What to glue between the wallpaper and the ceiling. How to wallpaper the ceiling: surface preparation and pasting process

Decorative tile ceiling decoration is a new and one of the most practical inventions. It allows you to make the surface of the ceiling fairly even, as well as save money due to the low cost of the material used - polystyrene. Sticking ceiling tiles, like any other work, involves a preliminary study of the technology of the process.

Required Tools

The only necessary step in preparing for gluing tiles is the selection of tools that will be needed to complete the work. You need to pick up a set of tools in order not to waste time on this already when directly gluing ceilings with tiles. For speed and quality, the following tools will be needed:

  • a stepladder that can be placed anywhere in the room, or a table;
  • construction knife, with which the tiles are cut;
  • threads and a pencil necessary for marking;
  • tape measure or ruler;
  • glue or "liquid nails";
  • putty knife;
  • soft cloth or sponge to remove excess glue.

So, you have prepared the necessary tools. Before gluing ceilings with tiles, you need to get rid of old wallpaper and putty, if any. It happens when some of the remnants of the wallpaper cannot be peeled off, then they can be left. But if the tile is thin, then such areas after the repair is completed will stand out against the general background. To prevent this, cover the ceiling with a layer of putty. This will make its shade uniform and eliminate existing cracks. The last step in preparing for tiling the ceiling is to coat it with a primer, which will remove excess dust and strengthen the pre-applied putty.

Which glue to choose

One of the important stages is the choice of glue, since it is with the help of it that the tile adheres to the surface of the ceiling. The type of glue will determine how long the ceiling surface will remain smooth and beautiful. Of the entire range of products for pasting the ceiling with tiles, water-based glue is recognized as the most environmentally friendly. It is used when working with both foam plastic and wood and drywall.

But there is another good option - "liquid nails", a universal or special adhesive for pasting the ceiling with ceiling tiles. The manufacturer, as a rule, indicates on the product the adhesive necessary for gluing ceiling tiles.

Where to start pasting

How to tile a ceiling? You can choose one of the following methods:

  1. From the corner - an option used for elongated narrow rooms. Pasting the ceiling with tiles starts from the corner, which is better viewed from the side of the entrance to the room.
  2. From the center - the ceiling at the same time looks the most neat. Where to begin? We find the geometric center of the ceiling, then carry out the markup. The most difficult thing will be to glue the tiles on the ceiling near the chandelier, therefore, it is better to start from it. Be aware that with this option of pasting the ceiling with tiles, a narrow strip may remain at the edge, while not necessarily parallel to the wall.
  3. Diagonally - a method suitable for large rooms and requires correct and accurate marking. Two threads are pulled from opposite corners of the room. The place where they intersect is the center of the ceiling.
  4. Rhombus is a rather complicated way to perform. To begin with, we measure the squares from the center of the ceiling and draw diagonals in each of them, with which the sides of the glued tile will coincide. If you choose this method, please note that the material consumption will be more significant than in other cases.
  5. For whitewashing - according to experts, the method is undesirable to use, since the combination of glue and whitewashing will not allow the tile to hold on for a long time. For this reason, whitewash is better to wash off.

We start sticking

After cleaning the ceiling, proceed to the application of glue. We cover the tile with a thin layer of glue, especially paying attention to the center and corners, and glue it in the previously found center of the ceiling. Applying glue in a dotted line will save it and reduce excess protruding on the front side. In order for the glue to grab, you need to leave it for a couple of minutes to weather. As for the chandelier, you need to make a hole in the tile for it.

Then, having de-energized the room, remove the chandelier, pass the wires through the hole made and hang the lighting fixture in place. Next, glue the tiles along the markings parallel to the walls and close to each other.

Excess glue must be removed immediately with a soft cloth. Sometimes pasting the ceiling with tiles is not complete without the appearance of cracks between them. But gaps can be easily dealt with with acrylic sealant.

Pasting the ceiling with tiles ends with the installation of skirting boards. It is better to start from the side that is most visible from the front door. The corner end of the skirting board must be cut at an angle of 45°.

Carefully apply glue to both the ceiling and the baseboard, and also do not forget about the junction of the two parts. The gaps between the wall and the eaves can also be sealed with sealant. In order for the skirting boards to hold until the glue sets, secure them with pins.

Expanded polystyrene has a lot of advantages. One more plus can be added to the economy and ease of installation: when flooded by neighbors from above, the ceiling from such a tile will not be damaged. In addition, pasting the ceiling with tiles expands the space even with low ceilings in the room. Of course, in order for a tiled ceiling to please the eye for as long as possible, it is necessary to properly install it.

Among the many ways to decorate the premises, there are also wallpapers of various structures, types and colors. But it's one thing to stick stripes on a vertical surface, and quite another - on a horizontal one. In this article we will try to figure out how to wallpaper the ceiling, that is, we will master the installation technique.

Wallpapering process

In order to paste wallpaper on any surface, it must first of all be prepared for work. Sometimes the preparation takes more time and effort than the wallpaper itself, but otherwise there is no point in pasting, because without a good foundation, high-quality cladding will not work (see).

Preparation for pasting wallpaper on the ceiling

  • In order to glue the wallpaper to the surface of the ceiling - it must be leveled. This can be done in several ways: using various plaster and putty mixtures and using drywall. The second option is faster and does not involve a lot of garbage, because all work is carried out "dry".
  • If the surface of the ceiling is sufficiently even, or, in any case, it suits you, then you need to make sure that the plaster is strong, otherwise how can you wallpaper the ceiling if it collapses ?! Perhaps the plaster itself will not collapse, but there is such a thing as cohesion. This is when, during the intermolecular adhesion of foreign bodies, one structure tears off another. So wallpaper glue can tear off a layer of paint, lime or plaster from the ceiling and, of course, the wallpaper will not stick.
  • In order to prevent cohesion from the ceiling, you need to remove the old paint or whitewash, and in other cases, the top layer of plaster. The resulting irregularities are sealed with a solution of starting putty to create a single, even plane.

  • Whether your ceiling will be flat initially or you will level it yourself - in any case, it must be primed before pasting the wallpaper. This promotes adhesion (weak intermolecular adhesion) and the wallpaper will not fall off the ceiling.
  • As a rule, the ceiling is primed with a paint roller in several directions so that the layer is dense. You can apply a primer with a maklavitsa, but in this case the liquid will flow down the brush, so it is still better to do this work with a roller. Before sticking wallpaper on the ceiling, the primer must dry completely.

Gluing wallpaper

  • So, your ceiling is even and a primer has been applied to it, which has dried, which means you can start sticking wallpaper. First of all, you need to cut them into strips of the desired length in sufficient quantities so that they do not take up the floor later.

  • If there is a pattern on the wallpaper that needs to be adjusted when joining, then the strips must be cut a few centimeters (depending on the pattern) longer than the required value, so that after fitting these excesses are removed.

  • Note that you need to cut the wallpaper to the entire ceiling, because you can only do this on the floor, which must be clean. In the process of pasting, you will definitely get the floor dirty and in order to roll out a roll on it, you need to wash it and let it dry. You understand that this is an irrational waste of your own labor and time.

  • In order for wallpapering the ceiling to be even, you need to draw an orientation line for the first sheet. To do this, marks are placed on both sides, and a masking cord (chocline) is pulled between them, with which the control line is beaten off. Such a mark is needed only for the first strip - the next ones will be oriented along the edge of the previous one.
  • It is especially important to make a reference line if you are going to glue the wallpaper diagonally or if there is an uneven wall nearby. Focusing on the line, you will lay the first sheet evenly, despite any visual interference.

  • Now you need to dilute the glue in a bucket. The proportions of water and powder are indicated by the manufacturer on the package, but if you doubt the reliability of the glue, you can add ordinary PVA to the finished solution at the rate of 0.5 l of PVA per 10 l of diluted wallpaper glue (see).
  • If you stick vinyl or acrylic wallpaper on the ceiling, then the material itself does not need to be smeared with glue - the solution is applied only to the ceiling. Diluted glue is collected in a paint bath and applied to the ceiling with a roller, separately, under each strip, stepping over the edge of 5-10 cm for insurance. Be careful that the applied layer is uniform, and without bald patches.

  • The cut off strip of wallpaper is applied to the ceiling along the line beaten off on it and smoothed out with a wallpaper spatula. Also, a woolen or foam rubber paint roller is used to smooth the wallpaper. When gluing the next sheet, glue may come out at the junction of the strips - it is removed with a clean rag, blotting the surface.
  • In general, the place of joining is a very important detail in the installation of wallpaper, because quite often it is the edges of the strips that are peeled off. To prevent this from happening, the edge of the wallpaper sheet is torn off the surface and the ceiling is additionally smeared with glue with a brush, and then the canvas is immediately applied and pressed.
  • But to paste over the ceiling with wallpaper does not mean that the process is over - it is necessary that everything is dry and does not lag behind. There should not be a hint of drafts in the room where repairs are being made, so you need to close all windows and doors until the ceiling lining is completely dry. Of course, this will take two or three days, but as a result you will get high-quality work, and if wallpaper has been pasted for painting, it is an excellent surface for realizing fantasies.

Useful tips. In order to grease the ceiling with a brush on the edge of the wallpaper, you need to moisten this brush in the glue that is on the floor and descend from the stepladder each time. You can do without it if you cut off half of a plastic bottle, draw glue into it and hang it on a wire hook to the step.

If the surface is uneven, the docking does not work, so in such places, glue the strips with an overlap. After that, run a sharp construction knife along the double scar and remove the cut strips. The joint will turn out flawless (see).

Conclusion

Wallpaper is glued to the ceiling both for painting and with a pattern, but the first option is much more economically profitable. After all, you understand how to paste over the ceiling with wallpaper and how to paint it. Making the second one is not only easier, but much cheaper, besides, the process of changing or updating colors can be done five or six times on the same wallpaper.

The most difficult task when finishing surfaces in a room can certainly be considered pasting the ceiling. We will talk about what secrets pasting the ceiling with wallpaper has.

- probably the most difficult and time-consuming process. If there are no dormer windows or sloping surfaces in the room, this type of work will be complicated only by the presence of sockets for light bulbs.

Another inconvenience is holding the sheet, so before you get to work, find yourself a partner who will follow the vertical and be able to hold the hanging edge of the sheet. Gluing wallpaper on the ceiling consists of several stages, which we will now consider in more detail.

Types of ceiling wallpaper

The first thing to do is to decide what finishing material will be used. We recommend choosing canvases with an embossed pattern or special ceiling wallpapers that have a denser structure.

They retain an attractive appearance for several years, thanks to dust-repellent characteristics.

Non-woven fabrics are quite convenient for carrying out such work as wallpapering the ceiling, since glue must be applied only to the surface to be glued.

Types of coatings:

  • paper-based synthetic coating;
  • synthetic coating on fabric;
  • PVC is a synthetic film.

They are suitable even for rooms with high humidity and are easy to clean. If soundproofing properties are important to you, choose textile fabrics.

Sequence of work

From the front page

Self-pasting using the "accordion" method

So, consider how to wallpaper the ceiling correctly. In order to stick the first strip evenly, use a level to draw a line that will become a guideline when performing work.

You can draw a line with a rope rubbed with chalk (for a white surface, the chalk must be colored). Attach both ends of the cord to the plane, pull back the middle and click.

We begin to glue the sheets from the window through which the most light enters the room. It is advisable to paste over the room with canvases, stretching them along the entire length of the room, so there will be fewer seams.

Applying glue and fixing canvases

The technology of gluing is not much different from covering walls with canvases. It is applied to the strips, the sheets are pressed against the surface and smoothed with a brush. At the joints, excess parts are cut off.

In the process, the canvas folds like an accordion and gradually unfolds on the surface. An assistant is needed precisely to hold the free edge of the harmonica.

If you do not know how to wallpaper the ceiling, consider this process in stages:

A prerequisite for quality work is platforms that will allow you to move along the entire length of the canvas. Give up the idea of using furniture as a support, stepping from the table to the chair, holding the sheet - it is very dangerous.

A good basis can serve as scaffolding flooring, laid on the steps of the stairs.

We glue wallpaper in the arch

Pasting the arch is similar to pasting the ceiling. Nobody has canceled the laws of gravity yet, and wallpapering the arch ceilings is a rather difficult task for one person.

The most inconvenient in this work is that the shape of the arch does not allow joining the pattern along the curved border.

For such work, canvases with a small abstract pattern are best suited. We recommend that you cover the inside of the arch with smooth paper and paint it in the same color as all the wallpaper in the room.

First of all, the front and back parts of the wall are pasted over, bending the left parts of the sheets to the arch opening. Then the facade walls are glued, and a rim is left around the entire opening, about 3 cm wide.

It overlaps with one strip, which is glued from the floor on one side of the arch and passes through the arch to the other side.

Note! When pasting arches with heavy canvases, use special PVA-based adhesives.

Summing up

Now you already know how to wallpaper the ceiling. We hope our article was useful to you. In order to more accurately understand the technological and practical issue, our website provides a detailed photo and video instruction in which you will find useful information on this issue.

How to make a ceiling in order to get a high-quality finish, plus an interesting interior? Where do you need to start, what is the order of work, and most importantly, how much will it all cost?
These are the questions that most often arise before us in anticipation of the repair. Our instructions will help you figure out how to do an inexpensive ceiling repair with your own hands.

The best way to level the surface

As you know, there are two ways to make the ceiling even - this is a gypsum screed, and dry plaster (drywall). Both options are great for painting and tiling.
Let's calculate what the price of the issue is and compare which leveling method is more economically beneficial, and whether there is such a benefit at all. We will consider the costs in the cheapest options for domestically produced materials.
Let's say you need to repair the ceiling in a room of 20 m2.
Then, for "wet" alignment you will need:

Their purpose and cost Purchase costs

Betonokontakt is an impregnation that improves the adhesion of layers. Its consumption depends on the porosity of the surface. The composition intended for concrete and building bricks is consumed in the range of 0.3-0.5 kg / m2.
  • Considering that you will have to process not only the base, but also the starting and finishing screed, it is better to take a universal option that is suitable not only for concrete, but also for plaster.

For the processing of a concrete base, we calculate the maximum consumption: 20 m2: 0.5 = 10 liters. Gypsum screed absorbs less than concrete, so both layers will take the same amount of soil. Only 20 liters.

The primer of domestic production "Prospectors" will cost only 370 rubles for a 10-liter canister. 2 canisters * 370 rubles. = 740 rubles.

To perform the screed, start and finish gypsum mixtures are used. When the ceiling has many irregularities, and the thickness of the screed must exceed 1 cm, it is better to use such a division.
  • The starting plaster is coarser in dispersion, and, accordingly, cheaper. It is designed to level the unevenness of the base.
  • A fine finishing mixture is used to correct the plastered surface. A relatively flat base can be leveled using the universal option.

On average, the consumption of mixtures for a screed thickness of 10 mm is 9 kg / m2. So for two layers of 20m2 screed, it will take 360kg, or 12 bags of 30kg.

The cost of universal mixtures of domestic production varies within 350 rubles per bag of 30 kg. 12 bags * 350 rubles. = 4200 rubles.
TOTAL 4940 rubles

Now let's calculate how much drywall filing will cost:

List of required materials Their purpose and cost Purchase costs

For the crate under the GKL, bars of 40 * 40 mm are taken. Of these, a grid with cells of 60 * 120 mm is mounted. Where two sheets will rest on one bar, either a wider bar (80 * 40) is taken, or a double belt is mounted. The price of a linear meter of timber is 30 rubles. 65 m.p * 30 = 1950 rubles.

Before installation, the bars must be treated with an antiseptic. Otherwise, during operation, they will dry out, or they may swell in case of water leakage from above, and cracks will appear on the ceiling. It will take no more than two liters of soil to process the crate. You can take an antiseptic imported from Pinotex. A can with a capacity of 2.7 liters costs 830 rubles.

GKL is a gypsum core enclosed in a cardboard shell. For filing the ceiling, a standard sheet measuring 2500 * 1200 * 9 mm is used. Including waste, 8 sheets are required for a 20m2 ceiling The cost of GKL of domestic production is 180 rubles per sheet. 8 * 180 = 1440 rubles.

Fiberglass tape is needed to seal the joints between the sheets. 1 roll of 90 meters is enough for a room. Its price is 85 rubles.

If surface preparation is carried out for wallpapering or, the entire area of the ceiling is not puttied, but only seams are closed. So, for the entire ceiling, one can of ready-made putty mixture weighing 5 kg is enough for you. Such a putty, as in the photo, will cost 230 rubles. for the bank.

Seams are treated with a primer before applying the first layer of putty. There will be two layers, and after drying, each is processed. One bottle with a capacity of 5 liters will be enough. You will spend no more than 100 rubles on its purchase.

From fasteners, you will need dowel-nails for fixing the bars to the ceiling, and self-tapping screws for attaching the plasterboard to the crate. Dowel-nails: 120 rubles per pack of 200 pieces Self-tapping screws price per kg: 80 rubles.
TOTAL 4835 rubles

As you can see, subject to independent work, the costs will be approximately the same. Now, your task is to figure out how to do the ceiling correctly.
If you have never done this before, look for articles with step-by-step instructions, watch the video. And we will think about how to decorate a surface so carefully prepared for finishing.

How and what to paste over the ceiling

Let's start with tiles

Styrofoam tiles are used for pasting the ceiling. It is lightweight and cuts easily.
The main thing is to correctly distribute it on the surface. This can be a checkerboard arrangement, diagonally, a snake. Much depends on the configuration and relief of the cladding.

So:

  • In order for the tile to be placed symmetrically on the surface, it is necessary to make markings. In the simplest version, you need to draw a longitudinal and transverse perpendicular axes along which the first rows of tiles will be located. With a diagonal arrangement of tiles, two more axes need to be drawn on the base.
  • If the room has the correct geometric shape, they will cross the ceiling from corner to corner. In other cases, the diagonal axes are drawn as bisectors to the right angles formed by the central axes, which, as everyone knows from the school geometry course, divide them in half.
  • Installation of tiled and panel cladding, in all cases, is carried out from the point of intersection of the axes, that is, from the center of the ceiling to the walls. This is done so that there are whole tiles over the entire area of the ceiling, and only those of them that will be adjacent to the junction of walls and ceiling would have to be cut.
    Then you don’t have to worry, even if the cut turns out to be uneven - it will still be hidden under the plinth.

  • To fix expanded polystyrene tiles, Moment-Installation, Liquid Nails or Dragon universal polymer adhesive is used. If you are pasting the ceiling without leveling, the floor slab must be cleaned of plaster or whitewash if it does not adhere tightly to the surface. In other cases, you can directly on the painted surface. The main thing is that the base is even.
  • Glue is applied to the tile in the corners and center, aged for five minutes until thickened. Then, the tile is pressed tightly against the ceiling and held for a couple of minutes.
    After sealing the joints with putty, many types of tiles can be painted. At the same time, they acquire a matte surface and the joints between the fragments of the cladding are practically invisible.
  • The installation of gypsum tiles is carried out in the same way, only the glue is used differently: gypsum. Another difference is that the extreme elements cannot be cut, as is the case with foam. Therefore, in the manufacture of gypsum cladding, the multiplicity of the length and width of the tile to the dimensions of the ceiling should be taken into account.

There are also ceiling panels, for example, bamboo, which are also mounted by analogy with tiles, with glue. With this finish, the number of whole panels that will fit on the ceiling area is calculated.
The remaining space around the perimeter is closed with a wide cornice made of plasterboard, or an interior frame baguette is used for framing. You can see a similar finish in the example above.

Roll coverings

What else can be pasted over the ceiling? Of course, this is wallpaper, and not only ceiling options for painting, but almost all types that are used for wall decoration.
The main thing is to choose the right color for a particular interior:

  • It can be combined with both wall decoration and furniture, textiles. In the photo below you can see how the room, sheathed with drywall, is finished. As you can see, the ceiling is covered with the same wallpaper as the walls. The wallpaper is matched with stripes, and positioned to visually enlarge the size of a small room.

  • Other types of roll coatings are also used to finish the ceiling. This is also wallpaper, but with a veneered surface: cork and bamboo canvas, stone and wooden wallpaper. In general, finishing the ceiling with rolled materials looks best in combination with other types of finishes.
  • In order not to cut the canvas in width, and not to see the joints, which are not always invisible, the ceiling cladding is often performed in a manner similar to that in the case of bamboo panels. Pay attention to the picture below: you also see a cornice along the perimeter of the ceiling, as well as a lintel in the center, hiding the junction of two canvases.

Roll coatings are glued in the same way as other types of wallpaper. A sheet of the desired size is cut off, on the reverse side of which glue is applied.
A piece of cloth impregnated with glue is applied to the base and smoothed out. The only difficulty is that it is inconvenient to glue wallpaper on the ceiling alone.
An assistant is needed to support the hanging end of the sheet. Otherwise, you should not have any problems in the process of performing such a finish.
