Wattle fence. How to make wattle in the country with your own hands: a master class

If you are tired of the usual chain-link mesh that serves as a fence for your land, put a little imagination, diligence and ... make an original wicker fence. To master the basic principles of its creation, it will not take so much time, because the main "problem" that usually baffles those who are thinking about how to make a wicker fence is finding the material for its manufacture.

What is a wicker fence made of?

A wicker fence should be created from flexible branches (for example, from hazel or willow). They should be cut in late autumn, when the leaves of the trees have already been shed, but the movement of juice in them has not yet stopped. “Hunting” should go out with a pre-prepared “measurement” (a branch that has the length you need can act as its role), and cut only those branches that fit you in size.

In addition to flexible branches for a wicker fence, you will also need thicker branches, but also necessarily straight ones, which will serve as supports in the fence. The thickness of the support branches should not be less than 4 centimeters, and the length should be equal to the height of the fence plus 50-55 centimeters (it is at this depth that you will hammer them into the ground).

Types of weaving

Since there are several ways to make a wicker fence, it is worth talking about them in more detail:

  1. Vertical weaving - for such a fence, the supports should be fixed both vertically (pillars) and horizontally (the basis for weaving the fence). With this type of weaving, the length of the bent branches should be only 15-20 centimeters more than the final height of the fence.
  2. Horizontal weaving is a weaving method more familiar to us, in which long flexible branches (at least 2 meters long) are laid horizontally between vertical supports. In this case, the step of the supports should not be less than 30 centimeters (otherwise it will be difficult for you to bend the branches).
  3. Inclined weaving is another option for creating a wicker fence, in which some branches are braided diagonally between often located supports:

Create a fence

The creation of a wicker fence, regardless of the type of weaving used, should begin with the installation of supports. It is customary not to bury branches that serve this purpose, but to hammer them to a depth of at least 50 centimeters (otherwise the fence may tip over under gusts of wind). When driving support branches, do not forget to check their verticality, otherwise the fence will turn out to be crooked and ugly.

The next stage is the weaving of the fence itself. Since the branches are not connected to the supports, if you don’t get a beautiful result on the first try, you can disassemble it and try again. The fences look original, in which the branches are staggered not one, but two or three.

You can join branches along the length in one of two ways:

  1. By breaking the entire fence into "sections", that is, you will make a clear border separating all the branches (from the bottom to the top of the fence) on the left and right. Such a border should fall on the gap between the branches-supports of the fence.
  2. Complementing each completed branch with another, without focusing on this point. With this method of weaving, it is better to fasten the branches at the junction with thin wire to create the illusion of an “endless” line.

All joints should not be located in one place, but should be evenly distributed along the entire length of the fence.

Pros and cons of a wicker fence

Choosing for themselves the option with a wicker fence, as its undoubted advantages, they note:

  • environmental friendliness - only natural materials are used,
  • originality and uniqueness
  • the ability to give the fence a curvilinear shape,
  • ease of assembly
  • no need to concrete the supports or pour the strip foundation under the fence,
  • its height depends only on the desire of its creator.

But the wicker fence made of branches also has disadvantages:

  • it's not very durable
  • combustible,
  • support branches will rot in the ground in 3-4 years,
  • suitable only for land plots decorated in a rustic style.

Alternatively, instead of a wicker fence made of branches, you can install its plastic imitation on your site.

Such a PVC fence, having the appearance of an ordinary wicker fence made of branches:

  • firstly, it will last much longer than its natural counterpart;
  • secondly, it can be disassembled and rearranged to another place;
  • thirdly, it has an even top and side frame, which gives it a more presentable look than a simple wicker fence.

A photo

Even in the recent past, wicker fences were the main way to protect a private area. The availability of consumables and its light structure made it possible to build such a structure without serious financial investments. Wicker fence has not lost its relevance today. Emphasized archaism and natural material organically fit into the countryside landscape. The advantage is the ability to make wattle with your own hands.

Wicker fence features

A traditional wattle fence is a lightweight fence made from flexible branches or shoots. A characteristic feature of such a fence is a chaotic, handicraft structure, that is, the material is used in a “natural” form, and is practically not processed. Wicker fences are decorative structures, as they rarely exceed 1.5 in height. High wattle fences are still found, but this solution does not justify its existence, since the dimensions do not compensate for the fragility of the material, and the gaps will not allow you to hide the area from prying eyes.

It is customary to enclose relatively small private properties with a wattle fence, or use them as additional fences inside and outside the site, for example, to enclose flower beds, a vegetable garden, etc. It is also ideal for delimiting a zone between neighboring plots, since a low structure will not greatly obscure the adjacent territory.

Preparatory work

To obtain a positive result, it is very important to qualitatively prepare everything for further work. Wattle making is no exception.

Material selection and calculation

Traditionally, willow (willow), hazel and willow are used to form wicker fences. These long, straight and naturally flexible branches with a minimum number of transverse processes are ideal for such fences. This material is also symmetrical, which is a definite advantage. In some cases, weaving from wild reeds is practiced. Smooth and long stems bend perfectly, but such a fence will be very fragile. Bamboo wattle will be more durable, but in this case the material will have to be purchased.

The calculation of the required amount of vines is carried out "by eye". On average, one bunch of rods is enough to form a fence with a height and length of 0.5 m. The value may deviate up or down, depending on the diameter of the rods and the density of weaving.

Note! You can weave tyn from young shoots of any trees and shrubs, but on condition that the branches are at least 1 m long. However, it should be borne in mind that when choosing this material, weaving will be chaotic, and the process itself will be more troublesome.

Large, even branches with a diameter of 4 cm or more are used as support pillars. The use of round timber, boards or metal rods is also appropriate, since this will extend the life of the structure, but they will stand out strongly against the general background, and the wattle will lose its naturalness.

On average, the step between the bearing crossbars is from 0.5 to 0.3 m, on the basis of which the required amount of material is calculated. The more often the supports are located, the denser the weaving will be, and accordingly the structure will be stronger. With vertical weaving, you will also need longitudinal crossbars, at least five for the entire height of the fence.

Procurement of material

Wattle rods are harvested in early spring or autumn. During this period, the movement of sap is minimal, and the tree is not burdened with excess foliage. The most even and long shoots are selected. If the manufacture of the fence will not be carried out immediately after harvesting, the branches must be dried well. For standard weaving, rods with a diameter of about 1 cm are selected. Branches of a larger diameter strengthen the structure, but at the same time make the structure less dense.

Immediately before weaving, the shoots are soaked in a container of water to make them more flexible and remove the bark. On average, this stage lasts about a week, for freshly cut branches, the period can be reduced to several days. After the material becomes flexible, and the bark begins to be easily removed, you can start processing. Ideally, a bark is used to remove the bark - a split branch of medium thickness with a limiter. Under normal conditions, you can use wire cutters or pliers. The tip of the rod is inserted between the clamps of the wire cutters or pincers, pulled out towards itself. If the branch is well soaked, then the bark should be removed with little or no effort.

Fully cleaned rods can be coated with antiseptic and stain to increase durability or change color. This operation is only appropriate if a small fence is being erected, since each branch must be processed separately. The lower part of the supporting stakes is impregnated with antiseptics and moisture-proof compounds to protect them from decay.

Tools

In addition to preparing the material, you need to take care of the availability of all the necessary tools:

  • secateurs;
  • hacksaws for metal;
  • roulettes;
  • wooden hammer;
  • a large hammer or sledgehammer;
  • wires;
  • construction thread or fishing line;
  • screwdriver.

How to make a wicker wooden fence from branches with your own hands

Horizontal weaving is traditional, as it forms a dense and durable fence. The vertical arrangement of the branches will not provide the necessary density. Wattle installation is carried out in the following order:

  1. Marking is in progress. A thread or fishing line is pulled along the line of the future fence. According to the established landmark, marks for supports are placed. The distance between the bearing stakes with horizontal weaving can be from 0.3 to 0.5 m. Poles with a vertical arrangement of branches can be driven in every meter.
  2. Bearing supports for the fence are driven in to a depth of at least 0.5. With a horizontal arrangement of the vines, two racks are located at the beginning and at the end of the fence so that the rod can be wrapped between them, thereby fixing it.
  3. If a horizontal wattle fence is being assembled, the tops of the support posts are fixed with a rail so that they are not "led" during the creation process. With a vertical arrangement of branches, transverse crossbars are installed. To fasten them, you can use nails or screws.
  4. Rods are woven between the pillars. Work begins with a thicker end. Weaving is carried out according to the figure-eight principle - the first pillar is bypassed in front, the second behind, the third again in front, etc. The lower rods are attached to the supporting stakes by means of wire. This will keep the wattle fence from slipping to the ground.
  5. The excess is cut off. If the rod ends, for example, on the fifth pillar, then weaving continues from the fourth. This is necessary in order for the fence to be uniform. You also need to periodically direct the rods in the other direction, changing the course of weaving. The protruding tips of the branches can be fixed with wire.
  6. Before installing the last row of rods, the fixing bar is removed. The top row is also tied with wire to the supporting stakes.

The recessed part of the supports is the weakest point of the wattle fence, since it quickly rots and collapses due to the influence of ground moisture. Therefore, it is recommended to install stakes in plastic pipes of a suitable diameter previously hammered into the ground. This will increase the life of the fence several times.

Vertical weaving is carried out according to a similar principle, with the difference that each rod is recommended to be fixed both from above and from below so that the structure does not stagger.

Caring for the finished tyn

On average, the service life of the fence does not exceed 5-7 years. After this period, the fence begins to deteriorate. The main "enemy" of a wicker fence is dampness, which causes the supports and the lower part of the structure to rot. To prolong the life of this product, it is necessary to prevent the accumulation of water under it. It is also undesirable for dense and tall grass to grow under the wattle fence, since increased humidity is created in the thickets.

For protection, you can use antiseptics or matte varnishes. They will protect the aerial part from moisture. If you prefer a varnish coating, then it is advisable to use matte compositions, as the gloss will look unnatural. Annual treatment with protective compounds will help to maximize the life of the wicker fence.

A wicker fence is easy to make with your own hands, even outside the city. In this case, financial costs will be minimal.

A wicker fence is a very simple design. That is why it received its popularity, prevalence and mass use in ancient times. Now it is a way to decorate a garden in an original and cheap way.

You can make a wicker fence with your own hands, you won’t need a lot of labor and material, and the result will be an excellent design of the site.

Necessary materials

In order to make a fence, you need stakes driven into the ground at the same distance and rods for weaving. Almost any branches or even boards can act as the latter, but the best are: willow, birch and alder vines.

Thick branches, wooden posts or pegs can be used as supports, however, such a fence will not last long, aggressive environment and adverse conditions will quickly destroy the tree in the ground.

Therefore, when planning the installation of such a structure, it is better to use metal stakes. You can make them from old pipes, metal rods and other suitable material.

To achieve the most natural effect, it is better to paint the metal in shades close to the color of the wooden rods used. The top of the pipe should be covered with a plug.

If you still decide to use wood as stakes, you must pre-treat it with special septic tanks and create a sand cushion around the part immersed in the ground in order to prevent rapid decay.

The diameter of the supports should be at least 6-8 cm, and the rods - 1-3 cm, but the higher and longer the fence, the larger the diameter of the wooden weaving is needed.

Start of installation work

The first step will be to mark the area allocated for the future building and distribute the installation sites for the posts. The distance between them depends on the length of the weaving material, the height of the fence and is individual for each case, but usually about half a meter.

After digging a trench, you need to insert stakes into it, fill it with sand if necessary, and for an even more durable and stable structure, you can fill the space around the pillars with cement.

The depth of the trench also depends on the height of the fence: up to 1.5 meters it is necessary to deepen 50 cm, up to 1 meter - 30 cm is enough, for a low fence that performs only a decorative function - 15 cm.

The rods must be soaked in water before use, to give them greater flexibility and the ability to fasten them together tightly and without obvious gaps. The rods are fixed at the beginning and end with wire. Their length should be more than the span between the columns by 10 cm.

If you pay attention to various photographs of a wicker fence, you will see that in addition to various materials for weaving, there are also various schemes and technologies for designing such a fence.

Types of laying rods

If you lay horizontal rods in a group, and not one at a time, a “chess” pattern is formed;

To make “vertical weaving”, horizontal boards or planks are attached to the support posts at a certain distance, and the rods are placed between these planks;

The most difficult option is “diagonal chess”. You can't do without a screwdriver and self-tapping screws. On the upper bar, fixed horizontally on the columns, rods are fixed with screws and turned out diagonally, and between them, on the opposite side, perform similar actions;

To make weaving from veneer, it is enough to build a structure of 4 supports, and between them horizontally go around the veneer trimmings. The veneer must be secured with nails.

It is possible to construct a wattle fence from reeds. To do this, it must first be collected in bundles, and then tightly fixed with wire between the wooden horizontal bars of the future fence;

A wicker fence made of boards is one of the most difficult designs to implement.

Wattle from boards

This is the most luxurious, most presentable and reliable wicker fence. To implement such a structure, you need to stock up:

  • Support bars. The fence will be massive and heavy, so it is advisable to use a tree with a diameter of at least 100 mm;
  • Thin boards to create weaving. The optimal size is 150x20x2100 cm;
  • Saw, self-tapping screws, screwdriver;
  • Antiseptic, paint and bitumen to process wood.

The distance between the bars should be about 2 m. In order for the fence to last longer, it is necessary to concrete the supports, carefully observing the vertical, even position. The ends of the bars buried in the ground must be treated with bitumen.

The boards must be cut to the same size and begin to fasten from the bottom. The ends should overlap on the supports. When arranging the boards, it is important to use the level. The boards are fastened with self-tapping screws. The next board is superimposed on top, but bends in the other direction - this is how the entire canvas is constructed.

After finishing work, it is imperative to cover the surface with varnish or paint in order to increase the service life of the material.

Decoration

Wicker fences made of branches and vines can be decorated with thematic decor: clay pots, dried peppers, sunflowers, pumpkins, wreaths.

Pots or baskets with flowering bushes or stones laid out along will also help to create the right atmosphere. These accessories will complement the fence and make it even more original.

findings

Wicker fences for summer cottages are one of the easiest and most budgetary ways to decorate a backyard area and create a zoning area. Solid and tall, it will also become a reliable defense.

Properly selected and well-crafted materials, carefully thought out and executed design, will make it a durable and strong hallmark of the entire site.

Photo of wicker fences with your own hands

A fence made of branches is an original design based on weaving technology. If you use strips of small thickness (wood veneer) or boards, you can make a fence with your own hands that is similar in design, but more durable. To build a fence from branches, it is allowed to use material from different tree species.

What can be used as canvas?

If a wicker fence is to be erected, the most preferred options for such a design are: birch, willow, hazel and maple. There are many varieties of trees and shrubs. However, to make a relatively reliable fence, a flexible material is used.

An alternative to the above options: a fence made of branches of an apple tree, mulberry, and also a cherry. In a word, it is allowed to use material that can be obtained in your own garden.

The best rods are made from branches of willow, alder, hazel (hazel) and birch, and wattle is also made from poplar and maple.

Pillars are best made from larch, which is explained by the resistance of this type of wood to moisture, which means it will last forever. The diameter of the branches and supports may be different. But it is recommended to use thicker branches.

A fence made of woven rods is constructed using branches of a large section (no more than 8 cm), they are used for poles. The higher the fence, the larger the supports should be.

If wood veneer or reeds are used, as well as edged or unedged boards, metal or wood poles are more suitable for such cases. But their cross section can be small or medium (for example, 40x40 cm). For comparison, to make a fence made of brick, corrugated board or metal with your own hands, large-sized supports are used: at least 60x60 cm, 80x80 cm.

Procurement of material is carried out in the spring. Moreover, it is recommended to cut the rods obliquely (angle up to 60 degrees). The fence is erected with freshly cut branches. This is the least labor intensive process. It is also allowed to make a fence from rods with your own hands, while using pre-prepared raw materials.

But then you have to soak the material (in boiling water, bath). The reed needs to be dried, simultaneously with this process the desired shade is formed: golden (drying in the sun), light green (in the shade).

How to make a frame?

Wooden wattle fence is built in several stages. The first of them is the preparation and installation of supports with your own hands. Thick branches used as poles are fired.

The supports must be prepared for installation - they must be impregnated, burned and tarred.

To extend the service life, they need to be coated with a deep penetration primer, and it is recommended to tar the lower part of the pillars.

The supports are usually buried to a level that corresponds to a third of the height of the fence made of rods. For example, for a construction of 1.5 m, the pillars are buried at least 50 cm.

Depending on which weaving technology is chosen, the distance between the supports is determined. With a horizontal orientation of the rods, it is sufficient to remove the pillars by 40-50 cm. Moreover, all supports should be at an equal distance.

To make a fence using the vertical weaving method, it is necessary to attach crossbars located in a horizontal plane to the supports. Their number is determined by the height of the fence. It is recommended to fasten the crossbars at a distance of up to 50 cm.

Weaving technology

So that at the end of the work it is possible to make the upper edge of the fence more even, dig in 1-2 thicker rods between the posts. Their length should exceed the height of the fence. This will intercept the wattle on top, and align the edge. Such rods are dug into the ground.

Scheme of vertical and horizontal weaving of the fence

Chess technology involves alternately around the pillars. The branches must be laid, starting from the thickened end. The thinner edge is easier to hide between the bars. To achieve a tighter laying, every few rows (3-4) the wattle is tapped with a hammer.

Depending on which weaving technology is used, it is possible to form a fence using not single rods, but groups of branches. If the edge of the vine protrudes too much from behind the post, it is cut.

Coloring

Any type of fence (wicker fence made of boards, veneer, rods or reeds) needs to be processed. Part of the material is covered with special compounds even before installation in the ground, for example, poles. If a harvested vine is used, then it is also pre-coated with stain and paints after drying.

The finished structure is also processed by special. impregnation, stain. The finish of wattle is almost always varnish. This allows you to maintain the natural appearance of the fence. One of the ways to process the finished hedge with your own hands is from a spray gun.

Features of the construction of wattle boards

If you plan to weave a fence with your own hands from a more durable material - boards, you need to pick up blanks of maximum length. In this case, the distance between the supports can reach 1.5 m.

Between them have intermediate strips installed vertically. Their number is determined by the degree of rigidity of the material, as well as the length of the section.

When a wicker fence is being built from boards, the tree is laid with the end side down, on top of each other without gaps. Checkered weaving is used. Boards must be very long. Such material can easily withstand bending loads.

After mounting the pillars, install two vertical boards between them, then horizontal boards should be fixed on these vertical boards.

Metal pillars for such structures are concreted. A combination of wattle and a concrete foundation protruding above the soil surface, brick pillars is allowed.

Other types of braids

The construction of veneer is somewhat different, as it is assembled from sections consisting of a frame and a woven fabric, which is fastened with self-tapping screws and nails. Another option for a fence is vertical weaving.

The finished version of the fence from the boards, for more detailed instructions, see the video below.

For its implementation, birch branches are used, and freshly cut, as long as they are flexible enough. The material is fastened with self-tapping screws, nails to horizontally oriented crossbars.

For such structures, pillars are also needed, however, they can be placed quite far from each other. At the final stage, the fence is treated with a protective compound, painted.

A wicker fence is a bright and colorful decoration in landscape design. Such an element of street decor evokes warm associations, reminiscent of comfort and rural life.

Due to the variety of types of weaving, and the ease of their manufacture, each person can personally create an original fence for his site. Wattle is considered the most environmentally friendly type of fencing, since natural materials are more often used for its manufacture, which, by the way, are also free, since they can be found on your own site.

But such a fence is short-lived, and does not tolerate changing weather conditions. Therefore, in a few years, the fence will have to be completely updated. Another feature of the wicker structure is the complexity of the repair: it will have to be redone all over, even if one element is damaged.

Since a wicker fence is a decorative element, you should not count on it to protect you from unexpected guests.

There are different types of fences:

  • height: high (up to 2 meters), low (up to half a meter) and medium (up to 1 meter). The height of the fence determines its function. A two-meter fence is considered a capital structure and can play a protective role. The low wattle fence is a purely decorative element.
  • weaving method: horizontal and vertical.
  • based on materials production: natural and artificial. The natural ones are willow, hazel, cattail, reed, vine- any flexible rods will do. Artificial - PVC, artificial rattan.

Natural materials for creating a wicker fence

To create a natural wattle fence, any tree species is suitable. The main requirement is the length and flexibility of the rods. So willow and hazel would be better suited for this role. In addition, plants grown near water bodies are saturated with moisture, and become more supple and smooth.

Examples of natural materials for the manufacture of wicker:

Regardless of the material chosen, special attention must be paid to vertical stakes that serve as the basis of a wicker structure. The durability of the fence largely depends on their strength. It is important to treat the ends of the stakes with an antiseptic or hot resin to avoid rotting. Even better - cover the entire hedge with an antiseptic. The most reliable racks are obtained with metal rods or pipes.

There is another trick that will help to avoid stagnation of water under the bars, and hence damage to the lower rows. To do this, you need to dig a small trench under the fence, and fill it with sand.

Mini fences made of willow for the garden.

Creation of wicker fences from artificial materials

Despite the fact that the very concept of "wicker fence" is associated with vines and natural rods, fences made of synthetic materials are gaining more and more popularity: PVC, artificial rattan.

PVC fences have significant advantages.

  • Long service life. Thanks to a modern protective coating, a PVC fence can serve up to 20 years without losing its original appearance.
  • Reliability. A fence made of PVC easily tolerates exposure to direct sunlight, humidity, and temperature changes. For care, it is enough to rub the plastic with a special compound, and cover the metal bases with an anti-corrosion agent.
  • Ease of installation. The light weight of the elements and the flexibility of the material allow you to quickly install a PVC fence in any area.
  • Wide range of. There are various variations of PVC structures, differing in the size of the cells and the length of the sections, and the rich color range will allow you to choose a shade that suits the design of the environment.
  • Affordable price.

Another popular material used to create street structures is. Natural rattan is made from a special type of palm that grows in Southeast Asia. Products from it are very expensive, including as a result of long-distance transportation.

Therefore, it gained great popularity artificial rattan which has many advantages:

  • Natural appearance. Artificial rattan is not inferior to natural vine in external qualities, but thanks to mass production, it becomes possible to save nature's resources. Therefore, at a price, artificial material comes out much cheaper than natural.
  • Ease of operation. Rattan does not react to the effects of climatic events, and therefore can last for many years without requiring repair or special care.
  • Natural rattan can grow into the ground over time, which will not happen with artificial material.
  • artificial rattan is much cheaper than natural.

Techno-rattan fence.

Artificial rattan is also used for production; in terms of strength characteristics, it significantly exceeds natural material. Production features allow producing rods of different textures and shapes: flat, round, rods with imitation of tree bark.

Weaving techniques

The technique of weaving fences is simple, no special skills or tools are needed to work. It is important to choose rods of the same thickness, approximately 2-2.5 cm, depending on the purpose of the fence. For greater stability, the length of the entire structure should be no less than the height of the fence plus another 30-50 cm.

At the beginning of work, a frame is installed, which is later braided with rods. A fishing line is used to mark the possible points for the location of the stakes. The optimal thickness of the frame rods is 4 cm.

There are several main types of weaving:

  • Inclined. With this technique, part of the rods is located diagonally. This method is suitable for small fences, or is used for decorative purposes.

In addition to the main types of weaving, there are also a lot of patterns, for example, pigtail or combined weaving. For these options, only bending branches are used. And thanks to imagination, any fence can be decorated with garden figures, or old pots, which will add even more color to weaving.

Making wattle from willow branches yourself

Weaving a fence from willow branches is an interesting process, but it requires a lot of labor. However, the durable and beautiful construction with a pleasant smell emanating from the wood is worth the effort.

The primary task in preparing for work is collection of twigs. Young shoots, one or two years old, are most suitable. They are elastic and break less, so the fence will turn out to be of better quality.

The best time to collect is winter or early spring, when the trees have not yet woken up.

Before cutting twigs from a tree, you need to take one and check the cut - a brown tint and a loose core indicate the fragility of the shoot. Optimum thickness of branches - 1.5 to 4 cm. Then they will need to be cleaned of small branches and knots.

Plants collected in winter must be steamed and then decomposed for further storage.

For support are selected strong spruce pegs, sharpened on one side. The stakes are driven firmly into the ground at a distance of 30 cm from each other, and fixed with transverse slats.

For weaving, the first rod is nailed to the base pillar, and circled around the next pillars in eights. When one branch ends, they take the next one, carefully connecting them together. The proper levels are woven in exactly the same way, only the order of wrapping the pillars in a checkerboard pattern changes.

At the end, the hedge is decorated with sculptures, pots,. The sunflower growing near the fence looks organic.
