Wood stool designs. Folding stool

There are some activities for which a small chair is simply necessary. In the country, I needed a compact folding chair for a long time. However, the chair with the back seemed too bulky to me. Having considered several projects of sliding furniture, I decided to make a folding stool with my own hands. The main advantage of this design is that, when assembled, such a transformer is a small piece of wood with a convenient handle for carrying and storing it in the trunk of a car. Those who use such stools highly appreciated their convenience on outdoor picnics and fishing trips.

Tools

To make a folding stool with my own hands, I needed the following tools:

  • jigsaw;
  • hacksaw;
  • drill;
  • screwdriver;
  • vise;
  • reamer ø 1 cm;
  • grinder;
  • a head with a collar for nuts;
  • die for threading M 6;
  • tape measure and ruler;
  • clamps;
  • pencil.

materials

I bought almost all the materials necessary for making a folding wooden stool with my own hands in a building materials store. Some of the little things I had. Total materials turned out:

  • pine timber 300 x 4 x 2 cm - 1 pc.;
  • board 234 x 4 x 1 cm - 1 pc.;
  • screws 4 cm - 16 pcs.;
  • emery wheels - 2 pcs.;
  • bolts ø 6 mm, length 4 cm - 10 pcs.;
  • nuts, washers, grovers (spring washers) - each type, 10 pcs.;
  • metal tube with inner ø 8 mm, length 195 mm;
  • piece of reinforcement ø 6 mm, length 31.5 cm.

Step-by-step instructions on how to make a folding stool with your own hands

  1. I fixed the crossbars with clamps, putting a temporary spacer between them.
  2. Laying on the upper surface of the crossbars of the board in the amount of 6 pcs. with gaps between them of 10 mm, fixed them with screws. It turned out a seat measuring 390 x 290 mm.
  3. From the reinforcement ø 6 mm I cut off a piece 315 mm long with a hacksaw.
  4. The armature was clamped in a vise. At the ends of the segment, I cut the thread for M 6 nuts with a die.
  5. I threaded the hairpin through the hole in one of the inner legs. I put a metal tube (tsarga) on the hairpin.
  6. The other end of the hairpin was threaded through the hole in the second inner leg.
  7. I secured the ends of the stud on the outside of the legs with nuts, having previously put on washers and grovers. The nuts were tightened with a socket head.
  8. I inserted bolts into the remaining holes of furniture parts, which I secured on the other side with nuts. Under the nuts I put grovers and washers. Growers are necessary so that the nuts under the pressure of the springs cannot spontaneously turn away.

Having checked the reliability of the connections, I finished assembling the furniture.

Stages

First of all, you should prepare for the upcoming work. To do this, it is necessary to highlight the main stages. First, it is necessary to determine what material the stool will be made of. Secondly, you need to make a drawing. Next, prepare all the necessary tools that will be needed during works, and buy material.

Material for manufacturing

The stool can be made of different materials such as glass, metal, plastic and others. You can also combine metal and wood or metal and glass. There are many options for making stools. But at the initial stage it is recommended to start with a tree.

After all wooden stool make it the easiest. It will also fit into any interior. To do wood stool, you need to buy bars. The size of the section of the bars should be 30 by 30 millimeters. Next, you need 2 wooden boards. The thickness of the boards should be 20 millimeters. The width must be taken 145 millimeters, and the length - 300 millimeters. To work with wood, you need sandpaper. You also need to buy 12mm plywood, screws, varnish and glue.

Stool drawing

For clarity and to simplify the work, a drawing should be made. On it you need to draw all the details from which it will be made wooden stool, and indicate their dimensions. In the drawing, all details must be indicated proportionally, using a certain scale. It is recommended to start with the simplest stool with rectangular legs. But if there is self-confidence, then, as an option, you can do handmade stool made of wood with carved legs. Now in stores there are ready-made blanks for carpentry. Therefore, it is worth taking a closer look at such a range of goods, perhaps there are ready-made carved legs in order to use them to make wooden stool with your own hands. Blueprints should be supplemented with such details.

The drawing is a kind of design project for a stool. Therefore, it is necessary to draw a finished product on it, as well as place separately all the details that will be needed to create this piece of furniture. Next to each part, you must indicate its size and quantity. Dimensions are usually indicated in millimeters.

Tools

In order for the process of making a stool to take place with pleasure and nothing to distract from work, it is necessary to prepare tools.

1. You will need a saw. Since the parts of the stool are small in size, a small tool will do. You can also use a miter saw.

2. A screwdriver is an essential tool for assembling a stool.

3. Drill and drill of the right size.

4. Planer.

5. Jigsaw.

6. Self-tapping screws.

7. Ruler for measuring sizes.

8. Pencil.

9. Corner.

10. Paint brush.

Step by step instructions: how to make a stool out of wood

After the workplace and all the necessary materials and tools for future work have been prepared, you can proceed to the process of creating a stool. In order to understand how to make a wooden stool with your own hands , at the initial stage, you should follow the step-by-step instructions.

1. Work should start with the legs. It is necessary to take and measure the length of each leg on it, it is 430 millimeters. On the bar with a ruler and a pencil, you need to draw lines. Next, cut the block into 4 pieces.

2. The next stage of work is the preparation of the seat of the future stool. To do this, take 2 boards with a width of 145 millimeters and a length of 300 millimeters. You can also make a seat from one piece, then you should take a wide board to match its width. It is better if the seat is solid. This option will simplify the assembly process and provide the stool with greater strength.

3. Next, you need to make parts for the frame. They are made from plywood. It is necessary to cut blanks for the frame measuring 100 millimeters by 270 millimeters. We make a stool frame from plywood blanks. The plates are folded into a square, legs are placed in the corners of the square.

4. Then we assemble the stool. To do this, grease the pre-prepared holes with glue and fasten the screws.

5. Finished solid wood stool must be sanded with sandpaper.

6. The final stage of work is varnishing. It is better to do this in several layers. Allow each layer to dry before applying the next.

Stool with folded legs

Those who already have some experience in carpentry can be offered to make a stool with legs apart.

1. First we make bars. In order to avoid unevenness, you need to take 4 identical bars, set the angle saw to 5 degrees and cut everything at once.

3. Then you need to take small bars for spacers. For their fastening it is necessary to make holes on the inside of the legs. When fastening the spacers, first apply glue, and then screw in the bolts.

4. In the upper part of the stool, it is necessary to make holes for attaching the legs, grease them with glue, and then attach the legs.

6. The final stage of work is the manufacture of the cover, it is better if it is from a solid board.

Such a stool will look good with a soft seat. The process of its manufacture is also not at all complicated. Foam rubber is cut to the size of the seat, it is covered with fabric on top. It can be any material, such as leather, fur, velvet, etc. The color scheme can also be varied. The seat can be patterned or plain. It all depends on taste preferences and interior style. The fabric is attached to the chair with a special furniture stapler.

You can also leave the seat just wooden. In this case, it must be sanded and covered with stain and varnish or use paints for woodworking. Perhaps someone wants to paint a stool, apply a floral pattern or some kind of ornament. Since the manufacturing process is creative, you can use colored enamel instead of varnish or come up with other design options.

Manufacturing options

You can facilitate the process of making a stool by ordering all the details in a carpentry workshop. It remains only to assemble everything into a single structure and do the decor on your own. This option is more suitable for women, as it does not require special efforts. Also, finished parts can be sold in specialized hardware stores. At home, it remains to assemble a stool, like a designer, and start decorating.

Decoration options

First of all, you need to know for which room the stool is made. Depending on the stylistic orientation, you should choose its appearance. Perhaps, at the stage of carpentry, it will be necessary to make carved legs or include some non-standard element in the design, it can also be made of wood. Much depends on the style of the interior in which this piece of furniture is supposed to be placed. For example, in a girl's nursery, you can make a model with a colored fur seat. And for a boy, a stool in a marine or military style is suitable. There are a lot of performance options. If there is not enough imagination, then you can look at special design publications that specialize in this area, and make original chairs and stools from wood.

A stool is one of the types of furniture and is intended mainly for use in the kitchen.

A regular, classic stool consists of:

  • Lid — 1 pc.
  • Legs - 4 pcs.
  • Tsarga - 4 pcs.
  • Prolegs - 4 pcs.

If someone wants to make a stool with their own hands, then no special difficulties are expected.

Of course, if you have never made wood, then on the first try you may not be able to make a high-quality and reliable stool. But this does not mean at all that you should not try your hand at carpentry.

Wooden stool

If you decide to make a stool out of wood, then for this purpose you will need:

  • planed, without knots, wormholes and splits board, 25 mm thick.
  • cranial bar;

  • electric saw or hacksaw with a small tooth stroke;
  • sunk self-tapping screws 30 pieces per stool measuring 6 × 60 mm;
  • screwdriver;

  • metal square: it does not allow errors, unlike a wooden one;
  • metal meter or tape measure;
  • emery skin;

  • any small bar that we will wrap with emery cloth to sand the surfaces of the parts.

Cooking the lid

The lid must be square in shape and its dimensions may vary within:

  • 32x32;
  • 36x36;
  • 40x40.

These are the most optimal dimensions taken as a basis in the production of stools. However, since the stool is performed independently, then the dimensions of the body of family members can also be taken into account.

When buying lumber, keep in mind that it must be dry.

Dry lumber is planed without a burr, lends itself well to sanding, it will not dry out in the future, self-tapping screws will not fall out and the product will not turn into a rickety stool.

Since we are making a stool for the first time, we choose the size 40x40, so it will be easier to understand and learn how to work on our own.

It is advisable to choose a board with a width of 20 centimeters, then there will be no need to plan off extra centimeters.

We saw off two pieces of 40 centimeters along the length of the board.

We take sandpaper 40–60 K, wind it on a bar and begin to clean the edges and ends of the workpieces. If there are pronounced irregularities on the plane, then we clean it with the same sandpaper.

At the second stage of stripping, we use sandpaper 80–120 K. We also pass along the plane, edge and ends.

At the final stage, we use paper grade 160–320 K.

It is possible that another type of sandpaper may be needed: a lot depends on the type of wood and the sawing tool used.

Cooking tsars

From a board 20 cm wide, we saw off a piece, 27-28 centimeters long.

We dissolve it on a circular saw into 4 parts of 5 centimeters each.

We take a 40–60 K brand emery cloth and carefully clean the ends so that in the future there are no gaps between the side and the leg.

First, with an emery cloth of the brand 80–120 K, then we clean the surfaces with 160–320 K.

Cooking

We saw off from the board a segment of the same length as the tsarga. We dissolve on a circular saw 4 blanks of 3-4 centimeters.

We take a 40–60 K grade sandpaper and carefully clean the ends to avoid a gap between the prog and the leg. We clean the surfaces with a sandpaper grade 80–120 K.

To complete the manufacture of the workpiece, we use a skin of 160–320 K.

Cooking legs

From the cranial bar with a section of 3x3 centimeters, we saw off 4 segments 42 centimeters long.

Grinding sandpaper brand 40-60 K, we clean one end, which will be under the cover of the stool.

We polish the surfaces of the legs first with a sandpaper of 80–120 K, and then with a sandpaper of 160–320 K. The legs are ready.

Stool assembly

We take two legs, lay them out on a workbench or table, cleaned end up. Between them from above, flush with the end of the leg, we lay the drawer. From the bottom of the legs, between them, at a distance of 10 centimeters from the lower end, we lay a proleg.

We fix it on self-tapping screws on both sides, a drawstring with legs and a proleg with legs.

We do the same with the second pair of legs.

We fix with self-tapping screws the remaining two drawers and prolegs, on both sides of the legs on one of the assembled structures, at the same level as the already installed elements.

We put the second assembled structure on top and fix it on the screws.

We put the assembled structure on the legs, distribute the blanks from the cover from above, and fix them with self-tapping screws.

The stool is ready.

Photo ideas on how to make a stool with your own hands

A stool is an integral element, a must-have fixture in any home. You can't call it too expensive or rare to be taken for hand-made, but a hand-made stool is sure to be more durable and elegant than a standard item from any store. This is what we will talk about today.

As with any more or less serious work, you need to be well prepared to create a stool.

List of required tools

The first step is to prepare all the tools that you might need. You need to prepare different tools, as we will look at various photos of stools, from which you can do the work yourself.

The list looks something like this:

  • jigsaw;
  • drill;
  • screwdriver;
  • screwdriver;
  • drill;
  • sandpaper, and ideally a grinder;
  • fine-toothed hacksaw;
  • pencil;
  • ruler or corner.

Materials for making a stool

In addition to tools, of course, you will also need materials for making a stool. Their list can be limited to the following items:

  • marker;
  • roulette;
  • beam;
  • slats;
  • plywood
  • foam rubber;
  • textile;
  • buttons, nails, screws.

Possible stool options

Since stools are considered a fairly common option for seating devices, there are many varieties of them. We believe that it is necessary to consider the most convenient and popular ones in order to know for sure what you can do with your own hands.

The most popular options are below:

  • in the form of an ordinary chair;
  • small stool suitable for balconies and for use as a stand. Often has a height of no more than 25 centimeters;
  • upholstered stool. It resembles an ordinary stool in the form of a chair, but due to the presence of soft upholstery, it is often used in modern kitchens;
  • folding option. The well-known folding stool, on which grandmothers sit in the markets, fishermen fishing and summer residents in summer cottages.

To dot the "i", we suggest you look at the photos of the stools that we have given in the classification.

The stool, which we want to consider first, is ideal for both the kitchen and the glazed loggia, where you can sit down to relax and drink tea. It will have crossed legs, fastened with timber for greater structural stability. The seat of the stool will be covered with fabric, under which foam rubber will be located. This upholstered stool is the perfect seat for any kitchen.

Naturally, in order to do everything right, it’s not enough just to follow the instructions, you need to carefully study the drawing, which we recommend that you do.

Characteristics of the bars

To make a stool, we need to prepare the bars. Their characteristics will be as follows:

  • the length of the bars from which the legs will be made is 48 centimeters;
  • the location of the intersection of the legs is 24 centimeters from either side.

Making a wooden stool

We make legs and base

The first thing you need to take on is the legs of your future stool. Let's get down to business:

  1. Take a pre-prepared beam and saw off 4 special blanks from it, the length of which will be 60 centimeters each.
  2. Make saw cuts that will be directed at the correct angle of 45 degrees.
  3. Use a special miter box to saw off the legs, which can guarantee you exactly the right angle. So you will not waste valuable materials and redo the wrong work.
  4. After making four legs, they must be fastened in pairs.
  5. Make special grooves located at the intersection of the legs. Observe the depth of the groove at half the width of the leg.
  6. When the grooves are made, the legs must be extremely accurately installed in them, without going beyond the boundaries. As a result, you will get a cruciform blank. Or rather, there will be two of them.
  7. It's time to work on the stability and strength of the future chair. To do this, you need to make a special bar that fastens the crosses of the legs together. The length of the beam will be the same as your future stool. And if you make a stool, the diagram of which was placed above, the size of the timber should be 60 centimeters.
  8. Prepare special grooves for the screw heads that will hold the fastening beam on both sides of the cross legs.
  9. Fasten the crosses together by screwing the groove to their centers with screws.
  10. Fill the slots for the screw heads with wood filler so that the fastening points are not visible.
  11. But strengthening the legs in the area of their crossing is not enough. You also need to fasten them with bars and at the top. Similarly, use screws (2 for each of the crosses) with which to attach the bars of equal length to the cut at an angle of 45 degrees, the parts of the legs located on top.
  12. Seal up the screw holes to make them invisible.

The legs are ready and it remains for you to paint their base in the color that you like best.

We perform sitting

When making a stool for the kitchen, a soft seat is something that must be present in its design. Luckily, it's not that hard to make.

In order to make a durable seat, you need plywood. Its thickness is not too important, but a thickness of less than 12 millimeters is not recommended, since such a seat will be too flimsy.

Let's get down to business:

  1. Take a circular saw, a jigsaw or a good old saw, and cut out with their help a rectangular piece of plywood, the dimensions of which will correspond to the dimensions of the chair base. In our case, it is 60 by 40 centimeters.
  2. Take scissors and cut off a piece of foam rubber, the size of which will be equal to the size of the seat itself.
  3. Next, cut off the lining material. As for its size, it should exceed the size of the seat itself by about 30 percent. Such a reserve is made in order to be able to fix the matter under the seat in the future.
  4. Lay out the prepared materials in the following sequence: matter, foam rubber, plywood.
  5. Fold the corners of the fabric under the cover of the future stool.
  6. Take the material that will serve as the upholstery for your chair. It must be put on the seat from above, and attached from the bottom side with the help of special buttons. Buttons with plastic caps are ideal. They look quite aesthetically pleasing while holding matter in place very securely.

Congratulations, the part you will sit on in the future can also be considered finished.

We collect a wooden stool with our own hands

Finally, a few details of the future stool, your own production, are assembled.

But by "assembled", we mean that they are made. And now they have to really be assembled so that the stool can begin to be used.

Let's just say - the work is very simple. You just need to attach the finished base to the seat.

  1. Get the right screws.
  2. Use them to attach the seat to the base of the future stool.
  3. Use 2 screws on each side.
  4. If desired, you can mask the heads of the screwed screws with wood filler.

Your kitchen stool is made and ready for a long and reliable service.

DIY folding stool

Everyone knows what a folding stool is, and this, by the way, has been known for a very long time. This is an indispensable assistant for fishing, outdoors, this is something that you cannot do without in the country. And instead of going to the market and spending money on a stool of suspicious quality, you can also make it yourself.

Stool: dimensions and drawing

The design of such a folding chair is painfully simple, but still, it is necessary to use the drawings so that everything comes out clearly and without unnecessary snags. Therefore, we offer you the ideal drawing for consideration.

Necessary materials

To create all the necessary elements separately and assemble them into a single whole in the end, you will need the following devices:

  1. Completely identical bars in the amount of 4 pieces. Their parameters should be 47 by 4 and 2 centimeters in length, width, and thickness, respectively.
  2. Overhead prolegs with parameters of length, width and thickness - 32, by 4, by 2 centimeters.
  3. Crossbars under the seats in the amount of four pieces. Overall parameters are the same as for prolegs.
  4. Bars that will play the role of a seat. They also need four. The length is 35 centimeters, and the thickness is 2 centimeters. As for their width, 2 bars should be 6 centimeters each, and 2 more - 9 centimeters each.
  5. Bolts - 6 pcs. The length of the bolts should not exceed 4 centimeters, including the cap. The diameter should be 6 mm.
  6. Self-tapping screws 45-50 millimeters.

How to make a stool from prepared materials

When all the materials and tools are collected, you need to start making a chair.

  1. The very first thing that is required of you is the placement of the axle bolts. They are fixed on the legs of the chair, but by no means in the middle of each of them. This is an erroneous opinion about fixing the bolts exactly in the center. In this case, the stool will turn out to be high, and will not differ in stability characteristics. It is recommended to drill holes for the bolt closer to the top of the legs.
  2. When drilling a hole for the bolt, do not forget also that its head must be drowned in the hole. Anticipate this moment.
  3. Attach the crossbars under the seat to the upper ends of the legs of the stool with bolts. Please note that there are four crossbars, and two of them must be connected to the inner legs, and two more to the outer ones.
  4. In the case of correct assembly, you will get hinged parts in the amount of two pieces.
  5. These parts must be connected using wide seating bars. But do not forget to leave small overhangs from 1.5 to 2 centimeters.
  6. The fastening of the bars occurs in the following way: one of the bars is attached to the ends on the inner crossbars, and another one is attached to the two outer partitions.
  7. Now you need to install the prongs. They are installed at a distance of 10 cm from the bottom of the legs. After proper marking and installation, they should be fixed with pre-prepared screws.
  8. Moving on to the next step, you will need to secure the middle bars. This operation must be carried out slowly, having thought through and calculated all the points. All because it is a very painstaking work. The fact of how convenient and free your future stool will be assembled / disassembled will depend on the correct installation of the bars. The middle bars are located similarly wide and outer, one for the inner and outer crossbars.
  9. The height of the future stool will directly depend on the place where the internal bars will be connected. The ideal location for their attachment is 15-20 millimeters from the bars of a wide-type seat. If you follow this scheme for manufacturing the product, its height will be about 35-40 centimeters. Naturally, you can use other parameters, based on your own wishes.

Suitable materials and a small nuance

In the process of making a folding stool, in general, you can use almost any type of wood. But mainly pines or birches are recommended. By the way, a pine stool will have a very small weight, which is convenient for carrying it often, for use on fishing trips and to the country. True, such a pine stool tends to loosen quickly, and requires periodic tightening of the bolts that hold the structure together.

There is another interesting design refinement that will make an already convenient device even more convenient. You can attach a portable handle to the structure of a folding stool. Such a handle is fixed between the inner legs. If you initially take bolts not 4 centimeters each, but 6-7 each, a very convenient handle for carrying the product can be fixed between the inner legs.

Simple ordinary furniture in the house is always useful, even if you prefer more extravagant products. This is especially true of the suburban area, where you do not appear so often. Today we will talk about a wooden stool, the dignity of which and functionality can be discussed for quite some time. Most likely you once made the first model at labor lessons, however, since that time a lot of water has flowed under the bridge, so it is advisable to refresh everything in your memory.

In the photo - a simple wooden stool for the kitchen

In the article, as the process is described, professional advice will be given. So by the time the story ends, you will be quite savvy in theory and will know some of the secrets of the masters. It is even possible that making wooden stools will become your hobby. Why not - any models are always in demand by buyers.

Material

Any product consists of parts, so before work, you should take care of the blanks. You should purchase or find in the country for:

Tip: legs can be made not in a trapezoidal shape, especially when there is little experience in furniture business, but rectangular.

Tool

To work with your own hands, you should use a reliable and properly sharpened tool:

  • a metal ruler is suitable for measuring;
  • for marking - a metal square;
  • wood saw;
  • hammer;
  • chisel;
  • screwdriver;
  • sandpaper.

Sometimes this set is added:

  • glue;
  • additional fixture;
  • paint (varnish);
  • brushes.

The price of the specified set of materials is quite affordable for everyone.

Preparation

It begins with inventing the shape of a stool, while it should be noted that it should be as stable as possible. Therefore, we do not recommend taking into account elongated products, which can often be found near the bar ().

Tip: the height of the stool should not be more than 600 mm from the floor. The shape is as close to cubic as possible.

Ordinary standard models can be used in many ways - for relaxation, as a stand, from which you can carry out home repairs or harvest from trees in the garden.

The seat area should not be small, it is better when the range is from 350 to 500 mm. After defining the model, make a preliminary drawing of it, indicating all dimensions. This will allow you to determine the needs of the material.

Process

The proposed instruction will put everything on the shelves:

  1. Make a drawing, and you don’t need to try to create them, observing GOST. It will be quite enough to have a regular sketch with exactly the specified dimensions.

There are two separate elements to highlight:

  • drawers - necessary for fixing the legs of the stool and serve as the basis for the seat;
  • prolegs - allow you to ensure the rigidity and stability of the structure.

The video in this article will provide an opportunity to find additional information on the above topic.
