Peony Garden Treasure (Yellow Treasure): photo and variety description, reviews. Peonies Ito hybrids: description of varieties, planting and care Peony garden treasure

Peonies are considered a symbol of wealth and prosperity. Large buds of saturated shades cannot but attract attention. They are easy to grow and care for, even a novice gardener can easily handle them. Perennials grow every year in the same place, they do not need to be transplanted. Today, about five thousand varieties of this plant are registered, one of which is Garden Treasure. Consider the description of this peony and the rules for planting and caring for it.

Description

Variety "Garden Treasure" refers to Ito hybrids obtained by crossing herbaceous and tree peonies. Such hybrids have many advantages. The richness and diversity of the palette is amazing, there are varieties of pink, white, purple, canary, coral and other shades. In some varieties, several tones are combined at once. Another advantage of hybrid plants is long flowering and a large number of buds located on one bush.

Peonies of the "Garden Treasure" variety, which means "garden treasure" in English, are the owners of a large number of awards and prizes. The canary tone, thickening towards the middle of the bud, looks unusually gentle. The height of the stems can reach 120 centimeters, the width of the bushes sometimes reaches one and a half meters, these facts must be remembered when planting.

If you manage to purchase several bushes of this variety at once, your garden will turn into a real paradise during flowering. On each plant, about forty buds will open at the same time and fill the area with aroma and beauty.

At the same time, "Garden Treasure" is resistant to adverse conditions and can withstand frosts down to -40 degrees.

cultivation

The growing process is divided into several stages.

Site selection

First of all, when planting peonies, it is necessary to correctly select a site. The correct choice depends on how quickly the bushes grow and what they will be. "Garden Treasure" needs sunlight, so the growing area should be open.

Trees with a wide crown, dense shrubs and buildings should be as far away as possible, as they can disrupt air circulation and shade the site. In this case, the plants will grow, but will not bloom.

Pay attention to the level of groundwater. In the case of their close standing, you will have to abandon the Garden Treasure planting in this place, as the root system will begin to rot and the plant will die, and your strength will be wasted.

Soil preparation

Peonies should be planted only in fertile or well-fertilized soil. The quality of the soil determines the splendor of flowers, their number and aroma, which will fill the site. The most favorable soil for these plants will be cultivated soil with low acidity. If there is a lot of sand in the ground, add one and a half buckets of clay, if the soil, on the contrary, is slightly clayey, dilute it with sand.

Acidic soil can be improved with lime by adding 200-400 grams per bush.

Landing

Plants should be planted in the fall. In early August, you need to start the process of preparing the site. In order for peonies to grow well, it is recommended to plant them in small pits with fertilizers, the size of which should be approximately 60 * 60 * 60 centimeters. They are filled with 2/3 top dressing, for this peat, humus and sand are mixed. You can supplement the mixture with a liter jar of wood ash, which will also enrich the soil.

Plants should be planted at a depth of 4-6 centimeters from the surface. Peonies bloom in the second year after planting.

If there are no buds during this period, you should not worry, pay attention to the number of stems, there should be more of them - this is the main thing. It means that Garden Treasure will delight you with its beauty next year.

They are very popular with gardeners, many of whom strive to regularly replenish their collection with wonderful varieties. And those peony lovers who, for a number of reasons, cannot afford to buy and plant a large number of peony bushes in their garden, are especially careful in choosing a variety.

Before planting in the garden, it was necessary to keep the plants cool so that the peonies would not start growing. The peonies packed in sphagnum were put away for storage in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator.
At the beginning of spring, when I needed a place in the refrigerator to store other, more tender, purchased plants, I planted the rhizomes of peonies in narrow tall containers. I put them on a glazed loggia (northern orientation), where a low positive temperature was kept.

As soon as the snow melted, and it became possible to get to the garden, in mid-April, the peonies were carefully transferred from containers to open ground. By this time, the kidneys of all delenki became much larger.

When choosing a landing site for the Garden Treasure peony and other ITO hybrids, it is important to take into account that they need to take a warm sunny corner (they have little or no flowering in the shade), protected from strong winds, without stagnant melt and rainwater, with well-drained neutral soil without the use of peat.
When planting a peony delenka, the buds should be 3-5 cm below ground level, and filled with fertile loose soil.

After planting the peonies, she watered them and then sprinkled them with garden soil; nothing else covered the top.
Rooting of all planted plants was successful.

The rapid development and flowering of the peony "Garden Treasure"

Planted in the spring, ITO hybrid peonies soon sprouted, forming several shoots with beautiful leaves.
In the first year of life, the formed young bushes of peonies of different varieties were of the same size. And in general, they did not differ from each other in any way, being in the same garden conditions and with the same care.

And suddenly I was surprised to find that one of the young peony bushes had two buds!
Of course, these buds should be removed immediately so that the plant does not waste energy on flowering, but directs them to the development of a powerful root system. But since the peony bush outwardly looked quite strong, and we really wanted to admire its first flowers, these buds were left and grew literally before our eyes. And when they turned into large beautiful flowers with an unusual color of the petals, then our delight knew no bounds!

In its third year (in 2016), the Garden Treasure peony bush became even bigger and more beautiful, and at the same time it tripled the number of flowers!
The rest of the peony bushes also successfully grew up, and many of them bloomed flowers. But the impression of their flowering was much less vivid compared to the luxurious flowers of "Garden Treasure".

In the fourth year (in 2017), the 'Garden Treasure' peony has already formed a rather large bush compared to other ITO hybrids. And again he tripled the number of flowers!
Of the other ITO hybrids growing in our garden, no other has demonstrated such a rate of growth of flowering shoots and such a generous, lovely flowering!

The flowering period of the "Garden Treasure" peony is quite long, since only 3-4 flowers are open at a time, and as they fade, they gradually bloom to replace the same number of new buds. And since the flowers of this peony are very large, the flowering bush as a whole is a wonderful sight!

The rest of the planted peonies also turned out to be spectacular in bloom, but now they are noticeably inferior to "Garden Treasure": in terms of the size of the bush, in the number of flowers formed, in the diameter and splendor of the flower, and in our emotional perception of the flowering of the plant. Although, of course, every peony flower is worthy of admiration ...

The young plant "Garden Treasure" is not yet strong enough stems, they lean under the load of blooming huge flowers. Therefore, I tie the peony flower stalks with developing buds with a wide twine so that all the flowers are above the leaves and are clearly visible from all sides.

So far, a single flower has opened on each flowering shoot of my plant (I have seen information that several buds can form on the peduncle of "Garden Treasure").
By the way, several times I tried to leave seed boxes near the Garden Treasure peony bush - in the hope of getting full-fledged seeds. But every time it turned out that the rudiments of seeds in them ceased to develop from a certain moment.

The varietal qualities of the peony are fully manifested only from the third year of life, and until this time it is better not to let the peony bloom.
Experts recommend cutting flowers for a bouquet of no more than a third of a peony bush.

During the garden season, it is necessary to protect the stems and leaves of the peony bush, on which the health of the plant and the intensity of its flowering next year depend.
Pruning herbaceous stems and peony leaves should be done late, only after severe frosts (late October-early November).
Dead leaves should not be left near the wintering rhizome of the peony, as they can be a source of dangerous spread.

In order to protect the peony rhizome buds that have come to the surface, in the spring it is recommended to lightly sprinkle them with soil, keeping them from possible frosts and hot sun. And before the autumn cold snap, be sure to spud the base of the peony bush to save the rhizome from severe frosts in snowless autumn and winter.

Planting material for ITO hybrids is expensive, and not every garden has enough space to grow several large peony bushes. And if you are planning to plant just one magnificent ITO hybrid to decorate your garden, then I advise you to choose the golden peony "Garden Treasure".

In nature, yellow grassy peonies are very rare. To decorate the gardens with unusual flowers, breeders crossed them with tree peonies for years. The Japanese scientist Toichi ITO was the first to achieve success. The resulting plants were distinguished by exceptional color, dense foliage and abundant flowering. The best varieties of ITO hybrids of peonies have become thanks to the selection work of American botanists. Flowers are easy to care for, easily propagated by dividing the bush, resistant to low temperatures.

ITO peonies: varieties

The hybrid group of peonies is a perennial with signs of herbaceous and treelike plants. Varieties, during the selection of which the tree-like peony was the basis, bloom at an earlier date. Hybrids are characterized by variable color of petals. From tree peonies, the features of which can be read here, they inherited the presence of bright spots or shading on flowers.

A great example is Lollipop. Variegated buds with a diameter of 17 cm appear on a tall, sprawling bush. The shape is semi-double. The main color is yellow, on the petals purple-violet strokes. During the flowering period, the background color changes, approaching peach and coral. At the same time, buds with different colors can be seen on the bushes. The size of the bush is 85-90 cm, the flowering period is average.

Information. ITO hybrids are the youngest varieties of peonies, the first were registered only in 1974.

Plants are endowed with signs of two species forms, their stems die off with the arrival of the cold season and resume in spring. This is the main quality, related to grassy peonies. Large, succulent, beautifully divided leaves, flower shape and lignified roots are features derived from tree-like ancestors. An interesting effect is given by the neighborhood of bushes of various types. To decorate the landscape for many years, you can choose plants from the article.

Popular varieties

Among the first registered ITO hybrids were 4 yellow varieties that are widely used in landscape design today:

  • Yellow Heaven (Yellow Haven) - semi-double yellow flower with a contrasting red spot at the base of the petal. On a compact bush, up to 50 buds bloom at the same time. Vanilla aroma.
  • Yellow Dream (Yellow Dream) - a variety of Japanese breeding with delicate lemon petals, wavy at the edges. The buds are semi-double, in the middle there are scarlet strokes. Flowering is plentiful, the stems are strong.
  • Yellow Crown (Yellow Crown or Yellow Crown) - a plant low up to 60 cm, sprawling round shape. Flowers double and semi-double. Lemon-yellow buds open slowly, with a red spot in the middle when fully opened. Bud diameter 17 cm, pleasant aroma. The flowers are often hidden among the leaves, a deficiency common to the first cultivars bred. Over time, breeders corrected it.
  • Yellow Emperor (Yellow Emperor) - semi-double or double flower, large, with a high center. Scarlet spot on small yellow petals. Bush height up to 90 cm. Resistant to frost.

Information. One of the main advantages of ITO hybrids is long flowering. It stretches up to three weeks.

Titled varieties include "Bartzella" and "Garden Treasure". They became champions of the American Peony Society and were awarded gold medals.

  • "Bartzella" (Bartzella) - one of the most popular varieties, characterized by a record flowering period (up to four weeks). Giant yellow buds reach a diameter of 25 cm. Dense green leaves turn bronze in autumn. You will find a description of an ornamental bush with bright yellow flowers in the article.
  • Garden Treasure (Garden Treasure) is a tall perennial (80-90 cm) with strong, slightly deflected stems. The buds are semi-double, bright yellow, size 20-22 cm. The scarlet spot at the base of the petal adds to its attractiveness. The leaves are large, dark green, glossy. APS Gold Medal in 1996.

Ito hybrids come in a variety of colors, rare varieties include:

  • "Dark Eyes" (Dark Eyes) - one of the darkest varieties of peonies. The color of the petals is a unique red-brown color. The stems are straight, strong, up to 90 cm. Flowers of an average diameter of 12-15 cm, semi-double. Opened buds are shaped like a bowl with golden stamens.
  • Joanna Marlen (Joanna Marlen) - semi-double perennial American breeder Anderson. The bush grows up to 60-65 cm. The uniqueness of the hybrid is in the unusual color of the petals - the outer row is lavender or pink, closer to the middle - golden yellow. The size of the bud is 10-15 cm. When ripe, the shade changes. The cost of a rare variety is 8-12 thousand rubles.

Beautiful varieties with a description:

  • Callies Memory belongs to the group of hybrids with high spreading stems (90-100 cm). The flower is semi-double, multi-row. The outer petals are large. The color is cream, with a touch of apricot, pink edging around the perimeter of the petal. At the base is a cherry smear. Kellis Memory has a pleasant aroma and is recommended for cutting.
  • Pastel Splendor (Pastel Splendor) - a powerful shrub with large flowers that have a persistent smell. The color is cream, fading to light pink, with lavender shadows along the edge of the petals. In the middle of a simple flower, cherry-purple spots.
  • Julia Rose is a sprawling ornamental perennial that requires free space to grow. Buds with a diameter of 18 cm have a characteristic feature - their color changes from cherry to pink, then becomes yellowish. On the bud, you can simultaneously observe changes in shades on different petals. The smell is very weak.

Landing and care

The new peony species prefers areas exposed to sunlight. Some shading is allowed in the middle of the day. When choosing a place, several important points are taken into account:

  • Peonies should not be planted in lowlands where water stagnates after rains and snow melt.
  • Loamy soil is preferred, with a neutral or slightly alkaline reaction.
  • There should not be trees and large bushes nearby, they will take away nutrients from the ground.

The best time to add a new bush to the garden is autumn. Planting in the spring is not recommended, but flowers can be planted in April if necessary. A pit for a seedling is prepared in advance. Its size is 70670 cm, depth is 50-60 cm. Sand, expanded clay or just bits of brick are poured into the bottom. These materials play the role of drainage, which improves the outflow of water. Under the root, a pillow is prepared from fertile loose soil with mineral fertilizers.

Mixture Ingredients:

  • humus or compost;
  • garden land;
  • superphosphate - 200 g;
  • dolomite flour 200-300 g;
  • wood ash - 250-500 g.

Having mixed all the components, they fill the hole by 2/3. Flower roots will reach for the harvested nutrients. The seedling is placed in the middle of the pit and covered with earth. It is important to know how to properly plant an ITO peony. Root buds should be 3-5 cm from the surface. The seedling is watered abundantly.

Care

Hybrid peonies are extremely resistant to freezing temperatures and do not need winter shelter. In cold regions, it is recommended to protect young plantings of the first year with moss or oak leaves. In spring, plants need good watering, fertilizing with mineral fertilizers and loosening the soil. In the first 2 years, top dressing is carried out foliarly, on the leaves. In total, the soil is fertilized 3 times during the season: in early spring, before flowering and at the end of summer. In autumn, the stems are cut like grassy peonies.

Advice. Hybrid peonies are more sensitive to the level of soil acidity, so add dolomite flour or wood ash to the soil 2 times a year.

Reproduction of hybrids occurs by division of the root. An adult plant aged 4-5 years is suitable for cutting. I propagate perennials in late August or September. The rhizome is divided into parts of the same size with roots no shorter than 15 cm and 2-3 growth buds. Before planting, the delenki are treated with a fungicide solution.

Peony Border Charm

The Ito hybrid variety Border Charm was created by American breeder Don Holinsworth in 1984. The translation of the name of the variety is quite romantic "Charm Border". Decorative perennial, 50-60 cm tall, sprawling. Buds 16 cm in size bloom on strong stems. The flower is semi-double yellow with a scarlet area at the base. The leaves are decorative, rugged, dark green, with a blue tint. ITO peony looks great among the lawn, in a bouquet or flower arrangement. The flowering period is late, the smell is weak.

Varietal characteristics are fully revealed for 2-3 years after planting. Shows resistance to frost and disease.

Peony Prairie Charm

Prairie Charm is a semi-double variety with medium-sized flowers and purple edging of green leaves. It was bred in the USA on the basis of lactiflora peonies. Petals are yellow with an extensive red stroke at the base. Peony Prairie Charm grows up to 60-70 cm, the diameter of the bushes is about a meter. Description:

  • Dark green leaves remain decorative until frost.
  • Flowering time is medium late.
  • The diameter of the buds is 15-16 cm.
  • The smell is weak.
  • Winters without shelter.

Unpretentious and beautiful ITO peonies will decorate any garden. Unusual coloration, long and abundant flowering, decorative foliage until the first frosts are arguments in favor of choosing hybrids.
