We restore old doors. How to restore a wooden door

It is relatively easy to maintain entrance and interior doors in good condition and thereby extend their service life. If the restoration of “Canadian” type doors is reduced only to their repainting, then special skills are not needed for this. But, if you have a solid wood canvas with mouldings and embossed elements, then even updating the varnish and paint becomes a daunting task. Sagging appears in the recesses, paint and varnish lie unevenly. In a word, without professional restoration of solid wood doors, you will rather spoil them than bring them into a decent appearance.

Opportunities for the restoration of doors in our workshop

Our company has been providing professional services for the restoration of furniture and interior items for over 10 years. Experienced painters, joiners and assemblers have all the necessary skills and knowledge to accurately process wood and replace damaged parts in the door restoration process.

With the restoration of old doors, a number of nuances and subtleties also arise. The restorers end up with items that are half a century old, or even more. They must be approached with care, varnished in a clean and ventilated area, dried and polished properly. Restoration of old doors, which have antique value, in principle should not be handled by unskilled workers.

Our range of services includes:

  • repair of the door frame and the leaf itself, elimination of distortions and irregularities in the geometry of products;
  • elimination of mechanical damage: cracks, chips, dents, deep scratches, burn marks;
  • renovation of the paintwork;
  • replacement of fittings: fasteners, hinges, handles, locks;
  • installation of heat and noise insulating edging, chippers;
  • restoration of doors with replacement of stained-glass windows and glazing elements.

Doors experience heavy loads throughout their entire service life. It is not surprising that sooner or later they lose their original appearance: scratches, scuffs appear, the paint layer peels off. Wooden ones, which react to changes in temperature and humidity, are especially affected. Of course, it is easier to replace them, but this pleasure is not cheap. Yes, and it can be a pity to throw away an old door with a history and a unique design. Restoration will be the solution.

Preparing for Recovery

Removing the canvas from the hinges

First you need to remove the door and remove it from the opening. The order of work is determined by the design of the loops. According to the type of installation, the loops are:

  • mortise;
  • invoices;
  • screw-in.

It is more important for dismantling to know the type of mechanism, there are only two of them:

  • sectional;
  • one-piece.

The detachable mechanism simplifies the task. To remove the door from the hinges, you only need a lever, which is suitable for a crowbar, nail puller or an ordinary board.

If the hinges are connected by one pin, it is even easier to disassemble them. You don't even need a lever for this.

Remove the cap and remove the pin

Remove the decorative caps and remove the axle element. This is done with a hammer, as the pin in the loop sits tightly. Be careful not to damage the door.

Grab the door and set it aside

If the stem is stuck due to corrosion, treat the hinges with rust remover, WD-40 will do, and try again. After removing the pin, the door will easily detach.

Treat the rod with rust remover and try again

They do it differently with non-detachable loops. To work, you need a screwdriver or screwdriver.

If only the canvas will be repaired without replacing the loops, twist the card from it.

Removing the plastic door is also not difficult. The design of its loops is detachable, with one pin, or axial element.

The canvas is removed, you can proceed to the next step.

We release the door from the handle

For high-quality restoration, the canvas must be freed from all decorative and functional elements, and first of all from the handle.

Remove handles and other decorative items from doors

Interior door handles are divided into three types:

  • stationary;
  • pressure;
  • knobs.

Stationary - the simplest and most reliable. There are no built-in locks, only a latch or pinch rollers. This simplifies their dismantling.

Models with visible self-tapping screws are disassembled with a screwdriver or screwdriver. If fasteners are not found, it is possible that the structure has a common threaded rod. You can remove it by fixing the handle on one side of the door and turning it counterclockwise on the other.

For a handle with a mechanical latch, the screws are first twisted and the decorative trim around the handle is removed. A latch-tongue and a tetrahedral rod will be found. They should be removed, after which the handles can be easily removed.

The design of the lever handle is simple and reliable, which makes it popular for interior doors. Two L-shaped brackets are connected with a rod. When you click on one of them, the latch-latch hides and the door can be opened.

L-shaped brackets of the lever handle are connected by a rod

Dismantling such a handle will take a little longer than a stationary one.

  1. First unscrew all the screws holding the cover and remove it.
  2. Take out one handle, the second is taken out together with the rod.
  3. Unscrew the screws holding the latch on the end of the door, remove the mechanism.

Knob - a round handle with a built-in lock. Opening occurs by turning around the axis. Knob allows you to close the door with a key from the inside. As a rule, they are equipped with a locking pin with a small spring.

Now the canvas is freed from fittings and nothing prevents you from moving on to the next step. For paneled lacquered and painted doors, you will need to completely disassemble the canvas. This will help to better process embossed surfaces.

The paneled door is a frame made of wooden bars with inserts of thinner planks, plywood or hardboard.

Dismantling the paneled door leaf

  1. We examine the canvas and find wooden tongues that hold the joints together. They are located in the corners opposite the jumpers, but in some designs they may not be.
  2. We drill the found tongues with a drill with a drill of a suitable diameter.
  3. We arm ourselves with a rubber mallet and strike the protruding parts from the center to the edges to separate the structure. We act carefully so as not to damage the wood.
  4. As a result, we obtain individual details, which we will deal with in the future.

You can do without disassembly, but then the work will require more effort and pedantry.

The tree reacts to temperature fluctuations and changes in humidity, so the door during operation can swell from moisture or dry out from its lack. This leads to a violation of the geometry of the canvas.

If the fit of the canvas to the box is too tight, the door does not close well, cut the strapping, setting the required gap.

Plane end surfaces

Too large gaps between the door and the frame require a more thorough approach.

Before starting the next step, cover the furniture with a film, the work is dusty. It is better to carry it out in a workshop or garage.

Removing the paint layer

Lay the canvas on a horizontal surface. It is better if it is a large table, but stools, goats or bars are suitable. The main thing is that the design is stable.

There are several ways to remove old paintwork:

  • mechanical;
  • thermal;
  • chemical.

Mechanical involves the use of a grinder, grinder or drill with a grinding attachment. If there are no power tools, do the processing by hand.

Remove old paint from doors

First, coarse-grained sandpaper is used, with which the entire canvas is blackly skinned. Panels, glazing beads and pattern are processed manually.

The paint is removed with a sandpaper with a large grain

After that, the surface is polished again, but with a sandpaper with an average grain size. It will smooth out roughness and remove raised fibers.

The general rule for sanding wood products is that with each pass the grit of the sanding decreases.

With the thermal method, a building hair dryer is used. The paint coating softens under the influence of high temperature and can be easily removed with a spatula. After this treatment, paint residues are removed with an abrasive sandpaper and the surface is polished.

Old paint is heated with a hairdryer and removed with a spatula

The problem is that along with the paint, the wood on which it is applied also warms up and softens. Having experience in such processing of a wooden door, I can say that careless work with heated wood leads to its delamination and scuffing with a spatula. Such defects will then have to be additionally puttied.

To avoid problems, do not overheat the surface, hold the spatula as close as possible to it, do not try to remove all layers of paint the first time, if there are several. It is better to walk in one place two or three times than to ruin the canvas.

Do not use this method for doors lined with fiberboard. Together with the paint, the top layer of the plate also peels off.

The chemical method is the most gentle. Apply paint remover to the surface with a brush. Wait for the time indicated in the annotation for the reaction between the liquid and the paint to occur.

After the paint has dried, it is removed with a spatula.

Carefully remove the swollen layer with a spatula, rinse the canvas. The remaining stains can be treated with a building hair dryer, blowtorch or iron. Wrap the iron with a thick cloth. Adjust the temperature so as not to damage the canvas.

Remove the paint completely, down to the wood. Previously primed areas also need to be cleaned.

When all the paint has been removed, go over with a fine-grained sandpaper. So you remove the residue and sand the canvas. Grind along the wood fibers, otherwise there will be traces that the new coating will not mask.

Glass replacement

Doors with decorative inserts are beautiful, let in light and are often installed in interior openings. But they have one drawback - glass tends to break. In this case, it becomes necessary to replace it. This is not difficult to do, but as in any business, the process has its own nuances.

First of all, the glass itself. It will have to be ordered in a glass workshop, since it is unlikely that a finished product of a suitable size and pattern will be available for sale. In addition, the glass must be of increased strength, the usual will not work. The best choice is triplex, tempered impact-resistant glass.

But first you need to remove the fragments and measure. How to do this depends on the design of the door. The most common option for fastening the insert is with the help of quarters, sometimes called glazing beads. Whatever you call it, the essence does not change: these are curly slats that hold the element in the canvas.

The procedure in this case is as follows:

Video: replacing glass in a non-separable door

Everything is a little more complicated if the insert is inside the canvas. But this is not an unsolvable task either.

  1. Examine the ends of the door to find the plugs hiding the fasteners. It can be self-tapping screws or furniture confirmants.
  2. We unscrew the screws, remove the long sidewall.
  3. Now he takes out the glass, we release it from the seal.
  4. We rearrange the seal to a new one.
  5. We install the glass and assemble the canvas in the reverse order.

Video: how to replace glass in a door

When disassembling the quarters, try not to damage them and the canvas. We remove the found chips, dents and other defects with putty.

Door putty

Before repairing damage, wipe the surface with a damp cloth to remove any dust remaining after sanding. If the surface has not been primed, it is primed twice and dried.

The choice of composition depends on the size of the defect. For minor scratches and dents, acrylic wood putty is used; more serious damage is recommended to be covered with an overlay made of the same type of wood, sticking it on the damaged area.

Acrylic putty becomes colorless after drying, which is important if the coating will not hide the structure of the tree.

Masters advise using a mixture of small sawdust with PVA wood glue as a restoration composition. The ingredients are mixed until a thick paste is obtained, which closes the damage. After drying and grinding, the place of repair is almost imperceptible.

After sanding the surface, remove the dust

Puttying is carried out in two stages: the first layer is applied, dried, polished. Then the process is repeated. Do not forget to wipe the canvas with a napkin after each step to remove dust. This algorithm allows you to make the surface perfectly flat.

Painting a wooden door

After preparing the canvas, you can start painting it. It is carried out in two stages: the first layer is applied with white matte enamel, the coating is tinted with the second layer, it is given the necessary shade.

When choosing paint, pay attention to hiding power. How well it hides surface defects depends on this characteristic.

For work you will need:

  • a set of rollers;
  • cuvette;
  • end brush;
  • narrow brush;
  • primer paint;
  • finishing enamel.
  1. With a narrow brush, paint over the profiled edges of the panels.

    Brush over the profiled edges

  2. Apply paint to the panels with a roller.

    Apply paint on the panel with a roller

  3. Smooth the applied layer along the wood fibers with an end brush.
  4. With a narrow brush, go over the profiled edges.
  5. Wipe the jumpers outside the panels with a rag so that smudges after drying do not create bumps.
  6. Paint the ends and frame with a roller.
  7. Smooth the paint with an end brush along the fibers.

    After applying the paint with a roller, smooth it with a brush

  8. Let the coating dry.
  9. If necessary, apply another coat of primer in the same order.
  10. After the primer layer has dried, apply a topcoat according to the same algorithm.
  11. When tinting the canvas, apply several layers to obtain the desired color saturation.

For lovers of natural wood, another way is suitable - opening with varnish. It does not hide the structure of the tree, but emphasizes it. You can use the method only on canvases without significant defects, otherwise the puttied areas will shine through the varnish.

  1. Choose a varnish. It can be transparent or tinted.
  2. Stir it right in the jar until smooth. Work slowly so that no bubbles form.
  3. Dilute part of the varnish with water or thinner, depending on the type of base.
  4. Apply a primer coat to the prepared surface with thinned varnish. Work with a brush, applying the composition along the fibers. Do not interrupt the strokes, otherwise stains will remain.
  5. After the primer has dried, sand the surface with a fine-grained sandpaper.
  6. Apply the second layer with undiluted varnish across the fibers.
  7. Repeat layers until you achieve a perfectly even surface.

After each layer of paint has dried, go over the canvas with a fine-grained sandpaper.

It happens that restoration is required for a laminated door. There are some peculiarities here.

Laminated door restoration

Despite the strength and durability of the laminated coating, it does not last forever. Scratches and abrasions that appear spoil the surface and give it an untidy appearance. The way out will be the restoration of the canvas, which is carried out in several ways.

Wax, paste, laminate restoration marker will help get rid of small defects. To use them, you do not even need to remove the door from its hinges.

Match the marker to the color of the coating and carefully paint over the defect. Apply soft wax on top. After curing, polish with a felt cloth.

Fill deeper scratches with hard wax. It is sold in the form of pencils in the colors of various types of wood; it requires warming up before use.

Waxes of different colors can be mixed to obtain the desired shade

Sand the edges of the scratch, degrease and clean from dust. Melt the wax and apply with a spatula to the damage with a margin. After hardening, remove excess and polish the surface with felt.

By mixing waxes of different colors, you can achieve the desired color, suitable for a particular coating.

Doors with significant damage can be painted. To do this, first of all, you need to remove the protective coating and give the surface a haze for better adhesion (adhesion).

  1. Treat the canvas with fine-grained sandpaper using a grinder with a nozzle or manually.
  2. Clean the surface of dust and prime. Choose a primer with good adhesion to any surface (polyurethane based).
  3. Repair cracks, chips, and other imperfections with latex putty or epoxy resin.
  4. Sand the restoration areas and prime again.
  5. Cover the door with polyurethane paint or alkyd enamel using a velor roller.
  6. Paint the profile edges with a narrow brush with a beveled edge.
  7. Let the paint dry and apply another coat.
  8. Coat the surface with varnish. It will protect the paint from scratches and abrasion.

A less troublesome option is pasting with a film or veneer. In this case, it is important not to rush, to act carefully so that no air bubbles remain under the coating. It also requires pre-sanding and priming. The same scheme is used for painting and pasting plastic doors.

The veneer is glued to the surface with a heated iron.

The top layer of the laminate is a high-strength plastic with very poor adhesion.

Metal doors are most often installed at the entrance, where they are exposed to the external environment. If the door is painted, then after some time rust will inevitably appear on it.

Over time, rust appears on the metal door

The situation can be corrected, for this you will need:

  • iron brush;
  • sandpaper;
  • solvent;
  • primer;
  • dye;
  • brushes;
  • roller;

Much more often now you can find metal doors with a decorative overlay. It can be made of laminate, MDF or wood. In this case, the restoration is carried out in the same way as doors from the corresponding material. The overlay can also be installed on the old canvas.

Replacing old hinges

We have already figured out how to remove the old hinges. First, the door is removed, then the fasteners are unscrewed from the cards on the canvas and the box. Or vice versa, if the loops are one-piece.

It happens that the screws do not lend themselves. In this case, you can try to moisten them with kerosene and wait a bit. Or heat it up with a hair dryer. In advanced cases, fasteners will have to be drilled.

Now you can install new loops. But first you need to choose the right ones. To give preference to a detachable or one-piece model is a matter of taste. One has only to take into account that the door with detachable is easier to install on your own, without outside help.

What really matters is the choice of right or left stitches. Deciding which ones you need is quite simple: stand in front of the door so that it opens on you. If the loops are on the right, then these are exactly what you need. If on the left, your option is left loops.

Now it remains to install them. It happens that the old hinges are too deep into the box. In this case, the installation of a hardboard lining cut out according to the nest template will help. The same, if necessary, is done on the canvas.

The nest that does not correspond to the new loops is increased to fit with a chisel. After that, we fasten the card to the box with long self-tapping screws. In a similar way, we install the upper cards on the door leaf.

It remains only to install the canvas. With an impromptu lever made of scrap, a nail puller or a board, we lift the door and connect the halves of the hinges.

Raise the canvas and connect the loops

We check the performance of the structure and lubricate the hinges for silent and soft operation. For this purpose, modern aerosol lubricants are suitable, but you can also use the old grandfather method - graphite.

It is better to lubricate the hinges before installing the canvas

Lift the door slightly and insert a piece of soft pencil lead into the gap between the mating parts of the hinge. Open and close the door several times to turn the lead into powder. The absence of squeaks and softness of the course are provided.

Do-it-yourself restoration will not only significantly save money. It is also a fascinating process that allows you to return the doors to their original appearance or even improve it. And it's not such a difficult task. Arm yourself with patience, the necessary tools, follow the recommendations and everything will work out.

Sections of the article:

The door is an interior detail that constantly experiences high loads. Naturally, after a while, the former aesthetic appearance of the door leaf is lost. Various defects appear on the surface - scratches, cracks in the paintwork, dents, marks from dog teeth and claws. And if buying new doors is not an option, you should start restoring old doors. What is this process, what tools and materials are needed - we will tell in our article.

The restoration process is quite complicated, but quite feasible. There are many simple options for restoring interior doors.

Necessary materials and tools

Depending on what type of door has become unusable, a certain set of materials and tools should be prepared for restoration work. So, you definitely need antiseptic impregnation, varnishes and stains, paint removers, wood paint, putty and primer.

This is about materials. Now let's see what we need from the tool. These are an electric drill, a set of spatulas, chisels and screwdrivers, a carpenter's knife, a roller, brushes, emery cloth, nails and a hammer, pliers, glazing beads, door fittings and a building hair dryer.

Restoring a wooden door

Door leafs made of solid wood are worthy of praise - they are reliable, environmentally friendly products that have a very aesthetic appearance. But such structures are very cumbersome - it is very difficult to restore them. However, subject to the technology of restoration work, the result is worth the effort. Natural wood lends itself well to restoration.

Training

The old door must be removed and laid horizontally on the most even plane. If the canvas has upholstery and glass inserts, they should also be dismantled. Next, you need to move on to removing the paintwork - usually there are several layers of paint on such canvases. To remove the paint easily and quickly, you will need a building hair dryer - the coating is heated until it is swollen, and then easily removed with a spatula. Residual paint can be removed by sanding.

It is important in the process of warming up the door leaf not to overheat it. As a result of overheating, wood can change its natural color. It is best to remove the paint outside or in a ventilated room.

At the final stage of the preparatory work, the entire canvas must be coated with a primer.

The main stage of restoration work

The first step is to carefully examine the canvas - it often happens that after the preparation process there are some minor flaws. To eliminate them, you can use putty. Based on the state of the door leaf, it is processed partially in places of defects or completely. Then, after the putty has dried, it is polished. Grinding is a rather delicate process, it should be treated with all care. A surface is well polished only when there are no traces of processing on it.

After grinding, dust and dirt may remain on the canvas. Before painting the product, the surface is thoroughly cleaned. It is desirable to apply paint in two steps - at the first stage, the canvas is covered with enamels, then they go directly to staining.

First of all, the color of the future door is selected - it is recommended to use stains. They can be either water or oil based. Stain or enamel should be applied through an airbrush, but brushes and sponges can also be used at home. Clots of stains and enamels should not be left on the surface - this can affect the color of the entire door leaf.

Paint or varnish is applied with a roller with a short pile length or with a brush. If it is a brush, then it should be of high quality and better if it is made of artificial material.

Last step

At this stage, it remains to install the door leaf in its rightful place. But the process is not limited to not only hanging the door leaf on the hinges with subsequent alignment. Sometimes the door frame is reinforced with reinforcing bars or anchor bolts. These manipulations are performed with the door closed. After installation, the gaps between the box and the opening are filled with mounting foam.

The process of restoring lacquered door panels

Let's look at how you can restore an old lacquered door. The first step is to remove the old coating. The door is carefully processed with sandpaper, and then polished in the direction of the wood fibers.

It is better to apply a new varnish with a flute brush or a foam swab. Lacquer is applied in at least four layers intermittently. The second layer can be applied after 2-3 hours, but all the rest - in a day. All this time the room should be very well ventilated.

The resulting surface is then necessarily polished - since this process is quite laborious, it is recommended to use a grinder with a felt or felt polishing nozzle.

Restoring veneered doors

The first step is to measure the surface of the door leaf and cut the harvested veneer. Then glue is applied to the canvas and allowed to absorb for 10 minutes.

If the door is not even, then it needs to be leveled - for large irregularities, a planer is used, for small ones, you can get by with an emery sheet. If there are chips or cracks on the surface, they are restored with putty.

For gluing veneer, an iron is used, the heating temperature of which is not higher than 50 degrees. After the veneer is heated, the surface is fixed by lapping. After that, it is necessary to press down the structure with a heavy object. It is important to carefully control the gluing process so that no voids form under the veneer.

Laminate can be glued in the same way, however, liquid nails should be used to fix it.

This method of restoring an old door has advantages - it is a rich choice of veneer, its long service life, as well as an acceptable cost. But such a coating is very sensitive to humidity and temperature changes.

Restoration of solid wood doors using MDF panels

The restoration process is very, very simple. MDF panels suitable for the style of the interior are glued onto the old door leaf. This is a popular method and it also has some advantages - for example, these panels look very aesthetically pleasing, withstand moisture and mechanical damage. Among the shortcomings - the panels wear out in those places where they are often affected.

Restoration of doors from fiberboard

The technology for restoring such door panels is slightly different from working with door panels made of solid wood. These differences are not very significant, but you should still know them.

Some sources indicate that a blowtorch can be used to remove a layer of paint - no, it just should not be used. Only an iron or a building hair dryer is allowed. For grinding work, it is allowed to use only fine sandpaper - the surface of fiberboard is quite thin. It is possible to slightly change the surface relief with the help of decorative elements - it will imitate a paneled canvas. Then, after grinding, the entire door structure is painted.

There is another option. In this case, the surface will look like natural solid wood - for this, the surface is simply glued with veneer. How to restore an old door in this way is indicated above. After the work is completed, the door will simply not be recognized - everyone will think that it is made of real natural materials.

There are more complex ways, but for them you need to have certain skills. For example, a blind door can receive glass decorative elements. To do this, mark the place for future inserts, and then make a cutout using a jigsaw. The resulting space is reinforced with slats. How the inserts will look like, how many there will be - depends only on the imagination of the master and the style of the interior.

Door frame and fittings

These elements of the door also need restoration work as urgently as the door itself. In addition, the fittings should be replaced. Experts recommend completely replacing the hinges to match the color of the restored door leaf, handles and lock. It is recommended to purchase only high-quality products - the service life and ease of use of doors depend on their quality.

Many home craftsmen believe that you can simply purchase and install a new box - but this is not so. Doors that have been used for a long time have some deflections in various directions. When changing the box, you can only increase the gaps - this will not look aesthetically pleasing.

As you can see, the restoration of old doors is possible. This is not a difficult process that you can do yourself. The materials that will be required during the manufacturing process can be purchased at construction hypermarkets - often, their price is quite affordable. Such restoration allows significant savings - after all, even the simplest economy-class interior door costs from 4,000 rubles. In addition, old doors are high-quality products made of natural and solid wood, and after restoration they will look perfect.

Very often, do-it-yourself restoration of wooden doors is the only way out and allows you to keep the door in its original state without significant investment.

Of course, it will be much easier to get rid of old wooden doors and purchase new ones, however, there are cases when this item harmoniously fits into the surrounding interior, and it is simply not possible to pick up a similar one.

It is the restoration of doors with your own hands that allows you to effortlessly give a second life to an old door.

At the same time, the principle of operation is the same, both for the entrance and for the interior door. Differences can only be in the presence of a glass insert, which is recommended to be removed before starting work.

It should be noted that it is possible to restore both a door made of veneer and solid wood, as well as an entrance made of metal.

Preparatory stage of work

Almost any opening made of wood is covered with a special coating in the form of paint or varnish to protect the canvas.

At the initial stage of restoration work, the old coating will need to be completely removed, but before that it is recommended to carefully inspect the door and evaluate the amount of work.

You can remove the old coating either with a grinding machine or with a fan heater; in some cases, you can remove the old varnish or paint with a special do-it-yourself wash.

If a wash was chosen to remove the top layer, then you must carefully read the attached instructions.

As a rule, it is applied for some time to the canvas, after which it is removed with a scraper.

If necessary, to completely remove the old top layer, the procedure will need to be repeated with your own hands.

Old application can also be quickly removed with a do-it-yourself fan heater. If you use this universal device, then there will be much less debris from work than when using a solvent.

Such a fan should be directed to the canvas until the coating begins to swell, then the top layer is removed with a scraper or spatula.

Be careful, as strong heat can damage the product. In the event that paint remains on the door leaf in some places, it can be removed from the array with sandpaper.

When working with a grinder, it should be remembered that it removes the top layer only in large cavities. In hard-to-reach places, you still have to work manually.

Canvas restoration

At the next stage of work on the restoration of the old door, it is necessary to restore the leaf of the door array itself with your own hands. As a rule, the weakest point of a wooden door is its lower part.

In addition, all chips and cracks are effectively removed using a special do-it-yourself wood putty. In the event that the lower part is not subject to restoration and restoration, it can be replaced with a new one.

After the restoration work at this stage is completed, you can start grinding the door leaf with your own hands.

The workflow of grinding the door leaf is conditionally divided into two stages. At the first stage, a rough cleaning of the array is performed, in which all gross defects and flaws are removed from the old product.

It is best to process the entire surface manually, and for the convenience of work, put sandpaper on a bar, while hand movements should be directed along the fiber.

Remove all dust from the door leaf with your own hands with a damp sponge.

Painting stage of work

At the final stage of work on the restoration of the door, its painting is carried out. This can be done both manually and with the help of an airbrush in automatic mode.

When choosing a paintwork material, you should pay attention to the subsequent operating conditions of the product, as well as to the type of wood.

In the event that painting will be carried out with an airbrush, then work must be carried out in a well-ventilated area.

In this case, the paint is applied evenly on the entire door leaf with a thin layer, however, attention should be paid to ensure that there are no smudges on metal or wooden entrance doors.

The most commonly used manual method of painting the door leaf. Such painting requires the acquisition of a roller and a brush.

Previously, the entire door leaf is covered with a layer of primer with its urks, after which it must be allowed to dry well.

When painting the door, it is recommended to install it in a horizontal position, which will significantly reduce the risk of smudges.

At the first stage, hard-to-reach places and all protruding elements are covered with paint, and only after that large planes are painted with a roller.

After the restoration of the door is completed, it must be dried well and hung in place.

Features of the restoration of interior doors

At its core, the restoration of interior doors made of veneer has some significant differences.

This work on the restoration of the canvas should be carried out with the utmost care and as accurately as possible.

They paint the veneer door in exactly the same way as the one that is made of solid wood. You can use both brushes and a roller, as well as an airbrush.

An effective way to restore an old interior door, which will make it even more attractive, is to glue it with a new veneer.

By itself, this material with a wood structure has an adhesive base. In its texture, it is completely similar to natural wood and will help to effectively restore even the most unsightly canvas.

Invalid Displayed Gallery

In appearance, the door restored with veneer will not differ in any way from the one made of solid wood.

You can apply an interesting pattern, change the facade or make a stylish appliqué from improvised materials. All this will only add to the doors of originality.

Features of the restoration of entrance metal doors

Quite often, the front door loses its original appearance and becomes unattractive.

Today, they try to use an iron door as an entrance door, however, in certain cases it can also be restored.

As a rule, the restoration of metal entrance and interior doors requires certain skills and the availability of a special tool, but you can do it yourself.

In most cases, an iron or metal door requires either a seal replacement or a facade finish. In the first case, it will be necessary to remove the old seal and install a new one instead.

If restoration of the facade of an iron door is required, then it is necessary to decide on the choice of a new coating.

Some firms, in an effort to make money, use low-quality materials for production, and only consumers suffer from this. Expensive door models will correspond to the declared characteristics, but the price will also be appropriate. Therefore, a reasonable question arises about carrying out an independent restoration.

Refurbish or buy new?

Most of the doors were made of natural wood and therefore were able to last for decades and survived several generations. In addition, they can be of family value. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the option of self-restoration. This does not require special skills, and recovery will not take much time and will help save money.

Note!

The main thing is to correctly determine the condition of the door leaf, box and fittings.

If there are elements that have become unusable, then they will have to be replaced with new ones. However, if they are rotten or become rotten by more than 40%, then you need to consider buying new ones.

Restoration Benefits

  1. The old doors fit well, and the wood has been thoroughly dried over the years. As a result, they will not lead, and they will not deform. The box fits snugly to the canvas, so high-quality thermal insulation will be provided.
  2. The amount of installation work is minimized. Basically, you have to remove the canvas and accessories.
  3. The decorative finish is not damaged, as the replacement of the box is not required.

Dismantling works

To determine the condition of the doors, they will need to be carefully removed from the hinges. To do this, it is opened 90 0 in relation to the door frame and proceed to unscrew the hinges. If you try to remove it by ordinary prying with a crowbar or other lever under the bottom, you can damage not only the end parts of the door, but also leave marks on the outer surface of the box. They cannot be restored, so they will need to be replaced. As a result, the door will no longer close tightly in the future. Therefore, a wooden plank is substituted under the bottom so that the canvas is fixed. First, unscrew the bottom loop, and then, holding the canvas, and the top one.

Assessing the condition of old doors

During an external examination, damage is assessed, concerning not only the influence of time, but also traces of the influence of insects and fungi. They should be absent or insignificant, without deep internal penetration, which can affect the strength of the structure and reduce the protective function to a minimum. Admitted defects in the manufacture of the canvas and the box are easily determined by the asymmetry of the structure and deformations due to the use of poorly dried wood. Attention is drawn to natural wear and tear, which should not impair overall functionality. Before restoring an old wooden door, this procedure should be carried out to determine the range of work being done.

Minor restoration possible with special tools

Inspection of rotten areas

To understand the state of wood, it is necessary to study the places affected by rot. To do this, take a chisel or any sharp tool and stick it. If it's just surface wear, it will be difficult to stick the point in. But even if it is easy to do this, then this may indicate the presence of an ordinary crack. Therefore, try to pierce several places with the blade, placing it in a perpendicular direction. In the same way, rotten areas are localized for subsequent replacement.

Studying the state of the protective surface

With an intact outer surface, it may give the impression that the doors are in excellent condition, but in fact this opinion may be erroneous. It is necessary to take a small rubber mallet and, gently tapping on the surface, determine the presence of possible voids and hidden cracks. Small cracks in the finish can serve as a guide for this.

Note!

To make the restoration of interior doors significantly simplified, you can completely peel off the paint without damaging the canvas.

The same action should be carried out with slopes and a threshold.

Removing old paint

To clean off old paint without damaging the canvas, use a building hair dryer with a flat nozzle. The door must be placed on a stable surface in a well-ventilated area. Heating is carried out in stages, until the beginning of swelling of the paint. The main thing here is not to overdo it so that the surface of the wood does not darken. Then the remnants of the layer are cleaned off with a hairdryer or. In hard-to-reach places, they pick it out with a knife. In the case of slopes and a threshold, they proceed similarly in place if it is not necessary to repair the box.

Grinding surfaces

Sanding is mandatory in most cases, as for some reason minor surface damage may occur, and applying paint will not fix them. Therefore, do-it-yourself restoration of wooden doors requires surface cleaning. The roughness of the paper is selected depending on the presence of remnants of the old coating and the size of the defects. If the paint has penetrated deeply into the material, then emery or a grinding wheel is used. It is undesirable to use a power tool for these purposes, since it is possible to skew, make holes and bumps. Grind the surface over the entire area evenly in circular motions with a constant movement of the arm in length.

We fix defects

All cracks, small grooves, nests and chips are easily repaired with acrylic putty. Before applying it, the surface is thoroughly cleaned of dust, and then applied in accordance with the instructions for use. Before restoring a wooden door, corner damaged areas are reinforced with wooden bars of the correct geometric shape. This is done to maximize the contact area of the putty. The patches are placed along the fibers and are made from the same type of wood as the main canvas. The entire surface is then puttied. After drying, polishing is carried out again.

Cracks in the door can be sealed with sealant

Applying a decorative layer

After all surfaces have been cleaned, they should be stained to protect them from pests. It is applied in any convenient way: with a roller, sprayer or foam rubber. After drying, finishing layers of varnish and paint are applied. To do this, it is desirable to use a brush with a minimum pile size in order to avoid the appearance of streaks and streaks. The varnish is applied in up and down motions along the canvas. Then wait until it dries and apply a second layer. The wood should be impregnated with high quality and change the natural color to brown. After that, it is carried out in a similar way in two layers.

Final touches

If all the work was done correctly, then it was possible to successfully update the wooden door and you can proceed with its installation. The hinges are screwed into the previous places, a new door lock with handles is inserted, and then the canvas is mounted in the doorway. All actions are performed in the reverse order from the dismantling process. The door should fit snugly against the door frame and not form gaps. If there are any, then perform the adjustment.
