In most cases, the lawn in the country house plays a major role in the landscaping of your site. The presence of only one bright emerald, soft, well-kept and beautiful lawn gives the site a sophisticated, simple and, at the same time, rich style. Regardless of the area and function of the lawn, there is a certain sequence of its creation and care. By following the correct sequence described in this article, you can significantly reduce the cost and time for maintenance when creating a lawn on your own, and most importantly, always achieve an even, whole and fresh lawn.

About types of lawns

In the absence of a ready-made lawn, when planning, first of all, it is worth deciding on its function: will the lawn serve only as an element of decor, or be a field for various types of activities. There are several types: parterre, Mauritanian, natural, landscape gardening, sports and special.

Parterre lawn

This type, also called the English lawn, has a purely decorative function. Its height in the summer is 3 - 3.5 cm, it consists of expensive and delicate herbs that need sunlight, are afraid of shady places, moving along it, picnicking and any other physical activity.

Despite all the costs, it is this lawn that is the most beautiful and richest, emphasizing the high economic and cultural status of its owner.

Mostly, this lawn on the site also performs a decorative function, the grasses used reach a height of more than 10 cm and are flowering (meadow chamomile, field cornflower, poppy, large-flowered flax). Afraid of kneading, a certain frequency of haircuts is necessary.

A well-chosen bouquet of flowers in a herbal mixture will give the owner a wonderful palette of colors, but it is worth keeping in mind that the larger such a lawn in area, the less exclusive and premium it will look.

natural lawn

By ridding the planned area filled with grasses of weeds and tall plants, any area densely occupied by grasses can be covered with a natural lawn. Such a lawn does not require special soil and grass mixtures.

On sale there are special meadow mixtures that allow you to give any lawn a certain look. Maintenance of such a lawn is minimal, as are economic costs, but in appearance, this type loses to everyone else.

Landscape gardening

Due to the greatest prevalence, it is often referred to as an ordinary lawn. Garden lawn consists of tough, rough grasses, 5-6 cm high. Such a lawn can grow on poor soils, it is slightly subject to changes in shady areas and excessive sunlight.

It is a compromise of aesthetics and functionality, it is possible to arrange picnics and recreation areas without harm, place inflatable pools, temporary paraphernalia.

Sports

This lawn is used for intensive impact on the soil, near playgrounds and sports grounds, areas for walking areas. Growing cereals have good resistance to trampling and abrasion.

As a rule, mixtures for sports turf are more expensive and their creation requires additional costs.

On our site you can find contacts of construction companies that offer the service of drafting projects and performing landscape works of any complexity. You can directly communicate with representatives by visiting the exhibition of houses "Low-Rise Country".

Special

This type can be bought ready-made in the form of rolls. Rolls are sold already with turf, easily adapt to the applied soil.

About the herbs used

Cereal mixtures for parterre lawn for summer cottages contain seeds of bluegrass meadow, red fescue and thin bent grass. Moorish blends contain flax, cornflower, marigold, chamomile, nemesia, bluegrass, and fescue seeds. Lawn landscaping mixes have ryegrass, sheep's fescue and bluegrass seeds.

source seattlehelpers.org

The sports turf consists of pasture ryegrass, red fescue and bentgrass.

Each individual species has different weather resistance. Mixtures with 3 or more types allow you to hide the weakest qualities of cereal crops, so that the lawn can be evenly contrasted, both under the sun and in the shade.

About the necessary tools

Having decided on the type of lawn, having purchased the necessary seeds, it is necessary to prepare a site for sowing, for which you will need the following tools:

  • Ramming device

  • irrigation hose

On our website you can get acquainted with the most - from the construction companies presented at the exhibition of houses "Low-Rise Country".

About soil preparation and site selection features

Work related to soil preparation and sowing seeds can be divided into several stages.

Source sovet-sadovody.ru

The first step is to determine the type of soil. To do this, it is enough to dig on a clear day, take a handful of earth in the palm of your hand, examine the color, crush it, and determine the type of soil by the following factors:

    sandy soil characterized by a large amount of sand, it is coarse and grainy, water is quickly carried away from the surface of the sand, removing useful substances. This soil needs to be fertilized and watered regularly.

    clayey the soil holds water too much, it is fertile, but there may be problems with drainage. The clay is sticky, has a gray color, and forms a lump when compressed.

    Peat the soil is dark, loose and soft. It is poor in nutrients, it is very wet, as it is found in marshy places. It is worth providing an additional layer to drain excess water

    lime the soil does not form a company, crumbly and granular to the touch. This type is fertile and passes water well.

    Loam is a mixture of sand and clay, such soil is soft to the touch, the shade varies from gray to brownish brown. Average in fertility, passes water moderately.

Regardless of the type of soil, it is important to maintain the correct soil acidity. The most favorable acidity for most types of cereals is 6.0 - 7.0 pH units. To determine the acidity, you can use litmus paper and determine the acidity on a scale.

Source shopsad.ru

If the earth has an acidity of less than 6, you can sprinkle the earth with lime, chalk. If the soil has a slightly alkaline environment, you can use special solutions or crushed peat.

On our site you can familiarize yourself with the most. In the filters, you can set the desired direction, the presence of gas, water, electricity and other communications.

Soil preparation

So that nothing prevents the grass from growing, and it is homogeneous, the ground should be cleaned of weeds, stones, sticks and possible debris. Places that have irregularities should be leveled with a rake, pronounced hills will have to be demolished with a shovel. Herbicides can be used for thorough weed control. If the cultivated area has a large number of shrubs, small trees, weeds, and is also not level, it is best to simply dig up the entire area, and then start sorting out the roots of unwanted plants.

Source hozsektor.ru

Soils with poor drainage (clay, peaty) need to create a layer through which water will easily leave. To do this, remove 20-25 cm from the soil and put a drainage layer in the form of geotextiles, broken bricks or gravel.

Schematically, the plot with drainage looks like this Source warecoz.saporehus.ru.net

It will not be superfluous to use additional fertile land, place it in a uniform layer 5-10 cm thick on the territory.

Sometimes a small layer of fertile soil is laid on the drainage. Source besplatka.ua

Regardless of the fertility of your soil, an extra layer will not adversely affect your green lawn, but will only improve its quality.

About sowing and cultivation

Before sowing, the soil should be loosened with a rake with small teeth, so that it would be easier for the seeds to enter the ground.

After the rake, small grooves are formed, into which the seeds fall. Source zagorodnaya-zhizn.moscow

Knowing the size of the planned lawn, the number of seeds for sowing can be calculated according to the proportion, where at least 50 grams are required per 1 m 2. seeds, or for 1 weave at least 5 kg. It is not rational to spend more than 7 kg per 1 acre of land with any soil fertility and grass type. The sowing depth should not exceed 1 cm.

A certain amount of seeds is required for each meter of the plot - it makes no sense to sow more Source thestar.com

For sowing, you can use an ordinary 2 liter plastic bottle, making holes in it for seeds.

For a larger area, you can use a special device where the amount of seeds will be dosed.

Source preschooloptions.org

Seeding devices can be different Source greenland.ee

At the beginning and most intensively, the edges of the lawn are sown, then along the entire territory. Seeds can be mixed with dry fertilizer, which can speed up their germination.

source seattlehelpers.org

After sowing, the ground must be tamped for additional compaction, getting rid of bumps and protection from birds.

Source dacha.help

Source parnik-teplitsa.ru

It is necessary to water the earth with a wide spray of water, whatever to prevent the displacement of seeds on the surface of the earth, the appearance of pits and hills. The soil must be moist, too much water deprives the roots of access to oxygen, which leads to the withering of the plant.

The first shoots appear after 7-10 days, and after 20 days most of the herbage reaches 10 cm. When the grass reaches a height of more than 15 cm, the first mowing can be carried out. This usually happens 30-40 days after sowing.

About care

Lawn care and shaping consists of moisture control, periodic mowing and weeding.

Naturally, with the goal of creating a natural lawn with a predominance of low-growing species, on moist soil, all maintenance can be reduced to only a haircut. However, in this case, there is a high probability of obtaining an uneven lawn pattern. Somewhere the grass will be greener, somewhere on the contrary withered and rare. Depending on the type of lawn, the cutting height varies, but it is not recommended to cut any lawn less than 3 cm.

Lawn type Cut to, see:
Summer Autumn-spring
Parterre 3 4
Sports 3 4
Landscape gardening 5 6

As a rule, no more than 1/3 of the height is cut, when the grass growth is 1.5 - 2 cm more than normal. Overgrown grass is mowed in 2-3 stages. In summer, the frequency is 10-15 days, in autumn and spring 7-10 days. Do not leave cut grass on the lawn.

Source mir-ogorod.ru

Watering is best done by sprinkling. To do this, a spray device can be used at the end of the hose. You can either buy it at any garden store or make it yourself from a plastic bottle. Watering is recommended to be carried out in the early morning, or in the evening, when the sun is far from the zenith. If the lawn grows in small paths, it can be watered from a watering can.

Video description

The irrigation system is often equipped even before the sowing of the lawn, about this in the video:

It is necessary to water the lawn periodically, during the dry season, the interval can be 3 days. Constant watering of low intensity is not recommended. The average amount of water for a temperate latitude per 1 m 2 is 30 liters. Do not allow the appearance of puddles covering the grass.

Conclusion

A beautiful and well-groomed lawn makes the house not only more attractive, but also significantly increases its value if you are thinking about moving. This is an investment that will pay off over time. The main thing is to do all the work correctly and follow all the recommendations for care.

In an effort to create landscape design in the country with their own hands, many gardeners make a gross mistake by planting only shrubs, trees and flower beds, while completely forgetting about the “floor covering” of the garden - the lawn.

But what if, after hearing about the difficulties of growing lawn grass, you are worried that you simply do not have enough strength to prepare the site, fight difficult weeds, painstakingly growing seeds, fertilizing, regular watering and mowing? There is a way out - sow the plot not with grass, but with a flowering mixture for the lawn and create a motley, easy-to-care Moorish lawn in the country.

Such a decorative variegated or one-color lawn is formed by including thirty or even forty meadow flowers and grasses in the traditional mixture for lawn grass.

What is Moorish lawn

The village lawn owes its appearance to the Moors (hence the name), who once, many centuries ago, owned part of Spain. Travelers who first set foot on the land of the city of Cordoba - the focus of Moorish art, culture and science, were amazed by the richness of the ennobled oasis. Everything in this cozy city was extraordinarily beautiful. But the garden around the palace was especially beautiful. Well-groomed and large, with fountains and, it was all sown with wild flowers, emerald lawn grass and ornamental cereals.

The new solution to the usual lawn was to the liking of the nomadic Europeans. They adopted the custom of planting wild flowering herbs and cereals in desert areas, partly replacing their neatly trimmed lawns with naturally beautiful, low-maintenance flowering meadows - Moorish-style lawns.

The advantage of lawns of this type lies mainly in the fact that they can be placed even in those areas of the garden where the soil is depleted and dried up (or waterlogged). You do not need to spend a lot of money on them, and it is very easy to pick up seeds for a perennial flowering lawn. In order for the ornamental meadow to be covered with flowering throughout the season, it is enough to know the timing of flowering of each plant in the composition.

Cereals, flowers and herbs for the Moorish lawn

So, you have made the final decision to break the Moorish lawn in the country. Plant seeds for a multi-colored meadow should be chosen unpretentious, easy to care for. The plot is sown with the help of special mixtures of perennial grasses with the inclusion of perennial and decorative flowering flowers. (The higher the sowing rate, the denser the flowers will grow to each other).

Important! All flowers should bloom continuously. And then, when flowering, shed the seeds so that next year they will germinate again.

When decorating a low Moorish lawn, anise, thyme, mint and lemon balm are often used. High - fragrant herbs and flowers that emit a lot of pollen and thus attract colorful butterflies and honey bees to the garden.

The bulbous ones in the Moorish lawn are the first to color the garden in spring, while other meadow plants barely peck out of the soil. In summer, when the primroses turn yellow, their fading leaves will hide the grass and meadow flowers in lush color.

Advice. If you are a beginner, it is better to start sowing Moorish lawn with a one-component mixture - without proper, albeit easy care, a multi-component lawn of several plants over time will resemble not a charming lawn, but a front garden with weeds. (The lawn of low-grade carnations and thyme turns out to be unusually fabulous - it is a pleasure to grow it yourself).

In the photo below, the following flowers are sown for the Mauritanian lawn: blue cornflower, sowing chrysanthemum, self-seed poppy, common agrostemma and field navel.

The material was prepared for the site www.site

Such a wonderful variegated lawn was obtained from only 5 types of field plants (on average, 20-40 unpretentious cereals and flowers can be included in the device of a Mauritanian meadow). It all depends on the landscape design of your garden.

Moorish lawn - buy or sow with your own hands?

It is easy to buy a mixture for a Mauritanian lawn for little money in a store for gardeners and summer residents (it is recommended to give preference to domestic seeds) or make the mixture yourself. If we talk about the approximate ratio of plants, then it should be as follows: 80% of cereal grasses and 20% of flowers. The mixture is sown at the rate of 10 g per 1 sq. m.

If you really want a strongly blooming lawn, then do exactly the opposite than on purchased mixtures. Make up your lawn with 70% annuals and 20% short grass. It will turn out very nice.

Moorish lawn is sown in the same way as ornamental lawn grass - from early spring. In order for the plants to fully develop and bloom, it is recommended to plant them in unshaded places. If you are planning to organize a meadow among trees, then give preference to such plants as ifeyon, kandyk, lily, white flower, arizema, anemone, aronnik, trillium, snowdrop, etc.

When arranging a magnificent living carpet, do not set aside too large, well-lit area for it.

Planting a Moorish lawn - step by step instructions

  • Step 1

We free the soil from weeds (we treat heavily infected areas with glyphosate several times) and, after about a month, we remove the top layer of soil to a depth of 8-10 cm.

  • Step 2

We carefully dig the soil with a shovel 25 cm deep and apply low-fat organic fertilizers, sand and peat. This should be done 8-10 days before the start of sowing.

  • Step 3

We provide a slope of 3 degrees to drain rainwater from the lawn. (By making good drainage, you will prevent your flowering lawn from turning into a swamp due to prolonged summer showers).

  • Step 4

Immediately before planting, we level and compact the ground with a bayonet shovel and rake, and then with a garden roller. It is recommended to do this in dry weather.

  • Step 5

After leveling, we once again walk along the surface of the site with a special lawn rake. This is necessary in order to remove the newly formed tubercles after compaction.

  • Step 6

On a flat, soft and moderately moistened surface, manually sow the mixture for the Mauritanian lawn mixed with sand in proportions of 1: 3 (approximately 0.0001 g of seeds per 100 g of dry sand). You can sow the plot evenly or make islands of flowers, first sowing grasses, and meadow flowers between them.

  • Step 7

We immerse the seeds with a rake to a depth of 5 mm, roll them up and make drip irrigation (strong water pressure can blur the crop).

  • Step 8

We cover the area with non-woven material - in this case, the seedlings will be uniform and friendly. But even if the seedlings seem too rare for you, in no case do not rush to sow - the herbs sprout at different times, sometimes the interval can reach 4 weeks.

The motley meadow, dotted with a dozen varieties of herbs and wild flowers, like a magnet, attracts the eye. For you - the secrets of planting and caring for a Mauritanian lawn.

Peculiarities

The ideal English lawn looks spectacular, but rather boring. Bright Moorish attracts with naturalness and restrained beauty.

Benefits of a flowering lawn:

  • simple care, a minimum of agrotechnical measures;
  • to give a pleasant look, you need to mow the site only once - during the growing season;
  • easy to pick up herbal and flower mixtures;
  • the number of plant species suitable for creating a variegated meadow at the dacha reaches forty;
  • a beautiful corner is easy to create on insufficiently fertile soil;
  • weed growth is rather slow;
  • you can equip a Moorish lawn even in a small area.

Stages of creating a flowering meadow with your own hands

It is not enough to simply sow grass and wildflowers. Moorish lawn care is easy, but the arrangement will require accuracy and attention to detail. Nothing supernatural, but carelessness is inappropriate.

Step by step:

  1. Choose a suitable location. The best option is an open, well-lit area.
  2. There are no special requirements for the composition of the soil.
  3. The site should not be very large. You can arrange a flowering meadow next to a hedge, in front of a house or near a reservoir (if any).
  4. Buy grass seeds and meadow flowers. Combine flowers according to your taste, choosing brighter colors or calmer tones.
  5. Experienced summer residents recommend buying domestic varieties, they take root better in the local climate.
  6. Level the soil, get rid of weeds and accumulated debris. If there are too many weeds, treat the soil with herbicides. Doses - according to the instructions.
  7. Dig up the soil, apply peat, fertilizer and sand. Before planting, it is desirable to feed the soil with nitrogen-containing compounds.
  8. The final stage is compaction and leveling of the soil. Moorish lawn can be planted in 2-3 weeks.

Seeds. Compound

For arranging a flowering meadow on a plot, ready-made mixtures of seeds are sold in specialized stores "Everything for a garden-garden", "Green World", etc. In separate packages are cereals and seeds of flowering plants.

How to sow:

  1. The first option: mix the contents of both bags and sow both herbs and flowers at the same time. The lawn will be more uniform.
  2. Option two: sow cereals, and then flowers. As a result, bright "islands" will appear on the lawn.

Sow seeds only in well-warmed soil. In different regions, this period falls on April-May.

Landing rules:

  • moisten the soil, but do not flood it;
  • deepen the seeds from 3 to 5 mm;
  • number of seeds: 10 g per 1 sq. m;
  • gently level the soil and water the lawn.

Seedlings will appear in a week or two. By mid-July, the lawn with flowers will be perfect.

Advice: a non-woven fabric stretched over a future flowering lawn will speed up seed germination and protect seedlings from birds. Provide normal air access to the soil.

Flowers for flower beds and lawns

A bright corner that pleases the eye from spring to the end of autumn is easy to create.

Choose plants that bloom at different times.

Each owner will easily find suitable cereals and flowers.

Advice: the optimal ratio of flowers and meadow grasses: 80% to 20% or 95% to 5%. Check in the store which plants are annuals and which ones will delight you for several years.

Popular herbs:

  1. Bluegrass meadow.
  2. The bezel is thin.
  3. Perennial ryegrass.
  4. Timothy grass.

Flowers for Moorish lawn:

  1. Oriental poppy. Large, bright flowers visible from afar. Scarlet poppies - the highlight of the motley meadow, bloom in mid-May.
  2. bathing suit. Herbaceous perennial has taken root in many parts of Russia. Fiery yellow buds - "roses" will enliven any lawn. Likes moist soil, several interesting varieties have been bred.
  3. Cornflower field. Delicate blue flowers give the lawn a pleasant look. It grows well, has a long flowering period.
  4. Chamomile meadow. A well-known perennial. Blooms for a long time, looks good next to bluebells and cornflowers.
  5. red clover. Low plants with pale lilac flowers are unpretentious, pleasing to the eye and attract bees. Long flowering period.
  6. Nemesia. Beautiful, yellow or white flowers are collected in graceful inflorescences. The plant tolerates winter well, grows well in sunny areas.
  7. Marigold. A plant with bright yellow or orange flowers has taken root well in different regions of the country. Marigolds bloom for a long time, do not require special care.
  8. Chinese carnation. Bushes up to 0.5 m high with narrow leaves are frequent "guests" of Moorish or flowering lawns. Flowers - from white to purple, without fail with a burgundy border and slits. Hybrid varieties - annuals, flowering - from June to August.

Note! Many flowers for the Moorish lawn are honey plants. Butterflies and bees will often fly to your site. Choose flowers with bright buds.

Lawn decoration with flowers. Photo gallery

stick basic rules for the placement of flowering plants:

  • plant creeping or cushion perennials in the foreground;
  • leave room for growth, follow the chess order;
  • on a small lawn, do not get carried away with the number of compositions;
  • select plants that have similar environmental requirements;
  • the assortment should provide flowering for a long time;
  • do not forget about bulbous species that go well with cereals.

Photo of a Mauritanian (blooming) lawn.

When we want to make it easier for ourselves to create a lawn, many of us purchase ready-made grass mixtures. This is what I did too, having caught fire with the idea of reproducing a Moorish lawn on my site. Moreover, on the bags with mixtures of herbs, photographs with charming colorful flowering lawns promised to create a cozy picturesque corner of the wild with meadow and wild flowers so dear to us ...

The first year after planting, the lawn behaved almost like in the picture, but was less flowery, and to be completely honest, it was completely faded. The next year, it looked like an ordinary, unkempt, weedy section of a forgotten garden.

The second attempt was just as unsuccessful. I think many landscape design enthusiasts are familiar with these "cute features" of the Moorish lawn.

And so conclusions from my experience. First, ready mixes should be bought carefully. In our conditions, many flowers from imported grass mixtures of the Mauritanian lawn do not have time to bloom in full force or acquire mature seeds, which is an indispensable condition for the reproduction of the lawn. Secondly, if such a lawn is sown on fertile soil, then the weeds defeat all the delights of the Mauritanian lawn.

And yet I managed to achieve the picturesqueness of a capricious lawn! This happened thanks to the famous landscape designer Irina Konstantinovna Barysheva - I made a grass mixture for the Mauritanian lawn according to her recommendations. I now call this option “Moorish for the Moscow Region” or “Moorish a la Rus” and I will gladly share the secrets of a motley lawn.

Secrets of the Mauritanian lawn for the Moscow region

The height of the Moorish lawn is 40-50 cm. It is cut once! The only haircut is done in autumn. For the independent existence of such a lawn, an area of 50 to 100 sq.m. is sufficient.

We make a flower mixture for the lawn

It is better to make a mixture for Mauritanian lawn yourself, here are a few proven combinations.

First option:

  • gypsophila annual - 1 g;
  • escholcia - 1 g;
  • viscaria - 1 g;
  • poppy self-seed - 1 g;
  • cornflower - 1 g (a mixture of multi-colored annual cornflowers is possible);
  • nemea - 1 g.
Total: 6 g of flower seeds per 1 sq.m, everything else - bluegrass and fescue (from 40 to 60 g per 1 sq.m).

Second option:

  • gypsophila annual - 1 g;
  • poppy self-seed - 2 g;
  • viscaria - 1 g;
  • escholcia - 2 g;
  • cornflower - 4 g;
  • breeze average - 2 g.
Total: 12 g of flower seeds per 1 sq.m, the rest is bluegrass and fescue.

Third option:

  • a mixture of seeds of annual flowers "Wild Flowers", which can be purchased ready-made
  • the rest is red clover or fescue.

Red clover - a good basis for the "northern" Mauritanian lawn

You can do otherwise: collect yourself seeds of favorite plants in natural meadows. These can be seeds of chamomile, kupyr, St. They look good and behave well on the meadows, meadow calico, tuberous goat grass, annual bluegrass, field cleaner, cinquefoil, bedstraw, adonis, rank.

It is better to sow them before winter, mixed with clover and fescue. Only in this case, naturally, the nature of the lawn will change. After all, its decorative effect will depend on the selection of plants: whether it will be “truly Moorish” or just a forb meadow.

Later, I tried to add my favorite meadow flowers to the mixture, but tried to be careful. So, by combining and composing various herbal mixtures, you can unexpectedly create that natural charm that we appreciate so much in the garden, as well as set the right mood with a certain selection of colors.

Choosing a place and equipping the lawn

Such lawns are arranged only in the background or on the site in front of the fence at the entrance to the house. To admire the meadow, it is necessary to mow a path inside the lawn, as wild flowers are tender plants and are easily trampled. It is better to give the path smooth forms, emphasizing the romantic charm of simple, but such beloved flower placers. You can give this meadow a shape that matches the shape of the path or repeats it along the contour - and thereby achieve an additional decorative effect.

Digging through books and magazines, I found information that there is a composition trampling-resistant wildflowers: leucanthemum, corostavnik, meadow sage, spreading bellflower, buttercup, sainfoin and firecracker. But it is better to spare them all the same and just admire them. And it is more convenient to trample, play and lie on a regular lawn.

I think that in our climate, large plantain, creeping clover, highlander bird, annual bluegrass are resistant to mechanical stress. True, if you create a meadow only from these plants, it will be a very poor and not too decorative plant community.

The most herbaceous and powerful meadows grow on dry and poor soils: weeds do not fatten there, and delicate wild flowers are very comfortable. You can create a decorative lawn in damp, wet or shady areas - you just need to choose the right plants.

For example, in damp areas, snake mountaineer or crayfish necks behave well ( Poligonum bistorta), meadow geranium ( Geranium pratense) and bathing suit ( Trollius). And for a spring lawn, daisies and spring primroses are good.

Recommendations for creating a Moorish lawn and caring for it in the conditions of central Russia

Good soil preparation is very important for success - the same as for arranging a regular lawn, but the soil should not be rich in peat and black earth, but in sand. The poorer the soil, the better the wild flowers feel. And of course, you need to choose the right mixture of seeds for specific conditions: the appropriate type of soil, humidity and light.

Sand is also recommended to be applied after autumn mowing. You can add poppy seeds, chamomile, cornflower seeds mixed with sand, if suddenly powerful and fast-growing cereals take over. This has to be done almost every fall, but fortunately for most wildflowers, overseeding is optional.

The first haircut after sowing is best done 1-2 months after sowing, and then cut only in the fall. The haircut is high.

It is desirable to water such a clearing less frequently - the “richest” lawns are formed only on dry, scarce soils, and in the lower layer of meadow grasses the humidity is always higher. It is recommended to use a sprayer - a strong jet from a hose will break fragile plants. It is necessary to fertilize a forb meadow very rarely so as not to breed weeds.

Ideas from the designer

There are several more ways to create decorative lawns, which I.K. Barysheva recommends. They are somewhat more difficult to perform, but the result is worth the effort.

Meadow lawn, or cultivated meadow

Compound:
  • ready mix "Ordinary lawn";
  • clover red and white;
  • alfalfa;
  • sainfoin;
  • you can add small-bulb flowers and small annuals.
Disadvantages:
  • does not tolerate prolonged trampling;
  • it can not be arranged everywhere, only along the periphery of the site;
  • due to the large number of weeds, it looks untidy;
  • harder to create than a regular lawn.
Pros:
  • can be cut once a month;
  • the decorativeness is enhanced by the fact that such a lawn is cut higher than usual, and this haircut allows you to draw good decorative lines in the landscape.

fantasy lawns

Fragrant lawns: long strips of various shapes and widths, intricately intertwined at the behest of the landscape designer, are sown with one fragrant grass. A fragrant decorative carpet is formed. For example, like this:
  • fragrant spikelet,
  • common thyme,
  • allisum marine,
  • field mint,
  • pharmaceutical camomile,
  • red clover.
Lawns of varying heights: against the background of an ordinary lawn, an irregularly shaped strip of a taller fragrant plant, such as mint, is placed.

figured lawn created with a curly haircut. The grass is cut in sections of different heights (6 cm and 3 cm) with different patterns. You just need to remember that it is quite difficult to achieve an excellent result at one time. Patience, patience, patience again and ... your lawn will turn into lace! But it can not be run, the haircut should be regular. With due perseverance, you can turn the lawn into a real work of art. I have seen a lawn whose curly haircut resembled the patterns of Andre Le Nôtre's famous parterre flower gardens.

Every year the flowering or Moorish lawn is gaining more and more popularity. What is it connected with? Everything is simple. The Mauritanian lawn is both a beautiful juicy greenery of low grasses, and a bright meadow blooming all summer from a wide variety of flowers in a “one bottle”.

In addition, such a lawn requires a minimum of care. To create it, the most unpretentious flowers are used. There are practically no weeds on it, and if they come out, the rapidly growing flowers clog them. It is also not necessary to constantly mow it (only 1 time - in the fall after flowering). Flowers attract beneficial insects to the garden. The pros are many!

What are flowering lawns?

One or more types of flowers.

Moorish lawn often consists of only one type of flower. For example, a lawn of flowering clover is very popular.

Variegated and monochromatic.

Even lawns consisting of several types of flowers can be monochromatic. For this, flowers of different types are specially selected, with different flowering periods, but in the same color scheme.

From perennial or annual flowers, or from a mixture thereof.

Everyone knows the advantages and disadvantages of flyers: they bloom all summer, but only one year. Although many of them reproduce by self-sowing, and very high quality. Therefore, do not be afraid of lawns with flyers.

Perennial flowers must be carefully selected according to the timing of flowering.

Choosing flowers for the lawn.

Every year more and more different mixtures for flowering lawns appear in stores. But you can choose flowers and herbs yourself. In this case, you will get only your unique masterpiece.

Most often, Moorish lawns sold in stores consist of a mixture of seeds of cereal grasses and wild flowers, in a ratio of 80-95% to 5-20%. If the lawn will consist of different types of flowers, then they must be selected so that they bloom at different times, from early spring to early autumn.

Flowers for Mauritanian lawns are used in a variety of ways. However, there are two rules to keep in mind:

    they must be unpretentious, drought-resistant;

    it is desirable to use undersized flowers of the same height.

Here are some flowers that are often used for Mauritanian lawns: marigolds, cornflowers, various varieties of flax, delphinium, nemesia, chrysanthemum, nigella, Chinese carnation, escholzia, columbine, gaillardia, doronicum, bathing suit, erigeron, veronica, primrose, gypsophila, carnation, poppy, evening primrose, zeferanthus, primroses, daisies, toadflax, poppy, dwarf zinnias, tarry, meadow clover, forget-me-nots, toadflax, oriental poppy, etc.

Of the cereals for this type of lawn, perennial ryegrass, red fescue and thin bent grass, meadow timothy, meadow bluegrass are most suitable.

The best place for a flowering lawn

Since almost all flowers love sunlight, it is best to choose open sunny areas. Mauritanian lawns use plants that can grow and flower even in poor soils, making site selection easier.

But do not plant the whole garden with them, otherwise you will get "parsley". Also, do not plant Moorish lawn next to flower beds and flower beds. The flower bed needs a green background that makes the flowers growing on it even brighter.

The best time for sowing is the second half of May.

- we scatter the seeds first along, then across the selected territory,

We deepen the seeds with a rake by 1-1.5 cm,

Blooming lawn care.

Shoots should appear 10-15 days after planting. It is necessary to water the Mauritanian lawn as it dries, in hot weather 1-2 times a week.

They mow the lawn in the fall, after flowering and seed ripening (the second is very important if the flowers are annuals). After mowing, the grass is left directly on the lawn for several days so that the seed pods dry out and the seeds fall to the ground.
