Puma - similar to the previous type of mechanism, this one unfolds according to the principle of raising and extending the seat of the sofa.

At the same time, a soft platform rises to the vacated space from below, creating a single place for sleeping and relaxing. Such models are advantageous for easy unfolding, but, as a rule, they do not have a box for bedding. In addition, the backs of such models are separate pillows, which, in the mode of a place to sleep, always have nowhere to put them. Most often, this type of mechanism is on corner sofas.
The accordion is perhaps the most versatile model. It unfolds according to the “accordion” principle by extending the seat, which drags along and unfolds the back folded in half.

The result is a spacious sleeping area. Whereas when folded it is very compact. But such an advantage also translates into a significant drawback: a lot of space is needed for an unfolded sofa, which will be fatal for a small room. In addition, such a mechanism requires considerable effort.
French folding bed - this option is hardly suitable for everyday use, but as an additional guest place it is quite suitable.

The back of this model is usually replaced by pillows, which are removed before transformation. After that, the seat sequentially unfolds into three sections (according to the clamshell principle), forming a roomy place to relax. This type of mechanism is not reliable. In addition, there are uncomfortable gaps between the unfolded sections that interfere with comfortable rest. In addition, there is no laundry box.
American clamshell - unlike the "French" counterpart, this type of mechanism is more reliable and will withstand frequent transformations. It unfolds a little differently.

After that, a sofa block is lifted from the body, which, in turn, is decomposed into two more sections, which are installed on the legs. All sections are made of durable metal, which significantly reduces the weight of the structure in comparison with standard elements of other types of sofas. However, this design makes it impossible for the sofa to store bedding below.
Roll-out - another type of mechanism, characterized by both simplicity and reliability.

At the heart of its transformation is a retractable front part, on which there is a pillow folded in half. This pillow unfolds and fits into the vacated space. A spacious, and most importantly, a sleeping place without seams is formed. However, the height from the floor of such a sofa may seem too small to someone.
Outdoor - perhaps the simplest and most economical type of sofa.

The folding part, consisting of two parts, when folded, fits completely into the body of the sofa, forming its seat. Whereas, when unfolding, it is placed on the floor without legs or supports. The design is simple and therefore reliable. But, of course, there can be no question of any box for linen.
Konrad - a model with a three-section mechanism. When assembled, this is a beautiful and stylish sofa, and when disassembled, it is a spacious place to sleep.

It is transformed by pulling out the seat, from which, in turn, the third section with the lifting part extends. As a result, a place to relax is not only large in area, but also high. The mechanism of this model, although reliable, is quite heavy. But there are boxes for storing bedding.
Dolphin - a similar type of transformation is most often found in corner sofas. The principle of its operation is the extension of the lower section of the long side, followed by lifting the pillow up with a soft handle.

As a rule, a corner sofa of this design has a backrest consisting of individual pillows. Pillows have to be removed when unfolding the bed. The mechanism is resistant to loads, but wears out rather quickly. In addition, a carpet laid on the floor will greatly complicate the extension of the section.
Kangaroo - the principle of operation of the mechanism is similar to the "dolphin", with the only difference being that in the unfolded state it is much higher above the floor.

However, this design loses its reliability. And, like models with the dolphin transformation type, this sofa does not have a long service life.
Recliner is the most modern and progressive kind of transformation mechanism. It allows you to adjust the position of the individual parts of the sofa - backrest, armrests, footrest, etc., thus creating the perfect place for relaxation.

On some more expensive models of such sofas, vibration massagers are installed, which are controlled using the control panel. In addition, the appearance of such sofas is the most solid and presentable. However, they also have significant drawbacks. A full bed on such a sofa is unlikely to work. And the cost of even the simplest models bites.

The choice, as we see, is huge. So a sofa with which transformation mechanism to prefer? The first thing to consider is the size of the family. For one person, a sofa with an “elf” mechanism or some kind of “book” will suffice. Singles who are not constrained in their means and who want to furnish, for example, a studio in a stylish and tasteful way, can spend money on a recliner sofa. If the family is very large, then the best option would be roomy sofas when folded - for example, corner ones. For a small family, sofas of any other types are suitable for spaciousness.

To save space, it is also worth focusing on models that, both folded and unfolded, do not take up much space. Also, preference can be given to models with a lifting mechanism for storing bedding - space for blankets, pillows and blankets will not be superfluous. This option is especially relevant for sofas with pillow backs. It is not worth dwelling on options with unreliable mechanisms. They won't live up to your expectations. Those who are accustomed to sleeping on a perfectly flat surface of the bed should also avoid folding sofas and other varieties in which irregularities form between the pillows over time.

Modular sofas- the most mobile and multifunctional type of furniture, their design consists of several parts that can be used both together and separately. However, when choosing a finished model, where the dimensions are laid down by the manufacturer, it must be borne in mind that there is no single standard - one manufacturer can offer a double sofa 1.5 meters long, and the other 1.8 m.

An important indicator of the size of upholstered furniture is the height of the back and landing. Sofas for hallways have a low back or are produced without it at all, models with a low back wall and seating are also often installed in halls and bedrooms. In places where it is planned to only sit on the sofa - in the kitchen or in the office space, such options are selected so that the seat height is not lower than a regular chair.

Some models may take up little space themselves, but when transformed, they require much more space. The choice of how to lay out the sofa is also influenced by the purpose of the furniture, the frequency of its use - not all types of mechanisms are designed for frequent use. It is necessary to take into account the estimated weight that will be on the furniture in the unfolded state. That's why all sofa models are divided into four main types according to the name of the transformation mechanism.

Withdrawable

The assembled design of the roll-out model consists of three separate elements - the rear part in the folded state is a back, and after transformation into a horizontal position it becomes a place for the head. The seats pushed forward and the lower part hidden in the structure are used as the main lying place.

Such models of upholstered furniture are also called - sofas with a telescopic transformation mechanism, because the layout is done from the inside, like a telescope, individual parts are put forward and fixed one after another. Roll-out versions are mainly installed in large rooms, since in the unfolded state the width of the furniture increases by more than three times.

The transformation of the roll-out structure is carried out in several stages.

First, you need to pull the rag handle located in the lower transverse part of the seat, and push the entire seat frame outward. Then you need to level the sleeping surface of the furniture by lowering the back wall down. In some models, additional side pillows are used for these purposes - when assembled, they play the role of a second soft back. The retractable mechanism on such models, as a rule, is based on a roller system, less often - special springs are built into the design, which recline the seats after the lower part is extended.

Sliding

When assembled, sliding models are very elegant and compact, and when unfolded, they resemble a folding bed. After the transformation, the front part is installed on special folding supports, the backrest is lowered, and the assembled bed becomes three separate sections. There are several main types of sliding products.

"French" folding bed- the classic version of sliding upholstered furniture. When assembled, it takes up little space, but when laid out, the front part moves forward by one and a half to two meters, depending on the specific model. The "French" mechanism is not recommended for frequent use - a sofa can only occasionally serve as a sleeping place, but basically such models are designed more for sitting.

"American" folding bed. By its design, it is similar to the previous model - the beds are formed from three sections, which are put forward in turn and installed on special supports. The main difference is that the "American" version uses a more reliable and durable mechanism - the furniture is designed for frequent use. However, the cost of such sofas is much higher.

"Italian" folding bed. Unlike previous varieties, the “Italian” folding bed is transformed not by lifting the transverse beam of the seats, but by pushing the back wall of the sofa forward. Then the sliding mechanism is also activated, and the surface is installed on the support legs. Compared to the "American" and "French" counterparts, furniture with an "Italian" type of mechanism is equipped with more durable legs.

The most common modifications include accordion mechanism. The principle of its operation is that, moving forward, the berths seem to be stretched with the help of special springs. Metal spring elements, fixed on both sides of the structure, also help to fold the sofa - they tighten the sections inward, setting each in its place. The transformation of these models requires minimal effort - you just need to slightly raise the lower beam of the seats and push it forward.

Just like the clamshell models, the "Accordion" has a very compact size when assembled, it is conveniently installed in small rooms. Another important plus is the presence of a cabinet for linen, located in the back wall of the furniture. Sliding mechanisms "Accordion" are equipped with reliable working elements, have a long service life, withstand considerable weight, are easy to transform, but they also have a drawback - when expanding, the supports slide along the floor and can damage the coating.

lifting

Upholstered furniture with a lifting mechanism consists of two identical parts and involves only two positions - a sitting sofa and a sleeping surface. Horizontal transformation is performed by lifting the seats and folding the backrest back. It is laid on a wooden frame, and the seat beam is lowered into place, in the raised state, the rear wall is fixed with special locking mechanisms.

Before installation, it must be taken into account that between the sofa and the wall, 10-15 cm of empty space will be required for the backrest when it is in the lowered position.

Swivel

Sofas with a swivel mechanism are one of the first to appear on the upholstered furniture market, they are compact and very easy to use, so they always remain relevant. The design involves a minimum of elements, there are no fragile parts, rollers. An important plus is the presence of a box for linen. Of the minuses - there should be a distance of 10-15 cm between the sofa and the wall, which is necessary when unfolding - the seats rise, and the back wall leans back, forming a place for the head.

Thanks to the stoppers, the backrest can be deployed, fixed in the middle position, which is why the models are called swivel.
