How to fix a big hole in a door. A hole in the door: how and with what it can be repaired

Hollow interior doors require more careful handling, due to their lightweight design, compared to solid ones. Well, if you didn’t protect such a door from impact, say, when you transferred it, then a good dent or even a hole will certainly appear in it. Of course, you can buy a new one, they are not so expensive, but in any case it is much cheaper to fix it yourself.

Hollow door repair with pattern restoration

So, the entire repair and restoration of a hollow door can be divided into five main stages:
  1. Filling with mounting foam voids under the dent to give strength to the place for further processing.
  2. Surface putty.
  3. Making a stencil with the original wood pattern.
  4. Restoration of the pattern on the surface of the door.
  5. Painting.
So, we remove the door from the hinges. We put it on stools or other even elevation, with the damaged place up.

We fill the voids with mounting foam

To fix the dent and fill the holes, we will use a universal mounting foam, which is used in construction and repair.

If the hole does not have open slots or holes, then they must be made by yourself, using a drill and a screwdriver.

The diameter of the drill, take a little more than the tube of the foam bottle.

We fill the space under the crack.

Let the foam harden. Usually this takes a day.

After hardening, we cut off the foam protruding from the holes and cracks flush.

We grind, removing paint from the restored area, making it smooth and even.

We putty the surface

When the surface is prepared, we proceed to putty, having previously primed the place of application.
There are special requirements for putty, it must be epoxy-based in order for the surface to be restored to be durable. It is not difficult to buy or cook it yourself.
We use a rubber spatula.

We putty, filling in all the bumps and potholes.

It may be necessary to apply several layers to obtain the desired result.

Let it dry and then move on to the next step.

We make a form with a pattern

We find on the same door a plot of a similar size with a good texture of the pattern.

We gnaw it with rails.

And in order to fix everything and seal a kind of bath, we coat it with plasticine, clay or other plastic material.

Pour liquid rubber (or silicone rubber) into the resulting bath. Please note that the door should lie very evenly.

Distribute evenly over all surfaces. It is not necessary to make a very thick layer, somewhere around 5-7 mm.

We leave and wait for hardening. The time can be found in the instructions for use.

When the time has come, remove the sides, peel off the layer from the door.

The result should be a clear shape on a piece with rubber.

Restoring the wood pattern on the door

We make a side, about a millimeter thick, around the damaged area.

We take epoxy-based glue, mix the components. Apply the required amount to the area inside the frame.

Repair of interior doors can be done by everyone. To do this, you just need to arm yourself with the tool and knowledge. You can repair any doors made of MDF, fiberboard and chipboard (veneered and laminated), natural wood. You can carry out a lot of manipulations with them: seal with putty, put a patch, cut, regrind and tint.

Causes of problems

Mechanical damage occurs due to careless operation or installation:

  • scratches and dents are a common occurrence in families with small children;
  • moving or falling objects sometimes results in holes in fiberboard doors.

Due to improper installation, they face such difficulties:

  • skew;
  • bad connection;
  • friction.

The tree is hygroscopic - it easily absorbs moisture and releases it. In this regard, the violation of production technology and operating conditions leads to the following unpleasant consequences:

Correction of mechanical damage

To repair minor damage to an interior door with our own hands, we need:

  • putty or wax pencil;
  • a piece of felt

Minor scratches and dents almost always occur after a short period of use. They are covered with a special wax pencil, which can be easily purchased on the building materials market. The color of the pencil should match the shade of the doors. The place of termination is rubbed with a piece of felt.

How to repair dents and chips on wooden interior doors

To seal dents on wooden products, we suggest the following: a piece of wood is hollowed out with a chisel exactly corresponding to the size of the dent and, smeared with glue, applied to the recess. The junction is pressed with a clamp if the damage is on the edge. If the patch is in the middle of the door leaf, it must be placed on a flat surface, covered with a board of a suitable size and pressed with a heavy object. The protruding sections of the patch are cleaned with a chisel and polished with coarse and then fine sandpaper. Paint over with suitable paint, open with varnish.

Do-it-yourself interior chipboard door repair

To repair damage to the surface of veneered chipboard, use veneer, matched by color and texture. It is necessary to remove the damaged piece with a chisel and glue a new one. It is easier to fix the defect if the veneer is tangentially cut (wavy, twisted structure), then the repair is not very noticeable. With a radial cut (straight, parallel lines), it is more difficult to correct, as it is difficult to match the pattern. Clamp the place of gluing in the same way as in the example above.

Restoration of holes in fiberboard doors

Broken fiberboard doors can be repaired with your own hands by inserting a ventilation grill from the bottom of the product. If a hole has formed from above, then an inlay is made of a similar material, glass, etc. A symmetrical hole is cut out, the ends of which are upholstered with wooden bars to close the void. They insert a pre-prepared wooden or MDF panel (available on sale), lay the insert and fix it with another panel on the reverse side, hammering it with pins.

We fix the shortcomings made during improper installation

  1. If the door does not open well or friction occurs, the excess is removed from the edge with a planer, sanded, painted and varnished. The gap between the frame and the doors should be no more than 1.5 - 2 mm.
  2. If the door bounces when closed, the cause may be that it rests against a quarter of the frame. In this case, the door leaf or frame is cut. Also, the problem may lie in the installation of hinges on the door.
  3. Door settling can be repaired by placing washers on the top and bottom door hinge pins.

We eliminate manufacturing defects with our own hands

  1. A sticky door is mainly the result of unfair manufacturing and to resolve the situation, contact the manufacturer. But, if he turned out to be not decent, he will have to repair it himself. In this case, it is necessary to disassemble the product into parts, sand the entire coating to bare wood, and clean off the remaining glue at the joints. Having smeared the joints with glue, alternately connect the parts, clamping them with clamps. The doors are then repainted and varnished.
  2. If the doors are made of damp material, they subsequently dry out in a dry room and gaps form, the door does not fit snugly against the frame or does not close at all. In this case, a bar of the required size is glued to the edge, then it is aligned in size with the door leaf, sanded and coated with the necessary paint and varnish products.

From time to time, you have to correct the shortcomings of the interior and do-it-yourself repair of wooden doors is one of the points. The fact is that such objects in the house are subject to significant mechanical and other influences. This is especially true of input structures and those that are often in contact with moisture. In this regard, periodic updating of the coating can significantly extend the life of the door, if repair is carried out in accordance with accepted rules.

Over time, any wooden doors need repair.

Possible problems and their causes

During operation, the door can suffer from almost anything. This also applies to shock, scratches, chemical factors and ultraviolet radiation. All this has to be fixed sooner or later with your own hands or to make a complete replacement of the canvas, which not everyone can afford. Let's look at what problems can arise with a wooden door:

  • Cracks. Usually this happens due to the drying of wood, changes in moisture and temperature adversely affect it, especially with insufficient processing.
  • Large gaps. May occur due to the drying of the canvas or a change in its position relative to the box.
  • Mashing. Swelling of wood at high humidity, distortions in the loops or displacement of the box.
  • Peeling of the coating. This problem is relevant for doors that were additionally lined with some material, such as veneer or laminate. Paint and varnish can also peel off over time.
  • Box loosening. A large load on the structure over time leads to a change in its position and weakening of the fasteners. It is also possible due to the destruction of the mounting foam.
  • Rotting. Constant contact with moisture, germs and poor antiseptic treatment destroy natural wood.
  • Chips. They are formed during impacts, especially in the lower part of the ends and in the corners.

Cracks are the most common wood problem.

If you do not plan to change the door and self-repair is beyond your power, you can give the structure for restoration.

Box repair

The most undesirable problem is the destruction of the box, but you can deal with this yourself if you make repairs in time and close all the cracks. To do this, you will need to temporarily remove the canvas from the hinges. Assess the extent of structural failure and identify the most vulnerable areas. Distortions are easy to notice if you use a building level, plumb lines and a square. Make appropriate notes and get to work.

To eliminate the skew, it is necessary to set the door frame according to the level

First you need to remove the trim and level the loot. If the foam crumbles, scrape off the old layer and re-foam. For additional reinforcement, the side slats are equipped with dowels. To do this, drill several holes in them along the entire length and drive them into the wall. If we are talking about a load-bearing wall, the repair is somewhat complicated. You will have to carefully disassemble the box, drill holes with a puncher, and then re-install it. After you need to close up the traces of interference with special mastic.

In some cases, it may be necessary to re-foam the door frame

Eliminate the shortcomings of the wood canvas

Much more problems can arise during operation directly with the canvas itself, however, it is much easier to fix them. Let's look at how to repair the canvas of wooden doors with your own hands if its surface is covered with scratches and cracks. To do this, you will need wood putty, you can find it in almost any hardware store.

Since a wooden door often has a certain shade of rock, you need to choose the mastic of the appropriate color. You can use the grout, which is used when sanding parquet. Carefully fill in the damaged area and rub the dried material with sandpaper.

Cracks and scratches can be puttied with a special compound

Almost the same as a crack, you can close up a hole in a wooden door. In case of significant damage, mounting foam is additionally used. Doing it yourself is not at all difficult - first the damaged area is foamed, then putty is applied and rubbed off. Repeat the procedure until the surface is completely level.

A small hole can be masked with dowels. To do this, the canvas needs to be drilled a little at the place of the hole, and then the trimmed dowel, planted on glue, is driven into it and the surface is carefully sanded.

But in order to get rid of the gaps, you will need a bar according to the size of the canvas, it is stuffed from the problem side. When mashing, you can process the door with a planer. And if it's about the hinges, put a rubber gasket under them at the junction of the halves.

Fiberboard repair

Now let's look at how you can repair a fiberboard door. This material is thinner and more flimsy, therefore, the corners of the canvas often suffer, in which case the defect can be repaired using a small piece of plywood. Cut off the damaged part in such a way that you can easily substitute your workpiece in this place, you can glue it or use small carnations without a hat.

And how can you patch up a hole in a fiberboard door with your own hands? If we are talking about a broken part, you can use a wire, a hook is made from it, with which the broken part of the fiberboard is hooked, then both edges are treated with wood glue or PVA and pressed against each other. After drying, clean the seam and process the top with a fixative. You can similarly make a patch by cutting out a square of identical shape from fiberboard and inserting it into place of the cut damage.

If large holes need to be repaired, the door leaf will need to be repainted.

If the hole is quite large and there is no way to seal it, use the same method as for wood. Repair is carried out using mounting foam, volcanic rubber, putty and sandpaper zero.

Chipboard repair

A common problem with chipboard doors is soaking and delamination, how to repair such a door with your own hands? To do this, you will need glue and a syringe. The fabric is recommended to be removed from the hinges. Using a syringe, pour glue into the structure of the delaminated material, then press the sidewalls and put the door under the press. When the glue dries, cover the edge with protective tape to prevent re-destruction.

Delamination is the most common problem with chipboard doors.

Chipboard doors are not very reliable, they are not recommended for use in rooms with a high level of humidity.

decoration

You need to complete the door repair by restoring the coating, this can be done in several ways:

  • painting;
  • stain;
  • cladding with other material.

If we are talking about a wooden door, repairs are best done using already tinted putty, in which case it will be enough to open it with varnish. You can update the surface with a stain. Be sure to treat the door leaf with a water-repellent antiseptic. If we are talking about a painted canvas, there should be no problems at all, the main thing is to choose the same color of the composition. If you decide to patch the hole with a patch, you can apply a masking pattern over it.

Door defects can be easily masked with a pattern or sticker

For chipboard, an excellent way out of the situation is to replace the front cover; laminate is usually used for this purpose. However, wooden doors can also be updated by lining them with veneer or film, at the same time you will be able to repair minor defects.

High-quality repairs will allow you to close up visible flaws and extend the life of the structure as a whole.

This problem can happen in every home. But do not rush to run to the store for a new door! I propose to read, consider the causes and ways to solve this situation.

Possible reasons

Damage may occur due to impact, scratches, chemicals, UV radiation. Exit - repair or replacement. But buying a new door is not for everyone. Before proceeding with the repair, we will establish the exact cause. They are different: cracks, gaps, rubbing, peeling of the coating, loosening of fasteners, decay (typical for basements, cellars).

Troubleshooting

If there are a lot of scratches and cracks on the door, they can be removed with the help of an improvised tool - wood putty. It is advisable to pick it up to match the door, apply it to the damaged surface and rub it with sandpaper.

Holes are closed in the same way. But if the recess is large, use mounting foam: first, the area is foamed, a layer of putty is applied on top and rubbed.
If a narrow hole is drilled to the desired size, a dowel can be used. Such a wooden product is driven into a recess and the surface is ground.
To avoid gaps, a bar is selected that repeats the size of the canvas and is stuffed into the problem area.

Corners are often damaged. In this case, they are removed, and plywood blanks are put in their place. If the section is broken, you can make a hook out of wire, use it to connect the edges of the hole, process them with wood glue and press them together. You should wait for drying, clean the joint and cover with a fixative on top. You can cut a patch from fiberboard and attach it to the hole. If the scale of the site is too large, the option for an ordinary wooden door is suitable.

Most often, chipboard owners are faced with their soaking and delamination. This is how holes appear. Glue and a syringe will come in handy in the repair. We set the door in a horizontal position, pour glue into the recess, connect the edges and cover with a press from above. After drying, it is required to process the edge with a protective tape to avoid recurrence.

To repair this type of door, a hole is cut around the hole. Usually, a little more than herself. It is recommended to chamfer to a depth of about 0.5 cm. In order to save mounting foam, the recess is stuffed with paper. After it dries, the excess protruding sections are cut off. Epoxy resin is applied to a flat surface. After hardening, the surface is covered with wood putty, which, subsequently, is rubbed with sandpaper. Then the primer is applied to the wood. Coloring at will.

Decor restoration

The final chord is the restoration of the coating with varnish, paint, stain. Tinted putty is a great choice for a wooden door. It needs to be varnished. Stain is popular: it deeply impregnates and stains wood for a long time. Chipboard doors are lined with laminate. First, do not forget to coat the door leaf with a water-repellent agent. Facing with veneer or film will get rid of minor defects.

Instructions on how to repair the doors in which a hole has formed and get rid of other defects will help you to spend your leisure time usefully and save a significant amount of money.

Repairing an MDF door is a very interesting activity. Structurally, it consists of a frame on which MDF sheets are glued. The frame is usually made from timber. The door is hollow from the inside, so it is light and not very strong.

Repairing an MDF door is no more difficult than fixing a "beetle" on the back of your favorite car. Although the easiest way, of course, is to buy a new one. But when finances sing romances and there is simply not enough money for a new one, folk ingenuity comes to the rescue.

The described repair methods will undoubtedly help you save a significant amount of money that you would have to pay for a new one.

When choosing the materials that you will use, you need to consider that you need to use those that are designed to work with wood, and not metal products.

Repairing an MDF door is not difficult at all. Before you start, you need to decide how much damage has been done to it. Depending on it, two types of repair can be distinguished:

  1. Scratch repair.
  2. Hole repair.

How to remove scratches

When repairing scratches on a door, you may need the following tools and materials:

  1. Sandpaper (marked from 150-200).
  2. Wood putty.
  3. Spatula for putty.
  4. Ground for wood.
  5. Enamel on wood (special two-component paint is used for MDF).
  6. Paint brush.

To remove scratches from the surface of an MDF door, use oil-free colored wax chalk to touch up small scratches, crevices and small holes.

First you need to sand the scratch and the area around it about one centimeter with sandpaper. Then you need to clean the cleaned area of \u200b\u200bthe door from dust and small wooden particles.

The next step is to apply wood putty to the cleaned area, and then use a spatula to remove its remnants and at the same time try to make the surface perfectly even. After the putty dries, it must be re-cleaned in order to even out the remaining irregularities. Clean up with fine sandpaper.

It should be noted that putty should be applied to the MDF surface very carefully, trying not to make new scratches. To avoid this, you need to use rubber spatulas.

Then, on the treated area, apply an even layer of primer on the tree and wait for it to dry. After the primer has dried, we cover the entire door with an even layer of enamel (paint) on wood.

How to remove a hole

When repairing a hole, you must have the following materials and tools:

To repair the door, you will need the following tools: hammer, saw, planer, chisel, screwdrivers, pliers.

  1. Construction knife.
  2. Newspapers or something similar.
  3. Mounting foam.
  4. Polyester or epoxy resin (both can be purchased at any car market).
  5. Sandpaper (marked from 150-200).
  6. Wood putty.
  7. Putty knife.
  8. Ground for wood.
  9. The paint that was indicated for the first case.
  10. Paint brush.

When repairing a hole, you first need to cut a hole that will be slightly larger than itself. The easiest way to do this is with a utility knife. In this case, if possible, it is necessary to try to make a chamfer to a depth of about 0.5 cm.

Then from the inside, along the edges of the hole, you need to fill it with newspapers or just paper. If this is not done, then when filling the door, a very large amount of mounting foam may be needed. After that, the hole must be filled with mounting foam. As soon as the mounting foam dries, the protruding part of it must be cut off to get a flat surface.

A polyester or epoxy resin must be applied to the resulting surface to form a solid surface. This operation is best done with rubber gloves on, since the resin sticks easily when it comes into contact with the skin, and it can only be removed with a solvent. And the solvent, in turn, like the resin on the skin of the hands, can cause irritation.

As soon as the resin hardens, it is necessary to apply wood putty on it. The dried putty must be cleaned with sandpaper to get a smooth and even surface. Paper with the markings slightly above should be used.

After stripping the putty, it is required to apply primer on wood. It is best to do this several times with a time interval of at least 20 minutes. After the primer has dried, the selected paint must be applied to the surface of the entire MDF door.

It should be noted that the primer is best applied with a small paint brush: this will help to avoid streaks.

As can be seen from the foregoing, repairing an MDF door is not so difficult. And the time spent on do-it-yourself repairs compensates for a significant amount of money.
