The Count of Monte Cristo needed 12 pairs of shoes for all occasions. Sir Henry Baskerville made do with two pairs of shoes for the summer, and half of one was stolen. These days, 20 pairs of shoes for a family is not uncommon, but an apartment or a house is not Baskerville Hall or a fairy-tale palace. High-quality shoes are expensive, and budget shoes, in order to justify themselves, must leave at least a season. In this regard, the idea of making a shoe rack with your own hands is of particular relevance.

The very concept of "shoe rack" appeared relatively recently to refer to a complex that provides orderly storage of shoes out of season and the correct maintenance of everyday shoes. From the latter, as you know, the durability and wear of shoes largely depend. However, trade markup restrictions do not apply to accessories for wearable items, and for a simple shoe locker, which a craftsman can do with his own hands, merchants want up to 5,000 rubles. and more, although retail materials for it can be kept within 1500-2000 or less. How? That's what this article is for.

Former simplicity

The traditional, simplest and cheapest option for storing ordinary shoes in the hallway is a 2-row floor shelf made of 6-10 mm plywood; see drawings in fig. on right. Shoes with high tops or berets (laced tops with tongues) are placed on the protruding part. This shoe shelf is good for everyone, except for one thing: for 10 pairs, you will have to give almost 0.5 square meters. m usable area. And even worse, the width of 400 mm is the minimum possible for such a design. And if the entire hallway is 1.25 m wide? Therefore, the main trend in the design of modern shoe racks is compactness due to stretching in height and the use of simple mechanisms.

Note: depending on the availability of free space, a simple shoe rack can be made in other ways, see for example. track. video.

Now

The main module of a compact shoe rack is a wardrobe for storing shoes out of season (item 1 in the photo) with compartments for shoes without a high top and with tops / berets. The first ones are usually made 3 (spring, summer, autumn), and the high one, but those living outside the city need 4 low and 2 high branches; "superfluous" to accommodate work shoes. They will not interfere in the city, for children's shoes.

A shoe rack is complemented in the hallway, if there is enough space, with a bench or a banquette for the convenience of putting on / taking off shoes. It is advisable to make openwork shelves for drying shoes under the seat (pos. 2), but in general it is better to dry shoes, especially for country residents, in a separate dryer, see below.

If there is very little space, instead of a bench, you can get by with a pouf. Under his seat, a single owner can fit out-of-season shoes (pos. 3), but the storage conditions in this case are not entirely favorable. It is better to keep accessories for shoe care in the pouffe (see the drawing in the figure on the right), and place the stock of shoes in a separate organizer, see below. If, however, the shoes that are no longer needed are still in the pouffe, its ventilation box should be provided with holes in the bottom, and air should be cut out under the seat.

Width of pouf seat and regular bench approx. 400 mm. In a narrow hallway with them, there is less space left for the passage than ergonomics require, and even a hanger with clothes is right there. Therefore, at present, the so-called. petal shoe racks (pos. 4); shoes in them are stored in a vertical position on the shelves of folding trays, reinforced between sectoral swivel sidewalls - petals. It is possible to make a petal-type shoe rack with a width of 250-260 mm: enough to sit down, and in the hallway with a width of 1.25 m there is a passage of approx. 1 m, which is acceptable. In addition, the petal shoe rack provides good ventilation of the contents both with closed and open trays. And if you fold the tray, then the shoes dry better in it than on the shelves under the bench.

Due to their compactness and large capacity, petal shoe racks are often combined into monoblocks with other pieces of furniture for the hallway. A common option is a bedside table in the hallway with a shoe rack, pos. 5. With dimensions in terms of (600-800) x (250-270) mm, it accommodates everyday shoes for a small family. With enough space (approx. 1.1x0.4 m in plan), the monoblock is supplemented with a seat (pos. 6).

If there is a restless corner or niche in the hallway (which is not uncommon in old houses), then it is convenient to store shoes in a carousel shoe rack, pos. 7. The division of contents into 4 seasons in a carousel shoebox is obtained in the most natural way. To store winter shoes (boots, berets), shelves are partitioned off asymmetrically, see fig. on right.

Note: a fairly spacious corner in the hallway deserves more than shoe storage. For example, see another video - how to equip a corner wardrobe with a shoe compartment in the hallway.

Materials and connections

The device and dimensions of this type of shoe storage trays in a wall niche with a depth of only 200 mm are given on the next page. rice. A feature of this design is that the sockets of the swivel hinges (see below) are made simply in the form of holes in the brackets made of steel angle, reinforced from the inside on the front lining of the niche. Reclining latches are also attached to them, if the niche is far from the side walls. In this design, the front cover of the tray can be arbitrarily high, so this version of the petal shoe rack can also be made for high shoes. One condition - the front lining of the niche must be strong enough, not fragile. Drywall, for example, is not suitable in this case.

Note: how to assemble a narrow cabinet for shoes with your own hands, see the master class below.

Hinges and latches

In petal, and some other shoe racks (see below) with hinged doors, there is another, at first glance, intricate assembly - a swivel joint. It seems to be nothing but to buy, but still you can do it yourself. You only need pieces of a thin-walled seamless tube, preferably brass - pieces of ballpoint pen bodies, knee connectors of old spinning rods, etc. Cases of some varieties of Cuban cigars are great, but the prices for them now are not by the night, let it be said. And the actual procedure for making a home-made hinge of a folding tray of a shoe rack is as follows:

  • We cut off parts from the tube with a length equal to the depth of the hinge socket. Usually - in 1 / 2-2 / 3 of the thickness of the side wall of the shoe rack, but not less than 10 mm. The walls behind the nest should remain at least 5-6 mm. These will be socket clips, you need 2 for each hinge ..
  • With a scraper (scraper, reamer), the same as used, say, when installing / dismantling pipelines of air conditioners, we remove chamfers of 0.25-0.35 mm from the inside of the clips.
  • We select bolts with a round head for the clips of such a diameter that it enters the clip with a gap of up to 0.5 mm. We remove the burrs on the heads of the bolts (if the slot is straight there) with a needle file. With sandpaper, if necessary, you can fit the head to the clip.
  • Using a Forstner drill, we drill holes for the clips; it is advisable to take a drill of such a diameter (or pick up tubes for clips) so that the clips enter the hole tightly.
  • We press the clips into the holes. If they enter freely, you can glue it with any mounting adhesive for metal.
  • We put the bolts in acc. openings of the petals, tighten them with nuts with spring washers - the hinges are ready for assembly.

Vaults

Shoes that are not worn for a long time are preferably stored in a stable favorable microclimate (see above). Also, an out-of-season cabinet or shoe cabinet in another room is necessary if there is not enough space in the hallway. In general, it is undesirable to keep shoes that are not worn for a long time in the hallway, especially in a private house, where through the open front door it can breathe cold or pull dampness.

Rack and cabinet

Schemes of an open rack for long-term storage of shoes and a more compact shoe cabinet with folding doors are given in fig. top and bottom, respectively. The rack provides optimal conditions for long-term storage of up to 30 or more pairs of shoes, but requires approx. 0.6 sq. m area. With minimal ergonomics, this rack needs a dressing room from 6 sq. m. The rack does not have a back wall, it is attached to the wall with steel corners and 6x70 self-tapping screws in plastic dowels. The material of the shelves and walls is a board or chipboard 20 mm and a bar 30x30 mm. Shelves, for better ventilation, made of steel mesh on wooden frames.

Note: This rack is versatile. High and low sections can be added to it in width and height without restrictions, as long as there is a hawtalo space. Due to the dispersion of the fasteners, the wall behind the rack can be weak, e.g. partition of foam concrete or aerated concrete blocks.

The shoe cabinet is more compact and fits in an aisle with a width of 1.5 m. The length of the cabinet is up to 2 m. The shelves are of the same design as in the previous one. case; fastened to the sidewalls with dowels, corners, in milled grooves or on ordinary shelf supports. The back wall is ventilated, like a petal shoe rack (see above). A variant with ventilation almost like a rack - a pedestal without a back wall with a gap between the pedestal and the wall from 40 mm (to the width of the floor plinth). Then the assembly of the pedestal according to the scheme at the bottom right in fig. Overlays at the back - from the same board as the shelves with partitions.

Organizers

But what if there is no place under the shoe cabinet anywhere? In this case, an organizer for long-term storage of shoes that are not currently worn will help out. True, in furniture stores you will most likely be offered a special shoe closet organizer (item 1 in the figure), which will take, with the doors wide open, somewhere from 2 sq. m. But in haberdashery and clothing stores you can find an incomparably cheaper shoe organizer suitcase made of fabric, pos. 2 fits under the bed. In addition, the shoes breathe freely in it.

But you can not buy an organizer-suitcase if there are enough shoe boxes. They are simply glued together, pos. 3. It is not more difficult for shoes to breathe in such an organizer, and it is easier to push it into the niche of the bed drawer. The soft organizer-suitcase in this case often gets stuck.

Shoe organizer made of cardboard can also be glued, for example. to the cottage, pos. 4. Decorated with fiction, it can be quite in place and in the apartment, if there is a suitable niche in the hallway, pos. 5. Then the shoebox made of cardboard in the niche should be placed in a spacer so that the sides of the niche give rigidity to the entire product. For the same purpose, cardboard blanks are impregnated 2-3 times on both sides with a water-polymer emulsion or PVA diluted 2-3 times with water.

About dryers and dryers

Soaked shoes should be dried before being placed in a shoe rack or storage. But - do not buy electric dryers for shoes at home (see the figure)! Their purpose is to quickly dry work shoes on business trips, field or expeditionary conditions, when you need to step in for a shift or, say, go to measurements minute by minute, and the cost of work shoes is pre-inscribed in the estimate or current expenses.

Casual shoes cannot be dried from the inside, otherwise, even in expensive branded products, the top may crack or the sole peel off before the expiration of the warranty period. Experts in company stores in such cases immediately determine - sorry, the case is not guaranteed. Here is a guide with pictures. Did you dry them the way it says here?

Casual shoes should be dried either in an inclined toe-down position (pos. 1 in the figure below), or, better, in the air (but not by the laces or on pins / paws!) Pos. 2 and 3, or, even better, from the side of the sole, pos. 4. Stylish dryer-organizer for shoes on pos. 2 is technologically not that complicated if you know how to handle sheet plastics or stainless metals.

However, the absorption dryer at pos. 4: completely wet boots dry in it in 2-4 hours with room temperature! As you know, the faster wet shoes dry without additional heating, the longer they last.

The secret of absorption drying shoes is in the stone filling and neatness: before putting the shoes to dry, they must be washed. Crushed stone for an absorption dryer needs dolomite or others from a sufficiently strong and chemically inactive stone with its own moisture absorption more. Activated charcoal (not pharmaceutical tablets!) or silica gel dry shoes even faster, but drying them later is no easier than restoring a box of an old charcoal gas mask. The best backfill for an absorption shoe dryer is seashell or rounded sea pebbles. The service life of winter and work shoes, if kept on such a backfill for the whole season, in addition to the time of use, almost doubles.

Taking care of a heap of shoes is problematic. So that the shoes do not get dirty, do not suffer from dampness and dust, you need to install. The easiest way is to purchase a ready-made solution, but this is not always possible.

Here we will consider an alternative route - making is not easy, but shoe racks with our own hands. We have to pick up tools and materials, determine the size and internal structure. At the end you will find diagrams, drawings and photographs.

The amount of material and a set of tools will depend on the chosen design. To make a wooden cabinet, you will need the following tools:

  • drills (confirmed, 5 or 8 millimeters);
  • tape measure (gon, ruler) and pencil;
  • a hammer;
  • screwdriver (can be replaced with a drill);
  • 4 mm hex key;
  • awl;
  • Forstner drill;
  • template (its task is to mark up for drilling).

Of course, if you are going to make a cardboard shoe rack, the set will be different. But more on that later.

Do you want a more durable and cheaper shoe rack? Use chipboard sheets as material. In addition, you will need accessories:

  • pens;
  • euro screws;
  • shoe rack mechanism (if any);
  • screws;
  • decorative supports (you can do without them, but with supports the structure will look more solid).

For the carousel shelf, you will need metal pins (round shelves are attached to them) and a vertical pin. You don't need any special tools other than a drill. The full list of materials for the "carousel" looks like this:

  • round pins (holders);
  • disks from fiberboard;
  • plastic tips;
  • steel tube;
  • metal corners;
  • screws (plus lock washers to them);
  • half a liter of primer;
  • machine screws (together with nuts and washers);
  • acrylic paint.

More comfortable solutions are also possible (along with leather upholstery). Read about it below, as well as about the sizes of DIY shoe racks.

Product dimensions

The dimensions of the product depend on the area of \u200b\u200bthe hallway and the needs of the owner. Lonely people will have enough of a small locker, attached to, and a family of 3-4 people needs a full-fledged shoe rack, designed for 20-30 pairs. Shop models often turn out to be made in China, whose inhabitants have a strange penchant for miniaturization.

Shoe cases can be wide. It’s hard to make a cabinet or make it yourself, so it’s better to limit yourself to a simple cabinet. The product requirements are:

  • functionality;
  • ergonomics;
  • good ventilation;
  • aesthetics;
  • spaciousness.

For a minimalist shoe-dryer, you do not need to allocate a lot of space. Quite small-sized and unpretentious wall model. Options can be:

  • facades (shaped boards MDF or DIRECT chipboard) - 119.5x44.7 centimeters;
  • sidewalls (standard furniture panels) - 118.4x32 centimeters;
  • back wall (thin hardboard) - 119.5x89.5 cm;
  • drawers (can be purchased at furniture stores) - 86.8x10.

There are also more compact solutions. Most of them are mounted on the wall of the hallway or placed inside the closet ("carousel"). The dimensions of such structures are much smaller.

To choose the perfect option for your hallway, we recommend using special design programs - you can download and install them on your computer. There are also ready-made projects, including diagrams, drawings and detailed tables with lists of parts.

How to make your own shoe rack

There are different types of homemade shoe designs that allow you to optimize the hallway space. Some of the solutions are quite complex - for example, a carousel shoe rack. We will not follow the path of complication and will deal with the simplest schemes of shoe cabinets made of cardboard and wood.

Let's consider an example of manual assembly of a narrow shoe rack for a bachelor's apartment. This design is designed for a small number of shoe pairs, and during assembly you will need a drill, a hacksaw and a screwdriver. Here is a list of materials you will need:

  • moisture resistant plywood (five sheets of 12 mm thickness);
  • long shoe brushes (the number depends on the length of the shoe, the bristles must be stiff);
  • wood screws;
  • spikes (6 pieces of 6 mm each);
  • acrylic paint;
  • building glue (for wood);
  • brush;
  • transparent moisture resistant varnish;
  • dowels.

The shelf can be painted with gouache or acrylic - this is not essential. The brushes here act as shoe holders. The assembly order is as follows:

  1. A block with brushes is assembled. Through holes are drilled in the plywood edge (6 pieces).
  2. Spread the spikes with glue and insert into the resulting holes.
  3. Similar "holes" are made in plywood C, which is connected to sheet B. You can press the parts with clamps - then the glue will grab faster.
  4. Element D is attached to an existing structure.
  5. Handles are sawn off from the brushes (you can buy brushes without handles - it will be cheaper).
  6. A pair of through holes are drilled in the brushes, after which they are attached along the entire length of the structure (a centimeter from the edge) using short self-tapping screws.
  7. Unused parts A and E are drilled.
  8. All fragments of the shelf are fastened with self-tapping screws.
  9. The penultimate touch is the painting of the shoe rack. Small family members can be involved in the process. Decoupage and other creative experiments are welcome.
  10. The hallway wall is being drilled. Dowels are placed, the shelf is suspended.

We have also prepared for you some useful videos that will teach you how to create shoe racks with your own hands.

Narrow shoe racks - the best solution for small hallways? If you don't believe me, watch the following video:

The following video will also tell you how to assemble a shoe rack with your own hands:

Do you want a shoe rack for more comfortable taking off your boots? Then the following video will definitely come in handy for you:

From cardboard, you can create hanging and floor shoes with your own hands. The hanging shelf is made of thick, high-strength cardboard; demi-season shoe pairs can be stored in it. You will need an unnecessary box (it’s easy to beg for this in stores) and other things:

  • furniture knife (can be replaced with large scissors);
  • wood glue;
  • large adhesive tape;
  • Ruler and pencil;
  • stapler (staples to it should be large in size).

The cardboard is laid out on a flat surface, after which you divide it (with a pencil) into several rectangular sections. The height will be 30 centimeters, and the length is comparable to the width of the cardboard. The rectangle is divided in half and bent - the side walls must be scored with equal triangles (the vertices will look down).

By bending the rectangles, you form drawers. Glue their edges with tape - in order to protect against moisture. The drawers are inserted into the grooves of the "neighbors" and fixed with wood glue - this is how you get a single structure. Attach hooks on top and fix the product on the wall.

The floor shoe rack is formed in a similar way, but it is not attached to the wall.

The downside of this solution is its extreme instability. Cardboard is a lightweight material, so floor shoes can be knocked over by hitting the edge of the coat.

Shoe box made of cardboard

from wood

Using wood and metal slats as the main components, you can build a fairly stable shoe that takes its place in the hallway. You can save money by replacing the tree with chipboard or fiberboard. The thickness of the sheets should be about one and a half centimeters.

You will also need special slats made of stainless steel. The shape of the bars is cylindrical. In total, you need to get eight of these parts.

Please note: the cross-sectional diameter of the slats is equal to two centimeters. Fasteners and clamps will also come in handy (flanges and screws). And here is a list of DIY tools:

  • pencil and ruler;
  • screwdriver;
  • Sander;
  • jigsaw;
  • nails;
  • compass;
  • a hammer.

So, how to make a wooden shoe cabinet with your own hands? The process begins with cutting out the back and side walls. Usually the height of the shoe rack is arbitrary, and the width is 23 centimeters. This will allow you to make a two-tier shoe rack.

The back wall is cut out at the very beginning - it will consist of a pair of thin planks. The width of the shelf should be 20 centimeters. After cutting out the fragment with a jigsaw, it is necessary to sand the edges and take care of the side walls.

First you need to mark a couple of rectangles of the same type. With a pencil, compass and ruler, mark the front roundings. Roundings are cut with a jigsaw, then the walls are ground and fastened into a single section.

The final assembly of the shoe rack with your own hands. Here is the procedure:

  1. Flange attachment points are marked.
  2. By means of planks, the side walls are fastened together.
  3. The back walls are nailed to the reverse side (end) of the sidewalls.

If desired, the scheme can be complicated. As an option, replace chipboard with wood and upholster the upper part with leather.

Often, in the process of designing and arranging various premises, people face certain difficulties, since it is not possible to choose the optimal furniture for the chosen style. In this case, the independent production of various interior items is considered an excellent solution. In the hallway, there may be limited space and unusual shapes of the room, so a do-it-yourself cabinet for shoes is created, which is perfect for the area chosen for it.

Initially, you should decide what material will be used for work, as well as what shape and size the future design will have. The most commonly used materials for these purposes are:

  • MDF, which allows you to get environmentally friendly, reliable, inexpensive and resistant to various influences structures;
  • Chipboard is the most accessible material, but it is important to make sure that it does not contain formaldehydes, and also, due to the fragility of the material, it should be handled carefully so as not to damage it;
  • plywood has good quality and durability, therefore it is quite often used to create various interior items, but when using it, you need to pay attention and spend money on finishing the created structures;
  • natural wood is considered an ideal solution for making DIY shoe cabinets, as it is environmentally friendly, beautiful and reliable.

If it is not possible to spend a lot of money on the cabinet, then chipboard is selected. If you choose high-quality material, then it will be strong enough and reliable, and with proper care it will last a long time. It is incredibly easy to work with, so the process of creating a structure does not require significant effort, and you do not need to have any specific skills or use unusual tools.

After choosing the material, the preparation of all the elements that will be used in the process of work begins, these include:

  • chipboard itself, and plates are produced in numerous colors, which makes it possible to create a design for shoes in the hallway, which has an optimal shade;
  • fittings designed to open doors, if it is intended to create a closed piece of furniture;
  • tools, which include a screwdriver and a screwdriver, a bit for self-tapping screws and confirmations, as well as an awl and a drill for confirmations.

Most often, slabs of two different colors are chosen for this design - wenge and a light shade, since this combination provides a really attractive bedside table that fits well into different interiors. No complicated and unusual tools are required for the job, as the shoe cabinet is considered easy to create, so no specific fasteners or complex connections are used.

Detailing

This process involves the exact determination of the dimensions of all the details that will be needed in the process of forming this piece of furniture. Detailing makes it possible to end up with a really high-quality design, in which all parts have the right dimensions, and there are no distortions or other shortcomings.

The main details of the future bedside table include:

  • roof and bottom of the product - 1100 * 250 mm;
  • sidewall and inner standing part - 2 parts from chipboard 668 * 250 mm;
  • internal shelves, located horizontally - 3 parts 526 * 250 mm in size;
  • facades - 2 parts 311x518 mm;
  • partitions for a shoe cabinet located inside the structure - 4 parts with a size of 510x135 mm, 4 parts - 510x85 mm and 4 parts - 510x140 mm;
  • back wall - 1 piece measuring 696x1096 mm.

When using such parts, it is ensured that a pedestal, sufficiently voluminous and convenient for use, is equipped with 4 sets of overshoes, handles and thrust bearings.

Part preparation

As soon as all the necessary drawings are made, on the basis of which the process of creating a structure is carried out, and detailing is completed, you can begin to prepare the parts. This process is considered not too complicated, so it is easy for beginners to perform.

A special scheme of the future bedside table must first be made, since it must be used when forming various parts, otherwise it is likely that there will be various irregularities or other problems in the design.

How to make details? The procedure for their creation is divided into stages:

  • a large drawing paper is being prepared, onto which the drawings are transferred, so optimal patterns will be obtained;
  • they are carefully cut out, after which they are applied to chipboard sheets;
  • paper is securely fixed to the plates;
  • the cutting of parts begins, and for this you can use a jigsaw, a special wood knife or other tool.

Particularly much attention should be paid to the evenness of the parts being cut out, otherwise the resulting structure will not have perfect evenness.

Another significant point is the edging of parts. You can perform this process with an edge made of paper or plastic. Since all actions are performed at home, a paper edge is usually used. This is due to the fact that when using a plastic product, a specialized machine and expensive professional glue is required, which heats up to a high temperature before use, which guarantees excellent adhesion between the cabinet parts. Therefore, people who are independently engaged in this work choose paper edges. It is desirable to perform lining with a sufficiently thick edge, the thickness of which will not be less than 2 mm, so that the shoe cabinet will not only be beautiful, but also resistant to various influences.

Parts are pre-sanded

The edge is attached with an iron

All necessary holes are prepared in advance

Assembly

As soon as all the details necessary to create a pedestal in the hallway with your own hands are prepared, you can start connecting them, which guarantees the assembly of the structure. During the assembly process, you should constantly focus on pre-made drawings, as well as check, as certain parts are often created incorrectly, so they need to be adjusted.

To assemble a bedside table correctly, the correct sequence of actions to complete this process is taken into account:

  • first, the frame of the future structure is assembled, for which 4 main parts are used, and these include the bottom and cover, as well as two sidewalls;
  • confirmations are usually used to assemble the box, since all the same, different plugs from them will not be visible, and minifixes or furniture corners of suitable size are often used for these purposes;
  • after receiving a reliable box, the installation of internal elements begins, and they are fixed to the sidewalls and the bottom with the help of confirmations, but they are attached to each other and to the roof using metal corners;
  • then the back wall of the structure is mounted, and usually it is completely created from thin fiberboard, since it will not be affected by significant loads, and it will not be used for any purpose, therefore it acts only as a decorative element.

When attaching the back wall, you can check the evenness of the resulting product, since if there are any distortions, they will be immediately clearly visible, and if they are detected, it is recommended to redo the product.

Thus, assembling a chest of drawers or cabinets on your own is quite simple. Photos of various such home-made structures are presented below, and each owner of residential real estate has the opportunity to realize their own unique ideas, so an original and unique product will be obtained that is perfect for a particular corridor.

Why is it more practical to do it yourself

It is always easier for a non-professional to buy a shoe locker than to make it. However, there are a number of nuances:

  1. First, the range of inexpensive shelves is often scarce.
  2. Secondly, the sizes of shelves in stores do not correspond to a rational calculation. The foot of the average resident of the CIS is still much larger than the Chinese, who supply most of the inexpensive furniture, suggest.
  3. In addition, the height of the shelves is almost always the same. This is not entirely logical, since in winter people wear boots with high tops.

It is better to have one shelf with a higher height or hooks on the sides of the shelf to adjust the height yourself depending on the season.

What to consider when choosing materials and components

Is it difficult to make a standard shoe cabinet? The obvious answer is no, it's not difficult. It is necessary to take into account a number of nuances before completing the drawings, purchasing material and starting assembly.

Let's look at the most important details of your future shoe locker:

Note: buying one standard sheet of chipboard and sawing it as a result is more expensive than ordering in a furniture store / production exactly the number of parts and the dimensions that you provide in the drawings.

  • shelves do not have to be made of wood. Take a closer look at the type of shelves on the dish dryer. Lattice metal shelves - this is the best option;
  • chipboard - a material that combines cheapness and functionality. Laminated sheets are sold in many furniture stores and small industries;
  • the back wall of the cabinet can be made of hardboard - pressed cardboard, which is often used in furniture production.

Designer's Notes

In order for the design of the locker to be practical, you need to take into account the features of storing shoes and correctly calculate the dimensions of the shelves:

  • the bottom of the cabinet should not be covered by anything, otherwise water will collect inside;
  • shoes need ventilation. This may be several holes in the sidewalls, if the cabinet is planned to be closed (with doors);
  • the depth of the shelves should correspond to the length of the box from the largest pair of shoes in the house.

How to calculate cabinet dimensions

Shoe cabinet sketch

Provided that the largest pair of shoes in the house is 42 sizes, i.e. 27 cm long, the shelf should have a “depth” with a margin - say, 28 cm.

Depending on the size of the shoes, the size must be varied. The large side of the shelf depends on the number of pairs of shoes that need to be put:

  • collect all the shoes that you plan to put in the locker and measure how much space it takes in a row;
  • consider the designed number of shelves (3 or 4);
  • put a small margin in the width of the shelf.

Chipboard thickness - 16 mm. Accordingly, the outer width of the cabinet will be 32 mm larger than the width of the shelf.

What will you need

It is worth noting that the sizes below are calculated based on the fact that the maximum shoe size is 42nd.

External dimensions of the cabinet: height - 1200 mm, length (depth) - 320 mm, and width - 900 mm. It is necessary to choose sizes so that they are close to the dimensions of standard parts that are in every furniture store.

In this case, the set of necessary parts is as follows:

    • 4 lattice or chipboard (to your taste) shelves 864 mm wide and 280 mm deep;
    • top cover standard size 900 by 320 mm;
    • side walls with a height of 1184 (taking into account the thickness of the top cover of 16 mm, the height of the cabinet will be) and a length (“depth”) of 320 mm;
      frames (small parts made of chipboard) with a height of 100 mm and a width of 868 mm for fastening the structure at the back and front, called drawers;

Helpful advice: a rope can be pulled over the last shelf in order to fasten the tops of the boots with the help of small clothespins: this way they will not break.

  • figured facades (improvised doors) made of MDF with a height of 1195 mm and a width of 447 mm (2 doors plus a margin of 4 mm for easy opening);
  • fiberboard sheet with a height of 1195 mm and a width of 895 mm for the manufacture of the rear wall;
  • 4 hinges for furniture;
  • 2 door handles;
  • 8 confirmations (5 by 70 mm). Confirmat - a special furniture screw for fastening cabinet elements;
  • self-tapping screws 16 by 4 mm - it is better to take with a margin, a few dozen;
  • adjustable shelf holders: 4 for each shelf.

Connection technology

The shoe cabinet is assembled in the following order:

  1. Holes in the side walls for inserting confirmations must be made with a diameter of about 8 mm, and at the ends of the tsarg frames - with a diameter of 5 mm. Drilling depth - half the length of the furniture screw.
  2. The rigidity of the locker will give metal corners. They will also be needed if you will attach the finished structure to the wall.
  3. Hinges for facades, corners, the back wall must be fixed with self-tapping screws.
  4. Attach shelf holders, handles for facades and hang shelves.
  5. You can put the locker on the floor so you can sit on it when you put on your shoes, but it's better to hang it up and find another use for the countertop.

Helpful advice: if everything is in order with ventilation, then it will be dry enough in the locker and you can also hide the Internet connection in it. Then a Wi-Fi router will stand on top of the tabletop.

If you spend some time designing and creating drawings, then your locker will turn out to be much more practical and cheaper than the products of Chinese craftsmen.

Evening shoes, comfortable sandals, stylish boots... There comes a time in any family when there are so many shoes that the question of proper storage arises. In most cases, modern apartments are not so large that you can allocate a lot of storage space in them. A shoe rack would be a great choice. It will save space and time: now all the shoes are neatly laid out, you won’t have to look for them for a long time, and it will be much easier to take care of them. The problem can arise with standard furniture, which does not always fit in small-sized housing. This can happen with shoes too. But for someone who loves tinkering, it will not take much time to make it, put it in the very room where the shoe rack asks for - in the hallway, decorate it with your own hands and fill it with your favorite shoes and boots.

Shoe rack is perfect for small apartments.

There are many models of shoe racks with vertical, horizontal or inclined shelves. It can be a hybrid of shelves and benches or a cabinet with sliding, folding, hinged doors or without them at all. Consider how to make two types of shoe racks. One of them will have drawers and a shelf. The other is hinged doors with special guides, the so-called galoshes.

Instructions for assembling a shoe rack with your own hands

A chipboard shoe rack with drawers and a shelf is assembled in stages.

Mark and drill holes for all parts using a jig and tape measure:

  1. To fasten the sidewalls, measure along the edges of the bottom panel a distance equal to 1/2 of the thickness of the parts. For example, for a 16mm chipboard, you need to make two holes at a distance of 8mm from the edge. In this case, the indent from the rear wall will be 50 and 250 mm.
  2. To fasten the internal rack from the edge of the bottom panel, set aside a distance equal to the sum of one and a half thickness of the chipboard and the width of the shelf. With a thickness of 16 mm and a shelf width of 310 mm: 16x1.5 + 310 = 334 mm.
  3. Make holes for shelves. To find the right place, we make a calculation: subtract the thickness of all shelves from the height of the rack and divide by their number plus one. Increase by the radius of the shelf support. We get the distance to the hole for the top shelf.

For ease of calculation, let the height of the rack be 600 mm. We are planning one shelf. Its thickness is 16 mm. Holder diameter 6 mm.

Settlement procedure:

  • 600-16=584
  • 584/(1+1)=292
  • 292+16+3=311

The hole should be drilled at a distance of 311 mm from the top panel.

  1. Calculate and mark holes for guides for all drawers.
  2. Fasten the frame parts to each other on confirmations. Install the roof with corners.
  3. Install drawer guides.
  4. Put the shelf supports, fixing them first with glue, then with a hammer.
  5. Assemble boxes from previously prepared parts.
  6. Insert the boxes into the shoe rack.
  7. Hang doors.
  8. Screw on the handles.

Necessary materials and tools

For a shoe rack with a galoshnit mechanism, you will need the following.

Shoe cabinet with a mechanism of the "kaloshnitsa" type in black.

Main materials:

  • Chipboard boards 16 mm thick;

Laminated panels with a thickness of 16 mm.

  • Chipboard boards 10 mm thick;

Wooden boards chipboard with a thickness of 10 mm.

  • Hardboard sheet or fiberboard - for the back wall.

Hardboard sheet for the back wall of the shoe rack.

High density fibreboard sheet.

Tools and consumables for them:

  • Roulette, square;
  • A hammer;
  • Screwdriver;
  • Awl;
  • Screwdriver;
  • Conductor;
  • Bits for confirmations.

Immediately you need to prepare furniture fittings:

  • Special guides for shelves for shoes, the so-called galoshes (a set of two pieces for each door);
  • Thrust bearings;
  • Metal corners;
  • Furniture handles;
  • Self-tapping screws, confirmations, minifixes.

Procurement of parts

Having decided on a place for a shoe rack, it is necessary to make careful measurements. Next, you need to draw up a drawing indicating all the dimensions. As a result, a list of necessary parts will appear: shelves, racks, cabinet doors.

It is better to order a cut of all these blanks in a specialized store or furniture workshop. Such a service is also good because the output is parts with already glued edges. It is important to take this into account when working with chipboard, since this material contains volatile compounds, which, if the top layer is violated, can be harmful to health.

The shoe rack is assembled from the following parts (their specific dimensions are determined by the drawing):

From chipboard boards 16 mm thick:

  • Roof and bottom of the frame - 2 pieces;
  • Side parts and internal rack - 3 pieces;
  • Internal cabinet shelves - 2 pieces;
  • Facades - 4 pieces.

From chipboard boards 12 mm thick:

  • Shelves of galoshes of three types - sizes differ in depth, are calculated based on the design of the guides, 4 pieces of each type;
  • The back wall of the cabinet - 1 pc.

Important! To draw up the detailing of the drawing, dimensions must be applied taking into account gaps and indents. Also, for free opening of the cabinet, the gap at the facade from below must be at least 7 mm.

Staged assembly

  1. Make a markup based on the drawing.
  2. Drill holes on all parts.
  3. Assemble the frame from four parts (two sidewalls, roof, bottom), using confirmations. You can choose other options for connecting parts - for example, on corners or on minifixes.
  4. The internal parts of the frame - the shelves and the rack - are attached to the confirmations to the sidewalls, and to the roof and to each other - to the metal corners.
  5. Install the back wall of the shoe rack.
  6. To install galoshes on the side parts of the frame, make markings for the attachment points of the axis of rotation and the stop pin. When installing galoshes, you should focus on the installation diagram that comes with the kit.
  7. Attach the galoshes to the sidewalls with self-tapping screws.
  8. Connect the mechanisms with the shelves of the galoshes with self-tapping screws.
  9. Hang facades. You can use a simple method of attaching them: first stick double-sided tape on the shoe, attach the facade, press it, and only then screw it on.
  10. Attach handles.
  11. Install pedestals.

decoration

A handmade shoe rack will in itself bring the spirit of creativity into the hallway. Decorating can not only give it a complete look, but also turn it into a real work of art. So a simple closet will become an accent that your hallway lacked.

  • Having picked up interesting handles, you can change the mood, give the shoe a certain style;
  • On the top panel, you can lay out patchwork-style ceramic tiles, mosaic panels;
  • Facades can be easily transformed by pasting wallpaper, fabric, mirror tiles, painting. They can also be painted by hand or stenciled;
  • It is quite possible to change the appearance of a shoe rack beyond recognition using decoupage and other techniques, decorating it, for example, under concrete or marble;
  • The now popular direction of “aging” furniture will help to give it chic and antique mystery.

Only your own imagination can limit you here!

Accommodation in the hallway

As soon as the idea comes to make a shoe rack with your own hands, in order to place it in the hallway, you need to think carefully. With obvious advantages, this furniture can also cause inconvenience. To avoid them, it is better to foresee them in advance.

It should be noted that opening doors should not impede movement, and the cabinet itself should not clutter up the space. The shoe rack should be placed in such a way that, without moving far from it, you can sit down and put on shoes. Care products, a shoehorn, and other little things should always be at hand.

It’s good if there is a “dirty” zone in the hallway in which the process of putting on and taking off street shoes takes place. The main routes of movement of households do not pass through it (there are no doors to the bathroom and other rooms). Try to put a shoe cabinet here.

If all the nuances are taken into account at the design stage, the shoe rack will easily fit into the existing interior and will look harmonious in it.

  1. When making a shoe rack with your own hands, start with detailed measurements of the room. The more carefully you do this, the more accurate the drawing will turn out. Agree, it will be a shame if the finished cabinet blocks the switch or the existing outlet by a couple of centimeters.
  2. When drawing up a drawing, consider the types of shoes you are going to store and their quantity. This will help to correctly calculate how many shelves you need, at what height to install them.
  3. Designing will help simplify graphics programs for designers. It's easy enough to master them. They allow you to quickly draw up a drawing and even make a 3D visualization. If you are not going to stop at a shoemaker, pay attention to this opportunity to facilitate and speed up the process of making furniture.
  4. When choosing legs for a shoe rack, stop at those that are adjustable in height. They are convenient to use. Such fittings will help to level the height of the cabinet, correcting possible errors in the project or uneven floors, which is far from uncommon.

Having carefully thought through everything and studied the advice of professionals, you will certainly make the shoe of your dreams, practical and beautiful.
