Carrots for feeding a baby from how many months. Is it possible to give raw carrots to children

Vitamin complexes presented on the pharmaceutical market, although they saturate us with useful substances, do not always do it safely.

We will talk about how to prepare and give carrot juice for babies, about its benefits, because the vegetable is a source of a large amount of vitamins and minerals. Agree that there is nothing more important than the naturalness of useful products, especially when it comes to the health of young children.

To begin with, let's take a closer look at this vegetable and see why it is so useful. It was not by chance that we mentioned a little higher such a concept as a vitamin complex, because carrots, in fact, are them. It is quite difficult to find another vegetable that would have such a rich set of vitamins and minerals. We will talk in more detail about its chemical composition below.

In fact, carrots and juice from it are used not only as food. Quite often, freshly squeezed juice or a specially prepared carrot concentrate is used externally. This is due to the fact that this vegetable has a healing property and perfectly heals small wounds.

People, for the most part, have extremely narrow ideas about the benefits of eating carrots. Usually this knowledge is reduced only to the possession of information about the beneficial effects on human vision.

In fact, this feature is one of many and is rather a pleasant side effect, which is achieved due to the impact on a large number of body systems. The range of useful properties is very extensive and is dictated by the rather unusual chemical composition of this vegetable, let's take a closer look at it.

Carrot juice for children: the benefits of the product

Before talking about how many months you can give carrot juice to children, you need to understand why this is needed. Indeed, as we know, a large number of products that were previously considered simply necessary and indispensable for the body of an infant, and sometimes an adult, are in fact absolutely useless.

Scientific research destroys a lot of traditional ideas about the benefits of various products every year. However, such discoveries have never refuted the information about the beneficial effects of carrots and its juice on the body, but rather confirmed it. The development of science makes it possible to more accurately determine which substances have a particular effect. Thanks to such a detailed study of the chemical composition, we can safely say that carrots are a storehouse of benefits.

Beneficial effects on the health of the body occur in several directions at once.

Provitamin A

Vitamin known as carotene, is one of the necessary elements in the process of formation and strengthening of both skin and mucous membranes.

  • Thanks to its content in the composition of carrots and juice, it contributes to the normal growth of the baby, as it increases the strength of the bones and activates their growth.
  • It also provides strong immunity and simply improves health.
  • For this reason, some moms use freshly squeezed carrot juice as nasal drops for their baby to help with a runny nose.
  • The effect on the skin has beneficial effects - the growth and quality of the hairline, as well as nails and the like, improves.

Vitamin B

In addition to vitamin A, carrots contain vitamin B, which is so necessary for our body.

  • Its normal content in the body contributes to the normalization of the nervous system, its strengthening, which is incredibly important, regardless of the age at which carrot juice is given to a child.

Therefore, if the baby is restless and nervous enough, the juice of this vegetable may well help in the fight against this problem.

Potassium and magnesium

Elements that are also found in large quantities in the composition of carrots are one of the most important elements that participate in the processes of blood circulation and contribute to the normalization of the cardiovascular system.

In young children, problems often arise in this regard due to the insufficient strength of the vessels, so carrots are also indispensable here.

Cellulose

A fairly large number of people know the laxative effect that carrot juice has. This is because this vegetable contains a huge amount of fiber, even when we are talking about juice.

This substance stimulates and normalizes the digestive processes. Therefore, carrot juice is often used in the fight against constipation in children, and is also a kind of prevention of this problem.

Antiseptic properties of carrots

  • Thanks to the antiseptic properties that we have already mentioned above, carrot juice has become indispensable in situations where a child has inflammatory processes in the oral cavity.
  • It is also used to treat children's thrush in the mouth.
  • In addition, quite often you can hear the recommendations of experts on external use for various diseases of the skin, such as dermatitis, and so on. Usually in such cases, carrot juice is used both externally and internally.

This is not a complete list of the useful properties of this product and its derivatives, but it is these properties that dictate the need to give carrot juice to children. From how many months this will happen is another question, but it should be remembered that systematic intake and compliance with dosages will make it possible to have a very qualitative effect on health.

It should be remembered that the vitamins of group A, which are so rich in carrots, are best absorbed with various fats, both animal and vegetable.

That is why grated carrots are often consumed with sour cream. In the case of juice, cream or yogurt is added to it. Of course, for very young children, this option is inappropriate, but for an older child, this will be a good combination.

In what matters it is better to be careful, as well as contraindications to taking carrot juice, we will talk in the next part of the article.

More on the topic of juices for a child, we recommend reading: “Pomegranate juice for kids” and “Apple juice for feeding” .

How to drink carrot juice correctly so as not to harm your health

Any product or liquid, even purified water, if the measure is not followed, can be harmful to health. Regardless of how many months the carrot juice is given to the baby, the permitted dosage must not be violated. Otherwise, you may encounter the appearance of a child's anxiety, which is caused by headaches and other unpleasant sensations that accompany an excess of juice taken.

For a long time it was believed that carrot juice, due to its antiseptic properties, is indicated for people with various ulcerative inflammations in the gastrointestinal tract, in fact, this is not the case.

  • This drink is contraindicated both for inflammation and for increased acidity of the stomach.
  • In addition, one of the main contraindications is the presence of diabetes.
  • Recent studies have found that this vegetable almost never causes allergic reactions in babies, regardless of the age at which carrot juice was given to children. However, if an allergy is still observed, then it is better to stop using it.

Just remember that yellowing of the skin is not a manifestation of any allergic reaction or deviation. The fact is that in the composition of carrots there is a coloring pigment that affects the color of our skin, at a high concentration it manifests itself in this way. If this happens, then you just need to take a short break in the intake, and then, when all the pigment is removed from the body, resume use.

When we talk about adults and how much carrot juice you can drink per day, the opinion of experts here is ambiguous. Someone sets strict limits, while others argue that you need to look only at the reaction of the body.

The second option is closer to the truth, since some people hardly drink even half a glass of juice, while others are their opposite.

How many months can you give carrot juice and how to do it right

First of all, it should be noted that the question of how much carrot juice can be given to a child is quite acceptable to answer - even before birth. Many doctors argue that it is important not only to introduce this product into complementary foods, but also to prepare the child for this.

Even during pregnancy, the expectant mother should add this drink to her diet..

How much carrot juice can you drink during this period? In fact, there are no strict restrictions here, but you should not exceed the volume of half a liter. This amount will be the most optimal.

In addition, the beneficial substances that make up the drink will help the woman herself to restore strength.

During feeding, it is also necessary to consume a similar amount of juice, thus creating a kind of base that will subsequently allow you to smoothly organize the introduction to complementary foods, regardless of how many months you decide to give carrot juice to the child. In addition, this drink will significantly improve the quality of breast milk.

Recently, pediatrics began to adhere to the opinion that the introduction of carrot juice should occur from about six months of age. This period is the most optimal for starting complementary foods with this drink.

If you followed the rules described above and added this vegetable drink to your diet during the entire pregnancy and the beginning of feeding, then it is allowed to give carrot juice to a one-month-old baby.

However, you must first consult with your pediatrician. Although earlier it was recommended to start feeding with juice from 1-2 months, now these numbers have changed markedly.

When can I give carrot juice to a baby who ate only milk for up to six months

Things are somewhat different in cases where a child up to six months of age was fed exclusively on mother's milk. The digestive system will not be ready to digest carrot juice if it is included in complementary foods.

For this reason, the introduction of vegetable juice into the diet is transferred to an age closer to a year.

After the age of three, the child can be given juice with pulp.

How much carrot juice to give a child

For the first time, they give only one teaspoon of carrot juice, diluted with water in equal proportions and cleaned of pulp.

Within six months, this volume is gradually increased to 100 milliliters, while the water is replaced with apple or other juice, giving the child a mixture.

It should be noted that the frequency of such complementary foods should not exceed three times a week. If the child noticeably resists the intake of juice and shows his displeasure, then it is better to replace carrot foods with something else.

How to make carrot juice for kids

So, now let's move on to how to make carrot juice for babies. You already know how many months to give this drink, but it is important not to make a mistake not only with the start date of complementary foods, but also with the quality of the product itself.

Juices from stores are not suitable, they lose almost all of their useful properties. Of course, the trace elements contained in carrots remain in them, but vitamins disappear, which is why it is recommended to make juice yourself, following the rules described below.

The most important thing in making juice for a child is the quality of the raw materials, that is, carrots.

  • It should not be underripe - with green spots on the surface and should not show signs of decay, they usually look like spots of dark shades.
  • In those cases, if the carrot is very large and its core is transparent, then only the side part is used, and the center of the carrot is thrown away.
  • The place where the leaves are located should also be removed, make sure that there are no green areas in those parts that you are going to turn into juice.

Using a blender, the pulp of carrots is turned into a mushy mass. Then it is necessary to squeeze out all the juice from it with the help of a fine sieve and gauze. It is also allowed to use special juicers, the quality of the product does not suffer from this.

Attention! Make sure that there is no pulp in the drink, as you remember, carrot juice is allowed to be given to infants only in this form.

Freshly squeezed juice is stored for only half an hour, after which the vitamins disappear from it, so you should immediately use it. Now quite often you can stumble upon information that carrot juice for babies can be frozen, and it will not lose its qualities - this is not so.

Freezing without loss of useful properties is possible only if it happens very quickly. Household refrigerators cannot cope with this, therefore, when freezing, the structure of the molecules is destroyed, and they lose all their usefulness. Therefore, drink juice either immediately, or make a small amount, which is enough for only one dose.

It is difficult to imagine a children's diet without carrots. But how and when to introduce this vegetable into the child's menu in order to get the maximum benefit and minimum harm?

Carrots for a child's body are a real find.

  1. First of all, it is a storehouse of beta-carotene, from which vitamin A is subsequently formed. Thanks to this vitamin, metabolism returns to normal, new cells grow, it takes part in the formation of the skeletal system and teeth and the development of the body as a whole, helps fight infections and reduces recovery period after illness. The beneficial effects of beta-carotene on visual acuity, skin and mucous membrane health are well known. Symptoms of vitamin A deficiency in 9-11 month old babies include dry skin, slow growth and frequent illness.
  2. An ally of carotene in the fight against colds in carrots is calcium. In addition to this element, this vegetable contains: potassium, sodium, phosphorus, as well as folic acid and other vitamins - B, C, E.
  3. Carrots contain a lot of pectin and fiber, which aid digestion. If the baby has a vegetable, the vegetable will have a mild laxative effect. It is desirable to give it to children who have bile stasis.

Although in some cases the introduction of such complementary foods can be harmful.

First of all, we are talking about the possible, which manifests itself quickly - literally after the first feeding. The fact is that the child's body can react to vitamin A contained in carrots with fever and skin rashes.

It is enough to remove carrots from the menu so that after a few days the baby's condition improves.

When and how to enter?

You can give carrot puree and juice starting from 5, and preferably from 6 months. For breastfed babies, this vegetable complementary food can be postponed to a later date - for 7-8 months. The same figures are relevant for infants with allergies or a genetic predisposition to it.

The increased sensitivity of some babies to this product raises doubts: is it worth making carrots the first vegetable food. German pediatricians are of the opinion that the real benefit is more important than potential allergies, which may not be.

Therefore, for manufacturers of baby food, it is often carrot complementary foods that open the product line, and without additives in the form of other vegetables. Over time, other foods recommended for babies are added.

This has its own logic, because the product is not only rich in valuable substances, but also tastes good compared to, for example, cauliflower.

Carrots are not only easy to digest, but also aid digestion. Nevertheless, Russian pediatricians still recommend not taking risks and introducing it into the diet of crumbs after or with zucchini.

Juice or puree is given for the first time in a teaspoon.

The reaction of the body is monitored after the introduction of any complementary foods, but in the case of carrots, parents should be especially observant: as already noted, the vegetable often causes allergies.

If everything is fine, after a couple of days you can give puree or juice again, a little more. Further, carrot complementary foods are given only a couple of times a week. Daily feeding can damage your baby's liver.

Secrets of selection and preparation

Bright and uniform coloring of root crops is a guarantee of freshness.

The choice of carrots for the preparation of baby food must be approached with special responsibility. Adhere to the following rules:

  1. Look for good, dense, naturally shaped specimens (no curves).
  2. The skin should be smooth and bright orange in color.
  3. Do you want to choose carrots that keep for a long time? Take a look at root vegetables with green leaves - they stay fresh longer. But when you get home, be sure to cut off the green part to avoid moisture loss.
  4. The blackened top indicates the staleness of the vegetable. It is better to refuse such a purchase.
  5. The most tender and sweetest is a medium-sized young carrot (weighing approximately 150 g), tapering at the end. Thicker specimens may be too hard - it will be more difficult for the hostess to handle them during cooking, besides, they contain more nitrates.

Like other root vegetables, carrots often contain traces of pesticides, which scares many parents. The solution is a bold peel (well, if you grab a small part of the pulp along with the skin). When cutting off the top, ruthlessly “grab” at least 1 cm.

The youngest are fed carrot puree, which is easy to prepare.

  1. The root crop must be thoroughly washed and cleaned.
  2. Before heat treatment, it is advisable to cut off the top and tail of vegetables.
  3. Cook until tender, then grind in a blender or rub through a sieve.
  4. For softness, the resulting mass is diluted with breast milk or a mixture.
  5. Since beta-carotene is a fat-soluble compound, just a couple of drops of vegetable oil should be added to the puree.
  6. If carrots are not the first vegetable food, other foods can be added to the dish.

Carrots are a wonderful and healthy vegetable that practically does not lose their nutritional value when cooked or steamed. On the contrary, under the influence of temperature, the rigid cell walls of the root crop are destroyed, releasing beta-carotene.

Don't want to make puree at home? You can always buy ready-made. Jars with complementary foods are good not only because the quality of their contents undergoes strict control and you don’t have to worry, for example, about the same nitrates.

For babies 3-5 months old, manufacturers offer a homogenized (homogeneous) product. It is impossible to achieve such an effect at home.

When buying carrot foods in the store, you should carefully study the label. The composition of the finished carrot puree should include: vegetables, water and nothing else. Various food additives can provoke an allergic reaction.

More diverse and gradually prepares a small body for the adoption of adult food. In this article you will find detailed information about the rules for the introduction of vegetable complementary foods, and specifically carrots.

When can I give my baby

According to the recommendations for the introduction of complementary foods from WHO, vegetable complementary foods are introduced in -. And from how many months it is possible to give carrot puree, there are no exact recommendations. They don’t start their first acquaintance with vegetables with carrots; most often, kids are given a taste of potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower and zucchini. Babies who are fed adapted can be given vegetables 1-2 months earlier.

Did you know? Carrot Week is celebrated in California every year. At this festival, various competitions are held for the best cooking of dishes from this vegetable, a carrot queen is chosen and carrot shooting is arranged.

How to start weaning

Acquaintance with new products is carried out in several stages - starting with 5-10 g (half a teaspoon) per day and increasing the volume. Pediatricians advise introducing a new product in the morning or in the morning, so you can fully track the possible occurrence of manifestations. Most often, 7-10 days are enough to completely introduce vegetable complementary foods into the baby's daily diet, thereby replacing one or a milk mixture.

Consider step by step how to introduce carrots into complementary foods:

  1. First day. For breakfast, you give the baby a vegetable to try - half a teaspoon. After that, carefully observe the behavior of the child, his stool and the condition of the skin. Since this amount of food is not enough for a growing body, you are supplementing or formula feeding.
  2. Second day. If the vegetable puree did not cause allergic reactions and stool disorders, then we continue to give while increasing the serving volume - 2 teaspoons. We continue to supplement or mix.
  3. The third day. We increase the portion to 3-4 teaspoons of vegetable puree (we will describe in detail how to prepare carrot puree for the first complementary foods later in the article).
  4. Fourth day. A serving of vegetables increases to 5 tablespoons, which is approximately equal to 25 g of vegetables.
  5. Fifth day. If, while treating the child with the first vegetable puree, you did not notice any negative reactions, then you can increase the serving to 50 g, i.e. 10 teaspoons.
  6. Sixth day. You can double the volume - a serving of vegetables will reach 100 g.
  7. Seventh day. Bring the volume of a portion of vegetable puree to 125-150 g. As soon as your baby has eaten such a portion of complementary foods, then it is no longer necessary to supplement him. Such an amount or mixture is eaten by a child in one.
Keeping a food diary can be very helpful. This is a detailed description of the products introduced, their volumes and observations of the well-being of the baby. It is especially important to write down such information if your baby is prone to allergic manifestations. Such a diary will help you track exactly which product caused an unwanted reaction.

Remember that all week, when you introduce a new product into your child's diet, you should carefully monitor changes in his health. If you notice the appearance of allergic rashes or worsening of the stool, then postpone the treat with this product for a month. Do not rush to immediately give mashed potatoes from several vegetables, make a choice in favor of one-component dishes.

Important! Meals for the little ones do not need salt and sugar. For adults, such food will seem insipid and tasteless, but for a baby, everything will be very tasty and unusual.

When to introduce carrots into the baby's diet?

Young mothers are interested in how and at what age it is worth introducing carrots into the baby's diet. You should not start the first complementary foods with orange and red vegetables, as they can cause an allergic reaction in the baby (more in the article:). At 6-8 months, the baby can try zucchini, cauliflower, potatoes (we recommend reading:). These vegetables are hypoallergenic, good in puree and any combination with each other. After the child gets used to their taste, it is worth starting the introduction of carrots.

You need to give your baby an orange vegetable when he is healthy and is not planned to be vaccinated in the near future. At 8-9 months, add a few drops of fresh carrot juice to a formula bottle, porridge, breast milk. If there is no negative reaction, you can slowly introduce the root crop into the daily menu.

How much juice does a baby need? First - half a teaspoon, then - a whole, by the age of one - up to 100 grams per 1 dose.

After a year, a child can be offered fresh grated carrots or a salad from it. At 2-3 years old, the child should be given halves of rings of thinly sliced carrots. They will help develop chewing skills, move on to solid foods. A whole root crop will be mastered by a baby in 3-4 years. It should not be given earlier, as the baby may choke. In the diet of a baby, carrot dishes can be present 2-3 times a week.

A child after a year will gladly eat a salad of grated carrots

Symptoms of a negative reaction to carrots

German pediatricians advise young mothers to start the first vegetable complementary foods with carrots. They believe that the benefits of the root vegetable are much greater than the risk of negative reactions. Before following this and other tips, parents should rule out the risk of hereditary food allergies and consult their doctor.

During the first complementary foods, it is important for the mother to carefully monitor the well-being of the little eater. A negative reaction to the root crop may be indicated by lethargy, drowsiness, nausea and vomiting after feeding. With frequent use of the vegetable, the skin and whites of the eyes may acquire a yellowish tint. In rare cases, there is urticaria and even swelling of the mucous membrane of the larynx. After the exclusion of the root crop from the diet, everything is normal.

How to give baby carrot juice?

Previously, pediatricians allowed the introduction of carrot and apple juices as early as 2 months. In recent years, priority has been given to breastfeeding and the introduction of juice into the diet has been pushed back to 4-5 months (for formula-fed babies). When the baby eats only breast milk, vegetable and fruit juices are allowed to be tried even later - at 8-9 months.

Vegetable juices are introduced into the child's diet later, when the body gets used to the puree.

Freshly squeezed juice allows you to adjust the stool, they lubricate the baby's mouth with thrush. A drink without pulp is offered to a child from a spoon or bottle, diluting it with water. For the first time, half a teaspoon is enough. By the age of one, you need to bring the volume to 100 ml, offering juice from a non-spill cup.

Complementary foods begin with a single-component juice. In the future, it is mixed with apple, pumpkin, orange juice to increase immunity. Children from a year old are allowed to try a freshly squeezed carrot drink with pulp. To assimilate vitamins, a small amount of fat (cream, sour cream, yogurt) is added to it.

It may contain pesticides, salts of heavy metals and other harmful substances.

Blanks for the future

During the period of infections, the mother does not want to once again run with the baby to the store for carrots or ready-made baby food. Homemade blanks that should be rolled up in early autumn will help out. With proper preparation, they will retain all the vitamins and trace elements useful to the baby.

To harvest carrot puree, you will need 1.5 kg of medium-sized root crops. They are thoroughly washed and cleaned, trying to cut off the top layer rich in trace elements to a minimum. Cut into cubes, pour water, bring to a boil. Add salt and cook for half an hour over low heat. While the carrots are being prepared, the jars are washed and sterilized, the lids are boiled.

Puree prepared for future use will allow you to give the baby vitamin complementary foods even in winter

Boiled root crops are slightly cooled and mashed through a sieve using a blender or food processor. The warm mass is placed in jars, closed with lids with a key. Turn over and wrap. Cooled jars are signed and stored in a dark, cool place.

Before offering mashed potatoes to the baby, the mother should warm it up to 36 degrees and be sure to try it, evaluate the taste. You need to store homemade preparations until the next carrot harvest (no more than a year). It is important to calculate how many jars you need to make.

How to choose ready-made puree for complementary foods?

An alternative to homemade vegetable puree are cute jars from the store. The choice is large and mom should pay attention to criteria such as the end date of use, the composition of the product and the condition of the lid on the package. If the expiration date is running out or the lid is swollen, the puree should not be purchased. The composition of the product for babies should not contain salt, sugar, chemical preservatives.

Purchased food should be stored in a dark, cool place or on the side shelves of the refrigerator. When opening the jar, a pop should be heard, which indicates a violation of the tightness. Opened product should be used within 24 hours.

Since the baby will not master the entire jar, adults will have to eat up. Before offering mashed potatoes to the baby, you should select the required amount in a plate and heat it in a water bath to 36 degrees.

Note to mom

The choice of the optimal variant of vegetable complementary foods depends on the age and characteristics of the baby's body. It should not be delayed if the baby has low hemoglobin, colic and constipation. Delicate purees and juices can be added over time, pumpkin and apple puree can be added. Gradually, the list of children's dishes based on the root crop will expand. A baby of one and a half years will like sweet cookies with carrots and oatmeal, fragrant casseroles.

Carrots retain their beneficial properties in any cooking method. It is important for mom to understand what the baby and his tummy like the most - this will help her regularly pamper the baby with light meals and drinks.
