Features of mosaic cladding in the interior. Mosaic in the interior of modern premises The use of glass mosaic in the living room

, countertops, mirrors, floor coverings and other surfaces. Sometimes they turn out to be real works of art. Well, if you're into handicrafts, then mosaic decor is your element, which may turn into a regular hobby.

Mirror

Your combat ammunition: a pencil, a clerical knife or a jigsaw (for cutting the base), liquid nails, wire cutters, putty grout for tiles, spatula, gloves, soft sponge and rags. You need to start with the selection of the foundation. Moisture resistant drywall(it is convenient to cut any shape from it according to a preliminary sketch), fiberboard or chipboard, OSB, plywood.

Then, with the help of liquid nails, a thin mirror sheet is glued to the surface of the base, so that there is a margin around framework 8-10 cm. Any ceramic shards, tiles, old crockery and different little shiny ones accessories from jewelry or children's sets. Important recommendation! Try not to use more than 4 shades in the design, otherwise you risk getting color dissonance.

A sketch is drawn with a pencil along the entire border of the base. You should not go too deep into painting, everything should be simple and schematic. Perhaps it will be some kind of curly floral pattern or geometric ornament. Then, depending on the traced details, large and small pieces of different colors are plucked from the ceramic raw material with wire cutters and laid out (without glue) on the base according to the sketch. When the drawing is laid out, you can apply glue. Acrylic-based liquid nails dry quickly enough, so after a few hours you can start grouting. For grouting, a gypsum mixture based on putty is used (it comes in different colors). We dilute the mixture with water in a ratio of 1: 1 to a creamy state, then evenly rub the seams with a spatula. With a damp sponge, remove the rest of the grout from the mosaic. The last step in the process is polishing the surface with a dry cloth. Everything. The finished mirror can be hung on the wall.

tabletop

In the same simple way, you can lay out the mosaic on the countertop, and when developing a sketch, ready-made templates on self-adhesive paper will help you. Upon completion of work for greater shine, you can rub the composition with wax. In practice, the uneven rough surface of the table is not always convenient, so the mosaic is often covered with a thick layer on top. glass. The glass "hood" will also hide any unevenness when using a mosaic of sea pebbles or CDs.

Mosaic on the wall

When laying the mosaic on the wall (in bathroom, on the kitchen as a working belt, for panels, in children's bedroom etc.) have their own characteristic nuances. Often, the mosaic is applied to the surface as a fragmentary finish, that is, with joint wall decor paint , plaster or tiles.

To simplify the process, you can use grid sheets (in the form of squares or rectangles) of bonded mosaics, such are sold in hardware stores with a ready-made pattern. The sheets are assembled like puzzles, and according to the technology they are laid like ordinary tiles. The question of price can be confusing. It's not cheap.

Before starting work, it is recommended to sort all stones in sizes and colors in boxes or containers to simplify further laying out. The mosaic requires a solid concrete base. Along the perimeter of the planned (excavation at a depth of up to 20 cm) and leveled (bubble level is used for this) area, formwork is laid out from a wooden block.

The site is covered with a layer of sand, gravel and another layer of sand and compacted tightly so that there is no subsidence. Then dry concrete mixture is poured and leveled with a rule. The concrete layer should not be thick, otherwise the pebbles will displace too large residues with their mass. The mixture is evenly sprayed with water from a spray bottle until a mud-like mass is formed, and the contour of the future pattern is marked with a stick. First, large stones are laid along the lines, and small pebbles are already placed in the allocated space.

Remember that in the hot season, the concrete mortar dries quickly, so do not write off preparing too large an area for mosaics. Keep a screwdriver nearby for those cases when naughty stones begin to “sink” or somehow sit crookedly, so that the mixture does not grab them in time to correct them. Wipe the dried mosaic with a damp sponge to remove excess mortar, and then be sure to take a picture of your masterpiece on your smartphone and brag to your friends on social networks!

16. Mosaic finish

Walls lined with tiles or mosaics are most often found in the kitchen and bathroom, as such materials are considered cold. However, the mosaic wall decoration in the interior of the living room looks impressive and stylish, and the abundance of upholstered furniture and carpets make the interior cozy and warm.

This type of facing material as a mosaic has a long history, because it has existed for more than two thousand years. However, even now it is used in the interiors of various rooms.

And this is mainly due to the fact that it has a magnificent and unusual appearance, and can also serve for a long time. Most people think that mosaic decoration is appropriate in public areas, but at home it can be applied in the bathroom or in the kitchen. In our opinion, this opinion is erroneous, and we will try to figure out whether a mirror mosaic is appropriate in the interior of a guest room, what types of mosaic exist and how it is used.

Varieties of mosaic

The mosaic in the interior attracts with its mystery and unusualness, shimmering with the brightest colors and filling the room with unusual light. But there are such types of mosaics that give the interior austerity and restraint. Let's see what types of such finishes exist.

Application of glass mosaic in the living room

Mosaic is not just pieces of regular or irregular shape, randomly assembled together. A panel is assembled from a mosaic, which can be an abstract drawing or a complete image. Therefore, the use of such a finish can be the most unpredictable. It all depends on your imagination or the designer who is trying to fit the mosaic into the interior of the room. Let's take a look at a few common uses.

  • When creating an accent wall.
  • When designing a fireplace area.
  • Laying out a mosaic partition or bar counter.
  • In the process of decorating a niche in the wall.

As for the interior style in which glass mosaic can be used, designers can skillfully fit it into most styles.

One of the most popular ways to freshen up the design of the living room is a mosaic panel depicting nature. In the living room, combined with the kitchen, you can lay out a still life from a mosaic. And if you prefer something more rigorous, then you can choose a mosaic portrait that resembles a black and white photograph, or even an abstract pattern.

Options for using coconut mosaic

Coconut mosaic in the living room is the most extraordinary pleasure. The interior in African style will be simply excellent. Such a mosaic can be used not only for wall decoration, but also for floor decoration, and the laid out area can be both small and large. Thanks to a special method of processing coconut shells, which contain 50% resin, mosaics are made that are highly resistant to external influences.

In addition, the surface of such a mosaic is smooth and has no seams. In the interior, it looks like a solid canvas. Another plus of this type of finish is that it is environmentally friendly and safe. Coconut shell mosaic has the ability to absorb noise and has thermal insulation, so it is not uncommon to lay out a floor from it, which becomes pleasant and warm. As for the palette of this mosaic, it can be from light (beige brown and ivory) to the darkest, like ebony.

Stone and ceramic mosaics - features of use in the living room

It is generally accepted that ceramic mosaic tiles in the interior are mainly suitable only for rooms with a difficult microclimate, such as a bathroom, kitchen, corridor. However, if we evaluate this material from an aesthetic point of view and foresee the artistic perspective of its use, it turns out that it can be very good for a living room.

Take, for example, the finishing of parts of horizontal and vertical surfaces in the living room in the process of creating accent elements of the interior. Ceramics tends not to obsessively reflect light, making the living room brighter. Two pluses appear, on the one hand, we partially correct the lack of space associated with the lack of natural light, and on the other hand, we draw attention to the elements of the room decoration with ceramic mosaics.

For the most comfortable area of the reception room, the one where the fireplace is located, a mosaic consisting of natural stone or its high-quality imitation is perfect. Stone mosaics on the fireplace or next to it on the wall look very impressive, organically fitting into classic or rustic interior compositions. In addition, such a mosaic brings additional comfort to the room, it seems as if each fragment of the stone mosaic exudes warmth and subtle aromas of nature.

If you decide to use natural stone when creating a mosaic, you will have to use the expensive services of specialists, since working with real stone is quite difficult. But if you use a self-adhesive flexible stone that imitates natural stone to create a mosaic composition, then you can do all the work yourself.

We decorate the living room with smalt mosaic

One and a half thousand years ago, smalt mosaic first became the decoration of Orthodox churches, but now it is used by designers to create amazing interior compositions for reception rooms and other residential and non-residential premises.

Smalt mosaic is made from quartz sand with the addition of potassium salt, resulting in an amazing material that is much superior in strength and beauty to glass. Smalt mosaic can be used to create a panel on the wall or as a decoration for some specific elements of the living room interior. True, it should be noted that smalt is a rather expensive material. Only wealthy people can afford 1×1 meter smalt panels, let alone larger compositions.

When creating a mosaic using smalt, designers go to the trick, mixing its pieces with glass. If such a mixture is carried out competently and talentedly, then the difference between a “pure” smalt mosaic and a smalt-glass one will not be noticeable. Smalt mosaic design or living room design using smalt mosaic is rapidly gaining popularity. Today it can be found in the most sophisticated and expensive interior compositions created by leading designers.

So, although mosaic is an ancient material for interior decoration, which has a lot of modern options, its use in the living room should be carefully thought out. One desire to lay out a wall or floor with a mosaic, just because you like it, is not enough. Such a finish must be correctly selected, it must be combined not only with other decorations of the room, but also with all interior items, furniture, and match the style. Only in this case you will achieve a harmonious and warm atmosphere, a cozy and comfortable environment.

The use of mosaics has very deep roots going back to ancient times. Previously, it was made of colored glass, but since then much has changed, the processes for making and laying mosaics are being improved, new types of this material appear. Today, decor such as small colored mosaics or modern mosaic tiles is available to everyone. Thanks to this material, you can create the most complex compositions, patterns and images. The use of mosaics in the interior of an apartment or house allows you to bring bright original notes to the design of a living room or kitchen, bathroom or hallway.

Mosaic use

Thanks to the mosaic theme, any room will look luxurious, original and unique.

Looks great not only colored mosaic wall- this material is also used for decorating furniture, and the mosaic on the tables looks especially harmonious. They trim it with bar racks, and arches, and columns.

Mosaic is one of the expensive materials. It is of high quality, a variety of colors and a long service life. Perhaps you should consider the design of the room so that the mosaic is present in the form of several elements. Even this will be enough to bring an interesting touch to the interior.

You can consider using mosaics in combination with other materials. With its help, you can highlight certain areas or make accents on some areas.

In the bathroom

A combination of mosaic and tile can be considered a good solution. From the mosaic you can lay out a panel. Walls lined with one color or using a smooth transition from one shade to another look beautiful. If the mosaic is diluted with mirror inserts, with the right lighting, everything will sparkle and create the effect of luxury and brilliance. Mosaic is used to decorate not only the walls, but also the floor. You can lay out a pattern or a picture that will enliven the interior.

In the rooms

The mosaic always looks original in the design of the walls of the living room or bedroom. It will be appropriate if the room is decorated in a retro or vintage style. The panel on the wall will look harmonious and emphasize the individuality of the ethnic or Moroccan style. A modern interior can also be complemented by such a finish, as long as the harmony of colors is observed.

Mosaic is great for updating furniture. For example, the colored surface of a coffee table will look very nice. No less original can look thanks to the use of this material and window sills.

In the kitchen

Often, when designing a work area, preference is given to mosaics instead of ordinary tiles. This solution will look good with any design style, and the kitchen will sparkle with new colors and create a mood.

You can make a mosaic apron of the same color, the scatter of bright inclusions will also look original, the use of two or three shades is also acceptable. Mosaic can be with a flat or concave surface.

In home

In the interior of the house, many use mosaic in the design of the fireplace. It will look good as a design to match the color scheme of the entire room, as well as colored blotches or colorful patterns.

Another suitable place for mosaics is a veranda, gazebo or garden. Here, too, you can add original patterns, arrange paths on the site, refresh garden furniture. You can also lay out a small fountain in the yard with a mosaic.

Mosaic types

Currently, there are many types of mosaics, which differ from each other in the material of manufacture, colors, performance characteristics. Such a variety makes it easier to decide which option to choose for decorating a bathroom or living room, kitchen or hallway.

metal

One of the new species that appeared not so long ago. The material from which this mosaic is made is stainless steel. It is not very thick, but very durable. Its weight is small, but it is very difficult to damage it. Corrosion to this material is not terrible, so it can be used to clad walls in rooms with high humidity - in the kitchen and in the bathroom.

Another option is aluminum mosaic. This metal is softer, and therefore rounded surfaces can be easily decorated with such a mosaic. This species is also not afraid of water.

Moroccan

Moroccan style implies a large number of patterns - voluminous and flat. Mosaic in this case occupies one of the main places. This style is easily combined with others, which is why it is popular.

The use of mosaics of different colors and textures creates a riot of colors. The main colors are often chosen brown, terracotta, ocher. Against their background, fuchsia, yellow, orange, emerald, blue, turquoise look advantageous as additional shades. It is preferable to collect panels from small tiles. It can be both traditional Moroccan motifs and other subjects.

Smalt

One of the most expensive, because it is based on natural glass. The color scheme is determined by bright and saturated colors. With good lighting, individual fragments seem to glow from the inside. Any interior wins when decorated with such material. Even small surfaces that are accentuated will add bright notes to the design of the room. Not all consumers can afford such a design due to the high cost of the material.

glass

It is in demand due to the combination of low price and variety of colors. There are different types - transparent, silver, platinum, gold, matte. To reproduce a variety of original shades is obtained through the use of different layers of foil.

Due to its strength, frost resistance and heat resistance, the mosaic is suitable for decoration of any premises. Thanks to this mosaic, a fireplace, countertop, floors, walls will also look beautiful.

Mirror

A type of glass mosaic. It is distinguished by its unique feature of reflecting light and objects. This allows you to visually expand the space. This mosaic is considered more capricious compared to other types. It is quite fragile, you need to use detergents with care, there should be no scouring powders. Constant dampness leads to clouding of such canvases, so the use of such lining in the bathroom will be an unsuccessful solution. Conversely, the design of certain areas in the rooms will look interesting.

Stone

This mosaic has many variations, which allows you to decorate the premises in an elegant style and ennoble the local area. Wall cladding is carried out both with expensive materials and with simple pebbles. Both look original, despite the significant difference in price.

You should pay attention to what kind of surface will be faced- floor, walls or countertop. Each type of work has its own mosaic, which is distinguished by its operational characteristics. For the floor, for example, it is recommended to choose a more damage-resistant and durable option that can withstand heavy loads. For walls, it is desirable to use a lighter coating that will hold better.

Various types of stone can be used to compose panels: marble, malachite, tuff, someone even uses brick. It all depends on the idea to be implemented.

The mosaic created from raw stone, which is interesting for its natural shape, looks original. The laying process is very laborious, but the result is worth it.

The elite species include a mosaic of onyx, lapis lazuli, jasper. Walls decorated with these stones look incredibly luxurious. With such a design, it is not difficult to feel like in a palace.

Onyx is considered one of the most beautiful stones used in decorating rooms. A rich color palette, delightful patterns and a glowing effect make it a leader in this field. The color can be orange, gray, blue, green, red, pink, lilac, amber, beige, brown.

Amber looks no less beautiful. You can also make beautiful panels from it. The color palette is diverse - from milky to dark brown shades.

coconut

An unusual material that belongs to natural species. In addition to its original decorative look, it is famous for its strength, durability, and, of course, environmental friendliness. Such a mosaic is resistant to damage, is not affected by moisture and fungus, so in addition to interesting solutions in the design of rooms, it can also be used to create an original design in the bathroom or in the kitchen.

The material is easily glued to the surface using conventional parquet adhesive. The advantages of this type of material include the fact that it is easy to wash, it perfectly retains heat and absorbs noise. In addition, it is fire resistant.

ceramic

Reminds in appearance the familiar ceramic tiles. Differences can be in size and shape - square or rectangular. Mosaic can be made using various effects: glazed, with small cracks (craquelure), with bright bursts of different colors, with imitation of bumps. Unglazed mosaic has a porous surface.

Ceramic mosaic is successfully used in the design of any premises, both for interior and exterior.

Wooden

Unusual and original solution. Such a mosaic will look harmonious when decorating a home in loft, hunting, techno styles.

Most often, a mosaic is a mixture of wood of different species and shades. There are also very unusual forms, for example, in the form of transverse sections of the trunk.

Rare variants

These can be safely attributed to the diamond mosaic. This is rather a type of needlework, but it will undoubtedly decorate any interior and become its highlight. Usually this is a kit that has a diagram with an adhesive layer. Acrylic rhinestones are applied to this base with tweezers. This is a very painstaking work, but the end result is worth it, because such a picture will decorate any wall.

Among the rare species, a golden mosaic is noted. It is clear that the use of real gold would make it prohibitively expensive, although such a mosaic was used to decorate palaces. Now the golden effect can be achieved through the use of gold foil in the production of tiles, but glass-based mosaics are made.

Mother-of-pearl mosaics also belong to the elite materials. This natural material is distinguished by its fragility. It is contraindicated to lay it on the floor, but the walls finished with it in bathrooms and pools look very harmonious. Performance characteristics allow you to decorate these rooms with such a mosaic without any fear, because this material is not afraid of water, high temperature and high humidity.

Combination of materials

Mosaic is also unique and convenient in that it can be easily combined with other materials as you like, highlighting certain areas in the room. There is an opportunity to be creative yourself and lay out certain compositions using various combinations.

You can combine metal and glass mosaics, you can add ceramic to them. Or use ceramic and glass at the same time. It is quite acceptable to combine ceramics and wood, and wooden and coconut will also look advantageous. In masonry, individual elements and sections may well contain metal, gold, and mother-of-pearl.

There are a lot of combination options, it all depends on what kind of interior you need to create and what ideas you would like to implement.

Laying methods

  • The first stage of work must necessarily be the alignment of the walls with putty or through the use of drywall. If there are any distortions, they must be eliminated by preparing a mixture of cement and sand. This is followed by priming the surface - this procedure also cannot be neglected.
  • Attach the mosaic to the surface using ordinary tile adhesive. Large areas should not be treated with an adhesive solution at once - it dries very quickly, which means that adhesion to the surface will be insufficient. Therefore, glue should be applied to small areas. The mixture is distributed evenly using a tool with teeth. Then the mosaic sheet should be leaned against the wall and slightly pressed against it. At the last stage, you need to wipe the seams.
  • If it is decided to cover the pool area with mosaics, you need to choose a waterproof adhesive, the same applies to grouting. The mixture in the seams should be laid carefully, trying not to stain the mosaic. Two days are given to dry the seams. Water can be poured into the pool no earlier than after three weeks.

As practice shows, a huge amount of the most diverse mosaics and the ability to combine one material with another provide many opportunities to decorate any room and make it unique.

In the following video, you can see how to choose and lay the mosaic correctly.
