Features of the restoration of a wooden table

Even the highest quality furniture cannot last forever. Over time, the surface of the table loses its original appearance. Small cracks, chips appear on it, the varnish begins to wear off, and the fasteners no longer withstand the load. Restoration of an old table is a serious repair, which primarily involves updating damaged parts. At the same time, it is very important to understand that chipboard is almost beyond repair. It is better to simply throw away the old surface, and put a new one in its place.

Before updating the countertop, it is imperative to remove the old finishing coating. If it is a painted or varnished table, then the top layer should be washed off with alcohol, acetone, organic solvents. On sale there are also many special tools for these purposes. They are presented in the form of liquids, gels or powders.

If there are minor scratches or damage of a different nature on the wooden structure, they are carefully treated with sandpaper with a small grain size. Closing cracks in the repair of wooden tables is carried out using:

  • putties for wood;
  • mixtures of glue and wood shavings;
  • epoxy resin or special wax correctors.

In wide and deep cracks, you can insert rectangular pieces of suitable size or wedges of wood and fix it all with universal glue. The resulting gaps need to be hidden, for this they are filled with resin or putty. When doing such repairs, it is worth remembering an important rule - all surfaces must be dry. Wood is a very vulnerable material. It must be protected from moisture, bacteria, fungi, ultraviolet radiation. Therefore, it is necessary to take care of the protective layer (primer, paint, varnish or azure). Most often, varnish is used for these purposes. To change the shade of furniture, you need to cover it not with a transparent, but with a colored varnish. The result is a very stylish and presentable polished table.

The next step is to process the entire area of \u200b\u200bthe furniture with medium-sized sandpaper. Here you need to try and grind the table to a perfectly smooth state. How the paint or varnish will lay down will largely depend on the level of smoothness. Before varnishing the product, the wood is primed. To preserve the natural beauty and texture of wooden products, they are often coated with a special tinting liquid (stain) or water-based acrylic varnish.

During the restoration of the table with your own hands, the master requires care and caution. It is necessary to work with chemicals in a room with good ventilation, it is also advisable to do this in overalls and a respirator.

Necessary tools and consumables

Before updating the table, you need to stock up on the necessary tools and supplies, which are best taken care of in advance. To carry out the work, you may need the following inventory:

  • sandpaper of varying degrees of grit (from 80 to 180 for initial processing, from 500 to 600 for polishing the final coating) or a grinder;
  • a set of brushes and a roller;
  • an electric drill and several drills of different diameters;
  • chisel;
  • plane;
  • hammer, stock of nails and nail puller;
  • saw;
  • marker;
  • roulette;
  • rubber spatula to remove old paint;
  • putty, primer, varnish, paint;
  • glue for wood;
  • protective equipment: masks, gloves, respirator;
  • means for protecting wood (impregnation that protects against adverse factors, for example, wood decay or pests).

Also, a set of screwdrivers is useful for disassembling the product. With the help of a marker and a tape measure, marking will be carried out, and paints and varnishes will help protect the furniture from negative influences and change its appearance. When choosing a paint and varnish composition, it is better to give preference to a well-known brand. Before restoring an old table with your own hands, you need to make sure that the tools are intact and in working order.

Stages of work

The restoration process consists of several important steps:

  1. Selection and purchase of all necessary consumables. It is better to do all this in advance.
  2. Preliminary repair of the table. In the case of the restoration of the desk, moving parts are lubricated, drawers and shelves are repaired.
  3. Identification and elimination of major defects for further restoration.
  4. Removal of old varnish.
  5. Application of protective solutions.
  6. Surface decoration using various techniques.

The last step is the most interesting. It gives you the opportunity to realize your creative potential and bring the most creative ideas to life.

preliminary repair

At the preliminary stage of restoration, furniture is restored and repaired. Start by assessing her condition. You need to carefully examine the wooden table, see if the legs are broken, check the integrity of all the details. A stable structure should not tilt and creak under load. Table repair begins with a search for visible defects. Next, you need to disassemble it into its component parts. If the plywood that acts as the bottom in the boxes has delaminated, it must be dismantled and these parts replaced with new ones.

The presence of small bubbles on the surface of chipboard or MDF indicates that the veneer peeling process has begun.

Moving parts are lubricated with machine oil, if necessary, the mechanism itself is repaired. If corrosion has appeared on the metal parts, they must be replaced with new ones. Outdated unfashionable fittings can be changed to a more modern one.

Poorly fastened elements are connected with glue. To make the table more stable, it is necessary to replace its legs with wider ones. Not everyone knows how to restore a table if it is loosened. You can strengthen the product with corner ties.

To repair the table-book, it is necessary to lubricate all movable joints with machine oil.

Primary processing

Many are interested in how to update an old coffee table if there is a long-cracked layer of varnish on its surface. In this case, it is necessary to remove the old coating in order to apply a new one in its place. This work is carried out mechanically (manually using a spatula) or special chemical compounds are used, which are also called washes. The mechanical method involves the use of a grinding machine. But if it's not there, no big deal. You can replace it with medium-grain sandpaper. The main thing during machining is not to damage the product. This is especially true for old wood. To avoid this, the movements should be directed along the wood fibers.

The remains of the old coating can also be removed using chemicals. They are applied with a small soft brush to the surface of the furniture. Active substances quickly dissolve all existing layers of varnish or paint. After 30 minutes, this solution can be safely removed with an ordinary sponge. After removing the varnish, the wood is impregnated with protective mixtures. This is an extremely important stage in the restoration of a wooden table, which will subsequently protect the product from damage.

When choosing between mechanical and chemical methods, it is worth considering that when it comes to rare and expensive furniture, it is best to use a wash. It is commercially available as a liquid, gel, or powder. All these mixtures are absolutely safe and will not spoil the structure of the tree.

To remove small cracks, chips and scratches, the following operations must be carried out:

  1. Sweep dust out of all cracks.
  2. Fill cracks with wood putty.
  3. Remove excess putty and level the surface.
  4. Wait for complete drying and clean the treated areas with fine sandpaper.

These operations will help remove all defects from the surface of the table.

When restoring a coffee table with your own hands, sometimes you have to deal with the fact that there are depressions or even holes on its surface. In this case, you can use epoxy or fill the recesses with a mixture of fine sawdust and glue.

Coating with decorative composition

Before proceeding with the final finishing, it is necessary to carry out priming. You need to apply the composition in stages - first on the countertop, then on the frame of the product. In the work, you can use both acrylic and alkyd primers. Processing a table made of wood consists of several stages:

  1. The selected composition is applied to a clean surface and smeared with a spatula, the mixture should be distributed in an even layer.
  2. After the first layer has dried, a second layer must be applied.
  3. When all layers are dry, remove roughness by sanding.

In this way, you can cover not only tables. Any wooden surface (chairs, chests of drawers, cabinets) needs an additional primer coat before painting. After priming, it is necessary to paint. This can be simple brushing or decorative application of paint through a tulle or stencil. The last step will be varnishing or waxing. Often, varnish is used in the restoration of the kitchen table with your own hands. Wax is used mainly for furniture that is constantly under the influence of external factors. It perfectly protects from the sun, moisture and various damages.

When choosing tools for application, you need to remember that low-quality brushes can leave villi, which, after drying, will be impossible to remove.

The varnish is applied with a brush, the drying time is from 18 to 36 hours. Wax can be hard or watery. The liquid is immediately ready for use, and the solid must first be melted. Before updating the kitchen table with your own hands with a protective layer of wax, you need to prepare a dense brush or cotton swab. All these manipulations are desirable to be carried out in the open air, since the compositions used contain toxic substances that adversely affect health.

Quite often there is a need to mask minor visual defects or just want to change the boring color of the old table. To do this, before applying the varnish composition, you can cover the desired areas with paint.

Creative ways to upgrade

Many people are puzzled over how to update old tables that look bleak. There are many ways to decorate the countertop of a kitchen table or any other:

  1. Painting. Very easy restoration. Different types of paints are used, for example, acrylic, alkyd or enamel.
  2. Art painting. Quite a complicated way that requires drawing skills. You can use a stencil, it makes the task much easier.
  3. Craquelure. This method is a decoration by applying a finish that imitates an old cracked coating. This is done using special chemical mixtures.
  4. Mosaic. You can make it with smalt, but it is very expensive. It is better to use broken tiles. For gluing use universal glue.
  5. Decorative film. It is glued after polishing and cleaning the surface. With this technique, an old coffee table can be turned into a trendy piece of furniture.
  6. Pasting with decorative tape. After polishing and treatment with alcohol, adhesive tape is glued. Then the pasting place is rolled with a special roller.
  7. Processing with epoxy resin. This solution turns into plastic after application to the surface. With its help, decoration occurs with the addition of a variety of patterns.
  8. Applying varnish or stain. This is the easiest way to decorate, which even a beginner can handle. Moreover, it will preserve the natural texture of the wood flooring, as well as provide protection from moisture and fading. Most often, this method updates the old kitchen table.
  9. Painting through tulle. To do this, you need to find a piece of old tulle. Next, you need to paint the table white. After the paint has dried, apply tulle to the surface of the furniture in such a way that the arrangement of the pattern looks as beautiful as possible. Fix the fabric so that it does not move during painting. Then you need to take a can and start staining. After 15 minutes, the tulle can be removed.
  10. Gilding. With the help of a transfer sheet, you can achieve a beautiful gilded effect. This operation is carried out in the same way as staining, using a stencil.

To get the effect of a pleasant dull shine, a matting solution can be applied on top of the varnish.

In order to restore a coffee table with your own hands, it is best to use mosaic decoration, painting, burning or varnishing. To "revive" a faded desk, you can choose staining or varnishing. For the kitchen table, there are quite a few ways to decorate: dyeing through lace or tulle, decorating with ceramic tiles or using decoupage.

Garden tables are best decorated with tiles or mosaics, especially if they are outdoors. If you need to decorate a table for children's creativity, you can be creative and paint each leg in a different color - you get a bright and cheerful piece of furniture.

Summing up all the recommendations, it is safe to say that the restoration of outdated furniture can be done independently. Anyone who has ever held tools in their hands can turn an awkward, shabby table into a real work of art. Of course, this will take time and patience, but the result is worth it.

It is not uncommon for a favorite piece of furniture to lose its original appearance, and there is simply no financial means to buy a new one. In such cases, furniture restoration can help. Let's take a closer look at how to restore a table at home, what is important to consider and what stages should not be missed.

Ways

There are quite a few ways to restore furniture, ranging from a light “cosmetic” decor to a major alteration of the product. Restoring an old table with your own hands is not so difficult if it does not have any serious damage. In this case, it will be enough to sand and paint the old piece of furniture so that it shines in a whole new light.

Repairing glass tables at home can be more labor intensive and also a very costly process. If there is a breakage of the glass surface, it may be necessary not only to repair it, but also to buy a new one, since not all glass deformation can be eliminated by gluing and grinding.

The greatest scope for creativity opens up during the restoration of a wooden table. After all, various painting and patterning techniques, including the “decoupage” technique, are perfectly applied to solid wood furniture. It is worth noting that painting and various decorative techniques are most applicable to small tables. This can be used to finish, for example, a small desk or a compact coffee table. But for the restoration of the oak folding model, additional resources may be needed. Since the table has a large solid surface, it is quite acceptable to finish its parts with materials such as MDF and chipboard. Securely fastened and carefully crafted, they will not only give the table a new life, but also give a completely different appearance.

A plastic table can be restored using the same painting, but this can only be done if the piece of furniture does not have serious cracks. Plastic is a rather capricious material, and when exposed to high temperatures, the glued seam may not withstand, which will lead to a new breakdown.

Computer tables made of chipboard and laminated chipboard are often peeled off, which is why their appearance becomes sloppy and sloppy. To repair such models, special adhesive tapes and films imitating a wooden surface are suitable.

The kitchen table-book needs to be reconstructed as carefully as possible, using exclusively environmentally friendly and hypoallergenic materials. Since the countertop comes into contact with food quite often, care must be taken that the materials for finishing its surface are not toxic and unhealthy. The same applies to the children's table.

Restoration of a polished dining table can be done by grinding the surface and applying a new layer of decorative varnish to it. So the surface of the furniture attribute will again acquire a glossy sheen.

Sometimes it may be necessary to increase the height, for example, of a dressing table, in case of breakage of its legs. In this case, special allowances or new legs of the required size are constructed from wood material. To update any model, you can also use the classic hand-painted. This technique is also suitable for sliding tables that do not have any critical surface damage.

Materials and tools

The restoration process may require various materials and tools.

Let's take a closer look at their list and purpose:

  • To restore tables with a wooden surface, you will definitely need a grinding machine or coarse sandpaper. With these tools, you can make the surface smooth, removing all the roughness;
  • To give the surface a fresher look and a different color, you will need a completely ordinary paint. Finding out which variety you can paint the table is quite easy, since the scope is almost always described on the packaging of any manufacturer;
  • It is best to apply various patterns and ornaments with acrylic paint, since it is very resistant and will stay on the surface of the furniture for a long time.

To repair any individual parts of the table, you may need various construction tools:

  • For example, with a hammer, screws and simple nails, you can properly fix the legs of the table;
  • To fasten panels made of plastic and MDF, it will be necessary to acquire a special glue, which is also called liquid nails and is often used in repairs;
  • To work with wooden parts, you must have a small saw or jigsaw with you, with which you can cut the necessary part from a piece of wood.

It is impossible to lose sight of various small details, which greatly simplify the restoration process. So it’s better to have a large ruler or tape measure, a bright marker or pencil, construction tape, brushes to remove dust and sawdust, protective equipment and a damp cloth with you.

Step by step update process

Repairing a piece of furniture at home as a whole, in the form in which it is, is an almost impossible task, since many details need an individual approach. For example, it is better to remove the countertop during the finishing of the remaining parts in order to protect it from causing even more damage.

Self-restoration of even the smallest table can be a very time-consuming process if the approach is not correct, skipping important details and steps. It is for the timely implementation of each stage of work that it is necessary to draw up an action plan.

Damage Inspection

Before proceeding with the restoration, it is necessary to carefully examine the front of the upcoming work. Very often there are products with serious damage, which can not be dealt with only by means of a cosmetic finish. For example, if a table leg has fallen off, painting will not fix it.

The first step is to disassemble the table, if the model allows it., and carefully examine the surface of each part for serious damage. If there are none, you can proceed to further actions, depending on the intended restoration work.

If the surface of the parts has rather deep cuts, severe chips or serious damage, it will be necessary to take measures to eliminate them. In the event that damage cannot be simply repaired, it may be necessary to resort to replacing any part of the furniture attribute.

Only after a thorough examination and identification of all the "weak points" of a piece of furniture, you can draw up a further plan of action and proceed directly to the process of restoration work itself. Consistency is very important in this case.

Grinding

In any repair process, after determining the "front of work", the stage of cleaning and smoothing the surface follows. Restoration of tables is no exception and, regardless of their varieties, grinding of individual parts is an indispensable part of the whole process.

If there is no special device for grinding the surface at hand, you will need to use sandpaper. To remove the remnants of the old surface, you need a view with a coarse-grained surface.

If it is possible to use a belt machine for grinding surfaces, you should opt for it, as it will help speed up the process. But you should know that the machine is only suitable for processing spacious flat surfaces, and small parts still have to be processed manually.

If the coating is removed completely and it is only necessary to give the surface smoothness, fine-grained paper should be used. Thus, the roughness will be smoothed out without damaging the surface. In no case should you sand the surface across the fibers, since they are quite damaged and scratches of different depths form. Processing is carried out exclusively along the location of the fibers. It is also worth using a respirator or a special mask in order to avoid getting dust and small particles of wood into the respiratory tract.

putty

As mentioned earlier, in the presence of severe damage and deep scratches, it will be necessary to get rid of them. The simplest and most affordable way is putty. In addition, even the largest holes can be sealed with putty, so that replacement parts may no longer be a necessity.

It is necessary to use only special putty for wood, since the usual composition for other repairs will not work and will not stick to a wooden surface.

If the surface of the product has only shallow cracks, you can use the stain, and then apply several layers of protective varnish. In this way, the fibrous structure of the wood elements will be preserved and beautifully designed.

After applying the putty and before applying the final coating, the surface must be carefully primed and sanded again. The primer will help degrease parts of the furniture attribute, and re-sanding will smooth out the remaining irregularities.

Painting

The final and very important step that requires special attention is the surface painting process. It is important not only to choose the right paint, but also to carefully apply it without various formations, lumps, bumps and protect the freshly painted surface from the ingress of small particles of wool, dust and hairs.

Dark shades are best applied in several thin layers. So the paint will grab better, and the color will turn out to be more saturated.

To create the effect of antiquity and scuffs, the painted surface of the table will need to be sanded in certain places.

You should carefully select the shades and apply the paint very carefully, because if you are dissatisfied with your work, it will be quite difficult to repaint the table, you will have to re-do all the laborious work, starting from the surface grinding stage.

In order for the gloss to shine beautifully on the surface, the surface should be treated with a layer of varnish, and after it dries, with a protective layer. Most often, various polishing compounds are used to protect the surface of furniture, as well as wax mixtures, which, when rubbed into the surface of the table, will give it a glossy shine, protect it from dirt and large accumulations of dust.

You can see how to update the old table in the next video.

Finishing and decoration

After painting or during its process, if desired, you can additionally decorate the surface of the table, giving it a lighter, more casual and informal look. Consider the most common and beautiful ways to decorate restored tables.

Probably, almost every home has such a type of furniture as a coffee table or a desk. Such tables are very convenient, they can be placed in the living room, and in the bedroom, and in the nursery.

It is desirable that it fits into the overall interior. Therefore, if you have a modern renovation at home and the old coffee table does not fit the general look of the room, do not rush to throw it away. We invite you to show your imagination and repair the old table with your own hands. Moreover, the process is very exciting and you should not have any special difficulties.

We will describe the restoration process using an example made of natural wood and covered with furniture varnish.

For restoration, we decided to use the decoupage technique, since this is the most suitable for coffee tables and desks. As a result of applying the decoupage technique, you will receive an original thing at home, which none of your friends and acquaintances have anymore.

1. Any kind of restoration or repair begins with an inspection. We examine the table and determine the defects.

2. Next, we need to clean it from the old varnish coating. To do this, we need sanding paper of different grit numbers. It is very good if you have a grinder. It will help to grind the table much faster and better. It is better to grind along the fibers.

Sanding across the grain will leave scratches on the surface.

The grinding process is carried out in three stages. First you need to use a sandpaper with the highest grit. Then they take sandpaper of medium grit, and at the end all the remaining irregularities are sanded with a zero-grain sandpaper.

When sanding, it is better to wear a respirator because wood dust can damage the upper respiratory tract and lungs.

After sanding, wipe the table with a damp cloth to remove any remaining dust.

3. Then we proceed to puttying. It is needed to hide defects in the form of cracks, scratches, chips. To do this, we need a rubber spatula and putty itself. Gently rub all scratches and cracks.

Leave putty to dry completely. After drying, we remove all excess with the help of a zero sandpaper. Here is the base of the table and ready.

Stages of restoration using decoupage technique

If we decide to restore the coffee table with our own hands, for decoupage we will need the following tools and materials:

  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Napkins with drawings or special pictures for decoupage (in our version, these are photographs)
  • Polyethylene file
  • Brushes of different thickness
  • PVA glue
  • acrylic primer
  • Furniture paints (acrylic white and black in our version)
  • Stencil (but you can do without it)
  • Finish acrylic lacquer

Table restoration process step by step

1. Now we can take on the design of the coffee table. First, we need to lay the ground on the surface of the table. To do this, we use an acrylic primer. It is needed so that the paint that will be applied in the future is more evenly distributed on our product.

We prime with a brush carefully and wait about half an hour until the primer dries.

3. Now we take the drawing. In our version, this is a photograph. Dip the drawing for 30 seconds in a bowl of water.

It is very important not to overexpose the drawing, as the paper may be damaged. We take the photo out of the water and put it face down on the plastic file.

4. Since our photo paper is thick, we carefully remove the extra layers of paper so that the picture remains intact. Then apply PVA glue to the photo with a brush.

5. Now carefully turn over the file with the photo stuck to it, put it in the right place on the tabletop. Smooth the pattern through the file so that it lies evenly. And only after that we remove the file.

6. We take white acrylic paint and with a brush with hard bristles we draw the fields along the contour of the drawings. We try to keep the brush at one angle, as the bristles leave stripes. Then leave the table to dry for about 1 hour.

7. We decided to further decorate the corners of our table with a stencil. To do this, you need to attach the stencil to the corner of the tabletop and use a brush with black acrylic paint to walk over it. Hold the brush in a vertical position so that the paint does not flow under the stencil and is not smeared.

8. Now you can remove the stencil. Leave the table to dry the drawing for 1 hour.

9. And finally, after the paint has dried, you can apply a finishing acrylic varnish to fix the drawings. We also apply varnish with a brush.

10. Finally, the restoration of the table is coming to an end. To be able to use the table, it needs to dry. Let dry in a well-ventilated area overnight. After the expiration of this time, use it to your health!

Now you know how to update a coffee table with your own hands, the photos above demonstrate what kind of masterpiece you can create yourself. Do not throw away old furniture, give outdated items the opportunity to please you for some more time, give them a second life!

By restoring old pieces of furniture, you can not only save money, but also get a unique piece of furniture for the interior. From this article you will learn how to restore an old wooden table with your own hands.

Buying, whether it's a table for the kitchen or for an office, is not always the right decision. This is especially true of high-quality models made of expensive wood species. In such situations, it is much more profitable to restore the table, which will cost much less than buying a wooden product of comparable quality. Plus, antique models are valued more and more over time, and in ten years your table can increase significantly in value.

Of course, it is not at all easy to restore the table on your own, but with due desire and the presence of certain skills, it is quite possible. If you are not sure of the successful outcome of this venture, then it is better to immediately turn to professionals. Well, if you are eager to do it yourself, now we will talk about the existing methods for restoring and updating the table.

Ways to update the table

There are several traditional ways to update the surfaces of old tables. The most common of these is the application of a new paintwork, or in other words, regular painting. Next, we will present step-by-step instructions for implementing this process. For those who want to give their table a unique and creative design, stencil surface painting is suitable. Patterns or pattern you can choose yourself.

Laying ceramic tiles on the countertop gives it an attractive appearance, and also makes it more durable and practical: it is not afraid of high temperatures and moisture, which allows you to put hot pots on the surface and use any washing methods. The most aesthetic way is to use the decoupage technique, which consists in applying various color patterns to the surface. The most budgetary way is sticking PVC film. It allows you to change the appearance of the product and hide existing surface defects.

Restoration of the table by painting

Before proceeding with the restoration, you must make sure that the table is subject to this process and does not have critical damage. The supports must be reliable, if possible, it is necessary to tighten or glue the connecting elements. The tabletop should not have strong cracks and chips. In some situations, you can replace the legs or base of the table. Thus, its reliability and stability will be precisely ensured.

Removing old paint

To complete the following restoration steps, you will need a grinder, sandpaper, enamel paint, brushes, a primer, and wax or varnish. After completing the preparatory work and checking the reliability of the fasteners, we proceed to remove the old paintwork. This is a laborious process that requires a lot of effort. It is recommended to use a belt type grinder, as it is easier to work with.

Grinding should be along the fibers, which will avoid scratches, and inaccessible areas should be processed manually with sandpaper. To remove the top layer, coarse-grained paper is suitable, and to give smoothness, you need to use fine-grained paper. When working, a lot of wood dust is generated, so be sure to use safety glasses and a respirator.

Elimination of defects

After removing the paint layer, you need to clean the surface of dust and check it for hidden defects. Everything, even the smallest cracks and chips, must be repaired with a special wood putty, and then re-sand the patches that have arisen. The result should be a perfectly flat surface without any defects.

Preparation for staining

The next step is to prepare the surface for painting. To do this, it is necessary to thoroughly clean it from dust and degrease. Then several layers of primer are applied, which will allow the paint to lie evenly, as well as extend the life of the product. You can prime with a brush or roller. The drying time of the primer is about 10-12 hours, after which you can proceed directly to applying a layer of paint.

Coloring

For high-quality staining, it is important to choose the right paint. It is not recommended to use cheap paints, as they are often not of the best quality and can crack quickly. Water-based or acrylic-based enamel paint will do. The brush is also an important factor: it should not shed during use. Instead of a paint brush, you can use a large art brush. The paint is applied in 2-3 layers, after which it remains to dry for several days.

Surface protection

After the paint has dried, be sure to protect the surface from scratches, water and other influences. For this, a special water-based protective varnish or wax paste is suitable. The varnish is applied in several layers, each of which is slightly sanded after preliminary drying, which takes about 4 hours. Upon completion of the operation, the surface will have a pleasant glossy sheen, and the paint will be protected from mechanical stress.

The second option is to protect the surface with a wax paste. In this case, the surface will have an elegant matte sheen. Wax is applied to the surface by rubbing with a cotton cloth in several layers. After that, it is polished in a circular motion and left to dry for a week. During this time, the absorbed wax will give the countertop the required properties. After the protective coatings have dried, the restoration process can be considered completed, and the table is ready for use.

Having completed the restoration of an old wooden table yourself, you can be proud of the result. Giving old furniture a new life is much more correct and profitable than just throwing it away and buying a new one.

The old table, if it is still functional, easily turns into a new one. The result may even exceed your expectations, because the new table will be brighter, more original and, most importantly, positively charged with your creativity. Stock up on inspiration, simple materials and go ahead, embody ideas!

Note before the start: in almost all cases, the table needs to be prepared for transformation. Wipe it with a sandpaper, clean it of dust and degrease with alcohol or special means.

Painting is one of the fastest and most effective techniques in furniture decor. To make it more interesting, we suggest making the table striped. Masking tape will help to get the job done smoothly: paint the table in the main color, and then stick strips of tape and apply a couple of layers of a different color. Peel off the tape - the effect is ready. Can be repeated many times to make stripes of different colors and widths. Do not forget to varnish everything for reliability. TIn the same way, you can create zigzags, for example.

Paint with slate paint

A table painted with special slate paint will be laconic black or dark green. But now you can leave notes and draw with crayons right on the table. And how much more convenient it is to play board games where you have to record points! The table itself can serve as a field for tic-tac-toe or a gallows.

Paste over with a film

The film can also be not simple, but slate or even with the effect of a white marker board. Over a table with a pattern of triangular pieces of film, as in the photo below, you will have to tinker longer, but the result will be very stylish!

Stripes with colored tape

A striped table can be made not only with the help of painting. Lines of decorative tape or electrical tape in different colors and patterns will make the table bright, shiny and elegant. This is perfect for a nursery or will add a touch of mischief to an adult interior.

tile

Ceramic tile or mosaic will make the countertop not only beautiful, but also very practical, because the tile is not afraid of moisture and is easy to clean. The principle is the same as with walls: tile adhesive plus grout. You can take a whole tile, or you can beat it for the effect of a Spanish mosaic. You will find more creative ideas from leftover tiles.

Cover with book pages

Choose your favorite book and give it a second life: glue each page to the table with PVA glue. Several layers of varnish (preferably from a can) will make the surface smooth and ennoble the color. It's a good idea to take dictionary pages or sheet music.

romantic lace

A simple technique will help to make the tabletop more elegant - coloring through lace. To do this, you need to take a lace doily or tulle that you don’t mind ruining, put it on the table on top of the base coat of paint and apply a different color on top. It is better to use a sponge or spray paint so that the image does not smear from the movements of the roller.
