How to cut a tulle mesh. How to sew tulle curtains yourself? Cutting and fabric preparation

Textile decor is the final touch of interior design, and it is important. It is important to choose curtains, curtains or curtains correctly so that the final touch does not cancel out all the efforts in decorating the room. By the way, the correct design of the window can help hide minor flaws in interior design and solve architectural problems of spatial composition.

Curtains, in addition to decorative, have a significant utilitarian: protective and security. Curtains protect the room from the bright sun, protect from strange prying eyes. Despite the importance of this interior detail, it is not at all difficult to make it yourself. How to sew a tulle with your own hands from organza or a veil: video tutorials will help you cope with the task.

Light curtains made of tulle, organza or veils can act as an addition to blackout curtains. If the protective and security functions of the curtains are not so important - the window does not face the sunny side, prying eyes do not interfere, a beautiful tulle can be used as an independent product.

Choose a model

The first thing you need to do when starting to create clothes for the window with your own hands is to decide on the style. The decorative design of the window is closely related to the overall style of the room. For interior design in a classic style, models with draperies are perfect. If you sew tulle curtains imitating fillet knitting or lace, they will emphasize the rustic style.

In modern interiors, it is better to sew organza tulle with a metallic sheen. In addition to style, the purpose of the room is important in choosing a curtain model. For the kitchen, you should not sew lush curtains. Often there is not enough space in the kitchen, and the abundance of folds on the curtains can be both non-functional - they quickly get dirty, lose their appearance, and are a fire hazard, especially if the stove is located next to the window.

A good choice for the kitchen would be cafe-type curtains, or, as they are also called, “twists”. Look at the photo how such curtains create a cozy mood in the kitchen. Thick, lace tulle is well suited for manufacturing. Making a window in the "grandmother's style", see how to sew a tulle in the video.

How to choose fabric

For light curtains, light, transparent ones are used: tulle, organza, veil. Let's understand the terms.

  • Tulle is a mesh fabric, plain or patterned, made from silk, cotton or synthetic threads.
  • Organza is a tough, translucent fabric. Available in polyester, silk, viscose. It can be smooth or printed, etched or embroidered.
  • Veil is also a translucent fabric, but unlike organza, it is soft, flowing.

Both veil and organza are suitable for creating draperies or folds, but when buying material, pay attention to how draperies behave differently: organza pleats have a rigid shape, voile ones lie softly.

When choosing curtains, you can go in two ways: choose the style of the curtains and buy a curtain fabric according to the idea, or go to the store - make a choice from the fabric you like. Whichever of the two methods you would choose, there are several rules for choosing curtains for the interior.

  • Fabric for curtains is selected for wall decoration, and the choice of tulle is no exception.
  • If a beautiful tulle was chosen as an independent option for decorating a window, then perhaps you should opt for a more active pattern or color.
  • White color is the most classic option, which can easily fit into a room with any finish. If you are a fan of the classics or find it difficult to choose a color, opt for shades of white.
  • When choosing a curtain material, do not forget that you will see the fabric on the window "through the light" - be sure to estimate how the matter looks with a light source.

If, when choosing a curtain model, you opted for lush draperies, the material should not be with an active, large pattern. Decorative folds look better on smooth. An excellent choice in this case is organza or veil. On sale there are types of organza with "chameleon" colors - the color changes, depending on the angle of view. Curtains with lush folds from such a fabric show a richness of shades.

Sewing curtains with your own hands is easy

Even for a beginner dressmaker, sewing tulle beautifully is not difficult. The main thing that is required is accuracy. Simple tulle curtains can be sewn even without a sewing machine. The photo shows how to sew tulle in the kitchen. Curtain fabric is most often sold in a width of three meters. The pattern on the fabric for curtains is coupon, its location is across the width of the roll. Tulle for curtains very often has a decorative border in the form of scallops.

This finish does not require additional processing - hemming the bottom. Therefore, if you decide to sew curtains from tulle, and do not have enough experience, start by sewing from such a fabric. When buying material for sewing curtains, it is necessary to take into account the width of the window and the margin for draperies. Before going to the store, measure the width of the cornice, add a margin for drapery to the resulting size. If you are planning lush folds, the width of the cornice should be multiplied by two.

If you opted for small, light folds, then half the size of the cornice is enough to form folds. The sellers in the store will help you calculate the length of the cut correctly. In a fabric store, it is advisable to buy a ready-made curtain tape - a special braid that sets the rhythm of the folds. Using the tape, you will achieve evenly spaced folds in one easy movement - pulling on the string.

The store has samples of draperies obtained using different types of curtain tape. Before buying fabric, choose the type of curtain tape, and the amount required depends on what kind of drapery the tape creates.

If you have any questions, you can additionally watch how to sew a tulle with your own hands on the video. Using the instructions, you can easily cope with the task of sewing simple curtains.

To start Let's calculate the set of fabric that we need to buy.
For different fabrics, a different coefficient, for example, for a fabric with a pattern, it will be enough to take a double set (that is, we multiply the baguette width by two), for a fabric without a pattern we take 2-2.5 times. But light gauze fabric (organza) needs to be typed 2.5-3 times, not less (better more)) Monophonic fabrics are always better to take more than fabrics with a pattern. The only place where a coefficient of 1.5 is allowed is in fabrics with a very thick heavy pattern or a wide stripe (and then this is if out of economy)
In general, I repeat:
Chiffon, moire (berzhan, microveil), crèche veil, crystal, linen, etc. - 2-2.5 times + 0.3 per hemming
Organza - 2.5-3 times + 0.3 for hemming

How to calculate how much to cut according to the height of the fabric:
If the tulle will be sewn onto a wide curtain braid, then we take the height from the bottom of the hook to the floor - 1 cm + 8 cm (if without a side) and + 4-5 cm (if with a side). If the fabric is without weighting, then add another 6-7 cm to hemming the bottom (or do not add if the bottom is processed with an oblique trim)

If the tulle is sewn on a narrow braid, then instead of 8 cm we add 4-5 cm + everything else as described above.

So, let's begin

1. We measure the height we need + allowances on the fabric and cut it off by a thread (sorry, I forgot to take a picture). To do this, we make a notch (cut) on the fabric, where the cut line should be, find a thread that runs parallel to the edge and pull as far as possible. It is not necessary to pull it out completely, the main thing for us is to designate the "path")) We cut it off.

2. Often, sellers do not cut fabric without a pattern, but tear it (this turns out to be smoother than if cut by weight) So, we need to align this torn edge so that it does not tighten the seam, cut off about a centimeter from the edge on both sides.

3. We process the side edges of the fabric (and the bottom, if the fabric is not weighted), the hem width is about 3-3.5 cm (if you make a narrow hem, the edge turns out ugly)

In order not to warp the bottom (weighting agent), I pull out a rope with lead balls from it by about 12 cm, because if this is not done, you will either break the needle or fidget the fabric.

Iron the edges

(this is not curvature - this is the fabric slightly faldit

And, of course, braid (wide braid, waffle, we call it that)

5. Prepare the edges: measure the height of the finished product and mark with a pin (a), and pin the edge 7-10 cm inside out in order to hide the seams (b), this is what I do when I need to make a cut in the middle, for a balcony, for example .

6. We turn the tulle over with the front side, put the braid on it with the upper edge (where the loops are closer), after bending the edge of the braid under the edge of the tulle, and make the first line.

In this case, the braid should cover the edge of the tulle with its entire width (this is not necessary, but it is better so that the edge does not shine through)

We attach the braid along the very edge, while focusing on the opposite edge, it should move parallel to the edge. The distance from the top edge of the braid to the "ready-made height" mark should be 2 cm (it can be 1.5 if there is no border at all, see below)

And so on across the width

7. The edge on the opposite side is also already prepared

We bend, as in the beginning of the braid and fasten.

We should be like this

8. Next, we bend the upper edge of the tulle with the braid to the wrong side and, leaving a side of 2-3 mm (more is possible, but in this case it is)), we fix it with pins in four places (exactly in four, where the edges of the fabric can move out) Also and from the other side.

We get it like this (wrong side)

(face)

9. We scribble along the bottom of the braid in a millimeter from the edge

10. And in the middle of the braid, between the bottom eyelet and the rope (only IN NO EVENT SHOULD YOU HIT THE ROPE!! otherwise you won’t be able to pull it off later)

Ready! We check the height of the finished product (you need to measure from the top loop to the bottom)

We iron. We get such a picture (face)

(wrong side)

11. It remains only to pull the tape to the desired width. First, ALWAYS tie knots on both sides of all 4 ropes !!

25.

Then we just pull it together .. This is how the tulle looks like, assembled on the braid 2 times

And so with a coefficient of 1: 2.5

The windows of textile stores are full of various options for curtains and curtains, with and without decorations. Therefore, decorating the window is not a problem for those who want it. But it’s too easy to go to the store and buy a ready-made version, you can buy fabric and try to sew the curtains yourself. Here you need to apply a little imagination and concentration - and the result will please.

Tulle on the window

Yes, for those who do not want or are too lazy to put their hands on and sew curtains and tulle with their own hands, it is better to close the article and order a ready-made version from the atelier according to the thousands of template blanks already collected there. But for those who want to learn and understand how to sew tulle, the article will become an assistant. Let's figure out in detail where it is better to start.

Before you sew beautiful curtains and curtains, you should familiarize yourself with common measurement patterns. Also, immediately you need to carefully consider the color scheme and colors that can be in harmony with the overall design of the room. If the veil is being designed for a kitchen or dining room, then consider a simpler design, as curtains are often washed in these rooms.

If the task is to make curtains from organza tulle for a nursery, then restrained tones will do, too colorful or faded tones will not work. In the bedroom, it is customary to use curtains to darken the room in order to escape from bright sunlight, here tulle should be chosen darker. In other rooms, it is better to pay attention to what kind of general decor and try to fit the curtains into it so that the individual idea is a success.

Before you sew organza tulle, you need to buy what you need, stock up on:

  • The right amount of fabric;
  • Whatman paper, on which patterns and sketches are drawn;
  • Scissors and meter tape;
  • Threads similar to the color of the fabric and an electric sewing machine;
  • Braid with loops, with which the fabric is attached to the cornice;
  • Buy handmade decor to decorate the curtains (fringe, braid, etc.).

You can stock up on these materials at any sewing store.

Procedure

Before starting the main steps, you need to choose a beautiful piece of fabric and make a pattern. To smooth the fabric, wet it a little, let it dry and lay it out on a flat surface, straightening the corners. If the folds and dents are not gone, then you need to iron or evaporate with an iron, if there is such a function in it. If you have to iron, then you need to do this through wet gauze so as not to damage the fabric, do not burn it. If the fabric is new, then there will still be shrinkage after washing, do not be surprised.

After the curtain is smoothed out, you need to start selecting all the sizes that will not be useful in sewing. The length and width are measured individually, it depends on the window opening, which must be carefully measured and the room. If organza veil curtains are needed for the kitchen, then you can make the length to the windowsill, and not to the floor, so that they are not large and do not absorb dust and grease in the kitchen. But Japanese-style organza veil curtains must be chosen with drapery, so that the style is complex and beautiful, decorating the room.

In other rooms, you can create a look of an elegant interior using the length of the curtains to the floor, leaving the width of the plinth below so that no one walks on the curtains. The width of the pattern should always be twice as long as the cornice on which this curtain hangs. Organza is usually paired with thicker fabrics to look complete. When this is done, the length of the transparent part decreases, approximately one and a half lengths of the cornice should be taken. These standard measurements are convenient as they are universal for most windows and homes. Having measured all the edges and lines, you need to remember to add small allowances for processing - about 2-3 cm, which will go to the hem and stitch.

We sew tulle

In order for the pattern to turn out correct and then it was possible to sew something on it, you need to make calculations and apply to foxes only on a flat surface, on the floor or table. On the pattern, light organza is laid only on the inside. When sewing, pay attention to the bottom and side lines - an angle of 90 degrees must be observed between them. If the pattern and the curtain are divided into two parts, then you need to sew side by side in order to see whether the pattern converges or not, you constantly need to check it.

Side edge trim

Having finished with these patterns and preparing the fabric, we move on to the side edges; it is impossible to sew curtains from tulle without this. We will work with those few centimeters that were left for the allowance. So that the fold in the process does not change and does not deteriorate, you need to bend and walk along it with something solid. Ideally, just iron on the board. When you start to run over the fabric, do not forget how fragile it is.

After this manipulation with the iron, you need to fold the fabric and sweep the folded edges yourself so that they remain even. After you need to stitch the edges on a sewing machine. If you have never done this, then practice on a flap, the main thing is that the seam is even, there are no difficulties.

Curtain decoration

It is not enough to sew tulle and curtains beautifully, you also need to decorate the canvas to your taste. At the bottom, a fringe looks good, matching the color of the main fabric. The style should also be taken into account so that it does not look too sharp. You can decorate tulle curtains with special ribbons and ribbons, only so that their width is no more than 15 cm. It is also allowed to attach lace, which should be similar in texture to the main fabric or combined in contrast.

Organza window decor needs to be fixed in such ways, as it is thin and can tear:

  1. If the curtain is attached to the eaves with hooks or loops, then a strip with ready-made loops must be sewn on at the top. It is advisable to choose such a braid, which can then be collected into a drapery;
  2. It is better to fasten curtains to a semicircular cornice with loops, they are made of the same fabric as the canvas, they match in color and fabric. The pattern of such an attachment is made at the rate of 15 cm on the front side plus allowances. Calculations are made based on the size of the eaves.

You now know how to sew curtains yourself, but it is worth mentioning a few useful design tips. Even when the main work is already finished, there is no need to throw away extra patches and pieces. From the remnants, you can make decorations, special fasteners that will help push the curtains in different directions. There is enough area with a length of 70 cm, no more. It does not matter what was used, a veil or organza for curtains. What will be the width does not matter. Also, beautiful flowers are made from tulle flaps, which are then sewn to the main fabric. You just need to take into account that the veil is different from organza, it is thinner and it is unlikely that it will work out of sewing a multi-story structure.

WATCH THE VIDEO INSTRUCTIONS

In this regard, you need to use fantasy - the more magnificent the curtain, the more views it will collect.

Tulle is an important link in the design of the window. By turning on the imagination and a little skill, you can sew the original curtain. Next, consider the instructions on how to sew an incomparable tulle at home with your own hands. In addition, you can produce a unique item.

Procedure

It is important to consider the color of the fabric so that the curtain is perfectly combined with the interior of the room.

We start by taking measurements: we add the total number of lateral distances to the window width. The resulting amount is doubled to form beautiful folds. By measuring the gap from the floor to the curtain, we find out the length of the product. Do not forget to leave three centimeters for allowances. We lay out the canvas on the floor and start cutting:

  • cut off the excess edge;
  • we bend and scribble the marked allowances;
  • sew a ribbon along the top edge.
  • The product is ready.

Curtains for the kitchen

  • feature of the chosen model;
  • color scheme of the kitchen interior;
  • window size;
  • host's preference.

There is no need to hang curtains in such a room. Tulle in the kitchen can be an independent accessory. The fabric is selected according to the intended model. It can be an openwork organza or a denser chiffon. Non-standard approaches involve something like a grid.

Tulle from straight stripes is very relevant today. Made of fine linen weave, this product looks modest and dreamy.

In small rooms, it is advisable to design a design slightly longer than the window sill. Such curtains will not interfere with movement and are easy to care for. To preserve the perfect look, a trim or decorative border is sewn along the bottom edge of the tulle. A long curtain looks impressive, but in more spacious rooms.

The most convenient model of tulle is the arch. To make such a tulle is simple. Tailoring does not differ from the considered option. The only difference is in the cutting of the canvas: we cut out a symmetrical pattern, apply it to the bottom of the fabric and cut it out.

Curtain models

In children's apartments it is worth choosing a canvas for curtains in light colors. The perfect option is a one-color curtain, decorated with the image of characters. The multifunctional color of tulle is white, you can look at the shade of beige or cream.

Choose the style to your taste. Use the applique, decorate with beads, add a fancy lambrequin. If the room is for a girl, then feel free to use ruffles and bows. If this is a boy's room, then abstract figures, cosmic bodies, images of cars are more appropriate. Having decorated the curtain with applications from the animated series, then any child from the room will be delighted.

A wonderful place where all the guests in the house gather must be perfect. For such a room, light, transparent fabrics are suitable. A straight curtain looks great in a natural way, in warm colors. Not necessarily it will be usually hanging fabric, you can decorate it with tasteful accessories.

Sewing an elegant tulle in the living room is just as easy. The case of improving curtains in a room of this kind must be taken with attention. The room should look luxurious and elegant. That is why it is necessary to decorate curtains with your own hands so as not to go overboard with accessories.

You can use crystals, tassels or picturesque pendants to decorate plain curtains. Graceful flowers made independently from a smooth ribbon or from pieces of the remaining fabric from tulle are suitable as an element for drapery.

Decorated pendants will be cast favorably, giving a special entourage. Do not be afraid to create your own individual style, emphasizing your peculiarity.

Using leftover fabric

After cutting the curtains, pieces of fabric will definitely remain. A little imagination and a piece can turn into a stunning decor: a flower-shaped decoration, a curtain clip, prints, bows, lambrequins. Tulle from the remaining strips of fabric will come out not only interesting, but also original. After all, the product must be assembled from pieces of material, giving rise to a unique pattern of curtains.

From a piece of the remaining fabric for tulle, you can create many incredible products. In most cases, housewives choose flowers. The image of a tulle rose is immediately created.

To form this element, you will need: a strip of fabric 25 by 10 cm, a needle, thread and beads. We fold the fabric in half in equal halves. We wind the tape on the rod so that the next turn is slightly higher than the previous one. At the end, leave a length of 7 cm.

Then we take the thread by color and sew all the resulting layers in the center of the resulting design. We decorate the middle of the rose with a bead. On the Internet you will find many photos of unique tulle decorated with flowers.

The latest trend in the design world has been the amalgamation of opposing styles. The article gives a short master class on how to sew a classic tulle. There is no need to follow the established rules - they often offer dull variations. It is better to use maximum improvisation and abilities in sewing curtains from light fabric.

DIY tulle photo

If the classic-style side curtains are ready, but there is no tulle, then this window decoration is not complete. Tulle is an essential detail of a classic window and an indispensable companion for curtains, which is selected in color according to them. It is worth noting the fact that the cost of tulle is much higher than that of curtains. Therefore, sewing tulle with your own hands will cost much less, and at the same time, the product can be made in an exclusive version.

Many are not familiar with the technique of sewing tulle, although even a person who is ignorant of sewing curtains can complete the simplest model. The main thing is to have at least a minimum of knowledge in the field of sewing art. If there is a beautiful fabric, then sewing tulle with your own hands is quite possible to master. And as a test, sew tulle for the kitchen, children's room. It is important to observe 3 main principles:

  • the model of curtains for tailoring must be chosen strictly in accordance with the style direction of the room;
  • focusing on the characteristics of the current interior design, you should clearly define the colors of the tulle;
  • be extremely careful while sewing.

Let's dwell on sewing a simple do-it-yourself tulle that will decorate the window in the nursery. For the implementation of all actions will be necessary:

  • sewing machine;
  • fabric (about 6 m) - any lightweight material can be used instead of tulle (for example, organza);
  • threads;
  • tape for curtains (6 m);
  • roulette;
  • scissors;
  • ironing board;
  • iron.

Step by step instructions for sewing tulle with your own hands

The first step is to correctly calculate the length and width of the fabric. To create a beautiful drapery, on which frequent uniform folds will look original, it is better to take 2 cornice widths. For example, the cornice has a length of 2.5 m, so the tulle is purchased at 5 m. A tape measure is a good helper for taking measurements.

The height of the ceiling is measured from the eaves to the floor line. It is important to take measurements in several places. Since, at different sizes, a smooth bevel is made in the upper part of the tulle.

You can find out the required length for the finished tulle in this way: measure the gap between the eaves and the floor line with a tape measure. For an approximate calculation, we will take this distance equal to 2.4 m. Then we subtract 2 cm from the resulting length, plus another 10 cm to the resulting figure for bending the lower part and 3 cm for bending under the curtain tape.

Approximate calculation: 2.4-0.02 + 0.1 + 0.03 \u003d 2.51 m.

They proceed to cutting the side edges when the lengths of the sides of the tulle become known.

Tip: do not rush to throw away the remaining pieces of fabric. They can be useful in the manufacture of various frills for decorative interior elements in the house.

The hem of the edge is performed no more than 2.5 cm and a straight line is laid. A width of 2.5 cm makes it possible to hide any small irregularities. Regularly check the tension of the layers of fabric from below and above so that the tulle does not go in waves.

On the surface of the floor, tulle is spread with the wrong side up. Since the fabric is slippery, it is advisable to put it on a clinging surface (for example, on a carpet). Using a tape measure, determine the height of the future product.

If there are uneven surfaces in the apartment, the measurements will be taken and applied to the fabric are not the same. On the marked marks, smooth the edge of the fabric from above. It is important during the measurement process not to confuse where which edge is located.

Along the edge of the canvas from above, stepping back 0.5 m, mark a small segment with dots, then smooth over them with an iron and connect. The edges of the tulle are folded over by 2 cm and carefully stitched.

If you need access to the window, the canvas can be cut into 2 parts.

When attaching the curtain tape, be very careful that the stitching never crosses with the pull cord. Otherwise, it will simply break.
