist to the living room - make a table out of old tires with your own hands or decorate the interior with designer antique furniture. However, it is worth remembering that such a style must fit into the main style, otherwise the whole concept will look ridiculous.

Preparatory work

Before you paint old furniture with your own hands, you must perform the following preparatory work:

  1. We clean up all the details. If remnants of the past coating are found on the tree, then they must be removed without fail. We dismantle small parts;
  2. Grinding. The paint will not lie flat on the surface if it is not first sanded, removing the bumps or swelling that have appeared over time. How to remove the remnants of the past decor, you can look at the available videos on the Internet;
  3. We remove dirt and accumulations of dust;
  4. We apply an antiseptic primer. It is necessary so that during the operation the tree does not begin to rot;
  5. If the furniture is in good condition and no chipped parts are found, then puttying is not needed. Otherwise, you need to putty chips with a special mixture for wood;
  6. We dry the cleaned and primed parts for several hours.

Work performance technology

There are several techniques that can transform old furniture and radically change the facade of the furniture wall and its appearance.

Crackle

The whole process is based on the use of a special varnish called "craquelure". This is a kind of substance through which artistic microcracks begin to appear on the surface. Lacquer is best used for processing wooden or glass objects. In order for antique furniture painting to be done correctly, it is important to follow the following instructions:

  1. On a previously prepared surface, we apply the first layer of paint - the base. When microcracks appear, they will acquire a shade of the base;
  2. Once the base is dry, you can apply craquelure. In this case, all strokes should be performed strictly in one direction;
  3. After drying, we apply a color scheme that acts as a finish coat. As a result of its use, long-awaited cracks appear;
  4. We cover the resulting effect with a fixing varnish for furniture.

This method is perfect for those masters who seek to return their own country or Provence style. Making aged furniture using this technique will take very little time.

Patina

Over the years, streaks of a greenish-bronze color appear on the furniture, which indicates the “old age” of the object. This is patina. It is the result of high humidity or exposure to high rainfall. To achieve an illusory effect, you must take the following steps:

  1. We varnish the tree. It is recommended to use a special mixture that will protect the furniture from harmful external influences and extend its service life;
  2. We wait until the mixture completely hardens, and apply a patina to the surface;
  3. After a half-hour rest, you can start working with a metal brush. It is important to note that the greater the effort, the brighter the effect becomes;
  4. With the help of rags, we eliminate by-products of work in the form of dust;
  5. As in the first method, we complete the work with furniture varnish.

The main advantage of this technique is the lack of need for additional care. In addition, patina is quite easy to use with your own hands at home.

Coloring

The main work is carried out with several colors. To achieve the antique effect, follow the instructions below:

  1. To create the effect of clumsiness and shabby, it is necessary to inflict small mechanical damage. Thus, artificial aging of furniture is obtained, for example, the effect of old Soviet furniture, because it cannot be in perfect condition;
  2. We apply paint in such a way as to preserve the texture of the material;
  3. We pass along the surface with sandpaper to form spectacular scuffs;
  4. We take paint of a different color, apply it with neat strokes and shade it.

Making cracks

We paint the surface

We process with sandpaper

Applying another coat of paint

Artificial pollution effect

Things tend to get dirty over time, covered with dust. To produce a similar effect, do the following:

  1. Optionally, wax is applied to some areas of the surface. Movements should be in the same direction, but with breaks. Next, we cover the object with varnish;
  2. If notches were found on the object, then the varnish will give them a darker shade, visually enhancing the effect of antiquity.

Any furniture, regardless of the material or decoration, requires proper care for a longer service life. It is worth paying attention to the following methods:

  1. We rub old furniture from chipboard with our own hands with mastic or wax. They contribute to the formation of protection against high humidity and repel water. Rub the compositions with a rag or soft sponge;
  2. In addition, acrylic or a special varnish with its content is perfect. It must be applied periodically to “update” the protection. You can glue the surface of the object with a mixture of acrylic and wax;
  3. With the accumulation of dust, the furniture loses its presentable appearance, so we wipe it periodically with an ordinary lint-free cloth.

We apply wax

We cover with varnish

Drawings and diagrams

A drawing or diagram is a prerequisite for creating high-quality and durable furniture made of chipboard or other semi-antique materials with your own hands. Therefore, in the process of its creation, it is important to make the following calculations:

  1. Dimensions of the whole product and the dimensions of each part;
  2. The amount of material that needs to be purchased for the project;
  3. The drawing necessarily depicts all the small components of the main structure, indicating the dimensions and points of their location;
  4. The drawing must display the product from all sides, be three-dimensional.

In addition to a schematic representation of future furniture, it is important to pay attention to the decoration, to make a sketch. If there is no experience in making furniture, it is recommended to start with a table, since it is the easiest to make. You can breathe life into old furniture without major changes, just with the help of decor.

In conclusion, I would like to note that on the Internet you can watch a special master class on how to age furniture with your own hands. In addition, there is a video on the network where you can see how furniture is being repaired from old boards, it is told how to change the facades of a furniture wall, sand a shelving shelf, ennoble them or simply repaint them. You can also find a number of tutorials on how to clean old furniture, such as removing stickers on furniture.

Fashionable furniture "antique" does not have to cost a lot of money

With simple skills, each of us can create beautiful and stylish vintage interior items with our own hands.

Today, in many furniture stores, you can find tables, classic wardrobes, sofas and chests of drawers declared the latest trend, freshly brought from the factory, but looking as if they had stood for several decades in a cozy grandmother's living room.

“Recently, such pieces of furniture have become extremely popular. Many lovers of stylish residential decor give preference to these peeling corners and chipped edges, scratches and faded paint, as they give the apartment a special charm and individual originality,” says Alexander Yakovenko, a leading specialist in decorating houses and apartments in one of the elite Moscow furniture studio.

But why spend money on new expensive furniture? Perhaps each of us, looking around in our room, will be able to find a cabinet hung with a tablecloth and a few nondescript chairs, which all the household has long ceased to pay attention to. However, a few simple manipulations - and these objects, artificially "aged" and at the same time ennobled, can become the most fashionable and attention-grabbing elements of the decor of the room.

Discreet charm of patina

In order to achieve the so-called antique effect and properly age the furniture, manufacturers or restorers working with interior items made of wood usually use patina - a special solution that today anyone can purchase in a specialized store or order online. The cost of one liter jar of antique patina on the Moscow market today is about 2,000 rubles. There are also more budgetary means for the noble aging of the products of modern furniture factories: lime, glaze and varnish with a cracked pattern. “When using a patina, the wood becomes darker,” explains Alexander Yakovenko. - At the same time, the typical structure of wood remains visible, and the outlines of annual rings become clearer. All this gives the furniture a noble, antique look. .

Stain - and no magic!

Often, at home, to create vintage furniture, another, relatively inexpensive, but very effective tool is used - wood stain, a special impregnation that is applied to wood products in order to change the color of the latter. High-quality stain also has protective properties, which allows the tree to retain its attractive appearance longer and not be destroyed. This impregnation, as it were, is fused into the structure of the tree, preserving its pattern and surface properties. Shades of stains are usually made to match the color of natural wood, ranging from the palest pine to dark mahogany. Thus, thanks to the stain, old furniture made of cheap wood can be presented as a product from valuable species.

Stain can be purchased as a ready-made liquid or powdered product, which must be dissolved in hot water and used immediately after cooling. When working with stain, in no case should metal containers and objects be used, since due to contact with metal, the impregnation may lose its coloring properties. It is best to use plastic or ceramic containers. There should also be no metal clips on the brush.
To achieve the desired effect, the impregnation distributed over the entire surface of the piece of furniture must penetrate deep into the wood layer. Therefore, this surface should be treated in advance, removing dust, dirt and adhering grease from it. Softwood furniture is usually treated with alkali. Care must be taken to ensure that there are no stains on the surface, especially hard-to-remove traces of ink (in this case, the impregnation will lie unevenly). The stain is usually applied with a brush or brush, and the excess liquid is then removed with a sponge.

Work with a protective coating of wooden furniture. All dirt and grease must be removed from the surface before staining.
Photo from nmit.edu.au

When the impregnation dries, the wood fibers begin to swell, appearing on the surface. To smooth them out, you need to stock up on paper sandpaper or fleece. It should be remembered that stain is not a protective agent for wood. If you want your fashionable furniture to last for many years to come, its surface must be covered with a transparent varnish.

Dough, paint and glaze

In order to make the paint on the most ordinary furniture seem “old”, the pores of the wood are filled with lime paste, which is made on a wax basis. It can be bought ready-made in the most ordinary hardware store. Today the most popular are white and pastel colors. Lime paste can only be used when working with furniture made of solid wood (if it is not sheathed with plywood). First you need to open the pores of the wood surface. This is done with a simple copper wire brush. The lime paste is then rubbed into the pores with a coarse linen cloth. When it hardens, the surface should be thoroughly wiped to remove excess white bloom. Additional wood protection is not required: it is provided by the wax contained in the dough.

A similar antique effect is given by white paint, designed to work with interior details, and glaze applied in a thin layer on furniture. From 20 to 30 percent of water by volume is added to the interior paint and applied to the surface of the wood with a sponge. The furniture is carefully dried and then covered with a thin layer of glaze that has a shade of chestnut or mahogany. The white paint seeps through the lacquer, giving the piece a treasured vintage look.

Stylish lacquer cracks

Lacquer with a cracked pattern, which is the most affordable among all “aging” products, will make it easy to imitate noble dents that appear on furniture over time. Experts recommend that you first try to apply this remedy on a separate board in order to evaluate the result. In principle, this aging method is used, as a rule, only for small areas of furniture. First, the wood surfaces are coated with a conventional priming varnish. Only after it dries, you should pick up a jar with a special solution, matched close to the color scheme of the object being processed. Gradually, a cracked pattern will begin to show through, and you will get the desired effect of the old paint.

The transformation of old furniture into trendy vintage interior items, like any creative work, requires not only a flight of fancy, but also a serious approach to business. You will certainly have to stock up on all the necessary tools and a lot of patience, but as they say, nothing is more valuable than things made with love by one's own hands.

Do you like retro items, but the prices in stores are not encouraging at all? Learn how to make vintage with your own hands - update furniture or create elegant decor. And we will teach you how easy it is to do it.

In this master class you will learn:

  • 4 ways to turn the most ordinary wardrobe, stool or chest of drawers into vintage furniture;
  • 6 easy ways to add a retro touch to the little things you already have in your home.

So let's start.

1. Wardrobe with French "windows".

Do you have an old shabby cabinet with glass inserts on the doors? Before you send it to the country, remember that it is these things that are especially appreciated by vintage fans. Update it in just a couple of minutes with the help of elegant fabric applications.

Making such a closet is easy. The most difficult thing here is to choose the fabric in the right style. You can choose solid colors, floral patterns or, as the author, a pastoral scene in the style of "zhuyi".

Measure pieces of fabric along the width of the "window", and then stick them on double-sided tape. That's it, your handmade vintage-style locker is ready!

2. Graceful retro stool.

This piece of furniture is in almost every home. The stool is pretty worn out, but is it still fit to sit on? Amazing! For a vintage item, this is an excellent base.

First of all, sand the wood and then coat it with a dark gray primer. When dry, apply a second coat - white. After drying, carefully rub it with sandpaper until the gray starts to show through.

Then make a seat out of foam rubber and a suitable fabric, fix it and get a graceful piece of furniture with retro touches.

3. Chest of drawers with patina.

Do you have an old wooden chest of drawers? Excellent! Even if his condition leaves much to be desired, or the color does not suit him, it does not matter. On the contrary, this is a chance to turn it into elegant vintage furniture - much cheaper than in salons. A couple of simple steps, and this chest of drawers will become your favorite.

Sand the surface of the chest of drawers with sandpaper, then apply blue acrylic paint (pink, but muted tones will do) and wait for it to dry. Scrub some areas with a sponge to make the paint appear uneven, sand with sandpaper to show through the wood.

It remains to screw the handles (by the way, they do not have to be the same) - and admire the exclusive handmade item.

For more on that, see our selection of master classes on this topic.

4. Wardrobe with vintage draperies.

An old wardrobe with glass doors can also be turned into retro furniture. You will need a piece of cotton with a floral or checkered pattern, the length of the fabric is equal to the height of the doors, the width is approximately 4 widths of the glass insert per 1 door.

Cut the fabric into 2 pieces, tuck the edges at the top and bottom, then sew, leaving room for the line to thread through. Thread a fishing line (or elastic band) inside, drape (gather about one to two). Repeat this with the bottom. Make a loop from each free end of the fishing line.

Remove glass. On the back of the doors, attach furniture studs (4 for each door) so that the hat protrudes a little. Put on ready-made draperies, clinging to the studs with eyelets.

What else can be decorated in this way? More than 60 photo ideas for inspiration - (in our special issue on this topic).

5. Vase in a knitted case.

If you know how to knit, you can easily make such a pretty decoration for an ordinary glass vase. If not, sew a knitted cover from an old openwork jumper, you can even make it for a child. It looks especially impressive if the product is knitted from cotton.

For one vase, you only need one sleeve (the second can be used for another vase, including painting it in a different color). If there is a cuff, it must be cut off, trying not to dissolve the sleeve itself.

Cut off the sleeve a little longer than the height of the vase, remove any cut threads and finish the top edge so that the canvas does not unravel. Dissolve the threads from the rest of the sleeve and twist about a dozen flagella from them with a knot at the end. Sew the finished flagella to the upper edge of the cover and put the cover on the vase.

If you want to up the retro charm, find a white jumper and color the finished case with tea, coffee or cocoa. You get a delightful, truly vintage shade - "ecru" or "ash pink".

6. Charming tray for romantics.

Surely you have seen movie characters who have everything “in style” - even a simple tray. What are you worse? You can also make such an accessory - and, believe me, it is very simple. All you need is a small metal tray.

Find a suitable vintage picture, print on plain paper. Or select any photo, and then in a graphic editor like Photoshop, turn it into grayscale or sepia mode, and then print it.

Attach a tray, circle, cut, glue - and admire! Ideal for storing beads and pendants, as well as your favorite perfume - on the dressing table.

If you want to use this serving tray, varnish the picture.

7. Vintage jewelry display.

Making such a bijou holder is also easy. You will need a wide wooden frame for the picture (old or new), a piece of plywood the size of the frame (for internal insertion) and the remains of wallpaper with floral motifs.

The frame can be pre-painted in a dark saturated color (blue, green, burgundy, eggplant), and then go over the paint a little with sandpaper to give a “bloom of time”.

Stick the wallpaper on the plywood and reinforce the finished part on the back of the frame. On the outside, mark several points for hooks (in rows or randomly). Fasten small hooks or furniture studs so that they hold tightly to the plywood.

Hang up your decorations and place the display on a chest of drawers (or hang it on the wall with a picture holder).

8. Plate with a vintage rose.

You will need a simple white plate without a pattern (porcelain, ceramics) and paints for table glass-porcelain in the form of felt-tip pens.

Draw sketchy lines depicting a rose with a stem. Do not worry about the lack of artist talents - in this case, just such a slightly “naive” look is valued (as in children's drawings).

Important: even if earlier this plate was suitable for use in the microwave, now (after drawing the pattern) it cannot be placed there.

9. Candlestick from an egg stand.

And here you don't have to do anything at all. It is enough to find in a buffet (or at a flea market) an egg stand made of silver, glass or painted porcelain.

Turn it over, insert a tall candle, place the composition on a beautiful tray - and enjoy the serving detail in retro style.

10. "Blossoming" watering can-vase.

Take a metal watering can as a basis and paint it white. And then glue flower napkins on the sides and spout of the watering can.

Any flowers are suitable for vintage style, but spring ones are best: lilacs, tulips, lilies of the valley. From above, it is desirable to fix the drawing with a transparent varnish.

Important: this decor will not last long in the open air, so use the watering can only for watering indoor plants or as a flower vase.
