Creating a foundation from asbestos pipes

It is easy to find out about the depth of soil freezing in a particular region from reference tables (they are abundantly available on the Internet). Note! Such signs always indicate the amount of freezing of bare soil - without taking into account snow cover. In areas where a lot of snow falls, the depth values ​​recommended by the reference book can be reduced by 5–10 cm.

Second point. You should add about 40 cm to the depth indicated in the reference table. The resulting value will tell you the exact length of the underground part of the asbestos-cement products. And the pipes should protrude about 30 cm above the ground. If the floods in your area are quite serious, you can “stick out” the piles higher above the ground.

Support pillars must be placed under the central part of the building, along its perimeter and at all angles. It is important to install enough piles so that the load from the building is distributed evenly across them. In this case, the load on one support should be a maximum of 800 kg.

Prepare the site for the construction of the foundation:

  1. You clear the ground and remove the turf from the area where the foundation will be built, then cut off the fertile part of the soil.

Important! The depth of the pits is taken to be approximately 0.2 m greater than the calculated length of the part of the supports located underground. This is done so that you can equip a sand cushion in each well.

Do-it-yourself columnar foundation - a guide to action

In the prepared pits we make special pillows from. The thickness of the finished sand layer should be 0.2 m. Pour the sand, tamp it, water it with ordinary water, and compact it again. Then place a piece of roofing material on the made layer and perform the following operations:

  1. Install asbestos cement pipes into the pits. Level them and fix them. Temporary fastening of the supports can be done using small wooden beams.
  2. If groundwater flows close to the surface in the area, asbestos pipes should be waterproofed with bitumen mastic. Fill the pipe products with it to the soil level and wait until the composition dries.
  3. Drive reinforcing bars around the pipes. Their length is taken in relation to the length of pipe products by 20 percent more. Be sure to maintain a distance of about 70 mm between adjacent rods.
  4. Prepare the concrete solution. Mix 2 parts sand with one part cement M 400, add water to this composition. Stir the resulting composition until it becomes a liquid dough. Add water as needed.
  5. Pour gravel (2 parts) into the mixture and mix it vigorously.
  6. Pour concrete to a height of 0.4–0.5 m around the pipe product and directly into its center.
  7. Raise the pipe 0.2 m and wait for the concrete mixture to harden. The support is raised in order to give the foundation additional resistance to pushing out piles during soil heaving.

High-quality hardening of concrete occurs in 8–14 days. After this, you can safely mount supporting elements on a self-made columnar foundation to install the planned structure on them.

Let's give an example: there is a frame house with wall dimensions of 6x7 m, a height of the first floor of 2.8 m, and a pediment of 2.6 m.

The specific gravity of the frame walls is γ c = 50 kg/m2.
The specific weight of a roof made of sheet steel is γ k = 30 kg/m2.
The specific weight of interfloor ceilings is γ p = 100 kg/m 2.

The load of interfloor ceilings during operation is γ np = 210 kg/m 2.

The soil on which the house will be built is loam (R 0 - 3.5 kg/cm2), which has a freezing depth of 1.2 m.

Calculation of the number of pipes

To calculate the required number and size of pipes for the foundation, several steps are performed:

Total mass of pillars: 600 × 14 = 8400 kg.

Total weight of the house

To do this, all the obtained values ​​​​are summed up (walls, floors, roofs, foundations) and the final number is 40390 kg.

  • The minimum total area of ​​the bases is calculated using the formula given at the beginning of the section: S = 1.3 × 40390/3.5 = 11540 cm 2.
  • When calculating the base area of ​​1 column, the number 1250 cm 2 is calculated. (S = pr 2 = 3.14 × 0.2 2) The total number of columns is calculated: 11540/1250 = 10 pieces.

It follows from this that as the diameter of the pillars increases, their number can be reduced and vice versa.

Only after this calculation can you begin purchasing materials and installing the foundation.

Preparation for arrangement

Preparing the area for the construction of the foundation consists of preparing places for installing piles. To do this, the land plot is cleared of weeds and vegetation. After this, pegs are placed in the places where the pipes are installed, and a rope is stretched between them. It is necessary to accurately measure the location of the foundation.

After preparation, the main work on the device begins:

  • frame installation;
  • filling.

Wells are drilled in places where pegs are installed.

Pipe installation is done as follows: a pipe is inserted into the prepared well, filled with concrete (⅓ part) and raised by 15 cm. It is necessary to constantly check the installed pipes for level. They must be installed perfectly level.

Next stage - frame installation. To do this, fittings are inserted into the pipe. Its rods should protrude 10 cm above the pipe. After that is poured the remaining concrete into the pipe. The space between the outer walls of the pipe and the inner walls of the well is filled with gravel and compacted.

Pole tying(or the formation of a grillage) is necessary in order to evenly distribute the load on the posts. In addition, the grillage is a support for future walls. Therefore, this design must be performed efficiently, following the instructions:

  • Make formwork from boards on the pipes.
  • Pour sand into the bottom of the formwork.
  • Install the fittings on the sand, connecting them to the fittings that come out of the pipes.

  • After the concrete has hardened, remove the formwork.

You can close the hole at the top with a special plug, which is offered by manufacturers of asbestos pipes; in a cheaper option, you can put a plastic bottle on the pipe or wrap it in a plastic bag.

For complete security, so that water does not get into the pipe and from below, strong polyethylene can also be attached to the lower part of the pipe.

2) To secure on the asbestos pipe there are logs (crossed, veins) of the fence, you can use clamps and wire. And also with ordinary wood screws. This option may be stronger than the previous ones.

For fastening with screws, a wooden plug (a piece of wooden post that freely passes inside the asbestos pipe) is lowered into the pipe. Next, through pre-made holes in the pipe, screws are screwed into these wooden plugs.

3) When installing a fence In order not to completely fill the asbestos-cement pipe with concrete, you can fill it only to ground level, then fill it with sand. And on top again with concrete, but in a much thinner layer.

4) There are direct asbestos-cement pipes and pipes with sockets. The latter are more convenient to use as fence supports. They will be more stable compared to straight ones.

5) The most popular for a summer resident or private developer, the size of asbestos pipes is 3950 mm long and 100 mm in diameter. This is the inner diameter. The wall thickness of such a pipe is 9 mm, i.e. the diameter along the outer wall of the pipe is 118 mm. Another common diameter is the asbestos-cement pipe 150 - however, the dimensions of its internal and external diameters are not one hundred and fifty, but 141 and 161 mm, respectively, and the wall thickness is 10 millimeters.

The length of the pipes is either 395 cm or 500 cm. When installing a fence with supports made of asbestos pipes, it may be more profitable to buy pipes 5 meters long. And then cut them in half. You can cut asbestos pipes with a grinder with a diamond blade (the same as when cutting concrete).

6) Asbestos-cement pipes are used for chimneys. However, you need to keep in mind that at high temperatures (above three hundred degrees) asbestos cement behaves in the same way as slate. Have you heard slate exploding in fire? An asbestos-cement pipe used as a chimney can burst in much the same way. In other words, it is unsafe to use asbestos cement pipes for chimneys.

7) Asbestos-cement pipes come in two types- ordinary, non-pressure (designated - BNT) and - pressure (designated VT). Pressure ones are stronger and have a thicker wall. As a result, they are heavier and approximately one and a half times more expensive than non-pressure ones. By the way, it is better to use pressure pipes when constructing a columnar foundation. But even in this case, the pipe can support the foundation not by itself, but when it is filled with concrete and the presence of iron reinforcement.

8) Asbestos-cement pipes are cheaper than iron pipes. So, a linear meter of iron pipe, which is also used to support fences, will cost 140-160 rubles, i.e. a pipe 3 meters long, for a two-meter fence, will cost 420 - 580 rubles. A four-meter asbestos-cement pipe will cost about 340-380 rubles. One meter will still remain. However, it must be taken into account that installing asbestos cement pipes is more expensive and more difficult.

  • Fill the inner surface of the pipe and some parts around it with concrete mortar.
  • Secure the supports with metal rods.

In the first case, before pouring, fittings are placed in the pipe, which is selected to be approximately half a meter longer than the pipe itself. The reinforcement should be placed 25 centimeters into the soil, and protrude at this distance above the pipe. Then all the pipes inside are filled with concrete. After the concrete has dried, further work can begin.

In the second option, the pipe is initially filled to only a third part. Then it is immediately raised a short distance from the bottom of the well so that part of the concrete solution pours out, forming some expansion at the bottom. After this, the entire pipe is filled with the solution to the very top. In this case, the reinforcement does not protrude at the top; instead, a special metal pin is installed, which protrudes above the surface of the support by about 30 centimeters. It is to this pin that the rest of the structure, in particular the grillage, will be attached.

When constructing such a foundation, special attention should be paid to reinforcement. It must first be treated with a special solution that protects against corrosion. This will allow you to maintain the strength, stability and stability of the building’s foundation for a long time.

Add 0.3-0.4 meters to the soil freezing depth, plus the height of the pipe above the ground - this will be the design length of the supports in order to build a foundation from asbestos-cement pipes with your own hands.

Using reference material and SNiPs, you can determine the total weight of all structures and equipment of the future home. The number of supports is determined according to their placement along the entire perimeter of the building, in its corners and at the intersection of load-bearing structures. The piles are installed at a distance of no more than one meter from each other.

For small buildings, a columnar foundation is laid from asbestos pipes with a diameter of 120 mm. You can use supports of a smaller diameter, but then you will need to increase their number.

The amount of concrete required for pouring pipes is determined based on the following consumption rates for one column 10 meters long:

  • Diameter 10 cm – 0.1 m3;
  • Diameter 20 cm – 0.5 m3;
  • Diameter 30 cm – 1 m3.

Installation of asbestos supports

When sawing asbestos pipes, a reserve length is added to the calculated size for losses when leveling the ground height of the supports.


The pipe is fixed into a well, the bottom of which is previously filled with concrete mortar.

Marking points for installing poles is done using twine and wooden pegs. The centers of the supports are placed in increments of no more than 1 meter. As a rule, a building under construction has a rectangular plan. Therefore, the correctness of the marking is confirmed by the equality of the lengths of the diagonals between the opposite corners of the pile field.

According to the established markings, holes of the designed depth are drilled into the ground using a drill. The diameter of the drill must exceed the transverse dimension of the pipe by at least 50 mm.

The bottom of the well is filled with concrete mortar with a height of 200-300 mm. To achieve a widening of the base of the pillar, the concrete is vigorously compacted. A dense layer of fill squeezes the soil to the sides, thereby forming a wide base. Foundation pillars made of asbestos-cement pipes are placed in the drilled wells. Asbestos supports in pits are fixed at the top with wooden spacers made of timber.

When installing asbestos-cement pipes, you must carefully monitor the strict vertical position of the supports.

Reinforcement of columnar supports

After installing the pile on the concrete pad, the internal cavity of the pipe is reinforced. 2-3 pieces of periodic profile reinforcement with a diameter of 12 mm are inserted inside each support. The vertical rods are tied together with smooth wire, creating a box-like structure.

The length of the vertical reinforcing bars should be such that their lower ends fit tightly into the base pad of the pit, and the upper parts protrude from the pile.

The protruding length of the reinforcing bars must be sufficient to connect the pile foundation to the grillage. Thus, the foundation of asbestos-cement pipes forms a rigid supporting structure with sufficient load-bearing capacity.

Concreting of asbestos cement pipes

Concrete for pouring piles is prepared from a mixture of cement, sand, and fine gravel in the following proportion: 1:2:2. The dry mixture is diluted with water until a homogeneous dough-like solution is obtained.

If a columnar foundation is erected without widening the lower part of the base, then when pouring the first layer of mortar, the pipe is raised upward by 100-150 mm. The pile is left in this position until the concrete mixture hardens. Then proceed to reinforcement and complete concreting of the internal cavity of the support.

Each layer of concrete is thoroughly compacted. Due to the narrow cross-section of the asbestos support, pieces of smooth reinforcement or similar rods are used to compact the layers of fill.

The poured layer of mortar is compacted by the vertical forces of the reinforcement bar. Tamping the solution is considered complete when cement laitance appears on its surface.

I fill the gaps around the supports with sand. The sand is poured layer by layer with water and compacted. A columnar foundation made of asbestos pipes, after pouring it with a concrete mixture, is left alone for three to four weeks. During this period, the foundation will acquire sufficient load-bearing capacity to continue further construction.

Economic feasibility of a foundation made of asbestos pipes

Practice shows that constructing a house foundation from asbestos-cement piles can reduce the cost of building the foundation by 30% to 40%. With all the economic advantages, you need to remember that a columnar foundation made of asbestos-cement pipes is not designed for heavy loads from heavy structures.
