After kitchen renovation many people have a question: what to do with the old refrigerator? It's been around for a few years now, but luckily it still works great. Change? I don't think this is a good idea.

What if the clothes of the old "breadwinner" do not fit into the interior? We have prepared for you 7 wonderful ways upgrade refrigerator without extra costs.

How to update the refrigerator with your own hands

  1. Refrigerator stickers
    For those who do not like to bother much, there are self-adhesive films or photo stickers. Remove the handles of the refrigerator, thoroughly wash its surface. Take measurements and cut out the desired piece of film. Lightly moisten the surface of the refrigerator with soapy water using a sponge and stick the film little by little, pressing it to the surface.

  2. Simple, fast, bright
    Not every refrigerator can be pasted over with self-adhesive. Therefore, there are a few more ideas - painting, for example. Before the procedure, wash the surface, degrease it, sand it. Cover with masking tape all the parts that are not removable. Apply the paint with a roller or with a spray can. You need to paint a thin layer, wait until it dries and apply more layers. Here you need to be patient, but the result will undoubtedly please you.

  3. Just napkins - nothing more
    Many of you have probably heard about the decoupage technique. So, the refrigerator can be updated with its help. You will need napkins, PVA glue, brushes, acrylic paints and acrylic varnish.

  4. colored tape
    If you want to decorate a refrigerator in a rented apartment, you can safely use colored tape. It is easily removed, and the traces are washed off with a washcloth and warm soapy water.

  5. Romantic shabby chic
    Those who love the French style can turn the refrigerator into a work of art. You will need textured wallpaper, glue, paint, baguette or molding.

  6. Place for creativity
    So that you can draw and write the necessary notes on the refrigerator, cover it with special black paint. It is sold in hardware stores or in departments with goods for creativity.

  7. Patchwork style
    What is patchwork? This is a type of needlework in which the product is sewn from separate pieces of fabric. In this style, you can decorate your refrigerator. You will need fabric, glue and flat magnets. In general, nothing complicated.

The old refrigerator is still in good condition, but is very dilapidated and covered with rust in places?

Or maybe it seems to you that this large metal “box” does not fit into the interior in any way? Or do you just want to spruce up your kitchen a little?

In this article, we will talk about 8 ways to decorate a refrigerator, from DIY painting to decoupage, and also present 80 photo ideas of original alterations.

Method 1. Painting with slate paint and painting with crayons (+ master class)

The slate-coated refrigerator door is the perfect place to keep notes: shopping and to-do lists, recipes and family reminders, and sweet notes. And, of course, it is very convenient for children to draw on such a “board” while mom is cooking. To turn refrigerator doors into writing boards, you can choose one of the following four methods:

Method 1. Painting with slate paint. This method is somewhat more complicated than the others, and besides, it excludes the possibility of returning the surface to its original form. But you can paint with slate paint not only the doors, but the entire body of the equipment, and the coating itself will turn out to be more durable.

Method 2. Finishing with chalk wallpaper. Chalk wallpapers are easier to work with, and most importantly, they can be peeled off without leaving marks on the surface of the equipment. However, the coating is not very durable and needs to be changed periodically. In addition, chalk wallpaper is more difficult to decorate rounded doors, corners, bypass handles, displays and protruding parts when gluing. If you want to glue the entire body, the coating will have visible seams. For this reason, it is best to decorate only the door or part of the door with chalk wallpaper.

Method 3. Mounting a magnetic slate board. Such a board is mounted and dismantled as easily as one large magnet, and you can not only draw on it, but also attach small magnets. Most often, ready-made magnetic boards are not too large, and a large panel can only be purchased on order.

Method 4. Mounting the slate on neodymium magnets. This method is good because it allows you not to paint the refrigerator and, if desired, it is easy to remove the chalk board.

How does such a large chalk board hang on the refrigerator? The secret is simple - several neodymium magnets are glued to its back

Please note that the refrigerator does not have its own handles, its doors open by handles screwed to the chalkboard

What you will need:

Thin sheet of plywood (3-6 mm); Slate paint, primer (preferably), paint brush / roller, cuvette; Moldings for framing the board; Jigsaw or hand saw; Neodymium magnets with holes for screws (the price of one magnet is about 80 rubles, their number and adhesion strength depend on the weight of the board).

Such a super-magnet the size of a ruble coin can easily hold 3 kg of weight.

Shurpas (by the number of magnets), a screwdriver; Stickers on furniture legs (they are needed to avoid scratches on the surface of the doors, as well as chips on the magnets themselves. Such pads are sold in Ikea and hardware stores. If desired, pieces of thin rubber or fleece-type fabric can be glued to the magnets); Furniture handle for each board/door and screws for fastening.

Instruction:

Step 1. We measure the parameters of one or two refrigerator doors.

Step 2. We cut out boards from a sheet of fiberboard exactly according to the size of the doors.

Step 3. Paint the board with a primer, wait for it to dry. Next, apply the first layer of slate paint, let it dry, apply the next layer and leave again for the time recommended by the manufacturer. Finally, apply the third coat of paint (preferably).

Step 4. While the paint dries, unscrew the native handles of your refrigerator.

Step 5. We cut and mount the moldings on the board (you can use wood glue). If desired, moldings can be painted.

Step 6. Now we glue a protective pad on each magnet, then we fasten all the magnets to the back of the board. Be careful and strictly (!) Follow the rules for working with neodymium magnets.

Neodymium magnets are small magnets, but very powerful. They are sold in special online stores in a variety of shapes, sizes and capacities (adhesion strength is indicated on the package). For our project, flat magnets are suitable so that the gap between the board and the door is not too large. The main thing is that the total adhesion force of the magnets exceeds the weight of your board twice (!), otherwise it will slide down.

Step 7. Hooray! The board is ready. Now we attach furniture handles to it.

Step 8 Now it's time to install the board(s). Try opening each door by pulling on the handle, if the board is still and the door opens easily, then your project is complete. If you feel that the board is not attached to the door tightly enough, add a few more magnets.

Method 2. Vinyl stickers

Vinyl stickers are easy to stick and peel off without a trace, they are inexpensive and are sold in a variety of designs, and therefore they can be changed frequently to suit your mood. For example, geometric shapes, images of animals, plant and flower motifs, words and phrases can decorate a refrigerator.

Vinyl stickers can be bought at hardware stores, craft stores, various online stores (for example, on Aliexpress), and also ordered from a printing house. Simple stickers for the refrigerator can be cut by hand from self-adhesive paper.

Method 3. Film or magnetic panels with photo printing

Want to turn your fridge into a realistic phone booth, a retro soda machine or a bottle of your favorite drink? Or maybe you just want to transfer a beautiful photo of your authorship to the door? Then your choice is vinyl film or magnetic vinyl (magnetic panel) with photo printing. Both coating options can not only decorate the refrigerator, but also protect its facades from scratches and dirt.

A film with photo printing is different in that it is glued by smoothing it manually or under the influence of warm air (at home, this is done with a hairdryer). The latter easily fits even on the rounded doors and corners of the refrigerator. Both types of film are suitable for decorating the entire body of equipment.

How to stick a sticker with photo printing on the refrigerator with your own hands? The first step is to degrease the surface with any degreaser or alcohol solution. The handles on the door must first be removed, it is advisable to remove other protruding parts as well. Then the film is carefully applied and simultaneously smoothed with some flat object (for example, a bank card), bubbles and wrinkles are smoothed out. Further, the film is folded along the edges, also smoothed, and the excess is cut off with a clerical knife. And finally, the handles are screwed into place.

Magnetic panels are flexible sheets of 0.5 mm thick vinyl with a magnetic back and photo printing on the front. In fact, these are just large magnets that are made exactly to the dimensions of the doors (but not more than 60 cm wide). Most often, magnetic panels decorate the doors, but they can also decorate the sides of the refrigerator. Magnetic vinyl can be easily assembled and dismantled without leaving any marks.

Method 4. Painting in a bright color, to match the headset or wall (+ master class)

You can update an old refrigerator or fit appliances into the interior simply by painting it with metal paint. The main thing here is to choose the right color.

If you paint the refrigerator to match the wall or headset, it will seem less bulky. This technique is especially good for small kitchens.

If the interior of your kitchen seems too boring for you, then the refrigerator can be painted in a very bright color.

In the interior of the kitchen in the style of retro, country or Provence, a refrigerator in red or pastel color - puddle pink or pale blue will look great.

It is best and easiest to paint a refrigerator with your own hands with spray paint. Ideally, this should be a particularly resistant alkyd enamel or acrylic paint for metal. Canned paint will also work, but it's important to use a quality paint brush to achieve a perfectly even finish.

Instruction:

Step 1. Lightly sand the surface to remove the gloss. If there is rust or chips somewhere, then we also remove them and level them with sandpaper.

Step 2. Clean and degrease the surface with an alcohol solution.

Step 3. With masking tape we cover everything that we want to protect from painting, we close the refrigerator chamber with a film. Don't forget to put film or newspapers on the floor and open the window.

Step 4. Shake the can well and start spraying the paint with a uniform thin layer and let it dry, then apply the second and third layers (if necessary). Remember that instead of one thick layer of paint, it is better to apply two thin ones.

To increase the durability of the paint and facilitate its application, it is advisable to first coat the surface with a primer.

Step 5. We cover the surface with a matte or glossy varnish, which will make the new coating more durable and moisture resistant.

Method 5. Hand-painted

Hand painting can turn a refrigerator into a unique art object or simply into a very nice and “animate” piece of furniture. You can paint the technique with paints and brushes, special acrylic markers or airbrushes.

It is better to trust complex compositions to professionals, but with your own hands you can draw a simple drawing, use a stencil or masking tape (to create stripes). Here is a large selection of photos of simple refrigerator painting ideas that even a beginner can implement.

From this video tutorial you will learn how to decorate an old refrigerator with your own hands using a stencil in the form of a lace tablecloth.

Method 6. Decoupage (+ master class)

Decoupage is an easy and great way to update an old fridge, adapt it to a rustic or traditional style kitchen, or complete it with hand-painted or moldings.

Decoupage refrigerator type Side by side

To decoupage the refrigerator you will need:

Multi-layered napkins with the desired print, or rather special cards for decoupage (they can be large in size, and the drawings themselves are already composed in the composition); Scissors; PVA glue; Brushes: flat squirrel (for decoupage and applying varnish) and thin synthetic (for drawing details); Pencil (for marking and sketching); Acrylic paints; Acrylic varnish (matte, glossy or with craquelure effect).

Instruction:

Step 1. Prepare the surface: degrease with an alcohol solution if you plan to glue the pattern on the factory finish, or paint the refrigerator in the desired color and wait until the paint dries.

Step 2. Separate the layer with the pattern from the napkin and cut out the desired element along the contour with scissors. Cut as many blanks as needed.

Step 3. Start gluing the first drawing: glue it on the wrong side, apply it to the desired place, then carefully smooth out the bubbles and folds with a brush, remove excess glue with a damp cloth with tamping movements. Next, glue all the other blanks, moving from the center to the edges, starting with large and ending with small elements.

Before sticking napkins, it is advisable to apply markings to the surface of the door.

Step 4. When the whole composition is formed, draw small details and contours.

Step 5. Apply two or more coats of matt or glossy varnish to the drawing to give it greater strength and moisture resistance.

Method 7. Decoration with moldings and "carved" details (+ master class)

If your kitchen is decorated in a classic style, then a grandiose project of converting a refrigerator into ... an old sideboard will help you fit a free-standing refrigerator into its interior.

View of the old refrigerator before and after remodeling

What you need for decoration:

Moldings made of wood or PVC; Carved furniture decoration in wood/PVC or gypsum/polyurethane moldings in the form of a crown, as well as patterned corners (if possible); Saw for trimming moldings; Glue for metal.

What you need for painting:

adhesive primer; White chalk paint (you can do it yourself according to recipes from the Internet or buy, say, from designer Daria Geller); Chalk paint of the main color; Brush for painting, 1 round brush with a diameter of 8-7 cm (useful for both painting and waxing), medium flat brush (for wax); Dark wax (can be replaced with a mixture of colorless wax with dark brown paint); The wax is colorless; Painting accessories: film, masking tape, etc.

At the moment, it cannot be said that there is a shortage of equipment in stores. But all of it is mostly monotonous and does not look very interesting. Therefore, do-it-yourself refrigerator decor is more relevant than ever.

Consider options...

How to decorate a refrigerator without spending a lot of money? Beautiful magnets or photo frames with a magnetized base will help to emphasize his individuality.

You can buy magnets at any stationery store! But, if possible, it is better to make them yourself.

Salt dough can be used to make magnets. Figures can be made in the form of fruits, flowers, animals, geometric shapes. Then the future magnets are painted and a magnetic plate is glued to them with super glue.

Aerography

How to decorate the refrigerator so that it looks spectacular? Use an airbrush! With it, you can get drawings of any complexity.

Everyone chooses a topic for themselves. If you are not confident in your abilities, you should contact the designers!

Using stickers

The most inexpensive way to decorate an old refrigerator is to stick ready-made vinyl stickers or self-adhesive film on it. In the second case, the design of the device will change completely. The refrigerator can become "stone", "leopard" and even "wooden". Stickers will make the product more attractive.

Most popular images:

  • Marine life;
  • flowers;
  • cats;
  • birds;
  • butterflies.

In addition to stickers, you can apply sparkles, rhinestones or ribbons to the refrigerator. You can outline the drawing with paints or a marker.

2 in 1: Refrigerator and Organizer

This option is perfect for business people. It is enough to purchase a video magnet and install it on the refrigerator. The gadget not only looks beautiful, but also suitable for storing records in video format, which will remind you that it's time to pay bills or go shopping.

The video magnet is an organizer in an electronic version: it can store notes about cases, mark the time for cooking and be notified when they are ready.

The device has a speaker, a microphone, a video camera and an LCD screen. A special indicator signals that there is a message.

Decoupage technique

Decoupage is a decoration technique that involves cutting out various images from paper. These images are pasted directly on the refrigerator.

Decoupage gives you the opportunity to create a unique image of technology that will suit your interior!

Techniques such as gilding or aging can also be used. Volumetric decoupage involves the use of model mass.

Where to get pictures? The first option is to purchase beautiful multilayer napkins. In this case, you have to separate the first layer with the picture, cut it out and stick it on the refrigerator using PVA. After the glue dries, varnish is applied to the image in several layers.

The second option is to print the image you like on the printer. The paper is suitable for regular office paper. Then the following steps are taken:

  1. Coat the printout with varnish several times.
  2. Wait until it dries.
  3. Dip the leaf into a bowl of water.
  4. Lay a towel on the table and place a wet picture on it, the image should look down.
  5. Roll up layers of paper base with your hands.
  6. A thin film of acrylic with an image should remain - it is glued to the refrigerator.

The separation of the paper base is a complex process. Therefore, it is recommended to prepare two printouts. On one of them you can practice.

Decoupage on the refrigerator “Grapes”

You will need standard materials used for decoupage and napkins with a Grape pattern.

Instruction:

  1. Cut out the drawing. Important! To prevent the grapes from looking monotonous, remove a couple of grapes or leaves from several branches.
  2. Consider the pattern and arrangement of all elements. Then start gluing.
  3. After the decoupage is completed and all the bunches are glued, draw the antennae and the vine connecting the grapes.
  4. Don't forget to apply highlights with white paint.

Decoupage completed. After the work dries, the refrigerator is varnished 2 times.

Magnetic whiteboard

A writing board is a great way to decorate your refrigerator. It costs only 400-800 rubles. Also, everyone can make such a board on their own. All you need is magnetic paint and an MDF sheet. The board is cut directly from the MDF sheet.

Then you have to process the edges and apply magnetic paint to the product in several layers. It remains only to wait until the board dries and you can use it!

You can also purchase a finished product. The magnetic board can be marker or slate (for drawing with chalk).

The slate board is distinguished by a black canvas. The drawings applied with chalk are erased with a damp sponge. The stand for the sponge and crayons is also attached to the refrigerator with a magnet.

The marker board is a more modern option. It comes with a special sponge and markers.

A novelty offered by stores is a multi-colored marker board. It will make any refrigerator bright and attractive.

Refrigerator painting

You can decorate the refrigerator with a painting. For this, various types of paints are used:

  • stained glass;
  • oil;
  • acrylic.

Compared to such techniques as decoupage, painting requires a certain skill. If you are not confident in your abilities, use templates. Both images on an abstract topic - abstraction, copies of famous paintings, and images of kitchen utensils are popular.

So, there are many ways to make a real work of art out of a nondescript plain refrigerator. At the same time, most decorating techniques can be learned on your own.

Thanks to manufacturers of household appliances for the fact that refrigerators are no longer monotonously white. However, do-it-yourself refrigerator decor allows you to make the kitchen interior truly unique and original. What decoration methods can be used?

Much depends on how well you can draw in different techniques. If things are not going well with independent drawing, you can use other skills - for example, the ability to needlework. There would be a desire, but there will be opportunities for creative manifestation.

Painting

The easiest is painting. You can paint the body of the refrigerator in the color that you lack in the kitchen for a holistic and harmonious interior. If you use several colors and masking tape, you can decorate the surface of the refrigerator cabinet with beautiful ornaments or abstract color compositions with your own hands. You can paint the refrigerator with a brush, a paint roller, or simply by spraying paint from an aerosol can.

Before you paint the refrigerator, you need to properly prepare the surface:

  • sanding scratches and chips;
  • degrease everything that should be covered with paint;
  • cover handles, decorative strips with masking tape or other protective materials.

Don't forget to take care of good ventilation, but it's better to choose a fine day in general and paint the refrigerator in the open air.

stickers

This is a self-adhesive vinyl film with drawings printed on it. The film can be without a pattern, plain, different colors. It not only decorates the refrigerator, but also protects its surfaces from scratches and chips, and at the same time covers the existing ones. Vinyl self-adhesive is a completely budgetary way to update the refrigerator and change its boring look.

There are many options for applying vinyl decals. You can decorate the surface of the refrigerator by placing small stickers in certain places. This is convenient in cases where scratches and stains have appeared on the enamel coating, but overall the refrigerator looks pretty decent.

A bold and stylish decor will ensure that the vinyl film is glued to the entire plane. Specialized companies produce large format printing on vinyl, including your choice. You can apply 3-D images on stickers that will turn your refrigerator into an unusual piece of kitchen interior.

Vinyl self-adhesive can be a good alternative to painting - sticking it with your own hands on the refrigerator can be faster than painting it. Yes, and the paint does not have to breathe. There are many types of self-adhesive film. You can choose from any color and pattern. The only difficulty that remains is to smoothly and accurately transfer the stickers to the refrigerator.

It is convenient to use a glass cleaner for gluing. This alcohol-containing liquid degreases the surface well, and at the same time creates a layer of liquid that prevents the film from sticking immediately tightly. You have time to smooth the self-adhesive, remove unintentional bubbles and align the stickers on the surface. After a while, the liquid will evaporate and the stickers will remain glued nicely and evenly.

It is only necessary to check before starting work whether the pattern dissolves from contact with liquid. This rarely happens with finished roll films, but if the labels were printed on a printer, then anything can happen.

painting

If fate has endowed you with the talent to create beautiful drawings, you can paint your refrigerator with your own hands. Sometimes an ordinary waterproof marker and a bit of patience are enough to decorate the refrigerator with a pattern of ornaments or floral motifs.

If you have the skills to handle an airbrush, then you can turn your refrigerator into the envy of all friends and guests. The airbrush allows you to create a painting worthy of being called a masterpiece, which no other 3-D stickers can compare with. Of course, such a painting will take a lot of time, but you will get a truly unique result, created by your own hands and your own talent. The ability to draw with an airbrush can be learned if you basically have a penchant for drawing.

But most often the painting is done with ordinary brushes and acrylic paints, you will also need a means for preliminary degreasing and cleaning the surface. And then the mystery of creativity begins, depending only on you. You can paint in a folk style, draw a landscape or still life, or just a floral ornamental painting.

It remains only to give a few tips: do not use too dark and bright tones for sketching, so that later they do not shine through the painting. And do not forget: acrylic paints, if desired, can be washed off with a special solvent. Don't let the fear of ruining your fridge stop your inspiration from flying.

Decoupage

Oh, this is a great way to decorate the dull, plain white surface of the refrigerator with your own hands! Yes, to perform high-quality decoupage, you will need certain skills and patience. Perhaps it’s worth trying to decorate a couple of small things with this method in order to master the technique.

The essence of the method is, roughly speaking, in the application. A thin layer of paper or other material with an image is glued to a clean surface. After drying, everything is covered with several layers of acrylic varnish. The finished refrigerator will look like it was painted. You can apply additional methods of decoration - gilding, aging, create a certain relief on the surface.

But do not forget that the smoother the surface, the easier it is to clean. And you can’t wash the refrigerator, so it’s better not to abuse it with embossed decor.

For decoupage use:

  • special multilayer napkins, removing from them for gluing a layer with images;
  • special decoupage cards that you can buy in online stores for needlework;
  • clippings from magazines;
  • pictures printed on plain paper.

For gluing, PVA glue diluted with water or special decoupage glues are used.

You can apply decoupage stickers in places, or cover the entire refrigerator with images. In any case, the entire surface is varnished to avoid peeling.

Decoupage is often combined with painting elements, when the made stickers are painted on with a brush or marker before varnishing everything.

Other decor methods

  • Magnetic board. This is a direct relative of the well-known souvenir magnet, only much larger. Made from flexible material. You can do it yourself if you find magnetic paint or sheets of magnetic plastic on sale. On a magnetic board pasted on the refrigerator, you can draw with a marker or chalk - for example, leave notes at home or just cool drawings.
  • Use of magnetic photo frames.
  • The use of fabrics, fur and other materials for decoration is also found, but this can hardly be considered a rational solution. The refrigerator needs to be kept clean, and this will become difficult or even impossible if you drape it in frills or cover it with fur appliqués. The same can be said about the use of quilling and origami elements for decoration: a complex relief cannot be kept clean.

The old refrigerator is still in good condition, but is very dilapidated and covered with rust in places? Or maybe it seems to you that this large metal “box” does not fit into the interior in any way? Or do you just want to spruce up your kitchen a little?

Step 4. Shake the can well and start spraying the paint with a uniform thin layer and let it dry, then apply the second and third layers (if necessary). Remember that instead of one thick layer of paint, it is better to apply two thin ones.

  • To increase the durability of the paint and facilitate its application, it is advisable to first coat the surface with a primer.

Step 5. We cover the surface with a matte or glossy varnish, which will make the new coating more durable and moisture resistant.

Method 5. Hand painting (+ video tutorial)

  • Multi-layered napkins with the desired print, or rather special cards for decoupage (they can be large in size, and the drawings themselves are already composed in the composition);
  • Scissors;
  • PVA glue;
  • Brushes: flat squirrel (for decoupage and applying varnish) and thin synthetic (for drawing details);
  • Pencil (for marking and sketching);
  • Acrylic paints;
  • Acrylic varnish (matte, glossy or with craquelure effect).

  • Before sticking napkins, it is advisable to apply markings to the surface of the door.

Step 4. When the whole composition is formed, draw small details and contours.

Step 5. Apply two or more coats of matt or glossy varnish to the drawing to give it greater strength and moisture resistance.
