Shower hose leaking how to fix. Shower head how to choose, disassemble, clean and repair

The bathroom is a place where everyone can relax and relieve stress after a hard day at work. But for this it would not hurt to make a good repair, which will bring aesthetic pleasure. The quality and appearance of plumbing plays a special role in this.

Types of shower hose

The shower hose is an accessory. Visually, it is a flexible long tube, the main purpose of which is to connect the nozzle and the mixer.

As a rule, the base is made of dense rubber or plastic. To give rigidity, the material is recoated with windings. They also perform a protective function, preventing destruction as a result of exposure to high temperatures and pressure, external mechanical influences in the form of twisting.

The flexible shower hose is equipped with conical or straight end nuts on both sides. One is for connecting to the shower head, and the other is for connecting to the faucet.

To replace the hose, you need to choose the most suitable option, since it is an integral part of the shower system. There are several main types, their difference lies in the material of the winding.

Metal winding

Metal shower hoses are tubing made of polymer, rubber, or plastic, encased in a metal-coated braid or springy body. Thanks to such a durable coating, it is possible to give the product resistance to bending or breaking.

Metal braided hoses are the most common because they are affordable and have a long service life. The optimal ratio of price and quality allows you to replace the part without much damage to the family budget.

Plastic winding

Hoses made of plastic can be made entirely of plastic, or the material can wrap around a high-strength rubber backing. The latter are able to withstand temperatures up to +80 degrees.

The operational technical characteristics of the mechanism are excellent; in tandem with a metal wire, they are able to exhibit the following:

  • long period of use;
  • high strength;
  • flexibility.

The negative qualities of the product include a predisposition to cracking and drying out. Therefore, it is not recommended to wind plastic hoses near the mixer after its use or expose it to warm or hot water for a long time.

Plastic components are produced with a spiral or smooth coating of chrome, white, transparent or colored material. Please note that the transparent plastic winding loses its external characteristics over time, as it begins to turn yellow due to chemical impurities in the water.

Innovative developments

Every year, plumbing accessories and accessories are improved, therefore, they serve as a worthy alternative to traditional plumbing. The innovative silicone layer (silicone) on the metal winding protects the metal from delamination and the harmful effects of corrosion, improves the performance of the main segments. Due to the characteristics of the material used, such a hose has excellent resilience and flexibility.

Some models are protected from twisting, this is achieved thanks to special bearings that are built into the end fittings. Thanks to this uncomplicated internal design, they are able to freely rotate around their axis.

To increase strength, some plastic accessories and components are reinforced with metal or nylon threads. The leaders in the domestic market are manufacturers from Germany, Italy and Hungary.

Popular models and manufacturers

Each manufacturer of fittings manufactures its products in whole series and design collections, which allows you to choose the right accessory for any style of bathroom design. The most popular and sought-after designs from well-known brands:

  • Silverflex from Grohe (manufacturing country - Germany). The basis of the product is plastic with a smooth surface. It has increased flexibility, making it easy to control the shower head during washing. Its edges are protected from creases, and it is also equipped with a rotating Anti-Twist cone, the surface of the product is chrome plated. The cord is not short, the length is 1.5 meters.
  • Hansgrohe Isiflex (manufacturer Germany). The accessory is made of plastic, the surface is smooth, has increased flexibility, which makes the washing process incredibly simple and comfortable. It is especially convenient to use it in a shower box or a booth, the watering can be rotated 360 degrees. The joints of the parts are protected from creases, this is ensured thanks to the rotating cone. The size of the rubber hose is 2 meters.
  • Tempesta Trio (Germany). Material - plastic, has a smooth glossy surface. It is also equipped with increased flexibility and protection against breaks and bends. The hose has a standard ½ inch thread and is 1.25 meters long.

There are many more models and manufacturers for every taste and budget. When choosing plumbing, it is recommended that you first familiarize yourself with the selection criteria.

How to choose the right design

The range of shower accessories and accessories for them is huge, but the quality does not always correspond to the functionality and price declared by the manufacturer. In the store, when choosing a hose, you should focus on the following criteria:

  • Manufacturer. German appliances are famous for their impeccable assembly and quality plumbing. But it is worth noting that they are also the most expensive, this is perhaps the only drawback. More affordable are Russian, Czech and Hungarian brands.
  • Material. The most reliable are those hoses that are made of silicone sheath and are in a metal case. The multi-layer structure prevents surface cracking. The most reliable shell is the usual metal corrugation.
  • Length. The ease of use of the accessory fully depends on this parameter. A short hose will be stretched, and a long one, on the contrary, will interfere. As a rule, the most convenient hose length is 1.7 meters.
  • Equipment. The connection points are equipped with a swivel cone or bearings. Products made in Germany have an Anti-Twist protective coating. It is important to study the quality of the joints themselves, they should not be pressed.
  • Appearance. Before buying, you should carefully inspect the hose from all sides. It should be free of sags at the joints, crooked threads and burrs. Heterogeneous color, uneven corrugation, thickenings are clear signs of inadequate quality of the product, you should refrain from buying it.

Please note that two rubber gaskets for the nuts are included with the hose. The packaging attached to the accessory indicates the manufacturer, the technical characteristics of the product: equipment, hose length, thread diameter and material of manufacture.

Shower set care, breakage prevention

As you know, it is more difficult to repair components than to prevent breakage. Long operation will ensure proper care of plumbing.

What not to do:

  • allow prolonged exposure to the hot water hose;
  • wind it around the mixer;
  • clean from plaque with chemicals with an aggressive composition or abrasive particles;
  • twist and/or twist.

These simple recommendations will allow you not only to choose the most suitable shower hose, but also to properly care for it, due to which its performance and appearance will be preserved. Please note that it is best to give preference to products with an antibacterial coating.

  1. Poor quality product.
  2. Incorrect assembly.
  3. operational wear.

The hose may be leaking or defective in the following places:

  1. Hose connections with mixer and diffuser.
  2. Connections of a rubber tube and plastic adapters.
  3. rubber tube.

I don’t know what the reason for the leak is for you, but I’m sure that you will find it in the table:

Well, now let's take a closer look at one of the most common causes of hose leakage - a rupture of a rubber tube and illustrate hose repair with photographs.

First, unscrew the nut that secures the hose to the mixer. Then, using a screwdriver, pull out the nozzle on which the rubber tube is put on:

In this case, a metal nozzle may look like this:

Next, you need to remove the rest of the rubber tube. At the same time, clean the nozzle from accumulated debris. Then carefully cut off the end of the torn tube and first put the nut, the removed sleeve on the hose, and then put the rubber tube tightly on the nozzle:

After that, the nozzle with the hose is tightly driven into the sleeve, the metal braid of the shower hose is put on the sleeve and the nut fastening to the mixer is put in place. Then the gasket is inserted and you can screw the watering can:

Note: if the rubber tube once broke, then most likely it will break again quickly enough, so with such a breakdown it is better to completely change the hose.

The faucet for a bathtub or shower cabin consists of a spraying watering can and a flexible hose connected to it in a protective sheath with two union nuts at the ends.

Such shower hoses create comfortable conditions for water procedures, when you can direct the watering can as it is convenient, and, if necessary, hang it on a special bracket. Thanks to the holder pre-mounted on the wall, it is possible to free your hands. If necessary, the mixer is simply removed from the bracket and continue to use it as usual.

A household shower hose consists of the following mandatory elements:

  • The inner tube through which water from the mixer is delivered to the watering can with a sprinkler.
  • A metal (sometimes polymer) sheath that protects the rubber tube from damage or kinks.
  • Two connecting fittings equipped with union nuts.

The latter elements have a special protective coating and are used to hermetically couple the hose to the shower head and bath faucet. Before repairing a damaged product, the fittings are disassembled first.

The simplest samples of shower hoses produced by the industry can be without an outer sheath.

These shower hoses are made of a thick rubber tube that does not require additional protection. At the same time, regardless of the design, the product must ensure uninterrupted flow of liquid into the watering can.

When choosing a product, pay attention to their differences in the following characteristics:

  • First of all, this is the length of the shower hoses.
  • Next comes the material from which their protective shell is made.
  • And finally, when choosing a hose suitable for a shower cabin, the design and quality of not only the shell itself, but also the chrome-plated union nuts are taken into account.

The choice of the first of these options depends on the specific operating conditions (taking into account the convenience of placing the hose on the bracket).

Before replacing a shower hose, try to buy a product with a margin in length (you can shorten it at any time).

Depending on the prestige of the model, which affects its cost, shower hoses can have a variety of protective sheath designs.

Well-known manufacturers from Germany "Grohe" and "Kaiser", for example, produce shower hoses of exclusively premium class. In the area of their connection with the watering can there is an additional thrust bearing, and their braid is combined, multilayer.

Breakdowns and repairs

Long-term and intensive use of shower attributes leads to wear and tear, and water leaks in certain places. Simultaneously with the flow of the shower hose, its pressure through the watering can noticeably decreases.

The reason for this is the destruction of the rubber tube at the junction with the watering can (water flows in the place where the tube bends more often). If this malfunction is detected, the repair of the shower hose can be done independently. A simple approach is to cut out the damaged area by shortening the hose. In a situation where a gap is found in the middle part, it will no longer be possible to do without its complete replacement.

To restore the shower hose with your own hands, you will have to prepare pliers, a screwdriver and scissors (it is also advisable to stock up on gaskets).

Flexible shower hose repair

Consists of the following:

  • Before you fix the hoses from the shower, you first need to disassemble the watering can itself. To do this, first of all, unscrew the chrome-plated union nut on the butt part.

It should be removed very carefully so as not to damage the factory coating.

  • Before disassembling the joint, first shift the steel braid to the side and find the gap.
  • After that, you need to remove the gasket and the metal nipple located nearby. To do this, use a flat screwdriver or a well-honed knife.
  • At the end of this operation, you should simply cut off the damaged part, making sure that the edge of the cut is even.

After the hose is partially dismantled and cut from the damaged side, it must be put back on the nipple. Masters advise preheating the rubber at the junction with boiling water, which will facilitate its pulling on the counterpart.

Then this assembly is assembled in the reverse order, and the repair of the shower hose can be considered complete.

In a situation where a malfunction is found in the middle part of the tube, before changing the hose in the shower, first measure its length so that when buying a new product, focus on this size.

If the cause of the leakage is a leak at the joint, the sealing element should be replaced or the union nut should be tightened more.

A conventional shower hose connected to a bathroom faucet consists of a rubber tube tucked into a protective sleeve made of twisted metal and two end fittings with union nuts. The industry also produces products in which there is no outer shell.

In such simple hoses, reliability and service life are determined by the parameters of the material used in their manufacture. Over time, the hose breaks, cracks, leaks. In this case, it needs to be repaired.

Types of faults

Any material eventually loses its elasticity in the docking zones. This is manifested in the fact that it first hardens, and then cracks and ruptures appear on it, causing leakage. If this defect is found, you should not rush to call a plumber, since in this case it is quite possible to fix the hose from the shower with your own hands.

Other causes of leaks are also known, namely:

  • depressurization of the joints of the rubber tube with a sprayer (or with a mixer) due to weak tightening of the union nuts on the fittings;
  • the shower hose leaks in the same places, but this is caused by the destruction of the sealing gasket (it is easiest to fix such a malfunction);
  • leakage in the central part of the hose.

Let's see how we can fix it all.

If cracks are found, the easiest way is to try to cut off the hardened part of the rubber tube (by shortening it) and try to restore the joint. In a situation where the flare nuts are loose, simply tighten them up and check the hose for leaks again.

If tightening does not help, this means that the seal at the junction is broken and the gasket should be replaced. In each of these cases, the repair of the hose will have its own characteristics.

Shower hose shortening

If cracks are found at the junctions, first of all, it will be necessary to disassemble the junction of the shower hose with the watering can, for which you will first need to completely unscrew the union nut.

Important! When dismantling the nut, you will need to be very careful not to scratch the chrome coating.

After that, it will be necessary to move the steel braid towards the center and inspect the docking area. If traces of destruction of the rubber tube are visible in this place, remove its end from the nipple and cut off the damaged part with ordinary scissors.

Then you can try to put the shortened hose back on (if this cannot be done right away, it is recommended to hold it in boiling water for a while). After that, well-heated rubber, as a rule, is easily pulled onto the nipple.

Upon completion of the repair, the entire product should be assembled in the reverse order and the shower turned on, checking the work.

Replacement of rubber and seal

If damage is found in the middle part of the tube, it must be completely updated, that is, replaced. But before removing the old rubber, first try to find out in the distribution network if it is sold separately from the hose. Otherwise, you will have to change the entire product complete with the outer shell, fittings and union nuts.

Note! Before going to the store, be sure to measure the length of the rubber tube (hose) and make sure that the purchased sample is not shorter.

In the event that, when examining the docking zone, it turned out that the cause of the leak is the destruction of the gasket, the hose can be repaired by simply replacing the sealing element of the fitting.

At the end of the repair, it remains only to turn the union nut by hand until it stops. When carrying out this operation, do not apply more force than it should be, otherwise the new gasket may be damaged.

The fight against weakening of pressure

All the malfunctions considered earlier are accompanied by a weakening of the fluid pressure inside the pipe channel, which is well felt during everyday use of the shower. But in certain situations, it happens that there is no leak, and the pressure in the hose still noticeably weakens.

This may be due to the following reasons:

  • a malfunction in the bath mixer, the malfunction of which leads to a weakening (quenching) of most of the pressure;
  • the divider mesh is clogged, which also affects the pressure of the outflowing jet;
  • the formation of a blockage inside the hose (this defect occurs extremely rarely).

In the first case, you should disassemble and examine the mixer, and then try to eliminate the detected malfunction. The dissecting grid should be thoroughly cleaned, and if this does not help, completely replace the watering can.

In the latter case (clogging), you can try to clean the rubber channel. However, this operation does not always succeed. Sometimes the elastic material is torn. If blockages or damage are found inside the plastic tube, it makes sense to completely replace the entire hose, especially since the cost of this product is relatively low.

Shower pipe repair

Repairs in an apartment usually affect all rooms. The bathroom is no exception, the work in it ends with the installation of plumbing in the shower. Often there are doubts when choosing these simple accessories. Since plumbing includes a faucet, faucet, watering can and shower hose. Frequent breakdowns make you call a specialist, but in some cases you can repair parts of the shower with your own hands. How to repair a shower?

Figure 1. After a breakdown, it is necessary to cut off the defective part of the hose.

Repair of a flexible pipe from the shower

At the moment, the quality of plumbing parts leaves much to be desired.

Cheap parts made in China are on sale. They often break down and need to be replaced. A similar shower hose has a low price. If you take it apart, you can see low-quality rubber that cracks and leaks after a few months of use. Surely, the manufacturer of a disposable hose earns by quickly replacing the manufactured product. But there is a problem with calling third-party specialists.

There is a way out of this situation. This is the purchase of good plumbing and the opportunity to fix the shower hose yourself. Repair is no tricky business. Let's see what's broken. In the case of a visible hole, everything is clear.

Need to disassemble first:

Figure 2. The notch on the flexible hose needs to be folded back.

  1. Unscrew the shower head.
  2. We take out the flexible part (rubber, silicone tube, flexible) and look for the part that needs to be repaired.
  3. After finding the breakage, cut off this part (Fig. 1).
  4. The fitting, removed from the broken part, we dress and fix it.
  5. After that, we put on a shower head.

In order to put the tube on the fitting, you need to stretch the shower hose (put a pencil or stick of a larger diameter into it), when the nipple enters, fix it. It will be enough to heat with hot water from the tap or pour over with boiling water. The rubber will shrink and the mount will be strong.

This is how easy it is to repair a flexible shower pipe. But there are also nuances. In the event that you examined the part and did not find a breakdown in the form of a hole, but is still flowing, you should completely disassemble the shower. Such a shower repair will take more time and effort. The problem may be a bad inner tube, because poor quality rubber can crumble or burst in many places. In this case, it is better to replace the shower tube.

If you need a quick repair of the shower pipe for a short period of use, then it is possible to repair the hose with a soldered fitting (disposable). In this case:

  1. We take the watering can.
  2. We take out a flexible hose and cut off the broken part of the tube (everything, as in the previous case).
  3. Next, make a small incision and bend the incised part. Then we wrap it with adhesive tape for plumbing work or glue it with plastic wrap (Fig. 2).
  4. We dress and fasten the watering can for the shower and you're done.

This method is not a quality repair of your shower, but it is suitable for an emergency. The hose will still need to be changed.
