Research by Global Reach Consulting

The Russian turkey breeding industry continues to develop rapidly, and investments in the production of this type of poultry attract large agribusiness. The increase in demand for turkey meat comes against the backdrop of rising prices for red meat. Among the reasons for such a sharp increase in demand is an active marketing strategy of manufacturers with a reasonable price for the consumer, combined with an increase in the popularity of turkey in view of its beneficial properties and obvious advantages compared to other types of meat (dietary, low-fat, contains useful substances and trace elements, cholesterol levels significantly lower than other types of meat).

Due to the crisis and falling real incomes of the population, meat consumption is declining. However, the crisis played into the hands of less traditional categories for Russia: turkey production in 2016 increased by more than a third. According to Global Reach Consulting (GRC) analysts, in 2016 the volume of turkey meat production amounted to about 220 thousand tons in slaughter weight, which is 38.3% higher than in 2015. For 4 months of 2017, in relation to the indicator for the same period of the previous year, the growth was 55.5%.

For 10 years, the volume of production of turkey meat in the households of the population has remained practically at the same level, but the output on an industrial scale is constantly growing. Thus, the number of commercial poultry in agricultural organizations of the Russian Federation is increasing from year to year. Back in 2006, according to GRC calculations, its number was only 845 thousand heads. According to the results of 2016, the number of turkeys in agricultural organizations is estimated at almost 9 million heads, which is 40.5% more than a year earlier (rice. 1 ) .

The main trend of recent years, in addition to increasing capacity, was the active growth in the production of semi-finished products from turkey meat and the expansion of the existing range. Launching more products is a successful strategy: production growth is not so much due to volume, but due to the introduction of new types of products to the market. Most turkey producers confirmed that they have mastered and launched new types of products and cuts, as well as new products of deep processing.

The largest enterprise for growing turkeys in the Russian Federation until 2015 inclusive was the Eurodon company (Rostov region). By 2016, the company took second place in the all-Russian rating, losing the lead to Damate Group of Companies (Penza). The top three leaders according to the results of the year also included Bashkir Poultry Complex named after V.I. M. Gafuri.

In 2017, the situation on the market changed, and the balance of power among the players also changed. The position of the leader was retained by Damate Group of Companies - LLC PenzaMolInvest, which is part of the Group, is in first place with a share of 18.1% (rice. 2 ) . But in 2017, Tambovskaya Turkey LLC took second place. The project was implemented by the Cherkizovo Group of Companies together with the Spanish company Grupo Fuertes. In the autumn of 2015, the company has already put into operation sites for fattening and rearing poultry. Full design capacity was planned for 2017. At the first stage, the enterprise will produce 25-30 thousand tons of meat per year. In the future - increasing volumes up to 50 thousand tons per year.

In 2017, such a major player as Agrofirma Gertsevskaya LLC left the Russian turkey market. By a court decision, the company was declared bankrupt. Regioninvest Management Company LLC won the auction for the sale of more than 121,000 turkey chickens at an initial price of more than 20 million rubles. Previously, the property of the Gertsevskaya Agrofirma was put up for auction twice, but it was not sold due to the lack of applications either for the first time or at the second auction, when the price was reduced. It should be noted that the exit from the market of the agricultural company "Gertsevskaya" did not affect the overall dynamics of the market.

Imports of turkey meat have not had any impact on the Russian market lately. In 2016, the volume of imports of these products decreased by another 40.7% and amounted to only 3.4 thousand tons in the amount of $ 5.1 million (a drop in value was 60.2%). According to data for January-April 2017, imports of turkey meat amounted to only 1 thousand tons worth $ 2.2 million (this is less than 1% of the total market volume). In 2016–2017, only frozen turkey parts were supplied to Russia (100% of imports). There were no deliveries of chilled meat, as well as uncut carcasses. Until 2014, Turkey was the leader in supplies in this segment. In 2015, the supply of meat from this country decreased by more than 60%. Currently, imports come mainly from Brazil, but also from Chile.

However, if we talk about hatching eggs and rearing poults, then Russia, as before, is almost completely dependent on imported “material”, about 80% of which, according to data for January-April 2017, was provided by France and Canada. In the first place in the supply of turkey hatching eggs to Russia in 2017 is the Dutch company Hendrix Genetics, which has a representative office in France (Hendrix Genetics Turkeys France S.A.S). Hendrix Genetics plans to build an incubator for the production of eggs and young turkeys in Russia. The production capacity of the new poultry complex can reach 6.5 million hatching turkey eggs and 60-70 thousand heads of turkey poults. The company has not yet specified either the region where the enterprise will be built or the volume of investments in construction. According to market participants, the site can provide a factory with a capacity of 50,000 tons of turkey meat per year.

In the coming years, an increase in the available market resource is predicted, primarily due to the continued growth of domestic production. It should be noted that in the conditions of rapid saturation of the Russian market, it is necessary to develop exports. To date, many large companies are already exporting their products to Ukraine, for example, Eurodon, Zadonskaya Poultry Farm CJSC (Lipetsk region), Krasnobor CJSC (Tula region) and Tambov Turkey supply their products to Ukraine. BOD them. M. Gafuri exports products to Vietnam. Damate was one of the first to export turkey back in 2015 and now supplies products to Asia, Africa, the EU and the United Arab Emirates.

Even 10 years ago, the industrial production of turkey meat in Russia was not developed. Mostly frozen products from Brazil and EU countries were found on the market. In the middle of 2004, Eurodon Group of Companies began to create the country's first large industrial complex for growing and processing turkeys in the Rostov Region.

Main market players

The production of poultry meat in general from 2006 to 2016 increased from 1632 to 4552 thousand tons (2.8 times). The turkey market is growing at a faster pace - during the analyzed period, its production in slaughter weight increased from 28.2 thousand tons to 226 thousand tons (8 times), and the share in the Russian volume of poultry meat production in 2016 was 5%.

Figure 1. Dynamics of turkey meat production, 2006–2016, thousand tons

In the structure of producers, according to IMIT, 98.5% is occupied by agricultural organizations, 1.5% is accounted for by household plots and peasant farms. Turkey producers can be classified as follows.

  1. Leaders of the federal level (production volume of more than 25 thousand tons of meat in slaughter weight per year):
  • LLC "Evrodon";
  • GC "Damate".
  1. Major players at the federal level (production volume from 15 to 25 thousand tons in carcass weight per year):
  • LLC "Bashkir poultry complex named after. M. Gafuri”;
  • ZAO Krasnobor.
  1. Major players at the regional level (production volume from 5 to 15 thousand tons in carcass weight per year):
  • Agro-Plus (Stavropol Territory) - 6.6 thousand tons per year;
  • Poultry farm "Zadonskaya" (Lipetsk region) - about 12 thousand tons per year, etc.
  1. Small regional producers.

Today there is a new player in the 1st group - GK "Cherkizovo" ("Tambov Turkey"). The Cherkizovo Group is one of the three leaders in the poultry meat market in Russia. Tambov Turkey is an international project that the company has been implementing since 2012 in partnership with Grupo Fuertes, the largest turkey producer in Spain.

At the end of 2016, Cherkizovo Group launched all facilities of the planned complex for 50 thousand tons in live weight (about 40 thousand tons in carcass weight). If Eurodon and Damate specialize in growing heavy crosses, then Cherkizovo has occupied a free niche for the production of carcasses of medium-heavy grade maker crosses with a low fat content.

Figure 2. The largest producers of turkey meat in Russia, thousand tons

Damate increased production by 75% in 2016, according to Agrifood Strategies. She completed the implementation of the complex and brought it to a design capacity of 60 thousand tons in carcass weight per year. The long-term leader, Vadim Vaneev's Eurodon group, was in second place: production amounted to 59.9 thousand tons, according to Agrifood Strategies. Perhaps this is due to the outbreak of bird flu at Eurodon production sites at the end of December 2016. This year, Eurodon plans to regain leadership by increasing volumes by 20% - up to 90 thousand tons in live weight. Damate will also increase production, but not by much: the growth will be "insignificant," a company spokesman said.

The shares of these two main federal players in 2016 did not change much compared to 2015. Damate demonstrated the highest growth, having won 26.9% of the Russian market, Eurodon accounted for 26.5%.

Production in the Leningrad region

Thanks to targeted support for small poultry farms in the Leningrad Region in 2010–2015. several poultry farms were established, including those for fattening turkeys.

In the Leningrad Region and the Northwestern Federal District, there are no players at the federal level. Plans were announced to create a production facility of about 10 thousand tons per year, but so far they have not been implemented.

To date, five manufacturers are represented in the region. The share of the largest of them, Concord LLC, is 79%. The company is the largest producer of chilled turkey meat in the Northwestern Federal District: about 3 thousand tons of finished products per year, according to its own data.

Currently, the farm has three sites. The very first one, with an area of 2 hectares, is located in the village of Annolovo, Tosnensky district, where production began. Heavy cross BUT BIG-6 eggs are incubated in Europe and the chicks are brought here for quarantine.

The second site is located in the village of Pogi. Here the bird is reared and fattened to slaughter age. There is also a slaughterhouse and a processing shop in Pogy.

The third site of 38 hectares is located in Novaya village. A modern, fully automated turkey farm will be built there. Concord LLC plans to increase production to 10.5 thousand tons of turkey meat per year.

Trud LLC was recently bought out by Dmitry Novikov, owner of the Rosengineering project company, and Boris Paikin, co-owner of the Fort Group development company. Enterprise capacity: maintenance of up to 100 thousand annual livestock of turkey, production of 1.5 thousand tons of turkey meat per year. The cost of the project is more than 200 million rubles, the total area of buildings is about 8.5 thousand square meters. m, which include five buildings for floor keeping of turkeys for 5 thousand heads each, as well as a slaughterhouse for 200 heads per hour.

The company's products are produced under the Luga Turkey brand with a volume of less than 1 thousand tons. Seven poultry houses are currently being built, which will increase the capacity to 1.8 thousand tons per year. At the second stage, it is planned to build another 50 poultry houses in two years in order to increase the capacity to 10 thousand tons per year. In parallel, the opening of new stores of the Luzhskaya Turkey network will take place. In 2017, it is planned to increase their number to 25–30 outlets (currently eight outlets in St. Petersburg and one in the region). By 2020, the company plans to increase production in the Luga region to 40,000 tons of turkey per year, building a total of up to 200 poultry houses. In the future, it is possible to create an incubator and a feed mill.

* Export before 2014 is negligible or non-existent.

Svirskoye LLC (Kondushi village, Lodeynopolsky district) purchased the premises of the abandoned cowsheds of the former state farm and carried out reconstruction, opting for the BUT BIG-6 cross. Canadian eggs are incubated in Europe (Germany), day-old chicks are brought to quarantine to the Concord company, and then they go to Svirskoye for rearing and fattening. According to the project, it is planned to build two poultry houses with a total capacity of 4.8 thousand heads of one-time maintenance (about 0.15 thousand tons per year in slaughter weight). In 2016, the enterprise produced about eight tons of turkey meat, according to the committee for the agro-industrial complex and the RCC of the Leningrad Region.

Import and export

In recent years, there has been a steady decline in imports of turkey meat to the Russian Federation: last year, according to experts, it amounted to 3.4 thousand tons. In relation to 2006, import volumes decreased by more than 24 times.

Most of the meat (98%) is imported as frozen parts of carcasses and offal. They do not enter the retail trade, but are consumed by the meat processing industry as a raw material for production. About 98% is supplied frozen, fresh meat is less than 2% and costs 1.5 times more on average (according to the calculations of the Agriconsult group of companies based on the customs statistics of the Russian Federation).

As for the development of foreign markets, Russia has an export potential, analysts say. While the volume of exports of turkey meat from the Russian Federation is insignificant compared to domestic production, however, there is a clear upward trend in the indicator. In 2016, commercial deliveries of turkey products for export began, exports increased six times - up to 3 thousand tons. The main buyers are the countries of Southeast Asia, Africa and Europe.

The first export shipments took place at Damate in the fall of 2015. Today, the Group's enterprises are certified for export to the countries of West Africa, the Customs Union, Serbia, Iran, Gabon, and Azerbaijan. The following shipments are planned to the countries of Southeast Asia.

At the beginning of 2016, PenzaMolInvest (part of Damate Group of Companies) received permission to export to the UAE. An important role was played by the fact that Damate Group of Companies has a certificate for the production of halal products, which it confirms for the third year in a row.

In the first half of 2016, two Russian exporters (Krasnobor and PenzaMolInvest) sent trial shipments of turkey meat to the Netherlands in the amount of 110 kg and 50 kg, respectively. In the halal segment, Eurodon Group last year carried out trial deliveries abroad (turkey carcasses "Halal-Indolina").

Turkey Meat Market Capacity

In general, in Russia, the consumption of turkey meat in 2016 amounted to about 1.55 kg per person per year. For comparison: in the European Union it is 4 kg per capita per year, in the USA - more than 10 kg. However, according to Agrifood Strategies forecasts, in the next 3-5 years, turkey consumption in the country will double and amount to 525 thousand tons.

Based on the data of retail audits conducted by Agriconsult Group of Companies, it can be concluded that the range of turkey products in retail chains is expanding. A few years ago, only cutting was presented, today there are products of deep processing (sausages, smoked meats, etc.).

The main reserves of growth in the consumption of turkey meat are in meat processing and food service. According to Agrifood Strategies, by 2020, 25-30% of domestic turkeys will be sold in thermally processed form (ham, boiled-smoked breast, sausages, sausages, etc.), 10-15% - in the form of chilled and frozen semi-finished products, another 10-15% - through the food service. Therefore, the level of turkey consumption will also depend on the state of the adjacent and main competing sectors of the meat market.

Investment projects and industry prospects

Several major investment projects are currently being implemented in the industry. The joint project of the Cherkizovo group and Grupo Fuertes Tambov Turkey with a capacity of 50 thousand tons per year is at the final stage. Damate Group plans to reach the volume of 100 thousand tons in 2018. The Eurodon company in 2017 plans to increase production to 100 thousand tons of meat.

Smaller projects have also been announced and are being implemented. Thus, in the Lipetsk region in July 2016, the Krivets-Ptitsa complex was launched with a planned capacity of 9 thousand tons of turkey per year (by 2020). RuskomAgro Holding has begun construction of a turkey-breeding enterprise in the Tyumen region. Reaching full capacity - 10 thousand tons in live weight (8.9 thousand tons of meat) - is scheduled for 2018. A turkey production project has been announced in the Krasnoyarsk Territory. The investor, Yeniseiagrosoyuz, wants to invest 800 million rubles and build 20 new buildings on the basis of the former Indyushkino poultry farm. The capacity of the complex will be 13 thousand tons per year. In the Republic of Udmurtia, at the end of 2016, the Askor company launched a complex for 6 thousand tons (by 2018).

Trends:

  • The growth rate of the domestic turkey market is high: in 2016, compared to 2006, the volume of production increased eight times. At the same time, growth is mainly provided only by increasing industrial production. This trend is expected to continue.
  • One of the main trends is the reduction in the share of imported products. If in 2006 it was 76% of the market capacity, then by 2013 it had decreased to 10%. The growth of the market is due to the increase in domestic production.
  • The main industrial genetics used in turkey production is foreign, that is, modern Russian turkey breeding is focused on imported hybrid hatching eggs or day old turkey poults. Only "Eurodon" has its own parent flock for the reproduction of birds.

Problems:

  • Three or four companies supply turkey meat to large retail chains; turkey meat is limitedly represented in the regions. Thus, the development of the market is actually constrained by production volumes.
  • Theoretically, the limiting factor is the income of the population. Currently, the price of cut turkey meat exceeds 200 rubles per kilogram. This is almost twice the price of broiler meat.
  • Start-up and expansion opportunities for new and existing turkey companies will be severely limited by the lack of skilled manpower.

At the end of last year, Agriconsult conducted research on the Russian market for turkey meat. According to the results of the study, turkey production is growing rapidly. But in general, the consumption of turkey meat is still at a low level - about 2% of the consumption of all poultry meat. The following factors contribute to this:

Historical features that are currently losing their significance in the field of taste preferences of Russian consumers (change of mentality and integration into the world community);
- production and the market began to take shape relatively recently, most domestic manufacturers do not have enough experience and competencies compared to world leaders. Foreign capital and technology will not be invested in the production of turkey meat in the near future (the exception is the Cherkizovo Group of Companies, which is implementing its new project together with the leader of the Spanish turkey meat market, Grupo Fuertes).

MARKET STRUCTURE OF THE TURKEY

A number of experts estimate the market for turkey meat at 100 thousand tons in carcass weight in 2011. Compared to 2010, the market decreased by 4,000 tons (by 4.3%). This is due to the drop in imports.

TURKEY PRODUCTION IN THE MEAT PRODUCTION STRUCTURE

In Russia, meat production is growing steadily (Table 1).
tab.1

During the period from 2006 to 2011, the production of the main types of livestock and poultry in slaughter weight increased from 5209 to 7410 thousand tons (+42.2%), including poultry - from 1632 to 3174 thousand tons (+94.5 %), pigs - from 1699 to 2414 thousand tons (+42.1%), sheep and goats - from 156 to 188 thousand tons (+20.5%). Cattle production decreased from 1809 to 1635 thousand tons (-9.6%).
The growth in turkey production over this period is proportional to the growth in poultry production - from 28.2 to 65 thousand tons (130%).

PRODUCTION STRUCTURE OF TURKEY MEAT

According to the data of the Federal State Statistics Service of the Russian Federation and the assessment of a number of experts, the growth in turkey meat production is due to agricultural organizations, from 2006 to 2011 the growth in industrial production amounted to about 180%, or 36 thousand tons.
It is impossible to determine the growth of turkey meat production among the population. According to the results of the agricultural census in 2006, this figure amounted to about 8 thousand tons (28% of the total production), and by 2011, according to experts, it had dropped to 10-15% of the total production.

CONSUMPTION OF TURKEY MEAT

In general, the turkey market in Russia is not saturated: according to various sources, consumption ranges from 0.64 to 0.9 kilograms per person per year. Consumption is distributed unevenly. In Moscow, St. Petersburg and other large cities, consumption is much higher. In small towns and rural settlements, turkey products are presented in much smaller quantities, or not at all.
It is worth noting that the consumption of turkey in different countries varies significantly. Thus, in 2011, the United States, the largest consumer of these products, accounted for 7.4 kilograms per capita per year, Canada - 4.2 kilograms, and the European Union (an average of 27 countries) - 3.8 kilograms of turkey meat.

MAIN MANUFACTURERS

According to Agriconsult research, competition in the Russian turkey market is not very high, except for regions with intensive consumption, primarily Moscow. At the same time, the market is characterized by a rather high concentration: in 2012, the 3 largest enterprises provided more than 60% of production (52% of the market), and the 8 largest players accounted for 86% of the total production (63% of the market). The main producers of turkey meat are: Eurodon (39% of the market), Agroholding Yeniseisky (15%), Krasnobor (12%), Bashkir Poultry Complex named after M. Gafuri (9%), Yegoryevsk poultry farm (5% ), Poultry farm "Zadonskaya" (3%), Agrofirma "Gertsevskaya" (2%), "Concord" (1%), others (14%).

PROSPECTS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF DOMESTIC TURKEY BREEDING

The total resource of the turkey meat market in Russia is declining every year, which is due to a reduction in imports. In the coming years, a further decline in imports is expected. First of all, this is due to the further growth of domestic production: by 2015, imports are projected to decrease to 22-23 thousand tons.
In general, according to the assessment of Agriconsult Group of Companies and other industry experts, the total market resource will grow due to domestic production - this is due to an increase in the production of existing poultry farms and the emergence of new players on the market.
Leading enterprises, such as LLC Evrodon (Rostov Region) and LLC Agroholding Yeniseisky (Krasnoyarsk Territory, part of the Agroholding Sibirskaya Gubernia), are introducing new complexes for growing turkeys. As for new projects, according to various sources, up to 35 investment projects have been announced in Russia, the largest and most realistic of which are:
- OOO APK "Damate" (Penza region) - in July 2012, the first stage of the construction of the complex was completed and a hatchery for 1.8 million turkey eggs per year was opened. The design capacity, planned by 2015, should be 60,000 tons of turkey meat per year. The volume of investments is 7.4 billion rubles.
- GK "Cherkizovo" (Tambov region) - the implementation of the project has just begun. The launch is planned for 2014. According to the plan of the enterprise, the design capacity will be 40 thousand tons of turkey meat per year. The volume of investments is 4 billion rubles.
- CJSC "Nevyansk Poultry Farm" (Sverdlovsk region) - in 2013 it is planned to open the first stage of the poultry complex (10 thousand tons of meat per year). Design capacity will be reached at the time of commissioning of the second and third stages in 2015. The estimated capacity is 30 thousand tons of meat per year, and the volume of investments is 6 billion rubles.

GROWTH RATES OF DOMESTIC PRODUCTION

All experts predict an increase in domestic turkey production. Another issue is growth rates. For example, according to some estimates, out of a large number of announced projects, many will not be implemented in principle, or they will be implemented, but not on the stated dates or in full.
According to analysts, turkey production in 2013 will reach 252,000 tons in carcass weight, and by 2015 it will grow to 332,000 tons.
According to Agriconsult and other industry experts, by 2015 Russia's turkey meat production is likely to reach 109,000 tons slaughter or 153,000 tons live. This is the most realistic forecast.
During 2006-2011, the share of turkey production did not exceed 1% in the total structure of meat production (2% in the structure of poultry farming), and the resource of the turkey market was constantly decreasing. Despite this, in the long term until 2015, due to the intensive growth of domestic production, all experts predict active market growth: according to minimal estimates - up to 44% over 4 years.
