We ordered a wrought iron fence, a gate and a wicket from the Tandem-K company on the recommendation of friends. Everything was made well for us, everything turned out to be the right height, the forging was done with high quality. The calculation of the cost of our order was made immediately after the measurement, and after installation, the total amount did not change. The fence stands exactly, we have no complaints about the quality of the installation.

The front door in a private house / cottage is exposed to aggressive environmental influences. The visor will partly protect the door from destruction. There are many mounting options for these structures. In this article, you will learn how to make a canopy over the porch so that it is a beautiful and reliable decoration of the house that properly performs its main functions.

The main functional purpose of the visors:

  • Protect the front door from precipitation and the scorching sun.
  • Provide comfort to the homeowner. For example, it is more pleasant to open the castle under a canopy, especially in bad weather.
  • Decorate the exterior of the house.

Most often, the owners of private houses make visors to order. If you also do not have time to make this design, then you can do the same. But if necessary, save the family budget, you can make a visor with your own hands. Be that as it may, in order for your visor to be of high quality and meet your needs, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the varieties of visors and their features.

If you decide to purchase this particular coating option for arranging the visor, then buy a higher quality and thicker corrugated board. It is much easier to work with it than with metal tiles and metal.

If you decide to make a visor from, then remember that its color and structure must match the roofing material of the roof. The difference in color and texture, however slight, will be very noticeable.

It is best to make a visor from a metal tile at the stage of covering a house or other building, on the front door to which you decide to make a visor. In this case, you will be able to make a visor from the remnants of metal tiles from the roof of the roof.

Bituminous tiles or other similar roofing material, even roofing material of a domestic manufacturer, can also act as a roofing material for a visor.

This refers to the manufacture of a wooden frame. The same polycarbonate, metal tile, sheet metal, slate, etc. can be used as a roofing material. For old-style houses, such a visor is best suited. In addition, among the buildings for the exterior of which a wooden canopy structure is suitable are log houses, restored huts and buildings made in the half-timbered style.

The best design solution would be a visor, the frame of which is made of forging. It will serve as a worthy decoration of the house. However, this design will cost you a pretty penny. Forged canopy can be combined with roofing materials such as polycarbonate, tiles and even plastic.

The forged visor is quite heavy, so in order for it to serve for a really long time, you need to install it correctly.

Forging is suitable for almost any design, as it can consist of both coarse and refined elements. If there are already forged elements on the plot, then the visor should be made in the same style with them.

To make such a design, you will need a list of materials:

  • Cornice plank.
  • Gutter.
  • Metal corners.
  • Adjacency plank.
  • Pipe.
  • Bars.
  • Profiled / flexible tiles.
  • Anchors, self-tapping screws and screws.

Of the tools you will need the following:

  • Welding machine.
  • Yardstick.
  • Hacksaw / grinder.

Before starting the manufacture of the visor, you need to sketch its sketch. To build a very specific canopy, you need to make certain measurements, such as the width and length of the porch. Add another 60 cm to the resulting figure. This will be the width of your design. To get the length of the canopy, you need to measure the distance from the front door to the end of the porch, adding another 15–20 cm to this figure. The height of the canopy is calculated depending on the architecture of the house.

The slope of the visor should be about 20º.

Using this data, you can draw a sketch on paper or in a special program on a computer to scale.

Cut metal corners according to the project. The length of the rafters from the corners is equal to the height of the slope. From the corners you also need to make struts and wall beams. The frame parts are interconnected using a welding machine. The frame is fixed above the porch.

Fix the wall beam. This is done with stainless steel screws, and anchors are used to fasten the struts. Make a crate from the bars by installing it on the rafters. If corrugated board is used as a roofing material, then there should be a distance of 30 cm between the slats. For flexible tiles, you need to prepare a continuous crate. Roofing material will subsequently be laid out on it.

You can fix the flexible tile with self-tapping screws. Flexible shingles are laid with an overlap, and not end-to-end.

Now you need to fix the metal bar adjoining the top of the slope. On its lower side, you need to attach the cornice strip, and then connect and install the gutter and pipe.

To make such a design is not difficult even for an inexperienced person in construction. The finished frame can be purchased at a hardware store or built independently.

As in the previous case, before starting work on the manufacture of an arched visor, it is necessary to take measurements and draw a sketch.

  1. Make a frame out of 12-16 mm square tube or aluminum tube. Bend the pipe along the radius of the arched canopy. You will need to make 2 identical arcs.
  2. Connect the arcs with straight pipe segments at both ends. To make the frame of the arched visor more rigid, weld a connecting beam onto it from the inside.
  3. Then weld the canopies to the rear arc. With their help, the visor will be attached to the wall of the house.
  4. Now clean the frame from rust and scale. Prime it and paint it.
  5. Install the arched structure above the porch with screws.
  6. Fix the polycarbonate with self-tapping screws.

If you are making a canopy over the porch of a one-story house, then make it so that the edges of the overhangs protrude 20–30 cm above the porch. Thus, the possibility of water / snow getting into the place where the canopy is attached to the wall will be excluded, which will extend its operational life.

A gable visor is more difficult to make. But it provides the best protection against slanting rain. And if necessary, it will be easier to clean it from snow. The gable visor is stiffer than its counterparts, therefore it has a high level of wind protection.

First you need to take measurements and sketch. Then you should calculate the dimensions of the triangular brackets and the crate.

The final result of the manufacture of the visor depends entirely on the accuracy of the measurements. Therefore, this stage of work should not be taken lightly.

  • Make 2 brackets. They can be metal or wood. To do this, connect two perpendicular beams to each other and fix them with a brace at an angle of 45–60º.
  • Fasten the brackets at a distance that would be equal to the width of the canopy. Attach the vertical beams of the resulting bracket to the wall, level and secure with 3-4 stainless steel screws.
  • If the visor must be supporting, then it is not necessary to make brackets. Instead, you need to install metal / wooden poles. Dig holes for the posts at the required distance from each other. Make a sand cushion in the pit, tamp it down. To make the sand shrink, lightly wet it with water. Install the post and fill with concrete. The upper ends of the pillars are connected by load-bearing beams.
  • Make rafters from wooden bars / edged boards. If the visor is small, then two pairs of rafters will be enough for you. Fasten the rafter legs together with crossbars. Then fix the rafters on the upper beams of the brackets and install the ridge beam.
  • Make a crate. It can be made from board / timber / plywood. The choice of material is optional.
  • Install gutter hooks.
  • Lay the roofing material in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Now you need to install the bar adjacent to the wall and the wind bars to the front of the gable canopy. They, among other things, will protect the structure from moisture and snow.
  • Now you need to install the gutter and eaves bar. Remember that the bottom edge of the bar must be lowered into the gutter. Fasten the drainpipe.

Before installing wooden structural elements, each of them must be treated with antiseptics, which will significantly increase their service life.

So, depending on the type of visor and your skills in working with the tools listed in the article, you can make a visor yourself. If, after reading the instructions, you realized that these works are too tough for you, then it’s better to order a ready-made visor. Have questions on the topic? Ask our expert. In the provided video, you can clearly learn about the intricacies of making a canopy over the porch:

A photo

In this photo gallery, you will see a lot of interesting ideas for making a visor:

Schemes

If you decide to make a visor yourself, then the diagrams below will help you design your own visor model:

A canopy over the entrance to the building, a balcony or a gate performs a dual role. It protects the opening from atmospheric factors and is part of the decor of the building (or site), even considered almost its key detail. But no matter which of the functions the owner considers a priority, it is imperative that the most acceptable materials and scheme be chosen for the door visor.

There are many engineering solutions, since this element of the facade of the house is not regulated by any regulatory documents (SNiP, GOST). And this allows not only to draw up your own original drawing, but also to optimize costs. When deciding how to make a canopy over the door so that it has maximum functionality and at the same time is a decoration of the house, you should follow a simple algorithm.

Charting

The complexity of manufacturing and installation largely depends on the type of visor. It is the configuration of its coating that determines which materials it is more appropriate to use for it. When choosing an acceptable shape and size, a number of points should be considered.

  1. Climate features. First of all, how snowy are the winters in the region. Nast (glaciation) creates a significant load, therefore, when installing a visor, you need to pay attention to the strength of the structure.
  2. The location of the house. Whether other objects cover it (belt, adjacent buildings, and so on) matters in terms of wind load. If the wind rose adversely affects the stability of the canopy, then you should choose schemes with low windage, and the originality, "exclusivity" of the visor in this case should fade into the background.
  3. Maintainability. Unfortunately, few people think about the fact that any structure located outside the building is subject to maximum wear. Before you make a canopy over the front door, you should evaluate how difficult it will be to put it in order (restor or repair).
  4. Appointment of a canopy. If you want to protect only the door from bad weather, then a small visor is enough. Larger models can cover the terrace, turning it into a cozy gazebo at the entrance; there are drawings of structures that stretch from a private house to a gate (garage), forming a kind of covered alley.

Dimensions (in mm). When determining them, it is worth focusing on the following typical recommendations. In depth, the visor should be at least 300 more than the platform, that is, completely cover the lower step from above. The same applies to width; to prevent precipitation from entering the area in front of the entrance to the house from the side, the canopy should protrude beyond the perimeter of the jamb on each side by the same 300. If the door is of standard size, then the width of the visor varies between 1250 - 1750, depending on its model and the specifics of the design of the entrance .

Frame type. You can make a visor according to one of four schemes: a cantilever suspension, beam, support, or in the form of a kind of extension mounted on free-standing pillars (independent design).

Canopy shape:

  • single-sided version - the simplest visor over the door, the manufacture of which does not require professionalism;
  • gable schemes - increased strength of the canopy is provided. If the roof of the house has the same appearance, it is advisable to dwell on this modification of the visor;
  • arched structures - the advantages are that they fit well into any architecture and withstand significant loads. Snow on such a canopy does not accumulate, and therefore you can choose more "light" materials;
  • spherical, domed visors - a plus is that they are characterized by good streamlining. With an unfavorable wind rose - one of the best solutions;
  • "pagodas" - they are distinguished by grace and originality. But given the intensity of precipitation in our latitudes and the fact that they will accumulate on a canopy, it is worth considering once again whether such a visor is needed.

Other options are nothing more than modifications of basic structures.

Material selection

The opinions of experts on this point are divided. Some believe that one should focus on the facade of the house, others - on its roof, others - on the design and shape of the porch. But there are obvious things that cannot be ignored.

support structure

  • Metal. Suitable for all types of buildings, provides maximum structural reliability and is suitable for sheathing with any materials. Leaving is not difficult; if there is no anti-corrosion coating or the steel is not of the “stainless steel” category, then regular painting of the elements is sufficient.

  • Wood. As a rule, visors are made from it over the door of a log, timber or frame house, sheathed with wooden clapboard. Needs systematic impregnation and treatment with special / means. If the porch is on the illuminated side of the building, there is no question of durability - twisting, cracking are inevitable.

  • Brick. For massive canopies and solid houses - a good solution, especially if the racks are trimmed with decorative tiles. But the complexity of the construction also increases the final cost of the work. Strength can be increased by laying a metal bar in the supports, which is a plus of this solution.

Roof

It is not difficult to cover the canopy above the front door on your own with the following materials.

  • Polycarbonate. There are many advantages - light weight, a huge palette of shades, a choice of sheet sizes and thicknesses. If light protection matters, then you should focus on the cellular modification of products.
  • Profiled sheet, galvanized. Cheap, attractive, reliable. In addition, working with sheet metal is quite simple - bending, cutting, processing.
  • Slate. A significant disadvantage is a large load. You have to build a solid base. And the vernal appearance of such a visor can hardly be called presentable.
  • Metal tile, soft roof. And they have a drawback - you have to mount a continuous crate. And this, in addition to the additional load, and increased consumption of materials.

Thick glass makes excellent entrance visors. But this option is not for self-production. And traditional coverings from roofing material, roofing felts, films are only suitable for a country house, and even then, not for everyone.

Frame installation

Installation is carried out depending on the selected visor scheme. But the general procedure is the same.

  • Rack fastening. For metal frames, it is better to choose a profile pipe with a side of about 40 mm. It is easy to attach any flooring to it with bolts or self-tapping screws. If the design requires reinforcement, it is easy to mount the crate. But fixing the supporting elements on the wall - only with anchors.

After installing the frame part of the canopy, it is cleaned (if necessary) and treated with a solvent. Before painting, the metal of the visor is covered with a primer layer.

  • Canopy lining. The specificity of fastening sheet materials is that washers are necessarily placed under the fastener heads, even if they are large. The tightening of the hardware is not done to the end to avoid deflections in the profile. When covering the visor above the door with polycarbonate with your own hands, you should use special fasteners, which include thermal washers. Otherwise, thermal deformation of the sheets will lead to their rapid destruction.

There are enough different ideas and schemes on the Internet. Given that there are no strict requirements for visors at the entrance to buildings, any drawing can be taken as a basis and develop your own, individual project. The main thing is that the canopy fits well into the design of the house, matches the purpose and is easy to implement with your own hands, without the help of professionals. Well, who does not rely on himself, will be able to order a canopy in a specialized company.

A canopy or a canopy above the door is not a necessary architectural detail, but it can change the exterior of the facade of any building. In addition to aesthetic functions, the canopy is designed to protect the entrance group from adverse external factors. You can build a simple structure with your own hands, it is important to choose the right material and model of the visor for your home.

The forms and design of lightweight structures that protect the porch of a private house, office building or store from rain are diverse. The simplest canopy can be created from a single sheet of metal profile or polycarbonate, or it can cover a large area above the terrace.

Depending on the size and functions, we can distinguish:

  • pergolas that protect only from the sun;
  • ramadas and patios - long narrow galleries along the wall of the house;
  • small visors;
  • awnings on supports.

The general principle of the construction of all these structures is the same: the visor above the door is fixed on the wall of the house on one side, and its free part rests on the racks. Depending on the dimensions of the canopy, there are 2 options for installing supports:

  1. stand-alone poles;
  2. braces attached to the wall.

The role of the latter is often played by decorative elements made of metal or carved wooden bindings. In such cases, the decorativeness of the supports is combined with their functionality.

According to the design of the supporting frame, there are several different options:

  • shed canopies, consisting of a straight or curved roofing panel, inclined in a single direction;
  • gable, which have 2 planes, closing at the highest point of the structure;
  • arched, based on arched rafters;
  • tented - semicircular or polygonal, in which the rafters are connected in the center;
  • shaped, consisting of several unevenly high slopes.

Varieties of material

The frame and roof, from which the visor above the door will be assembled, the owner chooses according to his taste. The choice is based on the ease of processing in self-manufacturing, the availability of a purchased product at a price or the quality of the product. In any case, when choosing, one must also take into account the compatibility of the appearance of a standard product with the general style of the facade of the house.

Wood

Wood is best for making your own visor. The material is easy to process, durable and light in weight. The disadvantage of wood is susceptibility to decay. This requires additional costs for the protection of parts of the structure and the treatment of wood with antifungal and antiseptic preparations.

Wooden canopies are harmoniously combined with any type of facade cladding. Practical material allows you to design the design in a restrained or decorative style. Most often, visors above the door, made of wood, are installed on log cabins made of timber or rounded logs, complemented by carved supports and balusters of the railing on the porch.

metal tile

A variety of steel sheet materials - metal tile - is a profiled sheet that imitates a tiled pattern. In a private house covered with a metal profile, there are always remnants of this roofing material.

The visor above the front door is best covered with the same metal tile as the building itself. The corrugated steel sheet, covered with a protective polymer composition and painted in bright colors, serves as a good roof for a light canopy over the porch, and the matching of the roof of a large house and the canopy creates a harmonious composition decorating the facade of the house.

Decking

Unlike metal tiles, corrugated sheets are large. Different grades of such a profile have greater or lesser strength. Before buying corrugated board specifically for the manufacture of a canopy, you need to pay attention to the recommended loads. With such material, the canopy over the door can be made from a single sheet, which reduces the time spent on work.

In the manufacture of a frame for a metal roof, the crate is performed with a small step (about 30 cm). This gives the thin sheet the ability to resist pressure and withstand snow loads.

Metal

The support for mounting the visor can be made not only from wood, but also from metal. Most often, a square section pipe is used. Based on it, you can make simple brackets or elegant canopies for doors, assembled from bent parts. A metal support is well suited for a plastic roof: thin details let in a lot of light and the visor will turn out to be airy and light.

Metal products are susceptible to corrosion. When choosing a professional pipe or a rod for assembling a canopy with your own hands, you should immediately take care of the paint.

Polycarbonate

A beautiful transparent roofing material is highly durable and can withstand external factors. It does not rot and is not subject to corrosion, does not require additional processing. The standard area of the sheet allows you to avoid operations for cutting and joining parts. For a small visor, use 1 whole sheet.

Cellular and monolithic polycarbonate bends well. This property is used to make an arched or hipped canopy over the front door. When installed correctly, such a visor is practically not covered with snow: it rolls down a smooth inclined surface. But the angle of inclination must be greater than 20°.

Forged visor

Forged support structures are the most decorative. Their popularity does not dry out, they are always in fashion. A forged product made by a good craftsman is not cheap and is a work of art.

The budget option is welded brackets from a bent bar or professional pipe (cold forging). Despite the simplified metal processing technology, they can be as beautiful as hand-forged ones. If you have special equipment and welding skills, you can make a cold forged visor yourself.

Product Features

To make the canopy over the front door not only beautiful, but also durable, you need to take into account that a small structure is under pressure from a snow cap that accumulates during the winter. Closer to spring, large icicles can also fall from the roof onto the visor. In summer, strong winds and showers act on the roof plane. All these loads are transferred from the roof to the frame support.

The fastening of the visor must be thought out so that it does not fall when exposed to weather factors, and the best option for mounting the supports should be implemented. This can be done like this:

  1. Lightweight and durable construction - with frontal supports. The posts can only be installed at the corners of the rectangle that are not fixed to the wall, but more supports can be made. It depends on the size of the visor and its shape. Frontal supports are installed if the roof area does not exceed 4 m².
  2. The most reliable and massive is the design on 4 columns. In this embodiment, the supports are placed not only under the front side, but also near the wall. Additional supports allow the canopy to withstand heavy loads.
  3. The canopy on the brackets is held by supports in the form of a triangle. Racks under the front extension of the visor rest on the wall 30-50 cm below the horizontal beam. This is the most fragile, but often used design. The area of such a canopy cannot be made too large: the maximum dimensions are about 2 m².

When choosing mounting options on vertical poles, one should not forget about the reliability of the support. Vertical structures must be rigidly fixed. They can be integral with the porch fencing. If it is absent, then it is recommended to dig the columns into the ground to a depth of at least 50 cm. For supports of a large canopy, a columnar foundation is poured, in which vertical posts are fixed.

Pros and cons of using

By installing a canopy over the porch, the owner of the house may find that the design has not only advantages. A canopy that is too large and placed close to the window near the door obscures the hallway. To prevent this from happening, you need to correctly calculate the height of the structure. It should not be lower than 50 cm above the upper border of the window, if it is located next to the door, and should not protrude more than 70 cm from the wall.

If you need a large visor, you should also take into account the fact that these structures obscure part of the local area. It is necessary to proceed with the installation of a large structure after carefully choosing a place and determining the amount of insolation behind it. This is especially important to consider if the shadow falls on the plot of neighbors in the country.

Otherwise, the owner receives only advantages from using a visor or canopy:

  • the ability to leave the house and close the door without getting wet in the rain;
  • avoid falling on an icy porch area;
  • use the covered porch as a low balcony;
  • under large canopies you can relax in the heat and heavy rain;
  • a beautiful canopy will give the facade completeness and chic, if it is made with high quality and is combined in style with the building;
  • light roofing plays an important role in protecting porch materials from precipitation.

How to make a visor over the door?

The visor on the door can be made in the form of a simple shed design:

  1. On the wall of the house, 2 parallel beams are strengthened for support. The distance from the top to the bottom depends on the desire to make the slope more or less.
  2. For a canopy with frontal supports, posts are installed and dug into the ground. Connect the posts with a horizontal bar.
  3. A horizontal strapping (for rigidity) and inclined rafters (for roof support) are placed between the upper part of the pillar and the beams; the distance between the rafters is 50-70 cm. A crate is attached to the rafters.
  4. The roof is fixed with self-tapping screws with press washers.

To install a visor over the door with your own hands with fastening to the struts, you first need to knock down 2 right-angled triangles from wood or weld from metal. These brackets will hold the entire visor, so they need to be strong. Attach the supports to the wall at the right distance from each other, which will determine the dimensions of the structure.

To support the rafters, you need to attach an additional beam to the wall. The device of the truss system is carried out as indicated above.

For a gable or arched structure, 2-3 semicircular or A-shaped roof trusses are made. You need to connect them at the bottom, at the free ends, and at the highest points. For connection, a pipe or bar is used, the length of which is determined by the removal of the visor from the wall. To make supports for the roof frame on poles or brackets, as indicated above. Mount roofing material according to general principles.

When assembling a visor over the front door with your own hands, there are often difficulties with the choice of material and work. A few helpful tips to help you get it right:

  • The most reliable fastening, which is used to install brackets, is an anchor. Metal spacers are suitable for concrete and brick walls, chemical ones for aerated concrete. On a wooden wall, the visor is fixed with nails of at least 15 cm.
  • If soft tiles are used for the roof of the door canopy, the crate must be solid, made of boards 2 cm thick. For a metal profile or polycarbonate, a distance of about 50 cm between its elements is permissible, since these materials do not sag even under the weight of snow. On arched roofs, they are limited to trusses and connecting bars.
  • When installing polycarbonate, the roof must have technological gaps between individual parts (4-5 mm). To protect against the penetration of precipitation, they are covered with a special profile. The edges of cellular polycarbonate must be protected with edge elements. The film from the sheets should be removed only after installation.

When making a forged frame on the brackets yourself, you need to draw a template in the form of a right-angled triangle. Decorative elements are placed so that the load axis on the jib passes through the maximum number of interconnected parts. To support the wall, it is better to make a corner from a professional pipe, on which to weld the elements of the pattern.
