Preliminary stage of work
First you need to decide on the future appearance of the cover, and only then proceed to build a pattern. Ideas can be gleaned from publications dedicated to home decor. And do not be afraid of the apparent complexity of the design. Most likely, the cover pattern itself will be a combination of several rectangular elements. On fig. 1 shows the ideas of similar products that decorated the same piece of furniture.
Please note that the first 4 models were not sewn. They are just a draped piece of fabric. You can also follow this path and first form the future cover on your sofa, and then proceed to cutting. In this case, you may not need a pattern.

When choosing a fabric for the cover, give preference to thin, easily draped materials: viscose, rayon or satin. Such covers are not designed for a long service life, but they are cheap. Therefore, you can change the decor of the room as you wish. If you want to sew a tight, tight-fitting cover, then you should pay attention to dense fabrics for furniture. It can be gabardine, velor or tapestry. Such products will last much longer.
For sewing such a product, they usually buy about 5-5.5 m of fabric of standard width (from 1.4-1.5 m). But only a ready-made cover pattern will give you a more accurate consumption of material. Therefore, you should first build a pattern, and only then go to the store. In addition to fabric, you will need the following:
- sewing machine;
- tailor's scissors;
- a set of special feet for a sewing machine;
- running thread and needle;
- pins.
Do not forget about the tools for taking measurements and building a pattern. Stock up on a large ruler, a tailor's centimeter and a square. In addition, you will need paper for the pattern. It is wiser to take graph paper, but it can be replaced with wrapping paper. Use painter's tape to stick individual sheets together. Then you will receive a sheet of the size you need.

Taking measurements from the sofa

The easiest way is to open the seams of the old sofa cover and just copy them. But this is not always possible. In this case, the pattern is built again. In this case, you need to accurately take all the necessary measurements.
To calculate the right amount of material that is required for sewing the cover, measure the furniture by taking its dimensions in turn at the longest and widest point of one or another element. To all the measurements obtained, add 7-10 cm for seam and hem allowances and 15-20 cm for the edges that will be folded inward. To make the cover easy to put on and take off, in the middle of the back of the back, a flap-shaped fastener with buttons can be provided, with ties on the outer sides of the armrest or on the back edges. It is wiser to take into account all allowances immediately when constructing a pattern for covers. This will help to stitch the overall thing correctly.
To measure your sofa, take the following measurements:
- Dimensions of the outer side of the armrest.
- Sofa back dimensions
- Dimensions of the front side of the sofa seat.
When taking measurements, make sure that the measuring tape is not stretched. Stretch it from point to point with a slight slack in the middle. Otherwise, the cover may turn out to be too narrow and cramped. It is more reasonable to add 1 cm to all the measurements obtained. This will give the necessary space.

Rookie Mistakes
Some novice craftswomen have problems not so much with building a sofa pattern, but with taking the necessary measurements. The cover pattern is a rather complex, but at the same time geometrically correct design. And to build it, you need to accurately imagine where which part is located. How to accurately take the necessary measurements is shown in Fig. 2.

Measurement of the outer side of the armrest. It starts from the seam connecting the inner part with the outer one. Please note that the inner part (indicated as a-b in the figure) goes around the outer part of the armrest. The front part (o-r) is an insert that connects the outer and inner parts. On straight armrests, this insert also runs along the upper part of the element, where the inner and outer parts adjoin it on both sides.
Back length (s-s) is measured at the widest point of the back. The length of the back is equal to the distance from the top seam to the floor. Next, you need to decide on the seat of the sofa. Its front side is sometimes made in the form of a frill. Its height is measured from the bottom of the sofa to the top seam (u-l). This element is sewn to the bottom of the seat and hangs down to the floor. Its width is equal to the distance from one edge of the seat to the other (v-w). And there are no duplicate parts. But sometimes such a strip can go to the side parts (w-x). In some models, it can continue on the back side. At the same time, it can be laid in simple or bow folds.
Add 10 cm for back closure and 15 cm for side closure. The zipper should be strong enough and match the density of the material you choose. When constructing a pattern, it is necessary to take into account the margin that will be needed to plant the fabric in place. When calculating the material consumption, you need to take into account the fabric that will be needed to cut the seat cushion covers.

Making patterns for covers
An example of a finished pattern is shown in fig. 3.
Naturally, you can specify your own measurements and adjust this pattern to fit your needs. Then you just have to cut the fabric. But if such a drawing is too complicated for you, then there is 1 more way. Build a pattern of only the back part of the back, and cut all other elements “on the live”, focusing on this blank.
It should be noted that the consumption of fabric with this method is very large, since all the details are cut out with huge allowances (at least 15 cm on each side).
Therefore, it is wiser to first make a pattern for a cover from cheap fabric, such as chintz, and then use it as a pattern.
But this method has one indisputable plus - the cover pattern will “sit down” on your sofa like a glove.
Be sure to sign all the details on the wrong side, otherwise you will mix them up. Mark the position of seams, darts, gathers and folds. Be sure to indicate the direction of the shared thread and the middle of the part. These lines will help you connect different elements. With a dotted line, mark the position of the seams and the points of their intersection.
Fold the workpiece in half lengthwise and mark the direction of the longitudinal thread. Then unfold it again and pin it to the back of the chair. Now throw the fabric over the front of the back and straighten it so that there are no wrinkles. Connect the edges of the front and back and pin them together. Cut out the necessary element from the material (without removing it from the sofa).
The sofa cover is a versatile accessory that can perform many important functions. Before you start cutting and sewing, you should think about what kind of dream bedspread should be, because the harmony of the entire interior depends on this detail. Currently the most popular are the following models:
- One-piece cover without clamps. As a rule, such models completely repeat the furniture silhouette with a small margin, so they are quite easy to take off and put on. How to sew a cover on a simple sofa: a master class with video
If your sofa is a simple shape, sewing a slipcover on it will be easy and the process will not take much time.
You will need:
Cover fabric;
Tailor's pins;
Threads and a needle for basting;
Scissors;
Sewing machine and thread.
Work sequence:
1. Throw the fabric over the sofa right side down, smooth it out and pin it together with pins in the places of future seams, as shown in the photo. Cuts must be made at the corners.
2. Baste without removing the fabric from the sofa, and cut off the excess fabric, leaving allowances for the seams. It is good to unscrew the cover and try it on the sofa again.
3. Sew the seams on the machine and finish the edges.

How to sew a cover on a sofa of complex shape: a step-by-step master class
The essence of sewing a cover for a sofa of complex shape is the same as in the case of a simple sofa. However, the cover will have more details and you will have to spend some time carefully pinning the fabric onto the sofa, and then stitching the details.
You will need:
Cover fabric;
Tailor's pins;
Scissors;
Sewing machine and thread;
Cord for edging.
Work sequence:
1. If the sofa has cushions, remove them. Throw the fabric over the sofa face down. Smooth out the fabric on the sofa, determining where the end or beginning of this or that detail will be. Unnecessary pieces of fabric can be cut out immediately, without forgetting about seam allowances. Leave them wider - then you can cut off the excess.
2. Where necessary, make notches for a better fit. Fix the darts with pins.
3. You can sew up the darts at once, just by chipping each one, and then forming the next/next seam.
4. Details for the armrests are formed according to the same principle. Leave the finished parts of the cover on the sofa, put the fabric inside out on the armrest. Straighten the fabric, chop it with the finished part of the cover, cut off the excess.
5. This is how the parts of the cover for the convex armrests are formed.
6. Chip the armrest part with the main part of the cover, complete the seams.
7. Prepare the finishing edge. To do this, cut out the stripes and sew them obliquely, as a slanting inlay is sewn.
8. Fold the piping part in half lengthwise, put the cord inside and lay the line along the entire length, as shown in the photo.
9. Having pinned the fabric to the front of the armrest, cut out the corresponding part of the cover.
10. Insert a piping between the details of the cover and pin it with pins.
11. Sew seams with piping.
12. If your sofa has symmetrical armrests, follow the same procedure for the cover for the second armrest. If the sofa is a compound, corner sofa, as in this case, form the second side of the cover as shown below.
16. To cut out the details of the "skirt", measure the distance from the sewn edging to the floor level. This length of the "skirt" will be the same for all parts. The details of the “skirt” will need 12: 4, equal in width to half the long side of the sofa cover, 2, equal in width to the side of the sofa cover, and 6 identical parts of small width - they will be sewn from below at the junction of the “skirt” parts. Cut out 12 pieces, add seam allowances and processing. Work all the details on all sides except the top.
17. Put the cover on the sofa with the seams inward and pin the details of the "skirt" around the perimeter, as shown in the photo. Then stitch all the details with one seam.

A rough calculation looks like this: two sofa lengths + two sofa widths. As a result, if the sofa is 160 cm wide and 200 cm long, then 7.2 meters of fabric (width 150 cm) will be required. But, this is just a guideline, so that you can calculate in advance how much the fabric will cost approximately, and what kind of fabric you need to buy, for 2000 rubles per meter or still for 200 rubles.
An accurate calculation of tissue consumption without experience is quite difficult to do. It is necessary to carefully measure all sections and details, draw them in a reduced form on paper, then make a layout, taking into account the direction of the pattern or pattern of the fabric, the shared line. 2. Pattern of covers for furniture
If the sofa is of a standard rectangular shape or even angular, but with walls and backs of the usual straight shape, then the pattern is easier to make. We can only give a few tips to avoid simple mistakes. Well, for example, it is better to make a pattern with large allowances, and after trying on, adjust these allowances by cutting them with scissors.
For a pattern, you can use ordinary newspapers or carbon paper, if you “paste over” parts of the sofa details with them, outlining their shape with a pencil and cutting them out with scissors. Then collect all these details with adhesive tape, and "boldly" adjust the pattern with scissors right "in place". You can connect the cuts with adhesive tape, the missing sections can be increased by gluing pieces of paper with adhesive tape.
The more precisely (densely) you will build a pattern, the more likely it is to make mistakes when sewing a furniture cover. The sofa only in appearance has a rectangular shape. In fact, its forms are very complex; it is impossible to guess their configuration by exact calculation. Even at the factory, furniture upholstery is not sewn according to a pre-made pattern, but is fitted, as if pasting a sofa with a film, fixing the stretched edges with clips (stapler clips). Therefore, do not try to exactly repeat the shapes of your sofa with the help of the "most accurate" pattern. It is better to make a cover for the sofa in a more free form, as in the top photo, the main purpose of which will be to change its appearance, and not to “pull” fabric upholstery to it.
Use all sorts of decorative bows, ribbons and belts. They are good at diverting attention from failed places and perfectly refresh the overall design of the room, and in addition, they will additionally decorate the furniture cover you have sewn.
Numerous decorative pillows are also able to hide many inaccuracies of a sewn cover, and besides, they can be used for their intended purpose. Sewing them is quite simple, approximately the same as sewing a pillowcase, and you can “fill” with anything, up to the scraps of fabric left over from cutting the sofa covers.
So that your beloved cats do not stick into the leather upholstery of the sofa even through the covers, it is advisable to put thin foam rubber (1-1.5 cm) inside the covers, which you can buy at any decent household goods store.
When sewing, use strong and reinforced threads, but not too thick, otherwise the sewing machine will be "naughty".
Since the cover will experience a lot of stress on the seams, especially if the pattern turned out to be very tight, some seams can be stitched twice. Just do not make too small a stitch on the sewing machine, the seams will not become stronger from this, but you can destroy the fibers of the tapestry fabric.
An old grandmother's hand-operated Podolsk machine is the best sewing machine for sewing covers. In extreme cases, on such a machine you can sew furniture fabric folded only in half, well, in three layers at most, and then at the slowest speed.

In order to prevent the fabric of the cover from “wrinkling” when you sit on it, prepare wooden rods equal to 5/8 of the length/width of the sofa, and deepen them between the seat and backs. If the sides of the sofa are curved, use a PVC plumbing pipe of the appropriate length for the same purpose, bending it into the desired shape.
