DIY case for a sapper shovel, diagram. "mitten" for a shovel

SprinterBRN 18-05-2011 17:39

I found a cotton tarpaulin. “Dressed” the spatula.
To prevent the slot from spreading and to strengthen the bottom, pieces of “belt” from the same tarpaulin are sewn on.

SprinterBRN 18-05-2011 17:44

I couldn’t find any fasteners in the house, so I decided to make them using Velcro.
A “strap” is sewn on for half of the Velcro.

SprinterBRN 18-05-2011 17:50

Assembled.
The clasp strap is sewn in the center to cover the sharpened edge. Therefore, when hanging on hinges, the cover opens slightly opposite the hinges. Maybe later I’ll install buttons in the corners so that the case does not open.

Yes, the cover is also excellent. Where do you get this material?

SprinterBRN 18-05-2011 20:13

Yes, in fact, everything was done by eye, I measured it directly on the shoulder blade and left a little tolerance for the seams. The cover is sewn from one piece, with a hole for the handle lined in the middle of the piece. In the first photo the entire case is visible.

SprinterBRN 18-05-2011 20:30

I bought the tarpaulin from a company that sews awnings (I put eyelets in the trunk there, and noticed the exhibition stand with images of the fabric). I haven't found it anywhere else yet. The fabric is specific - it is 90 centimeters wide and smells strongly of cotton while it is “fresh”.

Claude 18-05-2011 20:49

Is it possible, instead of a strap-clasp, to make a flap that bends across the entire width of the case? Or will it be inconvenient? Why did you make the strap?

SprinterBRN 18-05-2011 21:01

I thought about the valve, but came up with it and made it with a strap. It’s easier this way - you don’t have to process the side edges of the valve. In addition, just two covers were included in the 90 centimeters of width. The second is of a different design - I put it on top, I’m waiting until I find a strap to attach the shovel to it.

Claude 18-05-2011 21:10

Which one is better in your opinion - a spatula on top or a paddle on the bottom in the case? I’ve seen this and that, which is better? More practical? Won’t a sharpened spatula cut through the cover? Some are very sharp.

SprinterBRN 19-05-2011 08:39

It seems to me that the military cases with one leather strap, from which the shovel is pulled down, were made in order to, if necessary, dig in under enemy fire, without having to pull the shovel up through the entire equipment. I unfastened the strap, the shovel was freed and easily came out to where it was already facing from the case. If you didn’t keep track and lost your shovel, dig with your bayonet and your hands.
Personally, I like the case “with a hole” better.
If you plan to sharpen the shovel like a knife, you can make a leather insert. But this rough tarpaulin itself is quite strong.

Thank you, I wanted to do it again!

Claude 19-05-2011 11:24

Thank you! Or maybe it could be double-designed - pull it up and down (fantasy!).

IMHO it’s better to cover the entire LENGTH of the case and pull it out to the side. Place 4-5 cutting rivets along the RK line, as they do on ax covers.
If you carry it in a car, then it’s more convenient for me to simply use a piece of rubber U-shaped profile that fits on the RK. Contrary to expectations, it does not fly off, and, if necessary, can be removed with considerable effort.

Claude 23-05-2011 12:11

I didn’t like it to the side - I saw it, it was uncomfortable (for me).

Yeah, on the left unloading strap, in front, instead of a knife.

Claude 23-05-2011 15:17

No, behind the back, two.

Smokes, smokes, relaxes. MSL is a special forces weapon!!!

I think it would be more technologically advanced to use two fasteners, which are one part with the loops

SprinterBRN 31-05-2011 16:47

In general, this is true, but the safety of the trunk upholstery was more critical to me. The next version will probably have a solid valve with wide Velcro.

I tried different versions of the cover.
Covers with removal from above - leather of the royal type, canvas of different types with different fasteners (buttons, buckles of different types) are not very convenient, as already said - the shovel must be pulled upward through the entire equipment.
Semi-covers for pentagonal shovels are a one-time thing, the entire weight of the shovel is held on one button, the shovel is easy to lose.
Semi-covers for quadrangular shovels are a little more convenient - in them the shovel is pulled out from the side.
In general, a case with removal from the bottom is the most convenient. In my opinion, the best option for a shovel case is a unified grenade bag.

The days of treasure hunters are back. “Black” and “green” search engines look for artifacts from past eras, devoting all their free time to this activity. All in the hope of finding a treasure trove of coins or a cache of weapons. You can't judge - times are difficult. It is better, if possible, to help.

One of the main tools of searchers is shovels from the Finnish company Fiskars with very sharp blades that are difficult to dull.

When transporting them with an open blade, you can injure yourself or fellow travelers, especially in public transport. Wrapping it in rags is also not a solution, and it’s not aesthetically pleasing either.

I propose to make and put on the shovel blade a simple cover made of leatherette (or better yet, from genuine leather, it is stronger, can withstand cuts, or from pieces).

1 – front part; 2 – back part; 3 – fluffy Velcro (2 pcs.); 4 – seams; 5 – burdock Velcro fastener (2 pcs.)

The pattern of the cover is created simply - trace the outline of the shovel on paper, add seam allowances to it and cut it out with scissors.

It is better to sew on a sewing machine for thick materials or, if possible, contact a tent or shoe workshop.

First, on the back of the case, sew the fastener ears around the perimeter.

Then sew Velcro fasteners to the front and back parts of the cover according to the drawing: on the “ears” - fluffy parts, on the front - burdock.

Finally, sew both halves together. Now the case is ready. All that remains is to put the blade of the shovel into it and fasten the ears.

Reliable and convenient! Tested in practice.

Other material options are teza, tarpaulin.

An additional option for the product is to use the case as a belt bag for finds if necessary.

I'm a quitter!
I am ballast for us!
But suddenly the counselor said,
What shovels for everyone
He will distribute
But he won’t give me a shovel.

This is how someone else will love work,
When the shovel is taken away.

Agniya Barto

I have a shovel, it's called Bison.
A little bigger and worse than the MPL, the steel rings, bought two years ago at a flea market for 180 rubles.
I soaked the handle with flaxseed, screwed in a new self-tapping screw, and sharpened it.
I used it periodically, I seem to be happy with everything...

But not everyone is happy.
What did I carry the shovel in? Delov: he wrapped it in a rag and even in a backpack. But it began to seem to me that this was somehow uncivilized, like disrespect for such a useful tool as a shovel. And as I thought about this while preparing the shovel for the next season, my hands began to itch.

This is the result of this scabies that I will demonstrate right now.

Materials:

1. The same thick tarpaulin, with stains
2.Nylon sling of different widths and thicknesses
3. Fastex clasp
4. Glue “Moment-1”
5.Nylon threads

Work order:

1. First I made a model from an unnecessary rag, sewed it, tried it on, corrected the mistakes
2.I cut out a blank for the case based on the layout and cut a hole for the handle
3. I glued and sewed on pieces of thick, wide sling to reinforce particularly stressed areas
4.Sewed loops for hanging on the belt
5.Sewed the cover from the inside out, turned it right side out
6.Sewed fastex

Impressions from the product:

It was made roughly and clumsily, like all my homemade products, but it was durable. I decided not to give a damn about the rust stains that cannot be washed off, not about the exhibition, especially since the stains do not affect the functionality. The shovel is a bit too big to carry on a belt, but tolerable. The shovel is held securely in the case and does not dangle. Now it’s convenient to carry it in a backpack, and there’s no shame in taking it out, and if you need it, you can hang it on your belt. Spade liked the case.

Perhaps my experience will be useful to someone.

And now the photo:

Thank you for attention.
I will be happy to answer your questions.

Today we will tell you how to make a leather case for a small sapper shovel with your own hands.

Welcome again! I bring to your attention my replica for the MSL (small sapper blade). Of course, there are no drawings; everything was done on the spot. The material was thick saddle leather. Once they gave me a broken old saddle, so I dismantled it, including this cover. The goal was to increase the strength of the case without significantly increasing its weight.

My MSL has an entire edge, so any other cover would cut through pretty quickly. Be it a tarpaulin, as in the army original, or any other. The skin is much more resistant to this kind of influence, which determined its choice.

Now the weight. I didn’t have rivets or similar things, so I had to use M6 hexagons and nuts. Bolts with countersunk heads - they fit perfectly into the thick leather when tightened. The nuts on the reverse side are sharpened as much as possible so as not to cling to anything. Well, it reduces weight...

In addition, the front part is made of two pieces, and not solid. It's comfortable to wear, although I rarely wear it on my belt.

If the dirty side is put away in the case, then the dirty side is on the outside.

It fully meets my needs and objectives. In general, you can see the result in the photo.)
