Bon appetit!

Autumn, winter and even early spring often cause us trouble in the form of cold and dank dampness. This is felt especially acutely on cloudy days, poor in sunlight. You can warm up at such a time in different ways: coffee, tea, even alcoholic drinks if necessary. But we invite you to master the art of preparing a great drink - non-alcoholic mulled wine. We hope that from all the variety of recipes you will find an option to your liking.

What is mulled wine

It turns out that this drink has been known since ancient times and came to us from the valleys of Central Europe, rich in vineyards. Mulled wine is based on hot wine, from which the name comes (the German “glühender Wein” literally translates as “flaming wine”). The special taste and aroma of mulled wine is achieved using various natural additives.

Non-alcoholic mulled wine is not only tasty, but also an incredibly healthy drink.

Traditionally, red grape wine is used for mulled wine. When heated, it has a beneficial effect on the body, its overall tone, and copes well with the treatment and prevention of colds. And various additives not only make the drink even tastier, but can also enhance its beneficial properties.

But alcohol, even in small doses, is prohibited for some people (children, pregnant women). It’s good that there are many recipes for non-alcoholic mulled wine. Its taste is no different from the traditional one, despite the fact that it does not contain red wine.

Ingredients and cooking details

To prepare non-alcoholic mulled wine, the following juices are usually used instead of wine:

  • grape;
  • apple (often mixed with currant);
  • pomegranate;
  • cherry;
  • cranberry.

Hibiscus, an infusion of Sudanese rose flowers, is often used as a base for mulled wine.

In addition, pieces of various fruits and, most importantly, spicy spices are added to the drink. This is how the predecessor of mulled wine was prepared in the Ancient Roman Empire. In those days, seasonings and spices were rare and very expensive, so only wealthy people could afford warm, spicy wine.

Honey, cloves, vanilla, anise, cinnamon, cardamom, star anise, nutmeg - this is an incomplete list of what will help you make mulled wine even tastier and more aromatic.

A mixture of spicy spices - the soul of non-alcoholic mulled wine

To prepare this drink correctly and not lose all its excellent qualities, you need to follow some rules. Believe me, they were not pulled out of thin air, but identified and polished by centuries of experience, supported by theory and approved by practice.

  1. Do not use aluminum containers to prepare mulled wine. The drink will greatly lose both in taste and quality.
  2. Heat the ingredients over very low heat. The temperature should be uniform. The drink can be considered spoiled if it begins to boil and bubble.
  3. The temperature of mulled wine during cooking should not exceed 70 degrees, that is, you cannot bring the drink to a boil! Carefully monitor the surface of the liquid: first, foam will appear on it due to heating, and as soon as it begins to disappear, remove the container with mulled wine from the heat.
  4. Use only fresh fruit to add to mulled wine.
  5. It is not advisable to put finely ground spices into mulled wine. They will dissolve well, which will cause difficulties when filtering the drink; in addition, the taste may become oversaturated. It’s better to add a whole cinnamon stick, a clove bud, an anise seed, and so on.

Note! Using different fruits and spices lets your imagination run wild. You are not at all obliged to strictly adhere to the recipe and the number of products in it: by changing the composition, adding something new, you can create mulled wine with a unique, exclusive taste.

It is recommended to prepare mulled wine at home in two stages. First, water is poured into the bowl, ¼ of the total amount of juice used. Then add all the spices and additives to the water, bring to a boil, cook for a couple of minutes and remove from the heat. The next step is adding honey or sugar until completely dissolved and pouring in the juice.

This method fully reveals the aroma of spices and fruits, allows you to completely dissolve the sugar and prevent the drink from overheating. The simplified method will take less time, but will require special attention from you.

  2. Heat the mulled wine, stirring constantly. Do not forget that boiling should not be allowed under any circumstances. 10 minutes are enough for the liquid to heat up to the desired temperature. Remove the pan from the stove, cover, wrap with a towel and leave for another 5-10 minutes.
