Wallpapering outside corners. How to glue different types of wallpaper: gluing in the corners of the room

Pasting the walls with wallpaper is not a difficult task if the work is done on a prepared flat surface. But often there are difficulties with gluing the material to the inner and outer corners. In order to avoid common mistakes, you need to become more familiar with the technology of the process of how to glue wallpaper and prepare the necessary tools for quick work.

Necessary materials

Often, before pasting the walls with wallpaper, preliminary surface preparation is required.

After preparation, the wall should be covered with putty (read how to choose a putty) followed by sanding (read how to properly sand the walls). If the wall is already prepared, then the materials for rough work will not be required.

You only need to have:

  • Wallpaper.
  • Glue.
  • Primer.

Main material - wallpaper, it is recommended to purchase not very dense, so that it is easy to glue. This is especially important when pasting corners. Before buying wallpaper, you need to calculate their number. To do this, the perimeter of the room is determined, the perimeters of window and door openings are taken away and a small margin (5-10%) is added.

When choosing glue you need to be guided by the type of wallpaper. Therefore, at the time of their acquisition, you must immediately take the appropriate adhesive. Primer required to ensure adhesion of the surface to the wallpaper.

Instruments

From the materials you need to acquire:

  • Pencil.
  • Metal ruler.
  • Roulette.
  • Paint knife.
  • Plumb.
  • Sponge.
  • By brush.
  • brush.

Where to start

After preparing the surface (cleaning with a brush from dust and coating with a primer), you can proceed to pasting the walls.

Pasting begins with the part of the room that is the most viewed. To do this, using a plumb line, you need to make appropriate marks on the wall so that the canvases are strictly perpendicular to the floor. Then the distance from the ceiling to the floor is measured and pieces of wallpaper of the desired length are cut with a small margin.

The first canvas can not be glued from the corner.

You need to retreat a small distance (half the width of the wallpaper). Then paste the wallpaper on the entire wall.

Depending on the type of wallpaper, the methods of applying glue also differ. Some types provide for the application of an adhesive to the wallpaper, which must be absorbed within 5 minutes. After that, you can stick the canvas on the wall previously covered with glue. But other types of wallpaper should be glued dry, and only the wall is smeared with glue.

External and internal corners should be glued last.

Internal corners

Pasting the inner corner on 2 converging walls is carried out using the following technology:

  • The distance is measured from the corner to the glued strip on one wall, then on the other.
  • Pieces are cut off, the width of which has a margin of 2 cm.
  • 1 piece of canvas is carefully smeared with glue.
  • Glue is applied to the inner corner.
  • The first canvas is pasted.
  • The remaining strip is glued to the second wall.
  • Wallpaper is trimmed.

When sticking the first strip on one wall of the corner, you need to ensure that one side of the strip is butt-to-wall with the wallpaper that was previously pasted to the entire wall.

While applying the canvas, you need to carefully expel the air from under it. To do this, use a soft sponge to make smoothing movements from the center to the edge, moving from top to bottom.

The first strip for the corner is glued in such a way that it extends 2 cm onto the 2nd wall. The fabric is ironed well in the very corner so that there are also no air bubbles left.

After that, the 2nd strip is glued to the 2nd wall. It is glued in the same way as the 1st one and overlaps the already glued strip by 2 cm.

After that, you need to trim the excess wallpaper. First of all, the wallpaper is cut at the top near the ceiling. To do this, a long spatula is attached to the wallpaper at an angle to the ceiling and a strip is drawn along it with a sharp construction knife. After that, the excess part of the wallpaper is removed.

Then the same spatula is attached with the end part to the first wall, which was glued, after which the spatula slightly turns towards the corner. Then a knife is taken, with which you need to make neat cuts on the 2nd piece of the canvas (it was glued to the 2nd wall).

It is necessary to make light movements with a construction knife in order to make an incision only on the upper canvas without damaging the lower one.

Such movements must be done from top to bottom. Lastly, the part of the wallpaper below is cut, which will be under the plinth.

But this was presented as a method of wallpapering on a corner in the case when wallpaper has already been glued on 2 adjacent walls. Therefore, it is necessary to adjust the wallpaper to the edge of the last strip on one side and the other. But you can perform another way: fitting only under one pasted wall.

The second way is as follows:

  • The first strip is glued at an angle end-to-end to the last strip.
  • The excess part is superimposed on the second wall. On the second wall, 2 cm are measured from the corner in several places, a vertical line is drawn.
  • With a construction knife, 2 parts of the canvas are cut off.
  • The same part is immediately applied to the overlap corner.
  • With the help of a spatula and a knife, excess parts of the wallpaper that go onto the first wall are removed.

After gluing the second part of the canvas, you need to ensure that there are no distortions. After all, the following strips will be glued to this strip end-to-end and skew may occur. Therefore, you need to constantly use a plumb line and a building level.

You can learn more about the process of gluing wallpaper on the inner corner in this video. The advice and recommendations of specialists on the implementation of each stage of work are presented.

External corners

The technology of wallpapering on external corners is also based on butt technology. In order for the outer corners to be ideal, you will need:

  • Glue the first strip, which with one edge will join the main canvas on the wall, and the other will go to the outer corner by 2 cm.
  • Flatten the canvas.
  • Glue the 2nd strip of wallpaper, which with one part will join the wallpaper of the 2nd wall, and with the other part will go to the first strip.
  • Carefully level the canvas.
  • Attach a long spatula to the glued 2nd canvas and cut off the excess with a construction knife.

Do not forget about the timely trimming of excess parts of the canvas from above and below. Often, when sticking the first canvas on the outer corner with its approach to the second wall, folds appear.

To avoid this, you can make cuts with scissors along the entire length of the canvas on that section of the wallpaper that goes to the corner.

This will allow the strip to lie as evenly as possible.

If the wallpaper needs to be glued to an arched structure, then the technology is slightly different from pasting the outer corners. First, strips are glued that go onto the inside of the arch by 2 cm. You need to immediately remove the extra parts of the entries. Then the width of the inner part of the arch is precisely measured, and a strip of the required length is cut out and glued. In this case, it is not necessary to cut the glued strip, because it was previously cut evenly.

How to glue wallpaper with a pattern in the corners. Step-by-step instruction

Working with plain wallpaper is much easier than with patterned wallpaper. But to enliven the room and get an unusual design, you will have to complicate the task and work with the selection of a picture.

To stick wallpaper with drawings on external or internal corners, you must adhere to the following technology:

  • Take measurements of the first strip, cut it off.
  • Measure 2 cm from the cut edge of the first strip and draw a thin line with a pencil. Bend the fabric along the marked line.
  • Do the same work with the second piece that will be glued (also make a margin of 2 cm and bend the canvas along the line).
  • You just need to first adjust the pattern, which will match in both canvases if they are bent along the lines.
  • Then glue 2 strips on converging or diverging walls.

When gluing wallpaper with a pattern, you need to most accurately match the pattern. Despite the fact that the corner is pasted over, all errors will be clearly visible.

To facilitate the work, you can follow the advice of professionals:

  • Buy wallpaper plain or with a small pattern. Due to this, you do not have to pick up a pattern at the corners for a long time.
  • Using wallpaper with a large relief pattern, you can hide minor wall irregularities (or prepare the wall in advance and level the walls with drywall).
  • For work, use only a sharp construction knife, otherwise it will be difficult to make an even cut on the canvas.
  • Be sure to apply the technology of wallpapering at an overlap angle. If the canvases are glued end-to-end, then over time they will disperse.
  • If, after gluing the canvas, excess glue passes through the joints, then it must be immediately removed with a clean cloth. It is not recommended to use a hard brush, which can damage the top layer of the material.
  • Carry out the work carefully, because some types of wallpaper are afraid of getting glue on them.

Everyone can master the technology of pasting corners with wallpaper. If you follow the instructions, be careful and take your time, you can easily stick wallpaper not only on internal and external corners, but also on arched structures and around window openings.

The most common beginner mistakes

First of all, let's look at how to glue wallpaper is not necessary. The most common mistakes newbies make are:

  • Poorly prepared surface. The level of complexity of pasting the joint of planes depends on their quality. If the apartment has crooked corners, then it will not be easy even for a specialist to complete the finish with high quality.
    Of course, it is not always possible to make the wall joints ideal, strictly at 90 degrees, but there should be no deviations from the vertical. Therefore, spare no time and effort to prepare the surface - putty the walls or even plaster;

Plaster corners will help to quickly and easily align the outer joints of the walls. During installation, they are leveled, after which they are glued with plaster or putty. The price of corners starts from 30 rubles per 2 meters.

  • Wallpaper cutting. As a result of such a decision, the edges of the canvases may diverge, or vice versa - unevenly overlap each other, respectively, the gluing looks messy. Therefore, according to the technology, it is necessary to provide a small inversion to the adjacent plane.

The exception is paper webs, which can be cut vertically. The only thing, in this case, you first need to stick a thin strip of wallpaper on the junction of the walls in case the joints diverge;

  • Big twist. If the joints of the walls are even, then such a mistake is not terrible, but in crooked corners a large inversion will cause the strip to deviate from the vertical. As a result, all subsequent canvases will be pasted crookedly;

  • The sheets are not fully glued. When gluing the canvas, many beginners do not push it all the way, as a result of which a small area located opposite the inner corner hangs in the air. This leads to the fact that over time the coating begins to peel off and even tear;
  • Glue applied poorly. If wallpaper is glued on a non-woven base, then the glue is applied to the surface of the walls, and not to the canvas. In this case, the mistake is to work with a roller, which does not always allow you to completely lubricate hard-to-reach places.

Beginners are often interested in - from what angle to start gluing wallpaper? If they are all even, then it does not matter where you start gluing. Otherwise, start gluing from an even angle to avoid warping the strips on the walls.

Sticking technology

As you know, there are two types of angles:

Each of their types requires its own approach when pasting, therefore, further, we will separately consider the process of gluing wallpaper on external and internal corners.

Internal

The sticker instructions are as follows:

Illustrations Description of actions

Surface preparation. Beginners often prime the walls with their own hands only with a roller, however, as in the case of glue, it is difficult to process corners with this tool. Therefore, after priming the walls, be sure to “walk” through hard-to-reach places with a brush.

Applying glue. If non-woven wallpaper is glued, as mentioned above, the glue is applied to the walls, not the canvas.

Gluing.
  • The canvas must be cut in width so that the twist on the adjacent wall is about one and a half centimeters. In uneven corners, the inversion can be increased up to 5 cm;

If you are gluing meter-long non-woven wallpaper, and you had to cut off a wide piece of the strip, you can start pasting the adjacent wall from it, if, of course, the pattern allows.

  • Then you should push the canvas with a spatula so that it fits snugly against the walls;
  • If folds appear, the edge must be cut across, i.e. towards the crease.

The strips on the adjacent wall must be overlapped with the edge. In this case, the canvas is aligned along the markup (vertical line), and not the edge itself.

This completes the sticker.

outdoor

Now consider how to stick this finishing material on the outer joints of the walls yourself:

Illustrations Description of actions

Surface preparation. As in the previous case, the surface must be primed and glue applied if the vinyl sheets are non-woven.
Bonding:
  • Position the strip so that it extends 30 centimeters onto the adjacent wall;
  • If the edge begins to wrinkle, cut it along so that the twist is no more than 5-10 mm.

If the wallpaper is patterned, with such a small twist, you may need to trim the edge of the second canvas to match the pattern.

Many people are interested - how to protect the wallpaper on the outer corners? For these purposes, there are special decorative corners that are glued on top of the finish.

Non-woven wallpaper is an excellent option for a finishing building material that combines practicality, convenience and beauty. In the process of sticking such wallpaper, special attention should be paid to how to glue non-woven wallpaper in the corners evenly. Pasting with such material has a number of features that must be considered when working. For example, in order to glue a non-woven decoration, a special adhesive based on non-woven fabric is used. Also, non-woven wallpaper does not require the application of glue to the canvas itself, in addition, this type of finishing material does not shrink during operation. Basically, their gluing is carried out end-to-end (with the exception of external ones).

Tools and materials

So, in order to glue the non-woven decoration, the following tools and materials are needed:

  • non-woven wallpaper;
  • special glue;
  • construction roulette;
  • building level;
  • simple pencil;
  • metal spatula 350 mm;
  • metal spatula 150 mm;
  • stitching roller;
  • containers for the preparation of glue, solutions;
  • cutting knife;
  • roller or brush for applying glue;
  • plastic spatula.

How to glue inner corners with non-woven wallpaper?

Scheme of the sequence of gluing non-woven wallpaper.

It should be noted that there is one optimal and correct way that tells you how to glue corners with non-woven wallpaper. Before pasting, the walls of the inner corner must be properly prepared: the old coating is removed, plastering work is carried out (if necessary), the walls are leveled, a primer is applied, etc. The adhesive must be prepared according to the instructions immediately before use.

In addition, the marking of the wall is necessarily done: with the help of a building level, a straight vertical line is marked from the edge of the inner joint at a distance equal to the width minus 1-1.5 cm. the distance from the joint to the rib with the addition of 1-1.5 cm. It should be noted that the best option is the method in which each side of the inner corner is pasted over with a separate panel. To do this, apply glue with a roller on the marked part of the wall. The area of application should correspond to the area of the canvas to be glued.

You should also apply an additional layer of glue with a brush along the very edge, along the upper border of the wall and below, directly at the baseboard.

The prepared canvas (with an allowance of 1-2 cm in length) is applied, starting from the top, to the wall treated with glue, and ironed with a construction spatula in the direction from top to bottom and from the center to the edges. Thus, the excess is removed. In this case, the left or right edge of the canvas (depending on which side is pasted over) coincides with the marking line applied earlier. The excess is removed in the following way: starting from above, close to the glued wall, a metal spatula 350 mm long (for even walls) or 150 mm long (for uneven walls) is applied, then the excess is removed with a cutting knife, while the knife blade moves along metal plane spatula.

It should be noted that the blade of the cutting knife must be sharp in order to avoid defects when removing residues. The second part of the internal joint is pasted in the same way. As a result, a junction of panels is obtained along the edge. Of course, if not a corner, but another landmark is chosen as the starting point for pasting, then it is possible to paste with a part of the canvas of the appropriate width with a deduction of 1-1.5 cm.

Trimming excess is carried out with a knife and spatula.

Joints on a horizontal surface after gluing are processed with a stitching roller.

How to glue the outer corners with non-woven wallpaper?

For gluing the outer corners, all of the above preparatory operations are carried out: leveling the walls, preparing glue, etc. It is preferable that there is exactly a whole canvas on the outer corner. This gluing option is suitable for even external joints, which must be glued taking into account the selection of the pattern.

If the whole canvas cannot be glued during the pasting of the room, then the outer corner is pasted over with a wallpaper panel so that the overlap is 1.5-2 cm. The other side is pasted over with a whole canvas, while the edge of the panel is glued to the edge. This option is most preferable if the material is intended for painting, which will hide pasting defects. However, this option is not suitable for wallpapers that need to be glued taking into account the selection of the pattern.

Often wallpaper materials are the most familiar wall decoration. Their popularity has increased due to the affordable price and ease of wrapping, but not in all places. Anyone can handle smooth surfaces, but in the question of how to properly glue wallpaper in the corners, not everyone can prove themselves as a professional. In order not to slow down the repair process and make it better, you will have to resort to some construction tricks.

Features of wallpapering in the corners of the room

Pasting a straight wall surface is not difficult, but as soon as you reach the turn, the hassle begins. How to glue wallpaper in the corners? Already experienced people in this matter recommend that beginners observe several conditions:

  1. Do not use the whole canvas on the turn. No matter how smooth it may seem, folds and distortions still turn out, because some modern wallpaper materials shrink after drying.
  2. Do not start pasting from the very junction of the walls - it is not as smooth as at first glance. It turns out that two panels are spoiled at once. Instead, you need to take a level and draw a vertical line.

There are 2 ways to glue wallpaper in the corner:

  1. Lay the sheets overlapping each other and make a cut in the center of the overlap. Remove cut pieces.
  2. Glue one panel, leading the edge 1.5-2 cm per turn, then butt him - the prepared second piece of material.

Wall preparation

Before gluing, you need to make preparatory work:

  1. Inspect the joints of the walls themselves for irregularities. They need to be leveled with putty, which will dry for a couple of hours. After that, smooth the surface with sandpaper to achieve perfect smoothness.
  2. Using a level with chalk, draw a straight vertical line, stepping back from the junction of the walls by 4-5 cm. There will be an edge of the canvas.

Step-by-step technique for doing work

To start pasting, you need to prepare the necessary materials - all of them should be at your fingertips. Wallpaper sticker in the corners requires the following:

  • wallpaper cloths of the desired length with a margin of a couple of cm;
  • glue diluted in warm water, suitable for the characteristics of your material;
  • roller and brush for applying glue;
  • dry cloth to wipe off excess adhesive;
  • brush for leveling panels;
  • ruler;
  • construction knife;
  • a stool to reach the top of the canvases.

How to glue inside corners

Here are the stages of work, how to glue paper wallpaper in the corners:

  1. Applying glue. Thoroughly coat the joint surface of the walls with the prepared composition from top to bottom, because there the material peels off easier and more often. Use where you get a roller, and where you need a brush.
  2. First part. On the side where the material is already pasted, glue the next part so that it falls around the turn by about 4-5 cm, as shown in the photo. Press the edge with a sponge. Press harder on the turning point to fix it more carefully.
  3. Second part. Proceed to another wall. Knowing the width of your material, measure it on the wall so that one edge of the panel extends 2-4 cm onto the previously glued one. Draw a line, checking it for verticality. After applying glue to the wall, glue the second canvas. Press the edges with a sponge.
  4. Trimming excess. Arm yourself with a ruler and a construction knife. Make a vertical cut in the center of the overlap using a ruler. Carefully tear off the top panel from the wall and remove the lower trimmed part.
  5. Final bonding. Thoroughly coat the part that was turned away with adhesive and re-glue it to the wall, smoothing the edge and removing excess glue. The perfect seam is ready!

How to glue outside corners

The protruding parts are more visible in the room, so they must be done especially carefully. There are two options for how to paste the wallpaper yourself:

  1. The protrusion is perfectly flat. Then just wrap the canvas around the corner joint by 3-4 cm and glue it. Do not cut it, and glue the next one using the usual technology for a straight surface.
  2. The walls are uneven. You'll have to use another method.

The second method will not differ from the technology for internal corner joints. Here's how to properly glue wallpaper in protruding corners:

  1. Glue the first strip with an overlap at the corner joint of about 4-5 cm.
  2. Measure the width of the panel from the ledge and step back another 5 mm so that when gluing one part runs a little over the other.
  3. Make a cut along the ruler in the middle of the overlap.
  4. The upper part will fall off by itself, and remove the lower part by pushing the top sheet and gluing it in place.

Such methods are assumed for those materials that are glued butt-to-butt and do not give shrinkage deformations. So the seam will not disperse and there will be no gaps in the wall. These methods are not suitable for paper materials - an overlay of 0.5 cm is required, therefore the first method is used when the overlap is not cut off, but simply checked for verticality with a plumb line. If deviations are found, draw a line and cut off the unnecessary. For a more aesthetic design, a wallpaper corner is often used.

Non-woven wallpaper is a wallpaper, which is used in the manufacture of non-woven cellulose material non-woven. Unlike paper counterparts, such wallpapers are perfectly washable, allow you to hide even fairly noticeable wall irregularities and retain an attractive appearance for a long time. Yes, and the process of gluing non-woven wallpaper is quite simple - the material is quite obedient, does not "pull" either horizontally or vertically, and practically does not give "bubbles". And even in such "problem" places. like external and internal corners, non-woven wallpaper is glued without any problems - for this, when gluing, it is enough to follow a few simple rules.

How to glue non-woven wallpaper on internal corners

The first thing to say about gluing non-woven wallpaper in the corners (both external and internal) is you can not try to paste over the corner with a solid canvas of wallpaper. In other words, do not try to cover both walls adjacent to the corner with one canvas. Otherwise, it is quite likely that the wallpaper will “lead” in the corner, and the resulting folds will be almost impossible to smooth out without trimming, which will certainly spoil the appearance of the wallpaper. But even if this does not happen, the curvature of the corner (and unfortunately most of the corners in our apartments are crooked) will affect the location of the canvas, and since the non-woven wallpaper is glued “butt”, all the following canvases will also have to be glued out of level.

The correct technology for gluing non-woven wallpaper on internal corners is as follows:

  • We measure the distance from the edge of the last glued canvas to the corner and add 5 centimeters to it. A panel of just this width will need to be prepared for sticking into the corner.

We measure the distance from the edge of the last glued canvas to the corner

Since the angle can be curved, it is better to measure the distance at three points: at the bottom, in the middle and at the top of the wall. For calculations, of course, you need to take the largest of the resulting values.

  • When the panel of the required width is ready, carefully coat the wall and corner with glue for non-woven wallpaper. Please note that when gluing non-woven wallpaper, glue is applied only to the walls.
  • After the canvas is pasted, very carefully, using a rubber roller or a dry cloth, smooth the wallpaper in the corner and on the next wall.

Using a rubber roller or a dry cloth, smooth the wallpaper in the corner and on the next wall.

If the wallpaper “wrinkles” in some places, you can make several horizontal cuts at a distance of 5-10 centimeters from each other.

Please note that this canvas must be glued "overlap" on the previous canvas.

  • When both canvases are glued, it remains with the help of a wallpaper cutter and a metal ruler of a paint spatula to make a “trimming of the seam”. You can learn more about the technology of "corner trimming" by watching the following video.

Video about corner trimming wallpaper

It is very important to cut through both wallpapers “in one go”, otherwise discrepancies in the cut line may appear.

In order for the cut to turn out even and the wallpaper under the knife “did not stretch”? you need to periodically break off the blunt tip of the wallpaper knife according to the marks specially applied to the blade.

  • After trimming, it remains to remove excess wallpaper. The top layer can be removed without problems, and the bottom layer can be removed by slightly unscrewing a small part of the top panel.

If you did everything correctly, then the panels form an almost imperceptible joint between themselves, which will remain carefully smoothed with a rubber roller.

Glue on outside corners

Outer or outer corners are not found in all rooms, but, nevertheless, they can be found quite often. The technology of sticking non-woven wallpaper on such corners practically does not differ from the method of pasting internal corners.

The technology of pasting the outer corner is almost the same as the method of pasting the inner corners.

First of all, we measure the distance to the corner from the extreme panel and prepare a new sheet of wallpaper in such a way that after the sticker they “turn” around the corner by no more than 5 centimeters. From the turning point closest to the corner, we measure the distance for gluing the next canvas (roll width minus 1 centimeter). We glue the canvas "overlap" on the resulting inversion, after which we trim the seam with a wallpaper knife and remove unnecessary parts of the wallpaper.

If the outer corner is fairly even (this can be determined using a plumb line), you can try to paste over it with “one canvas”. But keep in mind that the level difference in this case should not exceed 0.2-0.4 centimeters. Otherwise, it is better to glue non-woven wallpaper according to the technology described above.

As you can see, there is nothing complicated in pasting corners with non-woven wallpaper, so after a little practice you will be able to do this job perfectly. Good luck with your repair!
