Electric generator from the washing machine. Do-it-yourself wind generator from a washing machine: instructions for assembling a windmill

It is not easy to acquire such a generator, since the work requires patience and some turning work. For it, they use a conventional asynchronous electric motor, which is available for automatic washing machines. It has a power of 170 ... 180 W; a generator made on the basis of such an electric motor will have 1.5 kW of power.

In addition to the engine itself, stock up on: cold welding; 32 neodymium magnets of different (5, 10, 20 mm) diameters; glue; rectifier; sandpaper. You will need a lathe; scissors; different screwdrivers; pliers.

First, the rotor of the engine is remade in order to subsequently install magnets on it. The cores are removed and, placing them in a lathe, they are cut to a depth of 2 mm. Also arrange grooves of 5 mm depth.

To plant the magnets, a coating is made, which is then wrapped around the core. Apply tin. The diameter of the resulting template, the holes in it must correspond to the core, which is necessary for its tight fit to the surface of the latter.

The magnets are placed with equal gaps between each pair. If this is not done, then in the future they will stick together and the power of the generator will be lost. Placement of magnets is carried out on a strip of tin, which is first glued to the core with superglue. Do it evenly, excluding any slopes of the elements.

After the template with glued magnets is placed on the rotor, all the gaps that exist between the parts are filled with epoxy, cold welding. Next, the rotor surfaces are cleaned with sandpaper until smooth.

At the stator, they find wires that lead to the working winding. They are searched for with a multimeter. They have the same resistance. The rest of the wires are not needed and can be cut.

To check the generator, the working winding is connected to a rectifier, which must be connected to the battery through the controller. The terminals of the multimeter are connected to the latter in voltmeter mode.

Then, using a drill, a screwdriver, spin the generator rotor up to 800 ... 1000 rpm. The multimeter should show an output voltage of 200 ... 300 V. If it is small, then when placing the magnets, most likely, an inaccuracy was made - they are laid out on a template with different intervals between pairs.

Having made a generator and installed it on a chainsaw, we got a small power plant. The electricity that it gives out is enough to light up two small rooms, to give work to a TV, a computer. Instead of a chainsaw to rotate the rotor, you can arrange a windmill.

Problems with electrical energy, which usually arise unexpectedly, force many consumers to think about the device of an autonomous power supply. Moreover, exorbitant bills for the use of the industrial network are also pushing for this. Installing an autonomous power source in the house is considered a profitable business. This device is able to come to the rescue when the industrial power supply is turned off.

Its power indicator is relatively small, but this is quite enough to act as a backup power source. Purchasing a generator on purpose is an expensive pleasure, but making it yourself is quite realistic. Today we will consider how to make a generator from a washing machine engine with your own hands.

Preparatory work

It seems to many that making a homemade electric generator from is a simple matter. Drop all illusions, because you will not be able to quickly cope with such a task. First of all, three main problematic issues should be dealt with:

  • how to remove part of the core of the electric motor from the washing machine, arrange special grooves on it designed for magnets;
  • where to get neodymium magnets in the generator rotor;
  • what material to use to make a template to secure the magnets.
  1. The first question is solved as follows: a core is removed from the asynchronous motor of a spent washing machine, which is cut two millimeters deep using a lathe. After such refinement, we put the engine aside - we will have to look for neodymium magnets, and it is best to use the help of the Internet. Having found the store, you should apply for the purchase and wait until the right product is delivered, since the device cannot be made without magnets.
  2. On the machine, we prepare grooves in the motor core for magnets, their depth must be at least five millimeters. You will need good lathe skills, or seek help from a specialist.
  3. Having carried out preparatory work on the core, we prepare mounting templates for magnets. You can use a piece of tin, other materials with similar properties will do. The strip is cut to the appropriate length and width so that it can fit exactly on the core.
  4. The mounting strip will also have to be prepared, for which markings are arranged along its entire length in order to be able to place the magnets in two rows so that the distance between these magnets will be the same.
  5. As additional materials for the conversion into a generator device, we need superglue, epoxy or cold welding, sandpaper.

Having prepared everything you need, we can begin to work. We immediately warn you that it will take a lot of patience to make the desired element from the washing machine engine. The magnets will constantly jump off and stick to each other, you will smear everything that is possible with glue, so we recommend that you use caution and safety requirements when working with potentially harmful chemical compounds.

The algorithm of actions is as follows:

  • we make a magnetic rotor of an electric motor in order to convert it into a generator. We glue tin templates across the engine for placing magnets;
  • according to the previously applied markings with the help of superglue, we fasten two rows of magnets;
  • all the free space remaining between the magnets is carefully filled with cold welding, previously kneaded by hands to a plasticine consistency;
  • grind the device with sandpaper. To make it more convenient to work, it is recommended to fix the case in a drilling machine.

The process of manufacturing a generator from an engine is completed, it remains to test it in action. To perform the check you will need:

  • rectifier;
  • multimeter;
  • charging controller;
  • motorcycle battery;
  • homemade electric generator.

Think about how the rotation will be carried out. You won’t be able to do this with your fingers, because you won’t be able to create the required number of revolutions. We recommend using an electric drill or screwdriver.

We determine a pair of working wires on the prepared device, cut off the rest. We connect the wires through the rectifier to the charge controller, and then to the battery. We fix the fasteners of the multimeter on the battery terminals - the generator is ready for testing.

We charge the generator pulley into the cartridge of the power tool, with the help of which the promotion will be performed, and give revolutions in the range of 800 - 1000 rotations. As a result, with moderate sticking of the magnets, 270 volts should be obtained, which will turn out to be quite an acceptable indicator.

What is the best way to use such a device? If you install a generator on a chainsaw, you get a small power plant, the energy of which will be enough to light two small rooms, run a computer, and even watch TV.

It is possible to connect the generator to a hydro turbine installed in a domestic waterfall or fast-flowing stream.

Some install wind turbines and generate electrical energy from the mechanical energy received. For this, generators are suitable not only from an asynchronous, but also a collector motor. An alternative power source is quite safe, able to start at a wind speed of two to three meters per second. But with ten-meter gusts of wind, such a generator will reach its maximum efficiency, although four meters will be enough for home consumption, allowing it to generate 0.15 - 0.20 kW, which will be quite enough to light the room and watch TV.

At 1 - 5 kW, feel free to turn on the computer, refrigerator and even the washing machine. But 20 kW will already be enough to supply heat to the heating system.

It is best if the windmill you install turns out to be three-bladed - as it is the most efficient in operation. Use a steel bar as its basis, on which you attach the generator, blades and rotor. Consider protection for the generator so that it does not suffer from adverse weather conditions. For the moving part of the wind turbine, provide a hinged mount. We lay a wire from the generator along the length of the mast, bring it to the shield, connect the controller, inverter and battery device. As you can see, the connection diagram is simple.

Conclusion

With patience, you can independently make an electric power generator from the electric motor of an old washing machine, which will come to your aid in difficult times. Besides, with such a home-made installation, you can start saving money on utility bills.

A generator is an electrical device that converts thermal or mechanical energy into electric current, that is, it performs the usual work of an electric motor in the reverse order. The purpose of creating a generator from an asynchronous motor of a washing machine (any other motor from a household appliance of suitable power) can be to create:

  • inverter type welding machine;
  • uninterruptible power supply of a private house (apartment);
  • charger and so on.

But in order to better understand how to make a generator out of a washing machine engine, let's see what an asynchronous motor from an unnecessary washing machine is.

Induction motor and principles of its operation

An electric motor (asynchronous) is a device that transforms the electricity it receives into mechanical (thermal), thus bringing the device into which it is mounted into action. The transformation of one type of energy into another occurs due to the electromagnetic induction that occurs between the windings of the rotor and stator of the motor (school physics course).

Buying a ready-made asynchronous generator today will not be difficult. But the cost of this factory-made device will be quite expensive. And the purpose of creating such a device is not to waste money, but, on the contrary, to save them by using an asynchronous type electric motor, free time, personal knowledge and experience. Let's talk right away. If you do not have (do not remember) basic, initial knowledge in electrical engineering, it is better to immediately leave alone the idea of \u200b\u200bcreating a home-made generator from a single-phase washing machine motor with your own hands.

Step-by-step instruction

Necessary devices and parts for operation:

  • Asynchronous single-phase motor from an automatic washing machine. An electric motor with a power of 170-180 watts is quite suitable. The manufacturer and time of production of the engine does not matter. The main thing is that it is in working condition;
  • Neodymium magnets in the amount of 32 pieces. With dimensions: 20-10-5 millimeters. A photo. You can buy magnets in a specialized electrical store or order online;
  • Device charging controller;

  • Rectifier of suitable power. You can purchase it ready-made, use it from another device, or assemble it yourself using D242 diodes;
  • Glue (epoxy resin, Super Moment);
  • Wax paper;
  • Scissors;
  • Sandpaper;
  • Home lathe;
  • Wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers and other little things.

Do-it-yourself work order:

  1. We remake the rotor (native) of the washing machine engine. This operation consists in removing a core layer two millimeters thick on a lathe on the ledges of the side cheeks.
  2. Then, using the same machine, we cut recesses of five millimeters according to the number of magnets that will be mounted in them.
  3. We measure the circumference of a self-made rotor and, based on the measurements obtained, we make a template from a steel (tin) strip.
  4. Using the template, we divide the rotor into equal parts.
  5. Based on the fact that each of the four poles of the rotor will need 8 magnets, we divide them into parts.
  6. We glue Neodymium magnets into pre-made recesses, given that the magnets are very strong, when gluing, sufficient physical effort should be applied to hold them in the desired position. The process of installing all 32 magnets will require quite a lot of time and attention.
  7. After fixing them, we check the strength and correct location of the magnets.
  8. We fill the free space between the magnets with epoxy resin. For this:
  • in several layers we wrap the rotor with waxed paper and fix it in any convenient way (glue, adhesive tape);

  • the end sides are also sealed, you can use ordinary plasticine;
  • cut a small hole in the paper;
  • pour epoxy resin into the resulting cavity with magnets until it is completely filled;
  • leave the fixative to dry;
  • after the resin has hardened, remove the paper and plasticine.
  1. We process the surface of the rotor with sandpaper until the desired result (smoothness) is obtained.
  2. If necessary, we replace the screws tightening the housing and the motor bearings with new ones.
  3. Of the 4 wires of the electric motor, we select 2 going to the working winding. The remaining (starting) wires are removed.
  4. We connect the controller, rectifier and single-phase asynchronous motor from the washing machine into one circuit and perform working testing of the self-assembled asynchronous power generator.

Do-it-yourself asynchronous generator manufacturing options

In our article, we gave an example of converting a washing machine engine into a generator using neodymium magnets. But, besides this, you can make the following types of generators with your own hands:

  • Self-feeding electric generator;
  • Wind power generator;
  • 3-phase gas generator;
  • Phase generators on any engines from household appliances.

Safety precautions when using electric generators

Given that any electrical equipment poses a potential threat to its user, it must be properly insulated.

Ground the generator without fail.

Do not neglect the preventive inspection of the equipment.

Equip the device with separate on and off buttons, as well as measuring instruments that control the correct operation of the generator.

Do-it-yourself homemade generator from a washing machine engine: video instruction.

In the household, it is useful to have a power source that will autonomously ensure the operation of appliances in the event of power outages in the network. A do-it-yourself alternator from a washing machine engine for charging a battery will solve this problem.

How to make it from the motor of an outdated washing machine, we will tell you step by step. We note right away: this requires, in addition to the necessary materials and tools, technical knowledge and skills, patience and time. But the savings on the purchase of an industrial power generator and the resulting amenities will justify the effort.

How to convert an engine into a generator

The main difficulty lies in the alteration of the rotor from a direct drive induction motor. Consider this using the example of the Vyatka washing machine with a capacity of 180 watts.

You will need:

  • pliers;
  • screwdriwer set;
  • locksmith scissors;
  • cold welding;
  • lathe;
  • rectifier;
  • neodymium magnets - 32 pieces, sizes 5, 10 and 20 mm (buy through the online store);
  • tin;
  • glue;
  • sandpaper;
  • Scotch;
  • epoxy resin;
  • protective glasses.

Remove the rotor from the removed and disassembled electric motor of the washing machine. On a lathe, cut the core to a depth of 2 mm and cut grooves 5 mm deep for the magnets according to their dimensions.

For a homemade template, cut a strip of tin according to the circumference according to the size of the entire part. Using the template, mark out the rotor to evenly place the magnets. 8 pieces will go to one pole (and there will be 4 in total). Carefully and carefully with superglue or cold welding, secure in place.

Wrap everything with several layers of paper, securing it with tape. Cut a hole to fill with epoxy. After hardening, remove the shell. Sand the surface on the machine with sandpaper.

Install the part in the motor stator.

The peculiarity of the generator is that it rotates at a higher speed than the engine. To solve this problem, use a tachometer to determine the number of revolutions of your collector engine. Add 10 percent to the result. To achieve the calculated indicator, select capacitors of the appropriate capacity. They must be single phase. Keep in mind that a squirrel-cage device gives a higher voltage. To get 220 volts at the output, use a step-down transformer.

Testing

Produced by a generator made of a collector motor, the current is supplied to the battery. It is connected to the charge controller and the module. By using a DC voltage inverter from the network, it converts it to AC to power household appliances. To find out if your product gives the necessary 220 volts and 50 hertz, you need to test.

You need:

  1. battery;
  2. rectifier;
  3. controller;
  4. tester.

After ringing the outputs of the motor winding with an ampervoltmeter, find two active ones after the alteration. Cut off the old ones.

Connect the found contacts through the rectifier to the controller. And the last one is with the battery terminals.

Connect the drill to the rotor with an adapter and turn it on for 1000 revolutions. Measure the voltage at the battery input with a tester. If everything is done and assembled correctly, it will be the desired one - 220 volts.

Important! Check winding sticking. If it is large, the generator power will be low.

Application possibilities

So, I managed to create my own generator. Savings at the same time, according to the most conservative estimates, will amount to more than 4,000 rubles. Indeed, in the distribution network it costs from 6,000, and you will spend only on the purchase of magnets (1,200–1,400 rubles). The scope of use of the unit, which gives up to 2 kilowatts of power, depends on your imagination and desire. You can illuminate the country house by connecting to the motor of a motorcycle or chainsaw.

A wind generator is a great alternative to electric power sources. It is used for private houses remote from power lines and as an additional power source. In this article we will tell you how to make a mini-windmill from improvised means (washing machine, scrap metal, broken household appliances) with your own hands.

A wind generator is a complex of mechanical devices related to an alternative source of electricity that converts the kinetic energy of the wind into mechanical energy using blades, and then into electricity.

Wind generator - an alternative source of energy for a private house

Modern models have three blades, this provides a greater efficiency of the installation. The minimum wind speed at which the windmill starts is 2-3 m / s. Also, the technical specifications always indicate the nominal speed - the wind indicator at which the installation gives the maximum efficiency indicator, usually 9-10 m / s. At wind speeds closer to 25 m/s, the blades take on a perpendicular position relative to the wind, due to which energy production drops significantly.

In order to provide a private house with electricity, with a wind speed of 4 m / s, it is enough:

  • 0.15-0.2 kW for basic needs: room lighting, TV;
  • 1-5 kW to ensure the operation of basic electrical appliances (refrigerator, washing machine, computer, iron, etc.) and lighting;
  • 20 kW will provide energy for the whole house, including heating.

Because the wind can stop at any time, the windmill is not connected directly to electrical appliances, but to batteries with a charge controller. Because batteries produce alternating current, and for household appliances you need a constant voltage of 220V, they install an inverter, to which all electrical appliances are connected. The disadvantages of wind turbines include the noise and vibration produced from them, especially for powerful installations, more than 100 kW.

Types of wind turbine blades

The main parts of the wind generator

To make a homemade windmill, you need to know what main parts it consists of and what they can be replaced with:

  • Rotor - a rotating part of the installation, powered by wind power. It can be bought at a store or removed from a non-working unit (engine or drill generator).
  • Blades. They are usually made of wood, light metal (aluminum), or plastic. They can be sail type (like a windmill) and winged.

Advice! Vane profile blades are more efficient.

  • A generator is a device that converts wind power into electrical energy. You can make it yourself from magnetic coils or remake a ready-made washing machine or car generator.
  • The tail is an element that helps to orient the windmill in relation to the wind. It is made of wood, light metal, plexiglass or plastic.

Scheme: wind generator device
  • Horizontal yard to support the generator, wind turbine and tail.
  • A mast on which a yard with a generator is movably attached. It reaches a length of 5 m to 20 m and is made of durable wood or a plastic/iron tube hollow inside with a box for the outlet of the electrical wire. It is fixed with steel cables for additional reliability.

Advice! The higher the matcha of the windmill, the more energy it will generate.

  • Wire connecting the generator and the shield. And the switchboard itself consists of:
  1. battery. It is best to use special devices for alternative energy systems;
  2. battery charge controller;
  3. inverter.

How to make a windmill generator from a washing machine

As a generator for a windmill, it is best to use an asynchronous motor, which is used in old-style washing machines.

Attention! The main problem with homemade generators is magnet sticking. To avoid this, they are installed at a slight slope.

How to install a wind generator

  • We install a generator, blades, rotor and tail on the carrier rail. At the same time, it is necessary
    close the generator and the windmill rotor with a special casing for weather protection.

Advice! To protect against cold, the unit can be coated with a silicone-based lubricant.

  • The power plant is attached to the rail with a movable hinge mechanism.
  • The mast is attached to a concrete base with 4 bolts.
  • A wire is run along the mast from the generator to the switchboard.

The installation of the wind generator is carried out in calm weather
  • After that, the voltage controller, battery and inverter are connected.
  • The installation is connected to test devices, during normal operation it is reconnected to the network.

Attention! Before connecting complex household appliances to the network, check the operation of elementary ones, for example, charging for your phone.

A wind generator is an environmentally friendly option for generating electricity. Small wind turbines are perfect for summer cottages or as an additional power source in private homes in the absence of light. In order to make it yourself, you need to have basic knowledge in electrical and electronics. It is advisable to watch the video instruction for more information.
