If you want to make the seat softer, then you fix each new layer of foam rubber along the edges, do not glue it.

4) After gluing the parts, carefully sand them with a grinder and sandpaper (round and small parts cannot be passed by a grinder). Remove the remaining fine dust with a slightly damp cloth. Once again, inspect everything for cracks.

5) Finishing the seat. At restoring an old chair is no less important than the repair process. On the widest part of the seat we fasten the tapestry with a stapler, pull it forward very tightly, bend the edges under the seat. There should be at least 5 cm of fabric along each edge. We fix the fabric with a furniture stapler at a distance of 1-2 cm. Repeat the procedure on all sides of the seat.

The result is such a kind of drum, inside of which is not emptiness, but foam rubber.

6) We cover all the details with a stain, after a day we paint over with 3-4 layers of varnish so that the chair does not become cracked at the very first landing of the guest on it.

7) We assemble a chair. When gluing the parts, we do not spare glue, the excess is very carefully erased and removed with a slightly damp cloth.

We strengthen the details of the connection of the seat and legs, crossbars and backrest with metal corners mounted on screws!

Most chairs from the USSR period were assembled using epoxy glue. To disassemble such a chair, rags and hot water are used. A moistened rag is installed at the junction of the parts. The kettle is brought to a boil and, having put a hose on its spout, on the second end of which a metal tip with a small hole is put on, the adhesive seam is treated with steam. After 2-3 minutes, carefully try to disassemble the parts, if this does not work, then the processing must be continued. After disassembling the connection, the wood is dried for several hours.

Renewal of chair parts and elimination of defects

It is necessary to once again carefully examine all the details of the subject. If cracks appear, they are glued and tightened with clamps. Small defects are filled with adhesive and tightened with tape. Clamps are needed for processing round profile parts (for example, legs). A mixture of sawdust and glue is being prepared. It is used to close all chips and holes that are no longer needed. All elements of the chair are dried for 48 hours. After that, the surface is treated with sandpaper. The upper (narrow) parts of the legs must be wrapped with a bandage. Each applied layer is smeared with glue. If the part staggers at the junction, then it is wedged. A groove is made at the end of the legs and a wedge of wood is hammered into it - while the part must firmly fall into place. The walls of the recess must be smeared with glue in advance. Such operations are best carried out if the legs of the chair directly enter the plane of the seat.

The products of the old type in this place have a side and there are crossbars. Each piece is glued and equipped with a spike. If it is necessary to strengthen such a place, then from the inside a hole is drilled in it with a thin drill and glue is injected with a syringe. If the spike is damaged, then thin wedges are hammered into the socket, after dipping them in glue.

Here you will need sandpaper of large and small fractions or a grinder. With a complete change in design, it is worth using a special composition that dissolves paint - technical acetone.

After preparing the frame for a new painting, you need to apply a primer for paint - usually it is gray or white. You will need paint and varnish materials. Structural disassembly

The connection scheme of the chair is well known, it is not difficult to disassemble the structure yourself. First, the back and rear legs are unscrewed. Then we apply the first layer of paint or varnish and after drying we check - if the base is translucent, we apply one or two more layers.

Each material has its own characteristics when staining. An anti-corrosion primer is applied to the frames of iron chairs with the first layer, after drying, the main color is applied, and if the paint is transparent, then it is applied in stages in two or three layers. When painting metal chairs, it is better to use metal enamels.

The frame of a wooden chair is first treated with wax, applying a little product to a piece of rag and carefully rubbing it into the wood, or brushed with an oil primer. Next, one or more layers of acrylic paint are applied. Such coatings of the new generation are easy to use, have no smell, dry quickly, and are suitable for indoor use.

To restore Viennese chairs, use a varnish coating on a wax base or on a primer.

For plastic chairs, painting is undesirable, since the flexibility of the material will provoke peeling of the paint, it is better to sew covers or pillows from a suitable fabric on them.

Finally, at the last stage, you need to update the upholstery of the soft parts of the chair. After the old upholstery is removed, the foam rubber of the required thickness is cut out according to the shape of the seat base, it can be fixed with glue. The fabric is cut out, taking into account the hem allowance around the foam rubber with plywood.

With a furniture stapler on the reverse side, the fabric is first fixed from opposite sides so that it is tightly stretched, then the corners are folded end-to-end, folded over the base and fixed with staples in several places on the reverse side so that the fabric does not puff. It is better to use a fabric with a floral print or plain. The geometric pattern requires a special arrangement of lines. The drawing may be skewed, so skill is needed here.

When hauling a seat with springs, batting or other dense material is first laid, then a layer of foam rubber. The fabric is cut out and attached using the same technology as with one foam rubber, but here it is important to stretch the upholstery more to smooth out the relief of the springs.

Assembly and finishing

When the chair frame is updated and the soft parts are tightened with new upholstery, all that remains is to assemble the structure. The basic rule is to assemble in the same order as disassembled. The legs and back details must be installed in the same grooves where they were originally, so the design will not lose strength. The plywood on which the seat is attached is usually screwed to the frame; in Viennese chairs, glue acts as a fixative.

Knowing all the stages of chair restoration, it is not difficult to create a stylish and unique object with the help of finishing from an unattractive piece of furniture. Just by painting the chairs in pink, blue, pistachio colors, you can get a bright color accent of the interior in the fusion style.

When updating old chairs, decoupage technique is used. This operation is performed with the help of glue, varnish and a paper-based pattern, it is also convenient to use napkins. Paper with the selected pattern is cut or torn into pieces, then these fragments are fixed with glue on the frame and seat, after drying they are varnished.
