Gate in the old style. Wooden fence with gate and gate

Wooden gates are considered optimal in terms of price, reliability and appearance. They are cheaper than forged ones and much more attractive than profiled sheet doors. How to build a wooden gate with your own hands?

Advantages of wood as a material

Wood as a gate material has many advantages:

  • it is easy to process, lighter than metal,
  • it is available material
  • it is beautiful and durable.

Softwoods are commonly used, as the resin naturally protects the wood from water, fungus, and rot. In addition, the coniferous tree has a beautiful structure. Resin can come to the surface from heat, forming drops, but this is a minor drawback. Most often used:

  • pine - it is distinguished by a small number of branches and a straight trunk, so it is easy to process pine, however, it is difficult to color;
  • spruce - has a homogeneous structure, so metal fasteners hold well in it, spruce is light and durable, its wood is quite light, the disadvantage is a porous structure, due to which spruce is more susceptible to decay than, for example, pine;
  • larch is a dense, strong and slightly decay-prone wood with a beautiful texture.

They try not to use hardwoods, since such a tree is unstable to moisture. The exception is oak. Photos of beautiful wooden gates are presented below.

Training

The site also needs to be prepared. To do this, large stones, bushes are removed, the soil is leveled, breaking hard lumps. If necessary, the site is marked with a cord stretched over pegs.

Support posts must be at least a meter deep into the soil. It is better to make them not wooden, but metal, concrete or brick. The pillars are concreted, while the sashes are hung in place when the concrete has completely set. Metal poles must be painted with anti-corrosion paint before installation, wooden poles must be treated with bitumen, mastic or used oil.

A horizontal beam is installed in the upper part, which will prevent the pillars from warping under the weight of the wings.

Installation of wooden poles

Wooden posts are installed as follows.

  • They drill wells or dig holes 1 m deep. The distance between them should be slightly more than the width of the gate leaf, and the width of the pit should be 20 cm more than the thickness of the pillar. The width of the gates is made at least 3.5 m, and the gates - at least 1.2 m.
  • At the bottom of the pits, 5 cm of sand are poured and spilled with water to compact it.
  • Next, pour 5 cm of crushed stone.
  • The lower part of the pillars is treated with an antiseptic, bitumen, mastic, oil, or fired with a burner or blowtorch to prevent decay.
  • Pillars are installed in pits strictly vertically, along a plumb line. It's better to do it together.
  • The sinuses of the pit are covered with rubble and rammed.
  • Then the pillars are concreted with a liquid cement solution.

frame

How to make a wooden gate? First you need to assemble the frame for the sashes.

To make a simple wooden sash frame, for each sash you will need:

  • 2 beams for horizontal beams,
  • 2 vertical bars,
  • 2 beams for jumpers.

Usually, the sash lining protrudes 20-30 cm from the top and bottom of the frame.

Do-it-yourself gate frame is connected by fastening into a spike. Additionally, the joints are reinforced with self-tapping screws or dowels. The frame is assembled by placing it on a flat surface.

In the middle of the frame, an additional jumper is made for structural rigidity. Mowing is made in the corners. They are bars 30-40 cm long with ends cut at 45 degrees.

You can also make one or two diagonal jumpers. If two jumpers are made crosswise, one of them is sawn into two parts of the required size. The figure shows the frame options.

sheathing

Do-it-yourself wooden gates are sheathed with boards, slats or a picket fence. Practical and cheap gates are obtained from a chain-link mesh stretched over the frame. However, natural wood is much stronger, more beautiful and more reliable.

The boards can be connected into a furniture board, attached close to each other or at some distance - it depends on your idea and on the purpose of the gate. If the boards will be fastened with a gap, they must be the same width, the distance between them must also be the same. You can use a template for this.

Before attaching to the frame, the boards are treated with antiseptics and insecticidal agents. Then they are attached to the frame with screws or nails.

Do-it-yourself wooden gates can be made of any height. At the top, you can add a decorative grille.

Various decorations can be attached to the skin, for example, carved wooden or forged ones.

Process the tree after the installation of the valves. To do this, the surface is ground, all shells and fallen knots are covered with putty on wood. After the putty has dried, the gates are sanded again - first with fine sandpaper, and then with fine sandpaper.

The wood is then tinted and sanded again. Then a primer is applied.

After the primer dries, the first coat of varnish is applied, and when it dries, the second.

Attention! For processing, only varnish for outdoor use is used, pay attention to this when buying.

If you want to make a gate with forging, the decorations are attached after the second layer of varnish has dried. For strength, the joints of metal and wood are coated with sealant. For a longer service life of wooden gates, they are covered with drying oil and oil paint.

They hang the gate on lancet loops - they are more reliable. The sashes must be located at a distance of at least 5 cm from the ground - then snow and ice in winter will not prevent them from opening and closing.

Gate

The gate is made according to the same principles as the gate leaves. It is smaller and lighter, so the frame for it can be fastened with metal corners. The frame is tried on to the opening, and if it freely enters it, it is sheathed with boards or a picket fence. Then the upper part of the boards is cut with a jigsaw to the required length. After that, the gate is hung on hinges.

Antique gate

The basic design of the gate was described above, on its basis you can come up with your own options, including making gates antique or in a different style. Antique wooden gate photo can be seen below. The old style implies the presence of forged jewelry and rather massive forms. For the manufacture of gates, high-quality pine timber with a thickness of 11-13 cm is used, the finished structure is covered with drying oil or varnish.

Any owner of a private house, whether it is a country house or a building for permanent residence, upon completion of construction, is faced with the task of installing a gate. In fact, the gates offered on the modern construction market, the photos of which can be seen in the article, are able to satisfy any practical and aesthetic needs.

The choice of design is a responsible task, since its purpose is not only to protect the site from intruders. Properly selected gates for a private house, a photo version of which can be seen below, are an adornment of the entire architectural ensemble and its face. After all, they create the first impression of the owner. Therefore, when resolving the issue, one should proceed, on the one hand, from the point of view of the practicality of the material used, and on the other hand, from design considerations. It is important that the design does not violate the overall harmony. Even beautiful gates and wickets themselves can look ridiculous if they are stylistically inadequate for the house, other buildings and the fence.

When deciding on the installation of the gate, first of all, it is necessary to decide on the material.

materials

Wood

Wooden gates for a private house, the photos of which you will see below, are a very popular solution. The reason for this is a number of advantages that a tree has. These include:

  1. Environmental safety of the material.
  2. The ease of installation of the structure and the ability to perform such work on your own, without the help of professionals.
  3. Relative ease of construction.
  4. The ability to do without expensive and complex equipment during installation.

The main disadvantage of natural wood structures is their flammability. Therefore, they are unsafe in terms of fire. In addition, such structures require regular procedures to ensure their safety, including:

  1. Painting and repair.
  2. Treatment with antiseptic compounds to prevent rotting and fungal infection.

The disadvantage is the difference in weight that occurs when changing from dry to rainy weather due to the ability of wood to absorb moisture. The result may be their deformation.

Decking

Gate options for a private house include structures made of corrugated board. This material is profiled galvanized steel sheets. Fences and gates for a private house, made of corrugated board, are a widespread design. The reason for this is the numerous advantages that this material has. These include:

  • the ability to choose any color to your taste;
  • relatively low cost;
  • ease of installation;
  • small mass;
  • durability;
  • no need for constant care;
  • numerous design options.

The main disadvantage of structures made of this material is their lack of sophistication in terms of aesthetic natures. However, having shown imagination, you can choose an interesting color, as well as decorate the gate in an original way around the perimeter. As a result, the gate for the house, the photo of which you will see below, will look very attractive.

Euro picket fence

It is a variation of the previous material and is a metal profiled strip with a polymer coating. Metal fence structures have an aesthetic and modern look.

forged metal

Forging allows you to create exceptionally beautiful gates, photo options for such gates are presented below - and each of them can be safely called a work of art. The disadvantage of this solution is its high cost. Only fairly wealthy owners of private houses can afford the installation of a forged structure. At the same time, forged gates and gates, photos of which you will see below, have the following number of advantages:

  • durability;
  • high level of strength and wear resistance;
  • aesthetic appeal;
  • the possibility of manufacturing gates on an individual order;
  • compatibility with any other materials;
  • providing an overview.

However, some people perceive the latter advantage as a disadvantage. In this case, to hide the situation in the yard from the eyes of passers-by, you can attach polycarbonate sheets to the gate.

The downside is the large mass, which requires pouring a solid foundation and installing heavy poles during installation.

In addition to wood and metal, polymeric materials can also be used: vinyl and slate.

Varieties

After the choice of material has been made, the next step is to select the type of construction. What are the types of gates for a private house?

The entrance gate to a private house, the photos of which are below, can be:

  • sliding;
  • swing;
  • retractable;
  • lifting;
  • mechanical.

Today, two varieties are most common - swing and sliding.

Swing structures

These gates, pictures of which can be found on the Internet, are perhaps the most ancient solution. Their design is extremely simple. They are two wings, which are attached to the supporting pillars with the help of strong hinges. Their advantages are as follows:

  • ease of installation;
  • ease of maintenance.

The main disadvantage is the availability of space for their opening. In addition, stoppers must be provided, since during strong winds the sashes can damage the body of an incoming vehicle.

Sliding

The main advantage of this design is that no space is required for opening. However, there are also disadvantages, namely:

  1. Difficulty of installation.
  2. The need for more care due to the heavy load on small parts.
  3. Prone to failure due to factors such as rust and dust.

Style and design

What can be the design of the gates and gates of a private house, the photo below will show you clearly. Currently, there are a variety of design solutions that allow you to choose beautiful gates for a private house, the photos of which are presented in the article. However, for those who are deciding which gate to choose for their home, the photo gallery at the end of the article will help determine the direction of the search for a solution.

Gate

Speaking of gates, one cannot ignore the issue of the gate. Of course, the gate is a necessary structural element, since it is very inconvenient to open the gate at the entrance to the site every time.

What considerations should be taken into account when installing a gate? Here it is also worth first deciding on the material. It would be quite natural and logical to use the same material for the gate as for the gate. Otherwise, the stylistic harmony of the design will be violated. In addition, the purchase of different materials can create additional costs.

Where is the best place to make a wicket? The best place for a gate is next to the gate. A good solution is to use the same support posts to install the gate. This eliminates the need for an additional support column, which speeds up the installation process.

The most popular type of gates are classic swing gates. Some homeowners install sliding gates. However, due to the complexity of manufacturing, such a design is extremely rare.

Automatic system

For those owners of private houses who are fans of convenience and comfort, such a modern solution as an entrance gate in a private house is suitable, photo examples of which you will see below. Their feature is that they are equipped with an electric drive and operate in automatic mode. All they need is an electric motor of relatively low power and simple electronics.

Electric gates allow the owner to open and close them while in the house or in the car. Currently, there are designs equipped with sensors tuned to the signal of the owner's machine, and they themselves open or close when it is applied.

As a rule, the electric drive is installed on sliding gates. Automation of the opening and closing of swing structures is expensive, and therefore rarely used.

Wooden gates: beautiful, reliable and affordable (23 photos)

Contact by mail

Installing reliable gates on the site is just as important as building a good house, because the gates both protect your household and perform a decorative function, because the first thing people see when they drive up to your house is the gate. If you want to find the perfect combination of price and quality, choose wooden gates. They look beautiful and with proper care, will last a very long time.

What material to choose?

Wooden gates can be made from:

  • pines;
  • alder;
  • larches;
  • birch;
  • maple;
  • oak.

Each of these types of wood has its own advantages and disadvantages. If possible, the gates are recommended to be made from coniferous trees. They contain resin, which prevents the wood from rotting and makes it durable. Natural resin is a good prevention against fungus, mold and insect pests.

Wooden gates and gates are often made from pine. This wood is very durable, but the main thing is that there are almost no branches on it. Pine is easy to process and make blanks of the right size from it. The only thing is, if you want to make antique wooden gates, you will have to give up pine. This tree is harder to paint than the others. The paint lays unevenly on the surface, and the design of the wooden gate is not what it was originally intended to be.

Spruce has a uniform beautiful color, so the gates made from it can be simply opened with varnish. Forged wooden gates are often made from pine, because the decorative metal elements look perfect against this tree. You can also make a gate from pine: it will be strong and light at the same time. For a house, pine doors will be an ideal solution, but it’s worth considering whether to make country street gates out of them, because this wood has high porosity: during heavy rains, it quickly swells and begins to rot.

Larch gates will look good. This wood is very durable and strong. It has a less porous structure, so it does not rot as quickly. Beautiful larch wooden gates are usually varnished. This wood is beautiful enough to be painted with oil paint.

Deciduous wood is less popular with manufacturers. Alder, maple, birch are easy to process, they almost do not dry out, but have low moisture resistance. After a rainy autumn and a snowy winter, the gate can become deformed and begin to rot. You can install wooden gates in the country house made of oak. This wood contains special substances that prevent rotting and mold formation. She is strong and very beautiful. Oak has two disadvantages: it is expensive and difficult to process.

It is necessary to decide not only on the type of wood, but also on the type of gate that will be in the country. The most common types of gates today are:

  • sliding;
  • swing;
  • sectional.

The first two are budget options. Sectional doors are more expensive and require experience and special tools to install.

Installing swing gates

The simplest and most affordable are swing gates. They are suitable for the suburban area, and for a country house. The width of such gates is about four meters, and the height is determined based on the height of the entire fence.

All components of the gate must be ordered at the factory. As a rule, they are a thick metal frame to which wooden boards are attached. Installation of the gate begins with digging in steel poles, which should be about half a meter higher than the main leaves. When the pillars are dug in, gate leaves are hung on the hinges.

If you want to save money, you can find information on how to make a wooden gate yourself. If you make wooden gates with your own hands, do not forget that there should be a polyurethane visor above them. Such a visor will protect the ends of the leaves from moisture, which means that the gate will last longer, but place it taking into account that a truck with a high body can drive into the yard, so such a visor for wooden swing gates should be at least 3.5 meters.

Swing gates can have leaves of the same size, or there can be a leaf and a gate. It will be very convenient to park the car in the yard, and enter and exit using the gate. Wooden gates on a metal frame are suitable for installation at the entrance, because they are strong and reliable. Wooden gates to the garage may not have this frame; ordinary picket gates, which are directed to thick guide beams, are suitable here.

Sliding gate to save space

Swing gates require additional space to open. If not, you can install wooden sliding gates. Without special tools and experience, it is unlikely that you will be able to make such gates from wood with your own hands. They are a metal frame into which a picket fence is inserted. This frame rides on metal rails installed along the fence. These gates can be opened with one movement of the hand, but not in all areas they can be installed: on the right or on the left, the fence must have a width equal to the width of the gate leaf.

If you do not know how to make a gate of this type, it is better not to undertake their manufacture at all. Only a person with extensive experience can build brick pillars for such gates and install all this complex mechanism. Wooden garage doors also cannot be of this type, because there will simply be nowhere for the canvas to drive in.

Sectional doors

These options are more expensive, and only professionals can install them. Garage doors made of wood can be not only hinged, but also sectional. They consist of thin panels that are connected by hinges. With one movement, the gate rises and gathers at the top, just as easily they close.

Wooden sectional doors are often installed in underground garages. They are very convenient: they are easily set in motion, hermetically close the room, when assembled they do not take up much space.

However, these gates also have disadvantages. They are much more expensive than swing and sliding. These gates are difficult to mount, and if used incorrectly, the hinge mechanism can quickly fail. These gates should only be attached to a concrete wall - they cannot be installed in a room with plasterboard walls or in a garage made of thin metal.

We decorate the gate

The easiest way to decorate the gate is to coat it with a varnish of a noble shade or paint of your favorite color. You can make a Provence-style gate: paint it and make it up with sandpaper and blue vitriol, but if the gate is painted and not restored, over time they will grow old to the desired state themselves.

If there is a financial opportunity, you can spend money and install wooden gates with forging elements. Even if you attach small decorative elements, the gate will look different. You can make forged hinges, handles, bolts - with them the gates and gates will have a completely different look, or you can order forged gates with wood. They are expensive, but with them your household will look like a real medieval castle.

Gates with wooden inserts are sometimes decorated with carvings. This is a small manual work that a rare master can do. If you want carved gates for yourself, they should not be made of aspen or alder, but of mahogany. Otherwise, the work will cost more than a gate with a gate.

Wooden gates are a good option for those who are looking for the perfect combination of price and quality. They look very presentable and are cheaper than metal ones. If you want wooden gates to serve you for many years, take care of them. To do this, they must be treated with insect impregnations at least once every six years, renew the layer of paint and varnish, and lubricate all iron mechanisms with oil.

Fencing is one of the most important attributes that sets a certain aesthetic tone for the entire landscape design of the site. The decoration of the gate and the general style of the fence tells passers-by about the taste of the owners, their material wealth, and a certain social status. It is not surprising that many owners of suburban locations and private sectors within the city are trying to make gates and fencing around the house not only safe, but also exclusive.

What can be wickets and gates for a private house

Structural decisions regarding the fence or gate have a direct impact on the design of the fence as a whole. There are the following types:

  1. The blank canvas of the gates and gates is preferred by the owners of the private sector, leading a closed lifestyle. Options for fences made of wood, metal and corrugated board can be made exclusive and interesting. To do this, it is enough to supplement the whole canvas with forging fragments, carvings and openwork details. Another chic option is an emphasis on unusual support pillars;
  2. The design of the through type is represented by forged metal products. Forging design is always individual. Simpler options are welded lattice structures and mesh. Less often, fragments of corrugated board or wooden elements are used to improve the supporting qualities of the fence;
  3. Mixed options are the most optimal combination of the previous two formats of gates and gates for a private house. Usually the lower part of the fence is deaf, hiding from prying eyes most of what is happening on the site. The upper segments are translucent, openwork forms. Most often, this is a simple mesh or a more respectable forged design.

Deaf forged gates with polycarbonate

There is another option, but it is more practical than any decorative qualities. Experts recommend making the lowest segment of the blind gate open. This is necessary for the normal ventilation of the space and green spaces around the house.

Deaf metal gates of a private house

If the width of the entrance does not allow the installation of a gate and a wicket at the same time, these elements are combined with each other. The opening for the wicket is cut directly into the railing. This technique can also be advantageously beaten in terms of design.

Materials as the basis for decor

When choosing elements for the future fencing of the site and the house, the owners first of all take into account how strong, durable and reliable the structure will be. Then the aesthetic qualities of the future fence are taken into account.

Many people forget about an important nuance: fences should not only look organic within a particular site, but also harmoniously coexist with other fences that are located nearby. Regarding the material and design features, there are several global categories.

Classic wood designs

A fence with a gate can be both deaf and through. Wooden fences organically look with brick or massive stone pillars. Such a fence can be decorated with forging and openwork metal weaving. Effectively, the fence is combined in suburban areas with large cottages or small log houses.

The gate itself can be made from a narrow picket fence or thin wooden slats. They are connected according to the type of lattice or supplemented with the same metal forging. Ideally, if a wooden gazebo is located in the yard. Thus, all elements look organic, and the design looks holistic.

Decking and other unusual solutions

Structures made of aluminum, corrugated board, picket fence and other non-standard materials are gaining more and more popularity. Unusualness and originality lies in the fact that they try to combine textures and materials in the most unexpected way.

For example, stone or brickwork is combined with polycarbonate. The texture of the wood is emphasized with the help of ornate metal patterns. Massive stone pillars are complemented by a light mesh.

How to make wooden gates - wooden gates (+ photos, diagrams)

The arrangement of a reliable garage ensures not only the safety of the car, but also prevents intruders from entering the vehicle. Each car owner strives to have his own garage, since in big cities many cars spend the night in the open, being exposed to the harmful effects of the environment and being the object of increased attention from scammers. For the owners of country houses and summer cottages, the task of erecting the named building is one of the first lines in the list of priority events. But the excessively high cost of manufacturing this design in some cases discourages any desire to implement the plan. Significantly reduce the cost of building a garage will allow the use of wood and the manufacture of some structural elements with your own hands. Gates are an integral part of any building of this type. For their high-quality construction, it is necessary to familiarize yourself with how to make wooden gates on your own without involving the labor of specialists.

Benefits of using wood

The main advantages of this material are:

  • Availability and reasonable price. You can easily buy wood products of the required grade and required dimensions at a hardware store or a specialized company. The price policy in comparison with metal is much lower.
  • Ease of processing and installation. Without much difficulty, anyone can do the preparation of the named material with their own hands. Whereas the processing of metal products will require the use of expensive equipment: an angle grinder, welding equipment, etc.
  • Durability and reliability. With planned regular maintenance, a wooden entrance structure can last a long time. Compared to metal, the wooden surface is not subject to rust, but requires periodic treatment with special compounds. If one of the sides of the canvas is damaged, it is really possible to replace old boards with new ones in a matter of hours.

Depending on the tastes and preferences of each owner, any type of gate can be made: a sliding type or a variant with a lifting device.

The most simple and versatile type are swing gates. The manufacturing technology of this element is intuitive and does not require special building skills from the master.

The main task is to take into account all the subtleties and important features, as well as to carry out high-quality measurements and wood processing.

Preparatory work

Before preparing the required material and tools, you should draw up a diagram of the future design and accurately calculate its location. Having finished with these points, it is worth starting to measure the entrance opening. To increase the visibility, it would be useful to use the existing sketch and adjust all the values to your option.

Tool for the job

Drawing up a detailed sketch will allow you to better navigate the number of consumables and components. The construction of the structure involves the use and preparation of the following tools and materials:

  • timber or metal profile 50 × 50 mm;
  • wooden boards having a width of 100 mm and a thickness of 25 mm;
  • metal hanging loops;
  • hacksaw;
  • roulette;
  • Bulgarian;
  • building level;
  • steel corners;
  • drill with a set of drills and bits;
  • chisel;
  • sandpaper;
  • primer;
  • processing compounds;
  • set of brushes.

In the manufacture of wooden garage doors, special supports must be prepared in advance. If they are not ready yet, then two wooden beams or logs will be required for their manufacture.

Wooden garage door installation

We prepare holes for them with a depth of at least 1.2–1.5 m. When erecting any supporting structure, a simple rule applies: the deeper the pillars are located, the more stable and reliable the gate will be. We cut the blanks to the required height, taking into account the part of the support that will be in the ground. To increase the strength, it would be useful to further strengthen the foundation of future supporting pillars by filling the bottom of the recesses with a small amount of crushed stone of the 5 × 20 fraction and ramming the resulting substrate.

To prevent premature destruction of wooden supports, it is necessary to treat the places that will be underground with a special water-repellent mastic or resin.

Pole installation

Next, we install the pillars, fix the vertical position according to the building level and fill the recesses with a concrete or cement mixture. In addition, to give greater practicality and aesthetics, concreted places can be overlaid with large stones or bricks.

Mounting

Having completed all the preparatory procedures, we proceed to the manufacture of the structure itself.

frame

In accordance with the dimensions of the entrance opening, we cut the wooden beam to the required values \u200b\u200band lay it out on a flat place so that we get a rectangle or square, depending on the type of gate.

We check the horizontality and verticality of the laid out beams, after which we drill holes in the corner joints and fasten the structure with self-tapping screws or dowels. It would be useful to reinforce the corners and the center of the frame with steel corners and cross beams, respectively. The ends of the last products are cut at an angle of 45º, placed crosswise and fixed with self-tapping screws.

Metal profile pipes can also be used as the basis for the future frame, however, welding equipment will be required for manufacturing.

Finishing

The next event is the manufacture and surface treatment of cladding elements. Depending on the chosen material and the size of the doors, we cut the required number of boards. As a rule, pine is used for sheathing, since wooden products made from it have a small specific gravity and are most protected from the harmful effects of environmental factors.

The cladding board is placed close to each other and fixed with self-tapping screws to the frame. Upon completion, all irregularities are trimmed and processed with a grinder or fine sandpaper.

To increase the density of fit to the frame and maintain the temperature in the garage, the edges of the wings can be sheathed with insulation.

Hinge installation and sash fastening

Having prepared the gate leaves, we proceed to the installation of metal hinges. In the case of attachment to a frame structure, the hinged parts are welded directly onto the frame, and in the case of attachment to wooden bases, onto support posts. To determine the optimal location, it is necessary to retreat from the upper and lower boundaries of the support a distance equal to ¼ of the total height of the pillars and mark the place. Then fix the hinges on the poles and hang the sashes.

Surface treatment

The gate is almost ready, it remains only to prime and cover the surface with antiseptics. Having given the necessary time for drying, we proceed to the placement of accessories: handles, locks and bolts. To give a noble look, the gate can later be decorated with various forged elements.

Reliable bolts

They can be in the form of L-shaped metal rods located on the wings. For their operation, it is necessary to place two small pieces of pipe with a diameter ensuring the free movement of the rod in the intended places of entry into the ground, and also to make a platform on each leaf for fixing the handle of the fastener in the raised state.

Wooden fence hinges

The procedure for erecting a wooden gate with your own hands is a simple event and accessible to the implementation of each person. As with any construction work, in order to achieve all the goals, it is necessary to strictly follow the advice of specialists, take accurate measurements and use high-quality material. The implementation of all these points, together with planned periodic maintenance, will ensure the reliable functioning of the entrance gate for many years.

Village Gate Home

village gate photo

What does the village gate look like? By the way, it is quite difficult to give an example of a village gate, if only because the concept of a village and the idea of village residents about what kind of gate they themselves should have changed greatly. Today, when the Internet "has reached" the most remote corners of the rural wilderness, it turned out that the traditional ideas about rural residents as "hopeless" provincials living "many years ago" lagging behind the rapidly changing trends of modern construction are, to put it mildly, a little outdated. The average villager gained access via the Internet and the opportunity to easily and quickly get acquainted with the "latest fashion trends" and the features of the manufacturing technology of the most modern gates. This is especially true for artistic forging. There are a lot of sites where you can lay out and see beautiful examples of elite gates, gates with forging elements and interesting simple gates that you can easily make with your own hands. And regular acquaintance with photographs of the gate, wittingly or not, gives rise to a completely good taste for artistic forging and the desire to install beautiful rural gates in one's house in the village. Only the model for the village gates will no longer be the fantasy of a blacksmith in the village, who has seen nothing but a horseshoe and a chopper, but the work of a serious designer of artistic forging from a big city, who is used to “satisfying a very sophisticated demand”, including for elite products. The technology of artistic gate forging has such a nice feature that seeing a successful sketch in front of you, or rather a photograph of the finished gate, in any forge, an experienced master blacksmith will be able to reproduce the favorite forging pattern for the gate in the village. Not to copy - copying forging always causes almost insurmountable problems, but to rework creatively, adjusting the parts and elements to suit your own skills in the forge with forged metal. Therefore, with modern village gates, a situation has developed when the customers of gates for a private house in the village, in the village, have the opportunity to choose very beautiful gates, and the village blacksmith can offer to implement almost any complex and interesting forging sketch for the gate. What actually happens in practice. Let's see photos, options and samples of modern beautiful village gates.

Despite the fact that a modern house in the village in the photo differs little from an ordinary private house, nevertheless, there is a certain “stylistic chic” to make village gates in the rustic style of artistic forging, using some household motifs and specific decorative elements for this, the use of which is especially appropriate in the countryside. Forged metal gates in a rural style in the photo are decorated with a forging pattern in which there is a small wattle fence or a fence made of metal rods imitating real twigs, for small front gardens and hedges in the village, forged sunflowers on the gate immediately give them a very rustic look, maybe making the gate more Ukrainian style. The wrought-iron rooster on the gate is seated on a fence and painted with blacksmith's patina to look like copper with red fragments. The forged wheel on the gate immediately suggests that there may be a cart in the courtyard of a village house. A large and sprawling tree on the gate is also forged metal, iron flowers complement the entire forging sketch for the gate, creating a clearer floral ornament and decorating the canvas of transparent lattice gates on the fence of a village house. Thanks to the beautiful forging on the village gates, behind the "aesthetics" it somehow becomes not noticeable that these are actually very modern sliding automatic gates of a private house in the village. The painting of the village gates with artistic forging is done in several colors, in addition to the usual and convenient chocolate (brown) color of the main painting, in the picture many details are also painted with copper patina, forged sunflowers are tinted with yellow, some of the leaves of the iron tree are painted with green patina, and the wrought-iron rooster in the pattern of the gate decoration is partly painted with red paint. It would seem that such a beautiful combination of colors in the painting of metal gates could give a too colorful picture. However, due to the fact that only those elements of forging that have the same color “in their natural” state were painted with different colors of paint, the result was not colorful, but very picturesque, panoramic gates. A very good choice for the design of village gates should be considered that they are made transparent, lattice. This also adds more naturalness to the rural style of forging and organically fits the beautiful village gate with the characteristic landscape of the village. Alluding to good neighborly, open and positive relations between residents in the village. Creating the impression of a leisurely and prosperous course of life in a village house with a farm, a vegetable garden, a front garden. It seems to me that such a pattern of artistic forging fits the village gate perfectly. Moreover, the decorative metal elements used to decorate the gates of a private house with forging can easily and again naturally be used for other structures. For example, it is clear that there is no need to puzzle over how to decorate a fence in a village. For the design and construction of a fence for a rural house in the village, it is enough to simply continue the style, the direction of artistic forging chosen in the manufacture of wrought iron fence gates. The same forged front garden, a metal fence, beautiful iron sunflowers, wrought wood and even an artistic forging rooster, all this can perfectly fit and decorate the original fence for a village house.

It is not always convenient to make transparent gates in the village. Yes, the customs and habits of rural residents are much simpler than those of the townspeople, but today the fashion for blind gates has also come to the village. A high brick fence, in itself, dictates to us an opaque blind gate. However, such swinging village gates can and should be made in a rural style. A tried and tested method, time-tested, is to include stylized decorative elements in the forging pattern on the gate, of the same rustic, everyday style. We look at the photo - beautiful village gates made of wood with artistic forging. Beautiful gate made of wooden boards, deliberately rough processed to stylize the product, like an old village gate, forged strip, horseshoes on the gate and again cartwheels to decorate the gate in a rural style. All artistic forging accessories for the gates of a village house are carefully thought out so as to give the impression of a swing gate that has been used for a long time and has been repeatedly repaired. Beautiful forged handles help to open and close the gate leaves, and the deliberate asymmetry of cutouts, windows and bends of the upper part of the gate leaf only enhance the overall impression. The gate next to the gate of a private house is made by hand in the same style as the gate. This is a natural and justified decision. For all the seeming rudeness and "clumsiness" of manufacture, the swing gates work perfectly, open well, and their installation on the fence of a village house is technologically correct. Without "discounts" for a rural customer. The cost of a village gate is the price of an exclusive forged product. There are not many art forging workshops in Dnepropetrovsk that could fulfill such an order and make village gates of this level of decorative art. But, the task is rather unusual than insoluble difficult. In a rural forge, a blacksmith in the village, having a bunch of wooden boards at hand, old cart wheels, can independently, with his own hands, slowly, using the basic idea of decorative decoration with forging and old wood, make a similar gate for a private house.

beautiful village gate photo

Above, we looked at examples of village gates that clearly fall into the category of very beautiful exclusive forging products. Author's gates in the village may not be needed by everyone, moreover, author's works of artistic forging are not clear to everyone. Especially considering the price of the gate, obviously too big for the village. Much more often, they prefer to make beautiful village gates with their own hands, using simpler projects, with the usual forging elements: hinges, overlays, horseshoes, forged strip. The fact that village gates are more often made of wood than deaf metal gates made of iron sheet is also understandable. Wood, boards are both a more suitable material in terms of rural style for gates, and a more accessible material in the countryside, where life is often associated with various products made of natural wood. Again, in the village there are traditionally many people who have the skills of working as a carpenter with their own hands and it is natural for them to use such familiar methods of work to make homemade village gates. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… ………………………………………………………………….

beautiful village gate photo

You can make simpler village gates with your own hands, using a certain minimum of artistic forging elements, sufficient to decorate an economy class gate. The simpler the village gate becomes, the easier it is to make it yourself, and the cheaper the cost of the gate for a house in the village. Although, of course, simple drawings for gates lose their bright individuality, and their style, although clearly visible, appears somehow more formally, without zest. This is not bad, the economy class gates should be like that. But if possible, you should strive to make the most beautiful gates with your own hands, if only because they will repay you for the time and effort invested in that they will delight you for many years and may cause white envy of your neighbors. Which did not dare to take such a step, managing the cheapest village gates for a private house. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… ……………………………………………………………………

Simple village gate photo

The cheapest village gates should be considered primarily as functional, reliable, easy to install and do not create problems in operation. If we apply the usual classification to the cheapest village gates, then in fact they are technical gates for the village. They do not impose any aesthetic requirements on them - they are a rational and inexpensive wood product. Wooden gate boards are generally considered to have some artistic value in themselves, due to the color of the wood and the texture of the wooden surface. I would not attach much importance to these arguments. Wooden village gates without forging - do not look like a beautiful product and it is better to refrain from installing them on the facade of the house, or as the central entrance gate on the fence. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… ………………………………………………………………………

Wooden village gate photo

For a solid village house or estate, suitable beautiful entrance gates are also needed. If we do not “change” the chosen direction and look again at examples of wooden entrance gates, then I can offer you an interesting photo - this is a wooden gate without a metal frame. That is, this is a classic design of wooden gates, which is exactly what old wooden gates were made of. There is forged metal in the design of the village gate, but it does not play the role of an iron frame sheathed on the gate with wooden boards. Even the hinges on the rustic-style wooden gates are not welded, but bolted to the gate leaves. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… …………………………………………………………………..

Village gate with wood carvings

Traditionally, artistic carving is often used to decorate village houses made of wood. It is reasonable and understandable that the craftsmen, accustomed to working with wood and making various carved products, did not ignore such a “point of application of their forces” as a gate. What happened as a result? Homemade beautiful carved gates for an honest house in the countryside. Perhaps such a gate would not look very appropriate on a city street, but carving is perfect for beautiful village gates. There was also a place for forged metal. Two metal cats settled on the visor above the wooden gate - figures made of iron sheet, made according to the original drawing. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… …………………………………………………………………..

Emphatically rural stylization of artistic forging in the manufacture of gates is not necessary, moreover, not everyone likes it. There are also purely design reasons for this. If a village house is built in the same way as the most ordinary private house and does not carry a “rural imprint”. That is, the estate looks more like a country cottage, then the entrance gate on the fence around the house in the village may not need to be overly stylized as an old rural product. And to make a gate with your own hands is completely modern, beautiful forged from a metal sheet. Just choose the right pattern for the overlay on the iron gate for a private house in the village. This is a certain compromise - forged gates are obtained, which could equally well be installed on a house in the village and, in some cases, on a private house in the city. A good definition of the gate in this case is the gate of the estate. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… ………………………………………………………………………

Forged village gates from a metal sheet photo

Another example of a forged village gate for a manor is the already well-known stylization of metal gates under the old ones. Or, as we say, antique wrought iron gates. The degree of stylization in the manufacture of forged gates for a house in the countryside is rather arbitrary here. Only the place of installation makes them rustic. If they are installed in a village, on a good house, like a gate for a manor, then such a forged product will certainly emphasize the solidity, solidity and life success of the owner of the house in the village. But you need to understand that this is not forging in a rural style, but classic forging "antique". Some typical rural, rustic motifs are not visible here in the pattern of swing gates. For the manufacture of a forged overlay, an iron strip with notches was used, the overlaps of the strips on the door leaf are additionally decorated with large-sized forged rivets - these are decorative elements. Forged rivets are included in the design of the lining on the gate made of sheet metal, but are not necessary fasteners. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… …………………………………………………………………..

However, this does not mean that forged rivets cannot serve their intended purpose at all. You can make simple and inexpensive village gates with your own hands, decorating them yourself with forged rivets, which will serve as an element of decor and will fulfill “their genetic duties”. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… ……………………………………………………………………………

Village gate made of wood photo

If the metal sheet is not suitable for you and the iron village gates seem to you clearly not the product that you would like to see on a private house in the village. But at the same time, you like the style of antique forging for gates and in general you gravitate toward classic gates with strict artistic forging. You can replace the design of the gate - do-it-yourself village gates made of wood, on a metal frame, sheathed with a wooden board. And to decorate them, use antique-style forging, very similar to the pattern that we have already seen on the village gates made of metal sheet. The impression of a beautiful gate on a rural house will be completely different. These gates may not be called original, but solidity and rustic styling are clearly present. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… ……………………………………………………………………

Or you can see a simpler example of a homemade village gate, they can be recommended to those who want to make a gate for a private house in the village with their own hands.

Gates and fences in the Russian style

Siberian gates as an architectural ensemble of folk architecture.

The device of the gate in the estates of the villages of Western Siberia and Altai is no less bright page of folk architecture than the hut itself. Gates are sometimes significant architectural structures, where the master has invested all his knowledge and professional skill. Gates in a sense are the "face" of the estate, an indicator of the well-being of the owners of the yard. And it must be said that the Siberian artisans did not bypass this detail, sometimes giving it great expressiveness and strength.

Gates in wooden architecture were given special importance. Here you can see the origins of the distant past of purely folk art, especially rich and original in the North and Siberia. Siberian wooden architecture had many distinctive features, and the wooden gates of rural areas and cities are especially interesting and make one involuntarily talk about themselves not only in terms of the need for an aesthetic sense, but also about their economic validity in the life of the Siberian population. The gate, like the whole appearance of the building, strictly follows a certain canon of construction, which changes only due to the special influences of the era. They are very rarely influenced by the ever-changing and always ephemeral fashion. It can be said directly that the gates firmly preserve, like iconography, their canon of architecture.

It can be argued that for three and a half centuries, gate architecture has not gone beyond three types that successively emerged one from the other, and in Siberia all three types of gates have been preserved, sometimes standing in the same quarter. These are the gate types: "complete", "incomplete" and "simplified". In order for us to better understand the structure of the gate ensemble, we need to explain the meaning of its elements.

Vereya - a pillar dug into the ground and serving as the basis of the gate. There are four, three or two such faiths, depending on the completeness of the gate ensemble.

Okhlyabina - a jumper between the ropes at the top, aims to eliminate the staggering of the upper parts of the ropes and their discrepancy between themselves.

Vorotina - a gate leaf hanging through canopies on a rope, the gate opens and closes the gap between the ropes, the gates are single- and double-leaf.

During this period, the gate included in the gate ensemble changed a number of places in the gate and, in isolation from them, went into the porch or fence, replacing the gate itself.

Although there are few types of gates, this does not mean that the builder's imagination was limited in this regard. On the contrary, having once established a scheme in designing the gate, the architect found the means and possibilities to give the most diverse architectural solutions in this permanent canon. This once again speaks of the richness of the carpenter's creative possibilities. Having a small range of topics, the builder could inexhaustibly improvise and invent new forms - this was up to the Russian people.

Decorative solutions in the design of the Siberian gates are quite diverse. In some cases, the gates are processed with relief carvings of geometric ornament in large elements, to match the thick pillars - supports, which in the lower part - the butt - remain unprocessed and give special stability to the gate.
In the villages of Altai, a fairly common method of decorating the “tops” is to decorate the gates with colored tin, stuffed on wooden linings with blacksmith nails with wide hats in a certain rhythmic order, which gives a tangible decorative effect.

In the case of a gate with a gable roof and a cornice, examples of a very rich, rich design of the latter with convex relief carving are not uncommon. The cornice in these cases is strongly developed, looks very elegant under a simple gable roof and gives a certain picturesqueness to the whole solution.

The panels of the gates themselves were most often not processed at all. Arranged from good tesins with diagonal or triangular embroidery, they did not seem to need additional decorations. In newer constructions, the panels were processed with laid on or edging with ornamental motifs in the form of stylized flowers, a sun with rays, rosettes, flowerpots, etc. A very original solution could be observed in the area of the former Tomsk province, where the gate gave the impression of huge "mushrooms" that accidentally grew at the entrance to the estate.

The gates, as a certain economic part of the estate, have their origins in the Siberian North in the fence and gates of fortifications, the so-called "fortifications". The city wall of these prisons is a solid chopped cages, often open inside the fortification, without an inner wall. These log cabins were covered from above with a roof from rain and snow.

In the wall, in addition to the side towers, there were middle towers, in which a passage gate was made, hence the name "travel tower". Depending on the number of parts that make up the gate, they are divided into "complete", "incomplete", "simplified". "Full" gates have two gates, symmetrically located on both sides of the gate. One gate - opening, which is closer to the house, and the other - "deaf", distant. In the "deaf" gate, in its niche, a horizontal board for sitting is built in - this is a "shop for two". For sitting on the street in general, as is customary in Siberia, there is a longer bench near the fence between the house and the opening gate.

“Incomplete” gates have only one gate that opens to the house and, of course, without a bench. The reduction is due to a blind gate. This reduction greatly disrupts the overall appearance of the gate, making it taller.

“Simplified” gates are gates without wickets on the sides. Such stubby gates are a sign of inattention to the gate ensemble. The reason, of course, is not in the rationalization of the gate structure, but in saving money and time. In further degradation, this will lead to the passage of the gate into the fence or porch of the house, and the gate, having become unnecessary, will be crossed out of the estate.

What is a gate in a fence? In essence, it is difficult to say, looking at such a gate, where it comes from, what type of gate this chip is from. It does not bear traces of documentation that fixes its origin. There is no cornice on it, there is no richness of the overheated space. So, in connection with the change in the architectural ensemble, the gate is hidden in the fence.

A special place is occupied by the gates to the cattle yards, vegetable gardens, poskotiny (the gate at the entrance to the village. “... The gates are dissolved, the guests left on horses, on sleighs ...” - with these words, it is wooden, solid, decorated with beautiful carvings that are so suitable to the hospitable Russian character. But they have outlived their time, just as the wall of the Siberian prison from which they came out has outlived it. “There is a time for everything,” we say, bowing from the waist to the glorious outgoing Russian antiquity ...

Time changes a lot ... In connection with new ways of transportation, when the horse begins to be replaced by a machine that is much larger than a sleigh or cart, there is a gradual impoverishment of the gate ensemble.

Transport in the face of the car set new requirements: speed and spaciousness hit the obsolete gates in the old sense of the word. Cars are cramped in the gates of the past, especially with a cargo body hanging from the platform or piled up above it. The new requirement leads to the expansion of the gate to the sides, the gates must move away from each other and make a wide passage.

The question arises by itself, is it possible to do without a gate at all? It goes without saying that it is possible and is already doing without gates with chains, okhlyabina and a gate, but, of course, one cannot do without gates as a place of entry, exit, entry and exit.

Yes, many changes have taken place, but decorating your life, your home is a natural desire for beauty, the Beautiful has formed among the peoples their inalienable culture, their national ornament, which has firmly entered everyday life and is reflected in construction. This adornment of the surrounding space is nothing but a legitimate demand on oneself and self-satisfaction in creativity.

The pride of the creator - builder - owner also participates a lot. To line up worse than others means to show your inability, bad taste and undemandingness. Some consider the internal comfort of an apartment or room sufficient for themselves, and the appearance is a secondary phenomenon or even simply not worth attention. Fortunately, this narcissism only in one's home and ignoring the appearance of one's house, and, consequently, the street as a whole, was not characteristic of our Siberian ancestors. The desire to see the beautiful in the street, and not only inside one's habitual nest, is a legitimate and natural desire.

What will be the new gate type? We do not know, but we must think that they will be given a place of honor in the new construction. The gate is an entrance and an exit, an entrance and an exit, a place of waiting for meetings, a place of shelter from the rain, meeting and seeing off the creator of life - a person, in essence it is the alpha and omega of his daily turn, in which his personal and social aspects of life meet. Its intimate, individual space begins and ends with gates: home and family - all this made them an important place of the estate, because it was not for nothing that wooden architecture so clearly marked their special significance, creating a self-sufficient, bright, architectural gate ensemble in the past.

Village gates photo - how to make beautiful antique carved wooden gates with your own hands

“My house is my fortress,” many owners of private houses believe; supporters of this opinion, as a rule, enclose their territory with a continuous high fence. But such a fence does not look very aesthetically pleasing, despite the fact that a large assortment of modern materials leaves the owner with a wide choice. A blank fence creates a feeling of a closed space, the closeness of the owners of the site. For those who care not to fence themselves off from the world, a wooden fence made using the woodcarving technique will be an excellent solution for marking a personal territory.

carved fence

You can make a wooden fence with your own hands according to samples - it will give your home individuality and will not leave your neighbors and guests indifferent. The house behind the original openwork fence will look especially hospitable, shaping your image as a host. Now forged fences are in great fashion - but the carved fence is in no way inferior to them in beauty. If you want the fence of your site not only to create the illusion of protection from the outside world, but also to be a wonderful decorative decoration - choose a carved fence.

The advantages of such a fence:

  • A carved fence will suit any type of house and any design of a personal plot;
  • A wooden fence is easy to keep clean;
  • If you wish, you can do all the work yourself, wood carving is an interesting creative process.
  • Carved fence is easy to install; this work can also be done by yourself;
  • Carved fences are inexpensive and suitable for anyone;
  • The environmental friendliness of the material used does not cause any harm to the environment;
  • You can experiment with varnishes and paints of different colors and textures on your own to give your fence a personality.

What wood to choose?

The cheapest material is wood-laminated board, or plywood. To work with it, two tools are enough - a hacksaw for metal and a file with fine teeth.

If you want your fence to look expensive and stylish, choose valuable wood as the source material:

  • Trees such as poplar, maple and ash give beautiful patterns when cut;
  • Beech and oak form small specks;
  • Walnut, ash and elm form curved lines similar to sinusoids.

Coniferous trees are well suited for creating lace carvings. Coniferous plywood is cheaper than solid wood, but the result will be almost indistinguishable.

If you settled on a contour carving or a geometric pattern, choose hardwood.

Styles

interesting carving

If you have absolutely no experience in woodworking, but you are determined to make a fence yourself - stop at simple patterns. There are techniques that require expensive equipment, but you need thread options that do not require special knowledge and accumulated experience. Suitable for the following techniques:

  1. Geometric carving. The ornament consists of the simplest geometric shapes. Such work will require quite a lot of time, but even a beginner can do it with a certain perseverance. In this case, you can even do without a special tool - an ordinary sharply sharpened knife will do.
  2. Contour carving. For this type of work, you will need a chisel. The meaning of carving is not to cut through the wooden base, but to cut small indentations in it. As a result, you get a 3D drawing - to enhance this effect, we advise you to paint over the convex places with light paint. The contour technique can also be used in combination with a solid solid fence - then a pre-prepared threaded canvas is fixed on the fence canvas, which is a decorative design element.
  3. Lace carving. Using this technique, you can make a unique artistic fence that resembles lace in a pattern. You can take a power tool or a jigsaw. First, one hole is drilled, a file is inserted into it - and then the entire pattern can be sawn entirely along a pre-drawn contour.

Do-it-yourself carved wooden fence templates

Thread Template

Mounting scheme:

  • Before starting work, we prepare the boards - we grind the bumps, we go through the planer. For light wood species, this is enough, but dark wood, most likely, will also have to be tinted.
  • Let's draw a picture. If you draw well, it will not be difficult for you to create a template for a future fence yourself. If not, it doesn't matter - you can find a lot of image options on the Internet for your future template.
  • When the pattern is completely cut out, the board is polished and sanded again.

Now a carved wooden fence can be installed:

  1. Mark the line along which your fence will be mounted. Install wooden stakes in the corners of the plot, stretch a bright thread from one to the other. Mark the posts - they should all be at the same distance from each other.
  2. A hole 40-70 cm deep is dug at each mark.
  3. Before installing wooden supports - you need to treat them with an antiseptic. After the antiseptic has dried, the pillars are installed in pits and poured with concrete.

When the solution hardens completely, and the pillars stand up "tightly" - jumpers are installed. Without them, the structure will not be as strong. A wooden beam is suitable, which is fastened with self-tapping screws and nails. This is how the frame of your fence is created.

After the frame is completely ready - start mounting your threaded blanks. The final stage is always the processing of the fence with a special coating. It will protect wooden parts from bad weather and all kinds of wood pests. First, walk along your future fence with a primer and then boldly cover the fence with paint or varnish.

Carved wooden fence

A fence made of carved picket fence can be mounted according to all the same rules as a regular wooden fence.

The installation of the fence is carried out in the following sequence:

Hand carved wooden fences

Before transferring the pattern to the base, prepare the wooden canvas. Treat the entire surface with a planer. Dark wood is usually tinted. If you want the surface to shine, use varnish.

Fence carving with an electric jigsaw

The drawing you apply should be clearly visible. For light wood, you can take a black carbon paper, for dark wood, bright colors are suitable. You can not use carbon paper, but simply press hard on the stencil with a pen - traces will remain on the tree.

When carving wood, you must follow the safety precautions:

  1. Remember that all your working tools are incredibly sharp. Even a light touch on the cutting surface can seriously damage the skin. Therefore, you can not check with your finger how well the tool is sharpened.
  2. If you work on a table, your desktop must be 100% stable and should not wobble while working. Make sure the table legs are the same height.
  3. In order to fix the details of your future fence during operation, it is advisable to use special devices.
  4. You need to cut only "from yourself"; the second hand cannot be kept in the plane of work.
  5. Remember that wood shavings can ignite and burst into flames with elemental heating - do not work near heaters.
  6. Your work area should be well lit.
  7. Do not forget that sawdust of some types of trees (for example, yew) is toxic. This material is loved by many carvers. If you are working with yew, clean your work area thoroughly and dispose of all sawdust immediately after work.
  8. Remove from the work area all objects that you can stumble on.
  9. During operation, the first aid kit should be near the cutter.

Treatment

Lacquering

If you want your fence to serve you for a very long time, be sure to treat it with an antiseptic and then paint it. The paint is applied after the antiseptic has completely dried.

Wooden gate - pros and cons

Before you make a wooden gate with your own hands, you need to understand what advantages this material will give, and what are its disadvantages.

Advantages:

  1. Strength and durability - subject to the right breed.
  2. Attractive appearance - you can create a design of any shape and choose the right decorative design.
  3. Affordable price. The bars necessary for assembly can be purchased very inexpensively, and if you use the remaining material after the main construction, then installing the gate will cost almost nothing at all.
  4. Quick and easy assembly - such structures are easy to do with your own hands, even in the absence of professional building skills.
  5. No need for complex equipment and tools.
  6. Ecological purity of materials.

Important! The design possibilities when installing a wooden gate with your own hands are endless. You can paint the product in any color you like or make a painting on it with paints. Carved wooden gates are also very popular today - you will learn how to make them below, as well as interesting “antique” options.

Disadvantages:

  1. Low degree of protection against hacking.
  2. Limited service life - depending on the model chosen, it will be necessary to periodically restore and correct the position of such a gate.
  3. Fire susceptibility.

Important! Such disadvantages necessitate additional processing - antiseptics, fire-resistant compounds. Due to this, the time for creating a gate made of wood increases.

Carved wooden gate - simple ways to create a pattern

A carved gate is a very interesting option, and even a novice master can do it with his own hands.

There are 3 technologies, the distinguishing feature of each of which is the type of pattern.

Geometric

The finished geometric gate is a door leaf, on which there are a large number of various graphic elements:

  • spirals
  • drops
  • lines
  • points
  • rectangles
  • diamonds.

To make such a decorative wooden gate, prepare yourself for painstaking but simple work:

  1. Come up with a pattern by drawing up a preliminary drawing.
  2. Arm yourself with suitable tools and cut the pattern on the surface of the wood.

Important! Each such gate is unique. If your own imagination is not enough or there is no desire to invent a pattern, take any of the ready-made projects that you like for execution.

contour

Contour carving is another type of exclusively handmade work. The technology for creating such a gate is as follows:

  1. Draw a drawing on a wooden canvas or apply it through carbon paper.
  2. Along the 2 lines of each element of the pattern, cut indentations with a chisel.

Important! For coloring, choose at least 2 colors - one for the ledges, the other for the recesses. This will make the drawing more voluminous.

Lace

This carving option is considered the most beautiful, but at the same time the simplest. With the right tool, it is easy to speed up the process by automating the cutting itself. For this:

  1. Apply any pattern of 1 or more solid pieces to the surface. The drawing may be the simplest.
  2. Drill a hole in any part of the canvas.
  3. Insert a jigsaw into it and sequentially cut out the entire pattern along the contour.

Important! To facilitate the difficult task of choosing the right design for yourself, you can only look at photos of wooden gates from various manufacturers and home craftsmen, or directly objects live, if you have such an opportunity. In the second case, you can clearly imagine the whole device of such a door structure, which means that creating your own will be much easier.

Installation of a wooden gate - the basics of construction

The entire installation procedure will consist of 5 stages:

  1. Creation of supports.
  2. Frame assembly.
  3. Fastening decorative material to the frame.
  4. Installation of all fixing and locking parts - hinges, bolts, locks.
  5. Finishing door leaf.

Important! Before you make a gate in a wooden fence, find out the direction of opening the door that is convenient for you. In this case, most often the width of the roadway becomes the determining criterion - if it is small, it is better to direct the sash inward, if it is sufficient so that the gate does not catch cars passing by - the choice is yours.

Installation of supports

Before starting work, treat all wooden materials - for supports, frame and cladding, with an antiseptic and wait for it to dry. This procedure will help prevent wood decay, increase its resistance to moisture and bugs.

  1. Drill 2 holes with a depth of 1-1.2 meters.
  2. At the bottom, arrange a sand cushion up to 7 cm thick.
  3. Fill in the same layer of rubble.
  4. Tamp both layers.
  5. Fill with cement mortar.
  6. Install support poles.
  7. Align their clearly vertical position by level or plumb.

Important! Fix so that during the setting of the cement mixture they do not tilt.

Frame assembly

As a result of the work on the manufacture of the frame, you should get a Z-shaped structure. For this:

  1. Lay the blocks on a hard, flat surface.
  2. Make a markup.
  3. Cut to desired length.
  4. Connect the frame elements.

Important! If there are “burrs” on any part, grind them with a planer.

Decorative cladding of a wooden gate

Sheathing of the frame is carried out in 2 ways:

  • solid side by side;
  • lattice with gaps.

In both cases, follow these rules:

  1. Make a preliminary marking of the position of the boards on the frame.
  2. Customize all sizes of boards for sheathing to the desired parameters.
  3. Fasten all the elements in sequence with nails or wood screws, checking in the process for evenness of their location vertically and horizontally.

Important! If the structure is lattice, then all boards should be located at the same distance from each other. None of the elements should roll.

Installation of locking elements

To hang a wicket:

  1. Make a preliminary fitting of its position.
  2. Mark the loops.
  3. Fix the loops in the marked places. Since the hinges are most often used decorative or forged, they are attached from the outside.
  4. Attach the door leaf.
  5. Adjust its position by level or plumb.

Important! Check that the sash opens easily and fits snugly when closed. After that, install the bolt and lock at a height of 0.9-1 meter from the ground.

Interesting wicket design ideas - video

Now you are convinced that it is not difficult to make a wooden gate with your own hands. Most likely, you will have to spend more time choosing an interesting design, because the first impression of your home will depend on it. But the result of such work will certainly become the subject of your pride!

Carved wooden gates are a necessary element of the fence of any cottage, country house or summer cottage. This is the first thing that catches your eye when visiting someone else's home, because the gate is the main entrance to the territory of private ownership. In addition to their main function - the protection of property, the gates carry an artistic decorative load. The overall design of the entire site largely depends on what material, how the gates are built and decorated.

Carved gates, as a rule, are a hinged type entrance structure. Before installing them, it is necessary to check that there is enough space for them to open and close. Today, elite gates made of wood are in great demand and popular; they can be seen in many cottage settlements. This architectural element does not lose its relevance and original novelty, due to the fact that each product is made by a master in a single copy. Gates serve as a business card that can tell a lot about the owners of the house.

In the Russian tradition of wood carving, carved gates and palisades are an integral part of the unique house carving. Slotted, relief, sculptural carvings with a combination of overhead elements and details were famous for the products of carvings made by masters of the Russian North. In the old days, the gate was a complex with a closed loop, in which the gate and the gate were a single entrance. In other cases, they were also made separate. Modern carvers have adopted the richest folk experience, enriching it with the latest working methods and the use of advanced technologies. They are able to perform work of any complexity - from fairly simple designs to the most complex sculptural and ornamental compositions. The style of the product can be anything: modern, oriental, classic or fabulously epic.

In the manufacture of carved wooden gates, wood species are used that are distinguished by durability, wear resistance, and strength. As a rule, this is an array of pine, spruce, sometimes cedar and aspen are used. The wood is dried in a special way so that the finished product does not crack and lose its appearance. Special impregnations protect the material from sudden changes in temperature and humidity, improve the properties of wood and act as a kind of barrier against various damages.

Carved gates made of solid wood, made by an experienced craftsman, will become a reliable, convenient and stylish protection for your home and yard. A carved ornament or a sculptural ensemble in the decoration of the gate will undoubtedly attract the attention of relatives and guests and bring aesthetic pleasure. After all, rich national traditions and novelties of the modern concept of woodcarving are combined in such a product.

How to make a carved wood fence with your own hands

The development of any suburban or urban area begins with the establishment of a fence. The fence not only provides some protection to the property of the owners, but also has an excellent decorative function.

The market offers a huge amount of materials used to create a fence, but despite this, wood, as a reliable and classic material, does not lose its position. Wood is available to everyone in the price category, it is extremely easy to process, especially when it comes to creating a fence. In terms of beauty, carved fences are in no way inferior to the popular forged counterparts that have come into fashion: they always look aesthetically pleasing and, with timely care, last just as long.

What is the advantage of such a fence?

Wood has become one of the most popular materials due to its many positive qualities:

  • it is absolutely eco-friendly material that does not harm the environment;
  • properly processed wood can serve for more than 50 years;
  • structures made of this material fit perfectly into almost any garden style design;
  • easily combined with all types of building materials;
  • caring for him does not require much effort and time;
  • installation of the fence due to the pliability of raw materials is carried out very quickly;
  • the material is cheap and available in many varieties;
  • repair of the finished structure can be carried out independently without much effort;
  • ease of installation allows you to do all the work yourself and save on the services of specialists;
  • wood is very easy to paint, which allows you to choose any color scheme.

In nature, there are a huge number of different types of wood with different colors and textures. Having decided on independent work, you can always choose the option that is most suitable for the overall exterior design.

Methods and types of thread

When it comes to doing wood carving on your own, it is better for beginners not to choose too complicated types, they need a long learning curve. Also, do not pay attention to methods that require special equipment in the form of machine tools and other equipment, since it is quite expensive. The simplest and most common for decorating a fence are the following types of carving.

Geometric

Such a carving implies quite painstaking, but not at all complicated manual work. With the help of special tools on the surface of the treated area is created drawing based on a large number of different graphic elements(point, line, rectangle, rhombus, spiral, drop, etc.). This type of art belongs to Russian folk art.

contour

The contour carving is also exclusively handmade, providing complete freedom of imagination. On a wooden plane is drawn or transferred with carbon paper image of any type, after which recesses are cut out with a chisel along the two lines of each detail of the pattern.

A carved fence decorated in this way will look more voluminous. Often, to enhance the effect of volume, the protrusions are painted in one color, and the recess in another, darker one.

Lace

Creating a lace ornament is considered the simplest, but at the same time, by its beauty, it always attracts admiring glances. This type of processing implies the possibility of automating the entire process. Drawn on the surface simple pattern of one or more solid elements. A hole is drilled on any part of the line, a jigsaw is inserted into it and the pattern is gradually cut out along its contour. Of course, you can use electric cutting tools.

Geometric and lace options are best for use on boards or picket fences, which are the future sheathing of the fence. But the creation of a contour type of carving is performed on separate planks, which are later attached to the finished fence, since during the installation of a picket fence with a three-dimensional composition, the pattern can be destroyed by jumpers, nails or self-tapping screws.

Tool and material preparation

Having chosen a contour or geometric thread, you should be aware of what is suitable for it. only hardwoods. Practically suitable for lace carving any wood, even hardwoods. The main thing is that the surface is smooth, without obvious flaws.

Before performing work, it is necessary to carefully prepare the surface for drawing. If the wood is light, its preparation is reduced to processing with a planer, if it is dark, tinting is carried out. To create a shiny surface, a black varnish is applied, which, after drying, is treated with polish.

If desired, you can use another method: wipe the planed surface with liquid wood glue or PVA, and then sand it using fine sandpaper. The procedure is repeated several times. Such a primer is sufficient for uniform application of black ink, and after it dries, varnish, which is also polished after drying.

It is much easier for beginners to work on a black shiny surface, since the results of labor are immediately noticeable on such a canvas, and the whole process of work becomes much clearer.

The composition of the ornament should be as clear as possible. The way it is translated depends on the color of the base. With a light color, choose purple or black carbon paper, with a dark shade - red, yellow or green. The drawing can also be applied by drawing it with a pencil or by transferring it over paper to the board, strongly tracing the drawing with a ballpoint pen.

For the preparation and processing of wood, it is necessary to take care of the availability of abrasive materials with the grain size that is most suitable for the selected wood species. If possible, buy an electric drill equipped with an emery disc, which will greatly speed up the whole process.

Carving can be done with a specially sharpened home knife, but when it comes to a fence, it’s still worth buying a few tools, since the convenience of the process with such a volume of work is very important.

Of course, the choice of tools depends on the complexity of the ornament and the type of carving. For a geometric, contour and lace look, it is enough to purchase:

  • cutter (used to carry out the main work - cutting contours);
  • straight chisels (level and clean flat surfaces);
  • round chisels (to create small rounded elements);
  • jigsaw (required when cutting lace carving elements).

Such a modest set is quite sufficient for the implementation of the studied methods. The size of all tools is selected depending on the size of the ornament.

wood carving process

The whole process consists of the following steps:

  1. wood preparation;
  2. creating a drawing;
  3. its transfer to the prepared workpiece;
  4. directly carving;
  5. final finishing of the finished composition.

While working, the master must always protect the left hand from accidental injury. For her, you need to find a place in which accidental contact with the skin during an incorrect movement or dismounting of the instrument will be impossible. Working while holding wood on your lap is strictly prohibited.

When the fence or board is prepared, they are fixed on the workbench with clamps or holders. When cutting a contour groove, the tool must be guided with two hands. The knife is clamped in a fist, the blade is guided with the second hand, its movement is controlled.

If the ornament or pattern has some circles, they are cut out with a semicircular chisel or a slanting knife. In general, the whole process is carried out with the help of tools convenient for the wizard. After readiness, it is necessary to remove the resulting dust from all cracks.

On the video - a training example of a contour thread:

But when it comes to lace carving, it is enough to purchase an even picket fence and start cutting. First you need to drill a hole on any part of the pattern, insert a jigsaw or drill and slowly cut the pattern along the contour. In order for the base not to crack during operation, the product must be kept on a hard, even surface. After cutting, the board must be sanded and varnished. This type of thread has a great advantage - finished holes do not have to be processed and brought to perfection.

Fence Installation

The installation of the fence is carried out in the following order:

  1. First of all, you need to determine the line along which the fence will be located. To do this, wooden pegs are placed around the perimeter of the site, and a thread is pulled between them. Points are marked along the thread at the same distance, which will serve as a place for installing poles.
  2. In place of these points, pits are dug 60-70 cm deep (with a support height of 1.5-2 m).
  3. All supports are treated with an antiseptic, after which the extreme pillars are inserted into the pits and filled with ready-mixed concrete. After the concrete hardens, threads are pulled between the corner posts from above, below and in the middle. Focusing on them, all other intermediate supports are inserted into the pits and also poured with concrete. It is advisable to wrap the lower part of the columns with roofing material, then water will not penetrate into the tree, which will significantly increase the life of the fence.
  4. After waiting for the solution to solidify, you can proceed with the installation of jumpers. An ordinary wooden beam usually acts as a lag. It is fixed with brackets, nails or self-tapping screws in a horizontal position between the supports. Jumpers not only fix the main composition and give it rigidity, but also serve as the basis for cladding the fence with carved elements.
  5. After the frame is ready, you can begin the installation of a carved picket fence or boards.

Fence painting and maintenance

Before painting, the fence must be treated with an antiseptic or fire-retardant agent. Such products will be an excellent protector of wood from the penetration of moisture into the fibers and protect it from the natural process of decay and mold. The applied antiseptic will also protect the material from damage caused by small pests.

After the liquid dries, you need to start the painting process. You can choose from two types of colors:

  • Covering paints cover the surface of the product with a thick continuous layer, give it the desired color, but completely hide the texture of the wood.
  • Glazing paints have a more liquid and transparent consistency, the texture is clearly visible through such a coating, and some samples of this building material even emphasize it.

An economical solution would be to use protective and decorative enamel. But it is worth remembering that this substance does not tolerate temperatures below -5 ° C and above + 50 ° C. Also, the design can be covered stain or modern impregnations, which will give the carved fence an even more thematic, folklore look. Deciding to cover the fence varnish or oil paint, you need to count on high consumption and purchase material with a margin, since the boards absorb liquid, which is applied in stages in several layers.

Even if the boards are covered with an antiseptic, after a long operation due to the influence of weather, temperature changes, they may lose their attractive appearance. For this reason, repainting should be done every 3-4 years. Simple care guarantees the safety of a unique fence created by one's own hands. Contrasting painting, adding other materials to the composition can enhance the effect of patterns, further decorating the fence.

Y. Podymakhin, Reutov, Moscow Region

Sooner or later, every developer faces the question of either building a fence with a gate, or reconstructing an old one. In this case, you can use the services of hired workers or do everything yourself. I prefer the second way.

Carried away by Russian wooden architecture, I wanted to put up a gate and a fence "antique". But almost a year passed from the idea to the decision to start work, because there was no time, and there was not enough visual material: to see the old fence in good condition is a rarity. Everything that came across was not always a good stylization. I had experience working with wood (namely, I decided to make a fence and gates from wood), so I set to work on my own.

I intended to make a gate from edged boards and a canopy over them. To do this, I attached three poles from a 100x100 mm beam to the existing iron poles with 10x120 mm bolts (photo 1).

Photo 1

Wooden poles, like all other parts of the gate, I treated with fire bioprotection in two layers, and the bottom of the poles with bituminous mastic. I did not dig in wooden poles, but simply put them on the ground (photo 2).

Photo 2

I attached a frame made of bars with a section of 50x50 mm to the top of the pillars for the device of a gable canopy (photo 3).

Photo 3

At this point, two clarifications need to be made.

Firstly, bars with a section of 50x50 mm are sold, as a rule, 3 m long. This means that the width of the gate cannot be more than this value. The matter is further aggravated by the fact that, for example, in a pack of 8 pieces that I bought, there was not a single bar longer than 2.99 m. Therefore, the triangular frame on the middle post had to be placed not along its axis, but with an offset towards the long span to be able to cover it.

If it were necessary to make a wider gate, one would have to take a bar with a section of 50x100 mm and a length of 6 m and saw it along, obtaining the desired bars of arbitrary length.

Secondly, when designing a frame for a canopy for a gate, I chose a metal tile as a roofing material, which I cut with a “grinder” into strips 70 cm long (this is the optimal cutting of a standard sheet with a minimum of waste). And this is not entirely desirable, since the coating is destroyed during cutting and the cut edge must be tinted, as it begins to rust intensively. In addition, no matter how hard I tried, I could not get a smooth edge when cutting.

To avoid these difficulties, already cut sheets can be ordered from metal tile sellers. But they cut in sizes that are multiples of 50 or 85 cm, which is due to the technology of the cutting process. And when designing the roof frame, this must be taken into account.

Lumber, at what time you don’t buy it, is always raw. Therefore, a fence or gate without slots can only be made if you use tongue-and-groove boards (which is expensive), or by stuffing slats or boards into the slots after shrinkage (and this increases the weight and cost of the gate). I used edged two-meter boards with a section of 25x150 mm for the gate. When buying in winter, the boards had a width of 150 to 155 mm, and after drying they became up to 145 and even up to 140 mm wide. And this means that on gates with a span width of 3 m, you can “lose” it during shrinkage up to 29 mm.

Considering the large weight of both raw and dried wood, it is necessary to make a strong frame frame with struts for the gates, which I made of wood (photo 4).

Photo 4

In order to create conditions for the natural drying of the boards and get a flat plane of the gate, without sawing, I attached the crossbeams with two bolts on both sides to the hinges, and then stuffed the boards on them. After about 2-3 weeks after drying under natural conditions, he removed the boards, installed the struts and attached the boards again, pulling them together as tightly as possible. After that, I screwed the crossbars to the hinges completely, after which I sawed them in the middle.

It is desirable to outweigh the boards in wet weather, when the boards are at their maximum size. If this is done in a dry, hot time without taking into account the possible expansion, then in the fall, during rain, the gate will “open”. And at best, they just bulge out.

The advantage of this approach is that the gate leaves are obtained with virtually no gaps. And the gate, in addition, after sawing the crossbars, practically does not require complex locks to align the alignment during operation.

This method also has disadvantages. So, while the boards are drying, you can’t use the gate, and if you have a car, you will have to leave it on the street. Plus, in fact, double work during the installation of the alignment boards.

The final stage of work is painting the gate.

Previously, I “aged” the boards, for which I processed each of them with a metal brush on a drill (photo 5). It is better to process raw boards - it turns out easier and faster. After that, the entire structure was covered with Pinotex.

Photo 5

I draw your attention to the fact that before the final installation of the boards, I painted all their end surfaces (photo 6), as well as the crossbars themselves from all sides.

Photo 6

If this is not done, then the tree in these places may rot (photo 7).

Photo 7

As a constipation, a deadbolt was installed on the upper crossbar. On the lower crossbars, I fixed the iron corners with a shelf outward with screws and put a piece of a 5x5 cm bar into the resulting niches. The result was a traditional modernized constipation. It not only locks the gate, but also keeps the leaves in the same plane. If the weight of the gate is large, then wheels can be attached from below. I put a padlock on the gate (photo 8).
