Reliable passenger diesel car. Rating of the best diesel cars - saving without sacrificing dynamics

Many motorists cannot understand why a diesel car is more economical than a gasoline one. Especially at the current cost of gasoline and diesel, which are almost equal to each other. The whole secret lies in the efficiency of the diesel engine itself, which consumes a much smaller amount of fuel with an equal working volume. The difference in consumption can reach up to two times, which means. That at one gas station you can drive twice as much, especially since modern diesel units are comparable in technical parameters with gasoline ones.

Now, some may think about it. What's the point of buying cars with a gasoline engine? But even here, not everything is so smooth, initially, the diesel version of the car is somewhat more expensive than gasoline counterparts, and maintenance has to be done more often, which leads to more expensive car maintenance. Therefore, a diesel car will pay for itself only with high mileage and long-term use.

Peugeot 408

A car of this brand is equipped with a 1.6-liter diesel engine that produces up to 113 horsepower. Fuel consumption is declared 6.2 liters. At the same time, it accelerates to 100 km / h in 11 seconds, which is not a bad result at a cost of 1,100,000 rubles.

The sedan received a spacious interior and a good package, especially. According to the company, car maintenance will not be expensive. At the same time, the car was fully adapted to the operating conditions in Russian conditions.

Citroen C4

This is a car of the same auto concern PSA. What is Peugeot. Therefore, it is equipped with the same 1.6-liter diesel unit, but with reduced fuel consumption. In this car, consumption is reduced to an astonishing 4.4 liters, but acceleration to 100 km/h has increased by 0.2 seconds. The cost of the car starts from 780,000 rubles.

The sedan from Citroen has a stylish exterior, high-quality assembly and a good range of options. Also, a robotic automatic transmission is available in the configuration. But the declared fuel consumption in mixed mode is suspicious. If he is real. That is only in "greenhouse" conditions.

Opel Meriva

The car of the German automobile manufacturer, which is equipped with two variants of a diesel unit with a displacement of 1.7 liters, the declared power is 110 and 100 horsepower, and the fuel consumption is 6.4 liters. A six-speed manual or automatic transmission is installed in pair with the engines, while acceleration to “hundreds” takes 11.8 seconds.

The car has a comfortable and attractive interior, which can be complemented by various options. Also, an unusual for the modern world system of opening the rear doors is implemented - against the movement, which facilitates access to the salon. Unfortunately, Opel has left the automotive market in Russia, so only used cars are available for purchase.

Kia Soul

The car is equipped with a diesel engine with a volume of 1.6 liters and issuing 128 horsepower. At the same time, for 100 kilometers in mixed mode, the consumption is 7.4 liters. And the price tag starts from 820,000 rubles.

Kia Soul attracts attention with its extravagant exterior design, while it has a high-performance Korean-made diesel engine that competes with the best representatives of European manufacturers. The only negative is the unsuccessful design of the luggage compartment, which is not very convenient to use.

VolksWagen Golf

A popular representative of the German automotive industry, which has earned the love and recognition of consumers for its quality and reliability. At its disposal it has a diesel unit with a working volume of 2 liters and issuing 110 horsepower. A five-speed manual gearbox is installed in pair with the power unit. The declared consumption of diesel fuel is 6.4 liters per 100 kilometers. unfortunately, there is no information about the new generation diesel versions on the official website of the Russian division.

This is a reference car in its class that deserves attention. The diesel engine does not strike with power, but remains relevant to this day. Of the minuses. It can be noted the absence of an automatic transmission and the high cost of additional options. And also, the difficulty in finding a car in the secondary market.

Ford Focus

It can be called one of the most popular cars in Russia, but the diesel version is sold a little worse than the gasoline counterpart. The package includes a diesel unit with two liters of displacement and 140 horsepower. Acceleration to 100 km / h takes 9.5 seconds, and consumption does not exceed 6.8 liters in mixed mode. The price of a car in a diesel version was from 850,000 rubles, but the new generation does not have a diesel version.

The diesel-powered variant is one of the most dynamic vehicles in its price segment. Also, there is a choice of body type and many trim levels. This is a decent choice for a diesel car.

Hyundai i30 Wagon

A Korean car with a 1.6-liter diesel unit with 128 horsepower is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Claimed fuel consumption is 7.9 liters per 100 kilometers in mixed mode, and acceleration to “hundreds” takes 11.7 seconds. In the new line of cars, Russian dealers do not have a diesel version, but this is not a problem if you were going to buy a used car. At the time of sales, the cost of the diesel version started at 900,000 rubles.

A station wagon was equipped with a diesel unit, which is very logical for practical cars. Fuel economy with the practicality of the body - a guarantee of popularity in its segment of the automotive market.

Peugeot 3008

Not the cheapest car, which is a little out of the scope of the article, but it is impossible not to mention it. The price of a car in a diesel version starts from 1,600,000 rubles. The package includes a diesel unit with a displacement of 1.6 liters and 112 horsepower. At the same time, fuel consumption per 100 kilometers is 5.2 liters, and acceleration to 100 km / h takes 12.6 seconds.

The car is presented to the public as a crossover, but at its core is a compact van with the character of a crossover. It features a comfortable and spacious interior, with a large luggage compartment. The package includes a six-speed automatic transmission and a fairly stiff suspension.

Skoda Octavia Combi

Also. One of the most popular representatives of cars in its class, which is equipped with a diesel two-liter engine with 140 horsepower. In tandem with the engine, a six-speed automatic robotic gearbox is installed, which allows the station wagon to accelerate to 100 km / h in 8.3 seconds. At the same time, the consumption does not exceed 7.2 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers in mixed mode.

This car qualitatively differs from similar station wagons in good dynamics and high-quality and well-thought-out interior design. The car is equipped with the only option of an automatic DSG preselective gearbox. It also has a spacious luggage compartment of 580 liters, and the price starts from 1,650,000 rubles.

VolksWagen Touran

A representative of German compact vans who wants to be a crossover. It is equipped with a reliable diesel unit with a working volume of 2 liters and has a capacity of 110 horsepower. There is a variety in the choice of transmissions. Which is represented by a mechanical and robotic six-speed preselective gearbox. Claimed fuel consumption of 6.8 liters per hundred kilometers justifies the cost of the car. The price of the diesel version starts from 1,440,000 rubles.

Like most cars of the German manufacturer, the compact van from VolksWagen is distinguished by a well-thought-out interior and build quality. Also, there is a seven-seat equipment, which retains the convenience of using the interior, but deprives the car of the trunk.

Since 2016, the share of diesel vehicles on Russian roads has increased. If earlier trucks with such engines were bought, now sales of passenger cars have increased. Diesel engines are economical and have high power. Let's figure out which diesel cars are popular in Russia.

Advantages and disadvantages of a diesel engine

For passenger cars, compact versions of truck engines are made. Engineers have created a solution that allows you to increase power and reduce engine noise. Compared to gasoline, the advantages of diesel units are as follows:

  • higher efficiency - 36% of the fuel is converted into energy (for gasoline 26%);
  • low probability of spontaneous combustion;
  • fuel is more affordable;
  • fuel consumption is less by 25%;
  • exhaust gases are less toxic;
  • no ignition system;
  • high endurance of the motor;
  • the presence of a turbocharger that allows you to increase the power of the acceleration speed;
  • the fuel simultaneously acts as an oil, washing parts of the engine.

The diesel engine is water resistant. It helps to increase the vehicle's patency. With all these advantages, the unit cannot be called universal. Before choosing a car with such a motor, you need to consider the disadvantages:

  • low freezing point of diesel fuel;
  • noise when idling;
  • expensive parts and maintenance;
  • be sure to use a starter with high power;
  • it is important to fill in only high-quality fuel, without impurities
  • you need to warm up the combustion chamber;
  • the unit cannot be used at high speeds;
  • fuel is divided by season, in winter it is forbidden to use what is intended for summer;
  • problems with starting in severe frosts due to lack of compression.

Nevertheless, diesel-powered vehicles remain popular with consumers. The share of their sales has increased significantly.

Rating of the most popular cars

In the Russian market, new diesel vehicles are in the greatest demand. The AUTOSTAT agency analyzed their sales and compiled a list of the most popular models:

Experts have created their own rating. They call the best engines those developed by Ford. Even in the American market, Chrysler units have good characteristics. In Europe, the most reliable and dynamic engines are from Mercedes and BMW. The Asian market is represented by reliable engines from Toyota and Hyundai. Chinese manufacturers are already catching up with them, their units are the most inexpensive to maintain.

In our country, it is largely due to the stereotypes of Russian motorists, who, according to old memory, consider diesel engines noisy and difficult to maintain. In addition, there is an opinion that diesel fuel cars are not adapted to the cold climate of Mother Russia and may not start in cold weather, because diesel fuel is subject to freezing. Automakers, in turn, say that even a short test drive in a modern diesel car can easily destroy these outdated myths. “With the current level of engine technology, there are practically no shortcomings in diesel engines. Even in the cold season, there are no difficulties with the operation of a diesel engine, ”says Maxim Vinogradov, commercial director of Volvo Car Russia.

However, the poor quality of diesel fuel at Russian filling stations remains a problem for diesel car owners. Indeed, impurities in diesel fuel can disable expensive fuel equipment. In addition, there is a risk of refueling with summer diesel fuel during the demi-season period or during a sharp cold snap. However, these fears mostly concern the regions, while in large cities it is not difficult to find filling stations with high-quality diesel fuel today.

According to Ilya Nikonorov, head of the marketing and public relations department at MMS Rus, the situation with the quality of diesel fuel is changing for the better every year, as evidenced by the decrease in the number of warranty claims related to low-quality fuel.

The undeniable advantages of diesel engines over gasoline engines traditionally include more torque at low revs, lower fuel consumption, as well as the ability to travel a greater distance on one tank. However, even despite the fact that the cost of diesel fuel today is on average 7% lower than for gasoline, the benefit of buying a car running on heavy fuel is not obvious to most Russian motorists. After all, diesel cars themselves are usually more expensive than gasoline modifications, and savings from more modest fuel consumption can compensate for the difference in prices when buying, at best, by the end of the warranty period.

Overpayment or savings?

According to Vladimir Miroshnikov, Rolf Development Director, modern diesel engines are quite high-tech, and their production, as a rule, turns out to be more expensive than atmospheric gasoline engines of the same working volume. “From a technical point of view, the construction of diesel vehicles uses additional parts and materials, which in turn affects the difference in price compared to gasoline versions. For example, equipping a car with a special fuel pump and additional components for it, which allow distributing diesel fuel in more precise proportions, providing significant fuel savings,” explains Ilya Nikonorov.

By the way, in Europe, where diesel cars are especially popular, automakers initially include in the price part of the benefits from tax incentives. The fact is that in European countries the amount of tax on a car is tied to the level of harmful emissions, which is traditionally lower for diesel versions. In Russia, the maintenance of such cars is often more expensive, including due to a shorter service interval, as well as more expensive repairs of diesel engines.

According to the leading expert of Finam Management, Dmitry Baranov, our country does not have a developed system of incentives that would encourage consumers to purchase and operate diesel cars, because the question of the price of a car is decisive for the buyer.

In addition, in Europe, the cost of owning a diesel car is lower than a petrol car due to the higher cost of fuel. And in Russia, the purchase of a diesel engine is not economically justified on all models. “In Europe, average mileage is significantly higher than ours, car tourism is very developed, and for Europeans, the benefits of using diesel engines are more obvious. In Russia, with its relatively small average annual mileage, the economic effect of using diesel engines is lost,” says Vladimir Miroshnikov.

For heavy SUVs - heavy fuel

Share of diesel car sales in Russia in 2006–2015 Data from the agency "Avtostat".

Share of diesel car sales in Russia in 2006–2015 Data from the agency "Avtostat".

Nevertheless, the share of diesel cars in the Russian market has been gradually growing in recent years - from 2% in 2006 to 7.6% in 2014. And last year, according to the agency "AUTOSTAT", it began to decline, amounting to 7.2%. The fact is that the vast majority of models running on heavy fuel are imported to our country, and in the conditions of a weak ruble, their cost has become even less attractive compared to gasoline versions. At the same time, low demand for such cars in Russia is forcing automakers to stop selling them.

However, this does not apply to premium brands and the SUV segment, where diesel modifications are traditionally the most in demand. The leader in terms of the share of diesel versions in sales is Volvo - 82.1% in 2015. Such a high figure is provided, first of all, by the crossovers of the brand - XC60 and. According to Maxim Vinogradov, buyers of such cars want to get from the car not only increased cross-country ability and a high level of comfort, but also more traction (for example, during acceleration or in off-road conditions).

In second place in terms of the share of diesel modifications in the sales volume is Land Rover with an indicator of 74.5%. Range Rover Evoque, Discovery and Discovery Sport offer more diesel engines than petrol engines and are also more affordable. As noted in the press service of Jaguar Land Rover, in addition to greater traction and efficiency of diesel engines, savings on transport tax are no less important for buyers. For example, for a Range Rover Sport car, the available starting diesel engine is a 3.0-liter 249-horsepower engine, while the most affordable petrol modification is a version with a 3.0-liter 340-horsepower engine.

Diesel engines for cars are different, and it's not just the volume and number of cylinders, so let's try to briefly review the modern market and find out which of the engines are the most reliable.

To whom did the ratings give leadership?

Associations with the word "diesel" among a resident of Russia are always unambiguous: the smell of diesel fuel from a passenger bus, black smoke from a passing truck, vintage jeans and watches of the brand of the same name. Nevertheless, for most Europeans, the word derived from the name of a German inventor is synonymous with a reliable, inexpensive and powerful “heart” of a car. In our country, its popularity is not so high, apparently due to weather conditions and knowledge that diesel fuel thickens in the cold.

Reliability ratings, and especially for cars, are a thankless task. How many opinions, so many lists, in which the compiler simply expresses his view on a particular subject. That is why we want to draw your attention to the fact that the rating below does not claim to become an indisputable truth, but is just an attempt to systematize the data, knowledge and (partially) personal point of view of the compiler.

In search of an answer to the question of which diesel engine occupies a leading position in the configuration of passenger cars, you can see that some ratings call the best products from Mercedes and BMW concerns. However, the situation in the world of the automotive industry today is somewhat different, let's try to figure it out.

As the ratings of the world's major car dealerships show, the days when passenger car diesel engines were reduced copies of units installed on heavy trucks are a thing of the past. The well-known Volkswagen concern, which developed the 1.9 TDI engine, was especially successful in the production of such engines. To date, it ranks first and is considered the most balanced in terms of dynamics and power.

Thanks to the latest engineering solutions, in particular, an updated turbine and an increase in pressure in the combustion chambers, it was possible not only to achieve unique environmental performance, but also to reduce. Moreover, the power remained at the same level (90–120 hp). The newest cars in the Passat series are now equipped with the highest performance engine (BlueMotion package). Fuel consumption is 3.3 liters per 100 km.

Diesel winners of the car market

The second place is occupied by a modification of the engine with three turbines, owned by the German company BMW. The first time this unit was introduced a few years ago. It has 6 cylinders and, having a volume of 3.0 liters, is capable of developing a power of 381 hp. with. These engines are equipped with the latest cars of the 5 and 7 series, as well as heavy crossovers with the X5 and X6 indices. Convertibles with serial number 6 are equipped with a modification. True, it has two turbines, due to which the power is reduced to 313 hp. with.

Not so long ago, cars were presented to the court of potential buyers, whose engines have four turbines, and with a torque of 800 Nm, the power will be within 390–406 hp. with.

A car with a four-turbine engine

The third place in our rating was occupied by the American company of industrial diesel engines Cummins, which produced a super-powered engine commissioned by the well-known Dodge company. In fairness, it should be noted that overseas manufacturers did not pay too much attention to diesel engines, preferring to develop gasoline ones. However, the recent increasing demand for cars with units that consume diesel fuel has forced them to pay attention to the production of diesel engines.

The model proved to be quite powerful (240–275 hp), but in an attempt to occupy the “diesel” niche in the market, the Americans were cunning and passed off as their development by the Italian concern Fiat. The Maserati Ghibli was equipped with a model of such an engine, but due to the crisis, production was given to US industrialists.

This engine was recognized not only as the most environmentally friendly, but also the most innovative: in its production, metals used in the space industry and plasma fuel filters were used. The fact that the engine took only third place is a "merit" of a narrow focus. It is installed only on sports cars and Dodge Ram pickups. In terms of efficiency, it can give odds to its competitors: the consumption is only 8.5 liters per 100 kilometers.

Who is not far behind the top three?

The Koreans, who broke into the global automotive market 20 years ago, not only managed to take their rightful place on it, but also “move” the Japanese giants in the ranking. Having come a long way "from electric kettles to mining trucks", they also do not want to miss their benefits, which promises an increased demand for cars equipped with diesel engines.

As always, Asian manufacturers acted very cunningly: not wanting to overhaul production and compete with Europeans and Americans in the power of units, they managed to create a 1.7-liter engine that can produce 110–136 hp. with. Do not rush to wrinkle your nose contemptuously! With such rather modest (compared to products from other manufacturers) data, the Hyundai diesel engine has such an incredible torque that it is not inferior in dynamics to gasoline units with a capacity of 150–170 hp. with.

I must say that the Hyundai i40 car supplied to the European market is equipped with such a unit. In Korea, diesel engines have somehow not found wide application (or the wave of “fashion” has not yet reached there), and therefore they are still installed only on export cars. Recently, the same unit appeared on the crossover with the ix35 index, and now such popular cars as the Grandeur and Sonata are equipped with it. Fuel consumption, however, is more than that of competitors, but the Koreans do not seek to surprise anyone. Their mission is to deliver reliable workhorses capable of average fuel consumption, in this case 5.5 liters per 100 km.

Having “squeezed out” enough power from cars and won its cell on the market, the Japanese concern Toyota now makes no sense to prove something to anyone. The concept that manufacturers have thrown all their efforts into is ecology and economy while maintaining sufficient power. And they succeeded. Creating an engine for their compact car named Urban Cruiser, they thought that the residents of megacities would not only be convenient to move around the city, but also that a “calculator” would not turn on in their heads, calculating fuel costs.

One of the smallest diesel units to date is a 1.4 liter engine with a power of only 90 hp. with. This is the fifth place in our ranking. Such parameters, however, do not interfere with the creation of torque, which makes it easy to “pull” an all-wheel drive car. The consumption of diesel fuel, depending on the mode of travel, ranges from 4 to 6 liters per 100 km.

So which one is the most reliable?

Such a question is a bit naive, since this parameter depends on many factors, including driving style. But if you choose the best from the above list, then the reliability will be given to the Americans Cummins with a Dodge engine.

And it's not about power or fuel consumption per 100 km. Most likely, the materials used in production play a role. The cylinder block is made of high carbon cast iron, capable of withstanding not only high pressure, but also significant temperature conditions. And its pistons are made of a special aluminum alloy, which is used in the details of spacecraft. This means that they are able to withstand both long-term operation under extreme conditions, and a sharp increase in load when changing speeds.
