I was inspired to write this essay by the soulful Hawaiian music that I often listen to.

Here are some discs that the Hawaiians themselves recommended to me:
- Gabby Pahinui. The Best Hawaiian Slack Key. 1949, Waikiki records company. (Hawaiian classic)
- Roby Kahakalau. All I want. 2000, Kanai'a Records. (local women's music)
- Israel Kamakawiwoole. Alone in IZ world. 2001, Big Boy Record Company. (Bruddah Iz - Hawaiian everything)
- Keali'I Reichel. Collection One, Kamahiwa. 2005 Punahele Productions Inc. (new classic)
- The Green. Ways & Means. 2011, Easy Star Records. (mixing styles Jamaica + Hawaii = Jawaiian)

Search the Internet for audio and video of these artists and appreciate the plastic vibrancy of the Hawaiian language. And I will briefly talk about it.

Nothing unites all the inhabitants of the Polynesian islands like language. It has ancient Malayo-Polynesian roots and originated long before the settlement of people on the islands of Oceania. The Hawaiian language remained the main language of communication between the government and local residents until the end of the 19th century. Today, Hawaiian is only listed as the "second language of the state". It only plays songs, spells, and local names. Rumor has it that on the distant islands of Kauai and Niihau, Hawaiians continue to speak their native language, but this is hardly heard by tourists. Today, about 27 thousand people understand and can speak the Hawaiian language, and 20 years ago there were 3 times less of them. In Tahiti and New Zealand, 5 times more people speak local Polynesian languages.

Especially a lot of words in the language were used by the Hawaiians to refer to fish species, sea and weather phenomena. This testified to the significance and depth of knowledge of processes in the ocean. Even English borrowed about 200 Hawaiian words. The Hawaiian language has long resisted foreign influence, so some modern words sound very figurative. For example, the radio receiver (Pahu ho'olele leo) literally translates as "a box that makes the voice fly."

The Polynesians did not have a written language, but the interest in the past was so great that they had to memorize the traditions and history of their kind up to the 25th generation. There were several teachers, they mutually checked each other to avoid mistakes. So legends and myths about the adventures of gods and heroes not only survived for thousands of years, but also spread throughout all the islands for thousands of kilometers. The Hawaiian language is figurative and melodious, so the legends quickly became songs. Knowledge for the Hawaiians has a sacred power or ability, which is called mana (gav. Mana) and can only be passed on to those who can benefit society. This power of the spirit awakens the hidden energy that drives everything in the universe. The higher the social status of a Polynesian, the stronger his mana. It used to be thought that the uncontrolled transfer of knowledge, or "writing", dissipates this energy and can do harm when it gets to enemies. Therefore, the only images that have come down to us are direction signs and schematic drawings on fresh lava, or petroglyphs.

With the arrival of American Protestant missionaries in the early 1820s, Hawaiian was given its own written language. The goal of the missionaries was to translate the Bible into Hawaiian and carry out sermons. By the end of the century, 90% of Hawaiians became literate, but with the fall of the kingdom, the language was no longer taught in schools. Since 1978, Hawaiian has again become the official language, and since 1987 it has been taught again in local schools and universities. Almost all local geographical names, street names, plant and animal species are spoken in the local language. In modern museums, exhibits are signed in Hawaiian, and there are Internet sites in this language.

There are only 12 letters in the Hawaiian alphabet. 5 vowels (A, E, I, O, U) and 7 consonants (H, K, L, M, N, P, W). The vowels are pronounced like in Russian, Italian, Spanish and Japanese. All words end with a vowel. The missionaries were a little hard of hearing, they thought the letters sounded the same: P-B, P-F, L-R, K-T, W-V, and they removed the second letters "for simplicity." Here, for example, is why Hawaiian does not have a T, while other Polynesian languages do. Tahiti (Tahiti) in Hawaiian will be - Kahiki (Kahiki), and Taro - "Kalo". Coffee sounds - "Cop".

Only in the middle of the last century did the written language begin to pay attention to pronunciation. Stress in a syllable is now indicated by a bar above the letter (macron - "ā"), while the stressed vowel is pronounced for a long time. Often there is a solid sign "'" - a short and firm pronunciation of a letter with an interval. They are called grammatical, or diacritical, signs (eng. Diacritical mark). For example: Lanai is a large veranda, and Lana'i is the name of the island.

Some double letters (English Diphthongs) are pronounced as one English sound (where were the missionaries looking?). These are: ai (ai), aay (ae), aov (ao), auv (au), hey (ei), eu (eu), u (iu), oh (oi), ou (ou), uy (ui ). Hawaiians often repeat words, use articles, and have several ways of constructing sentences. We only note that the pronouns change depending on the distance and there is no gender - “he, she, it” are denoted by one word “ia” (ia).

A special type of mixed English-Hawaiian-Japanese-Chinese-Filipino Sco-Portuguese can be found in Hawaii. This pidgin language was used by plantation workers to communicate with each other, and now some of their elderly descendants like to chat.
