Beautiful sofas. Types of sofas and mechanisms for their transformation What types of sofas are

A cozy living room is rarely complete without upholstered furniture. To choose a product that will bring comfort and warmth, you need to know what types of sofas exist. After all, they play an important role and are a place not only for relaxation, but also for playing with children or talking with guests. Basically, the differences are in the principle of unfolding sofas, the structure and color of the upholstery and in their design.

A cozy living room is rarely complete without upholstered furniture.

Currently, a huge number of designs and types of upholstered furniture has been developed and presented for sale. In such a variety, it is difficult for people to figure out which ones are better and decide on the choice of a sofa that is right for them. Often, buyers are based on the appearance and upholstery material of the purchased piece of furniture. But these indicators are important only when it is used infrequently. If you put a beautiful leather model in your office or living room as an additional element of the interior. For the same purposes, there are monolithic sofas, that is, non-folding ones, they can often be seen in public places.

But it is a completely different matter if the purchase of a sofa is made for use for every day and preferably not for 1 year. Usually in this case it is assumed that he will be laid out daily for sleep. In order not to make a mistake with the choice, it is important to know what are the mechanisms for transforming sofas. It is necessary to find out other features of such furniture, the required dimensions of free space, ease of unfolding, the presence of a department for linen, and decide which types of sofas are better.

Currently, a huge number of designs and types of upholstered furniture have been developed and presented for sale.

All modern models can be divided according to the following criteria:

  • type of folding mechanism;
  • structural features;
  • purpose functions;
  • overall size and number of seats.

Description of types of transformation mechanisms

The mechanism for transforming folding sofas is selected depending on its strength and frequency of use. The main types of folding mechanisms for sofas can be concluded in the following list:

  • a book, this also includes “eurobook” and “click-clack”;
  • folding bed - French or American;
  • accordion;
  • roll-out mechanism;
  • scissors;
  • dolphin.

Types of book type sofa mechanisms are the most famous and common. Their reliability has been tested by time. Enhanced with new technologies and unfolding in just one motion, the click-clack sofa is easy to use even for teenagers. Usually such furniture has a drawer for folding bedding. Sofa-books are moved apart by raising the horizontal surface until it clicks, after which the back is lowered. The inconvenience of such a mechanism is that you have to move the furniture away from the wall. "Eurobook" differs only in that the seat is shifted, making room for the back, so you do not need to move the sofa.

The mechanism of transformation in the form of a clamshell resembles the object of the same name. The seat unfolds in length and rests on retractable legs. The American and French versions differ only in that the former is more durable, frequent decomposition is suitable for it.

The transformation mechanism of folding sofas is selected depending on its strength and frequency of use.

The next type is called the accordion. When laying out such a sofa, one can notice a similarity with the principle of stretching furs. Accordion sofas are durable due to their simple design and are very popular. Although they require sufficient space in front of them, they are simple and easy to use. The back of the accordion sofa combines 2/3 of the bed at once, and modern sofa designs have removable covers, which makes it easier to care for them. Other advantages of furniture with an accordion type mechanism are their compactness when assembled and the rather large size of the unfolded bed.

The roll-out mechanism is the simplest and most reliable. Under the seat is the middle part of the sleeping area, which, when unfolded, extends behind it. The disadvantages of this furniture is that during operation there is a possibility of damaging the floor, and the bed is located somewhat lower than that of other models.

Pieces of furniture with a scissors mechanism are a novelty. When transformed, such a sofa turns into a comfortable double bed with a luxurious headboard and bedside tables on the sides. The seat halves move like scissors.

The sofa dolphin consists of 2 parts. This transformation mechanism is suitable for corner structures. When unfolded, the movement of the additional element resembles the jump of a dolphin emerging from the water. Under a lateral part the box for linen is located. The sleeping place is large and has a flat surface.

Types of sofas by shape, design and purpose

The choice of a sofa is based on the personal preferences of each person. Any kind of this piece of furniture has its undeniable advantages and is able to take its rightful place in the house. Types of sofas by design differ in classic straight lines, comfortable corner, modular and island.

Straight models are classics. Their main plus is that you can choose the appropriate dimensions that correspond to the size of the room. They can be with or without armrests, transforming or stationary.

Straight models are a classic

Corner upholstered furniture has gained a certain popularity among the population. Very comfortable and functional, they can be installed in any room. When choosing such a model, the question may arise of how to disassemble a corner sofa if you need to rearrange it to the other side of the room. In such a case, many models provide the possibility of reinstalling the corner part. The sides of this sofa can be different or the same in length.

Modular furniture is made collapsible and can, like a designer, change at the request of the owner. It will eliminate the need to buy a new one in case of moving, as the modular sofa can be easily reconfigured to suit different room shapes. This is a great option for rest rooms with a home theater.

Island models are initially rounded and are designed to take place in the center of spacious rooms. They are able to form a unique interior, because they create a soft cozy island in the room. Their unusual shape is often successfully complemented by other pieces of furniture.

Sofas of various shapes can be designed for an office or a living room, a kitchen or a children's room. In different situations, you need to seriously approach the choice. For children's furniture, bright colored upholstery is needed, and an easy-to-use transformation mechanism, no sharp or protruding parts.

According to the number of seats, sofas can be compact, designed for 2-3 people, or almost gigantic, which can accommodate a large company. But large models must be bought with caution, after measuring the room and making sure that the exit or balcony door is not blocked.

Transportation principles

Upholstered furniture is very comfortable for relaxing, but it will take a lot of effort to move it. When buying a sofa or moving, transportation is an important and responsible step, so in order to avoid mistakes and keep the furniture in working order, you need to follow certain rules. A good option is to hire specialists for transportation, who will quickly and professionally deal with this. But if funds do not allow, you need to rely only on your own strength.

Narrow doorways and corridors will only allow you to carry a disassembled sofa. Therefore, it will need to be disassembled, and then assembled in a new place. For this, the assembly diagram of this model, which is always attached to the purchased furniture, is useful. But if the purchase was a long time ago, and all the instructions are lost, you will need to disassemble the sofa, marking every detail, and, if possible, photographing the process.

Carefully wrap all parts in bubble wrap and carefully place them in the trunk of your car or van. To easily transport a disassembled sofa in a spacious van, you need to secure the parts so that they cannot move around the car. After transporting and unpacking furniture, you should not postpone its assembly for a long time.

The sofa is a noticeable and impressive piece of furniture in the house, which should bring comfort and coziness.

Conclusion

When purchasing upholstered furniture, you need to pay special attention to how the sofa unfolds and what mechanism is used in it. It must match the expected load. The service life and usability of the sofa will depend on this. You should not buy upholstered furniture just because you liked the color or your friends bought the same. After all, the sofa is a noticeable and impressive piece of furniture in the house, which should bring comfort and coziness.

Attention, only TODAY!

The sofa is an integral element of the interior of any apartment. At first glance, they are all the same. However, the mechanisms for folding sofas are fundamentally different from each other. This question can play a decisive role in choosing one particular model. Therefore, it is important to understand this topic in advance, and only then go shopping.

There are three main layout options. All of them are popular and are regularly found in the furniture market. There are the following ways of folding and unfolding:

  • Withdrawable;
  • deployable;
  • Folding.

Each of them has its own characteristics. Moreover, all of them are divided into many types, differing both in folding itself and in ease of use. All these varieties you need to know in order to choose the most suitable sofa for yourself.

Withdrawable

This type is very easy to use. All you need to do is pull the loop on the front of the sofa, after which it will roll forward. The roll-out mechanism requires accuracy, but with proper operation it can last for many years. A simple classic sofa of this kind will give the owner comfort during sleep and coziness in the house, achieved due to its compactness.

Eurobook

The Eurobook type is very convenient to use. Unfolding is very easy: the front extends and the rear manually lowers.

Advantages:

  • Life time;
  • Convenient folding process;
  • Smooth surface;
  • Inner storage box.

The disadvantages include large dimensions, due to which some people may feel discomfort when sitting. In most cases, "Eurosophy" becomes a good choice.

Pantograph

"Pantograph", which is also called "Tik Tak", is still the same "Eurobook", but has some improvements. When pulled out, the front side of the sofa does not roll on the floor, but is pulled out in the form of a small semicircle.

This type of layout avoids the risk of scratching the flooring. A separate advantage is considered a flat surface for sleeping.

The third name for this unfolding is “butterfly”.

Telescope

Such a mechanism unfolds very quickly: it is enough to pull the edge of the sofa, after which all its components will alternately stretch out in the same way as a telescope.

The telescopic sofa has its advantages:

  • Sleeping height;
  • Linen compartment;
  • Compactness.

The disadvantages include a very large weight.

Conrad

The "konrad" mechanism is identical to the telescopic one. However, it is characterized by a higher bed height and increased convenience. When extending the elements, damage to the floor is excluded.

This is the most reliable mechanism, but its cost is completely unattractive.

Dolphin

In recent years, the "dolphin" has become popular. In the process of unfolding, the movements of the elements resemble a dolphin's dive. Often this type is used in corner sofas. You can also unfold it by pulling on the loop.

  • Suitable for daily use;
  • Sleeping area;
  • Ease of operation.

There are no significant downsides to this design.

Kangaroo

This transformation mechanism is almost identical to the previous one. The only difference is the increased height of the supports. Sofas with such unfolding allow you to get the most comfort from sleep.

The pros and cons come down to the increased height of the supports, which gives more convenience, but reduces the level of reliability.

Ankara

Ankar operates on the same principle as the previous two. You need to pull the seat towards you and pull out the block by pulling it up. It is distinguished by increased reliability and spaciousness of the bed.

puma

The design of the puma pull-out sofa is very simple. You just need to pull up the seat, after which the base will stretch behind it. "Puma" has a high demand in the market, thanks to the safety of the floor and convenience.

Advantages:

  • Silent folding / unfolding process;
  • Ease of use.

Corner models are supplied with a special box for things, which is located on the back.

Sedalift

Sedalift is easy to use. It is ideal for sleeping, but many models suffer from low durability. The instruction manual calls for the lower part to be rolled out, the folded fabric section to be laid out over the extended base.

  • Large bed;
  • Ease of unfolding.

Of the minuses: the risk of scratching the floor, as well as low suitability for regular sleep.

deployable

All types of unfolding are comfortable, but this one causes a special feeling for many. The reason is the elegant appearance of the furniture when folded. This type is perfectly characterized by the word "clamshell". It is also often used in Russian names of subspecies.

In the unfolded state, the sofas resemble a folding bed familiar to many. The berth rests on supports and consists of a rather thin material. It is made up of three elements. It is only necessary to pull the edge of the seat so that the transformer sofa takes on a different look, and its two additional parts stand on supports.

What are the mechanisms of sofas - video:

This fastening does not allow you to use the sofa daily. It has reduced strength, and is also not very comfortable when lying for a long time. As a rule, they are used only in assembled form, and rarely laid out.

french book

This is the main representative of such a mechanism. The French book is unfolded by stretching the main part, which leads to the displacement of the other two on the supports.

  • Express unfolding.
  • unreliability;
  • Irregularities on the surface.

It is worth acquiring it only if you have to lie on it extremely rarely. In other cases, it is better to prefer a forward-folding mechanism.

Spartacus

This subspecies was developed by the joint efforts of designers from Russia and Italy. This is the best unfolding sleep mechanism. It is a more durable French clamshell, reinforced with a metal grill.

  • Strength;
  • Comfort and suitability for daily sleep.

Of the minuses, only that the lifting mechanism requires you to remove the pillows before unfolding.

Rich

This mechanism, also called "American book", is similar to the French version. You just need to pull the seat towards you, after which everything will decompose. It differs in that it consists of two blocks, not three. It also has a thicker surface.

  • High strength;
  • Compactness.

It has another name - "sedaflex". Of the minuses, only the absence of a linen box.

As the previous version, the sofa of such a plan consists of two parts. The difference is that the transformation requires not raising the seat, but moving the back forward, turning the structure over so that the sofa rests on the legs.

  • High reliability;
  • The presence of springs.
  • High price.

The spring mechanism allows you to extract maximum comfort from the furniture.

Accordion

Another popular option resembles, in its principle of action, the musical instrument of the same name. The design stretches in the same way as accordion bellows. Gradually, the sleeping place is pulled out, leaning on the legs. It is similar in size to a large double bed.

  • Compactness;
  • Ease of lifting;
  • Reliability;
  • Department for things.
  • Risk of floor damage.

"Accordion" is very convenient to use and has an acceptable cost.

Caravan

The mechanism is based on a metal frame. Unfolds by pulling the seat up. At the same time, two platforms are pulled out under the base. After unfolding, it is comparable in size to a large bed. You can assemble a folding sofa very quickly.

Pluses in durability and simplicity. The only downside is the lack of a linen box.

Ribalto

The popular ribalto folding option is distinguished by a well-thought-out design. It attracts attention with its simplicity and convenience. The process of folding such a sofa is simple: you need to lower the back to the seat, then turn them over, laying them on the floor. This is how the bed is formed. There are models with automatic folding.

  • Quick and easy folding;
  • Space.

There are no significant disadvantages of the mechanism. Also called "slider" in the angular version.

Folding sofas

Modern folding mechanisms include a third type - folding. It is familiar to anyone who has had an ordinary inexpensive sofa. The main plus is the presence of a large size linen box.

Tango

Such a sofa is very functional, because when unfolded it is able to take several positions. It looks like a book. You need to pull the lower part, after which the back will lower.

  • Intermediate folding options;
  • Flat sleeping surface.

Of the minuses, only the inability to put the sofa close to the wall. There is also a recliner option with a retractable footrest.

Butterfly

"Butterfly" combines retractable and folding mechanisms. Allows you to fold and assemble the sofa as quickly as possible. First, the lower part is pulled out, then the upper one leans back.

  • The speed of the mechanism;
  • Bed size.

The disadvantages of a sofa of this form include the risk of damaging the rollers used when rolling out. According to the method of unfolding, the mechanism is very similar to the Eurobook.

Book

The classic mechanism for most people is a book. It is very easy to unfold and fold the sofa book. You need to fold the back back, after which it will lower, increasing the area for sleeping. This sofa consists of a metal or wooden frame.

The parameters allow you to fit inside a section for a large linen box. Other advantages include strength, simplicity and low cost.

Dominoes

The mechanism called "domino" combines rolling out, eurobook and dolphin dive. The lower part is extended, the back is folded and in the form of diving it goes down, forming a place to sleep. The characteristic of the sofa does not allow to include a department for things in the design, which makes the mechanism less attractive.

The main advantage of this triple design is the height of the bed.

Conclusion - the final choice

Apply a variety of layout mechanisms for sofas. There are no universal options. Depending on the method of operation, the size of the room and some other conditions, one or another mechanism for transforming the sofa is selected. In order not to make a mistake, you need to listen to the advice of experts. They will help you understand what factors you need to pay attention to in the first place.

When studying which sofa transformation mechanism is better, a number of recommendations should be taken into account. There is a generally accepted rule. All sofas are conditionally divided into guest types and designed for daily sleep. If the mechanism is chosen correctly, the furniture will last a long time and its operation will be comfortable.

If the sofa will be laid out often (sleeping variety), you should not purchase products with a complex layout procedure. In this case, the simpler the better. Guest sofas, on the contrary, are not designed for the daily movements of the system, so their mechanism will not be as strong as that of sleeping varieties.

Attention should also be paid to such criteria as the maximum load of the bed, the orthopedic qualities of the model, its appearance, the layout procedure, the comfort of the bed, and also the convenience in the sitting position. Therefore, the sofa transformation mechanism is an important factor influencing the choice.

Guest models

Sofas with "Clamshell" mechanism

The folding bed sofa transformation mechanism has several popular design options. The principle of transformation here is simple: the bed is located directly under the seat. For the front panel, which is located below, the seat moves forward. There is a French and American cot, their principle is very similar.

The French one is pulled out in the form of a scroll, which unfolds in 3 stages. This mechanism is compact in size, so it is built into even very sophisticated sofas. However, this model is not used on a daily basis.

The American clamshell is designed for heavy loads. This sofa is practical and durable. However, this feature significantly raises the price of this furniture. To transform the sofa, you need to lift it a little, and then pull it towards you. This type of mechanism does not harm the flooring, but it needs to be lubricated periodically to avoid squeaks.

Withdrawable mechanism

One of the best options for sleeping is a roll-out sofa. The transformation mechanism here is very simple. The berth is obtained by rolling out additional sections from under the base. Due to its simplicity, the presented mechanism is called one of the most reliable.

Another advantage of such products is the absence of requirements for the size of the room. It is installed even in small rooms. Moreover, in the unfolded state, the place to sleep will be long and even. The disadvantage of such mechanisms is the exactingness of the type of flooring. It should be strong, not sag under the weight of the sofa. In the process of transformation, the base slides on the floor. Nothing should interfere with this movement. It is better if the selected model of the presented type has rubber wheels.

Sofas with accordion mechanism

The mechanisms for transforming accordion sofas are gaining more and more popularity. It is very easy to apply in everyday life. The principle of the design device is to push the accordion. To do this, the seat is slightly raised. Next comes the click. The back of the two parts (in the normal state, it is folded with a house) is stretched. It resembles the movement of an accordion.

With the help of such a transformation, a flat surface is formed. When unfolded, the sofa looks like a regular bed. Usually "accordion" has removable covers for all soft elements. This makes the cleaning process easy. In the kit, almost all models have a linen box. In some cases, other decorative elements may be present. It is better if the basis of such furniture is a metal frame, steel frames. The mattress can be chosen orthopedic. For a small room, this option is acceptable, but you need to consider how much space the sofa will take up when disassembled. On the way of its layout there should be no extraneous things. There should be at least 0.5 m of space left to the opposite wall when the "accordion" is disassembled.

Sofas with the Dolphin mechanism

Check out the Monza sofa with the Dolphin mechanism!

The dolphin sofa transformation mechanism can also be called a kangaroo. It is most often found in sofas in the form of an angle. The front part slides out. An additional pillow is taken out of it with the help of a loop. She forms a bed. These sofas are quite large. The storage box is hidden in the corner module. The advantage of this model is a reliable and simple mechanism. This is an option for daily sleep. It is able to withstand heavy loads (about 200 kg). When laid out, an additional part of the structure takes up a minimum of space in the room. It should also be noted that the bed is spacious and has a fairly high rise above the floor level. The cost of the presented furniture is relatively low. This makes the "dolphin" very popular.

Swivel mechanism

One of the most modern is considered a corner sofa with a swivel transformation mechanism. It works very simply. One half of the furniture is rolled to the side 90º, and then it must be rolled to the other part of the sofa. It does not require the use of significant physical force. All movements are smooth. After the transformation is completed, the turning part is fixed. This creates a comfortable and spacious bed. The simplicity of the design makes the mechanism durable. It is possible to use orthopedic sofas for sleeping. It comes with a spacious bottom drawer for storage. On sale, such varieties of sofas are still quite rare. Their prices are above average. Therefore, if you want to purchase an easy-to-use, reliable and modern sofa, which is the corner swivel mechanism, you will have to spend some time looking for a responsible, trusted supplier.

The sofa is the most used element of the interior. It is often used for several purposes at once - for sitting, relaxing or sleeping. Therefore, when choosing furniture, it is necessary to take into account not only the appearance, but also the varieties of sofas: classification, technical characteristics. This will help you choose a visually beautiful model that will complement the interior, but at the same time allow you to rationally use the space of the room.

What are there?

There is no strict classification of sofas, but there are generally accepted standards and terms. When choosing a sofa, as a rule, take into account its design indicators, functional features and spaciousness. Characteristics can be selected in a separate list and rely on when choosing your individual model, which will be especially important if the furniture is made to order.

By shape

It is recommended to choose a sofa of such a shape or design that it does not take up extra space in the room. This element of furniture should be located so as to fill the unused area of the room, and the aisles or, for example, the play area in the children's room, should be free. By design, sofas are conditionally divided into four types.

  • Corner. Such models successfully occupy unused corner niches, straight backs can be leaned against the walls. The corner shape is great for small, one-room apartments, small kitchens. In rooms with a large area, the corner design allows you to zone the space.

  • Direct or stationary- the most popular form of furniture due to the many placement options. Straight sofas are conveniently installed along the walls, in the center and corners of the room, small compact models can be easily moved around the room. Most straight sofas are folding or pull-out. Installed in the center of the room near the wall, if necessary, they can serve as a full-fledged double bed.

  • Modular sofas- the most mobile and multifunctional type of furniture, their design consists of several parts that can be used both together and separately. If necessary, the parts are combined in a different order, for example, a large corner sofa is disassembled into two straight lines or small separate modules are used as ottomans.

  • Island- these models are less popular in comparison with previous forms, since they mainly involve installation in large rooms. Made in the form of islands, they are installed in the same way - in the middle of the room, or in the corner in case of zoning the area. Island models occupy a lot of usable space, but they look presentable and help to implement bold design solutions.

When choosing the shape of furniture, it is important not to forget about its volume, the total area that it will occupy.

The sofa in the hall or in the kitchen should not be too wide; in these rooms it is better to leave more space for movement. In apartments where a folding sofa is planned to be used as a sleeping place, models with a wide seat are suitable, but for rest rooms they often choose designs not only with a wide, but also with a deep seat.

By appointment

The shape and design of the sofa is also selected taking into account the purpose of the furniture, the choice of material for manufacturing, as well as the total cost of the future product, will depend on this indicator. For example, models with inexpensive upholstery are suitable for the kitchen; for sleeping places, it is advisable to order sofas made from natural materials; in work or office premises, leather-covered products are more practical. By appointment, this element of upholstered furniture is classified into five types:

  • office, for working rooms;
  • for the hall, living rooms;
  • for kitchens and dining rooms;
  • in the hallway or corridor;
  • for children's and playrooms.

If additional beds are periodically needed, it is better to choose a stationary direct type of sofa, it is also suitable for office space.

In places of rest - in the living room, bedroom or dining room - a good solution would be modular version. Island models are convenient for zoning rooms- in the offices, such sofas are equipped with places for informal conversation, in the halls they are installed in front of TVs.

By size

The size of the sofa means not only its actual length and width in centimeters, but also the number of seats (or beds, in the case of a folding version). Compact models, as a rule, are designed for no more than 2-3 people, medium ones - 4-6, and huge modular sofas can accommodate a company of 7 to 10 people.

However, when choosing a finished model, where the dimensions are laid down by the manufacturer, it must be borne in mind that there is no single standard - one manufacturer can offer a double sofa 1.5 meters long, and the other 1.8 m.

An important indicator of the size of upholstered furniture is the height of the back and landing. Sofas for hallways have a low back or are produced without it at all, models with a low back wall and landing are also often installed in halls and bedrooms. In places where it is planned to only sit on the sofa - in the kitchen or in the office space, such options are selected so that the seat height is not lower than a regular chair.

The best choice for a small space would be sofa without side armrests and extra pillows, another trick to reduce the size of furniture without losing functionality is to purchase or order a structure without legs. The possibilities of use will become somewhat limited, it is difficult to clean under such a sofa, but its size will be minimized.

Types of transformation mechanisms

The place of possible installation will depend on the type of mechanism and the method of changing the design. Some models may take up little space themselves, but when transformed, they require much more space. The choice of how to lay out the sofa is also influenced by the purpose of the furniture, the frequency of its use - not all types of mechanisms are designed for frequent use. It is necessary to take into account the estimated weight that will be on the furniture in the unfolded state. So all sofa models are divided into four main types according to the name of the transformation mechanism.

Withdrawable

The assembled design of the roll-out model consists of three separate elements - the rear part in the folded state is a back, and after transformation into a horizontal position it becomes a place for the head. The seats pushed forward and the lower part hidden in the structure are used as the main lying place.

Such models of upholstered furniture are also called - sofas with a telescopic transformation mechanism, because the layout is done from the inside, like a telescope, individual parts are put forward and fixed one after another. Roll-out versions are mainly installed in large rooms, since in the unfolded state the width of the furniture increases by more than three times.

The transformation of the roll-out structure is carried out in several stages.

First, you need to pull the rag handle located in the lower transverse part of the seat, and push the entire seat frame outward. Then you need to level the sleeping surface of the furniture by lowering the back wall down. In some models, additional side pillows are used for these purposes - when assembled, they play the role of a second soft back. The retractable mechanism on such models, as a rule, is based on a roller system, less often - special springs are built into the design, which recline the seats after the lower part is extended.

Sliding

When assembled, sliding models are very elegant and compact, and when unfolded, they resemble a folding bed. After the transformation, the front part is installed on special folding supports, the backrest is lowered, and the assembled bed becomes three separate sections. There are several main types of sliding products.

  • "French" folding bed- the classic version of sliding upholstered furniture. When assembled, it takes up little space, but when laid out, the front part moves forward by one and a half to two meters, depending on the specific model. The "French" mechanism is not recommended for frequent use - a sofa can only occasionally serve as a sleeping place, but basically such models are designed more for sitting.

  • "American" folding bed. By its design, it is similar to the previous model - the beds are formed from three sections, which are put forward in turn and installed on special supports. The main difference is that the "American" version uses a more reliable and durable mechanism - the furniture is designed for frequent use. However, the cost of such sofas is much higher.

  • "Italian" folding bed. Unlike the previous varieties, the “Italian” folding bed is transformed not by lifting the transverse beam of the seats, but by pushing the back wall of the sofa forward. Then the sliding mechanism is also activated, and the surface is installed on the support legs. Compared to the "American" and "French" counterparts, furniture with an "Italian" type of mechanism is equipped with more durable legs.

The most common modifications include accordion mechanism. The principle of its operation is that, moving forward, the berths seem to be stretched with the help of special springs. Metal spring elements, fixed on both sides of the structure, also help to fold the sofa - they tighten the sections inward, setting each in its place. The transformation of these models requires minimal effort - you just need to slightly raise the lower beam of the seats and push it forward.

Just like the clamshell models, the "Accordion" has a very compact size when assembled, it is conveniently installed in small rooms. Another important plus is the presence of a cabinet for linen, located in the back wall of the furniture. Sliding mechanisms "Accordion" are equipped with reliable working elements, have a long service life, withstand considerable weight, are easy to transform, but they also have a drawback - when expanding, the supports slide along the floor and can damage the coating.

lifting

Upholstered furniture with a lifting mechanism consists of two identical parts and involves only two positions - a sitting sofa and a sleeping surface. Horizontal transformation is performed by lifting the seats and folding the backrest back. It is laid on a wooden frame, and the seat beam is lowered into place, in the raised state, the rear wall is fixed with special locking mechanisms.

Before installation, it must be taken into account that between the sofa and the wall, 10-15 cm of empty space will be required for the backrest when it is in the lowered position.

Swivel

Sofas with a swivel mechanism are one of the first to appear on the upholstered furniture market, they are compact and very easy to use, so they always remain relevant. The design involves a minimum of elements, there are no fragile parts, rollers. An important plus is the presence of a box for linen. Of the minuses - there should be a distance of 10-15 cm between the sofa and the wall, which is necessary when unfolding - the seats rise, and the back wall leans back, forming a place for the head.

Thanks to the stoppers, the backrest can be deployed, fixed in the middle position, which is why the models are called swivel.

For a rational choice of a sofa, you should first find out what types of sofas exist. What are their differences, advantages and disadvantages.

There is no strict classification of types of sofas. In this review, I will be guided by the fact that sofas can be classified depending on their design and functional (purpose of the sofa) features. So let's go.

What sofas are depending on the design

In this section, I have selected the most significant design differences between types of sofas. These can be attributed

  • the ability of the sofa to change shape and size without unfolding - in this part, I divided the sofas into stationary and modular
  • the ability of the sofa to transform - unfold
  • types of sofas depending on the type of filler
  • types of sofas depending on the fabric for upholstery sofa (I think this indicator is the least significant)

Now about each design difference of sofas in detail.

Stationary, modular and island types of sofas

On this basis, sofas can be divided into three groups - stationary, modular and island. Let's figure out which ones are better.

Stationary sofas

Stationary sofas are sofas that have a fixed size. They do not allow you to change the shape and size of the product. Usually a stationary sofa is placed along the wall. Often the back wall of the sofa has a more economical finish (for example, felt), which differs from the main upholstery.

In turn, stationary sofas can be divided into:

Direct sofas - usually used in small spaces. There are folding and non-folding

Corner sofas - there are also folding and not folding .Corner sofas require more space.

  • To the virtues stationary sofas can be attributed to the fact that when unfolding the sofa turns into a comfortable bed. You can use this sofa for both sitting and sleeping. The prices for such sofas are also quite lifting.
  • disadvantage stationary sofas is a certain massiveness and not the possibility of changing the shape and size.

Modular sofas

A modular sofa consists of parts - modules that can be combined in different orders and create a single product. You can also use sofa modules as independent furniture elements.

Of course, such models are mobile and suitable for creative individuals. You can change the configuration and general appearance of the sofa. Due to the compact size of the modules, modular sofas are easy to move and transport.

  • Advantages of modular sofas mobility in every sense, transformation and change in the general appearance of the product
  • To disadvantages can be attributed to the fact that such sofas often do not have a bed and have a higher price than stationary sofas, the range of modular sofas on sale is much smaller than the range of stationary sofas.

This type of sofas is used to organize places to relax. At the same time, the sofa is not placed along the walls, but far from them. The sofa forms a semblance of an island. Island sofas have an attractive look from all sides. In shape, they can be round, semi-circular, oval and rectangular. Using an island sofa requires that there is enough free space in the room. The approach to the "island" should be free from all sides. Island sofas come in a variety of sizes. From one or two local to 5-6 local versions.

  • Advantages of island sofas mobility, stylish and unique appearance
  • disadvantages sofas do not have a bed, require large spaces, have a high price

Conclusion: if you need a sofa to organize a sleeping place, then you need a stationary type of sofa. If you want to organize seating and daytime activities, take a look at the modular versions. An island sofa is good if there is a lot of space in the room.

The design features of the sofas allow you to create sofas of various shapes. A detailed description of the possible forms of the sofa in this article.

Types of sofas depending on the ability to transform

Sofas are folding and not folding.

This type of sofa contains a transformation mechanism in the design, which is located inside the sofa body. There are more than a dozen sofa folding mechanisms. You can read more about all the mechanisms of transformation

When the sofa is folded, the mechanism is not visible. The mechanism allows you to convert the dimensions of the sofa. Usually folding sofas are needed to organize a place to sleep. Folding sofas can be both angular and straight.

  • Advantages of folding sofas the possibility of transformation increases the functionality of the sofa - a sofa during the day, a bed at night. Pull-out sofas can contain additional drawers for linen hidden inside the sofa
  • The lack of pull-out sofas associated with the reliability of the mechanism itself and the frame of the sofa. If the transformation of the sofa is frequent, then its wear increases. You need to carefully choose a reliable mechanism and a high-quality sofa frame when buying it.

Sofas are not folding

From the name it follows that this type of sofa cannot be converted into anything. Typically, these models are used to organize seating. Non-folding sofas can be used in pairs and or together with armchairs, creating a seating area, for example, around a coffee table in the living room. Normally, such a sofa will work in your kitchen or dining room. If the area allows, then you can use it in the hallway

  • Advantages of non-folding sofas: compact size, low price
  • Disadvantages of non-folding sofas: weak, limited functionality

Conclusion: if you need a multifunctional assistant, as in advertising all in one bottle, then you need a folding sofa. If the functions are more modest - just sit, then you can save a lot by buying a non-folding sofa.

Types of sofas depending on the type of filler

On this basis, two main groups can be distinguished.

Sofas filled with spring blocks

In such sofas, the filler is a structure made on the basis of metal springs. The springs can be connected in blocks or independent. Also, the spring block can have a common metal frame. This type of sofa is good for sleeping. Spring blocks have a long service life and are comfortable to use.

Sofas with filler without springs

As a filler without spring sofas can be:

  • foam rubber
  • PPU - polyurethane foam
  • latex
  • polystyrene balls

Conclusion: the choice of filler type depends on the functional purpose of the sofa. For sleep, it is better to use sofas based on spring blocks or with latex filler. If you want to save a lot, foam rubber will help you, but then the sofa will have to be changed very quickly. PPU occupies a middle position. It will do a good job of solving problems - a sofa for sleeping and for sitting.

There are a lot of upholstery. Read about the intricacies of choosing upholstery for sofas.

Fundamentally, upholstery can be divided into

  • natural (cotton, leather, tapestry, jacquard, silk)
  • semi-synthetic - consist of a combination of natural and synthetic fibers (flock, chenille)
  • synthetic - consist entirely of artificial components (artificial leather)

But, I believe that among other design features of sofas, upholstery fabric plays the least importance. Because it's the easiest to replace.

General conclusion on upholstery: look at them last - the design of the sofa is more important than its appearance. The choice of upholstery type depends on the purpose of the sofa.

Look at this sofa and think about where it can be used. After a short evaluation, it turns out that there are not so many possibilities for using it.

You can find a classification by purpose, which is based on the types of premises in which the sofa will be used.

What will we get as a result

  • Living room sofa
  • Bedroom sofa
  • Sofa for kitchen, dining room
  • Sofa for children
  • Sofa in the hallway
  • Sofa in the office or library
  • Sofa for loggia and balcony

It seems to me that such a division is not very correct. Yes, it has the right to life, but the same sofa can be put in any of the rooms. The question is different. What would you do on this sofa - sleep, eat or just sit. Do you understand what I mean? You can eat in the living room and sleep in the kitchen.

Therefore, I would single out three key groups of sofas by purpose

  • Seating sofa
  • Sleeping sofa
  • Sofa for sitting and sleeping

Conclusion on the purpose of the sofa: look at the functions that the sofa will solve in your particular case and choose based on this understanding. Do not rush to the marketing tricks of sellers - like This sofa for the living room - buy it and you will be happy. And you want to eat and sleep on it, and in this example there will be happiness, but the seller who "sold" you an unnecessary sofa.
